4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD
This album by Unwritten Law really won me over. The opening track 'Mean Girl' pulls you straight in. Scott uses many different techniques vocally to keep the audience interested. Some acoustic tracks and heavier tracks in there; depends on what kind of music you like. 5-0 out of 5 stars Slow...Fast...Punk...Good
The first 2 tracks on this CD ["Mean Girl" & Up All Night] pretty much say it all about this Unwritten Law disc."Mean girl" starts out slow then evolves into a fast hardcore punk sounding song--it's great. Then, up all night does almost the reverse of "Mean Girl" by starting fast and slowing down--its fantastic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of their albums.
An amazing record! No kidding one of the best discs I've heard in a while. Kinda of a cross between Non Point and Weezer, with a new sound at's it's core. 5 stars for sure! But avoid "Here to the mourning"... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely CD
I got a tape of this album when I was still in high school from a friend, I always loved the music and am so glad I can now replace that very tired cassette tape with a CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD!
I am a huge Matthew Sweet fan, and while I have been especially drawn to Altered Beast and Girlfriend, 100% Fun is his one piece of work to which I constantly return. Perhaps my sentimentality is due to the excellent song writing, or maybe I love this CD because out of all the Matthew Sweet albums I own, I enjoy singing along with this one the most... all I know is that I originally bought 100% Fun on cassette and played it so much that it broke, forcing me to re buy it on compact disc. Whatever the reason, 100% Fun is hands- down my favorite album, and exceedingly worthy of high praise.

4-0 out of 5 stars 100% Fun!
The title gets it right - this is a very fun album. There are a lot of great songs on here. Infectious lyrics and music - it still surprises me that Matthew Sweet isn't more popular than he is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too bad they never did the TV show
This is the second more commercial, pop-oriented Utopia album, after 1977's Oops! Wrong Planet, but of course, Todd Rundgren has never been a stranger to pop music, despite progressive/art rock tendencies and excursions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Waited all night... smoked a hundred cigarETTES!!!!
Truly a cool album!I've always liked Rundgren, and he assembled a crack band in "Utopia".
3-0 out of 5 stars almost like the Beatles, but too 80's
We have this one in the car sometimes and I kinda like it although it not perfect. But the songs are pretty hummable and it flows pretty smotth. The only thing is that it has a real "boxy" sound. Something about the way it sounds is just to 80's. My girlfriends ex-boyfriend got it for her birthday a few years back and he actually had the nerve to tell her to give it back. He also wanted her Footlose video back. I told her to give that one back, that music is so cheesy in that movie. That "never never never" song is pityful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World
With their debut full-length, the Smithereens have crafted maybe the finest recording ever. The quarter from Jersey meld a myria of styles from rock to pop to even rockabilly and country to produce an album chock full of toe-tapping tunes that take forever to leave one's head upon listening.Post modern lyrics and deep introspection make Pat DiNizio the finest songwriter of our time and Especially For You is a true gem.Music listners don't know what they are missing if they haven't listened to the Smithereens.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and best of the Smithereens
I looooove this album. It's just pure catchy rock. Saw them on Panama City Beach in 1991 and it was a fun show.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tueday's Groovy (Wednesday's not too shabby either)
If bubble gum isn't your preferred flavor of pop music, The Smithereens offer popcorn.Yeah, that's a good way of putting it; take the band's crunchy guitars, add Pat Dinizio's appropriately salty lyrics, and you're in for an album's worth of good munching.Songs like "Strangers When We Meet", "Groovy Tuesday", "Behind The Wall Of Sleep" and (need I mention?) "Blood And Roses" exemplify the classic Smithereens recipe. They even slather on the butter when the situation calls for it ("Cigarette", "In A Lonely Place" and "Alone At Midnight").Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Stomped to Death by Stinking Management and A Label
that chose to sue the band rather than understand what Pete, Joey, Tom and Mike were going through. The shame of it all is while rock was going into that transitory phase from British Rock and Roll and California Country Rock to Disco, Punk and whatever Springsteen calls his music??? Badfinger in 1974 had recorded an album that not only sounded like "Abbey Road" or even elements of the Beatles' "White Album", but evoke that same magical lyrical imagery so prevalent in the latter Lennon-McCartney era.
5-0 out of 5 stars Abbey Road SIDE #3, maybe!?!?!?!??!
