4-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE
This collection is fantastic. Elton John, Cher, Tina Turner, LeAnn Rimes, Faith Hill, Brandy & Mary J Blige were all great, but the reason that anybody buys this disc is because of Whitney Houston.3-0 out of 5 stars Divas..Take Two
When VH-1 did their popular Divas Live concert in 1998, it became a household name for all ages. Nevertheless, it had so many cheers at the live concert, but a few flaws with the record, by accounts of performances that were performed live on the concert, but not released on the album itself. For the sequel, there were more divas than the last time on the bill. They included such legends as Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, and Cher to name a few. Still, it became a powerhouse to watch. The concert also became a little more thrilling with other people coming in like Elton John, and Faith Hill entering the crowd. 4-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good list of hits
I enjoyed the show, and from what I understand it was for a good cause. This CD pretty much highlights the show. In ways I wish they would have included LeAnn & Elton's duet "Written In The Stars". There's2 incredible voices together. In my opinion though...Brandy doesn't reallyseem to fit in as a "Diva" if Faith Hill and LeAnn Rimes are onlythe Divas in training for the show. ... Read more

Time was when Rickie Lee Jones and Tom Waits were fellow travelers with a shared neo-boho, singer-songwriter style, the self-conscious musical equivalent of characters from an Edward Hopper tableau. But unlike Waits, who got in touch with his inner Beefheart and embraced a more avant-garde approach, Jones has largely stayed the cocktail crooner course, refining her melodic sensibility and continuing to inject generous doses of folk, jazz, R&B, and world music influences into her itinerant hipster shtick. (Strains of reggae, zydeco, and Dixieland, along with a vocal assist from Lyle Lovett, find their way into this album's version of "Love Is Gonna Bring Us Back Alive.") Compared to Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great performance, poor recording
This must have been a great show. The band is tight. It's wonderful to hear Rickie in a live ensemble setting. Her voice is strong and lovely. This would be a favorite CD of mine if not for the quality of the recording itself. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not like the live stuff from her Web site

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic
This recording should be the quintessential Dietrich concert album, but it seriously needs to be re-mastered.The original Columbia LP (from which the cover art derives) was in stereo, but this DRG release is the same mono version of the album that is available on dozens of other labels at much lower prices. Also, the song "Mona Lisa" was recorded at this evening, but never released.DRG or Sony should press an all out re-issue of this classic concert with photos, added material, and re-mastered sound, something in the vein of the Broadway Masterworks series.
4-0 out of 5 stars My first Marlene album!
I actually got this album 2 days ago. And I love it. I was shocked and delighted to find it in a local Tower Records. And it's also my first Marlene album. I fell in love just a few months ago... 2-0 out of 5 stars Campy!
I had listened to older CDs by her, and was hoping for a sultry, smoke-filled room feeling.I read previous reviews and thought this one sounded good, but it is grating to me, not at all what I expected. Too modern and noisy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Form on this FTD release
This is a 1974 soundboard release on the collewctor's label Follow that Dream. From the opening lines of See See Rider it is plain that Elvis is in both good humor and voice for this performance. He sings great versions of See See Rider, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, Blue Suede Shoes, Fever and many others. On a scale of 1 to ten I rate his performance an eight out of ten. It does not have the raw energy of his 68,69,70 performances or the dramatic flair of the February and June shows of 1977 but it is a great addition to a fan's collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful live album!
Lionel Richie's Encore live album is wonderful! Though it came out three years later in 2004 of his 2001 concert in England, this is a very energetic live release. He is still in fine form singing his biggest solo and Commodores hits such as All Night Long, Still, Three Times a Lady, Penny Lover, Stuck On You (even the crowd's singing to the words!), Dancing on The Ceiling and his most recent hit Angel. I still feel like I'm at the concert after hearing this CD!And to these longtime artists doing standards albums, they need to take some pointers from Lionel and tear up some stages to sing their biggest hits and newer songs! The fans don't play around--they know all the words, just as these fans did at Lionel's concert for this album! This is yet another superb performance from Lionel, who's still at the top of his game in music!

