The amazing aspect of this all-star tribute album isn't its stars--Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne, k.d. lang, and others show up for homage to their hero. It's the graceful way they fade into the background, deservedly giving Orbison's impossibly high pitch a full spotlight on his classics "Only the Lonely," "In Dreams," "Ooby Dooby," and "Crying." Costello's new "The Comedians," with its image of a ferris wheel-stranded lover, is perfect for Orbison, incidentally. The Best of the Best
I remember it well; I watched it in awe on cable and taped it.I still have the tape.I have the cassette version of this CD.When PBS trots it out during a fund raiser, I watch it again.It is very special to me.Nobody has to tell you about the vocal powers of Roy Orbison.The show was no doubt shot in black and white to conceal Roy's less-than-striking physical qualities. People magazine had a picture of him with a reference to his being an "antique rocker".But when the lights came up, Roy showed us all that he still had it.As other reviewers have noted, accomplished musicians with their own fan bases were on hand in backup roles to provide excellent support without displaying any ego of their own.They were there to support their hero.This is one of the best filmed concerts I have ever seen and highly recommend you get the DVD as well.In the filmed version, as the cameras pull back after the concert, Kris Kristofferson can be seen in the audience, playing to the camera and grinning his approval.This is one item you are bound to treasure.This is music history made more significant by Roy's sudden death just months later.

Everything I do, well, I sure do it good
This concert by Roy Orbison was recorded in September of 1987.The core musicians here were in Elvis Presley's band in the 1970s, interestingly.They are supplemented by several well known performers who were admirers of Roy.But guys like Bruce Springsteen don't try to steal the spotlight from Roy.They just let Roy do what he does best, which is sing with that amazing voice of his.Roy does sound a bit older than he did back in his heyday, but he can still hit those high notes.Roy and friends run through most of his classic hits, plus a new song written by Elvis Costello, "The Comedians", which later was included on his last album.It's truly a wonderful concert, and I would recommend it to any fan of Roy.

What a dvd this is. The legend that was Roy Orbison performing his greatest songs with a band of all stars. Bruce Springsteen spends the whole time staring in awe at Orbison and the singing from the three ladies (warnes, Raitt and Lang) is nothing short of heavenly.Read more

I listened to the album and found that some of the songs are acutally recorded.I was hoping all of the songs would be live. The selections thatwere live are good but I have heard these recordings before on otheralbums.I did enjoy all of the songs on the album and feel it is a goodmix of songs. Stunning live set upstages early recordings
Truly great live albums are as rare as hen's teeth when scrutinised closely, but this 1981 live recording from Billy Joel could very well be the greatest of them all.
Flawless
I'm not kidding. I think this is probably the best live CD I own. I had no idea what I was getting into when I bought this, and did so on somewhat of a whim. The entire CD is incredible, not a weak track on there. The sound quality is astounding, the shows were recorded so well you often forget you are listening to a live performance (and the remastering sounds good too). But really its Billy and the band that make the album what it is, and this disc contains versions of Billy's songs that have never sounded better. Yes, I would say all the songs on this CD are far superior to their original album versions (which were excellent to begin with), especially tracks like Ballad Of Billy The Kid and Miami 2017. Do yourself a favor and get this CD, its only 9.99 and you won't be disappointed. Oh and listen to it LOUD. On a good system. Then pick your jaw up off the floor.

Endless Summer...
I would recommend all fans of Donna Summer to purchase the DVD, great quality with some nice extra material included this is a very enjoyable, intimate concert. (sit back, relax and this is the next best thing to beingthere).

I shed tears the first time I saw her performance (at the VH1 Special) of "If There Is Music There".Her delivery of this song pretty much encapsulates the soul and life in her music---her voice has so much poweryet remains so exquisitely flexible and fluid.Such awesome grace andpower in her interpretation of "Someone to Watch Over Me". "My Life" is such a signature Donna Summer song, so danceable,lively, and engaging.The diva of divas has never failed her most loyalfans with her live performances.SHE HAS ALWAYS SOUNDED GREAT.There's nostopping or slowing down this wonderful and extraordinary talent!

