5-0 out of 5 stars R.I.P. BARRY COWSILL
THIS IS REALLY NOT A REVIEW BUT MORE OF A NOTIFICATION THAT BARRY COWSILL WAS LOST IN THE STORM IN NEW ORLEANS DURING "HURRICANE KATRINA", R.I.P. BARRY.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cowsills - 'Best Of The.....' (Rebound)
True life version of the TV family the Partridge Family.Only The Cowsills, were of course 'real' performers. They existed as such from 1966-71.Showing many just how much fun harmless sunshine pop can be.I realize the term 'sunshine pop' sounds really lame, but the Cowsills were actually pretty hip for their time, anyway. There's(or WAS)Bill,John,Barry,Paul,Bob,little sister Susan and mom Barbara(R.I.P.).Tunes that I remember always being a pleasure to listen to are here on this CD compilation like "The Rain,The Park And Other Things","Meet Me At The Wishing Well","Gray Sunny Day" and the unforgetable "Hair"(my favorite).I remember playing the 45 single until I literally worn the record out.Should for sure appeal to fans of Mamas&Papas,Association, the Osmonds,Tommy Roe and Bobby Sherman.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gotta love them!
I found this CD years ago when I was desperate to hear some of my favorite tunes by The Cowsills and it seemed to be the only one around at the time. There are several others around now (I'd recommend the 20th Century Masters), but this one isn't bad either, if you can overlook the less than spectacular sound qualities. By the time I'd found this one, I was so overjoyed to hear the sweet harmonies of Barbara and the kids that I blasted it all over the neighborhood...twice! The hits sound just as good as ever. "Hair" never sounds right coming from anyone else---it just doesn't if you grew up with The Cowsills' version. "The Rain, The Park And Other Things" is still as glittering as rain through sunlight, and "Indian Lake" is just plain fun! (Tell me with a straight face that the war whoop doesn't make you giddy)! It's a pity that this one doesn't have the "Love, American Style" theme, but they make up for it with "Poor Baby" and "Gray, Sunny Day."

4-0 out of 5 stars Not The '80s VH-1 Wants You To Remember
If you were a complex multi-celled being in the early '80s (i.e., more than just a sperm and egg), you probably recall "A Million Miles Away," the most ubiquitous radio and movie soundtrack (Valley Girl, The Last American Virgin) hit from The Plimsouls. But like The Knack, Cheap Trick and other guitar rock bands lost in the sea of synthy '80s new wave, The Plimsouls were best heard live. So here's your chance until the boys down in the lab get the flux capacitor into the Delorean to send you back to 1981.

