Editorial Review

Even the musical wasteland that was the '80s did offer up a few beacons of hope, and LA power-poppers the Plimsouls were one of them. Granted, they're primarily known for one song, "A Million Miles Away," one of the decade's musical highlights, but they had a lot more good material up their sleeve. "Shaky City," the title track, and "Play the Breaks," also stand out, and the quality never dips below wonderful. Led by Peter Case, they coulda been contenders; certainly their wiry pop music was appealing enough. For one reason or another, it never happened. But time has finally caught up with them (and that perfect song), and the world is finally ready for the Plimsouls. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Plimsoles: Everywhere At Once
Had this on vinyl for forever- it's awesome to find it on CD for so cheap!

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth owning but certainly not the best of the Plimsouls
First, I have to take offense at the remarks made in the Amazon "product Description" by Chris Nickson... I quote; "Even the musical wasteland that was the '80s did offer up a few beacons of hope". Chris Nickson is obviously a moron who knows nothing about "80's" music. The 80's were a powerhouse decade for music in many ways. What other decade was there in which you had hits by artists from the previous 3 decades right along side those by the "new" artists? Roy Orbison, Kinks, Moody Blues, Rolling Stones, George Harrison, etc. All had huge hits on the same charts as U2, Duran Duran, Go-Go's, Devo, Stray Cats, Romantics, R.E.M etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great band, great CD!
I found out about the Plimsouls by watching Valley Girl. I really liked "A Million Miles Away" and the other songs featured in the movie, so I decided to buy the soundtrack. I just happened to come across this CD for $5.99 on Amazon and couldn't pass it up, even though I was planning to buy it anyway. I like all of the songs on this CD. I definitely recommend this CD whether you already like the Plimsouls or are just discovering them. ... Read more

Editorial Review

With most comprehensive Raspberries' hits collections out of print as of 2005 and the band set to reconvene for a summer tour, Capitol dusts off its tapes and issues this sturdy but unimaginative overview. Those who already own one of the previous best-of sets won't need to spring again for this generous 20 track, nearly 80 minute rarity and B-side-free set. That said, anyone new to the 70s power pop band's Beatle-esque charms will delight in hearing these songs. Eric Carmen's distinctive voice effectively combines McCartney's cutesy charisma with Lennon's more cynical edge, and his tunes, while not as revolutionary or innovative as the Fab Four's, sure make for some hummable retro listening. This go-round adds "I Can Remember," an ambitious eight minute, string-enhanced suite not found on most of the band's compilations and it is a welcome addition. Lesser known but defining album tracks like the enticing "Nobody Knows" share space with more popular tunes from the band's four discs, providing an excellent career summation of the quartet's short (1972-'75) yet productive run. From the opening blast of "Go All the Way," to the closing Phil Spector-styled mega-production of the bite-the-hand-that-feeds epic "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)," The Raspberries' music blasts out of the speakers with a surly, confident pop authority that few other groups--English or American--ever achieved. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD!
I own all the Raspberries CD's and records. This is one of my favorites of all of the more than 400 CD's that I own. There is no better guitar player than Wally Bryson and there is no better voice than Eric Carmen. Also great are Dave Smalley and Jim Bonfonti. One of the best songs ever is GO All THE WAY! The beginning of that song sends shivers down my spine. Great CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars These Raspberries are Sweet!
I love this CD!I had forgotten how much fun they are to listen to, and how talented they were. I'm glad to hear they're touring again, and hope they come around my way.I haven't stopped listening to this since I bought it about a month ago!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good 1970s Pop-Rock
This type of rock flew against the prevailing musical trends of the early-mid 70s. Not prog rock or metal, but concise, catchy pop songs. If you like The Raspberries and Badfinger, be sure to check out the best of them all, Big Star. #1 Record/Radio City (1972/1973) belong in every rock collection, right next to those other groups, and any others that matter at all. ... Editorial Review

The mid-70s belonged to a group of hopelessly plaid Scotsmen who named themselves after a northern Michigan resort town. With an affect on fans that resembled Beatlemania in terms of screaming, fainting, and pledges of undying love, the Bay City Rollers enjoyed a string of U.K. pop hits along with modest American success. In retrospect, the band's music is still sugary enough to give listeners a toothache; however, there is a certain charming innocence to tunes like "Saturday Night," "Summer Love Sensation," and (of course) "Shang-a-Lang." Boy-band nostalgia, anyone? Read more

The Bay City Rollers are what is played when one goes to meet Satan and you also have to sit next to Brataney Sneers and Justa Stinkercake. Saturday Night was these bozos' only hit. Editorial Review