3 1/2 Stars: His Best 70's Live Recording
This oft-ignored album, recorded in March 1974 at Memphis's Midsouth Coliseum (formerly the center of controversy when the proposed title, the Elvis Presley Coliseum, was poo-pooed), is easily his strongest live package of the '70s, the one worth having. Elvis is in exceptional vocal form and, between all the stuff that showed up on every other live album of the period, there is a great "Trying To Get To You" and strong versions of "My Baby Left Me" and "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy," material he otherwise left unnoticed. - by Neal Umphred, AMG

The real Celine Dion experience!!!!!
This CD showcases Celine Dion's vocal talent at it's best, and I often find that much of this gifted artist's work is better when recorded live rather than in the studios. I find that this CD along with her previous live release "Live Al Olympia" reveal Celine at her best, unlike other artists who's on-stage and live performances often prove to be more damaging to their credibility as singers. The album contains exceptional moments- my favorite, perhaps, is when Celine reveals a hidden talent...her astonishing ability to imitate the sounds of instruments as she introduces the members of her musical entourage. Also, the fresh quality and appeal of the often over-played 'Deaux' tracks, proves that when Celine performs her studio-recorded material live- she sings with such vitality and passion that it seems that we're hearing these songs for the first time. Adding the single "To Love You More" was indeed a 'bonus', but I find that it is out of place on this testament to Dion's abilities as a 'live' performer and I don't consider it to be one of the more shining moments on this album. However, the moments that do shine are what should perhaps be consideredCeline trademark tracks, classics such as "The Power of Love" and "Ziggy", which are, naturally, included. This is the album that made me realize that if I would be given only one opportunity to see an artist live, I would definitely choose Celine Dion, for she makes the concert experience a truly memorable and worthwhile one.

Another Amazing One Celine!
This is an awesome work from Celine Dion.All her cd's are great but this is one of the best.Please try the video of this concert, it's awesome. All Celine Dion fans please support her and buy her new cd; which will be out the 23th and 24th of October all over the globe.Celine Rocks!!!!!

to the marrow
Although filmed concerts from Roy Orbison's later career are plenty, those from his early days aren't. And happily this integral 1965-concert in Holland is one of them.
rebooted and remasted
I use to trade bootleg cassettes, and hearing this pair of 1965 European concert recordings of Roy Orbison shows was a deja vu' of the bootleggin' experience.Much of the fun in collecting bootleg recordings is in hearing the different spins artists would put on their best known songs from one tour to the next, or on alternate takes in the studio.Unfortunately many of these recordings are, of course, sub par, but it doesn't take long to start seeing the promise beyond the spit and polish of immaculate recordings.Somewhere along the way you start actually valuing the realism only reality can afford.What you never actually value however, is hearing the same faux pas over and over, so bootlegs are frequently a one-listen-only endeavor.

Live Performing Legend
You can learn a lot from Lara when it comes to live performances. She is absolutely stunning during her live concerts and the fans eat out of her hands. Like other reviewers stated, her fans adore her and she adore her fans. During every live show you can always hear a roaring crowd, they are never quiet during the show and the sing along enthusiastically. The only disappointing thing about this album is that there is no DVD edition of the show. Still it is pure enjoyment to listen to this album, you feel like you are part of the show even if you're not really there.

Thrilling
You know, this is it! This is the CD! Listen to the background noise, all those people cheering, screaming with all their might for Lara, for her songs. Understand how important she is to so many people's lives, how her songs touch each one of them in different, unique ways. What are some of the titles of songs on the CD?
Question: How do you write a review on a Musical CD that does not list the titles of some of the Music?I'd love to know what is on the CD. I would have to rate this CD only on the 2 people involved in the singing. Belafonte and Mouskouri are fantastic in their own right.

A No-brainer
The Ellington band live, at the end of the '30's - beginning of the '40's. The greatest band ever, in better sound than these tracks have ever been available in before. You KNOW you need it!!!! How can such a thing be critiqued? Pussy Willow, Old King Dooji, Gal From Joe's and Jazz Potpourri are all broader and more vivid than on the studio versions. The comparisons are fascinating - what happened outside of the 3 min. studio limit; what happened to a piece when it was played night after night.
