I saw the Subdudes live at the Balloon Fest in VT this June and they were so awesome, I had to buy their CDs I didn't own yet. This one, as well as their new one (Behind the Levee) is really good.Highly recommend seeing them live.Very fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional, Beautiful, and Fun Album...Great Music
I have been spreading the word about this fabulous album, and have been remiss in not posting my accolades here sooner. Louis Armstrong once said in an interview with Edward R. Murrow, something to the following effect: "Eddie, there are two types of music in the world. Good music and Bad music. Good music will make you tap your toe." This album is a toe-tapper. And a soul-tapper. And a whole-body-tapper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paris, Texas (the movie)
Who doesn't like Ry Cooder. His music is just so individual, like nothing else. (Good to listen to when you're spaced out). Or just listening to the soothing relaxing southern twang of his guitar just sends you to another plane. What I see when I hear this music is the wide open spaces and desserted highways on a hot hot summer's day somewhere in the middle of Texas. It just wants to make you chill out! It's so cool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Elemental and essential.
There are two types of soundtracks, and this is the more significant kind. The first type gives you a selection of tracks in no way related but for the taste and selection of a movie maker. I prefer my own compilations usually, but there are some good ones, usually from films no one really saw like Sleep With the Fishes. The other kind are inspired by images and landscapes no longer seen, but felt in the songs that came from them. They open the same spaces within the listener, but these are no longer owned by the movie maker, actors and their characters; some story in a film. It's not about the film at all anymore. It's music that doesn't demand you attention in the three-or-so minute grab of a regular song. This is music that you put in the background as you look to open your soul and create something yourself. And it's only found in this second type of soundtrack. There's the whole genre of New Age music which tries to do the same thing, though rarely achieves it with such deft subtlety. If you liked this one, listen to Monster's Ball, though skip the first five songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars In my top 5
Paris Texas and Wings of Desire - 2 of my favorite movies.I LOVE them.Beyond Wenders theme of love (in my mind)....is space.Space to think. And the music reflects this beautifully. It is short - I simply play it over and over!!And the dialogue is the point.....haunting, honest and just beautiful. How Travis knows just what the right thing to do is is nothing short of a miracle to me.His love is pure.Yes we all made lots of mistakes in our youth. He learned. Can't wait to see Wenders other movies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Back where he belongs!
It's taken him 26 years to produce a new album but it really is worth the wait! Always too good to be a side-man in my opinion, he has worked along side the likes of Eric Clapton, George Harrision & Roger Waters playing guitar but his marvellous distinctive voice has gone unheard for too long. This album is a breath of fresh air for those who like me are rather depressed at the lack of real music out there, Every track is strong and you can tell that he has worked very hard on producing such great lyrics. It's musically sweet alright and deserves to sell by the truck load. So buy it and buy your next door neighour a copy too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr Wonderful
This is the record his fans have been waiting for, and it's every bit as good as we dared hope, a more than worthy successor to the four greats from the 70s - Spider Jiving, La Booga Rooga, Be Bop 'n' Holla and Mega Shebang. His songwriting is as strong as ever with a range of styles that shows a deep, deep knowledge of popular music of the last 50 years or more; that wonderful expressive voice is intact, with phrasing if anything even better than before; and his guitar playing - who knew? - is amazing (see him in action on the Roger Waters and Clapton Unplugged DVDs). A triumphant return. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Los Lobos Hits the Mark Alone and with Great Guest
Excellent CD by the band featuring great songs and music that matches some of their best. Included are writing and singing collaborations by great artists like Mavis Staples, Elvis Costello, Tom Waites, Bobby Womack, Willie G., Richard Thompson, Ruben Blades, Martha Gonzalez and Cafe Tucuba. Elvis Costello sounds so rich in blusey in the appropriate "Matter of Time" he ought to give Perry Como a rest and hang with Los Lobos. My favorite is the poignant "Somewhere in Time" with the deep baritone voice of Dave Alvin alternating with David Hildago's crystal clear high tenor voice. It works extraordinary well and the lyrics are both haunting while gleaming with hope as indicated in the same below:
5-0 out of 5 stars This C.D. is one of my " all time favorites"
This might be one of "Los Lobos" BEST C.D.'s. The song, "Somewhere In Time", is an incredible musical arrangement and the vocals are "supreme". I highly recommend this C.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the most uniquely original bands....ever!
I must confess that I've been having one hell of a time trying to figure out which cd by these guys I should review.I own them all, and I find them all wonderful.I might be enjoying a distinct advantage over most people who don't own everything by Los Lobos, and I realize I'm also a bit biased because I love their material so much.To truly appreciate what these five guys do, have done, and are capable of, you'd simply have to be familiar with the band's entire catalog.Nobody is this diverse, and I'll stick my neck out here and make a brazenly heartfelt statement for the record.....Los Lobos is the most talented and engaging band in America.

