Editorial Review

Even if you don't agree with Neil Young's politics, you can't help but be daunted by the intersection of his genius and ire on his second album in less than seven months. It is the very rare artist who is able to channel indignation and moral disgust in such a coherent and forceful way--without sacrificing any of the vivid imagery, passion, or the high level of musicality that we have come to expect from him over the past four decades. But that's not what elevates this album: it's his pure, naked, visceral reaction to the Bush administration's foreign policy, building on a canon of outrage that he began with 1970's "Ohio," penned in the wake of the Kent State student deaths. But here he goes one better, filling in the lines that he began to draw on 2003's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I kneel to Neil.
This is one Neil Young album that the majority of people will judge before they even hear it. Meaning, any anti-Bush, pro-USA, Neil fan will enjoy it. For the most part that's probably true. It is mostly track after track of ripping apart the Bush administration and war, yet also maintaining a sense of hope and love for the country. Lyrically that's what it is. Musically I find it's similar to his mid-90's album "Mirror Ball". It's rocking Neil for the most part, and appropriate for the topics. Not every song is a winner, but I really like the tracks "The Restless Consumer", "Let's Impeach The President", and "Lookin' For A Leader". Subtle? Not really, but I like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars No throwaway songs here
When I read that the album was hastily put together I expected it to be rough around the edges. Electic Neil always sounds that way to me anyway. Part of the charm. What I did't expect was how musical it would be nor the depth of the lyrics. Surely some of his best work. Pretty amazing for an aging hippie of 61. Makes you wonder how good he'll be when he's 81.

Better yet, why complain at all, being HEAVILY PREDISPOSED to certain tracks anyway? The point?Look this is a very good retropective release of music's most known singer/songwriter/ikon of the century!!!There are plenty of styles of music represented here -for the novice ardent or "whomever" fan of his!!!

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. "Never mock a red-blooded American." I suppose what he meant by the red-blooded American are the individuals who work in factories, pursue typical heterosexual relationships, love the roar of a motorcycle, and spend most of their weekends working on their cars. It was Bruce Springsteen who rose upon the spirits of these citizens in the 1970's, with songs about the Atlantic City boardwalk and the everyday traumas of being poor and without privilege.

One question would be: What took him so long? After all, a contemporary like Van Morrison has sold boatloads of his single-disc best-of set to buyers wary of diving into that deep catalog without a primer to get them started. So three and a half decades into his solo career, Neil Young finally delivers his version of that most modest of albums--the pre-holiday "hits" overview. What's surprising, coming from such a proud maverick, is its conventionality. Granted, the original master mixes are a boon for fans, but otherwise, there's not much here for loyalists who quite likely already possess the original "Like a Hurricane" on a couple of albums, as well as a handful of live interpretations scanning the years. Since Young cracked the Top 10 only once (1972's "Heart of Gold"), this set is built around concert staples as "Cinnamon Girl," "Rockin' in the Free World," and "Hey, Hey, My My" rather than chart favorites. Despite Young's honorable standing as a still-vital graybeard, the disc is skewed heavily toward his early work, shortchanging some mighty productive recent years. Peripheral fans may find this set of interest, but faithful followers are better advised to investigate the DVD version, which, at least, includes videos, photos, lyrics, and Web links. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Single CD Collection of Neil Young's Hits
Making a single disc of Neil Young's biggest hits is not an easy task. Back in 1977, he released a two disc career retrospective called Decade, which is still one of the greatest compilations in rock and roll history.
5-0 out of 5 stars THANKS, NEIL. THIS COULDN'T BE ANY BETTER !
If we look hard enough, we can always find something we don't like about "Greatest Hits" and "Best of" releases by our favorite recording artists. Mostly, it's the songs left off or the songs left on, but it can be other things as well. This time I'm not going to let my expectations ruin, what is to me, a perfect "Neil Young Greatest Hits" cd. The remastering is exquisite, and this is most evident on "Needle and the Damage Done". It sounds like Neil and his guitar are right in the room. The song selection is perfect, with a nice balance between the acoustic songs and the rockers. The songs are in chronological order, which gives the listener a sense of Young's career history. The album cover is a photo of Neil with an acoustic guitar, from a time in his career that most people probably associate with him. There are no songs after 1992, but rest assured that there will be a GH vol. 2 in the future. I'm a long time fan of Neil Young, and as a concise cd of his best work, this couldn,t be any better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Near perfect disc for the casual Neil Young fan
THE BAND: Neil Young (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, piano) and an assortment of musicians (too many to mention here) over the past 4 decades.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reconnecting with Neil Young
A big Neil Young fan in the 60s and 70s, I hadn't followed his music in many years (or any other popular music, for that matter). One of my 8th grade students, knowing how I feel about the war in Iraq, gave me Neil's LIVING WITH WAR. I loved it, so I checked out reviews of PRAIRIE WIND, and I bought it. As far as I'm concerned, it's a masterwork. The songs are incredibly moving, especially for someone who is Neil's age. I love this man for having made it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neil Young is Mr Soul
This is an essential Neil Young album. Taking yet another turn in his long, interesting and forever relevant career Neil follows a country rock muse and his words and music is delivered in a heltfelt and moving way that is straight from his soul. Neil faced several personal traumas during 2005, not the least the death of his father and his own health concerns which he has since rebounded from in emphatic fashion.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Cheap Product....could have been better
I was worried about how good this would be when I saw the cover. It is a cheap looking cover. It looks like one of those junky CD's you order on late night TV.Maybe something KTel puts out.It turns out that it is not horrible, is actually pretty good, but it could have been much better.
4-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the DVD, 4 for the CD
I'm a fan of all the artists on here independently, so to find them here in one concert was a treat. The only problem I have with this package is that the CD leaves off the best songs from the DVD. Keb' Mo's blues jam on "No Gettin' Over You" overshadows "Love Letter." I just love the song "Papa Come Quick" so I wish it was on the CD, though Alison has a smaller part than on "You." "Well, Well, Well" is the best song on here, again omitted from the CD in lieu of "Two Lights in the Nightime." And Norah's "Tennessee Waltz" is much more interesting than "I Don't Want..."
4-0 out of 5 stars Bonnie Is Consistently Good
Bonnie Raitt is certainly one of the most consistent artists of the past 35 years. While that might mean that her work is often predictable, it also means that it is usually very good. Since her debut, Raitt's approach hasn't really changed much at all; she still mixes ballads, rock, and folk-oriented music and infuses all of it with a strong sense of the blues. About the only thing that has changed over the years is the level of recognition that she receives. The combination of her voice and slide-guitar tone is now instantly recognizable by just about anyone, and here numerous Grammy awards have helped elevate her to a semi-legendary status.