4-0 out of 5 stars Believe It Or Not, He's Still Got It
You'd think that after nearly 20 years past his heyday and a few voice operations that Lionel Richie may have lost his touch. But this live album proves just the opposite. Richie hasn't lost any of his magic.
2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
Maybe I was looking forward to this too much, but the arrangements are sub-par, lionel's voice sounds rough and he sings the songs different than the originals, really mixing the lyrics and pronunciation up a lot. It sounds more like he's talking rather than singing. I was very disappointed-not worth it as a live cd. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Hall and Oates's association with the early '80s is hard to shake, but this collection shows that the pair deserves a critical reevaluation. The duo's blue-eyed soul was marked by distinctive melodies and arrangements. Just listen to the collision between Motown and new wave on "You Make My Dreams" and the killer intro on "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)." Can't get that stuff out of your head? There's a reason these guys were the most successful duo in rock history. In addition to the certified hits, this release includes three new studio recordings (the group's first since 1997) and three live tracks, including 1974's "She's Gone" and a nine-minute version of "Every Time You Go Away," which was written by Hall but a 1985 hit for Paul Young. 5-0 out of 5 stars I CAN go for THIS (YES can do)!
No "best of" compilation can be all-inclusive.For the true fan, there will be a glaring omission of a favored album cut or the addition of a less popular one; everyone cannot be satisfied. For the novice listener, such a collection can serve as an introduction to some of an artist's best work.3-0 out of 5 stars Philly Soul Duo
We often don't seem to realize in the music industry about traditional Pop and Rock music. It is just a shame, because we often overlook musical acts that still have been declared guilty pleasures, or just because of what seems to be more popular in the music industry like Rap and Hip Hop. But, we often don't realize is that successful longevity that really makes artists last. That case comes out to be really simple within the case of Hall & Oates. Since their partnership began within the mid 60's they've made some of the biggest recordings ever in the music industry today.5-0 out of 5 stars Rock-Soul Love it, Yes Indeed I Do!
Hall & Oates are one of the most commerically successful duos ever. The breakout charts of some of the former hits proof that over their career the dynamic duo scored at least six singles and sixteen Top Ten hits in the 1980's. Very impressive. Darn, right! To know the truth of this strong track record and the whole story of Hall & Oates watch VH1 Behind The Music.Read more

In 1940, some young fans with a recorder captured one of Duke's best bands on a typical road engagement in North Dakota, and the two-and-a-half hour souvenir they took home is justly prized. Even allowing for some cropped intros or endings, and occasional off-mike vocals by Ivie Anderson and Herb Jeffries, this is great Ellington and one of the great live jazz records. Read more

What an incredible experience--to be on stage with Duke's finest ensemble for five unrushed, high-spirited hours.Never has the music of this period seemed more "alive."For the first time, I can understand why the Blanton-Webster edition of the band has received so much attention--and veneration--from the jazz historians and Ellington scholars.

