Editorial Review

Badu and her large turban appeared out of nowhere in early 1997, on a murmuring, romantic album that trod the median between old-school soul and contemporary electronic R&B. Badu's songs, especially the hit "On & On" and the catchy "Certainly," recall Sade in their polished, subtle sexiness. Badu almost never raises her voice--save the occasional "ooh-wee!" exultation--but she skillfully uses repetition and chanting to empower her words. Later portraying a beautiful swamp queen, she was one of the only good things about the movie Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC
Its so hard to write a review almost 10 years after the fact. And 10 years later there has been nothing like this cd. Erykah hasn't even topped her self.
4-0 out of 5 stars Erykah's lyrics is very positive and earthy.
"Erykah Goodu" as I have so regally named her has spun a web of song's that would cure any black widow's bite. She combines smoothness with a variety of down-to-earth, and even sometimes humorous topics. She swings the listener to her side with the opening "Rimshot", and then exposes her broad range of aural colors in "On and On". This title is foreshadowing for the rest of the album which keeps the audience groovin' on and on and on and on......................
4-0 out of 5 stars Mariah, Mary, Toni, Aaliyah ... and Erykah
Badu's the last of what I personally considered to be THE breakout, defining ladies of 1990s R&B.Each brought something new (and/or came with a certain style/flavor FIRST in the '90s) to the table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection
Mama's gun has two fantastic pros to it. Firstly,It uses "real" intruments to create a more organic and warm feel to it. Secondly,It sounds perfect at any time of day, whether it be morning, midday, afternoon or late night.Strongly recommended for those who like old 70's soul and dislike most modern and commercial r&b

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Vibes
I finally opened this CD on a 20hr roadtrip. After replaying it several times with permission of my passenger, we were both singing to it. Upbeat and easy groove. Well written and great vocals. 1-0 out of 5 stars WHERE IS MAXWELL????
I used to like this album, along with all of Maxwell's work."Now" was such a great addition to my Maxwell collection...it was unique like he is, but still fairly mainstream.I liked "Embrya", but I understood that it wasn't going to be popular with most people. This was more popular, and for those who were "scared off" by Embrya, come back to Now and you won't be disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Is R&B dead?
Well obviously its not, but it is an endangered species. The trend continues for r&b to be mixed with more hip hop and/or pop. Consequently, r&b has become seriously diluted and reshaped. This has sparked the neo-soul movement: artists coming out trying to return r&b to its roots. However, this presents a problem within itself. Many neo-soul artists try so hard to be retro and deep that they either bring nothing new, and/or become very uninteresting. They wear their influences on their sleeves and come off as borrowers or copyists. Giving respect to your heroes without becoming derivative is an art that not enough have mastered it.

Handsome in his designer clothes and angelic, nappy dreads, Maxwell styles himself a modern-day urban love prophet in the tradition of Marvin Gaye. He concocts a conceptual music suite that purports to tell a fully rounded tale of meaningful love set in the tough but misunderstood inner city. What he delivers, however, contains only the faintest hints of what he promises. Instead we get a whole lot of the same tired R&B elevator slush and lyrics like "Gonna take you in the room suga'/ Lock you up and love for days."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums in any genre --- EVER.
Words cannot describe the quality of this album. It is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Only "Left and Right" is slightly below the bar, but considering the staggering genius that constitutes the rest of the album, a slight misstep like "Left and Right" can be overlooked.

