    Editorial Review

For those of us who grew up in the '70s, this drive-in compilation of'50s and '60s rock and doo-wop, complete with Wolfman Jack introductions, wasour introduction to this music. There are 41 jukebox hits here, and every oneof them is a classic of its time (although two tracks--"At the Hop"and "She's so Fine" are covers by the revival band Flash Cadillac &the Continental Kids). In his 1973 movie, director George Lucas used the music(and the presence of mysterious deejay Wolfman) as the AM-radio soundtrack toone night in suburban California, 1962.The idea was to capture and sustain anend-of-summer, end-of-innocence mood that's in the air throughout the picture-- not as a shortcut to establishing a period (as in Robert Zemeckis'Read more

If your a fan of Rock-a-billy or oldies this is the collection to compleate your library

4-0 out of 5 stars almost perfect
This is truly a great soundtrack. The only thing I felt slighted on was they left the song out either called "Can you dig it," or "Listen to the grass music."It is one of my favorite songs from the movie because it is so different. That is the only song I am aware they left out.Otherwise, I enjoyed that the sequence followed the movie and allowed me to conjure up images of one of my favorite flicks of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the great soundtracks of all time
This record had such an impact on my life. I got into this LP in 6th or 7th grade, after seeing the film it was based on. It was one of the first LPs I bought with my own money, and I was proud to own it. The film is great, and is perhaps my favorite movie of the 1970s. I probably watch it at least once a year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Halloween
Wow this cd sure is packed with alot of songs. Even though the songs clock in at about 2 minutes, you still get your moneys worth of musical bombardment. This would be fantastic to play in the background at any party during October. Without a record label like Buffalo Bop I never would have known or heard that so many songs like this ever even existed. These tracks, however, have cleary not been taken from the original source. It's not bad at all however. (1) I don't know where else I would obtain these songs (2) There are 30 tracks packed onto this cd. (3) I actually like the way these songs sound; kind of reminds you of the same sound quality you would hear on a bunch of '45s that you might find in your Uncles basement. Great 50s/60s Rock'N'Roll for any Halloween party. Also check out Horror Hop & These Ghoulish Things.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is The Real Deal Happy Meal, Mr. Tin Ear
Pay no mind to the ill informed review below. (NOTE: the "ill informed" review I referred to when I originally wrote this was pulled. Please do not presume I am referring to Mr. Osbourne's very fine review. Walking on the wrong grave by mistake would be a grave mistake.)These obscure gems are exactly what serious collectors of QUALITY Halloween music drool over and seek.Sick of coming across yet another insipid collection featuring "Purple People Eater," "Monster Mash," or heaven forbid - "Ghostbusters?"Yeah, really daring collections feature that kind of overplayed dross. The latter weak tea efforts are actually the kid stuff, Mr. Happy Meal. (NOTE: again, you had to have read the aforementioned pulled review). This is a mother lode of 50/60's weirdness.Rock and Roll and Rockabilly...from a time when horror movies were simple --even simple-minded -- yet cool, and not full of pretentious cerebral frosting or gratituous gore, digital hi-jinx, and received ideas for increasingly receeding imaginations.Folks who remember Famous MOnsters of Filmland; Saturday night television horror hosts; "spook show" hokum; gum on the back of uncomfortable seats (without cup-holders); Michael "Little Joe" Landon portraying a hormonally challenged teen werewolf; and the dark musty dusky stank of neighborhood movie theatres without hefty admission prices and ho-hum minimalist decor will know what I'm on about here.Dig this great volume and it's accompanying volume Horror Hop.Two of the very best - probably The BEST - compilations on the theme out there.
