3-0 out of 5 stars TV themes
Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deja Vu
Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories!I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

3-0 out of 5 stars Batman and Munsters
Despite what I've read in many of the other reviews, Batman and the Munsters ARE NOT the original versions that we heard on the intros to the shows themselves. To hear the original themes for those songs, go to the TV Land Theme song home page. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Goldsmith, The King Of Star Trek!
I have listened to several of the Star Trek Scores. My favorites are "First Contact" and "Insurrection." First Contact blends Insurrection style writing, with a little "Terminator." It is a classical, techno, cinema lovers dream score. The themes for the Vulcan first contact, Picard, and Lily are simply beautiful. While, the themes for the Borg queen and the drones are eerie, clangy, and downright perfect.
5-0 out of 5 stars Goldsmith's 2nd Greatest Trek Score
This score is right behind TMP (which wasn't a bad movie, really). One of the pluses is that the famous theme is only used twice on the album. In its place is a more traditional orchestral theme that has an epic quality to it, yet never feels pretentious.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top Star Trek score, A Great Goldsmith Score
Of Jerry Goldsmith's 5 Star Trek scores, First Contact is perhaps my favorite.Despite the fact that it is not very long, Goldsmith manages to convey the danger, heroism and wonder of space travel. The old Klingon theme is resurrected as a fanfare for Warf, the theme for the Borg is scary and genuinly frightening.Yet, it's Goldsmith's theme that is used for the First Contact that is the best.It is soft theme, with a quiet majesty. The score portion of the album is culminated by great rendition of Goldsmith's classic Star Trek theme. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first:this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
4-0 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc.And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walked down the isle to "Orchestral Suite from the Inner Light"
I bought this CD when I was engaged and in the process of planning the wedding. My wife and I were looking for a "walk down the isle" song that would be beutiful but not typical.
4-0 out of 5 stars Full of Surprisingly Beautiful Music
I've only recently started watching the "Star Trek" shows again. When I was growing up I only knew of a few of the movies with the original cast until TNG came out.I enjoyed the series a lot, and was hooked on the theme song from the word "go.""Deep Space Nine" was also enjoyable, but I never was very interested in "Voyager."To my surprise, the music featured here from "DSN" and "Voyager" is the best of this album.Don't get me wrong, I love cranking up the "TNG" theme song every now and then, but the rest of the songs that follow are so beautiful and fun to listen to that I almost wish I would have watched the later shows more often.4-0 out of 5 stars Great show -- amazing music
Whenever my friends look through my music collection and find this cd, the comment is always, "Ah, you Trekkie," accompanied by head shakes and eye rolls. They're incredulous when I tell them that I own the cd for the beautiful music, rather than for the show it's from.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweeping, romantic, bold ... far out (into space)!
Actually 5 stars, for this wonderfully operatic movie music that is - in turns - grand, touchingly intimate, eerie and hair-raisingly exciting, but always highly evocative. But 'only' 4 because there simply is a lot missing, which makes one wanting for more, namely: ALL of it! What we need is a fully remastered edition with much more (or even all) of the music, like the wonderful '20th aniversary collector's edition' of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great music, wish they still made it.....
Fantastic music!! I have never heard the likes! James Horner is truly among the greats, like Jerry Goldsmith, a legendary artist. This is a fantastic addition to anyone who loved the movie themes of Star Trek: Wrath of Khan... :)
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Star Trek Scores Ever Composed
James Horner really hit the bullseye with this one. It is atmospheric, heroic, horriffic, and fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply mesmerizing.
I can't think of any other movie that I've ever seen where the soundtrack did so much to make the movie special (except perhaps for "Forbidden Planet" with its brilliant electronic score).
5-0 out of 5 stars Three Words: I love it.
A movie's soundtrack can have a big impact on how good a movie is. Not only does the music itself have to be good, it also has to fit the movie. It wouldn't make much sense to have Fur Elise playing over a fight scene, or to play Wagner's Flight of the Valkyries at a Vulcan wedding.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pure inspiration!
This music for Star Trek: The Motion Picture to my mind completely fits the images on screen as envisioned by Robert Wise and all of the people who created the style, art and special effects of this movie. It all just fits the picture perfectly. There are, I think, mainly three kinds of music on this soundtrack.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, But It's Mssing Something...
I loved the movie Star Trek Nemesis and the music was great. I'm glad they have a CD of the music from the film. However, I am APPALLED that the song "Blue Skies" wasn't incorporated into the CD. How could they do that?! To me, the Deanna Troi/ Will Riker Wedding was made a little better by Data singing them "Blue Skies" for his wedding present. But, putting that aside, I would highly recommend this CD