4-0 out of 5 stars PURE SOULFUL ENERGY
Erykah Badu's music always has soul and such energy and this, her latest album, does not disappoint.I've heard her several times live in Dallas and she is fantastic in person, she brings an edge to her soulful songs when she's live.Being of the caucasion persuasion, which is to say im tan with a white primer, I dont always agree with Ms. Badu's, uh let's say Afro Centric views, but I respect her opinions and I love her talent.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Erykah Badu... My Therapist!
what can I say... Brilliant!Erykah Badu is one of the badest ladies out!I dont care what anyone says.. Erykah is always on point. Many did not expect this LP to be any different from her last but if you are an Erykah fan you will notice that she tries to do something different each time. Most fans were expecting her to continue singing all that heartbreak and girl be strong stuff but come on... everybody gets over that phase in life and there comes a time when you have to let all that go and move on.And that is exactly what she did.She brought back all of our good times with "back in the day"!She gave us courage to speak up (ladies) with "I want you"She gave a warning to you ladies who love them dope bois so much in "danger".She put her demo down with this LP.Now I cant wait until Freakquency comes out.I am so looking forward to her next project... In the meantime... if you like Erykah Badu check out Zap Mama.... Shes another bad one to look out for.. Until next time Peace!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars To be honest.....
Okay, so she's my homegirl as far as music is concerned, but I was slightly disappointed with this album.Fans, that's probably only because I compared it to her past albums, and my heart seems to be with Baduizm.Yet and still, I did fall in love with Back in the Day, and Think Twice had me hooked. It's worth buying even if this one wasn't as good as Mama's Gun and Baduizm, because she deserves the support anyway. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Each song has a unique title
The music flows smoothly. They're really good.. sometimes when I feel upset or moody, this CD can calm me down. All I do is just lay on my bed, watch the ceiling (or maybe close my eyes), and listen to this album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Maxwell's subtle majestic funk even deeper than it's predecessor The Suite
Yes! Yesterday, three days before it's official release in Europe, I found Maxwell's new album in several recordstores in my hometown, just below Amsterdam in Holland. Ofcourse I didn't hesitate buying it and I haven't stopped listened to it since. As a matter of fact I'm listening to it right now! When I compare my first listening experience of Embrya with the Suite, I must say, there's a big difference. I dug the Suite at once. There has been this spell from the beginning. I was filled with enthusiasm by his majestic funk from the very very first note I heard. An enthusiasm that hasn't weakened since. It has been my most played album since it's release back in '96. However the first listening round for Embrya was a bit of a disappointment. I didn't know what to think, what to feel. The production was beautifully done, as always. It's crystal clear, subtle and deep. For a moment I feared he might have overdone it. Most of the songs seemed less accessible, less catchy and more demanding than on the Suite. So after this first listening round I couldn't help thinking that this might be one of these albums that have to grow on you. So I played it again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again... and my conclusion less than 24 hours later has to be, Maxwell: you did it! You came up with the perfect follow up to the Suite. The growth is obvious. Not only musically, but also thematically. The songs are deeper and more spiritual than on the first album, thus more complex. That's why it took a bit longer for me to appreciate them. My favourites for now are 'Matrimony/Arroz con pollo', the latter being no less than 'Matrimony part 2'. The horn riffs and the rhythm guitars on it are as funky as funky can get. 'Know these things' must be his most delicate song to date. It's beautiful! 'Eachoureachsecondetc' is also one of my favourites. The album starts with the lovely intro of 'Everwanting' that builds the tension beautifully, just like the extended intro of 'Ascension' during his live performances. It makes you want to stand up and pledge allegiance to Maxwell's Majestic Funk. So Maxwellians, take your time with this new jewel. It deserves that. But beware, it might prove to be even more addictive than it's predesessor. By the way: Although there are lyrics of it in the booklet 'Gestation:mythos' isn't on the album... or is it? Remember the surprising 'Til the cops' reprise on the Suite? Well, there's one of those on this one as well, only less obvious. You may want to rewind your cd player just before 'Everwanting' starts. Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fans of good music will love this CD, regardless of their musical preferences.
I've never been a big hip hop/R&B fan, but this CD is amazing. Some favorites of mine include "Searching," "Apple Tree" and "Other Side of the Game."One song that stands out is "On and On," which segues into a discussion about cyphers and Egypt, only to flow into "Apple Tree.""Tyrone" appears on the CD twice, once live and once as studio track. The live track is great, but the studio version is out of place on a live album.I understand the studio version was intended to be the single to promote the album, but it doesn't flow well with the live material.I didn't like the finale "Next Lifetime" either. It's a great song, but Miss Badu stretches it out for 15 minutes to finish the show in a dramatic gesture, which by that point is unnecessary. All in all it's a great CD, and it encouraged me to check out other Erykah Badu music, and I haven't been disappointed. This is an artist who will stand the test of time and isn't going anywhere soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars that voice !
Get this for onlytwo reasons. The live vocals of Ms Badu are as soulful as any to come in the last twenty years ( and her band ain't bad either - tight and full of da funk). The bonus is the inclusion of the extended studio version of Tyrone, perhaps the best kiss off I've ever heard. ... Read more

