5-0 out of 5 stars Best Show on Broadway
I saw this musical last year, and thought it was amazing!!! The music is unbelivable!!!! Idina Menzel and kristin Chenoweth are wonderful, two of the best voices I've ever heard. If you like musicals, then you HAVE to get this CD.I've almost worn it out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Necessarily Wicked!
I was excited about getting this compact disc about Wicked, the hottest ticket on Broadway. I liked the beginning about how the witch was born green. I think the compact disc does serve a service in providing us a closer view of the musical itself. I didn't care for the story involving Glinda, the good witch, and Elfaba, the bad witch who is green. I didn't like the story itself. While I am sure that the musical is much better than just listening to it but I was uncomfortable with Elfaba's portrayal as being born green and bad while Glinda was both popular and pretty. I think I was just more sympathetic towards Elfaba because she was the outcast and I always find myself among the outcasts so I felt sorry for Elfaba. I don't find much sympathy for Glinda who has spent her entire life being both popular and gifted so of course, she doesn't change. She gets rewarded while poor Elfaba gets treated as bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Musical EVER.
I'm the kind of person that listens to showtunes all of the time. Seriously. Wicked is what made me that kind of person. The first time I had ever heard it was my first year doing choir, and ever since then, I've loved it. It's got amazing songs and two of the best musical theatre actressess to ever be on stage, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. So if you love musicals, this is the CD to buy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Match!
In short, this is my new favorite CD to listen to while painting, driving, writing and working on any thing at all. I am writing my next novel as I listen to this work. The music puts me in a good mood to be sure. I oft cannot help but recall scenes from the movie while I listen to this soundtrack and so I can relive the movie even when I am too busy to get a warm cup of something wonderful and put my feet up to watch it for a couple of hours. I adored the movie, even though it differed from my expectations: better in some ways, a little lacking in others (though it gets better and better with every viewing) and it has not replaced but only added to my other 5 hour BBC P&P movie miniseries. More Jane Austen is always good. The only thing lacking in this soundtrack are one or two missing songs that I loved from the movie. But then again, and after all, I cannot truly complain, for there is so much ear candy in this modern work of classic genius. This is truly a must have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love the soundtrack, disliked the movie
I very much enjoy the music to this movie. My favorite track is "The Secret Life of Daydreams." This music is peaceful and resting. I did not like the movie except for the gorgeous scenery and a very few moments of good acting. However, knowing the orignial story I can imagine it to the music or even just enjoy it for what it is, great music. I highly recommend this cd. My personal recommendation is that if you have the software to take out the beautiful scenery in the movie, then make your own movie set to the soundtrack backround. This way you can enjoy only what you want of the movie, accompanied by this wonderful music.

5-0 out of 5 stars How could this not be good?
First of all, the cast was great! For those of you that are die-hard original cast fans, you still have to admit that Hollywood did a good job on this one.The music, of course, is incredible. The added song, sung by Minnie Driver, although really not of the same caliber as the other songs, is a great addition to the CD.As you're listening to the songs, you know exactly where you are in the movie, they've set it up really well.As per the usual, Amazon provided speedy, quality service and I received the CD right away.Anyone who liked the movie and found themselves singing along will find this CD to be a must-have for their personal collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Broadway, But Still Worth Watching
If you have never seen any version (Broadway, book, or movie) of The Phantom of the Opera, this is a worthwhile movie to watch. However, if you have seen the Broadway show or read the book of The Phantom of the Opera, then you will probably be a little bit disappointed, but it is still worth watching.
5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Music
I felt Gerard Butler was the perfect Phantom despite what some other reviewers have stated...he is dark, sexy, passionate with his emotions - his voice is incredible and fits the character perfectly.

1-0 out of 5 stars More Missing Songs
In addition to the missing songs noted by other reviewers below, how do you run commercials featuring "Somewhere Only We Know" by Keane and yet not include the song in the movie and soundtrack? That song really gives the commercial a good feel and tells a great story itself that could easily be related to the story the movie is conveying.

