3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
I was really looking for all romantic/sexy type songs.Perhaps some people younger than I would consider these romantic, but not all of them are.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest hit of Barry White
Like his forebear Isaac Hayes, White was not just a deep-voiced crooner, but a talented producer and arranger who'd spent years honing his craft behind the scenes in the industry. And like Hayes, White spent a great deal of time setting up moods on his albums, using lush, sweeping orchestrations to build very gradually to climaxes. It took quite a while for a definitive Barry White compilation to hit the market, but All-Time Greatest Hits part of Mercury's Funk Essentials series finally filled the bill in 1995. The total package made White an R&B love-man icon not just for the disco era, but all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't get Enough of You, Barry White
Oh, Barry White. Wasn't he great? I miss the big guy. I just felt he knew soul frontwards and backwards and every way in between and this CD proves it. He had such a great voice and really knew how to use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's Going On
This is considered the first concept album ever released by Motown, but it did not come out of the blue. Other producers had tried before Gaye: Holland-Dozier-Holland attempted to create a sort of "love concerto" in The Supremes's "I Hear a Symphony"; Norman Whitfield began to experiment with the idea in The Temptations' "Cloud Nine", and Frank Wilson almost made it a year before Gaye with the Four Tops' "Still Waters Run Deep", and he even tried to reproduce the soundtrack of a musical with "Diana Ross & The Supremes Join The Temptations", with "overture" (a terrific version of Gaye's hit "Try It, Baby"), and grand finale included. Marvin Gaye not only came with the stronger album from a thematic point of view (war, drugs, poverty, unemployment, racism, religious faith, ecology, politics), but also because of its urban-drama feel, --later found in Stevie Wonder's "Innervisions"--, and its lyrical proto-funk musical treatment. For the first time the session musicians known as The Funk Brothers, and the resident backing vocalists The Andantes were given credit on a Motown album, and Gaye had full control of his production. A great album that conveys one of the most intense moments of the United States cultural life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Album
Gaye was named after his father, a minister in the Apostolic Church. The spiritual influence of his early years played a formative role in his musical career.
5-0 out of 5 stars Believe the Hype
I'm not too familiar with R&B studio albums (other than a couple Stevie Wonder records), but this is the best I've heard so far. The title track was the biggest hit, and justly so - it's one of the man's best songs, everything just falls into place on this one. Marvin's vocals and especially his yearning, pro-peace lyrics especially stand out. I also love Save the Children, him pretty much saying that, although the world is screwed, we should live life for the children. Mercy Mercy Me is a haunting ode to the environment, the first time I heard the choir part at the end it was chilling. Next up is the seven-and-a-half minute Latin-funk Right On, a longer song that's downright captivating, and the most un-Narvin Gaye-sounding song on this album. But he pulls it off, in fact it's one of the best. The album closes out with my favorite Marvin track, Inner City Blues, a haunting pseudo-rap which deals with the bad parts of urban life. There are a couple of other great songs (What's Happening Brother, Flyin' High) on here too, but these are the ones that stand out to me especially. Plus the album has a wonderful flow to it. There's not a bad song here, either!

4-0 out of 5 stars Despite the Slightly Misleading Title, This CD Works Well in My Collection
Let me explain. Before buying "Every Great Motown Hit," I already owned "Best of, Millennium Collection, Volume 1 the 60s," which included all of Marvin's excellent solo sixties songs. For what it is, it does a good job (I reviewed it five stars earlier), but solo sixties means no duets with Tammi Terrell and no seventies songs are included. So I was looking for a good way to add those songs to my collection when a used copy of "Every Great Motown Hit" caught my eye. Turns out it works very well in my CD collection, with only four overlap songs (I bought the original version of this CD, without bonus tracks "Ain't That Peculiar" and "I'll be Doggone") between my other Marvin Gaye collection.