The second record from this Minneapolis trio firmly established them as one of the most promising hard-edged pop bands to surface in the 1990s. The leadoff track, the modern rock radio hit "Closing Time," neatly encapsulates everything that makes Semisonic special, from its irresistibly catchy chorus to an ingeniously minimalist keyboard riff to a simple lyric that speaks volumes to the 20-something nightclubbing set. Elsewhere, the band broadens its base with touches of psychedelic production ("California"), boogie-woogie- influenced piano ("Never You Mind") and tender string accompaniment ("Gone to the Movies"). The disc drags a bit in the middle with less memorable tracks such as "Completely Pleased" and "This Will Be My Year," but overall, Read more

This CD pretty much contains every memory of the year it came out that I have. It's wonderful to just listen to on repeat while crashed out on the floor of your best friends' room while discussing everything and nothing at all.I love the ambience of the disk, and would recommend it to anyone at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars 1990s Sleeper Hit****
Something you have to understand about this reviewer is I like to dabble a lot in weird types of music; psychedelic, prog rock, indie rock, jam bands, Southern Rock.I consider bands like Radiohead, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie, Porcupine Tree, and The Shins to be some of the best bands of the 2000's.It's also interesting to note that above everything else, I'm a pop-rock fan.I grew up with 90's music. If it's not catchy, I'm not interested. For my money, the 90's was the best decade for music; Toad the Wet Sprocket, REM, Live, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
This has become one of my favorite CDs. This is a band with that all to rare combonation of instrumental, lyrical AND vocal talents. It has a pace perfect for a Saturday Morning. It'll get your butt out of bed and put a grin on your face. It's clever, upbeat and most certainly catchy. What a find! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Collection of Guitar Instrumentals
This second volume of the SOUNDS OF WOOD & STEEL series is a simply wonderful album of guitar instrumentals. As with the previous volume, each song features Taylor guitars (which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1999 when this CD was released).
5-0 out of 5 stars great stuff!
What's not to like about this compilation? I'm not at all sure why some reviewers were "disappointed" by this cd. I'm thrilled to have so many leads to all of this talent. One shouldn't expect to like every tune on a cd such as this, because there are so many different styles, but I feel that the producers did an amazing job keeping the tone very similar, so that one can enjoy this cd from beginning to end. Keep in mind, too, that this type of music is designed to be background for reading, or writing a letter, or doing a puzzle, or studying, or just relaxing. It's SUPPOSED to be unobtrusive. It's not supposed to be mindblowing or alter your consciousness. It's just supposed to set a mood and help you mellow out, and it certainly does that artfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars I never thought I'd like a latter-dayUtopia album through and through!
This album is so great (considering Utopia's power-pop/rock side, not the earlier prog side), that any attempt at a retrospective of their career pales comparing to this single album. And that's saying a lot.
5-0 out of 5 stars New Wave Todd
Todd went through many phases, both individually and with Utopia. Here he dons the new wave duds, the two-tone attitude, and shows he can do power pop/new wave as well as anybody who's ever attempted it.Too bad poor promotion and releasing this after the brilliant but obtuse Deface the Music pretty much meant Todd, once again, killed the buzz.As another reviewer mentioned, they limped off with two ok but not great albums, never to have reached the summit that seemed quite attainable after the well-received Adventures....
5-0 out of 5 stars The most mainstream pop of Utopia - four-part vocal harmonic bliss!
I own Todd and Utopia's complete catalogue, and this particular album is their most mainstream pop rock of them all. This collection is a particular favorite in that after repeated listenings, I learned to appreciate all sixteen tracks, which is very unusual for me.

