Editorial Review

Janet Jackson opens her much-hyped, post-wardrobe-malfunction return to the studio with the following proclamation: "I've covered a lot in my 20 years, and I've uncovered a lot in my 20 years." There's a pause, then a giggle. And then comes an honest breakdown of this disc's DNA: "I want to have fun," chimes Janet (or J., or Miss Jackson if you're nasty and can remember that far back). Fun, then, is what we get. With a light heart, a light vocal touch, and no shortage of quips and unstaged-sounding between-song cut-ups, Janet and her Jermaine Dupri-helmed posse pull together a Sunday afternoon picnic of a disc: "Enjoy," among Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathe, Feel Sensual, Imagine It Or Make It Happen!
While the years have passed and artists have come and gone few have remained but a few. Janet Jackson has been around longer than most and this album is her celebration of how she's covered a lot in her 20 years. This CD is about having fun, not being serious, and just feeling great!
4-0 out of 5 stars JANET'S BACK!!!
hey i just bought this cd from here, got it today... i must say ur reviews did help me in this purchase. I was not always a big fan , but i do love her older work Rhymthm nation and velvet rope are my favs. This cd is very good and quite surprising to me., because i was not fond of the single call on meat first but it grew on me and it was not till i heard so excited that i was interested in buying this cd. So u should definitly pick this up!!! U wont be sorry:)
4-0 out of 5 stars One of Janet's best
For the first time since her "Control" album Janet Jackson uses Executive Producers other than Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis; Jermaine Dupri takes the lead role this time around. I have Janet's entire disography so you can trust me when I say that this is one of her best albums to date. The lyrics aren't really deep or profound, the production isn't the best in the world, and she's very breathy with her voice, but there's something special about it. The album sticks with the listener long after hearing the tracks. Typically, a Janet Jackson album has some depth to it, some social issues, abuse, or even "taking control", but the subject matter on this album is very light. This is probably her simpliest album lyrically.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not her best work
When I heard DejaVu, I thought her CD was gonna be off the chain. I was anticipating her release date. I bought it the very fisrt day. Her CD is nothing compared to her first. Dont get me wrong, she has a fews songs on there that you can get down too. DejaVu, Get me bodied, Upgrade U, Irreplaceable, and Listen are the only songs on her CD that I can listen too with out turning. All the others I think the beats sound the exact same. You can tell who produced what. She said that this is her best CD. I think the total opposite. Dangerously in Love was her best. She showed everyone that she not only can sing R&B, but different genres as well (Rock, Pop) and they still all sounded good. You can ride to the whole CD. B'Day she only stuck with with one genre, and not only that the songs did sound the same. There are not enough songs on the CD, and not enought slow songs. I think she rushed it being that it only took her 2 weeks to record. I am a true Beyonce fan, but I think she should have took more time, and she could've done a whole lot better.

3-0 out of 5 stars What Happened to Beyonce'?
Jay-Z has ruined her. Anybody seen that video where he has her dancing around like some crazed African princess? It looks ridiculous and is way frenetic. I got dizzy watching it. Plus the cover photo of this CD looks like some third rate product from the 1960's. Beyonce, dump Jay-Z and get back to your roots. I like her old stuff much better than this but three stars because hey, it IS Beyonce'.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs an "Upgrade"
This album was a real let down from Dangerously in Love. You'd expect a more mature, grown sound, still without alienating her younger fan base. Yet instead we got remedial Destiny's Child lyrics circa "Bills, Bills, Bills" & "Bugaboo". Sure, you can dance to most of the tracks; great club beats. But for all that she is hyped up to be (the next Diana Ross), she needs an "Upgrade" HERSELF. ... Read more

