4-0 out of 5 stars solid live set
The packaging says this was recorded in 1996, and it's a pretty solid show, with songs spanning several of their albums.Definitely worth the six or seven bucks it'll cost you (i've seen them live and this was a fair approximation of what their shows are like).definitely recommended if you're a fan; i picked it up not having heard it, and i was pleasantly surprised. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a band, and what a time in Atlanta
During the time this band was popular, one could go to the Agora Ballroom in Atlanta and see a host of hot bands who were signed to major labels. Fortnox, Riggs, Swingin Richards, and so many more. The Producers were the best of the lot.Even today the question remains as to why these guys{ Producers} did not make it all the way. The vocals were unbelievable, and the musicianship was as good as it gets. I think this album is a little high, but quite frankly I don't care. I owe it to these guys for some of the best shows I have ever seen. Thanks for the memories, fellows. Buying this is the least I can do...

5-0 out of 5 stars Power Pop; polished; sublime...
Glad I got mine, 'coz look at the price of this baby. I think Van Temple and this core of rockers have been sadly underated. Every track here is tight, melodic, in-your-face rock and roll. The Producers gets most the raves, but You Make The Heat backs it up plenty. Many of the overlooked and underappreciated songs deserve mention. How can you NOT crank up "Who Do you Think You Are?", "You Go Your Way", "Sensations" and "The End"? This is awesome, rock-edged power pop, loaded with catchy riffs and skinny-tie attitude. "She Sheila" is pure powerpop brilliance, pubescently charged. "Operation", one of my favorites, showcases a bit of Van's killer guitar technique, plus thundering, heart pounding drums, all driving a storyline of heartbreak and angst. Cranked, you can't help but succumb to its emotional gush, as Van reminds us what it all feels like. "Dear John" is the reminder and the story to back it up. Superbly crafted rock songs, a perfect detachment from the hum drum corporate stuff that continually pours from the radio today. You'll be happy you gave this disc a few spins. Glad I got mine. ===MikeG===
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank GOD!!The Producers on CD!!!
Having had the honour & privilege to open for this Atlanta-based quartet on two occasions are among the highlights of my 18+ year musical career, so I'm glad to see their first two LPs have finally been transferred to digital era.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pop/Rock/Songwriting at it's finest in the 90's
I got this album a few years ago and it's probably the single most played CD I have had in the past 10 years. My I-River MP3 player has given me many hours of pleasure with this CD. So first of all let's get this straight, all the instruments, voices, noises & Lyrics (as per CD's booklet) are by Jason Falkner himself which is almost hard to believe. I would be happy to pay good money to see a band that played as well as this. Above and beyond the musicianship on display here are the wonderful lyrics present on each and every song. Fabulous Pop/Rock riffs with hooks a plenty. To my ears it's a perfect mix of American/British Pop influence's both old and new. I can hear ("XTC" - Check `Don't show me heaven', "Beatles" - Check `She Goes to Bed' with it's background orchestration "Blur" - Check `I Go Astray' as well as people like "Cheap Trick", "Beachboys", "Kinks" & even "Robyn Hitchcock" on other tracks. As many influences as this guy may have he has certainly made this Album uniquely his own through his humorous & often thought provoking lyrics and natural pop-sensibilities. Thankfully his voice is a perfect accompaniment to the songs on the album. There is a good mix of styles on display here from fast pop-induced songs which share space with slow introspective songs without either seeming out of place. Everything compliments the album as a whole and this is to date probably his best effort I feel. Released 1996 it still sounds very current, especially amongst the British Indie Scene. If you're looking for great songwriting, catchy pop riffs & a range of styles then please pick up this CD, you won't regret it. Just ignore the lame Cover.

4-0 out of 5 stars The beat(les) goes on
Jason Falkner is one of the torch carriers of the Beatlesian pop ethic crafting clever, sophisticated nuggets in the tradition of Paul Mccartney and Elvis Costello - a far cry from the back-to-basics, amps-up-to-11, trash 'n roll that is in the ascendant. Classically-trained JF left cult combo Jellyfish to go solo. Which he's done with convincing results, not least on Presents: Author Unknown which is a more grown-up, expensive-sounding affair than previous hi-octane workouts Bliss Descending EP, for instance, which has the wonderful They Put Her in the Movies. With his last few records, Jason Falkner is, one senses, trying to bring this kind of pop aesthetic to the mainstream audience (I'd rather listen to him than Bryan Adams, for example). He certainly has all the tools at his disposal to carry it off. Talent seems to ooze from his every pore. His main weak selling point is his self-effacing profile; his records lack the kind of homogeneity that all major-selling albums are expected to have. It's top-of-the-line music but doesn't scream `Choose me!' when you browse through your CDs.