"Lennon Legend" is a twenty track, one disc overview of John Lennon's solo career, released in 1997. It is remastered, but unlike the new "Working Class Hero" compilation, it is not remixed, so the levels and presence of all the instruments will be just how you'll remember from the radio.

It's hard to imagine, but Beatles resident mystic George Harrison has arguably become the band's most curmudgeonly cynic. We offer as evidence this splendidly remastered 30th-anniversary edition of his 1970 multidisc solo epic. If the mini-boxed set's booklet and twin inner CD sleeves won't convince you (the album's familiar cover is colorized and altered to include backdrops of a freeway-tangled cityscape and nuclear reactor cooling towers, respectively), then maybe his liner-note apology for Phil Spector's "big production" (kind of like Da Vinci grousing about Mona's crooked smile) or his laconic, stripped-down, 2000 rethink of "My Sweet Lord" will. With such a mindset, it's unsurprising Harrison has allowed a nearly decade-and-a-half gap to grow between recordings. Still, no amount of grumpy auto-revisionism can subtract from the admittedly overwrought majesty of these tracks, which were the logical sonic extension of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Post-Beatles, but not up to Beatles Standard
My musical awakening came on the back of three artists - George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Jethro Tull. They were three 'sounds' I just loved at the age of 12. Of them, I've remained a JT fan to this day, and a Bob Dylan fan until his Christian era (though I still listen avidly to his music up to that point). George Harrison I never followed beyond Living in the Material World. The last thing I bought was Extra Texture and found it disappointing.

Growing up in Indiana, you couldn't NOT be a Mellencamp fan.I embraced his music and lyrics with a passion, and to this day, he remains my favorite artist. As for this collection, I bought it although I have every CD he has recorded. What goes most unnoticed to me is the lack of respect his musicians most rightly have earned.I could have done without When Jesus Left Birmingham, and he could have included several other songs, most notable to me would be Between a Laugh and a Tear. But John and the record label get it mostly right.Another reviewer noted that the sax solo in Love and Happiness is a nuisance, but I find it my favorite part of the song, and yes, it is louder in the mix.John and his band rocks, and you won't regret picking this up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Remastered?
This is a great album. The only complaint I have is the remastering. About 2/3 through the song "Night Moves" there is a worbling in and out that sticks out like a sore thumb. It made me cringe. It sounded like a worn out cassette tape. I could've made a CD from an LP that would have sounded better than that mess. To me, it ruined the song. I'll have to listen from the greatest hits I suppose.