Editorial Review

This remake of the 1996 Japanese film that set unlikely box office records in its native country turns more on a sexy, cinematic dance revivalism than the charms of stars Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. While its soundtrack never veers far from that noble task, it gratifyingly jolts its familiar rumbas and tango rhythms with a few modern musical kicks all its own. Pussycat Dolls' crisp, sensuous take of the standard "Sway" may subtly juice tradition, but Gotan Project's "Santa Maria" gives those familiar Latin rhythms a downright savory electronica makeover. Producer/arranger John Altman underscores tradition via his versions of chestnuts both lively ("Happy Feet") and ethno-apropos ("Espana Cani," "Perfidia," "Andalucia") and even a suitably schmaltzy cover of Mancini's signature "Moon River." Altman's sturdy musical background helps focus songs as diverse as Peter Gabriel's bittersweet "The Book of Love" and Gizelle O'Cole/Pilar Montenegro's vibrant, modern Latin-inflected title song, Jamie Cullum's club-beat-meets-lounge take on "I Could Have Danced All Night" and Miya's slinky, hip-hop seasoned remake of Bowie's "Let's Dance."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Romance is still alive in Shall We Dance CD and DVD
I watch this movie over and over. The story is wonderful, the acting is great--who can resist Richard Gere's tiny smile towards his wife, Susan Sarandon. And this was my first intro to Jennifer Lopez who was excellent and a wonderful dancer. The music?? Well, I had to have the music; it is varied and it is romantic and uplifting and introduced me to Peter Gabriel and other music. You won't be sorry to buy this music--it makes you want to get up and dance slow and fast!!And if you are a little bit of an oldster, like me, it will bring back youthful and memorable feelings of romance and real love!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exercise care if playing this CD while driving in your car!!
This CD rocks! If you liked the movie and the music, this is the CD for you.Latin music, Richard Gere in a tux, what's not to like? The caution about playing it in your car is because the first time I listened to it was in the car and it's really hard to dance and drive at the same time (although I tried!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Shall We Dance?

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I loved it! It has all of my favorite music from all of my favorite Disney movies: The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King! Although I have to say I didn't recognize some of the older songs and don't really jump for joy when some of the Mary Poppins songs play, I still really love this classic Cd set!

This is a production rife with odd pairings: English actor Daniel Day-Lewis joining up with the Mohawks; James Fenimore Cooper adapted by Michael Mann; disparate composers Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman teaming up. This last pairing seems a suspicious attempt to endow the score of this modern film adaptation of a junior high school literary evergreen with both a golden age of Hollywood dramatic bent (Jones) and a '90s-slick guitar-muzak veneer (Edelman). A strange amalgam that doesn't quite work. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICENT
Jerry McCulley's Amazon.com review is surely a joke. This movie and this soundtrack are the most stirring to come down the pike in a very long time. "Promentory" is, to me, the most moving of all the tracks--dark, poignant, and uplifting all at the same time--and can stand on its own as a magnificent work. But, of course, the whole CD is well worth having. Several years after its release I'm still enjoying the grandeur of it all.

For his second Broadway musical (and first time out writing a full show directly for the stage), Elton John certainly set his sights high by turning to one of the grandest of all operas as a source. 4-0 out of 5 stars One of Disneys Best!
So Disney has a tendency to take basic ideas and make them astheticly wonderful, but the real musical theater aspect is lost. Luckily, Aida does not fall in that category. The only main artistic license that Disney took with "Aida" was making her form Nubia (shes from a different country in the opera) so they could play the whole race card. That aside, I love this musical. The Music is great, the lyrics are great, I listened to it non stop when I first got it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. My favorite songs would be "The Gods Love Nubia" and "Written in The Stars."

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad... Not good...
One major reason to buy this CD is the EXCELLENT cast, Sherie Renee Scott, Heather Headly, Adam Pascal, but the score is lacking. There are a few good songs that make it into my favorites but the rest seem to be just fillers, I would buy the four good songs off of iTunes and leave the rest to be undiscovered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Aida is definitely worth buying
I became a "Renthead" as soon as I heard the music, and immediately fell in love with the voices of Adam Pascal and Idina Menzel. I heard about "Aida", and how Adam was in it, and how Idina had done it at one point, too, so I figured, "Why not?" So I tried it. And I'm really glad I did. Not only is Adam's rocker voice amazing, Elton John and Tim Rice really outdid themselves. "Aida" is a lot like "The Lion King", which was also really successful. At first I thought that I would be really biased against Sherie Rene Scott because she plays the part that Idina had. I was afraid I would totally blow off her voice, going, "It's not Idina. Whatever." But although she is not Idina, she is really good in her own way, and I think her voice is very beautiful and has a very strong tone. Then, I had heard so much about the "phenomenal" Heather Headley, but I have to say, I was somewhat non-impressed. I was waiting for this voice to totally blow me away, but I found her voice kind-of sharp and rough at times, not like the PLEASINGLY jagged voice of Adam, or the smooth liquidity of Sherie Rene. But even though I didn't think she had the best performance by far, this is still a very good buy. If you like uplifting Pop/Rock music, and beautiful love ballads, you will love "Aida". ... At long last, Lindsay Lohan and Meryl Streep sing on the same CD. Okay, so they don't actually duet, but both do perform on the soundtrack to Robert Altman's take on Garrison Keillor's popular radio show. 4-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable but somewhat disappointing
after perceiving the film to be a historical piece of movie theater;the sound track seemed a bit dis-jointed in transitioning from song to song. some additonal narration could have helped the flow of music . .
2-0 out of 5 stars Buy the CD, skip the DVD
If you love "A Prairie Home Companion," it is fun to watch top stars perform with Garrison, and I admired how subtly he wove Lake Wobegon stories into the dialogue. However, if you expect movies to have plots, this flick isn't for you. No discernable rising action or climax, and the resolution was limp, as if Garrison ran out of ideas to tie up the direction he took the material. I wish GK had instead presented his annual joke show. Don't let the movie fool you if you've never heard "A Prairie Home Companion." It is a 100% entertaining radio show. The songs in the movie are well-performed and I was impressed with the peformances. Woody Harrelson, Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin can sing!

