5-0 out of 5 stars One of Tricky's very best
Maxinquaye is definitely a breakthrough album--perhaps the Nevermind of trip hop. What's amazing about this CD, especially in the context of so many others in Tricky's catalogue, is that while it is able to maintain the uncompromising creative feel that is ubiquitous of Tricky in his first few albums (basically continuing up to Angels With Dirty Faces), this album is also pretty easy to access for most listeners. Other CDs Tricky has released, while often equally creative and hypnotic, are much harder to grasp for most people. So Maxinquaye makes a wonderful way for someone who is interested to cut their teeth on Tricky's ideas before jumping into something much more esoteric like Nearly God. What's also nice is that this album tends to explore multiple musical perspectives with an equal command of each one, going from up-tempo beats to hazy grooves fluidly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not as great as the hype
Definitely worth buying, but don't expect it to blow your mind like it would have in the 90s.

2-0 out of 5 stars i can't agree with the rave reviews
i hate to bring a dose of reality into this picture but this album just did not do anything for me.I liked Tricky's rapping on Blue Lines but I find it disturbingly annoying on this CD.The music has very little flow or continuity and if you're expecting trip hop like you would find on a Portishead CD, prepare to be disappointed; some tracks sound like bad punk music with female vocals, while others just sound like a washed up marijuana dream with no direction or meaning.Maxine's voice is nice, but the things she sings and the plainly bad melodies make you wish she would just stop. and let me reiterate; Tricky's rapping is ANNOYING.it can hardly be called rapping. in fact it's more like a nonsensical drawl, endlessly about sex. ugh.

Editorial Review

While North American rap drowns in its own clichés, international artists are invigorating the genre with their own musical traditions. The Orishas, a Cuban group based in France, use Afro-Cuban religion to summon the spirit of hip-hop. Named for gods of Santeria, they came together in 1998 when members Yotuel and Ruzzo hooked up with Roldan and Flaco-Pro (a veteran of Sergeant Garcia) through a cultural exchange program between French and Cuban rappers. Collaborating with French hip-hop producer Miko Niko, they bring the attitude of Havana streets to the rest of the world, appealing to the Buena Vista Social Club crowd as well as the hip-hop heads. 5-0 out of 5 stars Lo Mejor de lo Mejor!
When Orishas released this CD I was still living in Cuba. I used to listen to these songs all day long with my friends. Then I moved to US and what can I tell you? 537 Cuba is like an anthem for me because it really tells the reality about the feelings of Cuban people and perhaps every person that lefts his country likes us. On the other hand, these guys are amazing! The mixture of rap with traditional Cuban music is something original, out of this world. I don't like hip hop music at all, but Orishas are the exception. Buy this CD, it worth every penny, you won't be disappointed!

