3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete, narrowly-focusedcollection of '70s power pop
Any kind of "genre" collection is bound to disappoint, as this one does. But on the plus side, the single version of Big Star's "In the Street" is worth the price of this CD alone, it being a looser take than the LP version. It's great to have both Phil Seymour's and The Dwight Twilley Band's (featuring Phil Seymour) hits on the same CD. "It's Too Late" by The Searchers is an inspired choice, but many of the songs here lack enough appeal to want to hear them more than once. And then there's "What I Like About You" by The Romantics, which is overly familiar from way too many plays through the '80s to the present. For a power pop collection to really be comprehensive,

4-0 out of 5 stars As fast and snarling as a hot rod!
* * FYI - The title of this album is TEENAGE DEPRESSION, NOT 'Life On The Line' as indicated in the above Amazon heading...If you like the Undertones and the Buzzcocks, you'll love this - Blazing rock'n'roll recorded live at the Marquee and in the studio 1976. I played my orginal vinyl LP to death, so it's great to finally have this on CD. The LP had 12 tracks; This has those plus 11 extras. Brits Eddie & The Hotrods- Barrie Masters (vocals), Dave Higgs (guitar), Steve Nicol (drums), Paul Gray (bass) played pre-Punk R&R with a hint of Pub Rock and more than a nod and a wink to '60s garage bands, plus sped-up covers of ? and The Mysterians ("96 Tears"), The Who ("The Kids Are Alright"), Van Morrison/Stones ("Gloria/Satisfaction" - yes,it works!), but the real surprise is a driving version of Bob Seger's "Get Out of Denver". Their original numbers are not too shabby either; "Get Across To You" should/could have been a hit single. 8-page booklet is informative. No frills rock'n'roll!

5-0 out of 5 stars British Pub Rock, fast and loud!
Eddie and the Hot Rods were a pub rock band. But their style of classic old school rock made them popular amongst punk bands such as The Damned. They even toured with each other during the early days of the U.K. punk movement. One of the members of the Hot Rods (teenage bassist Paul Gray) would later join the Damned!
4-0 out of 5 stars First rate early punk rock
The Hotrods were an early UK punk group, high energy, but essentially a revved up mid-sixties sound. They were not a revival group, nor were they a full blown "punk" group ala The Damned or The Ramones. It's difficult to explain, but this is a great record, including early 45's, first LP, and several later singles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but not classic
When Joey Molland and Tom Evans reunited to record "Airwaves," they weren't going to be Badfinger, but their label insisted on the name recognition factor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Badfinger........Say No More
An ironic title to this last release by Tom and Joey together. This time they did what they liked to do, pull out all the stops. This was strickly high energy with the most outrageous lead guitar ever on a Badfinger release, provided by Glenn Sherba. Fantastic keyboards were also added by Tony Kaye and the great songwriting of Tom and Joey continued. If "Airwaves" didnt convince youthat Tom and Joey were back, "Say No More" should have. "Say No More" was an excellent final release that didnt get the attention it truly deserved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Undeservingly Ignored
With Joe Tansin no longer gumming up the works, Evans/Molland managed to put together a pretty good album. While Airwaves sounded to cater to radio listeners, Say No More is pure rock. That's not to mean that this is a hard-rocking album--Badfinger sounds overall as poppy as ever on this one. However, there is nary a ballad to be found here (though a couple of the lighter songs come close) and the production barely sounds "80's" on most of the tracks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What's in a Name?
I grew up in Winston-Salem, so Let's Active were hometown heroes of mine. From what I've heard, and choose to believe, the name Let's Active comes from a mis-translation of "Let's Get Physical," seen (presumably by a member of the band) on a Japanese t-shirt written "Let's Active."So the band name, like the music it produced, is genius. This was their swan song and is probably their most "rock" album."Big Plans. .." should have been their first commercial success and this should have been their "sell-out" follow-up.And maybe in some alternate (better) universe, it was.If you want to learn where a whole bunch of today's hip bands were weened, check out Let's Active. It may take a few listens to get into Mitch Easter's unique (original) vocal stylings, but you cannot deny the rock.