Marvin Gaye was one of the greatist if not the greatist singers of all time and this cd proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt! 1-0 out of 5 stars WHERE IS MAXWELL????
I used to like this album, along with all of Maxwell's work."Now" was such a great addition to my Maxwell collection...it was unique like he is, but still fairly mainstream.I liked "Embrya", but I understood that it wasn't going to be popular with most people. This was more popular, and for those who were "scared off" by Embrya, come back to Now and you won't be disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Is R&B dead?
Well obviously its not, but it is an endangered species. The trend continues for r&b to be mixed with more hip hop and/or pop. Consequently, r&b has become seriously diluted and reshaped. This has sparked the neo-soul movement: artists coming out trying to return r&b to its roots. However, this presents a problem within itself. Many neo-soul artists try so hard to be retro and deep that they either bring nothing new, and/or become very uninteresting. They wear their influences on their sleeves and come off as borrowers or copyists. Giving respect to your heroes without becoming derivative is an art that not enough have mastered it.

Handsome in his designer clothes and angelic, nappy dreads, Maxwell styles himself a modern-day urban love prophet in the tradition of Marvin Gaye. He concocts a conceptual music suite that purports to tell a fully rounded tale of meaningful love set in the tough but misunderstood inner city. What he delivers, however, contains only the faintest hints of what he promises. Instead we get a whole lot of the same tired R&B elevator slush and lyrics like "Gonna take you in the room suga'/ Lock you up and love for days."Read more

I bought this c.d. because I like the song "Nobody" and it was the only good song on here. I read other reviews about how good this c.d. is and it is actually a waste but that is okay. 3-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable listening experience
I liked this CD a lot.I especially liked "Dance With My Father" & "The Closer I Get to You".Since this was Luther's last cd, it was especially poignant to hear all these songs.I'd recommend this to every Luther fan, although I suspect all his die hard fans already have it, if only for sentimental reasons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dance with My Father is by far the greatest CD
Ultimately Amazing. Luther showed the world that not only is he a talented singer but a talented songwriter as well.I would have paid full price for just the 1st cut alone! "If I Didn't Know Better" is so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes, I wondered if I would get to the rest of the CD. When I did, I knew I had to do something that I've never done! That was this! This CD is worth the time it takes to log on and write a review, Luther deserves phrase for this masterpiece!
5-0 out of 5 stars Rest in peace
"Dance with my father" is a true testament to the greatness of Luther Vandross. The 5 stars is earned not by the rest of the CD, but by his title track.I just lost my father less than a year ago and I can truly grasp listening to his song his feeling.Vandross is a master of getting into the emotional side of people. He definitely did that for me in this track and all of his other great hits.He will surely be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The true king of R&B
Luther was the king from the moment of his first ALBUM (remember those) release. Many artists have tried to and none of them has even come close to the magic Luther could do with a song. There are a lot of babies and marriages in this world thanks to Luther and I know for one, I'm going to miss him. There no point of listing my faves on this CD since I love them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maxwell is the best.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Each song has a unique title
The music flows smoothly. They're really good.. sometimes when I feel upset or moody, this CD can calm me down. All I do is just lay on my bed, watch the ceiling (or maybe close my eyes), and listen to this album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Maxwell's subtle majestic funk even deeper than it's predecessor The Suite
Yes! Yesterday, three days before it's official release in Europe, I found Maxwell's new album in several recordstores in my hometown, just below Amsterdam in Holland. Ofcourse I didn't hesitate buying it and I haven't stopped listened to it since. As a matter of fact I'm listening to it right now! When I compare my first listening experience of Embrya with the Suite, I must say, there's a big difference. I dug the Suite at once. There has been this spell from the beginning. I was filled with enthusiasm by his majestic funk from the very very first note I heard. An enthusiasm that hasn't weakened since. It has been my most played album since it's release back in '96. However the first listening round for Embrya was a bit of a disappointment. I didn't know what to think, what to feel. The production was beautifully done, as always. It's crystal clear, subtle and deep. For a moment I feared he might have overdone it. Most of the songs seemed less accessible, less catchy and more demanding than on the Suite. So after this first listening round I couldn't help thinking that this might be one of these albums that have to grow on you. So I played it again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again... and my conclusion less than 24 hours later has to be, Maxwell: you did it! You came up with the perfect follow up to the Suite. The growth is obvious. Not only musically, but also thematically. The songs are deeper and more spiritual than on the first album, thus more complex. That's why it took a bit longer for me to appreciate them. My favourites for now are 'Matrimony/Arroz con pollo', the latter being no less than 'Matrimony part 2'. The horn riffs and the rhythm guitars on it are as funky as funky can get. 'Know these things' must be his most delicate song to date. It's beautiful! 'Eachoureachsecondetc' is also one of my favourites. The album starts with the lovely intro of 'Everwanting' that builds the tension beautifully, just like the extended intro of 'Ascension' during his live performances. It makes you want to stand up and pledge allegiance to Maxwell's Majestic Funk. So Maxwellians, take your time with this new jewel. It deserves that. But beware, it might prove to be even more addictive than it's predesessor. By the way: Although there are lyrics of it in the booklet 'Gestation:mythos' isn't on the album... or is it? Remember the surprising 'Til the cops' reprise on the Suite? Well, there's one of those on this one as well, only less obvious. You may want to rewind your cd player just before 'Everwanting' starts. Enjoy! ... Read more