This CD has some great recordings and will never grow old or outdated with time.I bought it for Elvis Costello's rendition of "She," but I love the whole CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Notting Hill" soundtrack
This soundtrack is great. I especially like the rendition of "She" by Elvis Costello. This is very much a great romantic and slow dance soundtrack.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very nice Soundtrack for a good film
My wife and I saw the movie in the theatre and purchased the movie on DVD and the soundtrack. We enjoy many of the songs on this CD.My favorite is "Say Nothing at All" by Ronan Keating, (one of the Boyzone members).Boyzone's "No Matter What" written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Shania Twain's "You've Got a Way" are used in the closing credits of the film and two great songs.Bill Wither's great song "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" is perfect for one scene in the movie. The bonus tracks were added as fill since they weren't used in the film.Techno version of "Ain't No Sunshine" is okay.Costello's "She" isn't a favorite of mine.I believe his voice isn't right for this song.Trevor Jones original musical score I believe is especially nice.Al Green's "How to Mend a Broken Heart" is used well in the film, but does not appeal to my tastes.Hope you enjoy the CD and have seen the film. ... Editorial Review

Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score captures the conflict between 18th-century Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffé's film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash. His trademark lyricism also comes through, notably in the beautiful themes for "Gabriel's Oboe" and "The Mission." Not as over-the-top as his well-known spaghetti Western scores, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethereal
This is Morricone at the height of his career. Here he created a score as mysterious and ethereal as the jungles and waterfalls depicted in the film "The Mission." Using a combination of flutes, oboes, strings, choral and other odd wind instruments, Morricone created both a unique and haunting experience that will leave you spellbound long after the last notes have faded from the air. The score could almost be classifed as a requiem, in this case a tribute to a people that are gone (the Guarani natives depicted in this film who were long ago driven from their homes) and the Jesuits who gave their lives to protect them. From the opening scene of the film, the score announces itself as the dominant character in the narrative, taking us from the lonely plight of a missionary on a cross, to the streets of colonial Asuncion, to the mist shrouded rain forest above the falls and the fateful mission where lives and beliefs will be tested to the core, combining native motifs with deep and sweeping string movements to fill in the places in the story where actors and the dialogue are silent, allowing the music to bring us down into an intimate place of reflection where we can embrace the sadness and the transformation that this film evokes. The only piece that I can compare this work to is Richard Strauss' "Death and Transfiguration," both works leave me shaken and nearly moved to tears. However, it's a deeply rewarding feeling to come in contact with works as profound as these. Buy "The Mission" and you will find yourself instantly transported to a place as rare as the bygone world the film depcits.
3-0 out of 5 stars Marvellous, but sill flawed
The CD is another example of what popular music is, its truly great failure. Lack of development. Repeating itself. The superficial variety of the music is quite great: here there is a quite wellcome assemby of different musical idioms: the peaceful way (à la New Age) of "Falls" and "The Mission", the neobaroque of "Gabriel's oboe" (resembles the lyricism of the famous slow melody of the Marcello's oboe concerto, which was played in the preliminary version of the film which was presented to Morricone to induce him to write the score), the impulsive, vital and protean force of "primitive" people ("the river") and the idiom of the XX century music ("Refusal", "Alone"; some passages I find quite similar to Bartok's style). This last aspects may be less appealing to some people but I find them spiring and paradoxically the least flawed. And some tracks combine them eg the 1st juxtaposes the "gabriel" with the "river" themes. Other music present is choral sound, choral themes, very beautifull, sung by a choir which does not sound so polite (as villages must have sung that at that time).

