5-0 out of 5 stars Good time early sixties pop music
The Searchers, like everybody else of their era, were overshadowed by the Beatles, but they made some great music of their own. All the essential hits are here - their only American top ten hit (Love potion No. 9), plus all their big British hits, several of which were covers of American songs - which, of course, is why they didn't have much success in America.4-0 out of 5 stars CHEESY BUT FUN
THE SEARCHERS were one of five groups stamped as MERSEY BEAT groups during the BRITISH INVASION.Apart from THE BEATLES,easily the best group of the bunch, there were THE DAVE CLARK FIVE,GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS,HERMAN'S HERMITS and THE SEARCHERS.All of those bands were essentially singles oriented.Notice how WHEN YOU WALK IN TO THE ROOM sounds like THE BEATLES I FEEL FINE.Still, some of their singles, all included here are part of the so called 1963-1966 era,and have that innocence that after 1967 will be lost forever.SOMEDAY WE'RE GONNA LOVE AGAIN and EVERYBODY COME CLAP YOUR HANDS were probably their two best tunes. When THE SEARCHERS released SECONDHAND DEALER in 1967,the clean cut image went downhill, and JOHN WAYNE took his STETSON and shoot them all out, regaining the title of his most famous western.

5-0 out of 5 stars A FIVE FOR CONTENT AND PERFORMANCE!
The mid-sixties gave us so much terrific music, it was hard for any one group (besides the Beatles) to stand out of the crowd. The Searchers were an exception.Their music was so well crafted and performed that inretrospect their best was as good as it got.Great tunes, well sung andrecorded, this music stands up well even thirty years later. And one thingwhich you've got to love--there is a lot of diversity in their music.Idon't give many 5-star ratings, so be sure to put his album on your"must-have" list of 60's rock. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 4766 Seconds of Pure Pop Genius.
4766 SECONDS is one of my all-time favorite cds, and in a world of dumbed-down popular music, Teenage Fanclub has never sounded better. This definitive "best-of" compilation is a work of pure pop genius. The band's warm, feel-good harmonies are reminiscent of a Sixties' band, a sweet blend of the Byrds, Beach Boys, and the Beatles, only with an edge, and the instrumentation is filled with fuzzy guitars, psychedelic riffs, and catchy hooks. The tracks on this compilation cd include "The Concept," "Ain't That Enough," "The World'll Be OK," "Everything Flows," "Star Sign," "Mellow Doubt," "I Need Direction" (my favorite song on the cd), "About You," "What You Do To Me," "Empty Space," "Sparky's Dream," "I Don't Want Control Of You," "Hang On," "Did I Say," "Don't Look Back," "Your Love Is The Place Where I Come From" (my second favorite tune), "Neil Jung," "Radio," "Dumb Dumb Dumb," "Planets," and "My Uptight Life." For the full effect, I recommend listening to this cd on an Apple iPod.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!!!
I am not going to bother you lot with too many superlatives about this Scottish band. Needless to say there are ommisions to this 'Best Of' compilation such as Mount Everest and If I Never See You Again, and yet it is a quality retrospective of their work. They remind me of The Beach Boys, not only because of the close harmonies, but also the fact that a lot of the songs are very understated in tone. But also Nirvana, as they could prove just as comfortable with an accoustic guitar as an electric guitar. The MAIN reason why I purchased this album though is because of the 3 new tracks available on it. Of the three new songs I would have to rate 'Did I Say' as not only the best track on the album, but quite possibly one of the most beautiful and uplifting tunes of the last ten years by anyone. Forget Travis, Coldplay and all the other British music chancers of recent years, Teenage Fanclub are the real deal!