The classiest of R&B's lover men, Luther Vandross eschews the sweaty soul intensity of his predecessors for a silky-smooth sound that achieves its romantic aims nonetheless. In the hands of a lesser artist, Vandross's narrow focus on love songs would seem restrictive, but he somehow finds endlessly entertaining ways of conveying simple messages like "I love you," "I miss you," and "Why did you leave me?" 3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Blessing
The death of Marvin Gaye left a hole in the R&B community that has never been filled, and R&B has been in decline ever since.Babyface is frankly too effeminate to step up; Luther Vandross was our best hope.Vandross was irrefutably male, had a great voice, and possessed amazing sensitivity.Unfortunately he was the victim of inconsistent material and goopy overproduction. This 2-CD anthology demonstrates the syndrome, when it's good, it's frighteningly good, but it's frequently bad and sometimes awful.
4-0 out of 5 stars Luther: Tried and True
It's the rich, full voice of "classic" Luther all in one collection. The tracks aren't digitally remastered so the older ones sound a little flat. But I still recommend it as part of any "old school" collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars luther cd
I am really enjoying this CD esp. the up beat tunes like "Glow of Love" and "Searching"; they are sometimes hard to find or hear on the radio. I really need 2--one for the car and 1 for home; maybe even 1 for work because once I put this CD on, I'm good to go! His voice was truly a gift from God and when he passed, it felt as though I'd just lost my favorite cousin that day. A 3 CD set would be nice, just to capture some of his newer hits, but for the true classics, this CD is a treasure. I know his soul in his heaven--thank God he left the gift of voice with us through song. ... Read more

Ordered by a judge to turn over the profits from two albums to the first wife he'd left, Marvin Gaye produced this bitter, sad, bewildered masterwork. 5-0 out of 5 stars Soothing for the bewildered & broken-hearted
I came across this excellent gem last summer, during the final court proceedings etc. of the ugly break-up of a relationship. My ex kept suing and suing relentlessly, until she had exhausted all possibilities. She had been the greatest love of my life and... Well, don't wanna bore you with all the details.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tell it like it is Marvin
Marvin, in "Here My Dear," is both telling Anna Gordy how he feels about their pending divorce settlement and also letting the listeners on "inside" information. He was a master of the suite (singing one song and going directly into another song with a new tempo). Since he had to pay Anna with his royalties of the album, he would truly do it "Marvin's way."This album, in my opinion, truly has some classic songs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Underrated and overlooked
Finally picked this one up and I'm very glad I did! This is a great album that is generally overlooked by all but Marvin Gaye fanatics, but it ranks up there with his best. Very much a concept album, Here My Dear chronicles Gaye's turbulent marriage to Anna Gordy, who received the album's profits as part of the couple's divorce settlement. Emotionally raw but beautifully sung, this one's a lost classic. ... Read more