5-0 out of 5 stars before the Monster Mash there was monster rock n roll
If you ever wanted more than the `Monster Mash' then this CD will kick you in the teeth! It has 30 original tracks of monster songs that are pure 50's rock n roll. The cover is a colorful painting of a group of monsters (originally used for a Frank N. Stein & orchestra LP on Power Records 1964) and it comes with a 12 page booklet full of photos of some of the artists. I couldn't believe how great of a collection this is and then the label, BUFFALO BOP RECORDS in Germany released a second CD called Horror Hop with 31 more vintage monster rock n roll!Unbelievably great.$19 is cheap for what you get, 70 minutes of monster songs most of which were recorded before the Monster Mash. The only regret you'll have if you buy this CD is that you didn't get the companion CD, Horror Hop. 4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of Dylan
The problem with these 2 disc multi-artist concerts is that they're often bloated with lesser performers and lesser performances. Here, not so, KK says at the beginning of the concert that "backstage we have assembled one of the greatest group of perfoming artists ever" or something like that, and it's no exaggeration.George Harrison, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Eddie Vedder, Stevie Wonder and on and on...
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Concerts of all time
Bob Dylan over the years has influenced many people, and now its time for those people to give something back.
3-0 out of 5 stars 3 and a half stars
Not bad.The definite highlight is "My Back Pages" where Harrison, Clapton, Dylan, Neil Young, McGuinn, and Petty all take a verse.McGuinn sounds even better on "Mr Tamborine Man" and overall a great effort by all the artist covering some well known and not so well know Dylan songs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This CD deserves a sequel, possibly a boxset
Congratulations,by stumbling on these CD reviews, you've manifested at least some level of inquisitivenss and or appreciation for other artists interpreting Elton and Bernies music. There's a reason, these two artists have built a seriousclassic body of work. Their music has reached the rareelevation of music defined as standards. This criteria used to be reserved for writers as Irving Berlin,Cole Porter, etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Adult contemporary" collection that could use sequel...
To me, it makes for pleasant listening by well known artists during the time of release.I like all of it, but my highlights are Kate Bush (who recorded "Candle In the Wind" on the CD single for "Rocket Man"), Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, Hall & Oates, Oleta Adams, Sinead O'Connor, Phil Collins, and George Michael (who would cover "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me" with Elton 2 years later).Due to the massive amount of material Elton and Bernie wrote (before and since) as well as different ways some of these songs could be reinterpreted, they should put out a second volume to it, esp. after hearing Tim McGraw doing "Tiny Dancer". A lot of the early songs have a lot of R&B and country elements that could take his songs into directions not on this collection, geared towards adult contemporary circa 1990.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not perfect....
I stumbled upon this album again recently, it was bought for me as a birthday gift as I had long since lost the original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to the 60's and 70's
After going to a party and remembering some of the great songs from the Protest Era around the Vietnam war, I bought this album. I was looking for songs from County Joe and the Fish and from others....I had forwotten the great artists like Manfred Mann and Donovon.
1-0 out of 5 stars A complete waste of time and money
One star is far too generous. This CD obviously was cobbled together from someone's old tapes, complete with audible hiss. The selections are all downhill after Eve of Destruction and Universal Soldier.Sonny without Cher?Who ever heard of that?Who can listen to that?

