3-0 out of 5 stars ok then
I understand that people enjoy this album. I myself like a lot of the tracks a lot and am impressed with timbaland's work, but I don't understand how people can rank this as one of the best when artists like michael jackson and prince did it much better and justin is ripping them off. I guess it's cooler to like justin cause he's younger but to say he's the best when he's really manufactured and works with a bunch of big names that produce most of his work and wardrobe for him is not fair.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Tell me which way you like that", JT is back with solo CD #2
I never have a problem telling people that I never liked N Sync. The only 2 songs that I ever liked that they did were "This I Promise You" and "Gone". It even took alot of convincing from a friend of mine that liked music to buy "Justified".He told me that the CD had a r&b feel to it although N Sync strictly did pop music 99.9% of the time.Once I purchased "Justified", I was impressed by Mr. JT, as Timbaland called him on "(Oh No) What You Got)". My favorite tracks ended up being "Last Night", "Take It From Here", "Still On My Brain", "Like I Love You" w/Clipse, and "Cry Me A River" as well as, "(Oh No) What You Got".
5-0 out of 5 stars The Sexy was already here, but I likes it!!!!!!!!!!
This is probably the third greatest CD in the history of the world, behind Hasselhoff(just put them all under one title because they are all unreal) and Centerfield by John Fogerty. JT is just off tha hook with dance jams that make me breakdance like I won't get dinner if I don't slap the room around with a moonwalk. He also slows it down so you can come in high and tight with your sweet muffin. Squeeze the muffin turbo! I'm a great dancer, I know that is assumed, but this CD takes me to another level not seen since Boogaloo Shrimp tore the wall off the place in Breakin 2, electric boogaloo. I walked into my favorite club the other night, Frankendance, and "Sexyback" was playing on the system. I took off my sequin robe and it was Mcbowlerpimp cold lampin. I was doing moves that no one had ever seen or smelled before. I moonwalked in a rhombus pattern!! There was no name for that so we called it chunderwinkles. I was on fire, so they sprayed me down with an extinguisher and I kept going. I was getting women's numbers in the middle of dance moves. I know, you can't pull that off. Jabs had to grab a pen and paper because I couldn't keep up with all of the offers of love for the evening. I can take the game to levels not seen since Ricky Schroeder on Silver Spoons. I tell you this story to lay out my only complaint about this CD. JT didn't bring the "sexy" back. I ran a newspaper ad in July of 2003 declaring that I had decided to bring the sexy back. I was laying low for awhile and locked the sexy in a treasure chest like a pirate would have. I didn't think the world was ready for sexy with everything going on in the middle east. In July of 03, I figured I would take the sexy out of the box and bring it back. I brought it back at 10 lies in 03. It was front page news in the Syracuse paper the next day. Sexy was back. I'm OK with JT taking it worldwide, but I thought I would let everyone know what's up. Average and me were close when I was 4, but I moved 3 time zones from it the next year and haven't looked back. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars VERY OVERRATED........
I just don't get all the praise for this cd.I approached this project very enthusiastically and was very disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars I was questionable...
At first I wasnt sure what to expect from Christina this time around but she gave me a HUGE surprise with Back to Basics. The first cd is just as good as the 2nd. I must say that the 2nd disc inspired me to go to church! LOL thats how good her vocals are. She is inspiring and proves that she belongs in the music industry for years to come. Good job