Some are criticizing Lionel Richie for working with modern day producers and artists on this release as if he is grabbing at straws trying to find a new sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Studded with Standout Tracks
John Legend proves that he is indeed capable of living up to the tall prophesy of his name (adopted or otherwise) on this great new album featuring a smorgasbord of songs that recall everyone from Otis Redding to Lauren Hill to Jeff Buckley. Some of the songs may be a tad too long, and "Coming Home" feels middle-of-the-road, but these are minor quibbles for an album studded with standout tracks.Destined for multiple Grammys. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmoirized!! This boy has soul!!
I don't know what I was expecting with this cd, but I didn't expect to be floored. Robin has definately filled a musical void in today's R&B, and music period. He is a true artist and musician.I can hear his influences, but he still maintains his own individuality. This cd is holding my cd player captive right now, and will be on heavy rotation for long time.i'm hoping that they don't try to market him to be a immitation ofJustin Timberlake, though.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Eminem of R&B and Soul?
I could easily see Robin Thicke receiving that title with this masterpiece here. The album is fantastic, and a showcase of what's missing in R&B today. While many are likely to compare him Justin Timberlake, the fact of the matter is that the two artists are in two different classes. Comparing Thicke to Timberlake is similar to comparing Usher to Marvin Gaye, or any of the greats from back in the day. Speaking of those greats, Thicke emulates quite a few of them while still maintaining a bit of his own sound. Keep in mind that he is a singer/songwriter and has produced hits for many artists, including the young JoJo, who's latest I also recommend. There are only really two tracks that I always skip on the CD, namely All Night Long and Everything I Can't Have. The latter seems a bit out of place on the album with heavy latin jazz influence. It's... just weird. Sometimes I will listen to it, but I rarely get through the entire thing. As for the former, I pretty much detest Lil' Wayne, although I can't explain why I like Shooter. Cocaine is also one of my lesser favorites, possibly because it's a bit on the funky side, and I have to be in a certain mood for funk. Lost Without U is my main favorite, with 2 The Sky, a bit of a gospel song, coming in as a second. I'm kind of glad that Pharrell Williams didn't have too much involvement with the album as it probably would have changed the album completely. An excellent album. Defintely worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT COMPARE THICKE TO JUSTIN
This album is Hot to Death.Thicke is crazy talented and Justin just had good dacnes moves.Thicke is crazy talented and lyrically, Justin can't shine his shoes.Check this out if you miss really good music and diverse production."Ask MySelf" is HOT TO DEATH..My favorite track!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Cocaine"- That guitar and base makes it hard to stay drug free! JUST KIDDING!( seriously drug addictions ruin lives, If you are reading this and are struggling please call 1 800 784 6776 ) but I like this track a lot.THE BASS IS N-A-S-T-Y!!!!!!!!The faith track is ridic."Lost without you" is Whoa! If you like thicke show some love to Jamie Lidell ( out of the UK), Ernesto ( hailing from Sweden) a band called Liquid Loop (outta Germany)and go ahead and pick up JT's new one:) WBs are doing big thangs.:) DO NOT SLEEP!There is some good musica out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Leave the Trench & Shades at Home
I am a 28-year-old mother of three and I'll have to admit, I just about went to the store in a trench coat and dark shades to buy this CD! I was thinking this was just too "teeny-bopper" for me. Yet, the Making the Band 3 series had me real curious to see what the final product would be. And to my surprise, this album was not a let down at all! I loved the first rack and it had me going all the way to the end! There are a few snoozers on the album, but for the most part, worth the buy (without the disguise).