4-0 out of 5 stars What does your rant have to do with THIS RECORD?
This is the long-overdue cd issue of the plimsouls live album.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best live albums...EVER
In the 1983 film "Valley Girl" Nicholas Cage's character slams a Valley girl for what he describes as her love of "gutless" music. It is only appropriate that Cage's dialogue happens to be delivered as one of the world's greatest live bands plays in the background. And just what was the name of that decidedly non-gutless band helping Cage make his point? Why it was The Plimsouls, of course! The Plimsouls have two excellent 'scenes' in 'Valley Girl' and it is from this film that most people outside of L.A. became aware of the group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable!
I bought this album in 1981. I was 15, and "Healing" was one of the very first albums I bought with my own money. That's how crazy I am! And I liked it then, just as I like it now. No matter how many times I hear it, I am still taken by surprise due to its uniqueness and originality. There is no other album quite like it. It does have something in common with its predessessor, the excellent "Hermit Of Mink Hollow", but it's also very different. I like to think of "Hermit" as DAY and "Healing" as NIGHT. 5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE MANY UNDERRATED TR MASTERPIECES!
When it comes to talk about Rundgren's music,it's alwaysreferred to with the same items :A WIZARD...,SOMETHING...Well,I'm OK with that but the truth is I really can't understand the reason why HEALING is never talk about as one of his best albums along with WIZARD(my all time favorite by the way).Yet it's an amazing disc, and for me,the best production job he ever did .It has a feeling no other number of his discography matches and that really means a lot!Music of unknown origin! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wall of sound, Hollies anyone?
Incredible sophmore effort...Singing and arranging was breath taking. For those who thought melody was dead and longed for another "Lets Active" release, this filled the bill. Any songwriter would love to have voices like these to sing their songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Severely underestimated and overlooked
In my opinion, The Posies are one of the '90s most underestimated and overlooked bands. Although they maintained significant support in the Seattle area and in Europe and Japan, for one reason or another they were never fully discovered in the United States. Dear 23 is their 2nd release (first professionally recorded release) and came to be the single-most influential album in my life throughout the '90s and still to this day. This album has a wonderful melancholy feel throughout. The tracks flow beautifully from one track to the next, ending with "Flood of Sunshine" which begins at a slow crawl and builds continually, climbing to the height of the album, then quickly subsides to a single sustained note that fades into perfect silence. The quality of the lyrics are second to none, they are intelligent and well composed. "Golden Blunders" (track #2) which received limited airplay on MTV (which is where I first heard of The Posies), is a catchy power-pop tune, once I heard it, I was hooked. I've since purchased all of The Posies' albums and I have seen them live at least 9 times in Seattle. My favorite tracks on this album are: "Golden Blunders" "Apology" "Any Other Way" "Help Yourself" "Everyone Moves Away" and of course "Flood of Sunshine". I have given this ablum as a gift to numerous friends, all of which claim to love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic album
I can't say enough about this album, or "Frosting on the Beater" for that matter. Funny enough, the first song I heard from the Posies was "I can dream all day" (from "FOtheB") and I was not in the mood for 60's-Summer of Love-ish pop given the grunge revolution that was unfolding. On further review, that song is OK but there are at least a dozen songs on these two albums in particular that are even better. Beautiful but hardhitting. I saw one review that called the Posies "near-perfect" power-pop, which sums it up, I think. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Todd Rundren's Liars is perfection.
Todd Rundgren has been one my favorite artists for over 30 years. He has always challenged me to feel and think through his music.Liars is a compilation of beautiful harmonies and sweet, soulful vocals. It has a mesmerizing quality that improves with each listen.Todd's biting wit and compelling wisdom is ever present. He hooks you with such beautiful songwriting while he challenges you to look inside yourself for the truth and God.He cuts to the bone at times.Time has not diminished Todd's edge.He is an inspiration and shines such a bright light in a dim world.Liars may be his best work to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of Rundgren's better albums, and that is no lie
Devotees of the Artist Formerly Known as TR-I know that membership in the "Todd is Godd" cult is a risky business. It seems that in order to receive the multi-faceted power pop gems with their literate and often highly spiritual lyrics, we've agreed to accept the prog inanity of "A Treatise on Cosmic Fire." To call Todd's '90s musical output "iffy" would be overly generous; his forays into rap, lounge, and techno alienated increasing numbers of cult followers with each release. Even the finest cuts from 2000's hit-or-miss One Long Year could not dispel the suspicion that Todd's future days should be spent behind the producer's console instead of the microphone. This all makes his newest album so satisfying.
4-0 out of 5 stars Why no song samples?
I'm a long time Todd fan going back to Runt.He lost me in the 90's, actually he lost me after Faithful.I'm interested in this new CD since the general consensus seems to be that this is a good CD. So, I'm interested and then go to the song samples. And I realize there are no song samples.Sure song samples really mean little but at least you can get some idea of what is going on in the music. But there are no song samples here and I gotta wonder why.Sorry about a BS ranking if this really is a 5 star CD. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to a career
This album introduced Todd Rundgren to the music world as more than just the guitarist/writer for the short-lived Nazz. These songs span most of the varied genres Todd was to explore over the next several decades:Silky soul tunes; guitar-driven rock; and even the silly "artsy-fartsy" stuff are on display.Ably assisted by the Sales brothers this sonically lean collection is a must for anyone who appreciates the limitless scope of real popular music.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEGINNING AND WHAT A START!
Todd's first solo outing from 'the Nazz wherever' and it is a gem. From the rocky 'broke down and busted'(a mainstay of his early gigs) to the masterful 'we've gotta get you a woman' and the Zappa-ish 'i'm in the clique' this is a real delight. Todd's guitar is way out front and there is none of the pondering excursions of the latter Utopia stuff. Now what i want to know is whwn is Todd going to release the alternate 'Runt' album that slipped through when it came first came out (only in the USA) with the medley split into seperate tracks, the different songs and different mixes. I'm tired of going to record fairs in a neverending search to find a copy (fifteen years and still searching) the album looks the same so you have to check the vinyl. Having heard the extra tracks i won't stop trying (they're superb) but hey Todd save my patience and just release the bloody thing!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Early Todd
After the Nazz disbanded, Todd went solo. Well, kinda. He didn't go completely solo until 1972's "Something/Anything?", but for all intents and purposes, this is his first solo album.