4-0 out of 5 stars exactly what i was looking for
it's true: when placed up against some of the 70s punk and 80s college rock bands that influenced them so profoundly, teenage fanclub's 90s alterna-pop songs can sound hopelessly thin. but we can't fault the fannies for that. this is as good an assembly of guitar pop songs as any other band that ever saw a stage could put out. teenage fanclub did for me what matthew sweet never could: they made this inherently flawed (and often transparent) genre emotional and significant. i'm glad i got this record: it's sunny, it's catchy, it's uplifting, well-constructed, easy to listen to, and good for those nostalgia trips...and, let's be honest: it means i don't have to buy any more teenage fanclub records. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is good.
Believe it or not, 'turning japanese' is the worst song on this thing. This is much better than 'good charlotte'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnets is on this CD, just to be clear
This is perhaps one of the best value CDs out there, imho. Both of these albums contain one great song after another. And you get all of both albums on one CD(!) Ahh, the days of albums under 40 minutes. Not a wasted note here. Fans of current bands like Blink 182 or Green Day will like the Vapors. Neither New Wave, nor Punk (and not at all an 80s haircut band) the Vapors just made good rock music that you can sing/pogo too all night.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmeric
Hardly known except for their least-impressive 'hit' 'turning japanese,' the Vapours are a sleeper gem that transcend the time period in which the band existed. The music is full of depth, the lyrics deep and perplex; even though it came into being during the new wave generation, applying such a label would be grossly underestimating the brilliance of the Vapour's music.

2-0 out of 5 stars Big Star In Space Sucks!
Jody Stephens thought Ken Stringfellow and Jon Aur would be good for a Big Star reunion.Bad idea! The two guys from The Posies make Big Star sound like fluff.Big Star In Space ruins the reputation and legend of Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens. There are better choices for musicians to become part of a Big Star reunion.Alex and Jody should give the two posies the boot and start from scratch. There is still a masterpiece Big Star album waiting to be written, recorded and released. In Space is an embarrassment compared to the songs and musicianship of # 1 Record and Radio City.Save your money and order vinyl copies of Big Stars early albums from Acoustic Sounds.I got Radio City and # 1 Record on vinyl and they sound incredible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boogie Down
I have to say that those that complain about the RnB stuff on here are just a little to white for me. Someone should tie you guys down and make you listen to classic James Brown, Sly Stone et al. That said, this is a great little record. Dony and All hung up on summer are instant power-pop classics and the rest is great as well. Don't like RnB covers? Go listen to some windham hill records. Meanwhile I will put on my boogie shoes and shake it like a white girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I see is so exactly what I need to find
I'm a little surprised to see so much wringing of hands over "In Space" not being like the old Big Star.

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing major songs
After The Knack released "Get the", they instantly became my favorite band. I still to this day enjoy listening to the entire album. Although I lost interest after thier 2nd album (mainly because of the introduction Harder/Glam Rock like Van Halen, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, etc) they still should have been supported better than they were. The reason I'm only giving "Best of" 3/5 stars is the lack of other songs off of "Get the" such as my favorite "She's so (Selfish)", "The Monkey and me", "Frustrated" and "Maybe Tonight". If you don't own any Knack, your better off buying "Get the" instead of "Best of". Don't agree? Read the other reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Power Pop Album
The Knack, The Romantics and Bazooka Jones all have a way of delivering a perfect three minute power pop gem. The Knack are the very best the genre has to offer and this album represents some of their best work. It takes me back in a good way, but still sounds as fresh as the day I heard it. Great song crafting and top-notch musicianship. Buy this record.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sunny late 70's power pop
This is truly one of the most excelent compilation of a sunny late '70s california power pop."the knack" who became famous all over in late june 1979 thanks to their all times greatest No'1 "My Sharona" and their less familiar but still a huge hit on it's on right-"Good girls don't",is truly a simple catchy fun.heard them first time on vacation on some FM radio station back in july 1979 while driving along the red sea in sinai.my feet just started hitting the car floor and soon i was dancing in the driver's seat, twisting and shouting "Hoooo you make my motor run ma ma ma my sharona".later on that same day i was lucky enough to hear one of their quiet pieces-"maybe tonight" which became one of my favorites ever since.people, for those of you who remembers and for those of you who likes the happy cheerful melodic of the 1970's rock, just go and "get the knack". ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Enough.
Most of the songs are good, but very few are actually very good. They are consistently decent. The more interesting tracks for me are : Starry Eyes, I Don't Remember Your Name, Girl, Held Up High, Imitation Jewellery, and Rock and Roll Love Letter (which is a cover of a Tim Moore song).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good retrospective of a footnote band
This is an enjoyable disc that I bought to get two essential tracks from the era, "Rock and Roll Lovesong" and "Starry Eyes."The rest of the disc is not as strong as other bands but still an enjoyable listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot more to this group than "starry eyes"
If you love power-pop you'll want to have a few CD's by the Records in your collection. This is a good place to start because it has a mix of tracks from the first three releases.