5-0 out of 5 stars upending a negative first impression proves more important
You've all had it happen; you've disliked an artist or a CD and then given it another chance a little bit later and it blows your mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Many Highlights
Most compilations are dodgy affairs, and benefit/charity releases are especially guilty, but this sneak hit in the "Red Hot + ___" series of AIDS-benefit/awareness releases was easily the best of the bunch, and presents a surprisingly freethinking travelogue of the rock underground, circa '94, just as that underground was cruising into mainstream consciousness.
2-0 out of 5 stars Normally I'm open minded
Sorry, this CD just isn't the exact genre that I was thinking. Buying the wrong kind of compilation was my mistake, but with the Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, i thought maybe it was going to be a little heavier than what it was. Turned out to be the light alt-pop bands from the 90's.
4-0 out of 5 stars The kind of CD that never leaves you
No Alternative is one of those CDs that you listen to on your way to work for a month straight, finally tire of, forget for a few years, and then remember all over again, listening to it on your way to work for a month straight. The beauty of compilations and soundtracks is that, when they're done right, they're diverse enough to keep your interest far longer than an album by a single artist ever could. 5-0 out of 5 stars TFC 4EVER
I have the fortune (or misfortune) to have discovered TFC only recently. After spending weeks listening continously to tracks of all TFC albums days and nights, I conclude 13 is the best. BTW I am 55 years old and have been listneing to pop, rock etc since 1960.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing rock album in every sense!
Both rock and classic rock music fans will agree if given it a chance to work its magic on you.Teenage Fanclub, though severely never given proper credit, mastered the melodic classic rock sound on their debut album "Bandwagonesque", but this album is even more of a throwback to 70's harmonizing rock music, but with an edge that makes it fresh and alive. The Fannies are excellent musical craftsmen and serve up the kind of harmonizing vocals that even the most loyal Byrds fans have to give props to.Because of its length and quantity of great tracks, its a great listen to when on a long drive, hanging out at the park or beach, or heck just about anything. But the best thing about this album, is that you just keep on discovering new 'favorites' until the point that you just cant list a few standout tracks. Many of these songs would have been Top 40 hits if they were recorded by some of the popular rock acts of the 60's and 70's, but us Fannie fans probably don't mind.We kinda like breaking their albums out and having people go, wow who's that?

5-0 out of 5 stars A brillient music album by a band known for writing pop
Teenage Fanclub's musical ablity and emotion is showed at its best on this album. The album is nothing short of amazing. It's not quite pop though, so if you are expecting another album of similar style to their others you might be surprised. It's a far less happy and far more difficult album. The lyrics are simple but they become better with each listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars check this out too
I am a huge fan of power pop with a little twang.I strongly recommend that you check out the following:
4-0 out of 5 stars flashes of brilliance, but something is missing...
A lot of music fans have mused over why Matthew Sweet did not achieve greater success with the masses despite his obvious ability to write very catchy songs. "Sick of Myself" single-handedly rejuvenated my faith in the power of pop music at a time when pop seemed to have exhausted its possibilities. But in retrospect Sweet simply wasn't a very marketable commodity for the music industry, and on top of that his vocals and lyrics somehow didn't grab people. Its not that he doesn't sing with passion or feeling, but somehow the words seem to get lost in the mix. Perhaps its a production thing; regardless, the vocals on a MS album always seem to be secondary to the music and that is a no-no for any great singer-songwriter. There are some truly impressive (albeit derivative) stuff here: "What Matters" is in my opinion the greatest Byrds song never written, "Hide" is a beautiful piano ballad that wouldn't seem out of place on Badfinger compilation, "If Time Permits" has some of the most beautiful chorus harmonies not written by Brian Wilson, etc. etc. "I've Been Waiting" works well in combining catchy melody with plaintive adolescent desire, and "Girlfriend" is for the most part a great rocker. However, after the relatively simple production of Girlfriend, his later albums got bogged down in an attempt to recreate a "wall of sound" feeling, which quite frankly doesn't really work unless you're Phil Spector. Not much here can be completely discounted and the new songs fit in quite well (although I probably would have included "Evangeline" at the expense of "Ready"). Despite the undeniable quality of the music there is nothing life-changing here and ultimately great music must at least have the semblance of being life-changing. Still heartily recommended for fans of catchy, melodic pop-rock.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Pleasing Material On This CD
I first heard Matthew Sweet in the early nineties when 'Sick Of Myself' was getting some airplay over here in Australia. I liked the song so I went out and bought '100% Fun' on cassette. I enjoyed some of the songs, didn't like some others. So instead of buying it on CD I bought this 'Best Of' instead. My opinion of this album is the same as for '100% Fun'. Although most of the tracks are different from '100% Fun' there are only some songs I like enough to keep listening to. The rest aren't really that good. The tracks I truly enjoy are Sick Of Myself, We're The Same, If Time Permits and So Far. I guess it's not too bad to use as background music while you're doing something else (like writing album reviews!). The more attention you pay to the music the worse the songs sound, besides the few good ones. Matthew Sweet is certainly capable of writing good songs, just not enough of them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Badfinger's Final Apple Album Is Hit And Miss Affair
Long unavailable, ASS was Badfinger's fourth and final album for the Apple label. Their self-titled debut for Warner Bros. would be released a mere three months after ASS. That, coupled with the fact that Apple did little to promote the album, resulted in an album that failed to chart. Despite the album's poor chart showing, it is not without it's highlights.