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable CD set. Great songs, great voice, andgreat spirit.
This is a truly remarkable CD set. I grew up listening to Bessie Smith, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Motown singers (no, I'm not that old, I was just the guy dressed like a punk rocker, and liking the Sex Pistols, but actually loving classic Jazz, Blues, and R&B best after being introduced to them by a guy I became friendly with who was a music teacher). It is fairly remarkable to see this diminutive woman and pop phenom known for her slightly raunchy Hip-Hop songs show her true range. From the first time I heard Aguilera several years ago I thought: "This woman really has a set of pipes, I wonder if she'll ever begin to explore her full range." Well she has, and the result is wonderful. I have a feeling it must have been infuriating for her to be in the shadow of that Spears chick, the fellow Mouseketeer, who was all package but really didn't have the voice or style to sing anything real in any idiom. Aguilera pays homage to her antecedents; the numbers stylized versions, some deliberately recorded to simulate the kind of "in the can" sound you encounter when you hear an old Tin Pan Alley classic. Still, these songs remain hers. I am quite astounded. I doubt this album will appeal to many people much over forty. I think even octogenarians would be rocking in their walkers, if they gave it a chance, but that probably won't happen. What I hope is that Aguilera's fan base in their teens and early twenties will be inspired to listen to songs like Dinah Washington's version of "Cry Me a River" or Billie Holiday's "Mean To Me" and know where Aguilera is really coming from. Aguilera is a student of the Masters who came before her (she lays this out so well in the Hip-Hop styled intro), yet she can also deliver the goods. It gives me real hope. Not everything in the music business is, in the end, prepackaged, and there are those out there still carrying the torch and passing it on. Kudos to Aguilera! She may be a tiny woman, but she has a giant voice, and a real spirit. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For me a little Aaron Neville goes a long way
When I came across "Bring It On Home..The Soul Classics" I found that I simply could not resist. Here were 13 of the most memorable tunes in the history of soul being sung by a man who has been at his craft for more than 40 years.Sounded like a sure winner to me.Rather what I found was a disc that I would have to describe as a bit of a disappointment. This one is simply not all that it is cracked up to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Liquid honey....
is Neville's voice.I recently saw him at a local venue, where he performed a lot of the music on this fine CD.I hadn't purchased any Neville music since his great jazz memories album, "Nature Boy" -- but I went right out and bought this.Neville's not afraid to remake Sam Cooke or Percy Sledge, and his take on "Stand By Me" and with Chris Botti's trumpet on a new mix for "Rainy Night In Georgia" permeate your thoughts and just about make you forget the originals.Neville did this CD as a tribute to Katrina victims, and his own family's difficulties as the result of the storm.A consummate performer, with a voice that just doesn't quit, Neville is even more at home with sould classics than he is with gospel or jazz.Run, don't walk, to buy this CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cover Songs With A Twist
There are quite a few albums lately with artists covering songs already made famous by other artists. This is one of the better ones because it's a totally new interpretation of older hits. It kicks off with the classic 'Rainy Night In Georgia' and you've never heard it done like this before. With the different arrangements, etc, it's totally awesome as is "Dock Of The Bay'. Neville's falsetto can be sometimes quite annoying but he keeps it slightly under wraps here. An album worth buying. ... Read more

Janet Jackson opens her much-hyped, post-wardrobe-malfunction return to the studio with the following proclamation: "I've covered a lot in my 20 years, and I've uncovered a lot in my 20 years." There's a pause, then a giggle. And then comes an honest breakdown of this disc's DNA: "I want to have fun," chimes Janet (or J., or Miss Jackson if you're nasty and can remember that far back). Fun, then, is what we get. With a light heart, a light vocal touch, and no shortage of quips and unstaged-sounding between-song cut-ups, Janet and her Jermaine Dupri-helmed posse pull together a Sunday afternoon picnic of a disc: "Enjoy," among Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathe, Feel Sensual, Imagine It Or Make It Happen!
While the years have passed and artists have come and gone few have remained but a few. Janet Jackson has been around longer than most and this album is her celebration of how she's covered a lot in her 20 years. This CD is about having fun, not being serious, and just feeling great!
4-0 out of 5 stars JANET'S BACK!!!
hey i just bought this cd from here, got it today... i must say ur reviews did help me in this purchase. I was not always a big fan , but i do love her older work Rhymthm nation and velvet rope are my favs. This cd is very good and quite surprising to me., because i was not fond of the single call on meat first but it grew on me and it was not till i heard so excited that i was interested in buying this cd. So u should definitly pick this up!!! U wont be sorry:)
4-0 out of 5 stars One of Janet's best
For the first time since her "Control" album Janet Jackson uses Executive Producers other than Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis; Jermaine Dupri takes the lead role this time around. I have Janet's entire disography so you can trust me when I say that this is one of her best albums to date. The lyrics aren't really deep or profound, the production isn't the best in the world, and she's very breathy with her voice, but there's something special about it. The album sticks with the listener long after hearing the tracks. Typically, a Janet Jackson album has some depth to it, some social issues, abuse, or even "taking control", but the subject matter on this album is very light. This is probably her simpliest album lyrically.