4-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS CD!
If you love Weezer's first 2 albums, then get this CD by Ozma. It's really, really fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most under-rated albums of all time!!!
This record is pure genius. Amazing songwriting, sweet guitar solos. Great vocals. If you want the best, you got the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Little Gem of an Album
This band is frequently compared to Weezer, but quite frankly, Weezer hasn't made an album this quirky or this catchy before. That's not to say that Ozma is a better band than Weezer, they just write some catchy tunes!

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent debut, though the remastering is incorrect
For far too many people, The Vapors' career consists of nothing more than the very overrated "Turning Japanese". While it is a pleasant bit of harmless New Wave, the band had songs which were far superior.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another band of great potential eaten by the machine
The Vapors released a great New Wave debut album in 1980 in New Clear Days.Everybody has, of course, heard Turning Japanese. It's the one song that forces The Vapors into "One-hit wonder" status, which is unfortunate. 5-0 out of 5 stars UK Mod/New Wave Power Pop Masterpiece!!!!!!!!
I bought this in '80, I don't get tired of it.....simply put this is THE record from the late 70's - early '80's New Wave period....w/ the bonus trax the power and beauty of the original is greatly enhanced......sweep this up NOW!!! These bands are gone!!!! The kiddie bands today don't hold a candle to The Vapors' level of playing or songwriting....melodic, poppy, catchy, heavy and beautiful...Here Comes the Judge says what the Vapors were all about.....this cd/record is in my top 5 of all time for this period along w/ the remasters of Machine Gun Etiquette by the Damned, 999's 1st, Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady, Jam Box Set (ok, I'm cheating) and Undertones A's and B's.......good luck!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Power pop classic and its good, but less classic follow-up
Coming from the same L.A. milieu that launched Peter Case into The Plimsouls, Collins left their shared band (The Nerves, together with Jack Lee) to form The Beat, rechristened Paul Collins' Beat after The (English) Beat broke onto these shores. Their first album, simply titled "The Beat" is a bona fide 1979 power pop classic, matching the electricity of contemporaneous releases by The Records ("Shades in Bed") andBram Tchaikovsky ("Strange Man, Changed Man") and the following year's debut by The Plimsouls ("Zero Hour").
4-0 out of 5 stars The Beat is Back!
The Beat (or Paul Collins' Beat, the moniker they eventually took on to avoid confusion with The English Beat, and in the UK, this album was called "The American Beat" for the same reasons) cut thier gem of a debut album in 1979, when it seemed every band in Los Angeles with a skinny tie and a jangle guitar got a deal. And like many of them, they got swept away in the backlash that formed around The Knack. Collin's fate was undeserved, because this album just bristles with energy and pop smarts.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of my favorites ever....