There are certain things that I really appreciate about Marvin Gaye-mainly the fact he is a stellar vocalist with a unique gift that often makes his interpretations of material especially moving. Also, at times he can be an absolutely brilliant composer (if you haven't heard "Trouble Man", it is nothing short of pure genius). But this album, I must say, is highly overrated-even by most "music" critics.Which is actually a pretty impressive feat for an R&B album-most "music" critics have a blatant, strong, obvious, no shame and no qualms about it rock bias. The brilliant title track shows the potential for what this album could have been, but unfortunately, much of this album amounts to little more than pedestrian, insipid R&B.I will grant that its singular focus provides a cohesive force of sorts that makes the album work well as a concept, but in this case, it unfortunately also seems to contribute to the major problems with some of the material. This album is quite smooth and many consider it the epitome of quiet storm R&B, but it can also be pretty bland and it has very little in the way of musical invention. It's obvious by the time that you get to the second (well, maybe third) song that the funk brothers did not participate in this project, but I'll go into detail about why that's so significant in a minute.Marvin's voice is amazing throughout this album, but almost every song is in the same key, at the same tempo, with the same slick and professional but totally devoid of any heart or character playing by the musicians. The musicians probably bare some responsibility for this, but I must say after listening to this album, that several of the compositions are so banal that I don't know that much else could have been done with them. The most obvious exception here is the title track, which really is a masterpiece. Some of the other material is also really good with some really interesting things going on musically ("come get to this" with its bass drum and tambourine playing perfectly off of one another to form the backbone of the rhythm section). But unfortunately, most of the other material does not live up to the same standard, and some of it is so insanely bland that it's a painful chore to actually listen to.I sometimes see this album compared to "What's Going On" which is a pretty absurd comparison as far as I'm concerned."What's Going On" is one of the greatest albums that I've ever heard, and that can be largely credited to the involvement of the funk brothers, who are probably the single most influential group of musicians of all time. The mind-blowingly brilliant bassist James Jamerson in particular is just as much the star of that album as Marvin.Their stellar musicianship, musical invention, and rich, passionate, and distinct playing are truly missed here on this project. Some of the material here is still really good, and part of my criticism is due to the fact that I hold Marvin Gaye to a higher standard than your average artist, just to put things into perspective. But still, too much of this album is way too mediocre for it to be considered great as a whole. But, the album is still worth at least one spin and the title track and a few others still make it worth buying if you can find it for a decent price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soul Supreme
Let's Get It On is only a notch below What's Going on making it among the essential Soul recordings of all-time. Often heralded as the quintessential bedroom record Let's Get It On is much more than that. The suite is inspired by his dying love for his wife Anna and his starting passion for Janis, his new flame. If I Should Die Tonight alledgedly only got his convincing take after Marvin laid eyes on Janis for the very first time. Marvin was in his thirties at the time, Janis not yet of legal age.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the top 5 albums of all time
Music critics always cite "What's Going On?" as Marvin's best album. It's a great album, for sure, but this one is better. I don't know if those critics read one stellar review of "What's Going On?" as kids, and it just stayed with them, or what, but "Let's Get It On" ranks higher. It was Marvin's biggest selling Motown album, it went triple platinum within a year back when the US has about a hundred million fewer inhabitants than it does now.