3-0 out of 5 stars Against the Wind
The CD I got is a "digitally remastered" version of the original. It seems to me that they took the opportunity to smooth out the rough edges in Seger's voice, like the used to do to Roger Daltry.
4-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Seger CD. His zenith has you boppin.
From the beginning with "Horizontal Bop" to the closing with "Shining Brightly," Seger exceeds "Night Moves in quantity and quality. He got more radio play off of this CD, and from more stations. "Her Strut" is one of my favorite Seger songs. And "Fire Lake, Betty Lou, Accompany Me," and "Against The Wind" are all fabulous Seger classics, lyricallly and musically. I know there's lots of folks who say there wasn't much breadth to Seger's musical ability. But once you take Seger for what he's worth, judge him by his era, his contemporaries and what it is exactly he does best, it's hard to find any future or previous CDs by him that measure up to this one. Of course, there's also the immeasurable "nostalgia" that many have for this CD, not to mention the buiit in nostalgia Seger puts into most of his music and storytelling. I think it will stand the test of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Against The Wind is a welcome sound for the Eighties
Having been a Bob Seger fan since the early seventies this album is in true form.Acompany Me has been my favorite, even more so then Old time Rock and Roll.Maybe I can still see Tom Cruise dancing on the couch in his underwear or maybe I just got tired of it.Anyway with songs like Against the Wind and Fire Lake are great. The one song that in my opinion is weak is Horizontal Bop. The first time I played this album I thought oh no the whole album is going to be like this......Nah.Whats nice now a days i can skip this track ......26 years later i'm still skipping.OVERALL: This is a great album its just Horizontal Bop is out of place. ... This is an excellent cd for any Seger fan, avid or not - good old fashioned R&R! Amazon service was quick, fast and hassle free.

I was delighted that it was released again. It has always been one
5-0 out of 5 stars Second Time Around (On CD)
This is a great album as all the reviewers have already said. There is not much I can add to what they have said, except that no one seems to remember that this CD and 3 others have been released before. They are Mongrel, Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, Seven, and Smokin' O.P's. They were out in '92 or '93. They went out of print pretty fast. I have these and the new version of S.O.P.'s. It definetly sounds better with the new remastering. "Back in '72" was listed in Ice Magazine for release on 8-16-05 but it didn't happen. Must have been pushed back. That album has never been released on CD, so it will be a welcome addition to my collection. Hopefully, the powers-that-be will see fit to re-release the others with the new remastered sound which is superior to the first go rounds. Also, I vaguely remember seeing "Noah" on vinyl years ago, but I don't recall much about it. I was really looking forward to the "Back in '72" CD. I found a good copy of it on vinyl a few months ago and transferred it to my computer which sounds o.k. My favorite is "Rosalie" which Thin Lizzy covered much to the original way Bob did it.....Heavy Music, Indeed!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

As the Beatles' perpetual dark horse, Harrison rarely got the chance to write and sing more than one or two songs per album. But once the band split up, the former "quiet one" was quick out of the gate with a series of memorable hit singles that seamlessly merged his budding spirituality and an epic, Phil Spector-inspired pop sensibility. This collection, originally released in 1976, combines seven of Harrison's best-known Beatles numbers, including "Something," "If I Needed Someone," "Here Comes the Sun," and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with a half-dozen early solo hits including "My Sweet Lord," "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)," "You," and "What Is Life." As such, it's a good entry-level Harrison primer. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars mostly beatle songs he didnt write
sad but true.this album has 7 beatle songs on it,only a few of which he actualy wrote and 4 of his own stuff.starting off theres "something" from abbey road.he wrote that song and hit #1.pretty good for a guy who only wrotea handful of beatle songs.it was written for patti harruson his then wife.when the beatles disbanded that parasite got with eric clapton who wrote 2 more hits for her "wonderful tonight" and "layla".anyhow, then theres some filler then another classic from abbey road called "here comes the sun ".more filler, then "for you blue".i always liked that one even though it wasnt as pop as the others.the last beatle song is from "the white album"."while my guitar gently weeps".its beautiful.now right there, youve already got your moneys worth but he threw in a few of his own songs so itd be a best of george and not georges favorite beatle songs.so heres his tunes........"my sweet lord" dedicated to lord krsna.actualy some of the words he sings repetively is the krsna chant only in english.its a very pretty song.then he does a save the earth song with "give me love, give me peace on earth".it also is very inspiring.i forget "you".than theres a save the starvingpeople song called "bangla desh".its ok but its a reminder of how awful life can be so i usualy skip that one."darkhorse" is pretty self explanatory and lastly theres "what is life?".anothertrancendental type song.i think of the 4 beatles solo greatest hits albums,id rank this one 3rd.but hes still a beatle so 3rd still ranks in the spectacular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful album needs remastering!!
"The Best of george Harrison" is a wonderful compilation of his best Beatles and post-Beatles hits and songs, but I find myself agreeing with other reviewers on the choice of Beatle songs."If I Needed Someone" and "Think For Yourself" could have been replaced with "All Things Must Pass" and "Isn't It A Pity" which deserves to be here even more since the "My Sweet Lord" 45 was a double sided hit with that track. This would have also tipped the scale more toward George's solo sides, to make a more even handed comp. Also, this CD has been out forever, it not only needs to be recompiled, but REMASTERED!!It pales beside the remasters of the original albums. But if you cannot buy the individual albums, "The Best Of George Harrison" is a decent pick for someone wanting to check out his music for the first time.