Born to be mild? Amos Lee's sophomore effort for Blue Note follows firmly in the gentle guitar strums of his well-received 2005 debut and opening slots for Norah Jones and Bob Dylan. Little has changed the second time around, which will come as a relief to those enthralled by his first release. He remains a sensitive sort, mixing his insightful, reflective lyrics with lovely, unforced melodies played by backing musicians that stay on low boil. These tunes go down as smoothly as hot chocolate on a cold day, yet Lee brings an unassuming sincerity to the proceedings with his cozy, amiable voice. Comparisons to Bill Withers and James Taylor are accurate if inevitable, but when the gospel organ quivers into "Skipping Stone," it's clear Lee isn't stuck in a folk-pop rut.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Follow Up CD to "Amos Lee"
I love this CD. I love the fact that Amos Lee is the type of artist who is true to his music and although he may not be considered "mainstream", music lovers will "get him" and his style. Sometimes, as I listen to the music of today,I get dishearted because I find no value in the music, no artistry. Well, "Supply and Demand" confirms to me that their is still real, thought provoking, moving, engaging, and creative artists around.Like his previous CD "Amos Lee", I love the lyrics in the songs."Shout Out Loud" is a great song to open with, and my teenagers ask me to play it over and over again...I have many favorites, including "Shout Out Loud", "Skipping Stone", "Supply and Demand", "Sweet Pea" ...o.k., I love the whole CD....In an age where you may get 1 or 2 songs on a CD that you really like, this CD is filled with songs you will love...Buy it, then enjoy!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This CD is a great follow up to his last CD. There are very few artists with the originality that Amos Lee has. If you enjoy any folk or easy listening this is a definite must to add to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an entertaining new CD from Amos Lee
I love this new CD from Amos Lee.The first single is entitled Shout Out Loud. This song really puts me in a great mood. His guitar playing is so energetic here.My favorite track is Long Line Of Pain though. It is a beautiful song about personal loss and loneliness. Sympathize is an another highlight on this disc.Amos Lee's subtle voice is filled with compassion for people who are down on their luck.Southern Girl is Amos' tribute to thecharm of a girl from the south.Night Train is a very pretty love song. Skipping Stone is a bluesy sounding song about trying to move on after the loss of a loved one.Freedom is an interesting track. It is a reminder that the pursuit offreedom should not lead to violence. The lyrics of this song are true and thought provoking. Sweet Pea is a simple and sweet song about coming home to someone special.Careless is an excellent song about the betrayal of a friend.I love the feeling of loss and sense ofhurt in Amos' voice on this track. Supply and Demand is a very entertaining CD by a talented young musician and song writer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gladys Sings The Blues
This jazzy album should not be a surprise to anyone who's followed her career. Her voice can be extremely strong or whispery. Her phrasing is perfection itself. Take a listen to her rendition of 'Stormy Weather'. Of themany many versions of this old standard I've heard, I prefer this one. 'I'll Be Seeing You' and 'Someone To Watch Over Me' are also over the top. Great big band, great big voice and great big songs add up to one fantastic album.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not her best work
When I heard DejaVu, I thought her CD was gonna be off the chain. I was anticipating her release date. I bought it the very fisrt day. Her CD is nothing compared to her first. Dont get me wrong, she has a fews songs on there that you can get down too. DejaVu, Get me bodied, Upgrade U, Irreplaceable, and Listen are the only songs on her CD that I can listen too with out turning. All the others I think the beats sound the exact same. You can tell who produced what. She said that this is her best CD. I think the total opposite. Dangerously in Love was her best. She showed everyone that she not only can sing R&B, but different genres as well (Rock, Pop) and they still all sounded good. You can ride to the whole CD. B'Day she only stuck with with one genre, and not only that the songs did sound the same. There are not enough songs on the CD, and not enought slow songs. I think she rushed it being that it only took her 2 weeks to record. I am a true Beyonce fan, but I think she should have took more time, and she could've done a whole lot better.