5-0 out of 5 stars umm....
Let's Active is a fantastic band name. Sorry I just had to say that. I've had this album since I was in my late teens and the older I get the more I realize how much this particular song writing technique has influenced me. Mitch crafts tight cohesive arrangements that feel like an amusment park ride designed for both thrills and contemplation. Great american rock and roll.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suprising Gem
Let's Active is a stupid band name. Why anyone would name a band to insure commercial failure I don't know, but they are a decent band and this album in particular is a great listen.Every song works well and they even rock out at times. If you are looking for an undiscovered pleasure this album is highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sounding Live Album
This is the best live album from Greg Kihn.It sounds great and has a good song selection--even the raps between songs by Greg are interesting. The only problem with it is there are no notes about the recording, the dates, the musicians, or the places it was recorded. However, Greg does introduce the band and guess what? the guitar player was Joe Satriani, --no wonder the lead guitar playingwas great.I still would like to know when this set was recorded--does anybody know what yr Satriani was in Greg Kihn's band--I am guessing around 1990-1992. Get this CD--it sounds great and of course Greg's singing is great along with his rhythm guitar style. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A rose by any other name...

4-0 out of 5 stars Under-rated
This album is a lot better than most people give it credit for, this from a musicians point of view - maybe it sounds different to me because I was a fan of the band from nearly the beginning.Another step down the "heavy production path" that was taking them farther away from their roots as a straight up rock band.
4-0 out of 5 stars All the better for the additions
This album in its original format was one of CT's weakest. It's a steady, solid effort all the way though, it just didn't have enough standout tracks. Now though with the addition of Found All The Parts and Everything Works If You Let It, it now has some brains to go with the braun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap Trick - 'Music For Hangovers' (Cheap Trick Unlimited)
Should be able to obtain a copy of this gem for really low-priced almost anywhere you look.'Music...' was recorded at one of the four-night special engagement they played at Chicago's Metro in 1998 to mark the 25th anniversary release of their first album. That's what I've heard anyway.Tracks off 'Music For Hangovers' are all if not mostly off of the band's first three lp's.An old school Cheap Trick fan's dream police(er,I mean dream)come true.Sound is great, almost as if you were there yourself.Tracks that were more than a delight to relive again include "Surrender","I Can't Take It","Dream Police","The Ballad Of T.V.Violence"(haven't heard this cut in awhile now),"Gonna Raise Hell" among others.Highly recommended.A must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeds the legendary
Cheap Trick may very well be the best pop/rock band America has ever produced, and it's no mistake that the first big splash they made in terms of record sales was the phenomenal "Cheap Trick At Budokan" live album that was initially only available in the US market as a Japanese import. The high regard in which the Budokan recording is held becomes all that more impressive when considering that it was released in THE decade known for great live albums (and it holds its own with Frampton, Kiss, McCartney, et al from the same era).Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A period piece?
Recording from 1981-82, the beginning of the Reagan presidency. It's not really an indictment on our 40th president. Rather, it's a regurgitation of liberal fears of what a Reagan administration would be like: war ("Lysistrata"), the elimination of the welfare safety net ("Only Human"), corporate greed ("Last Dollar", "Love of Money", the title cut), and censorship ("Fahrenheit 451"). History reveals that Utopia were better artists than prognosticators (don't quit your "Day Job", Todd!). It's hard to argue with the tunes, however, many of which are infectious, and almost convincing (almost!). Which proves that, by definition, rock music is "feel" music, best served from the left.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stinging sarcasm and political bite to a rock'n'roll groove.
What intrigued me when I first ran into this years back was the "rock'n'roll (da Beetles, in particular) is the devils music" bonfire shot--with the album's cover superimposed as theoffendingproduct...Jiminy Crunketts, what chutzpah! Then I was afforded a listen bymy friendly neighborhood record store clerk...I liked it immediately, but Iwas never a big fan of Todd Rundren before this. "Lysistrata" isa personal favorite, 'cause that's actually what is sorta what's happenin',but no one's had the...uh...chutzpah to say it. "One MillionMonkeys" and "Shinola" are catchy skewerings of the musicindustry, but the Gamble/Huff "For the Love of Money" and"Last Dollar On Earth" are "anti-Greed is Good" anthemsif I ever heard one. Listening to this now makes one realize that thingshave not changed that much from them Reagan years, the game's the same butthe faces have changed...also, do we have anybody besides these boys andJoanie Baez to lay it on the line and tell the people the real deal?