Well, I'm sure you all have heard the problems this band went through, so I won't even go into that. What you have here in Wish You Were Here is not to be mistaken by Pink Floyd's CD of the same title. Just over 30 minutes, this album broke new ground, a different approach then previous releases. I won't sit here and insult anyone's intelligence by stating this is their greatest work. Personally, its my favorite. From start to finish, no bad tracks, some medley's, some excellent choices of intruments never used before on a Badfinger record. This is by all means, the last record of the Classic Badfinger lineup. The comparisons to Abbey Road are prevelent.....but it stands to this day as a Classic Lost Album that will go down in history as just that.....Lost. No hit songs here, no tradmark sounds, just pure brilliance!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Only poor management kept this from being a huge success
The two albums that Badfinger recorded for Warner Brothers after leaving Apple were among the easiest to find in the days before cd's.They could usually be found languishing in used bins for relatively low prices, and it was this that initially threw me off. Finally, faced with the prospect of little known Badfinger over no Badfinger at all, I went ahead and purchased both albums.Imagine my surprise when I got home and found that both albums were loaded with songs on par with, and at times better than, the songs that the band did while with Apple. The whole album is strong, with leadoff shouldabeenahit "Just A Chance" Pete Ham is in fine voice, and one is left to wonder what could have been."Know One Knows" and "Dennis" are equally strong, but it's the rather odd cut and paste songs "In The Meantime/Some Other Time" and "Meanwhile Back At The Ranch/Should I Smoke" that show the band's true brilliance.Within months Pete Ham would be dead and with his passing rock and roll lost one of the truly great songwriters as well as a hugely underrated guitarist. This album demands and deserves a listen and it's a risk you won't regret. ... Thanks to WFUV in NY, I went to their concert at the Rubin Museum and discovered a duo with a beautiful sound. 5-0 out of 5 stars Like this? I LOVE this!
Besides being the best dB's album ever, this album had been criminally deleted and the CD's were fetching ungodly prices on the collectors/used market. Blessedly, this 2006 reissue corrects that injustce. It is, basically, the same as the Rhino issue with new liner notes, with some of the history of how "Like This" came to be.
4-0 out of 5 stars Long Overdue
This reissue had to happen sooner or later and I'm so glad it did.If you were around and into the Paisley Underground/Jangle Pop/American guitar band sounds in the mid-to-late 80's, the dB's were on your radar. When they still had Chris Stamey writing and singing half the songs, they were a quirkier/weirder/more new wave-y band.On this, the first record where Peter Holsapple became the main frontman and chief songwriter/singer, the feel took on a little more of a rootsy tinge.Still, the heart of the dB's was power pop, and "Love is For Lovers," the opener, is one of the great power pop songs of all time. And it is followed by "She Got Soul," which also deserves a place in the power pop Hall of Fame. Holsapple has always been a great ballad writer, and "Lonely Is As Lonely Does" is him at his sad song best. Then there are the unforgettable anthems, "Amplifier" and "Spy in the House of Love."The bonus track, a remixed version of "Spy" with extra beats, is a hoot - the dB's as nightclub music (not so sure about that, but it's funny). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "We are not so many worlds apart"
Since "Blue Sky on Mars," I lost track of what Matthew Sweet was putting out.I still love "100% Fun."It is one of my favorite albums but, since "Blue Sky" wasn't quite as good, I lost interest.Well, running across reviews for "Kimi Ga Suki * Raifu," my interest in Sweet piqued once again.Boy, I'm glad I didn't miss this album! It is incredible! The liner notes explain that Sweet wrote all the tracks over a one-week period and recorded them without any demos.Well, I guess that was a recipe for success. The proof is in the pudding! The album is a gift to his Japanese fans (Sweet calls it a "love letter to Japan") and was originally not released in the United States. It is worth owning as an import for the higher price but, I'm glad it is available here.

5-0 out of 5 stars After 20+ Years It Still Rocks
I have several of his albums and in my opinion, this is his his best.It is rock music with thoughtful (if not "deep"), and sexy lyrics. At the time, he had two commercially successful albums under his belt, but was ridiculed by the music establishment as being a "bubble gum" artist.Living In Oz was his effort to quiet his critics and prove to the world that he could play serious music, not just pop hits.I think he more than accomplished his goal.As a young adult I listened to Rush, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Cars, Foreigner, Cheap Trick, etc.I was a rocker. But to this day I love this guy!23 years later, I can still crank this album up and enjoy every song.I've seen Rick Springfield twice in concert.Once in Denver at Red Rocks back in the early 80's and once at the House of Blues in Orlando in the early 2000's.Both were awesome experiences. I'd go again in minute to see him, and I'd advise anyone who likes 80's rock music to buy this CD.It's a lot of fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Caught Between a Hard, Hard Place and a Rock"
When Living in Oz was released in 1983, gone were Rick Springfield's bubblegum, teeny bopper days of "Jessie's Girl," "Don't Talk to Strangers" and, the worst of the lot, "How Do You Talk To Girls" (ugh). On this album, Rick shows that he knew how to do plenty of things to girls and that he knew how to write interesting and kickin' rock songs. Two of the singles demonstrates the maturity in Springfield's songwriting in terms of music and lyrical content. The synthesizers in "Human Touch" and "Affair of the Heart" bring depth to the music.Yes, it sounds very 1980s but, if you like that sound like I do, this is an album for you.The third single "Souls" and the title track really rock.In fact, I can see hard rock/heavy metal fans liking a lot that is on this album. The evil voice hissing "I'll touch you and squeeze you and make you miiiine" blew me away the first time I heard it (THIS is Rick Springfield?). "Like Father, Like Son" is an interesting track with an orchestra.
