Editorial Review

At the time of its release, this was the watershed for soundtracks, selling a kazillion copies. It documents Whitney Houston's character in the Kevin Costner movie, which required Houston to play only herself (although one hopes she wouldn't end up with someone as smarmy as Costner). The album is as much a testament to the production of Babyface who, through the mid-1990s, actually was the mainstream of contemporary hit music. Houston's singing is much better than her acting, and almost every song enjoyed a long tenure at the top of all the charts. Along with "I Will Always Love You" and five other Houston songs, the soundtrack also features Lisa Stansfield, Kenny G with Aaron Neville, and Joe Cocker with Sass Jordan. --Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Only Good For The Whitney Songs!!
The only reason I purchased this soundtrack back in 1992 was because I was a big Whitney Houston fan. It is worth the purchasee for her tracks that are on here. This is the biggest selling soundtrack ever! It is certified 17 platinum in the US alone and spent 20 weeks at Number #1. It also gave Whitney her biggest hit ever!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Star Was Born
Whatever you may think of her today, Whitney's vocal ability on this CD is amazing and would be difficult to imitate by female singers on the radio today. For those who call it anything other than beautiful, where were you and your sordid opinions when the song "I Will Always Love You" first hit the airwaves?Originally recorded by Dolly Parton, Miss Houston's interpretation and impeccable performance of "I Will Always Love You" catapulted her into super stardom.Videos also turned her into an international icon of celebrated proportions as The Body Guard Soundtrack continued to climb the charts, set new records and earn numerous awards. In my opinion, Miss Houston need not prove herself any longer. For even without uttering another note, Whitney will go down in history as one of the greatest voices of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Total Crap, but it made Nick Lowe a millionaire
This album is a monstrous piece of watery cow poo. So why do I give it 5 stars? Because the royalties from it made Nick Lowe, the writer of What's So Funny 'bout Peace Love and Understanding, a millionaire. Granted, the cover of that song on this album is worse than Kevin Costner's acting, but who cares? The fact that Nick Lowe, who might be the wittiest songwriter of the past 25 years, got rich from this crap is a textbook example of irony. Now stop looking at the Bodyguard soundtrack, and go buy some whatever Nick Lowe albums are still in print. ... Read more

By this time in her career, Whitney Houston had a formula sound, and here she leans on it hard, surrounding herself with adult contemporary heavy-hitters like Diane Warren and Babyface. This wasn't the monster her previous records were, most notably Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars introducing whitney houston
i've had this album for years and i'm listening to it now writing this review. i've never watched the movie but the preacher's wife soundtrack is brilliant. whitney takes on gospel and wins--by a mile. every track in the album is good, trhey still sound great over five years later. and the good news is it only goes up from that level. every song is soulful and showcase a mature, strong whitney who has a few collaborations with the georgia mass choir and a few other artists.
5-0 out of 5 stars Go Whitney!
I agree with another online reviewer who simply says "Let The Angel Sing" and I reiterate their opinion that "I Love The Lord", sung by Miss Houston will make the hair on your arms stand up!Whitney is absolutely amazing and she should be.On this particular performance, Whitney is not just a Diva, she is in her element! Her origins go back to the choir of her youth, under the direction of none other than her own mother, Cissy Houston, the awesome soprano from the "Sweet Inspirations" and former back up singer for Arehta Franklin, the "Queen" of Soul.Whitney's gospel performance is awesome and will be a classic for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Gospel Album to ever hit the face of this earth.
I don't mean to be any disrespect to the likes of Shirley Ceasar and Albertina Walker, but anyone who is a Whitney Houston fan, knows that she was meant to make an album like tthis. This is one of the best albums of the Gospel genre and the R&B world. Whitney really went back to her roots on this album and no matter what she is going through at this present day and time, she is still one of the greatest singers to ever grace this earth. She has crossed over into that treasure where people love her and want to see her doing well. Finally I would just like to say to everyone, especially African-Americans and true Whitney fans, lets nurse Whitney back to good spirits and success so that she can show Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton how its really done. WE ARE DOING NOTHING BUT MAKING IT WORSE BY MAKING FUN AND BRINGING HER DOWN. WE LOVE U WHITNEY! THANX FOR YOUR WORK! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnolia Soundtrack
I love every song on this CD, Aimee Mann did a great job on the score. I would recomend this CD highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT
Aimmee Mann is an absolutely talented artist, and her contributions to Magnolia are of nothing less than what is to be expected of her. Each of her songs has its own taste, its own feel, and its own uniqueness to it. She definately doesn't try to overdo any of her songs on the popularity factor.

