Hy Zaret would have loved it.
Hy Zaret, who wrote the words to "Unchained Melody" never like Bobby Hatfield's (Righteous Brothers) version of it because he "jazzed it up".So, I think he would have loved the way Barry Manilow sang it on this cd.By the way, for those of you, like me, who always wondered where "Unchained Melody" got its name, it was featured in the obscure 1955 prison movie, "Unchained".It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song but lost out to another song on this cd, "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing".History aside, I like the way Barry Manilow presents these timeless classics.He sings them with the feeling and respect they deserve.It's much more than easy listening.It's a time capsule back to the '50's!

Barry ManiLOW...real low.........
How did this guy ever get a recording contract? Not only is his singing style shmaltzy, but his voice is grating, whiney, and nasally. Besides being a self-admitted atheist and homosexual, he is a terrible singer. Very handsome, though. He looks like a cross between a giant mosquito and a Kangaroo who got into somebody's eye shadow and makeup kits. What an overrated wierdo. This guy had to have friends inside the industry. Manilow singing Tony Bennett or Bobby Darin is akin to Cedric the Entertainer playing Cary Grant or Clark Gable. In drag, no less.

I LOVE every song I've heard Barry perform and have never been disappointed. This album is no exception. He does an outstanding job with some great songs that bring back many memories of the '50s. There are 13 tracks of romantic "(mainly) slow" songs--great mood-music for having dinner, or dancing, with someone special.

Great Soundtrack
Most movie soundtracks are full of songs that aren't that good. Grease on the other hand is full of songs by a steller cast. Each one is a glimpse either into the era that is the birth of rock and roll or into the viscuous life of the American teenager.

Gold assembled a handful of knowns and unknowns to make special cameos on this melodic and fun collection of original and classic Halloween tunes with a pop-rock bent. Among the haunted are David Cassidy, Karla Bonoff, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Bishop, Nicolette Larson, and Gold's children and wife. From the Beatlesesque touches of "It Must Be Halloween" (parts seemingly lifted from "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite") to Boris Karloff's "Monster Mash" and "The Addams Family" theme song, Gold and company offer up treats that kids and their parents will like, including the "Ghostbusters" theme. GREAT FOR VINTAGE HALLOWEEN PARTY!
I have just about EVERY Halloween Music CD out there and I'm not exagerating folks and this one is my favorite for a fun, entertaining party.Although the target audience may appear to be children, trust me when I say that "kids" of all ages will LOVE this music.It is just what I needed to fill the air during my upcoming Vintage Themed Halloween Bash (Adults Only).The tunes are very catchy.It will be hard to go back to the typical Halloween mixes after this one.ENJOY!!!

A 70s Classic - Don'tmiss it!
This improved version of "The Best Of Bread" compared with the original LP version (thanks to the A-1 wizards of Rhino Records), contains almost all the greatest hits of this band.If you got crazy for the blond girl next door to your parents' when you were a 70s teenager, or that funny-freckled cheerleader you met at Junior High, this CD is for you! Anyway, if you never heard wonderful romantic pop before, get this one and go straight to "Baby I'm-A Want You", "Make It With You", "The Guitar Man" and "Aubrey". After that, sure you'll understand why today's "Pop" music, is real crap (bye-bye, James Blunt!...)

One of My Favorite Albums of All Time!
This is one of those albums you have to have in your collection if you are a music enthusiast. All of the songs are so original and beautiful. My favorites are "Look What You've Done To Me", "Surrender", "Everything I Own", "If", "Diary"....oh heck, I'm just about to list whole darn CD! If you like any songs by Bread you won't regret owning THIS CD!

Wonder Bread
I kept this particular album sandwiched (no pun intended) between my Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, and ELO records in case one of my friends' accidentally pulled it out and chastised me for listening to a group that was so sappy, so mellow, and so lightweight. To the untrained ear, maybe they appeared to be that way but because I grew up in a household that not only loved and appreciated music, I respected that this was a group that turned out some extremely well-crafted music. Of course, I couldn't tell this to my "hard rock buddies" because I would like even more of a dork, but I just really secretly felt and still feel that this was a very powerful group that offered some incredible music.

Any good singer can interpret a song, but it takes a stylist to make it his own. James Taylor is a stylist. This 20-track anthology obviously can't chronicle much more than the hits and high points of Taylor's career, but it nonetheless captures the artistic essence of a performer who's become a virtual synonym for "singer-songwriter" since his emergence in the late '60s. A lot of ink has been spilled ruminating about Taylor's role in soothing a '60s-burned generation, but given his own well-known demons (depression, addiction) his gentle voice often sounds like the physician wisely healing himself. His muse seems fully formed from the opening "Something in the Way She Moves," a track cut for the Beatles' Apple label in late ‘68 (and one that seems to share some symbiotic relationship with George Harrison's own classic "Something" from the period), its tone at once familiar and inviting--if ripe for a few decades of parody--as it wends its way from his seminal early '70s hits through a slate of later originals, R&B ("How Sweet It Is," "Handy Man") and pop ("Up On the Roof") covers. Tellingly, he delivers those chestnuts with an offhand confidence and illumination that makes them his own, a sense that informs even his jazz and Brazilian ("Only a Dream a Rio") flirtations. The set's newly recorded bonus cut, John Sheldon's "Bittersweet," is a pleasant pop confection that showcases Taylor's knack for being laconic and upbeat in the same breath. Read more