Editorial Review

When Elvis Presley's late-1960s comeback is discussed, talk generally centers on two events--his 1968 NBC-TV special and the recordings made in Memphis at American Studios shortly thereafter. There was actually a third key event--Presley's first Las Vegas engagement in 13 years (he flopped the first time), which kicked off at the brand-new International Hotel on July 31, 1969. The event is downplayed now since Vegas has become so synonymous with the King's decline--but this was a revitalized Presley, and, for the most part, he rocked. The white jumpsuits and "My Way" would come later; for this show, Presley wore a black karate suit and was backed by one of the hottest rockabilly bands on earth, with the legendary James Burton on lead guitar. Presley does early hits, Sun stuff, a Willie Dixon blues tune, and his latest singles ("In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds"). The furthest he steps outside his oeuvre is a cover of the Bee Gees' "Words." If only he'd continued in this vein. As it is, this stands with Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars elvis in person at the international hotel las vegas 1969
This is elvis at his all time height,I myself saw elvis a number of times but always wished i saw the 69 vegas performences.Elvis never before or since sounded or performed better. The recordings from the same time period were also of Elvis" best.Unfortunatly, elvis would never perform or record anywhere near as good as he did in 1969,everyone was hopeing he would trash the glitz and schmultz and go back to the way he was here, but we all know the end of the story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Elvis Live!
I like the selections of songs. They are performed very well by Elvis well known live band (James Burton, Johnny Wilkinson and Charlie Hodge-guitar, Jerry Scheff-bass, Ronnie Tutt-drums and Larry Muhoberac-piano). This is his first live album. The songs are compiled from different concerts. Willie Dixon's My Babe, Medley: Mystery Train/Tiger Man and Bee Gees' Words are the songs that you can't find anywhere else.
5-0 out of 5 stars His Best
Yes .. these were his best performance(s), marred only by the engineers mix which is just awful. Hopefully, one day we will get more tracks from 1969, properly mixed which would make this an all time best. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The new version of the Limeliters in Concert circa 1982
The Limeliters were one of the more successful folk groups of the early 1960s, especially in terms of representing the movement's backlash against rock 'n' roll.In the beginning the group, which took its name from the Limelite club in Aspen, Colorado, consisted of Glenn Yarbrough on guitar, Lou Gottlieb on bass, and Alex Hassilev on guitar and banjo.Gottlieb had been a member of the Gateway Singers and heard Yarbrough and Hassilev singing one night at Hollywood's Cosmo Alley nightclub. In 1959 a successful gig at San Francisco's hungry i got them a record contract and the rest was history.5-0 out of 5 stars Much fun music for the money...
I didn't follow the Limeliters after lead singer Glenn Yarbrough left his mates Lou Gottlieb and Alex Hassilev to go solo, and even during their heyday, they were my third favorite act of the late '50's folk revival, behind the Kingston Trio and the Chad Mitchell Trio. But the Limeliters survived, and in the past ten years I have become a big fan of Red Grammer, who replaced Yarbrough and performed with the other original members during the 1980's. Red, a great tenor, specializes in kids' songs as a soloist, with a couple of adult singer/songwriter efforts in recent years which are also worth owning. This Limeliters' concert was recorded in 1985, and offers more than 70 minutes of fun but smart folk music. About half the tunes bring the original folk era to mind: John Henry, Maleguena, an Irish medley stolen from the Clancy Brothers, Woody Guthrie's Hard Travelin' and Ed McCurdy's Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream. The rest reflect the late '70's and early '80's, as in Harry Chapin's Circles (All My Life's a Circle). Lou and Alex provide the laughs and the rhythm section, and Red carries off the major vocal assignments. If you were a fan of the original trio but haven't heard much of Red's work, don't be afraid to invest in this disc, because it's plenty good. If you like Red Grammer in his solo efforts, buy this and find out he was as good 20 years ago as he is now. For me, this is worth the dough just for Red's own composition and performance on "Harmony" and his lead singing on "Shine On Me."

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as I remember!
Although I had heard the Limeliters on LPs (particularly "Through Children's Eyes") for several years, it was this manifestation of the group-- Lou Gottlieb, Alex Hassilev, and Red Grammer-- that I first saw in concert, and it was almost exactly the same show as presented on this album. I fell in love with "Harmony", and the electricity of the Limeliters live was quite powerful. Read more

This recently issued 1971 live performance by the Four Freshmen is a real find. It's a good fit with two other live CDs -- "Road Show" with JuneChristy and Stan Kenton and the "Live at Butler University" concert -- that have been around for several years.Ross Barbour, Bob Flanigan, Ken Albers and Bill Comstock are the Freshmen for this 19-tune CD.It's a mix of old stand-bys like "In This Whole Wide World," "Angel Eyes," "Route 66," "Poinciana," "It's a Blue World," "We'll Be Together Again" and "Graduation Day" with some lesser-sung (by this group) songs like "Misty Roses," "Bird Avenue" and "Come Back to Me."I suspect this one won't be available long, so order it now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Swing With The Best
This has been my favorite Ella Fitzgerald set since I first acquired the vinyl in 1975 or so.The editorial review leads you to believe that these tracks are derived from the eight- disc boxed set, but that's not accurate - THIS is the original album, and all that was available of these wonderful concerts for many years.I was excited when they announced the release of the eight disc boxed set, knowing how much I love the music on the original two disc set, but in retrospect, the big box set doesn't really contain much more worthwhile material. If I had to do it over I would just buy the two-disc set and skip buying the box, as I find myself playing this one over and over and hardly ever cracking open the other.
5-0 out of 5 stars the cd of duke ansd elle at the cote d'azur 1966
this cd is great ! i love this version of mack the knife, for me that's th best one. Lullaby of birdland is the song that moves me the most and if thers is a video tape of this concert please let me know !