Editorial Review

The passing of folk-music pillar Woody Guthrie was fresh on the minds of the participants in the first of the two concerts that make up this live tribute recording. Guthrie had died of Huntington's disease in the fall of 1967; the following January, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, and several other Woody apostles gathered to perform the folk legend's songs at Carnegie Hall. In September of 1970, a second gathering convened in the Hollywood Bowl, this one headlined by Joan Baez, Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, and others. Originally released separately on two records, this CD brings both concert recordings together on one brimming CD. Highlights include Dylan and the Band's rowdy reinterpretations of "I Ain't Got No Home," "Dear Mrs. Roosevelt," and "The Grand Coulee Damn" as well as Jack Elliott's "1913 Massacre," Odetta's "Ramblin' Round," and Tom Paxton's "Pastures of Plenty." Readings by actors Will Geer, Robert Ryan, and Peter Fonda from Guthrie's prose link the two concerts into a cohesive whole that Guthrie aficionados will find irresistible. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SOME ARTISTS INFLUENCE BY WOODY DO WELL
WITH THE POSSIBLE EXCEPTION OF A LITTLE TOO MUCH BOB DYLAN THIS IS A FINE TRIBUTE FROM PEOPLE WHO WERE INFLUENCED BY GUTHRIE'S STYLE...INCLUDING ARLO. FINE TOPIC RANGE OF HIS WRITING

5-0 out of 5 stars Proper tribute to a legend
As a Woody fan for many years,I've had this recording in every possible form and still love it.Aside from marking Dylan's first performance since his accident in '67, the rest of the line-up is filled with people who belong there. Many tributes have performers who have no reason (other than internal politics)to be included. These performances show people who knew and loved Woody and his songs. Not important but the previous reviewer states that the excluded songs were not written by Woody but by the performers. That is most certainly WRONG."Vigilante Man" by Richie Havens,"So Long (It's Been Good To Know Yuh)" by Judy Collins and "Why Oh Why" by Odetta are all written by Woody obviously. This comes from the original album. The truth shall set you free.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite a complete trbute
As much as I love both albums, which I have treasured for a long time, this collection is sadly missing two songs. The version of Vigilante Man by Richie Havens is a great omission considering it is probably the only version available. The other song by Odetta would had made this collection truly complete.

Ry broke into the digital technology early in the game, a pioneer.Interestingly, Ry was also one of the first out of the gate to digitalize his early releases, and we're fortunate for it.This release was pivital in 1972, and just as ground breaking in the CD format.Ry cataloged a variety of styles here, renditions of folk songs, delta, progressive blues... all with the originality and sparkle of Ry Cooder's slide guitar style.Profoundly original.

I have been a long time fan of Ry Cooder's music.Boomers' Story hasalways been dear to my heart.Ry's version of Maria Elena is the sweetestI've heard, gives me goosebumps! Each song on this cd (album in my day!!)is first rate.Good morning Mr. Railroad Man indeed!!!Seems to me thatthere is a celebration of a great many important human emotions expressedin this music, and I think I am fortunate to have shared in it all.I sawRy Cooder in a few small venue performances in the 70's and came away withan enlightened feeling that has stayed with me through the years. This isreal art, folks.