3-0 out of 5 stars What Happened to Beyonce'?
Jay-Z has ruined her. Anybody seen that video where he has her dancing around like some crazed African princess? It looks ridiculous and is way frenetic. I got dizzy watching it. Plus the cover photo of this CD looks like some third rate product from the 1960's. Beyonce, dump Jay-Z and get back to your roots. I like her old stuff much better than this but three stars because hey, it IS Beyonce'.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs an "Upgrade"
This album was a real let down from Dangerously in Love. You'd expect a more mature, grown sound, still without alienating her younger fan base. Yet instead we got remedial Destiny's Child lyrics circa "Bills, Bills, Bills" & "Bugaboo". Sure, you can dance to most of the tracks; great club beats. But for all that she is hyped up to be (the next Diana Ross), she needs an "Upgrade" HERSELF. ... Read more

I was hesitant to buy this CD.After hearing BEP and what they had to offer, I wondered how Fergie would do on her own.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I must say that the great thing about Fergie, is she can actually sing. She does showcase that talent on several songs here. While im not a big fan of raping songs much anymore, those are good as well. You really need to listen to this cd a couple times to enjoy, ill admit i downloaded it once and was like ugh. But then i relistened to each song and found myself truly liking the cd. Its just like any cd really you have to listen to a few times to really get the feel of the artist. I like her singing in Wild Orchid so i guess i really like the songs more where she actually sings. I was never really a big fan of London Bridge, but i suppose i see why she released it.

John Legend proves that he is indeed capable of living up to the tall prophesy of his name (adopted or otherwise) on this great new album featuring a smorgasbord of songs that recall everyone from Otis Redding to Lauren Hill to Jeff Buckley. Some of the songs may be a tad too long, and "Coming Home" feels middle-of-the-road, but these are minor quibbles for an album studded with standout tracks.Destined for multiple Grammys. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmoirized!! This boy has soul!!
I don't know what I was expecting with this cd, but I didn't expect to be floored. Robin has definately filled a musical void in today's R&B, and music period. He is a true artist and musician.I can hear his influences, but he still maintains his own individuality. This cd is holding my cd player captive right now, and will be on heavy rotation for long time.i'm hoping that they don't try to market him to be a immitation ofJustin Timberlake, though.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Eminem of R&B and Soul?
I could easily see Robin Thicke receiving that title with this masterpiece here. The album is fantastic, and a showcase of what's missing in R&B today. While many are likely to compare him Justin Timberlake, the fact of the matter is that the two artists are in two different classes. Comparing Thicke to Timberlake is similar to comparing Usher to Marvin Gaye, or any of the greats from back in the day. Speaking of those greats, Thicke emulates quite a few of them while still maintaining a bit of his own sound. Keep in mind that he is a singer/songwriter and has produced hits for many artists, including the young JoJo, who's latest I also recommend. There are only really two tracks that I always skip on the CD, namely All Night Long and Everything I Can't Have. The latter seems a bit out of place on the album with heavy latin jazz influence. It's... just weird. Sometimes I will listen to it, but I rarely get through the entire thing. As for the former, I pretty much detest Lil' Wayne, although I can't explain why I like Shooter. Cocaine is also one of my lesser favorites, possibly because it's a bit on the funky side, and I have to be in a certain mood for funk. Lost Without U is my main favorite, with 2 The Sky, a bit of a gospel song, coming in as a second. I'm kind of glad that Pharrell Williams didn't have too much involvement with the album as it probably would have changed the album completely. An excellent album. Defintely worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT COMPARE THICKE TO JUSTIN
This album is Hot to Death.Thicke is crazy talented and Justin just had good dacnes moves.Thicke is crazy talented and lyrically, Justin can't shine his shoes.Check this out if you miss really good music and diverse production."Ask MySelf" is HOT TO DEATH..My favorite track!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Cocaine"- That guitar and base makes it hard to stay drug free! JUST KIDDING!( seriously drug addictions ruin lives, If you are reading this and are struggling please call 1 800 784 6776 ) but I like this track a lot.THE BASS IS N-A-S-T-Y!!!!!!!!The faith track is ridic."Lost without you" is Whoa! When I use to think of Nelly Furtado I couldn't help but automtically start singing "I'm like a bird". That's all she ever was to me, the girl who sang the bird song. However, I heard, and I kid you not, a 4 second sound clip of Promiscuous in the middle of a store and right then decided I needed this CD. I stalled for the longest time though because I just knew it would be a waste of money. A sudden urge and extra cash summed up my purchase of this CD though. I don't regret it at all. Sure there are some parts that tend to drag a little more than I'd like but for the most part, Nelly has created something special with Loose.
1-0 out of 5 stars Nellie didn't reinvent herself
The music business did. Nellie Furtado is gorgeous, always has been, but I used to respect her music. The industry did the same thing to her as they did to Jewel. They took a fresh, folky act and transformed her into an electronic joke made to sound like everyone else with a top 40 record. That is a shame because she has a great deal of talent. Put her with Timberland and surprise, she's like Fergie and every other fake artist in the game. I know you're asking me what I know about the game. I haven't had many top 40 hits in my life, in fact I haven't had any, but I front some of the best cover bands in southeast Nebraska. My band is called Blisterpuss(the last part is pronounced like bus, but with a "p"). We do covers of bands like Dishwalla, Counting Crows and Live. People in the business have told us we need to be more like 98 degrees or Justin Timberlake if we are ever going to play venues like North Platte or Hamburg, Iowa. Granted, it's tempting to sell out to play places that bring in crowds over 100, but if we did that could we live with ourselves? Jabs might be able to because he seems destined for bigger things since he plays drums and bass guitar at the same time, but the rest of us don't want to compromise what makes us who we are. Sure, we could cover Hasselhoff and win crowds over in a heartbeat, but Hasselhoff's music is in a holy place we are not allowed to touch. So we crank out what we know and fans are all up on us.