5-0 out of 5 stars The unjustly forgotten Apple album
While Badfinger's Straight Up and No Dice albums are widely and deservedly considered classics, their Apple swan song, "Ass" gets so little attention that it's never even been released domestically.Few people outside the core of die-hard fans even know it exists.Too bad, because they're missing some stellar moments. While power-pop was the buzzword that surrounded much of the rest of the band's catalog, "Ass" doesn't come off quite as sweet and is all the better for it."Ass" was Badfinger stretching out and showing that they were more than recycled Beatle hooks and harmonies. While "Apple Of My Eye", Ham's achingly appropriate tip of the hat to the band's soon to be ex-label, captures the band's sound of old, several of the other songs seem to come from a harder edged, refreshingly different vein."Timeless" is quite possibly Pete Ham's finest recorded moment with it's slow-building intensity, harrowing guitar and fade to infinity ending, and if nothing else shows just how huge a talent the world lost a short time later.Pete was not only a gifted songwriter, but as this song also shows, a brilliant guitarist. These two songs along with "Constitution", "Icicles", "Blind Owl" and "I Can Love You" are the albums undoubted highlights, but only Mike Gibbins' "Cowboy" seems out of place on the album.Despite it's thrown together, admittedly rushed feel, Ass is a great Badfinger album that has never recieved a fair shake. It's nice to see this import only re-release for those who missed it the first time around, but I have my doubts as to whether this will wake people up to what they've been missing.Again, too bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ass is good
A darn good album and a brilliant song is "Apple Of My Eye". Pete Ham's beautiful voice and a fantastic sentiment about leaving behind the Beatles label. has there ever been anyone like him since? Hopefully this reissue is remastered. All the material is great. Ham's guitar at the end of "Constitution" is excellent. Molland's "I Can Love You" is another favorite of mine. Too bad he turned out to be such a dip, putting out that atrociously produced not-really live LP, a let's-make-a-quick-buck collection of some demos of his that was shoddy, and his horribly embarrassing covers CD's of many Badfinger classics that take away from people buying the legitimate stuff. Joey --- Come back to reality!! It's not about the money--- Granted this album isn't perfect, like "Straight Up," but it's my second favorite Badfinger LP. Thanks to Mike B. for turning me on to it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Children of Nuggets is minor league comp.
This sophomore collection holds no comparison to the more influential Nuggets collections-- Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968; or Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts from the British Empire and Beyond. Those two box sets highlighted some unknown and early punk and pop rock influences and proved as influential as Harry Smith's folk collection. Not so here. I counted about an 1/8th of the songs decent, but have to ask how often will you return to these novelties? Not much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Killer collection
Having bought the two previous box set releases it was a no-brainer to pick this up. A great collection of tunes on this set. I wish other labels would spend the extra time and bucks to put out quality box sets like Rhino records does.
1-0 out of 5 stars It shouldn't even be called Children of Nuggets...
I bought this box set thinking it'd be as great as the first two and I was extremely disappointed... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sensational Stiff collection!