Marshall Crenshaw's self-titled debut arrived at a time whenpost-New Wave rockers were examining the music of past decades andadapting its sounds and attitudes to their own. Crenshaw's dead-onmelodic sensibility, empathetic lyrics, and deeply ingrained sense ofpop structure and sound made the record 1982's best. 5-0 out of 5 stars Should get 10 stars!
This album is almost 25 years old, and it still sounds fresh. They don't make 'em like this anymore. This is straight ahead, pure, no b.s. rock and roll. In a perfect world, any of the 12 songs from the original debut could've been a number one hit. Mr. Crenshaw makes it look so easy, but writing simple, catchy songs is still a difficult thing to do. These songs will stay in your head FOREVER. My favorites are "There She Goes Again", "Girls...", "Rockin' Around in NYC", "Cynical Girl", "Mary Anne", and "Brand New Lover". 5-0 out of 5 stars An essential Rock & Roll album for any collection
Marshall Crenshaw brings back the loveliness of 50's rock & roll with the pop rock of the 80's and he does it extremely well. Each song on this album is a rock & roll gem, with very good lyrics, Marshall's trademark voice and a great hook. Soem of the songs are a little cheesy (especially "Girls..."), but the pros far outweigh the cons. The lyrics are always fun and meaningful, and you'll probably catch yourself singing along to a couple of the tracks. The musicianship and production are great, especially for the time period. One of the best albums of the 80's and one of the best of all time, "Marshall Crenshaw" is pure fun and a definite must-have for any music fan.
5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant
Marshall Crenshaw is one of the very few artists/bands to NEVER play a bad tune.It really surprises me that Marshall Crenshaw hasn't sold a billion records and doesn't have at least 5 top ten hits. The music is unique and the tunes are catchy.THIS IS EASY is 22 straight melodic/rockin tunes you can listen to straight through without skipping a track.I don't know anyone who doesn't like Marshall Crenshaw's music and Crenshaw's live shows are awesome by the way.I suggest you catch this band while you can, they are the last of a dying breed. ... Marshall Crenshaw never again scored the commercial success he saw with his acclaimed 1982 self-titled debut, but he kept the knack for writing melodically rich, evocative, touching songs. 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Compliation
Marshall Crenshaw does make it seem easy, doesn't he? His songwriting and lyrical abilities complement each other fine and the result is work that always seems fresh and original...no matter how many times I listen. I tnink the fact that he is able to deliver a pop-rock sound with substance and a signature sound is what separates him from his peers. This compilation exhibits this and further adds fuel to the Crenshaw reputation that still is prominate in musically educated circles.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best stuff on his first two albums
This disc reveals clearly that Crenshaw shot his creative wad on his first two albums, "Marshall Crenshaw" and "Field Day." After that he maintained his pleasant and distinctive sound, but the songs were mostly echoes. The songs from those early discs deserve 4 and 5 stars, but the rest get 1 or 2 stars.