Editorial Review

D'Angelo is obviously inspired by the progressive soul of the early '70s, but he has also borrowed carefully from the hip-hop of his own generation. Like many of his contemporaries, he has recorded a tribute to marijuana--the album's title--but it's far wittier than most. It takes the form of a conventional love song ("Brown sugar babe, I gets high off your love ... that's why my eyes are a shade blood burgundy") and mimics intoxication in its throbbing bass lines and reverb-heavy organ. Another song, with a title too profane to print, is a blunt tale of infidelity and murder, but in contrast to most rap fantasies, D'Angelo's blues-like narrative acknowledges such acts have serious consequences.Best of all is the Prince-like "Higher," which combines the spiritual love of God and the carnal love of a woman into one dizzying, organ-fueled hymn. D'Angelo is still rather clumsy with lyrics, and he leans too heavily on ballads over dance numbers, but he has enough talent to grow in any of several directions. It will be an exciting story to follow and one would be foolish to miss the first chapter. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Classic in the Neo-Soul Genre
D'Angelo's "Brown Sugar" has got to be one of the best neo-soul albums of all time. Definitely one of the best albums in the past 12 years. It dropped in 1995, and since then he dropped "Voodoo" in 2000. I also have Voodoo as well, and it's a great album too but it falls just short of this amazing Brown Sugar. Since I've just recently branched out of just general R&B music (since I'm a big fan of almost everything that you can apply an R&B tag to except for club feature-a-rapper-in-my-song-so-it-will-sell R&B now) I've never really heard of D'Angelo before. So what best to do than to get on Amazon and check the album out? So I see all the good reviews claiming that this is a classic album, so I decided to download it. Well trust me, if you are an R&B/Soul fan, you don't have to download this, go straight out and buy it (it's only $10.00 here). It's worth every bit of your money.
3-0 out of 5 stars If You Want Bedroom Soul, Add 2 More Stars
Nobody would ever accuse D'Angelo of going anywhere in a hurry. Believe me, Brown Sugar owes nothing to the Rolling Stones except the shared title, and while the Stones' song invoked images of sexual enslavement, D'Angelo's version is purely consensual. The title is song is slow and blistering, and it establishes the pace for the entire album. Each song moves at the speed of slow sex, which makes it fairly impressive accompaniment for same. Out of the bedroom, though, this collection can get pretty tedious.
4-0 out of 5 stars I (almost) never give five stars ...
But D'Angelo probably comes closest this side of Michael Jackson's masterpieces back in tha day (not to say that the two are even in the same category artistically).

4-0 out of 5 stars Different
This CD is not typical female R&B run of the mill blah. It has a Outkast feel with edgy hook crazy songs.Trick Me is insanely addictive. Her rapping isn't bad either.Milkshake while campy and repetitive is a infamous classic.Keep It Down has some rock to it that you never hear on a R&B CD.If you are looking for Beyonce type ballads or Pussycat Dolls tease-the-boys songs, then stay away. But if you want something with a different flavor, then try Kelis.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Tasty" Brings Flavour At The Cost Of Some Quality!
After seeing her floptastic sophomore effort "Wanderland" fail to see the light of day in America & many other countries, Kelis is back with "Tasty" another unconventional mix of R&B, Hip-Hop, Pop & Rock. Despite calling in for help from the likes of Andre 3000 (of Outkast fame), Raphael Saadiq, Dame Grease, Dallas Austin and Rockwilder (amongst others) for 9 of the album's 14 tracks, "Tasty" takes a much more commercial route than "Kaleidoscope" & "Wanderland". Ironically though, this album fails to sound as eclectic as her insanely unconventional debut.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Calming Album Available
This is my favorite album in my collection. By far the best Neo-Soul album at all. All the songs are FULL of soul. Floetic is a really cool up beat song. Ms. Stress is my favorite song on the album, it's nice and slow and has really nice lyrics. When I hear this album, I could just lay back for countless hours and zone out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most people are confused... just to clarify.
Floetry wrote "Butterflies" for Michael Jackson. They recorded the demo and then let him record it for his 2001 album "Invincible." Floetry then used the track, that again, *they* wrote, on 2002's "Floetic," as well as their live album. It is not Michael's song. That's a common misconception, so no, Floetry isn't trying to rip off Michael's version.

My intro to this lovely birdsong was at a live concert prior to my even knowing who she was.I was so blown away that I had to buy her CD that night and luckily she was in an autographing mode!I will keep that cover long after I wear the CD out!She is such an awesome talent!!If you love jazz of any sort you will find something to enjoy on all of her CDs and if you just love music....you will love everything she has done from scat to jazz to freestyle.I love this CD in particular, though. But have bought her other CD as well!Keep up stocking her music!