Editorial Review

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything
Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.
2-0 out of 5 stars More of a propaganda CD
There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.4-0 out of 5 stars Great selection of Film Hits!
This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is.Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation.Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needed it, got it, used it
I am not and never have been a fan of Star Trek, but these effects are nevertheless etched into my memory and are amusing to hear and to use as an in-joke for the many others who instantly recognize them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent effects library
Just about every sound from the show you could want, although the tricorder sound effect and a high pitched sound when Sulu charged up the phasers are unfortunately missing-- though the latter can be heard in some of the bridge sequence mixes.I'm currently creating an animated Trek fan film, and this is an invaluable resource for putting it all together.Just got the CD from Amazon today, but originally had this on cassette many years ago. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Ulllllltimate Sci-Fi Music Collection
If one person gives great gifts, it's the illustrious Codemaster Talon. I've received a fair number of gifts in my lifetime, but so far, my older sister's take the cake. Take this one for instance. I'm real big on orchestral music, to the point where I listen to them more than any other kind of music. I've got orchestral versions of video game themes, orchestral soundtracks to truck-loads of anime shows (Big O, Escaflowne, and Giant Robo are incredible), and could probably spend the rest of my life just trying to study the nuances of all the classical music I've got. Being such a huge fan of orchestral music, I also have come to believe that orchestra music produced for movies and television is the new classical music (or as someone once said, Mozart would be making music for movies if he were alive today). Being a huge sci-fi fan, that kind of music has always been particularly near and dear to my heart. But were I to buy each and every soundtrack for every sci-fi I liked it would cost quite a bundle, and would include a lot of sub-par music along with the grandiose and fantastic main and memorable themes. That's where this beauty comes in.
5-0 out of 5 stars SciFi Album gift
I bought the Science Fiction Album as a gift for my son who is twenty-one years old.He is a musician, and also a huge fan of many SciFi shows and movies.I thought this would be the perfect thing for him and I was right. He loves it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Away From to be a Collectible Peace
If you like Sci-Fi movies and want a compilation of their important scores, this is the CD-set to buy. But let me warn you about that very few songs in the cds are from the original soundtracks. Most of them is re-recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. But the sound quality of cds are very good, because they have HDCD and Dolby Surround labels. This set is away from to be a collectible peace, but it is a good general compilation of favorite Sci-Fi movie scores. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Star Trek Generations
I Like it, The Overture Is Good. But, When You Watch The Movie5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack
Dennis McCarthy composed some great music for this great movie. It can't be compared to the earlier Star Trek movie soundtracks, because this movie is much different than the earlier ones. The music does indeed have a lot in common with the music of the series, which is exactly what makes this score so great, because you realize that this is still Star Trek. This score has everything you want, action, excitement(Kirk saves the Day, Outgunned, The Crash), also very touching, calm suites like "Nexus/Christmas Hug". Dennis McCarthy's music is maybe a bit harder to "understand" than that of Goldsmith and co. but the more you listen to it, the more you love it, and it is too bad that he didn't compose music for the later movies, he would have done at least as well as Goldsmith, especially on "Insurrection". All in all, this CD is simply great, not only if you are a star trek fan, I can recommend it to anyone. You really don't want to miss it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best soundtracks ever
this is james horner's best score ever. by far. this is also one of the best scores i have ever heard. the arrangments, timing, structure, and proggressions in this album are absolutely brilliant and sends chills down my spine everytime i listen to it. this score has spawned countless clones and imitations by the likes of composers such as basil poledouris (listen to basil's starship troopers score. nearly all of the cues and progressions from it are ripped straight from The Search For Spock score) among many other composers. if there is one star trek score to buy, this is it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Magic of Star Trek begins with James Horner
For me, this music is what probably started off my love for Star Trek and also (sci-fi/fantasy) motion picture music soundtracks. In its genre of motion picture music-soundtracks, this must be one of the most fantastically inspiring of all. It has a nobilic but heartfelt kind of romantic and mystic quality to it (mirroring the intense Spock-Kirk relationship) that I find very endearing. The soaring and melancholic string melodies - in 'Main Title', 'Returning to Vulcan' and the 'End Titles' really grip my attention, appealling to a simple kind but deeply seated need for pure and simple wonder, however uninspired the ideas behind the music sometimes may be. (The presto cascade of sixteenth notes on the violins at the start of 'Stealing the Enterprise' is of course an almost direct quotation from 'The Fight' (Act I, scene 6) from Prokofiev's music for 'Romeo & Juliet'.) It is interesting to know that the theme-music for Spock, which permeates this whole soundtrack, is also already present in the soundtrack for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, especially noticable in the cue 'Spock', where it speaks with restrained nobility, simply orchestrated with high-pitched electronic effects with accompaniment of wooden flute and harp strummings ...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cherished Memory
I remember when I first purchased this CD. Compact Discs were hard to find (at least the kind of music I liked). Everything was still on vinyl. This sounded so incredibly powerful over my LPs. "The Menagerie: Suite" composed by Alexander Courage with Erich Kunzel conducting still sounds very impressive. This Compact Disc really demonstrates the prominent characterists of Digital recordings. I still love my soundtracks on LPs but this CD has now become a nostalgic part of collection of film music.
5-0 out of 5 stars From a Galaxy Far Far Away to the year 2001
Time Warp brought together the best of the science fiction world. Everything on this cd is classic. The Alien closing title, "The Menagerie," and my favorite, "Also Sprach Zarathustra."5-0 out of 5 stars Classic sci-fi gets the symphonic treatment!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Star Trek
This compilation cd has chosen some of my most favorite cuts from the movies and tv shows. But because it is a compilation, it lacks the transition you would find in a sound track between cuts.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is The Ultimate
I've been a hardcore fan of Trek for a while, but sadly, this is the only album of Trek I have. This album is for you people that are in my shoes. If I never get another Trek album again, I'm very satisfied with this.
5-0 out of 5 stars nice compilation
I love the re-recordings of the star trek themes, Telarc released one of Erich Kunzel and the Cincinatti Pops in 1996, Varese Sarabande released this one in 2000 and Silva America released "The Star Trek Album" in 2003.They are all great, and they all rival the OST. And in some cases are superior. This album: all of hte jerry goldsmith tracks are available on Varese's Goldsmith "Frontiers" album. The 2 steiner tracks are on Star Trek Volume 2 from the 80s when they re-recorded TOS episode suites.Everything else is new.The tracks by the seattle symphony orchestra conducted by cliff eidelman (who composed star trek 6's score) are great.

