5-0 out of 5 stars Superior to the Original
I'm not just a casual fan of Rent -- I've seen the Broadway show, I've heard the original cast recording, and I know a bit about each of the original cast members. But I must part ways with most of the fans of the stage show by saying that yes, the movie's cast recording is indeed superior.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
I love my OBC recording. But the production on it is less than stellar and it can sound almost "tinny" at times. So when I listened to this version, I was scared that it would not live up to the standards set by the cast album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Loving Rent the soundtrack
Hello, My name is Michael, Im 15 years old. I love the rent soundtrack, I mainly like it becuase it has EVERY SINGLE SONG recorded for the rent movie instead of the highlited one, (I suggest you listen to Another Day and Goodbye Love if you purchace this) I've played it over a billion times by now (no joke) and it still is just plain lovely. Its a must have for all rentheads, or someone who just liked the movie. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This remake of the 1996 Japanese film that set unlikely box office records in its native country turns more on a sexy, cinematic dance revivalism than the charms of stars Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. While its soundtrack never veers far from that noble task, it gratifyingly jolts its familiar rumbas and tango rhythms with a few modern musical kicks all its own. Pussycat Dolls' crisp, sensuous take of the standard "Sway" may subtly juice tradition, but Gotan Project's "Santa Maria" gives those familiar Latin rhythms a downright savory electronica makeover. Producer/arranger John Altman underscores tradition via his versions of chestnuts both lively ("Happy Feet") and ethno-apropos ("Espana Cani," "Perfidia," "Andalucia") and even a suitably schmaltzy cover of Mancini's signature "Moon River." Altman's sturdy musical background helps focus songs as diverse as Peter Gabriel's bittersweet "The Book of Love" and Gizelle O'Cole/Pilar Montenegro's vibrant, modern Latin-inflected title song, Jamie Cullum's club-beat-meets-lounge take on "I Could Have Danced All Night" and Miya's slinky, hip-hop seasoned remake of Bowie's "Let's Dance."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Romance is still alive in Shall We Dance CD and DVD
I watch this movie over and over. The story is wonderful, the acting is great--who can resist Richard Gere's tiny smile towards his wife, Susan Sarandon. And this was my first intro to Jennifer Lopez who was excellent and a wonderful dancer. The music?? Well, I had to have the music; it is varied and it is romantic and uplifting and introduced me to Peter Gabriel and other music. You won't be sorry to buy this music--it makes you want to get up and dance slow and fast!!And if you are a little bit of an oldster, like me, it will bring back youthful and memorable feelings of romance and real love!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exercise care if playing this CD while driving in your car!!
This CD rocks! If you liked the movie and the music, this is the CD for you.Latin music, Richard Gere in a tux, what's not to like? The caution about playing it in your car is because the first time I listened to it was in the car and it's really hard to dance and drive at the same time (although I tried!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Shall We Dance?
I thoroughly enjoy this CD.The music is up tempo and great to dance to.One afternoon, I danced through the whole CD.I bought this Shall We Dance primarily for the Santa Maria song, but found all the songs to be wonderful.I highly recommend this CD to anyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Monkey song dull? Maybe cuz you haven't seen the show?
The first time I saw this show, the surprise after surprise really impressed me. When Aldolfo appeared in the Nightingale song, I asked my friend, "What's going on here, this scene does not make sense." The surprise a minute after I asked that, made me laugh and laugh and laugh.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another 'On the Nose' show that oddly delivers
It's both perplexing and oddly reassuring to me that in today's cynical landscape musicals that are not cynical at all could be direct hits on broadway.Between The Producers and Spamalot there's been a kind of resurgence in old school humorists with a contemporary self-awareness which somehow doesn't take away from the earnesty and humor... Add Drowsy Chaperone to this list.I'll throw in my two cents- Foster is, as always, a master at her craft, the music is, if a little old fashioned, still completely satisfying... I'm kind of in love with this little show...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Show!
It's amusing reading these reviews. So many people just don't seem to get it, but who cares? I love The Monkey Song and As We Stumble Along, the latter being a Zen masterpiece! Both reflect the genius of this show. How can you complain about something with lyrics like: "But what a thrill when lovebirds trill" or "But heartbeats rush when sweethearts gush"?Some of the jokes of course don't come off unless you see the show...otherwise, how can you possibly understand "Message from a Nightingale"?All I can say is,