ok i need to apologize to myself for not listening to this album the past few months(because before that i was sooooo hooked on it!) but SOMEONE(whether you are reading this sooner or later, probably later) has not been making it any fun because he makes it seem too obnoxious, anyways whatever, this album is great!! when they made this album they were just some kid punk band in a historical time, something sucked back then to make this music just great! unlike most other bands in america by the time this was made, a lot of people were playing very fast(not like that is bad but...) but red cross played music inspired by what THEY thought was good, who cares what everyone else thinks?
3-0 out of 5 stars LIKE A SUN ABOUT TO GO NOVA
this is the reissue of red kross' debut album.redd kross to me are a great band full of meldoy and fun and great pop hooks and unlike most bands that trade melody for pop appeal, redd kross revel in pop but retain the music quality.5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and trashy
Redd Kross, Red Cross, whatever you wanna call 'em... I dig it. How can I NOT like a punk band who started with a 12 year old bass player? On this record, the bass player is the ripe old age of 14. Killer. And he's actually pretty good.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great two-fer:too bad about the packaging
It pains me to give only four stars to a CD that contains the two best albums by one of my all-time favorite bands, but I have a problem with the packaging.I have both these albums on vinyl, but one of the discs is warped, so I bought this CD.The music sounds as great now as it ever did, but I was disappointed that they went with bargain-bin packaging here:no lyrics, no pictures (except for tiny reproductions of each album cover), no liner notes.Albums this great deserve better treatment, and I would gladly pay double the price for high-quality reissues that at least contained the original artwork and lyric sheets.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great cd, but you won't be getting it for $17 anytime soon...
If you are like me, you may have wondered about all the listings where a rare, collectable item that sells for quite a bit normally is supposedly available from Amazon for a much lower amount "normally delivered in 4 - 6 weeks" or thereabouts. Well, I'm here to tell you, they don't have the title and it doesn't appear to be on its way. I ordered several such items, including this great Shoes cd on June 2, just to see what happened. So far nothing... not a peep. All Amazon is doing is putting their legitimate selling and buying customers at an unfair disadvantage while tying up your money (in case they ever do ship it). If I had ordered from an Amazon Merchant, I could have been enjoying this cd for the last 6 weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites.
I have been listening to this CD on a regular basis since 1989! Do the math, that's 17 years! I still believe this is one of the best CD's of all time. They didn't quite fit in the 80's glam genre, sure they looked glam but they have kind of Beatle's melody thing going. Hard to describe... so, I recommend you buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Power pop
I'm sittin' listening to "looking for the Magic," and it is sooo good. The entire power pop seems to get swept aside as some trifle. Bands like The Motors were incredibly swingin'. I don't think there's a bad song on this disc. The Brits got it right with Bram Tskovsky, Ducks Deluxe, Mongo Jerry, The Tyla Gang, Dave Edmunds, Rockpile and Nick Lowe. I like to sing in the shower.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Minus One
To me, a great greatest hits CD is one that keeps me out of the basement pulling out my old LP's.This one was close, but where is You Were So Warm?!?How could anyone think a Dwight Twilley CD could be complete without this power pop classic!!! If you like Mathew Sweet, you will love Twilley.