5-0 out of 5 stars Go on Rick! Get your rock on!
Nobody believed Rick could be heavy, yet sound so good. An absolute bombastic, energetic, fun album. Rick's finest work. Songs that make you wanna groove and bang your head at the same time. This is a cd that when you hear songs such as "Souls," "Motel Eyes," or "Affair Of The Heart," you'll wish the volume control went pass MAX. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is the fifth album in as many years from John Vanderslice. He continues to use the studio as a workshop and laboratory, allowing songs to flourish as the arrangements blossom. This time out kindred spirit John Darnielle assisted, as editor, co-writer and all around sympathetic aesthetic collaborator (Vanderslice also produced his last two Mountain Goats albums). Brilliantly arranged and played, the fourteen songs are filled with utterly mesmerizing moments, from the haunting chorus on "Plymouth Rock" to the strutting piano figure of "Peacocks in the Video Rain." Vanderslice knows the power of words, with his lyrics mixing narrative certainty with poetic mystery. His melodies can, by turns, underscore the emotional character of the words, and play off of them, expanding the magical possibilities exponentially. Read more

You should certainly check out The Verve Pipe, especially "Underneath"!Great albumns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Master Soundcrafter at Work
John Vanderslice is a very nice man who makes very nice music. Think of early David Bowie on acoustic playing Quicksand and you are approximating some of the goose bumps I feel when I listen to JV's music. The quality of all of John's records is second to none, even on CD media. He is a true craftsman in a day of mass-produced music. Not only are his records the best in sound, but the song writing is excellent. Total original! Like others have said, his songs are very cinematic. Very involving and beautiful. I love driving to work in the dark mornings listening to all his records, but this one especially. This is the shizzle icozizzle!
4-0 out of 5 stars More great JV
This guy can craft sound like nobody's business. The lyrics are excellent stories wrapped in event mystery. The music tone and quality are top notch on every release. The only reason i gave it 4 stars is because I just happen to love a couple other CD's of his a little better. I didn't get as "emotionally vested" in this one but that doesn't mean it's not brilliant. I can't wait to hear this on vinyl. There is no Vanderslice CD that is a dissapointment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Bonus Track On The Import
This is a great CD from the Bongos, but if you're a hard-core fan looking for bonus tracks be aware that the import (on the Line label, 1991) only has 15 tracks, not 16 as Amazon has listed. "Nuts And Bolts" is on the U.S. CD (1992, Razor & Tie) but not on the import.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to hear them again
Had a tape of this some time ago; made the mistake of putting my tape holder over the gas tank on a long drive when I moved. The tape actually melted into the the back of tape holder.Had trouble finding the CD of it in stores; fortunately I found it here.So what do I actually think about it?
5-0 out of 5 stars How to spot a classic in the I-Pod age
So I'm going through my old CD collection and loading songs up on my 40 gig (every song you could possibly want) monster, and I pull this disc out for the first time in at least 5 years. What a revelation. I put every song except "Killed by Love" on the I-Pod.I haven't done that with too many discs.Along with really catchy power pop tunes; there are brilliant lyrics throughout. "I'm an adult now" was the single and it is a great song, but it is far from being the standout cut."She's so young", "Conciousness raising as a social tool", and "Beautiful White" are my 3 faves. The chorus of "She's so young" is classic."She's so young , she' got the answers. She doesn't need to question herself like I do."As my child grows into a teenager that line will begin to take on a different meaning than it did the first time I heard fifteen or so years ago.Whatever happened to these guys anyway? Great group.

4-0 out of 5 stars TPOH
If you only know TPOH by the tune "I'm an Adult Now", you should start with this disc to hear more from the band. "Adult" is a good, humorous track, but far from the best the band has to offer on "Love Junk". Do not judge the band by that song alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Band - You Don't Know!