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost Good
My main complaint about this disk is that Hedgehoppers Anonymous song "It's Good News Week" is an abridged version.I haven't heard the long version since the WVVX (a Chicago-area FM station) dropped its "oldies" format in the early 1980s.Surely Rhino could have tracked down the long version.Read more

    Editorial Review

The unwritten rules for doo-wop groups were deceptively simple: name your group after a bird (the Wrens, the Flamingos) or a car (the Cadillacs, the El Dorados), practice your two-, three-, or four-part harmonies on a neighborhood street corner or in the back of a candy store, and sing songs about how much you love your baby. It might have seemed like an obvious formula, but getting it just right was never easy. When it worked, that formula created some of the most joyful and unforgettable music of the 20th century. From the Orioles ("It's Too Soon to Know") to Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers ("I Want You to Be My Girl"), this four-CD collection is without a doubt Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Box Sets!!
If you have even an inkling of interest in this amazing music, you owe it to yourself to get this treasure trove of harmonic bliss.Christmas is coming up so put this at the top of your list.Brilliantly annotated for each track, and possessing amazing remastering (considering some of these songs are well over 50 years old), listening to this will make your mouth hit the floor, wondering how many amazing tracks can be housed in the same place. When you have excellence like this, no price is too steep to pay!

5-0 out of 5 stars TEN GOLD STARS!!!
I read the price tag on the "Doo-Wop Box" and blanched. Then I clicked on the list of tracks on the CDs and freaked for days. If there was ever a treasure trove of great doo-wop, this is it. "Oh Gee" by the Crows."Money Honey" by Clyde McPhatter, not Elvis Presley's knock-off; good though that was, it can't touch Clyde's original."At My Front Door" by the El Dorados (how many times did my friends and I bop to "Crazy little mama come a-knockin', come a-knockin' at my front door, door, door")."Story Untold" by the Nutmegs (one of the best doo-wop hits of all time)."Why Don't You Write Me" by the Jacks."Mary Lee" by the Rainbows?!!?That one used to be the Holy Grail of doo-wop back in the day.And so it goes. The Channels, the Heartbeats, the Platters, the Teenagers, the Teenchords (Louis Lymon, the lead, was Frankie Lymon's little brother), the Cadillacs, the Moonglows, the Cleftones, the Platters, the Dells, the Chantels, the Flamingos, the Paragons, the Jesters, and dozens more, they're all here. This is doo-wop nirvana.
5-0 out of 5 stars *THE* Doo-Wop set to buy
The doo-wop bug bit me early, and I've been a fan ever since. Over the past decade, I've picked up a number of doo-wop LPs, CDs, and box sets. Of all the ones I've come across, this particular set stands heads and shoulders above the rest. In general, the audio quality, considering the available source material, is superb. All four audio CDs are packed full (roughly 25 tracks each) of marvelous vocal harmonies. The accompanying booklet has some wonderful illustrations and great notes. As others here have mentioned, the booklet itself is nearly worth the cost of the set. The box itself is quite sturdy--never a certainty with these box sets; mine has held up beautifully through countless removals from the shelf, openings and closings. Of course, if you know doo-wop, you'll already recognize many of the tracks on this set as classics. The music is absolutely first-rate doo-wop, spanning more than 30 years. Doo-Wop boxes two and three from Rhino are also worth having, but if you just want one to start with, this is the set to buy. Cheaper doo-wop box sets are availble from the UK's "Proper" label and several others, but in terms of selection, quality, and notes, you can't beat this set. Highly recommended! ... Read more

In 1995 Ace Records released the first in a series of three discs entitled "Early Girls".As with just about every other Ace disc I have ever purchased this is a top quality compilation. There are great big hits everyone has heard of as well as some lesser known tracks just waiting to be rediscovered.Likewise you will find familiar artists and some you have probably never heard of.5-0 out of 5 stars Old gems from the fifties and sixties