Brian Setzer has been infatuated with '50s fashions ever since he launched the Long Island, New York, rockabilly trio the Stray Cats in the early '80s. Now, however, his '50s fanaticism has taken an unexpected left turn into the big-band pop-jazz of Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. Read more

I agree with most of the reviewers. I have seen the BLASTERS in Belgium as the opening acts of ZZ TOP and The KINKS in 1983. The BLASTERS out performed these "polished acts". I was completly impress with the roots blues sound. I found an LP with " One red rose" in a little city of Mons, Belgium. I have played that LP until it is almost non-playable. I want to thank who ever put these tracks on CD. None of the live sound was lost in the translation into CD. I tend to get defensive on reviews. One person did not like this album and it still bothered me. Why? Because I've never bought a disc like this; I've never gotten so much "use" out of a two CD set; I've never been so moved by the songs on disc 2 or jazzed off of the Richie Valens/Jungle Books rock on disc 1; never fought my mom for possesion of a cd :); never cruised down downtown podunk Ohio or latino Washington DC listening to LA-Mexi Bar Mitzvah / Mariachi music on disc 1.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, but......
My knowledge about Los Lobos was pretty limited when I bought this.I like the CD but I don't find the R&B, rockin' tunes as compelling as the Mexican music. Those tracks are why I give this compilation 4 stars.

if you have never heard this band, you should be pitied, because you don't know what you are missing. One of the best bands to ever grace the contemporary rock scene in the past couple of decades, The Wolves make music that is oriented to blues, electric guitar rock, country, gospel, and many other musical styles mixed together in a way that is truly their own.The band are truly musicians musicians, and should be listened to by everyone because their albums show a lot of consistency over the years, with many high points.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rocks today just like it did in the 90's
I grew up on this disc. There are albums out there that when you listen to them they take you back. This is it for me.Virtually the whole album is significant. The Innocent and Fly Me Courageous are just about as good as it gets.If you have never heard Drivin' n Cryin', do yourself a favor and at least listen.Great stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Mainstream" Rock from dnc
dnc's label, Island, pushed Kevn Kinney, et al toward mainstream hard rock with this release, hoping to get a band that would both rock and possess universal appeal through superior, socially-conscioussongwriting (like Midnight Oil or late-80s rem). The result is the band's best-selling record, _Fly Me Courageous_.The increased contribution of hard rock guitarist Buren Fowler and the paring down of the softer side of dnc's personality led to a solid rock record which featured memorable, melodic riffsand rock radio tunes such as the title song, "Build a Fire," and "The Innocent."The country-fied "For You" balances the bombast, as does the Petty-esque "Let's Go Dancing," but mostly the band goes for the "Rockin' in the Free World" approach.Producer Geoff Workman (whose credits include Motley Crue) adds considerable polish to the band's sound, but while it almost put them over the top, the record is not quite as unique as their previous two efforts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jane's Addiction makes it all worth while...
All the songs are well done.Midnight Oil does a unique and impressive version of "Wharf Rat," but it is Jane's Addiction's cover of "Ripple" that stands alone as the one song on the album that actually surpasses the original Dead song as well as surpassing all the other songs on the album in quality."Ripple" rocks. If anything, all Jane's Addiction fans (and maybe Midnight Oil fans) should own this album.Thank you, boys!