2-0 out of 5 stars Lukewarm
I was a fan of the show and really liked all the girls that made the group. I think they are all very talented, beautiful, and are ready to work hard to make it in this business. With that said, I was rather disappointed with the CD.. Some of the tracks don't sound very "clean", they sound like drafts still rather than being polished. There are a couple of good tracks on there but I'm surprised that with the kind of talent that went into creating this record that it doesn't sound better. I don't think that's the girls' fault though but rather production.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent debut!! Definately worth the wait!
I first heard Danity Kane's songs on the show Making the Band 3. I watched the show religiously for the two seasons that these extremely talented girls have been there. I really liked the samples of the songs I heard so when I bought the album I was absolutely not disappointed. I love that it is so upbeat and fun(although there are a couple of slower songs). I constantly find myself dancing and rocking my head with the beat of these tracks(People in the cars next to me on the highway must think i'm insane)! I can honestly say that I really like every single song on this album A LOT! Diddy has really found magic in these 5 women. Their voices are absolutely beautiful and the mixture of them is entrancing! I can't wait to see what they create next! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Monica is trying too hard.
It always surprises me when I read tons of positive comments on an album that's average/bad.Monica is great...her voice can be emotional and moving, but she doesn't take advantage of it on this album. While being ghetto can be fun (After the Storm had some "ghetto" moments--but they were good), she seems almost desperate to be viewed as thuggish on this album.Monica tries too hard to stay current--mentioning stuff like "rims" and "white T" seems forced coming from her.
5-0 out of 5 stars Makes of Me
I've been a Monica fan every since "Don't take it personal" back in 95. Like her I was 15 at the time too and I found it very easy to relate to what she was singing about. Now at 26 I can still relate to her. I think every woman that has ever been cheated on as asked themselves "Why Her" and has sung "Sideline Ho". This sounds to be a very personal album
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs in 2006!!
Please don't sleep on this CD. I have loved Monica since day 1. I have bought all her albums. But this is definitely her best thus far. I can listen to this album from beginning to end.I rarely find a CD that I don't have to skip through a song or two. Her beats, the lyrics, and her soulful voice makes this one of my favorite CDs of all time. I think I will buy 1 for my house and 1 for work. 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Some reviewers definitely did not have an open mind listening to this. How great to hear a familiar voice in a different sound element....just a guitar, a song associated with another great voice (what a challenge). Not a loser in the bunch...and you gotta love "the more you do its" nod to yesterday. She's not leavin' she's here to stay...FROM NOW ON!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sassy! Dazzling! Exciting! Daringly Brilliant!
Natalie Cole returns with her most adventurous exploration of personally admired compositions from Pop-Rock-R&B-Country Music's most prolific singer-songwriters she's had the pleasure to share the radio-chart spotlight with, throughout her brilliant career. Like her current Verve[and previously Capitol & Elektra]Records labelmate and radio-chart run comadre, Linda Ronstadt, Miss Cole is one of our very few and extraordinarily gifted artists who is daring and adventurous enough to risk everything careerwise by immersing her talent, and expanding her range, into an intense exploration of music from various genres and eras, other than her 'mainstream base' where her fans always expect her to not drift too far from. Milestone, after milestone album from Natalie Cole continues to rise and glow from the expansive musical ground she never denies she is inspired from - be it Rock, R&B, Jazz, Pop, Country - she possesses a rare vocal talent she easily transforms into an irressistably dazzling instrument of range and note. The 'main attraction' here is Miss Cole's marvelous vocal instrument! Miss Cole, visually, is more beautiful than ever - which makes for a very attractive album cover. I've always felt Shelby Lynne was robbed by unintelligent and tasteless radio station programmers of a monsterous radio/chart hit of her original, "Leavin'" - but Natalie revives this brilliance with a personally stamped cover version, adding a whole new "WOWzer" twist of her own! Natalie's "Leavin" comes from another remarkably different dimension - it's a vocalized mini-movie drama demanding notice of its own! Another smoldering track is "The Man With The Child In His Eyes", Natalie's most assured Power-Pop ballad to date. "The More You Do It" - which she teasingly introduces as for the "Old School"[referring to Music, of course]ends with that delicious catchy phrasing chorus of "From Now On!...From Now On!...From Now On!" reminds us that this is the NATALIE of "THIS WILL BE" Fame you're listening to and enjoying in all her everlasting glory all at once and forever more! It's also her affectionate and joyful tribute to the [first] songwriting team of Marvin Yancy-Chuck Jackson, she was blessed to have worked with at the outset of her career. Bright'n sassy horn sections accompany Natalie's sassiest and dazzling vocals in all the right and perfect places on various tracks throughout this well balanced album. We must thank Verve Records for allowing exceptional artists the freedom and opportunity to record their own music, fulfill their musical vision to full content, and offer us such outstanding collages of musical expression they feel moved to display and share - especially when the record company giants have become shamelessly indifferent to both these artists and the fans who built their financial institutions. I personally experienced the excitement of "living"[as we all do at times] some of these classic songs such as "Don't Say Goodnight" - "Old Man" - "Day Dreaming" - "Lovin' Arms"[much covered, but in the most endearing and heartfelt version for the first time ever, right here] - during their popular first time around in my teen years, but, COLE's sensitive, affectionate, and inspiring versions mystify and contribute a profound new dimension to the wonder and impact of each song's respective and timeless impact. NATALIE COLE remains an illustrious vocalist, and, with the astounding imagery and colors her voice displays, she easily demonstrates that no matter what genre of music she is inspired to explore, they are all inseparable.