2-0 out of 5 stars Star Trek Fix, But...
The music on this CD does not seem to be the same music I've heard in the movies. It's on the flat and tinny side and missing that big screen sound: crisp highs and stomach-rumbling lows. The quality is more like what you would hear on a mediocre AM radio station instead of a good FM station.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Music for Trekkers
This cd truly marks the best of Star Trek for it has selections from the all the great Star Trek scores (I thru V).Horner, Goldsmith and Rosenman all had great compositions and they are all represented here. One can argue that for the most part, the best pieces from each of those five movies are included. The only exception I think exists is with Star Trek III, where "Stealing the Enterprise" was for some reason left off. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Five Films
Of all the CD's I own, this is easily among my favorites. They got just about all the best themes from the first five Trek films on one album.Originally published as "Star Trek: The Astral Symphony", I first bought the cassette (under the original title) about four years ago and just recently upgraded to this CD.Read more

Star Trek: Insurrection is a great score overall. The flow to this CD is very enjoyable.Even though there was more music in the film that was not released on this album, you will enjoy Goldsmith's smooth transition between action cues and melodys.I love this score and I cannot put it away. This is some of Goldsmith's most fun work!I love all Star Trek scores, this one happens to be a favorite!

Jerry Goldsmith's fourth round scoreing music for the Star Trek movies was this one, where just as the movie was rushed through production, so was the music. It sounds uneven and you can even hear where the themes end just when they seem to be gearing up for a new theme to take over. Not Jerry's best, then again, it was not Star Trek's finest time either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goldsmith is the Star Trek king
After a successful score to Star Trek: First Contact, Jerry Goldsmith returns once again scoring his fourth Star Trek film, Star Trek: Insurrection, which is just as good as First Contact. "Ba'ku Village" opens with Alexander Courage's classic Star Trek fanfare, which segues into Goldsmith's new theme for the film which is a soft melody for strings, harps, and flutes. This theme occurs again in full form in "Children's Story", "The Healing Process", "New Sight", and the grand finale "End Credits". Goldsmith's action music, which is some of the best action music present in film scoring today is also featured. "Not Functioning" is a rip roaring action cue which features punctuating blasts of brass, dynamic strings, and electronic effects that has become a Goldsmith standard in Star Trek. Other great action cues are found in "The Drones Attack", "Riker Maneuver", and "No Threat" which move the score along in a driving fashion. As usual, Goldsmith puts all of the melodies together in "End Credits" to leave you with a positive feeling. A great score overall and one that is worthy of many more sequels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outdated now, but still a good CD to have.
This is a great CD, even if it is outdated (no theme from First Contact, Insurrection or Nemesis.)But this CD is great. The sound effects are annoying, that much we can all agree on, but for those bashing the concert arrangement of the Original Series theme...this is the arrangement by Alexander Courage himself arranged for concert, its performed the same way by John Williams and the Boston Pops on the CD "Out of This World" among other Williams/BPO compilations.I would rank this CD below Silva's "The Star Trek Album" and Varese's "The Ultimate Star Trek", but above Naxos "Star Trek" album.Though, a Star Trek fan should have all of them!and even if your not a star trek fan, this is a good sampler at a cheap price.People selling this for under $5 with shipping!Thats a bargain.Standouts for me are Star Trek II and Generations. The Generations Overture (End Credits) sounds so much better with a larger symphony like the Cincinatti Pops than the orchestra Dennis McCarthy used for the movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not a soundtrack -- but a fine symphony performance