Danity Kane's concept isn't revolutionary--bind five gorgeous, vocally gifted girls together at the hip and the world is bound to take notice--but its role as a reality TV band is: Here, finally, is the reason to stop raking contestants over the coals and accept that the tube can spawn some seriously hot music. 4-0 out of 5 stars Leave the Trench & Shades at Home
I am a 28-year-old mother of three and I'll have to admit, I just about went to the store in a trench coat and dark shades to buy this CD! I was thinking this was just too "teeny-bopper" for me. Yet, the Making the Band 3 series had me real curious to see what the final product would be. And to my surprise, this album was not a let down at all! I loved the first rack and it had me going all the way to the end! There are a few snoozers on the album, but for the most part, worth the buy (without the disguise).

2-0 out of 5 stars Lukewarm
I was a fan of the show and really liked all the girls that made the group. I think they are all very talented, beautiful, and are ready to work hard to make it in this business. With that said, I was rather disappointed with the CD.. Some of the tracks don't sound very "clean", they sound like drafts still rather than being polished. There are a couple of good tracks on there but I'm surprised that with the kind of talent that went into creating this record that it doesn't sound better. I don't think that's the girls' fault though but rather production.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent debut!! Definately worth the wait!
I first heard Danity Kane's songs on the show Making the Band 3. I watched the show religiously for the two seasons that these extremely talented girls have been there. I really liked the samples of the songs I heard so when I bought the album I was absolutely not disappointed. I love that it is so upbeat and fun(although there are a couple of slower songs). I constantly find myself dancing and rocking my head with the beat of these tracks(People in the cars next to me on the highway must think i'm insane)! I can honestly say that I really like every single song on this album A LOT! Diddy has really found magic in these 5 women. Their voices are absolutely beautiful and the mixture of them is entrancing! I can't wait to see what they create next! ... Read more

The lead voice of Stax Records' powerhouse soul duo Sam and Dave returns to reclaim his legacy here with a collection of familiar r&b catalog choices framed by slick, decidedly contemporary productions. If the project's crowded supporting cast -- Springsteen, Clapton, Wynonna, Sting, Bon Jovi, Winwood, Paul Rodgers, Mariah Carey, Vince Gill and Billy Gibbons among the most notable -- sometimes makes Moore seem like a guest on his own album, their admittedly marketing-driven presence nonetheless helps showcase a seminal soul artist for an Read more

This record should have been done without ANY guests! Mariah Carey's vocals on "Make Believe" ruin the track...Sam sounds great throughout-Call Buddy Miller!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sam Moore and Company CD is Excellent
Sam Moore's new CD is a welcome return to the roots of soul. This CD has got IT!Sam's voice is superb and the duets he does with his guests are wonderful.I'm not a fan of country music so I was a bit fearful of what Wynona and Travis Tritt would do with Sam.Wow!Are they ever good!Wynona's got it.I'm going to listen to more of her now.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not all duets are made in Heaven....
Sam's voice is still in decent shape, but this set is just awkward. Star studded album isn't always the best way to cash in on an againg star. The last great album Sam did was over 30 years ago and that's the one you need to get (Plenty Good Lovin': The Lost Solo Album).