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great CD!
When it comes to Latin music, I'm pretty ignorant. That is, until I became the lucky winner of a contest to win some Putumayo Latin music CDs.The only Latin-sounding CDs in my collection previously included names like Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony and Ricky Martin--so you can see why I needed some help.I have since learned there is much more to this genre than "Livin' La Vida Loca."Latin aficionados recommend we Latin "virgins" start with compilations like the ones from Putumayo, an innovative label established in 1993 that blends traditional and contemporary global sounds together, creating a unique aural experience. On March 12, 2002, Putumayo's "Latin Groove," was released, the second in its "Groove" series (the first, "Arabic Groove") to combine the flavorful and varied styles and influences in Latin music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney a wee bit on acid.
What an eclectic grouping of artists that came together to make this work. The absolute best Disney tribute CD that adults will probably enjoy more than the children.Sinead deliberatly sings an entire song off key until the last note and it's perfect. There are wonderfull songs that you would expect, but with Tom Waits in the mix you must expect some "oddness".Overall a great CD.5 Stars easy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alternating dark , melancholy and wistful, good but for grown-ups only
I found that listening to this work end to end is going to put you in some peculiar moods. The overall feeling is definitely downbeat, even the up-tempo songs have a decidedly ironic and dark bent. My favorite song in this album has to be the exceptionally soulful rendering of "Baby Mine" by Bonnie Raitt; it turns the sentimental mother-child ballad into something more on the romantic side. I have often slow-danced this one with the wife, and you can really feel a hot intensity under the surface of this number. James Taylor's "Second Star To The Right" is exceptionally wistful in his trademark style. Sun Ra's cover of "Pink Elephants" remains true to the original while retaining the peculiar spacy Sun-Ra vibe. One of the more "accessible" Sun-Ra performances I've ever heard.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really good stuff
I picked this up on CD when it was first released and I was in college, it was always one of my dirty pleasures packed next to harder, grungier, and/or funkier stuff. Well, most of the other stuff has not stood the test of time too well, but Stay Awake still comes out every once in a while. Like the earlier reviewer, I frequently sing my daughters to sleep with Blue Shadows on the Trail ala Syd Straw, and my 2 year old has taken to singing along with me. My one complaint is the medley style of the tracks... some tunes rate an individual track, while other tracks might have three or four tunes faded together. Plenty of different styles on here to satisfy a wide variety of tastes, but it's the purer and more sentimental ones that have always stuck with me. I strongly disagree with the reviewer who thinks Aaron Neville was trying to sex up the Mickey Mouse Club march, I've always felt that his version is laced more with plaintive nostalgia than anything prurient. I've always wished that somebody would put together a Stay Awake 2, but if that means Jessica Simpson gets called in to remake Hakuna Matata, I'll pass. ... Read more

I was a little disappointed in this one. The second is way better by far. Not that all the songs suck there is a handful of good ones The Collin Kids "Whistle Bait" and "Bo Bo Skadaddle" other than that I wouldn't recommend this to somebody who is wanting to hear the Rockabilly sound (Try "Ain't I'm a Dog" for that).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Rockabilly from the Columbia Vaults!
This CD is way better than the first! First you have the insane hillbilly Ronnie Self belting out "forget about the danger and think of the fun" in a screw you devil be damned sneer to 1950's conformity! Then you have the awesome ghostly echoing song by Carl Perkins "Where the Rio Flows"! Link Wray laying down strip tease raunch in "New Studio Blues"! What more could you want! Songs that are white trash, rebellion, lustful, and crazy. Hear the barb wire guitars assault your ears! Hear the violent slapping of the stand up bass! The pummeling drums! The Screaming insane vocals! Got to have it!

Bought this along with the "Whistle Bait" compilation -- it's fun and full of energy, and the sound quality is great. Plus, I'd like to buy a wall calendar from whoever designed the album cover. I had this CD on through my headphones at the gym this morning -- great workout music!