Editorial Review

This gorgeous pair of African princesses are the latest artists with Mother Continent roots--including Baaba Maal, Ray Lema, Youssou N'Dour, Salif Keita, Zap Mama, and Angelique Kidjo--to infuse French music with the soul it would otherwise lack. Unlike those who cut their deep African funk with the cloying sugar of French pop, Helene and Celia Faussart, sisters from Bordeaux, don't give it all up to La Belle France. In clear, warmly intimate, and, yes, Parisian-sexy voices, they snake in and out of each other's way, often coming together to build glorious harmonies, always singing universally uplifting messages [translations in the CD booklet, except for their American-sounding English in "Sugar Cane"]. It's all set in clean-edged, ultrahip, sensitively calibrated tracks that draw on lush soul, steamy funk, beat-driven hip-hop and cool, flowing jazz. But this album is no pastiche of sounds looking to gobble up many demographics. Recorded in France and London, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LES NUBIANS TAKE US ON A WONDERFUL, FLOATING MUSICAL TRIP!!
Five Incredible Stars!! Les Nubians, Helene and Celia Faussart from Bordeau France, sing mainly in French but, trust me, their music renders language completely inconsequential. You'll fall in love with their music anyway. Their voices are ethereal and sultry without being overtly sensuous, hip without being assertive. Perfect complements to each other as they spin solos, counterpoints, and dazzling unison phrases. Somewhat of a Sade-like spell is cast on some of their songs. As a matter of fact "Tabou" is a riff off of the Sade version of "Sweetest Taboo". Trust me, the French language never sounded so good !!
5-0 out of 5 stars One of my Favorites
I originally purchased this CD several years back after hearing Les Nubiens on a Putumayo compilation. It's still one of my favorites. The production is amazing. It's got a very modern hip vibe with strong jazz and African influences. Their version of Sade's Sweetest Taboo (Tabou) is absolutely amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mon sweetest tabou!
I spent my summer this year ('05) listening to these two lovely ladies. A lovely summer indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cette excellent!
Les Nubians are French/Cameroonian sibling duo Clia and Hlne Faussart. This is the follow up to their 1998 debut `Princesses Nubiennes', and following appearances on numerous CDs like the Fela Kuti tribute `Red Hot & Riot', `Bridging the gap' by the Black Eyed Peas, and `Streetsoul' by Guru to name a few.
4-0 out of 5 stars A few steps forward
If you enjoyed Les Nubians' Princesses Nubiennes, I cannot imagine how you could possibly not fall into the same mode with the follow up, One Step Forward. Even two years after its release, these ladies retain a zesty freshness with soft jazzy beats that take the listener to a completely new level with every play! As they did before, they alternate evenly between French and English, doing it so well it is easy to forget you may not know exactly what they're saying. What's even more intriguing is their ability to draw attention so effortlessly with pure vocals accompanied by funk and soul music. I can understand one mistaking the smoothness as boring, but one who appreciates the new sound blend that will last into the future, should check this one out! "La Guerre", "One Step Forward" and "Amour a Mort" are fantastic!

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful and innovative sounds from beautiful voices...

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than Maxinquaye if you ask me
Real good album, lots of raw Tricky vocals. Some great covers too, like a brilliant retake on Lyrics of Fury by Rakim Allah.

5-0 out of 5 stars sensuous, haunting mood
a funky, sensuous little piece of trip hop aural pleasure that makes for a very interesting and satisfying night of mood setting. Proper lighting, candles, storm outside, just the perfect beverage - and you'll be set with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tricky-Pre Millenium Tension (1996)
This album (Trickys second "real" album If not counting Nearly God) Is a dark and sensual nightmare. I mean nightmare in the sense of the claustraphobia and menace. PMT is humid and muggy like a night trying to get to sleep in summer. It is also Trickys most challenging listen so far, from the menace of the raga-isims of "Vent" ("Cant hardly breathe" Moan Tricky and Martine) Most of the album features grooving guitar lines and murky beats which shimmy into the brain and hypnotise the listener.Lyrically PMT focuses on the usual Tricky-esque suffering and paranoia. Some Of PMT is said to be inspired by Trickys recent break-up from Icelandic pop star Bjork Gudmansdottir, As evident in "makes me wanna die"