Ani DiFranco steals the show with her ace rendition of Dusty Springfield's "Wishin' and Hopin'." But DiFranco was playing the lyrics for smirks, which made it hard to wrap yourself up in the performance. Elsewhere, you get Mary-Chapin Carpenter covering "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," a version of "What the World Needs Now Is Love" by Jackie DeShannon; Diana King (of "Stir It Up" fame) doing a lite-reggae version of "I Say a Little Prayer," and a Tony Bennett moment. Burt Bacharach's songs are all over this CD, which is good. But aside from DiFranco and Bennett, many of the artists turned loose to sing them could've been better deployed. Overall, rather slight. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Like The Music In The Movie
I love watching movies and then purchasing the soundtracks shortly after I can't stop singing the music on the movie. I purchased this soundtrack recently and let me tell you that it is good but I was somewhat disappointed. I think that the songs are very soothing and nice, but not quite what was in the movie. I guess what I was looking for was a lot of what I heard during the movie, the cast singing and things like that. Some good advice before buying, keep in mind that if you are looking for something closer to what is heard on the movie, this is not exactly it. If you like the music in the movie in general and do not care about how it is played as long as you get the same words, then you should buy the soundtrack.
5-0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack as fun as the movie!!!
Such great music!! Nice that it includes some of the songs by the actors, many soundtracks miss those. Notably missing, however, is my personal favorite -- Dermot Mulroney singing The Way You Look Tonight. Now that would make it complete!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Stop Watching it!!
A romantic comedy that makes you want to watch it over and over again - somehow hoping for a different ending but knowing the movies ending is the only one that could make sense while tearing your heart out!!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE WEDDING SINGER ROCKS!!!
I love The Wedding Singer! It is my favorite movie ever!!! I can watch it over and over again and not get tired of it. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore rock! Plus, not only is the movie awesome, but the soundtrack is awesome too! You can never get enough of The Wedding Singer! brie in washington (and to make the point straight, I AM almost 14, so haha to being a kid, even if this last statement was immature.)

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the songs I'm looking for ...
... isn't on this collection. OR 'Vol. 2' of this soundtrack series. If only The Cure's "Boy's Don't Cry" (in the film, it is playing in the background during the scene when Robby's best friend, Sammy, is visiting him in his basement apartment) was on either the first or second soundtrack disc of this film, there wouldn't be hesitancy to purchase (nor would there be this review, so there's the upside!).Seriously, I'm still gonna get both these discs. However, the only reason I can figure that The Cure is not on these is licensing issues.

Editorial Review

Few filmmakers managed to capture the awkward coming-of-age catastrophes of '80s teens the way John Hughes did, just as few soundtracks encapsulate the sound of an era better than this one does. It's not the best 1986 had to offer, but it's a cohesive whole, transporting the listener to that other time, imagined or otherwise. There's enough variety to ensure that it doesn't become wallpaper, and very little filler. "Left of Center" by Suzanne Vega, with Joe Jackson on piano, is tremendous and transcends generations. Psychedelic Furs frontman Richard Butler has long been bemused about Hughes not taking Molly Ringwald's character's name from the title song, which inspired the film, but everyone was paying too much attention to what Ducky was wearing to notice anyway. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for fans of the film or anything 80s
John Hughes' "Pretty in Pink" has always been a favorite movie of mine. I fell in love with it immediately. It is easily one of the greatest teen movies ever and is rivaled only by "The Breakfast Club" as the best "Brat Pack" flick of the 80s.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much loved music
I was in HS when the movie/music came out.Wore out my tape, twice, and melted another on my car dash in the hot sun and had to wrestle a fourth tape copy from my little brother who'd since discovered how awesome the Furs and Bunnymen were.Ahhh, memories.Still enjoy a good reminiscing now and then.I think I've gotta break down and buy it on CD finally!(Four rather than five stars just means I'm a tough grader! It's a great album, nice mix, very 80's retro.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
I had watched Pretty in Pink a couple of times when I was about four. Years went by, and I found myself in a used CD store, throwing over a couple of bucks for this soundtrack, I went home, stuck it in my CD player, and all of these memories from the movie came rushing back, I cried. It was so odd, I hadn't remembered any of the movie before then, but the minute If you Leave came on, I could picture Andy hugging Ducky....