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Early Beatles
'A Hard Day's Night' is not only a great rock album and great soundtrack, it is rightly regarded as the best of Beatlemania itself. There is enough of the familiar and hidden classics to make this puchase worthwhile.Certainly the title track, "Can't Buy Me Love," "And I Love Her," and "If I Fell" are worthy classics. ("If I Fell" is one of the best of the Beatles' love songs--maybe one of the best love songs period, for that matter.)Rock songs and ballads are masterfully made and mixed on this, their first album to contain all original compositions. The quality is consistent throughout. To paraphrase British writer Roy Carr, the second half is even more worthwhile."Any Time at All" is great hard rock; "I'll Cry Instead," is a fine country-rock song(foreshadowing the next 'Beatles for Sale' album) and the closer "I'll Be Back Again," is a classic Lennon ballad waiting to be unearthed. The second half also has a fine McCartney ballad, "Things We SaidToday". The exhuberant spirit never wanes on this CD and is extended with songs like "I'm Happy Just to Dance with You" and "I Should Have Known Better".Song for song, the mix, the quality, and energy are solid on this album. For those who only buy Beatles' collections, this C.D. will not seem redundant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good after 40+ Years
If you are a classic rock fan who has exhausted the Beatles' later catalogue and aren't sure if you like the early stuff as much, listen to this CD. It will convince you of how great the early Beatles were (something that people born after the 1960s might find harder to believe than those who were alive then). "I Should Have Known Better" was one of the first songs I tried to figure out on guitar. But I never bought the CD until much later. I purchased A Hard Day's Night to get closer to being a Beatles completist. I didn't expect it to be as good as it is. It's great. As Albert Goldman said, this was the closest that John came to making a solo record while he was with the Beatles. Paul's work is not nearly as strong, but George showed potential here as a songwriter. A Hard Day's Night is perhaps the Beatles' crispest and cleanest album. It rocks, has great harmonies, and crackles with the energy of guys on the top of the world. After listening to Pepper for the millionth time, you might need some good old rock and roll. A Hard Day's Night delivers that.

4-0 out of 5 stars You've got to love everything that they do!
The Beatles' 1964 album A Hard Day's Night not only is titled after a weird phrase once said by Ringo Starr, but it also symbolizes the fab four in their teenybopping, world conquering heyday long before the highly artistic and sophisticated efforts of Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper, and The White Album saw the light of day.

This product arrived in fantastic condition and is exactly what I ordered.
5-0 out of 5 stars love it!
Surprised myself, but I listen to this album more often than I ever dreamed.Excellent sound and the variety of artists increase its entertainment value.Additionally, the interpretation by today's artists are quite interesting against those of Cole Porter himself and his contemporaries. It's a buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars De-Lovely, De-Vine, De-Perfect
For decades Cole Porter's songs have been considered musical standards. It's no mystery why.Cole Porter's songs were undeniably catchy and fun when he wrote them, they were sophisticated and fun when Las Vegas headliners in the 60's performed them, and they're just as effective performed by contemporary vocalists, like on this soundtrack to the Cole Porter biopic "De-Lovely."

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
This CD is amazing, and has some of my favorite songs on it.I hope to see the broadway show sometime soon, but until then, this music will definately do.It has many hysterical numbers, such as "Schadenfreude," "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist," and "If You Were Gay."It also has some very sweet, beautiful songs, such as one of my favorites, "There's A Fine, Fine Line."I love this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Move Over Pavarotti
Josh Groban has one of the most beautiful voices around. Thank God, that is spending it doing it on classical operatic styles rather than pop rock or rap that others waste their time and money. His voice sings through you. You feel like angels are singing. His voice is powerful and beautiful. I would love to see him live. I just admire him so much that I don't care that if I don't understand Italian but I would like too.