This CD contains big hits from pre-British Invasion American rock and Roll , and more than a few more obscure songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars It is not done better than this
I am a enthousiastic collector, and have almost all the Time Life rock n roll stuff, as well as Eric Records cds of this era. Although they are essential to any 50s 60s collection, nothing can top ACE series.
5-0 out of 5 stars Six stars deserved
Ten years ago Ace records, the premier reissue label in the U.K., initiated their "Golden Age of American Rock and Roll" series. The intent behind this new series of compilations was to present a fully-packed CD of early American rock and roll tunes that goes well beyond the usual repackaging of the same hit titles using the best available tape sources along with interesting backround material on the tracks included all at a reasonable price! Is this really possible from a major music company?Ace has proved it unquestionably. The entire series has become the benchmark for all other reissues from labels around the world and has been phenomenally successful in the process. Here in the first volume emphasis is on top-10 hits with a few charting rarities seldom, if ever, found on CD and certainly not of this sound quality. Two of these tracks ("Cindy's Birthday" and "Since I Fell For You") appear in true stereo with the remainder in mono. While some of these songs have surfaced in stereo since, the quality of most of these tracks holds up even today.Completing the package is a twelve-page booklet with backround notes on the tracks presented. An extraordinary production that is essential to any CD collection of pre-British invasion American rock and roll. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Collection
Nobody's a bigger Hendrix fan than I am, and I still think this is an excellent collection of updated arrangements. Purple Haze by the Cure and Bold as Love by the Pretenders are superb. In fact, the numbers that are closest to sounding like the original--Stone Free and Manic Depression--are the least interesting. The musicians did a great job on this recording, and I'd recommend it to anybody.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad, some generic
I agree with a lot of what has been written about this album. At 43 cents you are getting a bargain. Clapton does sound mailed in; Nigel Kennedy, well lets not get too personal; Buddy Guys, great guitar work but I have never been a fan of his vocals (that is just a personal feeling, if you like his vocals then you will like this song). With that being said, there are some versions which I love and for that go out and buy the album. Chrissie Hynde's version of Axis is fabulous, MACC adds soul to an already great song, Belly has taken a throwaway and has created something special. Overall it is 3 out of 5. The highs are great but the lows (EC you know you could have done better) are generic, which is probably the worst thing you can ever say about a classic artist - especially one that you revere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its a Hendrix Tribute, not a Hendrix record.
There are more Hendrix fans buying this almost expecting Jimi to be channelling his spirit from the other side through these musicians. This is not a seance, its a tribute album. If you're looking to hear Hendrix play, put in an Experience disc, or Band of Gypsies, or one of the hundreds of bootlegs that have been released by now..

Most of the artists on this tribute to Sam Phillips's legendary Memphis label have chosen to cover the rockabilly hits. It isn't until a genuine Sun rockabilly artist--the late Carl Perkins--makes an appearance, joining Van Morrison for Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' on Top of the World," that things briefly get bluesy. Instead, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Chrissie Hynde, Tom Petty, and Bryan Ferry all offer up loving, note-for-note recreations of early Elvis tunes, even if it was Jerry Lee Lewis, not Elvis, who recorded a cover of "Don't Be Cruel" (Ferry's tune) for Sun. 3-0 out of 5 stars It Rocks,however...
A tribute to Sun Records and not a cut from the Killer?? Jerry Lee Lewis lives right down the road from Sun Studio,so why was he excluded from a "tribute" to his old stable? For all who may not know,he still ROCKS,and does so with alot of gusto!! I did enjoy the Dylan cut,as well as McCartney,ChrissieHynde,Van and Carl,Kid Rock,Cheryl, and the rest, many of these tunes have been covered before, and were hits, many by the guy who was snubbed,Mr. Lewis! So what gives?? If the listener isn"t aware of Sam Phillips, the big "E",Carl,Killer,Cash,Warren Smith,Howlin Wolk ,Rufus Thomas and all the rest, then this will help open a door to some reat roots music for them,I found it refreshing overall.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a legacy to stand on
If this were a tribute record, it would be but one of many that have littered the record and CD shelves for the past forty years or so.But this is not a tribute record. It is "the legacy of Sun Records" (see subtitle). What does that mean, exactly?I have no idea, but, apparently, the Sun legacy consists of clueless Sun "cover" versions offered up by clueless celebrity rockers.Somebody should contest the will, in my opinion.(Wait-isn't Sam Phillips still alive?)5-0 out of 5 stars Pulled Off A Very Difficult Project--Great Album!
Let me preface by saying I'm a big fan of American roots music. Growing up, I absolutely craved this type of stuff.I could find a few Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters records at the local library and I "borrowed" my grandfathers Hank Williams record, but Elvis Presley was about the only Sun music readily available. RCA's release of the Complete Sun Sessions in 87 lead me to a general interest in the sun music catalog. Many of the songs I owned as EPs that had been given to me by my grandmother. As a graduating senior from college 93, I took a road trip to Memphis and visited Sun Studio. In the store above the studio, I purchased 2U.K. Import CDs from Charley Records Limited, The Sun Story Vol. 1 Sunrise & The Sun Story Vol. 2 Rockabilly Rhythm. You wouldn't think that the Europeans would have a better handle on our own music but that always seems to be the case.