I guess everyone has diff. likes & dislikes, but I appreciate this album b/c it introduced me to Lyle Lovett through his tremendous cover of "Friend of the Devil", and the Cowboy Junkies, which at first I couldn't stand, then couldn't get out of my head, now love.Without waxing too poetic, I think of all the covers, the CJ's offered a poignant version of the Dead classic.Anyway, this CD offers something for everyone- I highly recommend it for a lifetime of listening. ... Popular but not hip, basic but not shallow, rooted but not retro, Creedence Clearwater Revival distinguished themselves in the late 1960s and early 1970s through these contradictions. This six-disc set is the definitive Creedence collection, offering superbly remastered versions of all of their studio and live albums and adding a disc's worth of pre-Creedence material. The ultimate blue-collar rock band, John Fogerty and CCR found success by wholly giving in to their fascination with the American South (despite hailing from Northern California) and exploring the turf that connected R&B and country--the same turf that their heroes at Sun studios tilled at rock's birth. As the songs on the first disc prove, they hadn't always taken this approach though perhaps they should have: The first four songs from 1961 (by Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets), original compositions in the classic '50s rock & roll style they loved, hold up better than subsequent Golliwogs tracks that attempt to replicate the British Invasion sound in vogue at the time. Still, the Golliwogs tracks offer hints of John Fogerty's menacing growl and biting guitar that would fully blossom later on. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome collection
I didn't buy this collection but got it free at piratebay.org by downloading the torrent there, and all 6 CDs ripped in 256 kpbs MP3. Some generous fellow is sharing it there. Just search "clearwater revival box set" on the main page.
5-0 out of 5 stars The most quintessential and definitive box set of the best short lived band
The Creedence Clearwater Revival box set is very much a mammoth enterprise in its own right. Containing all seven original albums and two live albums, not to mention a whole disc full of material from their stints as Tommy Fogerty & The Blue Velvets and The Golliwogs, this is very much a unique offer.
3-0 out of 5 stars Love the completeness but disappointed in sound quality.
It's great to have all the CCR studio albums, and some of the more obscure stuff all in one package.

Editorial Review

Like the titular automobile, guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Sue Foley is dependable, road-tested, and economical. Through sheer tenacity, the Canadian has become an experienced and respected veteran in the limited but fertile genre of female blues-guitar-slinging bandleaders. On her tenth album, Foley finds a cruising lane between her tougher early work and a slicker, more R&B-influenced sound. She sticks to her blues background while shifting gears to a moderately more commercially oriented soulful approach that should appeal to old fans and create some new ones. With an instantly recognizable voice that can be sweet one moment and biting the next, Foley shows that being fashionable and rootsy aren't mutually exclusive. She's as comfortable with a Stonesy "Beast of Burden"-styled ballad such as "Do It Again" as digging her wheels into the album's high-drama, torchy showpiece "Absolution." While not all of the material--eleven of these tracks are written or co-penned by Foley--is up to those standards, her malleable voice, tough yet tender spirit, and subtle but sure guitar find the guts in even the less stellar tunes. The evocative front cover shows a glamorous Foley staring down the listener with an expression of steely resolve. It's a similar mixture of grace and danger that fuels this album, where she hugs the curves of the blues while careening around the corners of rock and soul. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Where is that John Fogerty Sound?
John Fogerty trys to sound like everybody else on this album with mixed results. Only when he falls back upon the sound we love for then does he shine.
4-0 out of 5 stars Other stuff to check out
I am a huge fan of John Fogerty's solo music and his music with CCR. If you enjoy his roots-rock style then I strongly recommend that you check out the following:

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, but what else is new?
Wow...The 'Dudes' are an incredible band.I was turned on to them by someone on the 'net who recommended them. This was the 1st album I purchased, and since then, I've got 'em all.A group of white boys from Denver, CO. doing N'Awlins good time music, and doing it amazingly well.If you like good, funky boogie music with great vocals and harmonies and wonderful musicianship, you can't go wrong.Buy this one, and I pretty much guarantee you'll want all of their albums.Grab this (or any 'Dudes album), and you are in for a real treat.Unique and incredible, I just wish this review site had a way to go to "11"!