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Thirsty
Good CD to catch a buzz and zone out to when you're in a bad mood - of course all Tricky's CD's are like that, but i felt the previous release, BLOWBACK, grew old with continued listens - 'Vulnerable' however, gets better with each listen - 'Wait for God' is an extremely wicked song w/ a tight beat, crunchy riffs and dark overtones: "I wait for god, but its very hard. I drink your blood but i'm still thirsty.."
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful sinister soundtrack for your dark days.
It's the ultimate anti-party cd with Tricky's new discovery Constanza purring out lines about dying in a car crash and waiting for God while Tricky himself is a menacing background singer on most of the tracks. It's a great mixture of sweetness and darkness and the lyrics from the songs embed themselves in your mind from "Don't wanna stay another day with you, don't wanna lay with you" to "I'm needy,I'm greedy.." to "Where I'm from there's something wrong I don't belong." Some songs have a bouncy energy and some are just plain haunting(Car Crash) but they all add up to a perfect soundtrack for a tortured soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the most listenable of the tricky cds i think its more mainstream some of the songs are inspirational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now this is the real TRICKY
I have no idea why so many people dislike it for this is no doubt his best. Maxinquaye was great but maybe a bit too eclectic and it actually owed very much to Martina, Pre-millenium tension suffered from over-the-top self-indulgent lyrics and actually didn't come out very well. This is the only Tricky's album i can listen to from the beginning to the end. The sound is outstanding. It features live musicians, awesome funky beats and has a great feel of urban paranoia to it. Don't believe the bad reviews and get this right now!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars So different,SO unique, So good
As a new Tricky fan this cd is the one i received first. I still have more to buy from him right down the list. Next i will get Maxinquaye, then Nearly GOd, and all of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly underrated, simply misunderstood.
Firstly, most don't realize this is the essence of his message. All the instrumentals match his message that he's trying to convey, and that's why it's so dark, seedy, and full of grime. "Ghetto traps didn't trap me, I got out." from Money Greedy is a crystal clear answer to that times' Hip-Hop community and their "trapped in the ghetto" mentality. With that verse alone, he belittles 2Pac, Master P, and other artists that claim to that the system can't be broken. Despite the money they've made, they're still trapped in the ghetto? Sure, and Tricky got out when he makes a fraction of their record sales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Formidable.....my single favorite rap album of all time.
This dude has the gift. His lyrics are outstanding.Anyone who's heard him knows it.I learned as much french from this guy as I did from 6 years of class.Even if you're not into French the cadence is undeniably entertaining. And his dj is awsome too.All the tracks are cool. The best on this cd include Quartier Nord, l' Historie d' Art and Bouge de la of course.Take my recomendation for what its worth, but this guy was ahead of his time.If he rapped in English, forget it, he be up there in popularity with anyone.......Anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Treat: Not quite like any other rap you've ever heard
THIS DISC IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE PREMIUM IMPORT PRICE!It's definitely my favorite MC Solaar disc & one of my best rap CDs, period. It doesn't matter if you don't speak a word of French (I remember a little from 2 semesters in high-school), the sounds and rythm are so intricate and energetic that they more than make up for the jokes and whatever meaning you fail to pick up from the cognates, tone, and musical context.5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD, if you've made it this far! You won't regret it
Claude MC has an amazing gift. His ability to use language, sound, rythym & music to convey a message, at times one that is socially or politically charged, is exceptional. Somehow, in the midst of a song such as "l'Histoire de l'Art," which really flows, the idea that rappers have been discrimated against by certain elements of society who fail to see rap as an art form is introduced. Solaar, using humor, wit, an outstanding intellect and his sheer charisma, easily and non-confrontationally makes the point that the history of art is not complete until it includes the works of ALL artists. Bien Fait, Claude MC, Bravo! Read more

orishas comes back with another amazing record!!this cd had me completely hooked!!as if "a lo cubano" wasn't amazing enough, the guys from orishas come back with a bang.even without flaco-pro, who had some serious skills.he left the group about 4 shows into a tour because his brother got in with some bad people in miami.he was killed, and flaco-pro turned to booze.but be on the look out for flaco, because word is he's still writing and collaborating and recording...
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as their first album
First of all, I am a huge rap and hip hop fan. I own albums from just about every rapper out there. Orishas first album "A lo Cubano" is one of my favorite rap albums of all time. "Emigrante" is a good encore for them but they clearly miss Flaco-Pro who in my opinion was by far their best flower and rhyme spitter. Apparently he had a falling out with the rest of them. He is the reason that their first album was so good. Without him, it seems that they got away from rap and went into more hip hop which is fine. Emigrante is good, but Orishas badly misses Flaco-Pro.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3rd Release By Orishas!
Orishas's 3rd work's release date is not official yet but will must likely come out around September 20th.... so be on the look out!

