4-0 out of 5 stars The Pose Is Real And So Is The Music!
The Dandy Warhols are the type of band that are exactly as their image represents them to be. So basically, if the name "the Dandy Warhols" sounds like the coolest, cleverest name for a band ever, you will love their music. You'll probably also crack up at their antic-riddled articles and interviews and marvel at how people who are so talented can manage to be as sexy as Courtney, Pete, and Zia. If you don't get the name, well, you're probably just as relieved that the band is pretty obscure in the US of A. Their second album--first major label release--represents both the best and worst of what the Dandy Warhols are capable of. While, personally, I think this album has more individual standouts than the later, more renowned "Thirteen Tales of Urban Bohemia", the latter has a larger number of good, even rock songs and coheres better as an album.
5-0 out of 5 stars This album has it all too....
I only write reviews about the best of the things I find on amazon.com but to say that '13 tales of ubran bohemia' is the only awesome album put out by the Dandy's is in short blasphemy. While 13 is the apex so far this album is everything so many artists never achieve even for one song. The poppy hit is 'not if you were the last junkie on earth' but not the albums best song (I'll let you decide which is).I'll admit I'm a Portlander but this is too good to miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars I never get tired of The Dandy Warhols
What a great album!I think this CD contains most of my favorites by the Dandy Warhols..."Be-in", "Boys Better", "I Love You", "Every Day Should be a Holiday", "Green", "Hard On for Jesus"....they're all incredible!I think my absolute favorite on this album would have to be "Green".It is so enchanting and mellow.I could listen to it for hours. There is a wide variety of sounds on this album.Fast, slow, heavy, soft...you name it.The Dandy Warhols have done it.Don't miss this album. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Indulge in your 80s nostalgia
It's obvious from the long list of reviews that purists will quibble over which tracks from which artists represent their quintessential 80ness. But us ordinary folks, who just want a cross-section of the playlist from the alternate radio station we listened to in the 80s, won't care nearly as much. If you like a particular artist from this selection (and there are 82, so you probably do), you probably have several albums by that band or performer. I know I do.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent listening for '80s music junkies
This is a very comprehensive collection of all the "unheard" classics of 80's alternative/underground music scene. I use "unheard" in quotes because many of the songs were heard on college radio, independent music stations, etc. I was surprised by the inclusion of a few songs ("Message of Love" by Pretenders and "Ways To Be Wicked" by Lone Justice) as I wasn't too sure how "underground" they really were. I'm sure some more mainstream stations played them. But anyway it was really good to hear the Lone Justice song again after so many years. And I was REALLY pleased with the inclusions of "Swamp Thing" by The Chameleons and "When Love Breaks Down" by Prefab Sprout.
5-0 out of 5 stars The music that really matters.
I bought this box set when it first came out and it still holds a prominent place on my shelf and on my iPod.Broad blanket statements are often useless, but in this case, they apply: This box is the best collection of 80s college rock/alternative rock for your money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why listen to it for free when you can pay for it?
ClearChannel strikes again!First they bought up all the rights to the great classic rock bands music; then they saw to it that any NEW music those bands recorded would never see the light of day (BTO, Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, and many others are still making great records, but ClearChannel radio stations will not play them); now, they're spitting out their own Digital K-Tel compilations.
3-0 out of 5 stars Classic Rock Gold
Classic Rock "Gold" is a double disc of classic rock's best. This 2-fer does have some good songs, but it also has some awkward inclusions.I had heard of most of these songs, but there's a few that I hadn't.Somehow I don't think those few should qualify as "classic" or "gold".
4-0 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Solid Collection of Classic Rock Songs
The term "classic rock" means different things to different people. In my mind, it's that decade from 1964 to about 1975.For others, it's the decade of the Fifties. In the liner notes of this compilation, the "golden age" of Classic Rock has been defined as the FM radio era beginning in 1968 and ending in 1987. They further define a Classic Rock song as "snatching the listener out of the humdrum here and now, and taking off..."