Editorial Review

From the time of their full-throttled 1977 debut (whose shredded, punky demeanor often foreshadowed grunge rock by nearly a decade-and-a-half), Cheap Trick has arguably been one of most resilient and influential (Billy Corgan and Steve Albini have variously sung their praises one side side of the generation gap, John Lennon and Jeff Beck on the other), if critically underappreciated bands of the last three decades. While the Budokan-mania and "Yardbirds play Abba" (in bassist Tom Petersson's estimation) pop of"I Want You to Want Me" will be instantly familiar thanks to their classic rock warhorse status, those unfamiliar with the band's true range and enduring live power (paid ample tribute by stage versions of "Gonna Raise Hell" and a Billy Corgan-guesting "Mandocello" from '98, and the dramatic "Hard to Tell" from their 25th anniversary live show of '99) will find this collection a revelation. Spanning the decidedly mixed blessing of their sole #1 hit "The Flame" and the latter day indie-label exile that's nonetheless produced two of their strongest collections (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the essentials, and then some
The Essential Cheap Trick is a fine compilation with both the classics ("Surrender," "I Want You To Want Me," "The Flame" etc...) and a lot of really great songs that aren't as widely played in the mainstream and have been somewhat forgotten (of these I recommend "Tonight It's You" and "This Time Around," which is a really beautiful song.) This album covers a period of almost thirty years in the history of one of rock's best kept secrets. It is refreshing and a real treat, and I highly recommend it for both the old fans and the newly curious alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent!!!
This album gives you the best of both worlds. It gives you the famous/most played favorites (Surrender and I Want You to Want Me [Live]), but also gives you a wonderful combination of other songs that are less played at concerts and other venues (Auf Wiedersehen and ELO Kiddies [Singles Version]).These tracks are interspersed between the other tracks . But then, there are those "rockin' middle ones" (Hello There and ELO Kiddies [Singles Version]). This clean cut system adds up to one rockin' album!

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost essential.
Sony came close to compiling the best of Cheap Trick, but they included some songs I'd have left off and omitted some tracks I'd have included. So, if you're like me, and you have most everything from Cheap Trick, my suggested compilation would be the following.

Editorial Review

It's hard to imagine that this album's bleak-spirited songs, grinding modern rock tack, and contemporary production aura are all the products of a musician who scored his first American chart hit in 1972, then was written off again a decade later after a string of MTV-fueled hits--including the classic "Jessie's Girl." But this is indeed the same Rick Springfield, his former bubblegum-rock incarnation belied by a tough musical stance that would be the envy of many a rocker half his age. But one doesn't have to dissect the slinky, eastern-inflected guitar hooks and fat, thumping bass of the wry "Jesus Saves" (chorus: "Jesus saves white trash, baby like you") very far to find that Springfield's songwriting instincts remain rock-solid. It's just as surprising to find that this self-produced album is the product of ears that have been anything but dormant in recent years, and savvy--or is it idealistic?--enough to turn a spunky, thrashed-up take of the Easybeats' 60's jewel "I'll Make You Happy" into a bridge across the generations. Cynical ears may mistake it all for a pose; if so it's an acting job the former soap opera star should be proud of. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best album
sitting here in edinburgh, scotland 11.00pm,a few beers later and i stick on this cd again. now i love hard rock from the usual suspects but this cd is immense from a guy who used to be a teen idol!!.some of the big guns should listen to this and rethink their strategy.please bring this show to g.b. rick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful!!
This cd is completely amazing!I truly wish Rick would incorporate this into his concerts more than he does.He does sing "Jesus Saves White Trash" while he comes out into the crowd and I love it, but every time I'm at a show I think "Please sing Perfect, please sing I Don't Want Anything, please just sing one more song from that beautiful, wonderful album!!!"I have to play this cd all day long - anytime I get the chance, it's on.When we leave the house, by 3 year old asks "Mom, did you bring Rick?"He won't let me leave this cd at home when it can instead be in the car with us.My 15 year old daughter tells her friends "he's this guy from the 80s, but he still rocks pretty hard."Again, you WILL NOT be disappointed in this wonderful work of art that Rick has created. It's extremely beautiful...

5-0 out of 5 stars Rick Springfield Still Rocks!!!
This CD is truly an incredible collection of Rick's new stuff.I can listen to him over and over again!Definitely more hard core than his 80s music. His kick butt track "Jesus Saves" will blow you away and is worth every cent paid!He still rocks!!!Highly recommend this one!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap Trick at Budokan
Buy the time Cheap Trick recorded at Budokan, they were more or less superstars over in Japan. While their first three albums didn't burn up the charts in the U.S., in Japan they were hits, that went gold. Live at Budokan was originally going to be released in Japan only, but when a couple of DJ's got a hold of imports, and started playing I Want You to Want Me, people started to become interested in Cheap Trick at Budokan and were forking over the big bucks to buy the import. In 1979 Epic records decided to release it here in America, and hold back the release of Dream Police. At Budokan is a great album, because it captures the magic of Cheap Trick in concert, there's a lot more energy in the songs and performances than the album versions. Live, Cheap Trick has something they just can't capture on their albums. Currently they have Cheap Trick at Budokan the complete concert, I would recommend springing for the double disk set instead of this version. Both are great!