3-0 out of 5 stars Ella's great, Duke's just okay
I, a Duke Ellington Fan, was not so impressed with his band's work here, although some of the tracks are good.""The Old Circus Train Turnaround Blues" swings along nicely, "Dimenuendo in Blue"is great, and Cat Anderson's Latinesque squealing on "El Viti/TheMatador" is first-rate fantastic, a very engaging tune.Ellafitzgerald, despite having suffered the loss of her sister just before therecordings, is in great voice. She does a splendid job with "JazzSamba," singing in Portugese and English, then lapsing into a greatscat chorus. When she begins scatting, it's so very musical that withoutmuch work, you can very easily imagine a saxophone playing the notes. Ialso enjoyed this version of "Lullaby of Birdland," a song I lovedone in a different arrangement than Ella normally used. Love the scat atthe beginning and end! She sings "Misty" beautifully as well, butit is "Mack the Knife" that is the reall winner here.Hard-driving and brassy, Ella wails along with the band, and all seem to behaving a fun time. The same is true for "It Don't Mean a Thing,"one I really like. The Ellington Orchestra really pulls its weight here, making up for laggin other times. Here is one of the best examples of Ellabecoming another instrument in the band through her great cohesiveness withher musicians. Duke sits in on piano, and Ray Nance duets with Ella at onepoint. This CD is worth buying if only for these tracks! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Luminous Orbit of Roy
How preposterous, billing the 'O' as support for the Rolling Stones. There he was at The Palaise, Melbourne ca 1964, an impressively immobile, lone figure seemingly summoning the celestial gods before Jagger and co. raised the planks from the underworld. His absolute stasis served to drill attention to the essence of his act. No amount of rhythmic grind and thrust could dissipate Roy's presence. His notes still riffed around the rafters. Certainly he made his debut, which he plays for us in this concert, as an aspirant rocker. 'Pretty Woman' not withstanding, Orbison rocking out? It never really fits. Not, at least along side the signature operatic pop ballads, where, to put it coyly, he found his voice and metre. Like many artists with auspicious early 60s careers, Orbisons' seemed to stand as still through the 70s as his demeanour at the microphone. This Austin City concert marked his re-emmergence after a lengthy reclusion. It is exactly what fans desired - a total recapitualtion of stellar moments, superbly arranged and timed, the voice in full throttle. 'Leah' and,'Working for the Man' are often missed on collected hits. I've loved these as much as the paranoid driven majesty of,'It's Over', 'Cryin', 'and 'Running Scared', the last two which are graced with reprise treatment. While,'In Dreams' acknowledges the source of his imagery he never evoked it as poignantly as on,'Leah' where we plunge the depths with the helpless diver for pearls. (Flo and Eddie/Turtles lightly invoked the song with, 'Nikki Nikki Hoy' on their self-titled disc). Needless to say, Roy presented us with the pearls despite the perils of his searching. This concert must have been a sublime occasion. There was probably no inkling of the second-wind cameo with The Wilberrys, of the incandescent,'Black and White Night' or the curtain call,'Mystery Girl' in the remainder of the decade. So this may be considered as a re-affirmation of a unique gift and confirmation for the artist that high-octane fuel was on tap. May he orbit amongst the most luminous constellations long after this record orbits in my player. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Dreamer In Us All
This CD is unlike any other concert you've ever heard. The superlatives for this album would fill volumns.Rod was at Carnegie Hall for his birthday celebration in 1970 and his intimancy with the crowd is obvious early on. The love seems to flow in each direction, from audience to performer and back. The songs and poems are warm, wistful, happy, sad and run the full spectrum of human emotions. Unfortunately, the CD has been edited by taking out some twenty minutes of the concert, but what remains is priceless. If you can listen to Rod's reading of "A Cat Named Sloopy" and not have a tear in your eye I'd be surprised. The same with "To Watch the Trains," "I'll Catch the Sun," and "I've Been to Town."Sit back, relax, close your eyes, and just let the songs of life, love, love lost, loneliness and childhood just wash over you. I promise you an unforgettable experience.Joe M. HayesDel Mar, CA