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY IS, one of the best pop records EVER MADE
I am definitely a master of hyperbole. We admit it. So many of my reviews boldly proclaim records to be "the best ever" or "the most retarded ever" or the ever popular "most f-cked ever". The thing is, at least from where I'm sitting, there CAN be more than one "best ever", and there ARE many "most f-cked" records ever... why not? It depends on your mood, what you're doing, where you are, stereo or headphones, car or computer, happy or sad, depressed or romantic, and hell, it could be as simple as a whim. Sometimes, you feel like listening to a specific record, and for that 40 minutes, it is without a doubt, THE BEST RECORD EVER. Now, granted, some 'best records ever' are all time top 10's, while some are favorite records of the summer, and others are favorite make out records, or whatever, but all of them are awesome. For me to make that sort of proclamation, a record has to completely rule, totally kick my a--, and get the sh-t played out of it! But sometimes, it's not hyperbole. Sometimes a record ABSOLUTELY IS, one of the best pop records EVER MADE. Like Jellyfish's Spilt Milk.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great sounding record
I love this record. It picks up where "Bellybutton" left off - kicking it up a notch with Queen-style guitars and vocals. If my memory serves correctly, this was engineered by Jack Joseph Puig, which accounts for the bad-ass 70's sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spilt Milk (1993)
For those, like me, that witnessed MTV late at night, and the oft chance that you'd be able to view the video for ''The King Is Half-Undressed'' or ''That Is Why'' in 1990, Jellyfish were something new that was old that was new again, and definitely interesting. I went out and bought ''Bellybutton'' after hearing ''That Is Why'', and its remained one of my favourite albums from the 90's. Bellybutton is an auspicious debut album, filled with great pop songs, huge influences from Badfinger, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys, with a great vocalist in Andy Sturmer, and the effortless songwriting of Sturmer and Roger Manning. It was also helped by Jason Falkner on guitar. Had he stayed in Jellyfish, I'm sure he would have suffered the George Harrison Syndrome, only to emerge years later with an album as good as Bellybutton. He cut his losses and moved on right after their debut album and has had a fairly successful solo career, with much applauds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great....but could have been better.
Loved the movie.Love this soundtrack.However...one of the best moments in the movie is the big lawnmowing scene with the terrific Gene Krupa song "Drummer Man".What a travesty that the song is not on this album.I was hoping the reissue would have it but sadly, just like my original vinyl copy, the song is absent.
5-0 out of 5 stars A classic!
"IT'S GOT A PLASTIC FLYWHEEL!"Very good soundtrack to a very funny movie.A couple of the songs are real gems and the rest will take you back to the sound of the mid-80s.This CD used to sell for a pretty penny on ebay which no doubt helped prompt its re-release.Buy a copy or two before it goes out of print again.

Editorial Review

Brendan Benson is the kind of guy who still sits by the AM radio late at night, spinning the tuning dial from one end to the other in a hopeless search for the perfect pop song. Little does he know he's considerably helped his own plight by making an album full of them. Unlucky in both love and money, the Detroit singer-songwriter has plenty to chew on with his third disc. Using wistful bubblegum melodies and crisp '60s harmonies, in tunes like "Feel Like Myself" and "Cold Hands (Warm Heart)" he lashes out at former lovers and A&R men with equal venom. "I always wind up screwed without a kiss," he hisses on the Phil Spector inspired "The Pledge." But, in the end the man who counts Jack White and Beck as devoted fans, knows impending success is the best payback. "Maybe I've been caught red-handed, making off like a lucky bandit/ This wasn't how I planned it," he gloats on the title track. It's really hard to argue. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Way Overrated
This stuff isn't that good. There are a couple Cars-eque rockers that are cool but other than that I don't see what the big fuss is about? At the end of the day Benson's work is all mediocre. This is another case of "famous friends" association and hype. Save your money and pick up some classic power pop.