5-0 out of 5 stars A piece of history
Yeah, it is not sound recording excellence, nor the greatest sounding performance. It grows on you, and you keep comming back to it.You will probably never admit you like it around your friends.I can imagine life without Surrender. One of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic, but you can now do better
I remember when this came out, I'd already had a radio only promo that I'd found in a store that always managed to get records like that. I was blown away by the ferocity of it, with power beyond anything the studio albums had come up with. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers: Meh. Originals: OMGZ!!!!!!!!!!!
"Faithful" is half covers, half new songs. Unfortunately, the point of the covers seemed to be for Todd to show off his studio wizardry. He tries to perfect them note-for-note, and does a good job. I'm not bashing them, but I've never been big on covers albums to begin with.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant on MANY levels!
Rundgren was on a roll like no other Rocker throughout the entire 70's!While he is still, in my opinion, very relevent in 21st Century music, Something/Anything, Wizard, Todd, Faithful and Hermit (his solo recordings circa 1972/1978)ALL are Five Star records!
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't You Ever Learn?
So many folks don't get it about side 1 of this album. It wasn't just a tribute, or the whole project would have been covers. The point is, Todd was always capable of doing anything anyone else did. That's why he was successful in working in the studio with such a diverse group of artists. At the same time he needed to express himself in his own unique style, all the while tryin' to make a living off an L.P.'s worth of tunes. "Faithful" is still one of my favorite efforts by an oft misunderstood genius. Don't judge it just enjoy it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Band was so bad, singer killed himself
This band's stated agenda was to create good old pop music, the kind you used to hear on the radio in the 1960s and 1970s. Unfortunately, their execution was lacking. Their singer and songwriter had next to no talent. His best work was singing with Liz Phair on a cover of "Turning Japanese." And even that was hollow and soulless. Then he killed himself and nobody cared except maybe close personal friends and relatives, but maybe not even them if they'd heard this record. It's that bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Material Issue was a Chicago band who wrote some of the most killer 3 minute power pop songs! themes of love and girls are dominant (at least 6 different girl's names are sung about in the lyrics). the music is strong and full of hooks and hummable choruses that pack their weight in radio gold. this album spawned a few college hits if i remember correctly. this comes highly recommended for fans of Cheap Trick, Big Star, or Field Trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Chicago classic
Material Issue may have been the best pure band out of the Chicago scene that spawned Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, and Urge Overkill, among many others. It's great three minute, three chord rock and roll, wearing Jim Ellison's heart and influences on its sleeve.Contrary to one of the other reviews, MI did not disband.Ellison killed himself, a tragic loss for pop music. But that is not why to buy this album:buy it for the life that courses through Ellison's songs and his band's performances, not for the sad way his life ended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just buy this CD if you like good music.
I have all Van Morrison's records from the era when LP's were king. I have this CD in my auto and it has not been out for over a week. The songs get better each time I hear them. This is just plain great music. I hate to say it but they have made the original versions lose something. Buy this if you love good American music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done!
My local record store was having a buy 3 get 4 sale on CDs this week. I've been anxiously awaiting the release of Ray Charles' "Genius Loves Company" so I made a trip to get that CD (which I love, by the way). One of the other purchases to get to my "buy 3" was "Vanthology." It has been on my 'get' list for several months, but not one needing a special trip -- at least I thought it didn't.
4-0 out of 5 stars Why didn't anyone do this before?
This is a natural. It's great to hear soulful singers reinterpret these classic Van tunes, and emphasize the blues/soul/gospel influences inherent to Van's music. Many of these artists are getting on in years (as are many of Van's fans!)and rarely top Van's own versions, but they convey a real feeling for the form. Many of us have been disappointed by less than stellar "tribute" albums ("Blues on Blonde" comes to mind)but I think any Van fan would respond to this.A solid, diverse collection: great songs, great singing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best Old 97's but not the worst either
Having lived in Nashville at the time of the country alternative explosion in the 90's, the Old 97's were one of the later bands to come from that time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the negativity, buy this album
This is simply great stuff.Whether you want to call it power pop, alternative country, or whatever, it is great stuff."Buick City Complex" and "Designs On You" are brilliant. While I would agree that this album isn't as tight as Too Far To Care, it is still a great rock and roll album.Don't bother putting a tag on the 97's, they transcend titles. They rock and boogie and country. It's simply American music.Rhett Miller is a very strong song writer, and he carries the band well.Hooks, choruses, solid beat, nifty guitar breaks, and enthusiastic singing. What else matters?Give me that "Roller Skate Skinny," let's rock.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reminds me of Wilco's poppier moments
This is my first contact with the Old 97's so I can't compare to other releases which I gather leaned harder to the alt-country sound than this one. The frequently chiming guitars and singalong choruses on many of the songs here make me think of it as more "power pop" than alt-country, though there's enough twang still in evidence to see their roots. "Designs on you" is about a 50/50 synthesis of twang and pop.