3-0 out of 5 stars Larrieux's Debut
"Infinite Possibilities", what a title for an album. The title alone made me want to listen to this piece of work. That, and the fact that I kept hearing her name from neo-soul fans. I knew who she was because she was the voice of the group Groove Theory. After listening to this album, I see why she has her own fan base, she's very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic R & B from Carl Thomas & Bad Boy Records..............
Still in my cd rotation 6 years later. This one of those cds that you through in on a lazy rainy day when you're chilling with your girl. Carl delivers with bangers such as Emotional, I Wish, Lady Lay, Summer Rain, and much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Last of a dying breed
Carl Thomas a true singer, song writer, and performer. He is all R&B and soul has left. Not since the likes of Sam Cooke or Marvin Gaye have you witnessed such original vocal inflection from a soul recording artist. Carl is the truth, without all of the un-needed sex appeal or male bravado found in todays R&B "Recording Acts". I have seen Carl perform several times and he is truly amazing. Sadly Carl may never reach his zenith that all of his true fans anticipate. Carl is on the wrong label and the powers that govern our music industry has made love and love music out of style. It is my most sincere wish that a movie director or producer takes Carl's enormous talent and applies it to a movie music score where perhaps his thoughtful lyrics can come to life on the big screen. Both of his albums are bonified classics in my eyes and for these great accomplishments in music, Carl has been all together ignored by the recording industry. His work on his 1st album and diverse singing ability has recently been mimicked by the likes of John Legend hiding behind the guise of that piano on "Ordinary people". Give Carl's "Special Lady" a listen or sing it aloud and watch as people reply "Your singing a John Legend song"? (What a shame)The sad part is guys like John Legend would never admit to Carl's musical influence. Carl, your days of prominennce in music have not arrived and for all your true fans "Don't give up on us" Keep kicking that door down until the world truly takes notice of your amazing talent. I'm looking forward to another amazing soulful R&B album this year.:)paradyme1@msn.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
This was an impressive debut by Carl Thomas, to say the least. His voice is smooth and he has an excellent range. This album is perfect for relaxation and at the same, you listen to a "top notch" vocalist.Cuts from the album like, "Giving You All My Love," "Emotional" and "Summer Rain" demonstrate Carl's ability to sing in a tone that goes perfect with the music. It's a shame there are quite a few samples on the album, mostly because "P. Diddy" produced it, but Carl makes each and every song his own.Cuts like, "Come to Me" and "Supastar" sound like classic R&B cuts from the 70s that display Carl's impressive vocal range. This is one of my favorite R&B albums of all time and a must have for any true R&B fan. ... Tweet is the classic show-biz story: an overnight sensation 10 years in the making. The sultry singer/songwriter traveled a long and twisted path to success, one that brought her in contact with Missy Elliott, who years later tracked her old friend down and rescued her from obscurity. The resulting effort is a crystal-clear triumph, much more old-school soul than contemporary R&B. Aside from the dance-driven "Oops (Oh My)," Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flying South
The debut, Southern Hummingbird, from Tweet showcases her talents as an artist, writer and producer. Also co-Executive producing alongside mentors Missy Elliot and Timbaland, Tweet took control of the project with a sense of personality and identity all her own.Giving a bit of her life and what she has overcome "So Much To Say (Intro)" defines what is to come and the selection of subjects.Inviting someone over on "My Place" she calls out to share a moment over a slow, mood setting track."Smoking Cigarettes" continues with the same pace as she sends a clear message with lyrics "...sometimes my eyes won't close from weeping / sometimes I can't wake up from sleeping..." as she waits to hear from a love.Featuring Bilal, "Best Friend", is a good combination as they both describes each other without derailing from the continuous flow of the prior songs.Maybe overshadowed by the guitars deep and rich feel on "Always Will".Yet the arrangement gives this album a shade of epic proportions."Boogie 2Nite" is one of those feel good songs to make you get up and move as "Make Ur Move". The two songs are strikingly similar as far as the plateau, mood and tempo. One of the four produced by Timbaland, "Oops (Oh My) featuring Missy Elliot is one of the highlights for the album as Tweet touches the subject of masturbation and or self gratification as "Sexual Healing (Oops Pt.2) featuring Ms. Jade. The acoustic guitar driven track "Motel" with the absence of supporting instruments allowed Tweet's vocals to be the strength and focus."Beautiful" is just that.Simple piano chords as the foundation of the song compliment her talents as well as the subject at hand."Complain" is a hidden gem with a hint of reality included in the contents.Just the opposite in "Heaven" as she describes her new life separated from a love.Speeding up with off-beat production on "Call Me" informs what is necessary whenever you need her company."Drunk" is rather simple as well but is a remarkable with her octave and the mix of a winding road."Southern Hummingbird (Outro)" is a thank you and shout outs track concluding the album. This album isn't shadowing Missy's success and has an identity all of its own with a mature, relaxing sound.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Mess
Their was 3 good songs on this album. This album was a hot ass mess, I don't see how people could call this a classic or even like it. Thats why Ashanti SMOKED her ass and now Tweet is nowhere to be seen! Do yourself a favor and buy the hottest album to come out in 2002 and a CLASSIC Contemporary RnB Album in Ashanti!