4-0 out of 5 stars The end of a long search...
My mother took me to see Rod McKuen at Carnegie Hall the night this album was recorded. I was young, but the music and lyrics moved me. Years later, my mother, bought this album and we relived that night over and over until the album was worn out. Now, many years later, I can once again relive that night and, more importantly, those special moments with my late mother. Thank you so much Amazon for making this available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad to know his wonderful music is still available.
What a marvelous talent. One of the worlds best poets as well as a great songwriter and singer. Thanks for putting this wonderful talent on your availability list. I have been looking everywhere for some of his albums. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars 100% Bootleg
The 1-star reviewers are correct -- this is an audience recording and sounds nothing like a professional live release. The vocal is so muddy that the lyrics are often hard to hear clearly and the instruments, while all present, don't have any coherent mix.
1-0 out of 5 stars No, don't listen to ...
The first reviewer is absolutely correct. The sound on this recording is abysmal. If it is not a bootleg that managed to sneak through the cracks and gain "official" release through retailers such as ..., I'd be quite surprised. If it is, in fact, a legitimate official recording from a legitimate label, then it is, simply put, garbage--and way, way below acceptable standards.1-0 out of 5 stars NOT from soundboard, don't waste your $!!
...I love Roy Orbison and I was looking to add a few titles to my collection to hear what he was like live. As soon as I popped this CD in, I knew something was wrong. This CD is NOT mastered from a source like the mixing desk/soundboard. It sounds like a semi-decent audience recording. Treble is WAY too high, the keyboards on this are really over the top, you can't hear the bass really and you can hear the audience over the musicians. I've collected live shows of many artists over the years, so believe me when I say this is an audience recording. And, it's not even a good audience recording. Some of the sound even "rolls" like it was recorded on an old audio cassette and deteriorated over time.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars There is something for everyone on this CD!
Stop with the Dame Edna insults! She performed with the blessing of Mr. Sondheim - helped sell tickets for an excellent charity - and thrilled both the audience and cast. The cast members filled the wings to hear the Great Dame! The audience was in stitches. The London Philharmonic was in top form. And while one reviewer may not like Michael Ball - he has legions of fans that do love him. Julia Mackenzie's Barcelona is awesome! Admittedly I am biased about this CD - but rest assured, there is something for everyone on this recording. And the sales of the CD benefit the Alan J. Lerner Cancer Charity!

3-0 out of 5 stars Hardly ideal, but nice instrumentals
It seems to be a long held maxim that, although the Brits adore Sondheim, they often have little idea how to perform his work. This concert recording of Sondheim's work (I expect that there will one day be more concertrecordings of Sondheim's work then cast recordings), with one or twoexceptions, seems to bear this out.2-0 out of 5 stars Sondheim is my fav....but sheesh!
There have been SOOOO many excellent concerts of Sondheim's work....and this ISN'T one of them. Many people hate Dame Edna's LADIES WHO LUNCH, well they are unaware that it is a joke!Maria Friedman disgraces all ofSondheim's beautiful work, as do many of her co-stars.Please consideranother compliation of Sondheim's work. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Vegas Elvis
This is his second live album. The songs are just like on In Person compiled from different concerts. I don't know why should we listen to Release Me or Del Shannon's Runaway or The Beatles' Yesterday when the originals are so much better. C.C. Rider is here issued for the first time. The songs are performed very welland Elvis is singin' great.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Performance, Some Quirky Material Selections
This album was recorded live in February, 1970 at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. This version of the CD is the originally released version, and you should consider buying the newer CD with added tracks which wouldn't fit on an LP (hence the original configuration.) Most of the songs are performed with energy, but some of the songs Elvis chose to perform left me scratching my head, especially "Yesterday," the loathsome "Sweet Caroline," and "Proud Mary" all hits for others that would have better been left alone by Elvis. The highlight of the CD is without question "Release Me." I think this is the strongest performance of this song that I have ever heard. Also strong are "C.C. Rider" and the amusing food-inspired "Polk Salad Annie," a song which is simultaneously funny yet cantankerous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medusa Live in Central Park
In a word...tremendous! A must have is you're a Annie Lennox fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medusa/Live in Central Park...better than original Medusa CD
I like Medusa/Live in Central Park because of Annie's choice of tracks and updated styles. All tracks are so different to the originals except for A Whiter Shade of Pale. This track is almost kept in its pristine manner. Whether the Harpsichord is real, or synthesized through a keyboard, it is a touching choice of instrument voice for the song. Speaking of instruments, Annie's vocal workouts on the inspirational Train in Vain are no less than amazing. Never before have I heard such a moving tune done by her. 4-0 out of 5 stars Slumming, maybe, but still chilling...
Annie Lennox may sing about a 'chill placed in her heart', but she's one of the few female vocalists still alive who can actually move me to tears, without exxageration.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Correction - it's a studio recording, not live, but great stuff
A lot of reviewers panned this recording, but you must take it in perspective. In 1965, Ellington was penning a lot of long concept pieces.By comparison, this is a collection of top-notch big band music. The reviewers were disappointed that it did not fit with the repertoire he was otherwise producing at the time.