5-0 out of 5 stars CRUISIN' TO TWILLEY
Back in the 70's when we headed out to cruise the streets ofOklahoma City in the Z-28, the first thing we did was put in my copyof Dwight Twilley's "Sincerely" album in the 8-Track. Whenthat first song "I'm on Fire" came on, we were ready for thestreets. All those other Hot Rods had their ... blaring out of theirspeakers with their mindless rock and ... singing, while welistened to the perfect pop and great voice of the kid from Tulsa, andwe were proud of it. And the women loved it too. And that's all thatreally counted to us back then. Well, I bought the upgraded CD versionof "Sincerely" a couple years ago, and now I've got the restof Twilley's old stuff with this Greatest Hits CD. The first few songson here are from his first 3 albums that I had on vinyl. All great andmemorable tunes. But you get so much more here from a guy whose carrerhas quietly moved along without anybody ever taking notice of thisgreat lost talent. Songs like "Sky Blue", "10,000American Scuba Divers", "Girls", "I'm OnFire", or "Looking For The Magic" would easily make mytop 40 if I was a DJ spinning records. But in the real world thisartist was criminally overlooked. Even the song "That Thing YouDo", which Twilley recorded hoping it would make it in Tom Hanksmovie of the same name, was passed over for an inferior song. I guessthat's just par for the course for Dwight Twilley.I highly recommendnot passing up this fine Greatest Hits CD. I think I'll head out andtry this Greatest Hits CD in the car stereo. Man, cruisin' never getsold when you have the fresh pop of Dwight Twilley ridin' with ya.END ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid effort
Nice to see the CT boys back to writing more on their own. I know it was their downfall in the mid 80's but they do it better by themselves. Only a few tracks here have outside influence.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pop Classic
I'm so happy to see that this has been rereleased and hope that it sells so that others can discover what a great talent Mitch Easter has at writing songs and playing guitar.Sure, REM can thank him for doing the knob-twiddling for their first 3 releases that set them apart in college radio, but Easter deserves credit for all of the work that Let's Active did as a band. They were fantastic live as well if you ever got the chance. If you like some of the quirkier indy bands that are popular these days you'll find a lot to like on "Big Plans . . ."

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic album
i love cypress/afoot, will always love it. the 2 albums are different enough that comparisons need not be made. so let's enjoy the greatness of this album seperately.
5-0 out of 5 stars at last on CD...
If ever a band was criminally overlooked by the music industry, it's Let's Active. Each album they did is excellent. All their songs appear to be middle-of-the-road pop/rock at first but each listen seems to bring something new with it. You could put Mitch Easter right up with any recognized 'great' songwriter of the past 30 years, easily. 'Big Plans For Everybody' is their 2nd LP, and it sounds like a cross between REM's 'Green' and The Stone Roses first album, and yeah it pre-dates both of those. 5 stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good stuff from the edge of the 80's
It could be argued that much of what's included in this set actually belonged on a 70's collection, but that's beside the point. You get pretty good bang for the buck with this disc unless you have already invested in another collection that includes some of the more common songs on here.(By common I mean songs like The Knack's "My Sharona".Good, but is it new wave?)By contrast, songs like Blondie's "One Way Or Another", Nick Lowe's excellent "Cruel To Be Kind", Graham Parker's likewise brilliant "Local Girls", Dave Edmunds' "Girls Talk" or The Flying Lizards' version of "Money", are nothing short of brilliant inclusions.Plastic Bertrand's "Ca Plane Pour Moi" never struck me as great, but when I played this disc in the car with my daughter and her friends one day, they shocked me by singing along with the song word for word.Turns out it made a Mary Kate & Ashley movie soundtrack.(And I haven't seen Vol. 1 since.)Great stuff, but "Video Killed The Radio Star"?Was that necessary?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent faire for the 80's enthusiast's
A few of these songs on this disc are pretty common amongst 80's fans (Blondie's One Way or Another, Nick Lowe's Cruel to Be Kind, The Knack's My Sharona and The Buggles VKtRS) but there are a few seriously excellent unknown gems on this disc that a majority of the people will enjoy I think.Starting with Ca Plane Pour Moi from Plastic Bertrand, then skipping to Graham Parker's Local Girls. The highlight of the disc is Tim Curry's (Rocky Horror Picture Show) insane song, I Do the Rock which seems to get better with every listen.Out of the entire collection, I give this one a rating of 7.5 out of 10