4-0 out of 5 stars MEGA POP INDIE MUSIC IS THE NEW HARDCORE
Oh, how I love Brendan Benson. His album Lapalco will always be my favorite, but this is probably his best. He has taken his obsession with 60's pop, a John Lennon complex, and a corky voice, and created a sound that the phrase "powerpop" doesn't even begin to describe. The vocals on this album match Pet Sounds (...almost)! I want to isolate tracks, but it's almost impossible. Everything is OBNOXIOUSLY catchy and makes me want to sit down and write a great pop song.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definately An Alternative...
The main reason i bought this cd was because i had read that it was co-produced by Jack White of the White Stripes, and that Benson would soon be starting a side-band with White. Also because Benson had fans of the likes of Beck and Jack White. I was shocked to find out that Jack had nothing to do with this cd, but pleases altogether with what i was listening to.

Editorial Review

This Santa Barbara band may look like The Jam, but they sound like surf punks with English degrees. Named after seven lesbians who lived across the hall from singer-guitarist Tim Pagnotta and dubbed themselves "sugarcult," this band fill the airwaves with their own brand of clever wretchedness, constantly veering between hardcore and pop punk, attempting to be all things to all listeners. And they come pretty close with their aerobic, bombastic drumming, nimble guitar work, and Pagnotta's sneering vocals. Luckily, they listened to enough Green Day and Elvis Costello to put a witty face on their spewing invective about dislocation, alienation, and tales of love gone bad that lands just this side of insincere.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wrapped in Plastic, cause here we come, major lable success
Some songs selected from their last independent release "Wrapped in Plastic", Sugarcult was picked up by a major label, and boom, they explode onto the world.Working their songs into soundtracks like Van Wilder and American Pie, Sugarcult took America by storm. This album is full of incredible tunes, with great hooks and melodies.Song Like "Pretty Girl", "Stuck in America" and "Bouncing Off The Walls" scream for this album to be heard and played loud. The songs are about love, life, break-ups, new relations, ect...all of what makes a good rock album.Everyone interested in Sugarcult must have this album, you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
This is actually the best cd I have ever listened to. Usually I like only a few songs on a cd, but I actually love every single song here. I'd classify the whole cd as pop-punk, but each song has an underlying musical element. Their earlier release of Wrap Me Up in Plastic, is also fabulous.

4-0 out of 5 stars ..Rock..Emo..Pop..
I looked everywhere for this CD. Over the course of 2 years I had finally found it at a Bust Buy. There was one left. I didn't really stop to think about buying it, so I just grabbed it. I put it in my CD Player and was amazed to here such good music by this band... this band i thought was just going to be another hunk of scum on the CD market. Actually, the suprise came to be that it wasn't at all. Sugarcult's Start Static has a cool kind of thing in their music.. i really dont know what there is.. but i find it similar to American Hi-Fi ( Comparing BOUNCING OFF THE WALLS to FLAVOR OF THE WEAK ) ... Anyways, majority of the songs on this CD are ' superb ' and worth buying for just the few that really stand out. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Having apprenticed with '60s band Kippington Lodge and '70s pub-rock pioneers Brinsley Schwarz, Nick Lowe became a shining beacon of traditional pop values--wit, concision, unbanishable tunes--amidst the punk furor of the late '70s. This collection is a generous 25-song single-CD selection from eight albums and a few stray singles spanning almost a decade. It may be too generous--the inclusion of a number of so-so songs and failed experiments hampers its playability. But there are still well over a dozen gems here, including his sole hit, the sparkling, textbook classic-pop masochist's anthem "Cruel to Be Kind;" the ominous voodoo breakdown "Cracking Up;" and the delightfully perverse "Marie Provost," a sumptuous power-pop tune affixed to the horrific tale of a silent-film actress who dies alone and is eaten by her starving dog. There are also at least two songs exploring Lowe's strange obsession with backstage guest lists (first single "So It Goes" and the stately "Little Hitler"), the best version of the pub-rock classic "Switchboard Susan" (containing every conceivable phone/sex double entendre), and a number of crisp rockers abetted by Rockpile, the brilliant band that, credited or not, played on much of members Lowe and Dave Edmunds's best work. 5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic compilation
This cd does a great job in sampling Nick Lowe. I was a fan of the Rockpile, Jesus of Cool and Labor of Lust albums (the 70's work). This compilation effectively takes the cream from all of the works and crams them onto a comprehensive work. There is a lot of music here. Before I bought this, I was only familiar w/the 70's work but now I have just as much of an appreciation for the 80's and 90's stuff as well. This cd does what a good compilation should do...give an overview of all the work, push the familiar and promote the new stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Parkway to Pleasure
The second (and probably least appreciated) album by Fountains of Wayne.Although there are not many chart toppers here (mainly due to the album's softer tone), I found the album very enjoyable, although if I had to pick a single FoW album to own it would be their self titled debut.Chris and Adam continue to write lyric that make me laugh (who else would you hear "We've driving.. through the Valley of Malls" from?) and put them to tunes with varied (from the psychedelia of Go Hippie to the electronica of Denise) melodies.Favorites include Red Dragon Tattoo, Troubled Times (one of prettiest relationship ending songs I think I've ever heard.. Almost make you want to break up all over again), and The Senator's Daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pop Classic
The more I listen to Fountains of Wayne, the more they amaze me. Intelligent, witty, and catchy songs, and they can play, too. Who do these guys think they are? The Beatles?