5-0 out of 5 stars Solomon's Country Heart
As a previous reviewer already pointed out, at least in terms of artistic depth if not style, Nashville is a worthy successor to the wonderful "Don't Give Up On Me."
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS WILL BE YOUR FAVORITE FOR 2006
Solomon Burke singing country is the best thing to happen to Nashville.Take an artist who is always exactly who he is, bring in the finest producer (Buddy Miller), the finest musicians and writers and the finest duet pairings (Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin and Patty Loveless) to surround him and 14 songs later, you have yourself your favorite cd - like an old friend. It isn't Solomon Burke "playing cowboy."It is Solomon Burke being Solomon Burke and offering a point of view that fervently honors country music.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Master At Work
I am another long-time fan of Burke's, and am rapturous over his revitalized career. 'Nashville' picks up where the brilliant 'Don't Give Up On Me' left off, with Burke again wrapping his warm, rich pipes around songs worthy of them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Monica is trying too hard.
It always surprises me when I read tons of positive comments on an album that's average/bad.Monica is great...her voice can be emotional and moving, but she doesn't take advantage of it on this album. While being ghetto can be fun (After the Storm had some "ghetto" moments--but they were good), she seems almost desperate to be viewed as thuggish on this album.Monica tries too hard to stay current--mentioning stuff like "rims" and "white T" seems forced coming from her.
5-0 out of 5 stars Makes of Me
I've been a Monica fan every since "Don't take it personal" back in 95. Like her I was 15 at the time too and I found it very easy to relate to what she was singing about. Now at 26 I can still relate to her. I think every woman that has ever been cheated on as asked themselves "Why Her" and has sung "Sideline Ho". This sounds to be a very personal album
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs in 2006!!
Please don't sleep on this CD. I have loved Monica since day 1. I have bought all her albums. But this is definitely her best thus far. I can listen to this album from beginning to end.I rarely find a CD that I don't have to skip through a song or two. Her beats, the lyrics, and her soulful voice makes this one of my favorite CDs of all time. I think I will buy 1 for my house and 1 for work. The only bad thing is that I wish she could have put more songs on the album ... Read more

Although I enjoyed some of the songs on this disc, it rarely ever makes its way into my stereo now. Some of the songs are a little slow for Pink, yet some are very catchy and melodic.Merely a decent pop cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST CD EVER!
OH My God what can I say about this CD! Nothing Short of that!! RUN GET IT AND LISTEN! Its a girls girls music! Alicia/Pink is coming across so mature and so dead honest, her music and lyrics her magic moment voice sound many different ways in all her songs here. I currently listen to this in my Suv, at home and in my Mp3! One cant helped but get pumped and want to learn every single lyric. Pink is an inspiration, she makes me want to learn to play some insturment or sing. This music here is awesome to work out to.

I would have to say this is by far P!NK's best album, replacing my first favorite "Missundastood".This album probably got the most play time of all my CD's this summer. The honest lyrics and catchy beats stick in my mind for hours of happiness.I was happy to see an equal balance of up-beat, girlpower anthems and soulful songs.A must have for every girl, woman, etc. ... Editorial Review

Given the sped-up classic soul samples with which Kanye West has made his mark, it comes as no surprise that the producer/rapper would pick a tradition-minded R&B singer as his first big pet project. Legend first made his name on Philly's incense-clouded, '70s-obsessed neo-soul scene, then found his way to New York and became West's right-hand man in the studio. His patron's pop smarts serve Legend well--while many contemporary R&B records rely too heavily on a singer's cadence and skill to carry underdeveloped tunes, Legend and West have composed genuine songs like the perky "Number One," which has a lovestruck West jabbering that he no longer believes that "my heart don't got nothing to do with my penis." (It's way more convincing than Snoop Dogg's pledge of love on the next track, "I Can Change.") And even when the melodies are slight, West slides some nasty bass lines underneath, hinting at just enough of a hip-hop sensibility to keep the album from drifting into retro nostalgia. Yet Legend is no mere producer's plaything. His voice isn't immediately distinctive; he's neither as careworn as Anthony Hamilton nor as creamy as D'Angelo. But his gift for restraint sets him apart: the sex-as-drug metaphor of the title track is hardly fresh, but Legend delivers it smoothly enough to make it work, without pressing the issue. All bedroom come-ons have been used before. This late in the game, it's a matter of how well you use 'em. --Read more