Another Marvin Gaye overview/introduction? Why not? Pullingtogether the usual hits from "I'll Be Doggone" to "Grapevine," "What'sGoing On" to "Let's Get It On" to "Sexual Healing"--all musts for anyR&B or pop fan--this two-CD set also offers treats for the Marvinconnoisseur. Foremost are the previously unreleased "Where Are WeGoing?" which marries Nixon-era (and beyond) social concerns to alilting groove that brings to mind Spinners records ofthe period, and an alternate mix of Gaye's rare version of "His Eye Ison the Sparrow." 5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Marvin
The name Marvin Gaye says it all. They don't call him Marvelous Marvin for nothing.Truly one of the most gifted vocalists-performers of all time - an excellent compilation.
5-0 out of 5 stars a cd collection item
I Love this cd. Since im only 21 I don't really know anything about marvin gaye but from what people and parents tell me, until now. I brought this cd and WOW this has shown me a lot about Marvin Gaye and though out his life. I think that this is my favorite cd I have in my collection.I Love every song on here. I can't say which songs its missing to have it even more complete but its fine the way it is.I would recommend this cd to my age so they can learn about real soul music. For me it wasnt just about buying it to listen to, it was about myhistory. I feel that not only can you go to the library, watch the history channel, buti also can just push play on my stereo. I really listen to this cd and envy all the people that witness his performance when he was alive. my favorite song on here to me is the where are we going. I won't break down every song cause i believe that if a person like marvin gaye then they would like it anyway. listening to this cd he is my favorite artist, not rkelly, and not usher. I think this cd should be in everyone randb collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Uneven...could've been one disc.
This comp features soaring highs and really low lows. Take the first disc: Stubborn Kind of Fella, Hitch Hike, How Sweet It Is, I'll Be Doggone, Ain't That Peculiar, It Takes Two, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing, Ain't No Duet Without Ain't In It's Name (Okay, I made that up), I Heard It Through the Grapevine and Too Busy Thinking 'Bout My Baby are all very strong numbers. However, they are countered by What Were They Thinking?-type songs. For all practical purposes (I love saying that!), Pride and Joy and Wonderful One are the same song. A couple of the duets do nothing for me, and a few of the orchestrated songs are just blah. The second disc is the same way...classics What's Going On, Mercy Mercy Me, Inner City Blues (my favorite track), Trouble Man, Let's Get It On and Got to Give It Up are met with...You're the Man? Ego Tripping Out? Come Get to This? I Want You? PRAISE??? In spite of this lack of balance, it's still a good comp, it just could've been made into one disc. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Is It Still Good to Ya?

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful package from a TRUE talent!
At 37 I'm old enough to remember all of Teddy's solo work when it was first released and being played on local R&B radio. My moms bought the albums, 45s or 8 tracks and we enjoyed the music. Now that I'm older and have listened to lots and lots of "performers" with no real vocal talent, I've truly come to appreciate a genuine talent whose passion is truly felt in his music. That's almost non-existent today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Teddy All Day Long
There is nothing better than Teddy in the morning. Wait maybe Teddy in the afternoon. But then again there is Teddy at night. This album is not for the faint of heart. You may pass out several times from an o.d. of passion and soul. BUY IT! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Luther Vandross
Great CD. Heard a few tracks while in my sister-in-law's car and decided that I just had to have it. Was not disappointed when I heard the whole CD. My sister just picked up her copy recently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amen to that!
I'd have to agree wholeheartedly with the review submitted by Distant Voyaguer.Unfortunately, Luther Vandross has passed on since, but what's the purpose of having all these various compilations of his music, and TWO 2-disc versions of his music.Everyone who isn't totally deaf knows that Luther Vandross' singing was phenomenal, spectacular, amazing, but come on! Even the most timeless songs can get tiring if they appear on 50 different albums. There is some variation between what songs you can get from either 2-disc compilation, but think for a second. Both have:
5-0 out of 5 stars Luther Will Not Be Forgotten!
"Essiential Luther Vandross" is the best collection of Luther Vandross songs you could find. There have been several others, but most of them falls flat since they don't cover too alot of his work, this double album does however and it was released in 2003, so apart from the "Dance With My Father" album it got most of his hits.