5-0 out of 5 stars Member of a rare species: the perfect pop album

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
I picked this album up at the base exchange at Torrejon AB, in Spain after hearing that Magic Christian song on the radio (don't remember the title). I must say, I loved this album though that cut from the Magic Christian was not on it. Sure, it is pop, but their guitar playing and harmonies just can't be ignored. And the quality of the songs still holds up some thirty years later.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album from the most underrated rock group ever!
Every track from this rich, warm LP blows you away. Everything from Pete Ham's and George Harrison's slide guitars on "Day After Day" to Ham's hauntingly aching "Take It All." Every rock and pop fan should pick this CD up before it slips out of print. Badfinger initially were on the Beatles' Apple Records label before they moved to Warner Brothers in 1973/74. Every album recorded by this incredibly gifted band is worth it - "Magic Christian Music," "No Dice" (which ties with "Straight Up" as the best LP, "Ass," "Badfinger," "Wish You Were Here" and "Head First." Any fan of the Beatles, The Who, Hendrix, Cream/Clapton and everyone else from the late 1960s/early 1970s should pick up Badfinger's discs. This was the band that Rolling Stone magazine said, in 1970, is the group "to watch for" in the coming years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Badfinger's Holy Grail
When I became a huge Badfinger fan, I was 15-years-old and it was 1976.My brother had gotten copies of "Magic Christian Music" and "No Dice" at a used record store, and he played the music for me. I had long heard "Come and Get It" and "No Matter What" on the radio, but I had never known who sang those songs. I was amazed when listening to "No Dice" that Harry Nilsson hadn't written "Without You", and instead it was this obscure Apple band instead. I immediately became hooked.Within months, I had copies of the albums as well, along with "Badfinger", "Ass", and "Wish You Were Here".But the Holy Grail of their music, "Straight Up" could not be found. The album was long out of print by this time, and it could not be ordered through any record store I went to.I then spent two years searching through used record bins and discount record bins, hoping that somehow this magical record had slipped unnoticed into the black hole of forgotten artists in one of those bins. When I was 17, I found two copies, priced at $2 each in a record store downtown.I clutched both of these new, still-in-shrink-wrap prizes and ran with them to the cash register, barely able to contain myself. One copy for me, and one for my brother! When I got the record home, I must have played it 1,000 times before putting it back in its sleeve. Years later, I saw a vinyl copy of "Straight Up" on sale at a Beatlesfest for over $100.At this time, 1992, it was still not available on CD.As a teenager, I had 300 or 400 albums.Through the years, they all have either been given away or discarded.Today I am 44-years-old and my Badfinger collection still remains. The music on this album is timeless."Take it All" is just as worthy for airplay as "Baby Blue", and catches your attention from the beginning. The album reminds me of the Beatles "White Album" as it is the rare album where every track is as good as the next.My person favorites are "Perfection" and "Name of the Game".Pete Ham's vocals are flawless and his lyrics haunting. If I could have only one album in my record collection, this would be it.The CD is a real treat, as it offers up different versions of songs I've loved for over 25 years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bonus material and cool liner notes
Working Class Dog was the album that made Rick Springfield an international music star. True, Rick had released albums prior to Working Class Dog, but this was the release that set him into the pop music stratosphere.Working Class Dog has been re-released after 25 years--re-mastered and with bonus tracks. Working Class Dog includes Rick Springfield's most well known hit "Jessie's Girl."Other popular songs on the album include "I've Done Everything For You," and "Love Is Alright Tonite."The best part about this re-master (in addition to the songs sounding better than ever), is that included on the CD are three bonus tracks."Easy To Cry," and the original version of "Taxi Dancing" which have not been released in the past are included. Also on the disc is the demo version of "Jessie's Girl."As for liner notes the CD includes extensive almost Q&A style album notes from Rick Springfield and people involved with the making of the album.Quite interesting reading I must say. Rick provides comments, some quite extensive for each song on the album. Also included is a reproduction of the handwritten lyrics for "Jessie's Girl."