4-0 out of 5 stars Swing to the right
I didn't realize when I was in high school how these songs would follow me in life. Brilliant; atypical Todd Rundgren. Though basically anti-establishment, some may notice some songs have been used by majorcompanies (i.e. Nissan among others) in ads of the past ten years. Asleeper in the best sense. You should have this in your CD collection. Aprecursor to bands such as BNL and Phish, Utopia's sense and sendiments canbe shared and felt by all who listen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone!
I don't usually buy soundtrack albums, unless there is a song or two not released elsewhere.I must confess the reason I bought this one is for the BEE GEES cut, "Wedding Day".But, there are great songs from Elvis to Ella Fitzgerald, and McCartney to B.J. Thomas and others in between. It is a very diverse album, with something to please everyone.I am glad I made an exception in this case.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eclectic Collection
The first song on this soundtrack, "A Love For You," was recorded by Paul McCartney and Wings for Ram, but not included on that album. It's hard to believe this song has remained unreleased until now. It's a spirited rocker with a very catchy melody, and could easily have been a hit song. The previously unreleased version of "Live And Let Die" included on this album has more of a demo feel to it than the regular version."I'm Carrying" is also not a new McCartney song, but is a pleasant album track from the London Town album. You haven't lived until you've heard Ella Fitzgerald's version of the Cream song "Sunshine Of Your Love," with the brass section playing the guitar parts! The real find on this album is "More Than A Friend" by the group All Too Much.It was recorded in 2003 but it sounds like a psychedelic pop song from the sixties.Stylistically, this album is a mixed bag.You have to love a collection that includes both Elvis Presely and Yma Sumac, a woman with a five octave vocal range!Ray Charles has said that there are only two kinds of music; good and bad.No matter what type of song is included, this soundtrack contains all good music. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Emo tion is dead.Sad but true
I love this album so much.TJT you started everything in 98 for me.I loved "August in Bethany" off "Understand This Is Not A Dream" so I bought this album.I was the only one in Lowell listening to EMO.Now "Emo is dead" I blame warped tour. All these new Emo/Screamo bands suck that's why I'm going back to where I started, with this album.I don't like emo now, but this one's a keeper.I started a band because of this album, remembered the words to every single track and pretty much introduced emo to fellow Lowellians. This is the album I'd take if I was stranded on a desert island.Key tracks; If I told you this was killing me would you stop,Into the dark,Don't push love away, Were at the top of the world, You always say goodnight, goodnight, This is your life, and Emotion is dead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your ears will thank you.
I try to keep an open mind about all genres of music.Often times it seems like all emo rock sounds the same, but this album is on the verge of creating its own. The songs are interesting and unique. It becomes very clear early on that the makers of this album are NOT the airheads from your french class who made a band and fluked something special. These cowboys are intelligent.Actually, real cowboys don't exist anymore, except eh. lost my train of thought (damn you weed DAMN YOU)If nothing else, the lyrics will keep you transfixed. So buy the album.. and if you don't like it, give it to your uncle or something.