Some reviewers have complained that this CD does not exactly follow the original soundtracks.Well, it's not a soundtrack, it's a symphony performance. If you want a soundtrack, then buy a soundtrack. But, like any "performance of" movie music, This CD is not going to sound exactly like the original. In some places, it sounds even better, especially for the TOS selections, because at the time the TOS music was produced, the recording techniques were not as sophisticated as today. As for the sound effects, they are not intended to be authentic Trek sounds. They're creative uses of orchestral instruments.(I still find myself wondering how they did some of them...)In short, I like this CD for what it is -- a pop performance of some of my favorite music. My only complaint it that it ends with "You will be assimilated."Into what?Trekdom?I would have preferred it to end with Leonard Nimoy saying, "Live long and prosper" -- as the perfect closing "bookend" to his fine narration at the beginning.

1-0 out of 5 stars An embarassment compared with original Star Trek music.
Erich Kunzel proves he can't even perform the original musicwithout re-arranging the scores and inserting his own instruments and 'special' sound effects into the music to replace those that couldn't be duplicated. Much of the music on this CD has been altered to the point that it is painful to hear, leaving the listener wondering why they inserted sound effects into an otherwise decent orchestration. I'm not talking about the sound effects between each piece, but during some of the music itself.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I must disagree
I own all the original recordings, and I still enjoy this re-recording.It is good.It is better than the Cincinatti Pops "Symphonic Star Trek", it is better than the Richard Hayman "Star Trek" compilation from 89, its better than the Sci Fi compilation on the Edel label from 93 and for the most part is better than Varese's Ultimate Star Trek from 1998.
3-0 out of 5 stars Middle-Trek
I rate this album as fair-to-middlin' for Trek score tributes.
5-0 out of 5 stars This one's a plus
Usually I find different arrangements of originals disheartening. ie anybody messin' around with Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn. But I found many of the tracks refreshingly bright. (must be a producer or engineering thing) and the extended versions of the various series and motion picture cues were enjoyable. Star Fleet Academy is one of my favorites from this cd. Generally once you hear Jerry Goldsmith's Title Theme, however you've heard it all. That did get a little old. And it is too bad that the producers of this cd did not have access to Craig Huxley's "Blaster Beam" (highly polished artillery shell casings with motorized magnets on the 15 foot-long instrument) for disc one track 3 of theST:TMP "Klingon Attack" And the insertion of a female vocalist in disc two track 8 "The Menagerie" ST:TOS pilot one was premature. The theme was straight instrumental for the pilot and the first season. A vocalist was not inserted til season two. I've always enjoyed soundtrack recordings especially the big orchestral thematic settings. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Take this one for a drive
While I can understand why people did not much care for the movie, I have to confess that I liked it myself -in no small part because of the musical score. It is a real pleasure to finally have a copy of this soundtrack. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Score For The Least Watchable "Trek"
Once again, Jerry Goldsmith has created a music score that goes beyond the film it was written for.I would feel bad if I said "Star Trek V-The Final Frontier" was a bad movie; in fact, I consider it one of my guilty pleasures, and one of the reasons for that is Goldsmith's music.4-0 out of 5 stars Purchase for "The Mountain"
After finally allowing myself to watch Star Trek V, I found myself watching the film again and again to listen to the great musical hook played throughout the movie, most notably in "The Mountain". The rest of the soundtrack, while not groundbreaking, serves to spice up the old tunes used before. It features a distinctive sound that differs from the rest of the series of films. ... Read more