What a gift Josh Groban has received. May his work continue to reach the soul's of others. His music reaches out to me and I am sure to tons of others around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!!!
I love Scrubs. It is both poignant and hilarious. The soundtrack just reminds me on what a great show Scrubs is.I love all of the songs. Some of the songs are a little melancholy, but so is the show sometimes.I would recommend buying this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never gets old!
Wow - this soundtrack is just a delight. It captures the variety of moods and feelings found in each episode of the show, as well as showcases a number of wonderful artists and songs. This album gets a great deal of play on my iPod, particularly the songs by Colin Hay (a favorite!) and "Hallelujah" by John Cale. The songs capture the poignant moments on the show, and recreate those moments within the listener. I highly recommend this album, whether or not (but especially IF) you are a fan of the show.

5-0 out of 5 stars CD lives up to the movie
"The Sound of Music" is one of my all-time favorite movies, and Julie Andrews' singing makes the movie and CD. Listening to the soundtrack takes you right back through the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece
The 40th edition of "The Sound of Music" soundtrack is a special gift for all the movie fans. Not only because of the quality of the sound ("The Sound of Music" has never sounded better), but also because all the vocal singing parts of the film are, for the first time, forever registered. So, you have the whole concert before they escape from the nazis, you have Julie Andrews coming back from the abbey and meeting the children and dame Julie singing to Charmian Carr "You are 16", all in chronological order, respecting the movie narrative. It's more than we all have been waiting for. It's a masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sound of Near-Perfection
I am very happy that this 40th Anniversary edition of THE SOUND OF MUSIC Soundtrack is a vast improvement over any of the previous RCA CD issues. For the first time, it presents ALL the song cues in the order of the film, and the RCA tapes have never sounded better. Dame Julie's sterling portrayal of Maria is reason enough to plump for this CD, and her crystalline voice has never sounded better. She is ably backed by the critic-proof cast including Bill Lee's down-to-earth Captain, Margery McKay's Mother Abbess, and the glorious septet of children. This CD presents the tracks from the original RCA album, in more dynamic sound than on previous CDs, in sound that positively shines. These tracks intermingle with the Captain's first version of Edelweiss with Liesl, the Laendler and the Sixteen Going on Seventeen reprise. They are all lovingly incorporated into the soundtrack and the presentation is perhaps enough to rival the superb sounding Fox gold CD. This CD also includes the reprises of My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi and So Long, Farewell, and the Entr'acte and End Titles. They all make their CD debut, except that the tinny sound quality sounds like the producers recorded it off a videocassette or a DVD of the movie, because you can hear some dialogue and sound effects and a funny sound quality. All-told, although I do wish that the CD producers used the 20th-Century Fox tracks exclusively for this release and utilised longer versions of the Preludium and the reprise of Edelweiss, this CD offers wonderful sound quality despite some tape hiss in the RCA tracks. The booklet contains some coloured stills from the film, yet I lament that it lacks not just the lyrics but a detailed analysis of the musical, the filming and a soundtrack annotation. Overall, a wonderful presentation of a justly-celebrated soundtrack and a true sign that this soundtrack is getting the proper treatment it deserves. What more needs to be said than BUY IT NOW. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nourishment for your Imagination
When I mention my appreciation of Danny Elfman's work to other people, a question I often get is "What kind of music does he do?"
5-0 out of 5 stars Master piece
Serenada Schizophrana is probably the best work Elfman ever made. It is mature, virtuoso, deep and powerful. All his usuals styles are transcends, and the six mouvements are rich in shades and tones. The mouvements are all interesting in their own musical way, and invit us to a long travel inside the genius and strange brain of Danny Elfman. The fifth, "I Forget", which is probably his most wonderful piece, looks like a tragic fantasy opera with beautiful females choirs. Serenada Schizophrana is a truly amazing orchestral piece, but not easily accessible. Patience and lot of listening are recommanded in order to understand the richness of this work of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music for the Hitchcock Movie Never Filmed
Danny Elfman's "Serenada Schizophrana" is best decribed as a score for the Alfred Hitchcock movie never filmed. It has all the elements of a dark and cinematic film score by Bernard Hermann. There is also the humour of Elfman's work for Tim Burton. With a total running time of about 45 minutes, this is truly a disc that leaves you wanting more.If you have an SACD system then you will not be disappointed - the 5.1 surround sound is spectacular but never forced.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. ... Fashion be damned: Pop culture is just one big Hometown Buffet forwriter-director Quentin Tarantino. Nowhere has that sensibility beenmore apparent than on his hand-picked soundtrack choices, and this ofttongue-in-cheek tale of a female assassin's revenge (his first film insix years) is no exception. With dizzy, almost palpable glee, Tarantinoevokes the international hall-of-mirrors influences that energizemartial arts films and much of Asian pop culture in general. Thus thehip-hop of Wu Tang's RZA (who, along with composer Charles Bernstein, concocts what passes for the score's traditional cues) somehow findsitself but one ingredient in a heady souffle that includes vintage TVand film cue rarities (Al Hirt's main title from Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The song with the siren opening is ...
... Quincy Jones' theme from "Ironside".An excerpt from it is on the soundtrack.