5-0 out of 5 stars His Finest Hour
Maybe 1985's 'Scarecrow' was the album that elevated John Mellencamp to superstar status in the US but 'The Lonesome Jubilee'still remains musically, his boldest album. The album features nine musicians and himself, playing no less than 23 different instruments including dobro, banjo, congas, hammer dulcimer, fiddle and penny whistle. The result is a strong, rich, textured, stylish album which gets stronger with every listen. The main themes throughout 'The Lonesome Jubilee' are the hopes and aspirations of working class, blue collar Americans, particularly in the mid-west where Mellencamp was born and lives. The album begins with the uptempo 'Paper In Fire' telling us that we should chase and hold on to our dreams before thy go up in smoke like paper in fire.'Down And Out In Paradise' is about the struggle of everyday life .The first single taken from the album 'Check It Out' is about the disillusionment of being a family man, 'Going to work on Monday, you got yourself a family, all the utility bills have been paid, you can't tell your best buddy that you love him' he goes on to hope that the future generations that ride on the highways that we build have a better understanding.'Cherry Bomb' is an innocent, nostalgic tale of growing up and being in love when 'holding hands meant something'.'We Are The People' is about hope and optimism in a cold world as Mellencamp sings 'if you're feeling shut down may my thoughts be with you,if you're a black man being being shoved down and kicked all around then my thoughts are with you'.'Hard Times For An Honest Man' is exactly about what the title states whereas 'Hotdogs And Hamburgers' is a tale of injustice and forgiveness where the author feels ashamed of 'how the west was really won'.'The Lonesome Jubilee' is basically a series of short realistic tales about life, love, hardship, hope and survival. It is at times melancholic but overall it is a deep, warm, folk rock record which in my opinion John Mellencamp has never bettered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mellencamp is Mellencamp.
The Lonesome Jubilee remastered edition is a great album made even better! If you have the original release of this cd I highly recomend that you buy this one, as well. Even if you are just a casual John Mellencamp fan you will love it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Remastering Emphasizes The Folksy Instrumentation And Lyrical Messages
The remastering of THE LONESOME JUBILEE simply adds depth and definition to the folksy instrumentation and cautionary, almost Biblical, admonitions contained on this CD. There are also bonus cuts added as well to increase your listening pleasure. The album's lyrics about appreciating and holding on to what you have have inspired me to look at pictures of pretty actresses as a deterrent to self-indulgent behavior. The fact that Mellencamp feels that the young Australian tourist convicted in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges is innocent only adds weight to the multi-layered lyrical messages of such songs as "Paper In Fire", "Down And Out In Paradise", "Check It Out", "We Are The People", "Hard Times For An Honest Man", and many others. This album is a must for any serious Mellencamp fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essencial rock n'roll
magnificent piece of rock n'roll from 81, a year full of new wave synth crap (not all but, yeah you get the point). This is blues-rock-psychobilly drawn into deep american roots mixed with punk-new wave feel, just like Cramps were doing at the time but in my opinion, Guyn Club gone a bit further. Sometimes when you listen to them you can picture White Stripes, sometimes Jo Spencer Blues Explosion. In 81! Totally ahead of their time. A must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gonna buy me a graveyard...
Simply put, this is one of the best albums ever, and save for THE CLASH's LONDON CALLING, I think THE GUN CLUB's FIRE OF LOVE just might be the best rock album ever, hands down, no contest. As a matter of fact, SEX BEAT just might be the best rock-n-roll song ever recorded, summing up the raw, ragged, sexy, unholy power of rock past, present, & future in under three minutes - but isn't that how the best of rock should be? I mistrust the current Jeffrey Lee Pierce idol worship circa 2006 - all I know is, I got this LP when it first came out on Slash in the early 80s as a teen and haven't stopped playing it since - it's almost three decades old and still puts most everything else in its path to shame. JLP and THE GUN CLUB never quite managed to scale these heights ever again (even if parts of MIAMI and LAS VEGAS are nice) - if you don't own this, you don't know good music, period.

5-0 out of 5 stars sick album that does damage
The Gun Club is an awesome punk band that everyone should know about. Sex Beat, She's Like Heroine to Me, and For the Love of Ivy are my favorites. The songs on this album rock and are really fun to listen to. In the words of the informercials "Get your credit card now" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When I was just a little boy ...
When I was just a little boy ... I smashed a bookcase with a broomstick playing "Born On The Bayou" on the air guitar. And still, 35 years later, I still get very excited when hearing the intro of that song. "Born On The Bayou" is by far the best song on this album (much better than "Proud Mary" for instance), any album with this song on it deserves 5 stars. "Bootleg", "Graveyard Train" and "Keep On Chooglin'" are too long and a bit boring, the other songs are of solid Creedence Quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars check this out too