Editorial Review

Most modern Hollywood films have musical "temp tracks" laid in as they're edited, usually classical standards or music from other soundtracks that helps shape the dramatic and emotional intentions of works in progress. Sometimes these temp tracks become the score (as in "2001"), but more often they serve as a template for the film's eventual scorer. That said, we'll boldly climb out on a limb and opine that director Ridley Scott was listening to a whole lot of Holst's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Zimmer's best
Hans Zimmer has written a lot of music, but this score rises above the rest for me.Some have complained (and Zimmer has even been sued over it) that this score is too close to some of Holst's "The Planets", and Mars: Bringer of War certainly influenced parts of this score. That said, the action music from this score is blood-pumping, and interspersed throughout are gloriously beautiful melodies that inspire the soul and enlighten the mind. The last 3 tracks are particularly beautiful."The Battle" is the track that recalls "Mars" (I believe) and is some great action music finished off by the most thematically beautiful music I've heard from Zimmer. This one is a classic and deserves a place of prominence in even the most basic of film score collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars And I thought The Last Samurai was awesome

Editorial Review

Don't be fooled by the "various artists" credited as performing on this soundtrack: the CD actually has a rather uniform tone, and mercifully it's a lovely one. Composer Mychael Danna is paired with the Denver band DeVotchKa, who perform his score and offer a few tunes of their own. Making excellent use of strings, tuba, and squeezebox, they set a mood that echoes the movie's warmly idiosyncratic one. On top of that, it's hard not to like DeVotchKa's singer Nick Urata, whose high-lonesome croon falls somewhere between Roy Orbison and the Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt. Sensitive indie troubadour Sufjan Stevens contributes two wonderful songs that display his usual flair for clever arrangements, especially "No Man's Land." Wait, did I say "uniform tone"? A pair of uptempo dance numbers interrupt the flow toward the end: Tony Tisdale's "Catwalkin'" and a remix of Rick James's classic "Superfreak"--the effect of that song suddenly barging in is akin to hearing Jamiroquai's "Canned Heat" in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant composition
The music score for Little Miss Sunshine is a major contributor to the appeal of this amazing indie film. If you enjoyed the movie, you are bound to enjoy the soundtrack.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful melodies!
The soundtrack fits perfectly with the movie for every step of the way!A must-buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars beautifully melancholy
Fits the tone of the movie perfectly, as good soundtracks do. The instrumental pieces can really put you in a trance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece
There are only three pieces of music created specifically for a soundtrack thatI can say I truly adore. The akira Soundtrack (not for all taste but I feel it fits some moods well), Conan the Barbarian (simply an amazing, inspirational CD that is timeless), and Braveheart.
5-0 out of 5 stars Grand, epic, moving score
James Horner has never written a more epic score than this--it eclipses even the gorgeous music he wrote for Legends of the Fall a few years earlier. This score boasts breathtakingly beautiful music at times, and powerful and inspiring music at others. There are a few tracks that evoke the tension of battle that, while not always pleasant on the ears, do a great job expressing the mood.Horner wrote multiple themes for this one, each of which is wonderful. He wrote two themes that can be heard simultaneously for one of the greatest musical moments in cinematic history (see track 17) but that stand alone well during the rest of the album."For Love of a Princess" is probably one of my top ten favorite tracks of music ever. This album is an absolute staple of any good soundtrack collection, and would make an excellent place to start one if you haven't yet.Fantastic stuff that only gets better with repeated listens.

5-0 out of 5 stars View from a trumpet player...
I got a good laugh at the reviewer who advised listeners looking for "feel good triumphant trumpet" too buy Aaron Copland's music. That's rich! And it is actually very good advice. In Aaron Copland's universe the piece "Quiet City" is not too far from the new Battlestar's mood.
5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
great soundtrack, very original pacing, style, really adds to the sombering darkness of the series and great to listen to as you work on something... dark and somber

4-0 out of 5 stars Haunting Score
Bear McCready (composer of the regular series' music) took many of Gibb's leifmotifs from this score, and for good reason. The Miniseries score begins eerily with the "Cylon" chiming, then progresses into a Galactica main theme (which is unfortunately not used at all in the regular series). The main theme is most dramatic in the the track, "The Storm and the Dead," complete with vocals. It's not your everyday "space opera" Wagnerian music; people who like that stuff should look elsewhere. ... Read more