5-0 out of 5 stars radio stinks
I say that because you will never hear this excellent gem of an album on commercial radio. Actually, radio has sucked since the late 80's. Since this is not a review of radio all I can say is follow amazon's reviews by fellow music lovers and trust them. Buy this album and then try Under The Covers with Suzanne Hoffs. And please turn off your radio as it is filled with what the music industry wants you to hear, not this great stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Matthews Sweetest
I own over five thousand CDs, Tapes and Records. This is my all time absolute favorite. I was in my early twenties when this came out. I don't know how many cracks I put on the steering wheel of my 74 Chevy Nova banging my fists to this album. The title track is great and gets you right into the record. He just plays great down home, grass roots rock and roll. No extra crap. Some of the songs are quite sad like You Dont Love Me and Winona. They could downright make you cry. Thank God for Matthew Sweet, as he tried to singlehandedly save us all from the deeply mired heavy Seattle Sound of the early nineties.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic
Thank God. I heard Girlfriend, the single, on the radio one day about a year or two ago. That lead to a download and the purchase of the album a few days later.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MustGet
I saw this band last week at a concert and was blown away, so I got the cd.I wasn't disappointed. It is one of those cds where every track is worth listening to again and again...

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't stop playing this CD
Wow - even after listening to this 100 + times, keep cueing it back up. Extra awesome tracks: Gretchen My Captain, Special, If I Only Knew and Open Letter to the dammed. Amazing vocals and can you believe those drums???!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars great southern rock/synth/pop
i really enjoy this band. the only thing i went off of was reviews, had never heard them. bought it on a whim and was well worth it. first track blame it on the drugs is the only disappointing moment, really not a good album opener...really could have left it off all together and this would have been a 5 plus star album. as it stands, just barely a five. i'm sure more listens will change my mind. really dig the keyboards, they set this band up quite nicely. very cool jamish mentality, plus some southern rock. not really understanding the comparisons to weezer, but whatever i guess. vocal harmonies done w/ taste, lyrics a little bit crude. well worth anyone's time. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Todd throws a curve ball
"Real Man" is a terrific opening song and you would think the rest of the album will be of comparable quality and then he gets all crazy and self indulgent.. This is when Todd,I think, was crazy and thought he could do whatever he wanted. Hey Todd! Art should always have an audience and this was brutal.
5-0 out of 5 stars my fave
of all the records he's done and the myriad of styles, this is the one that sits atop the pile for me.
4-0 out of 5 stars After 31 years...a reappraisal
I bought this on vinyl back in '75.Listened to side 1 incessantly but side 2 ( the "treatise") was too daunting a task for my 18 year old ears. When I saw Todd live in Central Park that summer (check out "Another Live" for what that sounded like) and a few months later at the Beacon Theater in NYC they played exerpts from the Treatise over the PA system at the opening and during the break. It was so excessively psychedelic it frightened me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tighter, Tighter
I bought this CD for Alive And Kicking's Song "Tighter, Tighter"
3-0 out of 5 stars Have A Nice Day; Not As Good As Volumes 1 & 2 But Good !
Although this Volume 3 of the Have A Nice Day series isn't as strong from start to finish as Volume's 1 & 2 it does have it's share of outstanding Gems. Two of them are, Lay Down (Candles In The Rain), sung by Melanie; With The Edwin Hawkins Singers and, Green Eyed Lady, by Sugarloaf. The Partridge Family's, I Think I Love You, was # 1 in November 1970 and it is also here. The Legendary Jerry Reed's, Amos Moses, reached the Top 10 In March 1971 and Brian Hyland had a # 3 smash in December 1970 with, Gypsy Woman, and both of them are also here but THE highlight of this Volume 3 compilation is Alive & Kicking's, Tighter Tighter. This song was a Top 10 Hit In August 1970 and should have went to # 1 but didn't. Along with, Gypsy Woman, it is definitely my favorite on this Disc!
3-0 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Some of the Biggest Hits of 1970
That Rhino Records has kept this series in print proves that there's is still a market for these songs. And while I have at least twenty of these titles in my collection, the current crop of pay-per-download websites gives the consumer total control over song selection, making these kinds of collections more and more obsolete when you consider that you're still paying a dollar per song either way.Read more