Big City Rock may have just given us the perfect pop record of the year. Although the 10-song album clocks in at just 35 minutes, not one second of that time is wasted. The Los Angeles quintet moves seamlessly between a night in Clubland ("All Of The Above") to a naked heart conversation ("I Believe In You") to a fun romp that takes you back to the height of 60’s soul ("Kind"). Along the way there's a dash of slacker humor ("Sink"), a moving call for peace ("Shelter") and an unapologetic love song ("A Better Place"). If listeners at times think of latter-day U2, it's probably no surprise as Big City Rock shares a knack for creating almighty pop songs absent of unnecessary ornamentation and full of a wide range of genuine emotions. A true contender for the American pop crown.––Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars All Of The Above
While it's true that anything labeled "power-pop" is going to compel me to try it, I've also grown wary of how music is always shunted into one of various sub-genres -- it can be misleading, and I end up being disappointed when I don't like one band, or worse yet I end up missing a really good band altogether. So I try my best to ignore the sub-genre labels ... but I'm glad I didn't this time, and gave this one a chance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable listening and good sound
I first heard the band Big City Rock when they opened for a Jason Mraz concert. My first impression was that they were very loud (and not quite what I was expecting, since they don't sound like Mraz at all) but the songs were good and the few ones they played actually stuck with me. I didn't just forget them right when they were done, which is the sign of a good song to me. So after the show I bought the CD and the band members were all hanging around and they all signed my CD, and they seemed very friendly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Like a MUCH better Killers...
I was very skeptical of Big City Rock, right off the bat.I first heard the record as a generic Atlantic advanced promo with no cover, and it sounded good, but I wasn't sure what to expect. With a name like BCR, you would think bloated, generic, heavy metal monsters, not the sound this band has.The first song "Sink" had my immediate attention, as it's ultracatchy new-wavish powerpop of the highest quality.I mean, cool quick verse with Nate Bott sounding like a better Brandon Flowers on a better-crafted tune.THEN, a catchy PRE-chorus of sinking to the bottom of the ocean and kissing the feet (and a**es) of businessmen, and that would have been fine, but NO, then the REAL chorus of "That's how far I'd go...".Kinda genius really...

5-0 out of 5 stars Pete Ham and the boys create a classic
For a short time Badfinger filled the void left by the breakup of the Beatles. "No Dice" and the following album "Straight Up" are classic pop albums that had the harmony, melodic sense, energy and feeling that were the hallmark of the best of the Beatles music. While the Beatles had Lennon and McCartney Badfinger only had one great singer songwriter-Pete Ham. The other members wrote and sang but it was Ham who provided the group with the best songs and the most inspired vocals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sparkling power-pop solo debut
As half of the Dwight Twilley group, drummer-singer-songwriter Seymour helped create two of the greatest albums of the late-70s power-pop renaissance, "Sincerely" and "Twilley Don't Mind." After departing from the group, Seymour did some woodshedding with Tom Petty (those are his backing vocals on "American Girl" and "Breakdown," for example), 20/20 and Moon Martin before signing with Neil Bogart's Boardwalk Records for this 1980 debut.

I ordered this from Amazon.com since I'm in the UK and this title wasn't available from Amazon UK. It took about 2 weeks to arrive and was worth the wait. As other customers have said, as a rule Lennon/Beatles cover songs aren't much good at all but this CD is a notable exception.

I got this disc at a used CD shop in town for six dollars, I wasn't expecting much, as most of the Lennon cover/tributes i've heard were pretty lacking. I was dead wrong. There is only one bad cover on this dics, every other is great!3-0 out of 5 stars An OK tribute to Lennon
I must admit that the reason I bought this CD is because I'm a fan of John Lennon and of the grunge scene of the early 1990's.So needless to say, I enjoyed the cover of "I Don't Want To Be A Soldier" by Mad Season (LAYNE STALEY'S VOCALS ARE ALWAYS AMAZING) and "Steel and Glass" by Candlebox, but for me the best track was "Working Class Hero" by The Screaming Trees.Mark Lanegan's voice is unbelievable and this cover is closest in my opinion to the original in quality.A pleasant surprise were Mary Chapin Carpenter's surprisingly good cover of "Grow Old With Me" and the cover of "How Do You Sleep" by The Magnificent Bastards.Collective Soul does a very good cover of Jealous Guy.Now, on to the bad.No surprise The Red Hot Chili Peppers would be found here with their cover of "I Found Out", I never liked "Power To The People", so I was going to skip it anyway, but The Minus Five didn't do all that bad with it.It actually shocked me that an established band like Cheap Trick couldn't pull off "Cold Turkey".Read more