Given the sped-up classic soul samples with which Kanye West has made his mark, it comes as no surprise that the producer/rapper would pick a tradition-minded R&B singer as his first big pet project. Legend first made his name on Philly's incense-clouded, '70s-obsessed neo-soul scene, then found his way to New York and became West's right-hand man in the studio. His patron's pop smarts serve Legend well--while many contemporary R&B records rely too heavily on a singer's cadence and skill to carry underdeveloped tunes, Legend and West have composed genuine songs like the perky "Number One," which has a lovestruck West jabbering that he no longer believes that "my heart don't got nothing to do with my penis." (It's way more convincing than Snoop Dogg's pledge of love on the next track, "I Can Change.") And even when the melodies are slight, West slides some nasty bass lines underneath, hinting at just enough of a hip-hop sensibility to keep the album from drifting into retro nostalgia. Yet Legend is no mere producer's plaything. His voice isn't immediately distinctive; he's neither as careworn as Anthony Hamilton nor as creamy as D'Angelo. But his gift for restraint sets him apart: the sex-as-drug metaphor of the title track is hardly fresh, but Legend delivers it smoothly enough to make it work, without pressing the issue. All bedroom come-ons have been used before. This late in the game, it's a matter of how well you use 'em. --Read more

Kanye found a gem in this guy.Production is amazing, John is amazing, go get this cd now.John's whole style is great....and a breath of fresh air into the R&B genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've listened to this CD more than any other.
John Legend's "Get Lifted" is the one CD I would listen to above all others (sorry, Madonna... it's a close call). And the new single, "Save Room," I just fell head over heels for. Something in my chest tightens when I listen to it. His voice is even smoother and sexier. I love the mellowness of his sound and a beat throughout it. Unlike what you see a lot in R&B, he wouldn't "whine", he doesn't get carried away singing. His voice is very well controlled, he sings like a professional, not just to show off that he can.
4-0 out of 5 stars Impatiently Waiting for Round II
I avoided this album for the longest time due to my dislike of "Ordinary People," however after hearing "Let's Get Lifted" one day I broke down and bought the album. What a great purchase! The creativity and musicianship on this album are stellar.Legend has created an album that crosses over the normal boundaries of Soul R&B, reminding me a lot of Hill's MISEDUCATION in terms of originality, quality, and overall mood.Certainly an album worth buying and I look forward to his upcoming sophomore release. ... Log onto an India.Arie lyrics page and you won't come away expecting an easy-breezy listen--here's an artist, remember, who made a name for herself by declaring her disdain for silicone and Cristal on her 2001 debut. What's consistently a revelation for new recruits to the Arie camp, then, is how good the music makes you feel. No matter how heavy the subject matter (and it still gets heavy--God surfaces in the first verse of "Intro," the prayerful opening song), she delivers it in such a way that it ends up feeling like homespun wisdom--accessible, cloudless, and heartening. 5-0 out of 5 stars India.Arie!!!! A truely inspirational CD
This CD is truely a work of art.It has an amazing expression of feeling and is a true inspiration.Thank you to India.Arie for touching my heart and many others.I can't even begin to describe this CD but to tell you that it is a must have. Please, if you do not already own this CD, go and buy it ~ it will be a rewarding purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars I absolutely love this album; I just can't stop listening to it!
Let me start by saying that I've never been into India.Arie's music before.Perhaps I should say that I never gave it a chance.Let me tell you, I bought Testimony:Vol 1, Life & Relationship in July and didn't play it until some time in August. Why?I've asked myself that so much because when I did pop the CD in the player, I fell in love with it right from the start! It's not easy to find an album that you can really say is great from start to finish.I'm going to be real; India.Arie deserves Grammy awards for this CD.It's that good!I've played "Better People" so much 'til my 6 year old knows the words just as well as I do."I Am Not My Hair" and "The Heart Of The Matter" are also great songs. Every tune on the album makes you want to sing along but I play the aforementioned three songs the most. How can this woman be this good; she is awesome! Her album makes me wonder why I didn't give her music a chance earlier?!I really love her album!I'm trying to get to one of her concerts because I'd love to see her sing live.I recommend Testimony:Vol. 1, Life & Relationship because it's brilliantly done!Had I given this awesome album a chance a month or two earlier, I would have been able to attend her concert while she was still near my area.I would have been in for a real treat!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE SINGULAR MARY J. BLIGE
This CD rocks;it is strong from start to finish.I especially like the track, "Be Without You", the club version of this song is one of the best i have ever heard, I go to the clubs specifically to dance to it..if you can't move your body to that song you'd better check your pulse. This is Ms. Blige's best work to date, she just get's better with every new release. If you get into music with soul and passion, with more than a touch of groove, then you will not be disappointed in this CD.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars This really is fantastic...