5-0 out of 5 stars 12 INCHES OF SNOW
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD TO ANYONE WHO WAS GROWING UP IN THE LATE 1980'S EARLY 1990'S. WE ALL REMEMBER SNOW BY HIS SONG'S INFORMER AND GIRL IVE BEEN HURT. THIS CD DEFINITELY BROUGHT ME BACK TO MY TEENAGE YEARS WHICH WAS THE BEST.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not terrible but not good either - this remains an "ok" reggae album
The only song people know by Snow (that is, *if* they even know who recorded it) is his hit single "Informer" from the early 90's. While that was a good song it clearly is nowhere near being a "classic". Unfortunately, Snow seemed to like this song SO much that he essentially made a remix of it on "Lonely Monday Morning" (it's the EXACT SAME WORDS but to a different beat and rhythm - at no point does he tell you it's a remix, either). The other funny thing about that is that "Lonely Monday Morning" happens to be the second best song on the album. If you've heard those two songs then you've essentially heard the rest of the album - more unique vocals by Snow and words that are impossible to make out (although, he IS actually singing the lyrics, but they're almost impossible to figure out if you don't have the lyrics right in front of you). Thankfully none of the songs are "bad" necessarily, but they're not good either - they're essentially just "ok". The songs tend to also sound a bit cheesy and dated which certainly doesn't help its appeal nor its rating. It's not the worst album I've ever heard, but it's not good either. Musically it's essentially a mix between reggae and hip-hop. and while it certainly sounds unique it doesn't really sound inspired either way. The fact that you can't understand any of what he's singing doesn't help the situation, either. As a whole it remains an "ok" album - I've certainly heard MUCH worse (Snow's voice helps, too, considering it's not bad). This is basically just for Snow fans or for people who absolutely love "Informer". Not recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Snow is GR8
People dislike SNOW because they think he is a wannabe. I think it is just jealousy. You try adapting R&B and reggae and pop all into 1 style. I think his music is ingenious. He has a good voice anyway. He is from poverty and was able to make a living doing what he loves. Don't get mad cuz you can't. I was the first in Kentucky to have 12" of snow back in 93 and still love it. Have murder love and justuss as well as the greatest hits. Haven't bought mind on the moon or two hands clapping yet but plan to. And like the other person was saying its about music not fads. I LIKE VANILLA ICE TOO! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best French Rap CD ever recorded
This is probably the best french rap disc ever recorded. The disc originally came out in 1994 which was probably one of the peak years for worldwide rap prodiction in terms of quality. This is the best album MC Solaar has ever recorded. If you like Dubmatique, French Affair, or numerous other groups in the past and present Quebec mainstream, you will love this one.Obsolete and Relations Humaines are especially good. This is one of the few CD's I've ever purchased in which every song on the disc is quality.I would recommend it to anyone.Even if you are not fluent in French you will be enhanced by the rythms.

5-0 out of 5 stars mc solaar, mc sogreat
disregard the 1 star ratings as they are probably 1 star folk. heard this superb album the first time back in the good ole days of 1994 and still love it. all tracks good, some tracks are great. i still wonder why such talent can't make a spot on the charts here.5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal
This is one incredible recording from an amazing talent. The beat is perfect, and this is simply the most elegant rapping in existence.Makes me want to learn the French language. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing complex...just fun
Amazon's tracklisting seems wrong here. There is nothing complex or deep about this album....but I listen to frequently....it's totally rowdy and fun. My favorites are Ruffneck and Hold Up Your Hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bit short of a masterpiece, but......
When "Don't Stop" was released as a single it really stood out as something different on dance-type radio. Not downloading any of the tracks, I took a chance and dropped the $ to see if the rest of the album (by an unknown band to me) could hold up as well.I wasn't disappointed. The album is not a cover to cover masterpiece, but it is a great piece of work.It falls short on a couple of filler tracks, but definatley worth the investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars A change of pace, that will change your attitude.
I can't think of a higher complinent to pin to this album than this: from start to finish it's one hell of a ride! Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "A Great Guide"
This cd is very different although it seems like its just a combination of alot of his other albums rolled onto one album i think it gets tricky's best. Working with people like Bjork,Allison Goldfrapp, etc. he brings a "different" taste to the trip hop scene. At times I think the way the album was put together it the tracks could of been placed in a different order but thats just my picky side. The song "Poems" which takes you on almost a depressing but enlightening road gets u ready for what the album ride is like. "Broken Homes" which features the punk/alternative artist PJ Harvey is a song which seems like the drum pattern is from a drummer boy goin to war and a choir chanting lyrics about how people just cant seem to keep things together these days."Pumpkin" which features Allison Goldfrapp is a Smashing Pumpkins sampled song which is a very mellow and almost seems like it is halloween when your listening to it. The album overall is a great album and is just a poetic and very settle rollercoaster..