4-0 out of 5 stars There's no other!!!
There's no other George Harrison or even close. His music lives on. And he lives on in my heart. Buy this and everything else by the Beatles. For me I'd rather buy this stuff twice than the new artist clones that flood the market today.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is only the "best" since 1989
As a long-time lover of Bonnie Raitt, I have no complaints about this "best" package, except a note to those Bonnie "newbies".This collection is a good sampling of her work since she switched to Capital Records in 1989 (although "Come to Me" is a glaring omission). But there is a TON of more great music PRE-1989.Try the "Bonnie Raitt Collection", which is all pre-1989, or try some of the orignal CD's, such as "Sweet Forgiveness".
5-0 out of 5 stars Bonnie Raitt Rocks, Really!
Bonnie Raitt has done it again, proving she is not only a timeless classic, but a fresh look into blues and rock.Without straying far from her roots, she has come up with yet another brilliant CD in a world filled with copycats.A must have for any library, Bonnie is for the young and young at heart!

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best of Bonnie Raitt

5-0 out of 5 stars the man and his music
i hate to call myself a "fan" for fear of being considered a blind follower of sorts; having said that, i have been a J.B. FAN (large font, bold and underlined) since i first heard "These Days" back in "the daze."
3-0 out of 5 stars I NEED Volume !! Out NOW!
Volume 1 is GREAT! But I'm an "I want it NOW" kind of guy, I really need to have Vol 2..3..4...released ASAP. There are so many other old songs that I would LOVE to here Jackson sing, "unwired". (and play). Perhaps, "The Only Child, or my FAVORITE, "Sleep's Dark & Silent Gate" on the next volume (if there is one) LIVE, would blow me away. I have been lstening to Jackson since I was 14 years old, (much older now) In good times, but truly more in bad times. He helped me focus on what was "real" in my life. The Live CD is so much more personable to hear a normal Jackson Browne LP. JB. DO IT! WHEN IS VOLUME 2 COMING??? Please! (and thank-you).Just remember Jackson, OLDER songs, please) : )

5-0 out of 5 stars A master songwriter unplugged
I've always admired Jackson Browne as a songwriter and singer, but at the same time figured he was probably just a midlevel guitarist and pianist. Boy, was I wrong! On this album he demonstrates a mastery of open tunings, detunings and piano playing that is every bit as original as his compositions. I can't wait for Vol 2...and 3...and 4.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I just got the CD delivered this morning.I am listening to it right now and I am totally impressed.I originally bought it for the #2 cut "Tryin' to Live My Life Without You" thinking the rest of it will be just OK.WRONG.I can't get over how great the whole CD turned out to be.It comes highly recommended by this listener. Rock 'n Roll is alive and well on this CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tonight's Still Right for NINE TONIGHT
I've seen Bob Seger in concert several times in the 1980s and I was always blown away by how close the band sounded to their studio albums. The first time I saw them (at the Toledo Speedway Jam in '83), I was sure they were lipsynching for the first couple of songs (they started with "Even Now" from his latest at the time, THE DISTANCE).

5-0 out of 5 stars not my favorite...but its still good!
I always underrated this album because it wasnt very "silver-bullet" like. Probably because this is before the silver bullet band! Here are the tracks from the album and each one is better than what people say.
4-0 out of 5 stars On the verge of greatness.
This was the last album for Bob Seger, before he hit it big. At this point in his career, Seger was devloping his skills as a songwriter. There are some great songs on this album, but some weak moments as well. Lines like "I used to go out evenings, I used to stay out late some evenings" (Momma) show a that a bit of work was needed before Seger could reach the top of his game. On the other hand there are lines like "He wants his home and security, he wants to live like a sailor at sea" (Beautiful Loser) which are great. There are some good rock tracks on the album such as Katmandu and a cover of Nutbush City Limits. These along with the title track, and Travelin' Man, are the best songs on the album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Music for A Great Price!
I saw this the other day in Wal*Mart for only $5.00! Since I am a Bob Seger fan, heck, I bought it! I am in the process of collecting of albums released by him. Besides that, if you are a true classic rock fan, go get this cd. I think you can spare $5.00, right? ... Read more