"The Breakthrough" really is one of the best albums of 2006 (I know it was released in 2005, but it was at the end of the year, has continued to be a big airwave-influence this year, and will be eligible for this year's Grammy Awards.)There is not one dud song on here.I personally like almost every song. The only one's I do not like are "Good Woman Down," "Baggage," "Ain't Really Love," and "Father in You." It is not that they are bad songs, I just can't personally relate to them right now or I am just not feeling those. All the other songs are outstanding for me, and I like this because even though I think Mary is probably speaking to people in these songs, as a Christian I am really able to speak many of them to Jesus and he speaks to me through them.Songs like "No One Will Do," "Be Without You," "Gonna Breakthrough" and "Can't Get Enough" can take on spiritual themes. And songs like "Take Me As I Am" and "Can't Hide From Love" are becoming faves of mine too. After the somewhat disappointing "Love and Life" (though I still liked it, I think all of Diddy's monotonous production weighed it down some), it rocks to see MJB coming back roaring like this. Also, there is a hidden bonus track after "One" that is a good dance song with a good message, even if the track does rip-off No Doubt's "Hella Good" somewhat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Flawless!!!!
Let me tell you that this is Mary's best in a while. Of course nothing tops "My Life". Every track has a purpose and everything flows well. This one is definitely a keeper. Her shows are absolutely amazing, and if anyone gets the opportunity should check her out. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Shut Up and Sing
First let me start my saying i'm a huge fan but man, this boy talks waaaaaaay too much. Soon as i get into a song, here he goes with, well, let me say this. Maybe it's the years locked up that makes him want to talk so much. I wonder if he realizes that people listen to the songs more than once. In my humble opinion, the first CD was better but this is a decent follow up. The boy has talent and be being a writer, i live by one rule, show dont tell. so shut up and sing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this CD
I am in love with this Cd I cant stop listening to it. This was a excellent cd. I can listen to all of the songs. The interludes are ok which at first I thought was stupid but it ran smoothly into the music. Everyone get this cd I guarentee that u will love this cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Innovative...And So Uncutter Cookie R&B
I've never ever listened to a Kelis album. So I can't call myself a fan...until now.Maybe it's because she's seriously underepresented in a teaming world of omnipresent payola pop-divas who are artistically weak, show midriff and create designer empires in the name of "synergistic capitalism".I'm against no one "getting paid", but what ever happened to "inspiration' as opposed to "mind rot".But I digress...
4-0 out of 5 stars Much better
I was hesitant to get this album, but I ended up with it for free (legally) so I can't complain.Given everything I've experienced with Kelis, from "Caught Out There" to "Young, Fresh, & New", to the disappointment that was Tasty, I was really expecting a steaming pile of excrement.Keep in mind that "Bossy" is probably one of the worst songs I've heard in a long time. But that's OK, because free stuff is always better than stuff you pay for, even if it sucks. So I gave it a good honest listen, and I was quite impressed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Jones proves that she can still do it even without The Neptunes
I was first introduced to Kelis when I heard the track "Caught Out There".Everyone in America was soon introduced to Kelis' famous statement, "I Hate You So Much Right Now!!!".Kelis' debut CD "Kaleidoscope" was different from any other CD that I had heard.Yes it was r&b music but Kelis' tracks didn't follow the same every day, radio play r&b track. My favorite track was her next single, "Get Along With You" and this CD was in heavy rotation for awhile.Kelis was due to release a 2nd CD for the longest time, "Wanderland" but for some reason the CD was only released overseas, which had many Kelis fans in a fit.One of the tracks "Popular Thug", which originally featured Pusha T of the Clipse was recycled for The Neptunes Presents "The Clones" CD, but featured Nas on the track instead. Kelis' next release in the states didn't occur until 2003's "Tasty". Although some people grew tired of her first single, "Milkshake" because the radio played the track all day, every day, Kelis proved that "Tasty" was far from a one hit wonder. Tracks like "Keep It Down", "Protect My Heart", "In Public" w/Nas, the crazy "Millionaire" w/Andre 3000 and the Raphael Saadiq produced, "Glow", proved that "Tasty" was an all around nice CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!!
Mario Vazquez delivered a great album of versatility and honesty. This is the real Mario the whole world was waiting for. Smooth vocals blending with great songwriting and quality production. Good for you Mario!! I'm looking forward to your next CD...!!!
2-0 out of 5 stars Highly disappointing
I was very disappointed by this CD. I was expecting much more after buying and listening to the Cesar CD. I can't complain about Mario's singing, but the song selection and style was no where near as good as the Cesar CD. I was expecting the beautiful latin style and rhythms. This was cheap hip hop sounding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly GREAT debut!
Did not expect this CD to be as good as it is when I purchased it. Mario Vazquez is the 29 y/o who made it to the finals of American Idol in season 4 and then decided to quit for "personal reasons". Everyone was shocked because he was alread quipped as being a fan favorite. 2 years later he comes out with a very solid debut, self titled CD.