This album is great. From beginning to end.If you don't know now you know.Listen to all the other great reviews for more confirmation! It's great mix of music you recognize, and songs that will have you listening to more.If you don't own a Teenage Fanclub album, this should be your first. You'll be going back for more. While other albums may be hits and misses. This one is a deff.HIT!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time faves
This is a fantastic album. The fact that 5 star reviews are still being submitted over 10 years after its release (and they're not the beatles or u2 or anything) should speak volumes. I have played this CD countless times over the years and I am amazed that I am not sick of it. I am a pretty constant consumer of new music. Get this CD - you won't regret it! (PS I've never done an Amazon review before, but the fact that this has had only 22 motivated me). It is melodic, catchy, uplifting and cheeky - in short, a little piece of musical bliss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Say Yes And Play Grand Prix
Kao sto su The Smiths obelezili tokom '80. alternativnu pop scenu, tako su Teenage Fanclub obelezili '90. Odlican pop album koji sada vec spada u pop klasiku.

5-0 out of 5 stars a perfect "power pop" band that most have never heard of
Shoes were a Chicago suburb D.I.Y. power pop band. They had a lot of talent but never made it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A marvelous collection of power pop love songs
More than any group of the past thirty years, The Shoes were the most passionate practitioners of rock and roll pop songs about love in the tradition of the early Beatles and the Raspberries. There albums without exceptions are about love between guys and gals. Each song focuses on an upcoming date, the hopes of requited love, the heartache of a relationship that has ended, the regret of things gone wrong.Virtually none deal with love in full bloom; the songs always deal with the hope of love that may be or the lost of love that was.In other words, the wongs deal with the most enduring of all human themes, our need for love.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Shoes
This CD is a must have for rock and roll fans who like to mix a little acoustical guitar with some electric up-tempo tunes. The songs "Too Late", "The Summer Rain, and "Tomorrow Night" will haveyou singing along even when your not playing the CD.Most the songs aretypical "boy-girl" relationship themed that should remind anyoneof the fun and emotions of early adulthood. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The 80s talents live on - a fun cd to enjoy!
Whether this cd represents songs of nostalgia for you from a happy time in the 80s when pop ruled (and the great songs of Rick Springfield) or if it's new discovery for you - this is a fun cd to have. Will put you in a great smiling bopping mood. I would have appreciated VH1 offering us some unreleased track, but it is a fun compilation all the same.A few of my own fav Rick songs are missing but "Love Somebody", "Don't Talk to Strangers" and of course, the eternal ever popular "Jessie's Girl" make the cd fab.
2-0 out of 5 stars Same old songs.
Nothing rare here. Just the same old hits recycled into a new package. I would have thought VH-1 would have dug up some unreleased tracks or remixes, but nope.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rick's Best!!!
Loving this new release of Rick Springfields hits! And its definately cool that new liner notes are included in the CD.All you Rick Springfield lovers should totally check this out.. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly Rockin!
This album is one of the greatest. It has all the classic rock bands from the 70s. You could not ask for anything better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice tunes
I think it's great that the whole series of that 70's show has Big Star in it. They let the people in our generation get a taste of how great the music was in the 70's and i still think Big Star is underrated (must people don't know who they are still). My dad introduced me to the song "feel" on guitar at age 12, and i've been jammin ever since 8 years later. I give credit to some of the other picks too they're great songs...but i don't know if i, or anyone else, would have picked these songs to capture the full 70's experience..thats why 4 stars not 5...groovy man

5-0 out of 5 stars "Take That, 1970's!"
The irony that Big Star would be included on an album of songs from the 1970's (more particularly sprinkled heavily throughout the show's sound track) should topple the foundation of any fans of classic progressive rock.Whomever's choice it was from the show to included "I'm in Love With a Girl" and "Thirteen" as interlude music and "Out in the Streets" as a theme (sorry Cheap Trick, Alex Chilton's version is better...but a nice nod just the same) should be thanked for giving Big Star some deserved attention by the latest generation. But I guess they couldn't use Big Star's version for the theme because it has that line "...wish we had a joint so bad..." just like they can't show the smoke/haze in the basement.I suppose they couldn't mention that the senior class probably unanimously voted Cannabis Sativa as their class flower, either.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Being positive isn't cool , but it's easier to listen to
If you don't know anything about this band , I would say only that they will make you very glad you're not deaf .
5-0 out of 5 stars Their sound turns golden
I really really enjoy all their early work, and it's hard to pick a favorite from any of their diverse albums. But I feel that when they made this, they developed a sort of timeless feel that resonates through later listens.Upon first hearing it I wasn't that impressed, I thought this needs to be more spur of the moment, but then slowly and surely I realized it was great in a different way. They were experimenting and letting the sounds just simmer throughout the album, until you get to "Speed of Light" then you feel completely dumbfounded and trust wherever they wish to venture next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hornby opened the door...
Like a lot of more recent Fanclub-fans, I was introduced to this album by Nick Hornby's "Songbook."The music in here was described as comfort-food, and the absolute antithesis to Suicide's "Frankie Teardrop."That alone got me interested.Other descriptions brought up Beatles and Byrds influences, which can only be a good thing.