Like a British Lily Tomlin, Tracey Ullman has a great gift for mimicry--not impersonations, but creating new and eccentric characters that attempt to mirror humanity. Also like Lily Tomlin, Ullman is an actress of some surprising skill, and she's actually much more endearing just playing ordinary women in comical situations ("I Love You to Death", "A Dirty Shame"). I don't know if her short-lived singing career was reflective of the Real Tracey, but indeed the music seems to have splintered off from her natural personality and effervescence, and this imbues the material (girl group, New Wave, retro pop) with jubulient, engaging sass. This Best-Of on the U.K. Stiff label is a very enjoyable outing complete with informative liner notes and chart information. Ullman considered this portion of her career a complete fluke, and word has it that her vocals were sweeted a bit in the studio, but that doesn't matter because her spirit comes through--she's alternately romantic ("They Don't Know", a note-for-note copy of the Kirsty MacColl original), swooning ("Move Over Darling"), heart-rending ("Shattered"), comically forlorn ("Sunglasses", one of her very best), nostalgic ("Life is a Rock", a Reunion cover with a how-did-they-do-that? rapping effect), and vulnerable ("You Broke My Heart in 17 Places"). She's tough but tender, wise and vulnerable. If this was truly all an act, and it probably was (with tongue greatly in cheek), it was still quite a gift to anyone who loves big, Spector-ish, romantic pop music. Out of the 21 tracks here, only two or three miss the mark, and that's a pretty good average for a comedienne who considered her music career a lark.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comedienne who can also sing
Various compilations have been released on CD with different track listings. The compilations all duplicate each other to some extent but there are significant differences.4-0 out of 5 stars A complement to the US compilation
Not quite interchangeable with the US "You Broke My Heart..." (Rhino)collection, since this one has seven tracks (3,4,10,14,18,20,21) not on that disk. Consider this one as a complement to "You Broke...", which should be your first choice for its better song selection, but do pick this up. Ullman has an obvious affection for girl group and pop readymades that is fun to listen to. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nazz
It's 1968, and a very young Todd Rundgren (about 20 years old to be exact) is the guitar player of a psychedelic/blues band from Philidelphia called The Nazz (named after a Yardbirds song).
5-0 out of 5 stars Multi-faceted, talented, multi-dimentional band
Here is a response to some of the other reviews: In a recent interview with Michael Tearson, Stewkey refers to the opening riff of "Open My Eyes" as "one of the sounds that was part of, and could be heard in the air, at that time", or something like that. Was this the first sample of the Who? This band is fully representative of the "Philly Sound". All the white bands of the mid-late 60's (English, and American) influenced each other, as well. "Wildwood Blues" is about a popular New Jersey shore spot, frequented by people from the Philadelphia area- "Look Harvey...a crab!" This album is a quality album. Nary a weak spot can be found...from an era where pop/rock/blues based bands threw out songs to complete albums in efforts to quell pressures from record company executives.

I discovered the band on the Nuggets box, and I was keen to listen to more of their musics. And I loved what I listened to in this first album.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best in power pop
This is the first and best of the Off Broadway catalogue. An Off Broadway concert on DVD is now available on ebay. Check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Off Broadway
I grew up in Naperville, Illinois, and The Loop played them (along with WLS, which someone else sited already). I thought that they rivaled The Cars for their edgy music when Punk/New Wave/Alt was struggling against the old rock genre. Wish their website hadn't disappeared, they were still touring up to a few months ago...they're still a part of what I considere the music that I grew up with and still love. Wish I could have seen them in concert!

3-0 out of 5 stars Typical Todd......Brilliant yet confusing
This one is yet another work from Todd that could have been much greater than what it turned out to be.Although the music is interesting in spots, and the true heart of Todd (all Todd fans know the "sound" I am referring to) appears here and there, it yet is another experimental work from this sometimes genius.Full of ego and sonic wonder, it can pull at the heart strings and soak you up with sweet pop sounds one minute: "Lost Horizon," and "Blue Orpheus," and bombastic yet somewhat irritating noodlings of the next: "Miracle in the Bazaar" and "Lockjaw."Not his best work of the 1980's, (this kudo goes to the brilliant pop gem "Nearly Human" from 1989), but definitely a must have for any hardcore Todd fan's collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Instruments need not apply
Like the title suggests, Todd Rundgren created "A Cappella" entirely with his voice. It sounds gimmicky, and it is..but, it really works. Due to computerized manipulation, he's even able to add percussion like sounds via his voice. So it doesn't sound as bare as you might think.