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent sampling of early New Wave hits (dancing optional)
New Wave was the term used to describe the music that came after punk rock in the late 1970s and early 1980s, although certainly it included post-punk music as well. However, I never really thought of it sas "dance" music, which means nothing because I never went dancing to disco, techno, or anything in between. So this might be Volume 1 of "New Wave Dance Hits" but I just think of it as a solid New Wave collection.New Wave might have been the pop music of its time, but it retained the vigor and irreverence of punk music as well as being musically more sophisticated with its interest in electronics and such. This collection has the virtue of including the songs that defined the change in music, namely the Knack's "My Sharona," the Ramones "Rock & Roll High School," and the song that heralded the creation of MTV, "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. These sixteen tracks are devoted more to the one-hit wonders like Tim Curry's "I Do the Rock" and "Gidget Goes to Hell" by Suburban Lawns rather than the big name groups like Blondie (Nick Lowe and Graham Parker are not quite in Deborah Harry's league). But once you get beyond "One Way or Another" you are dealing with Plastic Bertrand and the Flying Lizards rather than Duran Duran, Culture Club, and the Pretends, which is fine, because the point of a hit collection like this one is to add songs you do not have to your music library. In that regard, Volume 1 of "New Wave Dance Hits" should easily provide you with a half-dozen songs worth having. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A great CD from my original college days
This album made Ride a little more palatable for the casual listener, which should have really given them some sort of success because this is good record. The arrangements are all really simple, but still sound great with all of that distortion and layering washing over them. I saw them at the 930 club for the tour of this album and they were excellent. I had seen them previously for the Nowhere tour and they were with Lush. That show wasn't so good. Hmmmmm... Wish I could go dig the CD out of storage right now.

3-0 out of 5 stars (three and a half stars) good overall, but no "Nowhere"
It' simple really. If you, like me, are a huge fan of Ride's album "Nowhere," when you heard "Leave it all Behind," (the first song on Ride's third album, "Going Blank Again") you were pleased as punch that the band would continue their "Shoegazer" styled sound. When you heard the second song, "Twisterella," your reaction was "what the **** is this!"Of course, if you like "Twisterella," then you probably thought that the song was a refreshing departure from the band's past.

The great thing about being part of a musical collective is that not only can you draw from the work of your peers for inspiration, you can rely on your peers themselves. As part of Elephant 6, the Apples in Stereo are involved in a symbiotic relationship with such like-minded bands as Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel. For example, Apples frontman Robert Schneider produced a previous OTC album and OTC controller William Cullen Hart designed the artwork for the Apples' new record, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good psychedelic pop EPwith three greatsongs - most should like it - 4.5 stars
"Her Wallpaper Reverie" may be a pretty short EP, but it's definitely worth it. The EP has three great psychedelic pop songs ("The Shiney Sea", "Strawberryfire" and "Ruby"), and while the rest aren't as great they're still very good. It's just a very interesting and creative EP. I wouldn't call it a "classic", but genre fans will definitely love every minute of it. The lyrics tend to be pretty pointless, although they can be interesting at times (and catchy - see "Ruby"). The musicianship is very 60's-ish - it could've easily come out in that decade. Indie pop fans will love this, and everyone else will probably like the first three "real" songs on here (the roman numeraled songs are psychedelic experimental instrumentals). For $10.00, though, I don't think it has enough songs on it to warrant a "5". All in all, this is highly recommended!
3-0 out of 5 stars Good songs but too few
I got this Cd because I liked the two Cds "Fun Trick Noisemaker" and "tone soul evolution" and that I had heard the songs on it were the best so far. When I listened to the Cd I was disappointed, the songs that were there were indeed very good, but there were too few and the Cd was too brief. The Apples attempt to sound like Olivia Tremor Control with the artistic sounds didnt work for such a short EP, and the fact that they all sounded the same. But the songs that are there are very good, heavily influenced by the Kinks and the Beatles. A good Cd but shouldnt be priced over $5.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much noodling, not enough songcraft
Her Wallpaper Reverie is simultaneously one of the best and worst CDs I've listened to in a long time. How can it be both at once, you're asking? Well, it's rather like this...Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most distinctive and unique band of New Wave
It's funny that back in the early 90's, I daydreamed about when/if the Altered Images catalog would be put to CD. Over a decade later, all three studio albums have made more than one appearance on CD, and a total of four compilation CD's have been issued. This is definitely the best of the four compilation CD's, at least as far as sound quality goes.