Editorial Review

Onetime working-class dog Rick Springfield has kept his nose to the grindstone since his early-80s "Jessie's Girl"/"General Hospital"/Tiger Beat-centerfold heyday. It seems as though he's realized he's making as big of a dent in the national consciousness as former co-stars Luke and Laura. Thus Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Job!
Though I'm still waiting for a cd w/ all-Rick-penned songs, I really enjoy this cd. I like all of the covers. I especially like "I'm Not In Love," "Holding on to Yesterday," "Waiting for a Girl Like You," "Let's Go Out Tonight" & "Miss You Nights." But my fave from this cd is the only "new" song & the only one writen by Rick, "Cry."
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Addition to my Rick Springfield collection
I am a huge Rick Springfield fan. So this CD is a really nice change for me. They are all songs that I already know. It is great to hear his renditions of these songs. It is also nice to know that these are some of his favorite songs as well. He ROCKS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rick at his "best yet"..
great covers..

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic garage rock with a punk feel
The Exploding Hearts were a bunch of young kids playing a musical style twice their age but you wouldn't know that from their flawless recreation of the sounds of the classic rock n' roll/garage movement of the late 60's. Despite their youth, there's a timeless feel to their modern take on this genre as they belt through a series of rock n' roll originals that surely would have been chart toppers in that era. Helping this out is the absolutely retro straight out of the amp, fuzzy around the edges guitars and a strict adherence to blues based rock songwriting but with a superb flair for writing memorable songs that stick out from the considerable amount of bands playing this style past and present. They also incorporate some of the energy of the early British punk movement, keeping things moving at a brisk pace that keeps the interest level high from start to finish.
5-0 out of 5 stars they could have been big......
Most people who adore the Exploding Hearts have the secret of this wonderful album kept. This may be a good thing, because it is cool for bands to have a cult following, espacially as good as this. I am sure that the Exploding Hearts could have been popular, but I think it would be harder to enjoy their music if they were. At least we are lucky enough to have an album like this. God bless the Exploding Hearts.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really have never met anyone who didn't like them.
Every kid I've shown this band to either immediately fell in love with their incredible garagey power-pop sound or sheepishly added them to their 'favorites' list a few days later.

3-0 out of 5 stars A victory for "Victoria'.
This disc was released as a benefit for "Victoria Williams", but I feel like I've benefited from it myself as well. Her songs are all good, but the group of musicians covering them is even better. "Pearl Jam" probably got the most people to buy this, however I like the songs done by "Soul Asylum", "Evan Dando", "Waterboys", and "Lucinda Williams" just as much. "The Jayhawks" and "Matthew Sweet" do a good job too. Basically it's just a really good bunch of music. Also, there's currently 121 used copies on here for sale, so it shouldn't be too hard to come by.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some missteps, but not bad

5-0 out of 5 stars blast from the past
I admit I am turning into one of these older guys who get completey obnoxious when they start simmering about the past....however when it comes to guitar rock, catchy tunes and great lyrics these guys from down under still do it for me1

4-0 out of 5 stars Great hooks and a lot of humor (and a little pain)
The Gurus' pound out these songs with booming, tribal-like drums, walls of acoustic guitar chords, massive, anthemic choruses, and Dave Faulkner's strong lead vocals. Underneath this mountain of sound lie the band's catchy tunes, the best of which, "I Want You Back", has enough hooks for a meat locker.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Surf Movie Soundstrack ever.
Anyone that grew up surfing in the early 80's will remember the surf movie "Beyond Blazing Boards" and the sounds that went with it. Outside of the song "Wild Child" by The Untouchables this is the movie sound track. I Was A Kamikaze Pilot, was the wipeout segment song and to this