For better or worse, when then-journeyman actor-writer Sylvester Stallone created the character of punchy pugilist Rocky Balboa, he did more than offer all the ne'er-do-wells in the world the hope of someday being a contender; he created a cinematic sensibility--perverse optimism in the face of insane odds--that's infected Hollywood films ever since. And if Bill Conti's horn-fanfare theme has become an instantly evocative cliché, it's only because it fit the proceedings so damned well, like a clenched fist in a boxing glove--or a slice of Velveeta on a Ritz cracker. Conti may be no Morricone, but then, when was the last time you heard the theme to Read more

Touching music from the late 70's that complements the soulfull story of a working-class, American hero. The struggles Rocky faced in his simple, humble life are beautifully captured in this score.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of us do remember the past
The movie was great so how could the soundtrack be anything less. The characters dressed and acted just like my friends and I did during that time period and certainly listened to the same music.Though I was an adult rather than a student the era was the same.I am so pleased with the soundtrack it never leaves my CD wallet.Anyone who loves the rock of the late 70s and very early 80s will be glad they bought this album. The best artists, terrific songs, a good time will be had by all.

4-0 out of 5 stars You're better at that than I am.
My soul reaches out to those who have had substance abuse problems. This movie touches on this subject with touching sincerity and heartfelt distress. The movie begins with a child trapped in the body of an older man.He tries to free the ego of a man whose life he saved in a previous karmic cycle but for him there is no salvation. While this manchild flees to civilization in hopes of finding a Bodhisattva the karmic cycle continues its unending rotation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack to one of the greatest movies ever!
After my first viewing of "Dazed" at the age of 15, I became absolutely obsessed with the film, and soon bought the movie on DVD. I've watched it so many times since, I've lost count, and it quickly became one of my favorite movies of all time. It has awesome dialogue (Slater's story of how George Washington was in a cult who were into aliens is CLASSIC!), hilarious scenes (I love the "trash cans meet mailboxes" scene, cracks me up every time), great characters (Don Dawson, Wooderson, Slater, Pink), excellent acting (by all of the cast), and most of all, KICK A** MUSIC! This was one of those rare films where the soundtrack CD sales out performed the movies box office sales, but the movie is still great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Snapshot of Seattle Times
Listening to the "Singles" Soundtrack is liking listening to a launching pad.Cameron Crow, he of much music fandom, directed the Singles flick at just the right time to help propel the Seattle grunge sound to a much larger audience. It's what happens when a seemingly alternative movement gets popularized...which is not a bad thing.Does a mass audience change the dynamics and quality of the music?I think not.Pearl Jam Ten is every bit as good as Pearl Jam No Code, so just because grunge got popularized through the success of Nirvana, PJ, Alice, doesn't knock the power of the music and the quality of the movement.
5-0 out of 5 stars Could be the best soundtrack of all time
Soundtracks never meant a lot to me. In fact, prior to buying this, I had never even taken the time to listen to one completely because I would get so frustrated with the choices so early in the CD. When my interest in 90s grunge was peaking is when I found the Singles soundtrack. My obsession with grunge has since diminished a tad bit but I still find myself listening to this all the time even though I've had it for a long time. From Alice In Chains' dark anthem Would? to The Lovemongers very good take on the Zeppelin classic Battle Of Evermore, I'm hardpressed to think of a soundtrack that delivers like this one does.