Editorial Review

When I first heard "I Want Her" from this 1987 recording, I dropped what I was doing and ran to a record store. The single is the prototype for what Teddy Riley, who did the drum and keyboard programming on the song, would call "New Jack Swing." It has hip-hop's rhythmic chatter and R&B's fierce uptempo drive. Although Riley contributes to most of the songs on this disc, Sweat has a different direction in mind. He aspires to be--and with future releases became--the king of the slow jam. His warm, deep tenor and his intelligently crafted songs set the standard for the pre-Maxwellian loverman. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Keith Sweat got it right the first time, best album!
The whole album is butter. A lot of babies were probably made off of this. The difference between Make it last Forever and the rest of Keith career is that he macking on this album. The rest of his career he resorted to straight begging to get the cooch. Personal favorites are every song for real. This is an R&B slow jam standard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes me back!!!
I purchased this CD from a seller man2godforever last Friday and it came today like promised, thanks man2godforever,I'm listening to it right now on my computer, sounds really good.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish Make It Last Forever, would last forever @}->---
Make It Last Forever is probably my second favourite R 'n B song ever (after My My My).It is such a beautiful song and so is this entire album.I've been a fan of Keith's from the beginning and I still go back to this.I Want Her is probably the next best cut on the album, but in reality - it's all good. This is the King of New Jack and nobody does it better than Keith.Make It Last Forever should be in every r'n b fan's collection.I had to go and re-buy this on cd because the cassette I had was wearing thin because after each time Make It Last Forever finished, I'd keep winding it back.I highly recommend this cd.Amazing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential For Anyone's Record Collection
Marvin Gaye is quite simply one of the finest talents in the entire history of American music, and this collection is proof of that.
2-0 out of 5 stars Inferior Rehash of'The Very Best Of Marvin Gaye' 2 CD Set
Since 'Gold' is nothing but an inferior rehash duplicate of 'The Very Best Of Marvin Gaye' CD set, I'll repeat most of my previous review here. While the music on this latest compilation is great, it's missing A VERY ESSENTIAL MARVIN CLASSIC....'After The Dance'!! This 2 CD set (nice packaging though!!) is a MAJOR FAILURE without 'After The Dance', and THERE IS enough room for it's inclusion (I remastered the set myself to include 'After The Dance' & more!!).
5-0 out of 5 stars From that stubborn kind of fellow to the midnight man: the best of Marvin Gaye
From first glance, when you look at something like a cover of a greatest hits album like this, you think 'wow, nice rare photo' and then you put the album in and the same stuff you had in the other greatest-hits album of the same artist is reduced to rubbish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teddy P....
His deep-rooted soul and sexy singing burst onto the scene when others were still doing 4 part harmonies, wearing galactic costumes and practicing cheographed steps! He gave to women what no other male solo performer had ever given them; hot, melting, dripping raw sensuality on wax! His "For Women" only concerts were bold, legendary and always Sold Out!Not many artists present or past can touch that! His "Live" shows were something to behold!
5-0 out of 5 stars strong collection
Teddy Pendergrass brought flavor to these cuts. His voice truly is smoking on these cuts. they are as fresh now as when they dropped back in the day.the production&Instrumentation go hand in hand with the Gritty vibe that Teddy Pendergrass brings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Luther Vandross
I have collected all of Luther's recordings.I stopped listening to all of them after purchasing this recording. This CD has all the best songs and it reveals what a wonderful entertainer Luther Vandross was.I pitty those that were not able to catch him live at least once.WHERE IS THE DVD???

5-0 out of 5 stars Argueably the greatest R&B vocalist of all time
Without a doubt, Luther was one of the gratest singers of all time. Very rarely does a singer live CD sound as good as the studio version but Luther amazes us with live renedtions of all the hits.