5-0 out of 5 stars Tricky Is Around The Corner
Sjajna kompilacija koja pravi presek onog sto smo slusali sa uzivanjem tokom devedesetih i cemu smo se divili, a sto je pocetkom dvadesetprvog veka polako pocelo da nestaje.
4-0 out of 5 stars How to buy Tricky
How to buy Tricky? I consider Maxinquaye and Pre-Millenium Tension as the first stops, but as a sampler for the critical years between 1993 and 1999 this Ruff Guide makes a useful overview that will point you to your own preferences. The tricky kid did pretty well as a non-singer non-musician from the Knowle estates of Bristol, first with Massive Attack and then on his own (Overcome was a reworking of Massive Attack's Karmacoma), creating some of the most innovative and atmospheric music of the nineties.

5-0 out of 5 stars an unfortunately slept on album...
IMHO, one of the great albums of all time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Seems like No one's heard of this hip hop classic
I spent a long time trying to re-find this album after it was originally stolen from me.It wasn't til the re-release that I was able to find it and I was amazed at all the fantastic MC's from the past that were used on this album.Everyone from Grand Puba, Guru, Jamalski, Masta Ace, the Pharcyde, Main Source and Kool G Rap drop rhymes on this album, and the funky, jazzy beats by the Brand New Heavies are just so refreshing. This is like a breath of Fresh air when it comes to hip hop, and just the names of the Mc's alone should make it worthwhile.5-0 out of 5 stars Any True Fan of Hip-Hop or Funk Should...
Own this album! This is one of the best CDs I've ever owned, and one of the best hip-hop CDs of all-time. I can't say it enough -- buy this CD, you can't be dissapointed. Super funky English acid-jazz band at their peak and dope MCs, but all organic and stripped down. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this cd is chingon !!!!!!!
this cd is chingon the songs are some about protest of the government which sadly is corrupt in some areas , but never the less this cd is bad ass , the sound of the guitars are awsome ....viva el rock y viva molotov !!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars These hombres got nothin' on RATM
I read a review on Rage Against the Machine that claimed this band is "a million times better" than RATM.I have only one problem with that opinion - it's wrong. These guys have a pretty good sound.Nice, hard riffs and basslines, but I think they could've found a better singer. This guy has a major speech impediment. The vocals don't even sound like English, for Webster's sake!!And those song titles???Some are legible, but most look like Greek to me.How about a little spell check next time?!
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good!
Very political, very heavy, very interesting. I like the strength of the guitars on some songs, while in others is more like a smooth balance of lyrics and music. The songs are powerfull, insipred by mexican pride and lots of complains about the government, which is the reason why these record has being banned in so many places. None the less it will be a classic.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lucas with the lid off Music Video
This is in response to the one poster wondering if Amazon has the music video to 'Lucas with the lid off'..
5-0 out of 5 stars Why cant it all be this good
I absolutely love this album and wish it had gotten more attention at it original release. This is from a time when hip-hop still existed, the words give a message and the music is original and tight. You dont listen to any of the songs trying to remeber where you heaard that beat before. Everything about this album is so wonderful it should be re-released with the stuff that is being put out today it has no choice but to do well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite
This album is a wonderful anomoly in the world of hip-hop. Lucas' production is unlike anything that has been done before or since. On 'Born', he raps "I never listen to another rapper too hard- I gotta beme!" and it's not empty bragging; his beats and rhyming styles aresome of the most unique and nonderivative I've heard. He was really able toget across a sense of himself as an individual on this album, bothmusically and verbally, something that is especially rare for a hip-hopalbum. For that reason, Lucacentric has always had a special place in mymusic collection, and it should in yours, too. ... Read more