Reality show star, amateur porn hobbyist and regular party fixture; hotel heiress Paris Hilton has decided she would also like to try her hand at being a pop singer. Just because you suspect she hasn't had any formal musical training, never paid dues by belting her heart out with the Mickey Mouse Club, or that she quite possibly bought her way into this whole racket on an expensive whim shouldn't stop you from spending a few frothy minutes with her opening shot, Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Disappoint . . .
This album is really hard to rate.It is an awful album and I would not recommend it to anyone, yet it is better than what I thought Paris could do and I did not get bored listening to it.The production is phenomenal (think Britney's last album "In the Zone") and Paris, while not a genius at writing songs, did co-write almost all of the songs.Virtually no one cares about these things though. The sole determinant of whether you like or dislike this album is whether you buy into the Paris Hilton Brand.
1-0 out of 5 stars Move to France, Paris
This woman can't sing or act and she's nasty. Why line her pockets for a bad product? I don't get it. She looks stupid, she's devoid of personality or talent, and a major skank. Yet the world hangs on her every monosyllabic utterance. Have we degenerated into a nation of low life idiots or what?

3-0 out of 5 stars Infectious but over-produced
Love her ot hate her Paris Hilton is a star in her own right- successful perfumes, a best-seller, a hit TV show and many inspid movies under her belt she has now decided to tackle the music industry. The album is full of infectious club/pop tracks like "Stars Are Blind", "Turn It Up" and "Nothing In This World" but the over-production rises speculation as to wheter Paris can sing or not (most probably not!). That aside, the album is a step in the right direction of what pop music should be like. ... Read more

Editorial Review

You may not have heard of the name Ne-Yo before, but you've more than likely heard some of his lyrics--specifically, on Mario's massive hit, "Let Me Love You." This talented musician wrote for a number of chart-toppers before the age of 22, penning songs for Mary J. Blige, B2K, and Faith Evans as well. After working for others, Ne-Yo--a.k.a. Shaffer Smith--decided to focus on his own career. Judging by the quality of songs on this debut, his creative well is not running dry anytime soon. The kick-off single, "So Sick" showcases the same tenderness evident in his Mario hit, as does much of this slow-jam heavy CD. Smith also shines on the Michael Jackson-esque "Sign Me Up," giving props to the icon in the chorus by singing "I just wanna rock with you" with beat-fueled bravado. Ne-Yo's songs come from a love of seventies and eighties soul; as a result, his music contains some unique samples, including an O'Jays lick (on the sexy "Get Down Like That," and a Switch snippet (on "It Just Ain’t Right"). Surprisingly, for such a hooked-up songwriter, he has limited the number of guest performers on the disc to just one--rapper Peedi Peedi performs on the disc opener, "Stay." The depth of the final track, "Time," clinches the hunch; Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars His Own Words Work Well
Something about Ne-yo's first single shouted this album is going to be hot. Hearing about other songs he's written for other artists made me crazy waiting for this release. When I first listened In My Own Words I was not disappointed because I thought every song was on point in every aspect especially the production. The limited guest appearances is what I love most about this and especially since it's his first, I can't stand when a new artist has a bunch of tracks with a bunch of other artists on it. His lyrics are different and he sings about things guys are always thinking but never sing about like the single When You're Mad. I think the only flaw in Ne-Yo's debut is that radio stations are playing his music way too much because it's really starting to make me hate this album. All in all this is a killer debut and with Ne-Yo's multitalented mind he's going be able to stick around for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am Ne-Yo biggest fan
I love Ne-YO so much I will do anything for him.I will forever love Ne-Yo even when he might stop singing.WHICH HE BETTER NEVER ever do that in this whole entire world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Made me fall in love withNe-yo.
I'm not lying. I didn't think that this CD would get me the way it did, but I am singing all the songs and constantly playing the CD in my car. All the songs are quite soulful; he is a breath of fresh air for the crap that we've been hearing trying to passed off as R&B. He is the epitomy of how R&B should be! I love it. All the songs, as the others said, are each great singles.