4-0 out of 5 stars title of review
It's true that these guys take themselves a bit too seriously for the kind of music they play, and the songs on this album belong more on commercial radio than in the indie scene, but if you can get past that you can appreciate this album for what it is. It's either above or beneath all the emo garbage it's associated with, depending on your perspective. If you're hung up on underground cred, you'll consider it beneath, if you're a genuine unpretentious music lover you will have no trouble accepting the melodic pop brilliance this album has to offer. Tracks 1, 3, 4, 5, and 11 are nothing less than amazing. They're the absolute pinnacle of contemporary pop-rock songwriting. If I hadn't heard them with my own ears I'd think it was impossible to write songs this good. Something Isn't Right Here is a cringeworthy boy-band type song that I really can't stand, and there are a couple other weak songs, but overall this is still a must-own album for anyone who enjoys catchy pop music to any extent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artist for the New Millenium
Joan Armatrading is without a doubt one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the Twentieth Century. Her soulful lyrics combined with catchy tunes have been a mainstay on the edge of popular music since the early 1970s.THE BEST OF JOAN ARMATRADING: THE MILLENIUM COLLECTION is her third US greatest hits collection, following TRACK RECORD and GREATEST HITS.The CD contains her near-hits such as "Drop the Pilot" and songs featured on recent movie soundtracks, such as "Willow" from BOYS ON THE SIDE and "The Weakness in Me" from TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU.It's hard to create a greatest hits collection from someone whose career has spanned nearly thirty years. There are a number of songs I wish had been included such as "Moves" from SECRET SECRETS and "Dark Truths" from THE SHOUTING STAGE (both of which are now out of print), but I am not complaining.I'm just anxiously waiting for a collection of new material.Joan is truly an amazing artist, and this collection contains some of her best. There is also an English import with more selections. ... Zumpano are a band that never really got the attention they deserved.I remember seeing them live with only 5 or 6 others in attendance. At least Carl's got the New Pornographer's thing going now. If you like pure power pop, Marshall is your man and this is a CD you need to have in your collection. All of the songs are gems, but "Calling Out For Love (At Crying Time)" is my favorite. The guitars swoop and soar in and out of the vocal track throughout this song, and they come together in the middle in a mad, almost hysterical rush (you can even hear shouting in the background at this point).Marshall's voice is full of anguish and longing--a trademark sound I never grow tired of hearing.

Still one of my all time favorite pop/rock albums. Each song composed with an enormous hook with bridges that explode.I would believe this album to be a diamond in the rough.

I was turned on to these guys when a friend told me the lead singer sounded like Andy Sturmer from Jellyfish, so I had to check it out. Although he is pretty much a dead ringer vocally, the Tories have a great little album here. They go more for straight-forward rock/pop songs, but every cut on here is solid. 4-0 out of 5 stars Why the concensus to diss National Emotion?
Despite the concensus opinion in most reviews to disparage Tommy Tutone's third album "National Emotion" I maintain that it was a stellar effort and should have been for Tommy Tutone what "Rumours" was for Fleetwood Mac.I am obviously the odd man out on this opinion, but happily so. Can we please have National Emotion go digital?!