4-0 out of 5 stars Revenge and The Black Mamba
Comas are a deep sleep wherein a victim is neither living nor dead. The mantle of darkness protect the soul from the reality which put it there. However, an ancient proverb states, that "if the spirit has unfinished business in the world of the living, then woe betide those who put it there." Such is the premise of Kill Bill. Once part of an elite group of world wide assassins, 'B.B', the victim, {Uma Thurman} awakens and recalls well who tried to kill her. Throughout the rest of the film, viewers are introduced to her former friends all code named after the world's most venomous snakes. Not sure of the reason why she was nearly murdered, " Black Manba" as B.B. was code named, (The deadliest snake) goes after each of the assassins. It has been suggested, were Bruce Lee to have lived, this vehicle would have been his. Instead, the story was redesigned with a feminine twist and all the explosive action and martial arts confrontations were designed in the fertile mind of action Director Quinton Tarentino. From the first to the last, exciting sub-plots and well-choreographed martial arts scenes give this film it's special quality. The main target of B.B.'s revenge is of course none other than Master (Kung Fu) David Carradine as Bill. It is he and his 'Snake" team which consists of Lucy Liu who plays O-Ren Ishii, Vivica A. Fox as Vernita Green, Daryl Hannah as Elle Driver and Michael Madson who now become the intended targets. Interest in the film is ample as each killer has their own story and each contains the special formula of subtle sex, exciting physical confrontation and superb samurai action. In the end, what can be said of Kill Bill One? If this film is fantastic, I can't wait for the part II. (of which there is) Excellent. ****

4-0 out of 5 stars Wide range, Good listening
Yeah, we all know it doesn't have the Hero of Canton song on it, but the only time they recorded that song was while they were filming. You can find it sometimes online, but it'll still have the voices of the actors in the foreground.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty much for fans of Firefly.
I don't think I really need to go into details that this soundtrack is pretty much just for fans of the series, if you've seen Firefly you know to expect the same beautiful and sublime music that you can find in the series. If you've never watched the series before please just stop reading this and go rent the Firefly complete series DvDs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent series
If you enjoyed the original Star Trek series, or Babylon 5 you will probably enjoy this serieas as much as my family did.The character development is exceptional as is the acting and witty banter you expect with one of Josh's shows. My entire family enjoyed every single episode! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for little ones
I am not a fan of little kids (under 5) sitting and watching a 2 hour movie. However, listening to soundtracks of musicals is a great thing for them. There is nothing cuter than hearing a toddler belt out "When I fink of a day that's gray and wonely I just pick up my chin and grin and say..." while you are driving. I love it! Plus, there seems to be a small window of opportunity for this since the kids become more inhibited as they get older.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Recording
I personally prefer Rebecca Caine over Sarah Brightman, but it doesn't matter. This was a beautiful recording. :D