Kanye found a gem in this guy.Production is amazing, John is amazing, go get this cd now.John's whole style is great....and a breath of fresh air into the R&B genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've listened to this CD more than any other.
John Legend's "Get Lifted" is the one CD I would listen to above all others (sorry, Madonna... it's a close call). And the new single, "Save Room," I just fell head over heels for. Something in my chest tightens when I listen to it. His voice is even smoother and sexier. I love the mellowness of his sound and a beat throughout it. Unlike what you see a lot in R&B, he wouldn't "whine", he doesn't get carried away singing. His voice is very well controlled, he sings like a professional, not just to show off that he can.
4-0 out of 5 stars Impatiently Waiting for Round II
I avoided this album for the longest time due to my dislike of "Ordinary People," however after hearing "Let's Get Lifted" one day I broke down and bought the album. What a great purchase! The creativity and musicianship on this album are stellar.Legend has created an album that crosses over the normal boundaries of Soul R&B, reminding me a lot of Hill's MISEDUCATION in terms of originality, quality, and overall mood.Certainly an album worth buying and I look forward to his upcoming sophomore release. ... Log onto an India.Arie lyrics page and you won't come away expecting an easy-breezy listen--here's an artist, remember, who made a name for herself by declaring her disdain for silicone and Cristal on her 2001 debut. What's consistently a revelation for new recruits to the Arie camp, then, is how good the music makes you feel. No matter how heavy the subject matter (and it still gets heavy--God surfaces in the first verse of "Intro," the prayerful opening song), she delivers it in such a way that it ends up feeling like homespun wisdom--accessible, cloudless, and heartening. 5-0 out of 5 stars India.Arie!!!! A truely inspirational CD
This CD is truely a work of art.It has an amazing expression of feeling and is a true inspiration.Thank you to India.Arie for touching my heart and many others.I can't even begin to describe this CD but to tell you that it is a must have. Please, if you do not already own this CD, go and buy it ~ it will be a rewarding purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars I absolutely love this album; I just can't stop listening to it!
Let me start by saying that I've never been into India.Arie's music before.Perhaps I should say that I never gave it a chance.Let me tell you, I bought Testimony:Vol 1, Life & Relationship in July and didn't play it until some time in August. Why?I've asked myself that so much because when I did pop the CD in the player, I fell in love with it right from the start! It's not easy to find an album that you can really say is great from start to finish.I'm going to be real; India.Arie deserves Grammy awards for this CD.It's that good!I've played "Better People" so much 'til my 6 year old knows the words just as well as I do."I Am Not My Hair" and "The Heart Of The Matter" are also great songs. Every tune on the album makes you want to sing along but I play the aforementioned three songs the most. How can this woman be this good; she is awesome! Her album makes me wonder why I didn't give her music a chance earlier?!I really love her album!I'm trying to get to one of her concerts because I'd love to see her sing live.I recommend Testimony:Vol. 1, Life & Relationship because it's brilliantly done!Had I given this awesome album a chance a month or two earlier, I would have been able to attend her concert while she was still near my area.I would have been in for a real treat!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inida.Arie You Did It Again
Once again she has graced us with songs of life. As an old-schooler it is so nice to hear songs I can relate to, about love and relationships. Not just sex. Keep making us old-schoolers believe in the music of today. ... Read more

Though Amos Lee's music is frequently described as a fusion of folk and soul, such an equation fails to reflect the singular artistry of this impressive debut. Like labelmate Norah Jones (who guests on two cuts), the Philadelphia singer-songwriter recognizes the power of simplicity, distilling an emotional essence that cuts across categories. The opening of his "Seen It All Before" echoes Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"; the stunning "Arms of a Woman" channels Otis Redding's "I've Got Dreams to Remember"; "Give It Up" cuts a classic Bill Withers groove; "Black River" has the sound of an age-old spiritual; and the closing "All My Friends" follows Van Morrison into the mystic. Throughout the song cycle, the bare-bones arrangements behind Lee's vocal flutter reinforce an organic unity that transcends genre. For all of the debts he owes to the music of the 1960s and '70s, the results sound timeless rather than retro. In his cautionary "Soul Suckers," Lee sings that "nothing is more powerful than beauty in a wicked world"--and proceeds to prove it. Read more