This magnificent soundtrack perfectly captures the grandeur of Edward Zwick's 1994 film. It sounds the way a Montana sunset looks: big, wide, far-reaching, and full of color. In fact, the music is so good most viewers were able to overlook Brad Pitt's acting. This is such a powerful soundtrack that sound editors frequently use portions of it as an early trailer score for other films. Composed, conducted and produced by James Horner, Read more

So James Horner repeats himself.Get over it.The more I hear this complaint, the more I get sick of it.Does Legends of the Fall sound similar to other Horner works?Yeah, sometimes.Does that matter?Hell no.This is one of the most moving and powerful works of music that I've ever heard. It's a tremendous achievement and one of my favourite Horner soundtracks.

Godspell was the foundation of my family. My parents met in a play of Godspell. They had the movie version, and we watched it so much. We even bought the soundtrack to the film and took it with us on vacation. We all knew all the songs and sung along. We all have pretty good singing voices, so it was a lot of fun! I still get choked up when I hear "On The Willows"...

From the first tune on this disc, Burn by The Cure, you get sucked in.The songs take you on a ride through the movie that you can close your eyes and follow which turns out to be a beautiful ride indeed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Soundtrack That Compliments A Great Movie...
I remember the first time I watched THE CROW movie when it came out in theaters and loving the movie, and sadly learning that Brandon Lee's poetic performance was undercut by his premature death. It was an unfair end for such a brilliant performance, and guaranteed had he still been alive to do the sequel, it would have done almost as well as this stellar movie did. The soundtrack almost eclipses the movie itself, but the movie and the music both match. The sound that dominates most of this soundtrack falls into alternative, metal, goth, industrial, and even a touching ode to close the album.

The Crow is my favorite movie of all time, hands down. The moving love/death/life/revenge plot coupled with Brandon Lee's exceptional performance and very talented supporting cast is more than enough than for The Crow to stand the test of time. However, probably the strongest point of the movie lies in its truly awesome soundtrack that captures the mood of the movie perfectly.

2-0 out of 5 stars My Fair Lady Isn't So Fair
I am a die-hard Julie Andrews fan, so that alreadybrings it down a notch. I also really like Audrey Hepburn and the fact that she didnt do her own singing makes it seem fake.

3-0 out of 5 stars Half of a Beatles Album
After the Herculean effort the Fab Four put into "The Beatles" aka "The White Album", the Beatles took a break with "Yellow Submarine". Over half of the album consists of George Martin's orchestral score to the 1969 animated film. Two songs were culled from previous discs- the title track from "Revolver" and "All You Need Is Love" from "Magical Mystery Tour". Because of this, this is probably the least essential Beatles album to own. The Lennon-McCartney penned "All Together Now" is a nice enough childrens' song but in the context of their usual brilliant output it's a bit of a throwaway. The Lennon-sung "Hey Bulldog" fairs better with its simple killer main guitar riff, "Lady Madonna"-like piano and lively performance. For me, the standout tracks are George Harrison's two contributions with "It's All Too Much" being particularly wonderful. The blazing lead guitar and the horn section on this anthem for the '60's are bloody fantastic. "Only A Northern Song" was recorded during the sessions for "Sgt. Pepper's". It's a dig at the Beatles' publishing company and one of my favorite 'Harrisongs' with its self-deprecating humor, bizarre organ and assorted sound effects. These two songs alone make "Yellow Submarine" worth having. See you in Pepperland!

3-0 out of 5 stars Worst Album for Their Best Movie
'Yellow Submarine' is the hardest Beatles' album to review because it is two pieces of work. There are the originals, like 'Magical Mystery Tour', which could have been put on an EP (extended play with five to eight songs, like a half-album) and the original score composed by George Martin. It is a haphazard work for arguably their best movie. Some of the Beatles' originals are decent to very good, but the added classics, the title track and "All You Need Is Love" don't all mesh well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just a soundtrack... to the greatest cartoon ever!
Makes me laugh when I read bad reviews about any Beatles album.