5-0 out of 5 stars Work of Art, Even 4 Years Later!
Tweet has the most soulful voice I have ever heard and to this day I can still listen to the whole CD and love it just like when I heard it in 2002. To this day, it's still my favorite album.

the cd is off the hook. I have always been a fan, and when i ordered this cd it brought back all those good memories.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Could I Forget
This album was the perfect selection for me. I was only about 10 when they TTT really hit is big, at that point I was really getting into them and then they disbanded. So to play this album bring back a lot of memories for me. Although I am the at the age when hip hop should be my life, the R&B acts of the 90's are classics to me. To re-introduce their music makes me a little bitter sweet because there is nothing after this. I am a big fan of Raphael Saadiq solo act so I still have a little joy. I am a big fan of live music and bands so just about everything that they have done I love.
5-0 out of 5 stars This LP is worthy! worthi! worthee!
Tony! Toni! Tone! was THE post-New Edition, pre-Boyz II Men & Jodeci "IT" group of R&B of the late 1980s/early 1990s.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Kaleidoscope" Being Underrated Is An Understatement In Its Own Self! 5 STARS!
It took me a while to adjust to Kelis' debut album "Kaleidoscope", but in the end, its eclecticism and quirky catchiness won me over. What surprises me more than anything, however, is how she's failed to consistently maintain commercial presence, and how she's so similar, yet so different, to Beyonce.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind
This is the album that introduced the world to Kelis. Her ecletic style has been copied by Gwen Stefani, Pink, Nelly Furtado, Fergie and countless others. Kelis has always managed to stay one step ahead of the game. This debut was unlike anything any female esp. in 1999 would dare put out. While the Neptunes and Kelis has parted ways as of 2004, this is an excellent album for those post Neptunes fans. Kelis is as angry as any black woman scorned on lead single, "Caught Out There" famous for the line "I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW!" She's contemplative about a fading relationship in "Get Along With You." She compares her love to that of a "Mafia" and so on. Nice album with pulsating beats mixed with Kelis' smooth and sometimes distraught vocals make for one of the most overlooked albums of 1999. It makes me wish I would of picked it up a lot sooner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kaleidoscope
I love Kelis' approach to her music - she refuses to be classified as just another "r&b chick" and from this disc to her upcoming release, always pushes the boundaries which creates some interesting music indeed!I was intrigued enough by the single, CAUGHT OUT THERE that I took a chance and bought the entire disc which as a whole, did not disappoint.

Its BETTER live. These girls are absolutely Amazing.I have seen them in concert a few times and it's always a very impressive and soulful event.I can't even put into words how GRATEFUL I am that these two women... these two styles... these two prospectives... have come together.I am a poet, a writer, and this music is truly food for the soul. The words are so meaningful, in depth, never shallow!Always meeting expectation. In fact, its hard for them NOT to meet expectations because what they are producing is so real, it's just Life... feelings... Emotions... they are performing Spoken Word over emotional melodies... They bring a much needed breath of fresh air to the industry.I am most definitely a supporter of Floetry and I can only hope and pray these women continue to bring quality sounds to my, our, ears.If you're not a fan of floetry... or critique them the way some of these reviews do (And I respect the fact that we all have our opinion) but if you are leaning toward the negative in regard to these two women and their art, then you are looking way to deep, and I feel sorry that you have to try that hard to understand them, and still fail to... If this is you, then the meaning of what they are doing, the concept and value of what they are bringing to their audience is totally passing you by...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pair
Floetry is awesome. I have a friend who plays the DVD every night b4 bed and I had never even heard this live before. Marsha has vocals out of this world. She flat out sang, never wavered with her strength, stamina, condition of her voice. She was hitting all types of notes. Honestly, I'm not used to Brits being talented. You should see the mockery of true talent with bogus musicians on "X Factor". That's why I know there was only space for Floetry to shine in the U.S. Natalie was flowing and there was a point and time where they tag teamed like ad- libbed word for note. That was tight. Only problem was sometimes Marsha would over-kill with runs and not settle down. Plus, I have a problem if you can only play a CD or DVD from Track 6 and on.... ... Read more