4-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of Good Stuff Here
Tommy Tutone enjoyed a short heyday during the peak of New Wave in the early 1980s. The first two Tutone albums contained an array of power pop--music with hooks and an edge. There are at least five or six great tunes on this CD. Jenny (867-5309 is their best-known song and may also be their best. But songs like Baby It's Alight, Angel Say No, Cheap Date and Which Man are You, among others, are worth a serious listen. If you're into the music of the New Wave period, definitely check this CD out.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Hit Wonders Had Many Other Fine Songs
Tommy Tutone made three albums in the early 80s, and had one smash hit single, "867-5309/Jenny", which was from the second album, "Tommy Tutone 2". This CD re-issue combines the first 2 albums on one CD. (The 3rd album, "National Emotion", has never been issued on CD, but is a disappointment compared to the first two.) Tommy Tutone's albums were comprised of energetic power pop in the style of the hit, plus slower, more somber songs that were equally catchy but had a quality of melancholy - "Shadow On The Road Ahead", "Which Man Are You". The first album is pretty good, a 3-star effort, but it is on the 5-star second album where they really shine. The two leaders, singer Tommy Health and guitarist Jim Keller, where known during the band's brief life for not getting along well together, and after album three they finally split up. More than a decade after their heyday, Heath resurrected the band name and put out two more albums as Tommy Tutone, without Keller's involvement. I haven't heard either one. If you know and love "867-5309/Jenny" and are curious about whether the rest is worth owning, my advice is go ahead and buy this CD, there are plenty of other good songs to be found here.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wicked Awesome Nick!
Great tunes mostly from his Rockpile years.'Basher' has more for your money but doesn't include 4 excellent tracks found here: Skin Deep, Nutted By Reality, They Called It Rock, and Basing Street (not found on any of his LPs).As a sidenote, indie rocker and Nick-fan Scott McCaughey (Minus Five) released a fine version of Basing Street in 1995.5-0 out of 5 stars 16 All-Time Highes
16 All Time Lowes was released in 1984, just before Nick Lowe decided to return to American roots music with his fifth solo album, Nick Lowe & His Cowboy Outfit, and it appropriately functions as a greatest-hits collection of his new wave years. Most of the 16 tracks are culled from Jesus of Cool and Labour of Lust, with Rockpile's "When I Write the Book" and the non-LP "Basing Street" added for good measure. It's a very entertaining collection, boasting such Nick classics as "Born Fighter," "Marie Provost," "Cruel to Be Kind," "Cracking Up," "So It Goes," and "They Called It Rock." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG

5-0 out of 5 stars CLEVER POPROCK
I wonder why such a talented singer & songwriter should be so obscure? To me, he's as good as Elvis Costello. Every single one of these tracks is great. To single out just 4 of them: (I Love The Sound Of ) Breaking Glasswith its killer hook (very evocative of David Bowie's Breaking Glass on his"Low" album), the chilling tale of Mary Provost (an actress wholost it when the talkies came in and who was eaten by her doggie in a"cheap hotel up on Hollywood West" - wonder if it was achihuahua?), the hilarious So It Goes with its quirky beat and thesingalong Nutted By Reality. I recommend this album to those who loveintelligent rock-pop with clever lyrics and catchy melodies. Very much likeearly Elvis Costello. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars At last!
I first heard the Slickee Boys at the Student Union a tthe University of Md at a new students night. The only song I remember from that night is Jailbait Janet. Years later I remembered that song and re-discovered the slickee boys. I love this group, they're different in the same way the Beat Farmers are different (in fact they have a similar sound)

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is a classic!
I bought this album years ago when it first came out, and really liked it.I tried to find the CD for a while, but I think it may have been out of print. So for years I haven't listened to the songs, at first because I was too lazy to put on a record, and now because I don't even have a turntable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Might be my favorite MC album
I would agree with the other reviewers that say this album has worn very well. It may well be my very favorite, and at the very least I like it at least as well as his eponymous debut. "Whenever You're on My Mind" was the song that made me a Marshall Crenshaw fan--I still remember the video with all the daydreams in it from way back in the early 1980s. "Hold It" is a great conclusion as well. This is the era of Marshall Crenshaw's music I like best, when his catchy melodies and harmonies were peppy and absolutely infectious, as opposed to his more recent and more jazz-influenced work. Now, I'm reacting to the old LP, which I still have--I'm not really in a position to talk about how the CD sounds, but I can't believe it isn't wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scene of the crime
After his first, eponymous album, Marshall Crenshaw was on the verge of becoming a seriously major pop star. But "Field Day" ended all that.It is one of the most infuriating and unfair stories in all of rock history.Crenshaw has gone on to record 7 or 8 additional albums of original songs, but with sales and therefore budgets dwindling further each time.