5-0 out of 5 stars Child Memories
I remember listening to this when I was about 6 years old. There is nothing more that I could ask of this album.I remember dancing like a crazy child with my father to Hodja, standing on his feet so it would look more coordinated.Lockjaw used to be cool, then when I got ahold of the record jacket, and read the lyrics, I was frightened by the pretense of that song for a good while. But I got over that years ago, and now love the song once again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wow - Who'd a thunk it?
I found this album's link on a Worst Album Covers site, and upon reading the reviews was shocked to discovered that I know a Playmates song. "Beep Beep" was a standard on Dr. Demento's playlist back in the 70's. That sort of says it all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ummmm....what?
Good lord... you gotta be kidding me. After listening to a few of the sample cuts on this site, it is no wonder I have never heard of the Playmates. Go buy Freak Out from the Mothers of Invention and save the Playmates for the squares.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
Dude, this is some of the better yet least known 50s music you'll ever find. "What is Love" and "Joanne" are hugely underrated among that genre. Let's not even get into "Beep, Beep" which also is way cool. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Singer, songwriter, bandleader, producer, cult figure, gadfly, self-promoting visionary, and techno-geek provocateur for any number of revolutionary musical and home-entertainment breakthroughs--which Todd Rundgren would you anthologize? On this 27-track, double-disc compendium, Rhino has ably distilled Rundgren's restless, often overblown ambitions and playfully obtuse artistic vision into what passes for its original essence. With the exception of the Nazz's emblematic "Open Your Eyes," these songs are culled mostly from the handful of solo albums Rundgren produced during a 15-year span that also saw him produce hit records for everyone from Grand Funk to XTC, as well as front the prog-rock Utopia. What the CD reveals is an artist not only fueled by the Beatles-led Brit invasion of his teens and Bell Records soul of his native Philadelphia, but one whose heartfelt romantic ballads ("I Saw the Light," "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference") are so perfectly crafted that they sound like nothing short of outtakes from Carol King's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OHIOLoves Todd Rundgren>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
A true musical genius. Take a blow get a ZyR voduski and snapple lemonade and let the music cover you up. PowerPLUS from the 70's and 80's. Tight lyrics and pop masterpiece arangements. go todd go.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good compilation for its era, but get Utopia's, too
This is a good place to start for Todd Rundgren/Utopia collectors.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not enough music for your money, but still worthwhile.
With just four songs representing it here, the truly essential Todd Rundgren album "Something/Anything" is simply not given its due.Unfortunately, there really are no other worthwhile Rundgren anthologies out there, so what you may want to do is purchase this anthology and supplement it by buying individual albums with the bigger concentrations of Todd's best work.I would argue that 1974's "Todd" also deserved more tracks included, especially the "Sidewalk Cafe/Izzat Love?" suite (sweet!).

3-0 out of 5 stars title for your review
This is a review of the original American vinyl LP, which includes everything here except "Angelique", "Give It a Try", "Storm in a Teacup", and "Arthur".I'll have nothing to say about these four additional tracks. I've never heard them, in fact.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Album!
Magic Christian Music was the first album to bear the Badfinger name, though 6 of the songs on the album are in fact old Iveys recordings that had already been released on theMaybe Tomorrow album. Some of the recordings were done with Paul McCartney, and he obviously helped the band create their characteristic sound. Great tracks like "Midnight Sun", "Crimson Ship" and "Come and Get it" point clearly in the direction of the classic follow-up album "No Dice". "Walk Out in the Rain" is another stand-out track. "Rock of All Ages" is probably the wildest rocker the band ever recorded. "Maybe Tomorrow" which had been a minor hit for the Iveys, was also selected for this album. The material in this album is too varied in style and quality to make a real strong consistent album. The two bonus tracks are Iveys recordings from late 68 - none of them very interesting. 4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - an excellent album
Magic Christian Music (1970.) Badfinger's second album, and the first to be released under the name Badfinger (their first album was released under the band's original name, The Iveys.) This album is actually a collection of songs from various sources. To give you a better understanding of this album/compilation, I am going to deviate from my normal reviewing style.Read more

I think I can safely say this must be the 400th 80's collection out there. Hey, choices are good right. Like any collection of this sort, the more songs you like on it, the better it is. I would call a dozen of these awesome, the other dozen not so. My favorites are from 'Til Tuesday, Blue Oyster Cult, The Romantics, Adam Ant, and The Outfield. Many others are good too, but then there's the ones we've heard way too many times also. I'd say give it a shot if it has that song you've been looking for, or if it's a few bucks used.