Editorial Review

Based on Irish writer Roddy Doyle's novel and lovingly directed with admirable restraint by the sometimes bombastic Alan Parker, this quirky 1991 tribute to the enduring and universal power of American R&B took some cynical criticism for its reliance on Baby Boomer-era classics such as "Mustang Sally," "Take Me to the River," and "In the Midnight Hour." But that sword cuts two ways: by casting a motley crew of real musicians, including the guts 'n' gravel-voiced young vocalist Andrew Strong, Parker didn't have to do much coaxing to reveal the obvious respect and affection his players have for this music. The material may not be fresh, but the love with which it's played is timeless.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Superior Movie!
Oh my goodness, for the umpteenth time I have thoroughly enjoyed this movie! Yes, I'm a baby boomer. So what? The music is perfect and this time I particularly feasted on Andrew Strong's marvelous renditions of songs. He is fantastic! His care of so many of these chestnuts is thrilling. Why, oh why isn't there a Commitments band? This soundtrack plays at events in my group of friends on a regular basis. We may be gettin' older but the music still gets into the soul!

Editorial Review

Director Joel Schumacher, who went on to helm many big-budget, tiny-intellectual movies, gave us an 1980s update of the story of the vampire. It was all hip, good-looking, and tremendously vacuous. Similarly, the music doesn't break any new ground or offer much that's timeless. INXS' collaborations with Jimmy Barnes are fine, for instance, but Foreigner vocalist Lou Gramm's "Lost in the Shadows (The Lost Boys)" verges on the painful in a way that only overwrought 1980s music can. Roger Daltrey's take on Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" is by the numbers, and so wasted. It's only Echo and the Bunnymen's cover of The Doors' "People Are Strange" that warrants much attention, even if it's, erm, buried. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff, indeed
The editorial review of the soundtrack on this page was a bit harsh.Sure, no new ground was broken music-wise here (the majority of the songs are remakes of 60's and 70's tunes) but, tell you what, it's WAY better than the canned, corporate crap that's foisted on the buying public nowadays.

Editorial Review

This Clint Eastwood vanity-project was one of the biggest box office disappointments of 1997, despite a masterful performance by Kevin Spacey, Eastwood's typically subtle direction and, to these ears anyway, one of the most satisfying collections of songs gathered in service of a film in many a year. It didn't hurt that they were all penned by the late, great Johnny Mercer (a native of Savannah, GA, the film's locale and most crucial, underrated element) and with the exception of Tony Bennett's "I Wanna Be Around" and Sinatra's classic "Summer Wind," were rendered by an all-star team of jazz players (Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Kevin Eubanks, Christian McBride among them) and an impressive line-up of vocalists including k.d. lang, Paula Cole, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Cassandra Wilson, Alison Krauss, Diana Krall, and Kevin Mahogany. Eastwood has long been a jazz devotee and, in recent years, eager proselytizer; this album plays like a love letter to one of his most beloved musicians and composers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an Absolutely Beautiful Album
I can not begin to tell you how much my girlfriend and I enjoy the music on the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.It is an incredibly beautiful experience.Even Clint Eastwood and Kevin Spacey admirably perform a couple of Johnny Mercer's less demanding songs."Skylark" by K. D. Lang will simply take your breath away.I am at this very moment listening to Tony Bennett's"I Wanna Be Around."This collection of songs should be on your shelf.Five stars?I wish I could give it more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Midnight In The Garden of Evil: Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picturer
What a wonderful collection of Johnny Mercer's music. Many of my favorite songs, Autumn Leaves, Skylark, Days of Wine and Roses, Laura as well as being sung by fabulous singers such as Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Kevin Spacey. This music is truly " Too Marvelous For Words"

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Soundtrack
If you like classic ballad style jazz tunes, then this is a must for your collection - written by the late great Johnny Mercer, who won many Grammys and Oscars for his musical scores.