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Musical Phenomenon!
After 20 years since it opened, THE PHANTOM has become the longest running, most popular stage show, and highest grossing Entertainment venture of all time, bringing in more earnings than any other stage show, any movie, (including the series of Star wars, Titanic, and Lord of the Rings)!! This Double disc volume of the original London cast is a Spectacular Rendition of this timeless Masterpiece. Not only are the performances by the entire Cast including 'THE' Phantom himself, Michael Crawford, who's melodic, extraordinary range and powerful vocals, make for fantastic Vocal tracks that capture the essence of 'Phantom,' but the Score and the way the orchestra plays it is powerful and very Full. Compared to both the Canadian Cast recording and Movie Record, The London Cast's Orchestra is by far the Most Full sounding overall.
4-0 out of 5 stars 75% more words!And 20% less carbs!
At the time that I'm writing this review there are 379 reviews for the original 1986 London cast recording of "The Phantom of the Opera".It can be safely surmised that many people have opinions about this particular hallmark of musical theater. It also seems requisite that any reviews written after 2004 must bring up the movie soundtrack and compare the two leads, with varying levels of love for one and hate for the other.I shall attempt to summarize some of the more frequently repeated comments here, attempting to adhere to bare facts while impressing as little opinion as possible into what is a very personal musical.

Editorial Review

Noted English screenwriter Richard Curtis makes his directorial bow with this romantic comedy that follows the dizzying foibles of no less than a dozen couples, featuring a cast that includes Hugh Grant as a bachelor British PM and Billy Bob Thornton as a disturbing hybrid of the worst of Clinton and Bush.Seemingly taking its lead from Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing soundtrack
the soundtrack makes you relive the moments of the movie, but most importantly what you felt when you were in that scenerio.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I am very happy with my purchase.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dido Steals The Show!
Much more than a typical romance soundtrack, the soundtrack is equally balanced. Having non-Christmas songs and Christmas songs, this soundtrack also has some happy songs and sad songs. My favorites being Here With Me performed By Dido and I'll See It Through performed by Texas. The soundtrack is highly recommended. Dido steals the show with Here With Me, a beautiful and intelligant song that has a meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everybody get down!
This is undoubtably one of the best soundtracks ever released.Ten of the 17 songs here were hits, including seven #1 hits.Of course, only about half the music here was specifically recorded for the movie.Specifically, the first four Bee Gees songs, the Yvonne Elliman song, the Tavares song and the instrumental score by David Shire were especially recorded for the film. The rest of the songs are a year or two older, and some of them had already been hits long before the movie came out.Of course, none of that detracts from the quality of the album. It's really fun to listen to, unless you're one of those people who insist that "disco sucks".

5-0 out of 5 stars you can't help but dance
Ahh....memories. This CD will bring back great memories of dancing the night away. I dare anyone to listen to these songs and NOT get up and start moving to the beat. Pure disco bliss!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahhh to be 19 in 1977...
The 1977 landmark film and this soundtrack that bore its name did the impossible - made Texas youngsters look at young people who lived in New York City as cultural role models, even if only for a brief period in time.

4-0 out of 5 stars "This is Halloween" and More.
THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS is a bizarre film with a charming (though somewhat morbid) sensibility. There are many parts that make movie whole, but one of the things I enjoyed most about the film was the musical moments when the characters burst into song. This soundtrack to the film includes the vocal arrangements from the movie as well as the score written by Danny Elfman. Some of my favorite tunes on the album are:
2-0 out of 5 stars Not my kind of music
After reading such good reviews, I decided to buy the CD.Only to discover it is not my kind of music. This is like a kindergarten kind of music.

5-0 out of 5 stars really good
I really loved this soundtrack. It is so complete if you compare to the movie. That is a good investment, and so hard to find nowadays ! ... Read more