5-0 out of 5 stars All the songs you remember.. with a twist
Great CD with songs you remember as a kid. I really got it because of the "Tra La La" Song from the Banana Splits, but all the others are great re-makes; Hong Kong Phooey, Scooby Doo, Stop the Pigeon, Fat Albert's Theme, Spiderman.. and others.

1-0 out of 5 stars JUNK
If you're looking for soundtrack recordings, DO NOT GET THIS!! It's nothing but sick, annoying, noisy, GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the young and the old!
I've had this CD since it's release! LOVED it then, still love it! I think the covers are GREAT! Better than the originals, makes for much more fun reliving the cartoons I grew up on! I had recently purchased a copy for my friends son, who LOVES it, and since has been learning to play guitar! I would like to see more CD's like this quality and caliber of bands to attract the young ones who are our future rockstars! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for FOW Fans
These two discs are as good as any FOW have done -- even if they are demos, B sides, novelty cuts and experiments."The Night I Can't Remember and the Girl I Can't Forget" is a perfect demonstration of their perfect pop sensibilities.Clever lyrics and better hooks.
5-0 out of 5 stars better than FOW's previous albums!
It's so catchy you will never stop listening to it."Never Satisfied" encompases what FOW is all about: voice, guitars and lyrics.
3-0 out of 5 stars Cull Through the Once-Culled
I'm a rabid Fountains of Wayne fan, and think that UTOPIA PARKWAY is one of the finest albums I've ever heard. (And yes, I like the band's earlier material as well.)

Editorial Review

"Rock and roll's a loser's game," goes a Mott the Hoople line borrowed for an epigram for this best-of. It invokes the story of this New Jersey band on two levels. First, these guys were smart enough to draw on slightly left-field influences while remaining sufficiently modern to gripe about the FM stranglehold of "Classic Rot." Second, like Mott's Ian Hunter, they bet big and lost big. This collection of semi-hits and obscurities might well have been titled "Work for Food." Singer John Easdale wrote that song for Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have to confess that...
I am ready to give my wife away to anyone who can bring this band in my city for a gig.
5-0 out of 5 stars Who Would've Thought......
Who would've ever thought that these guys would have a best of compilation. Well deserved for this band that put out great albums in the early '90's. I think they should've included "70's TV" and their great version of Mott's "I Wish I Was Your Mother", but let's not nitpick. "Anything, Anything" is one of the greatest rock songs of all time and I never tire of hearing it. I hope some of Dramarama's music sticks around and doesn't eventually fade into the abyss of obscurity. I'm still smoking that "Last Cigarette"

4-0 out of 5 stars Big hits, near misses.