4-0 out of 5 stars India.Arie Presents Us With Soul-Food: 4-4½ Stars
The soulful India.Arie caught the attention of millions as she proclaimed: ''I'm not the average girl from your video/And I ain't built like a supermodel/But I've learned to love myself unconditionally/Because I'm a queen''. The lyrics, taken from the song Video, seemed to capture the mood of many women, as they, perhaps, couldn't relate to the so-called perfect ideal of a woman. Video catapulted India.Arie into the mind of listeners, as the song generated quite a buzz. Released in 2001, Acoustic Soul ensured India.Arie several Grammy nominations; however she had to see herself beaten by Alicia Keys.
5-0 out of 5 stars MUSICAL FABULOSITY............................!!!
The beloved India Arie is the muscial equivalent of the "girl next door."With her earthy, unassuming style and her smooth, melodic tones India reminds us all of a good friend. If she isn't singing about self-love via an upbeat tune that we can groove to (Video), than she is reminding us gently that we are beautiful and to rejoice in our Blackness (Brown Skin).A musical compilation that is worthy of a Grammy simply on the strength of the messages contained in the lyrics...the songstress herself is gravy.Loved it, loved it, and still do.

Beyoncé, look out: Le Toya's in the house. This debut disc by the former Destiny's Child member could make any firmly established diva crazy with envy. Slicing the set up between traditional R&B and hip-hop-lite, the once stuck-in-the-shadows belle of Houston trades on her silky vocals and a knack for musical playfulness; hear it not only on "Torn," the radio hit that propelled this project, but also on the tracks you'd expect least. "Hey Fella," with fellow Houstonian Slim Thugg, is a dirty-flirty come on that'll nudge listeners into winking at strangers, and "Tear Da Club Up" and "Gangsta Grillz" rip into the atmosphere, determined to get Texas booties--booties from anywhere at all, really--shaking. On those two tracks and elsewhere, Le Toya enlists her street smart homeboys--Bun B, Jazze Pha, and Mike Jones--to set the appropriate vibe. But overall, this disc feels like a free-spirited invitation to check out her many musical layers. Detractors may fault Le Toya for latching on to better-known bangers and satisfaction-guaranteed production (hello, Jermaine Dupri!), but a close listen and a look at the credits crushes doubts about her credibility. Destiny may have left Le Toya behind, but the fellas from back home scooped her up; her voice and their presence will vault her to the top. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars So Good So far
When I heard "Torn" on the radio, orginally I didnt know who the person was singing it. I didnt realize who it was until I was watching CD USA. I was so suprised when I found out it was her. I had been waiting on her CD to come out for so long til I just gave up. When I bought her CD I was satisfied. The wait was worth it. She had been through so much, when she finally decided to come out on her own and stamp her name on it, she had to make sure it was on point. And her CD, is.

The first solo album by the Fugees' most distinctive voice quickly wipes away the pretensions of so many current hip-hoppers' discs. It does so by both engaging their widescreen ethos--"To Zion," with its martial drums and gospel choir, is as epic a production as has been heard in 1998's pop music--and speaking the plain truth.