The Best One Disc Compilation of the Man That's Out There!
This is by far the best compilation of JT's work that's out there.Not only are the 20 tracks here truly representative of the best that JT's ever done, the sound quality is brilliant as the tracks have also been very well remastered.For those of you who are sticklers for detail and order, the tracks are arranged in chronological order as well and yet the album does not sound as disjointed as you might expect.The liner notes albeit short have been written by JT himself too.JT is that special individual who has managed to carve out his own unique sound and his works are able to evoke great emotion out of his listeners with the ability to transport them to other worlds. Great remastered sound, great value for money and great songwriting make this a must have in any music-lover's collection.Very highly recommended.

Who could hate James Taylor? His tender voice is light and lyrical and it takes me back to sweet summer memories. It's nice to listen when you want to be in a peaceful state of mind.

There's a cynical adage that argues if you stand still long enough, history will eventually catch up with you. It's tempting to say that about Barry Manilow, an artist whose stubborn, quarter-century dedication to old-fashioned song craft and musical melodrama has earned him few critical praises but a loyal worldwide following in the millions. When a cult of 20-something would-be lounge lizards tried to cash in on Manilow's shtick in the 1990s, they distanced themselves from its emotional potency with telling dollops of irony and retro-hip cynicism--anything to keep from looking too sincere. This album serves up the high points of Manilow's long, successful career, rightly focusing on the long string of '70s hits that built both his legend and record label. They're a body of songs whose solid craftsmanship is undeniable, but it's Manilow's sincerity that crucially sells them--indeed, he didn't write "I Write the Songs," but who could doubt him? It's an odd tribute that much here--"Mandy," "Looks Like We Made It," "Copacabana," et. al.--has become the palette for a popular entertainment spectrum that somehow encompasses endless hotel piano bars on one flank and TV sketch-com parody on the other. Good to remember that kitsch, by definition, requires a deep and lasting impact on the culture. Modern Crooner Helps Fill the Bill
Unabashedly romantic and sentimental, Barry Manilow has always filled the need for uplifting pop music.Taking the lead from other famous crooners, his pop sensibility brought heartwarming smiles throughout the seventies.'Ultimate Manilow' makes the rest of his collections obsolete.(Although notice how quickly his 'Best Songs of the Fifties' hit the top of the charts "even now".)It must be conceded that his voice is a mixed blessing.It is engaging and reverent to the subject matter, but while many of his songs soar with the orchestration, on the biggest notes his voice falters.Nevertheless, the songs are great.He particularly arises to the occasion on such classics as "Mandy," "Weekend in New England," and "Somewhere in the Night".Although the most progressive numbers of his songlist are the best, including "It's a Miracle," "Daybreak," and the big band jazzy "Bandstand Boogie".Not for the cynical, Manilow can break the ice with heartfelt classics, like "Tryin' to Get the Feeling," and "Can't Smile Without You".Not all of it is great, however."This One's for You" and "Copacabana (At the Copa) demonstrate banality, even if the latter edges out with some winning entertainment.The less familiar material near the end are welcome additions to his familiar repertoire.For those of us who don't mind conventional popular music, Barry Manilow fits the bill with an uplifting, traditional catalog of music that has aged well with the production.Who else since Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, or Dean Martin has managed to keep crooner pop classics going past the sixties?

I love that quote. I have always adored Manilow's music, never liking it from a so-called "ironic" standpoint. This is great baroque pop music, a lot of which Manilow wrote himself. This stuff works as well as it does because Manilow is SO sincere, so real, so passionate. I don't feel ashamed at all for liking this (I dig bubblegum music, which Barry's music has similarities, but his is much more resonant). This CD is all you really need in terms of greatest hits. The 4 CD box set has mostly outtakes and alternative takes, which are nowhere near as good as the final products. This set is must cheaper, and there's nothing superfluous on this CD. I love this stuff, and not from a Generation X, "ironic", standpoint.

Kicking off A&M's ambitious Cat Stevens reissue program is this 20-song introduction. The set surveys all of Stevens's stages, from the orchestrated late-1960s sides through his early-'70s peak to his more eclectic late-1970s experiments. Following the progression makes for an interesting endeavor as Stevens learns to harness his ambitious ideas with arrangements that don't obscure his rhapsodic messages. Few artists of his generation were more gifted when it came to plucking timeless melodies out of thin air, and his sumptuous voice was always able to movingly convey his bittersweet lyrics. As a career overview (including one previously unreleased cut) this set achieves its goal, hitting all of the chart successes along the way and basically defining his role as a sensitive '70s singer-songwriter, but some fans may opt for the classic early-'70s studio records, which find Stevens at his most consistently touching. Good Old America

I would highly recommend this CD in any colllector's library. It is a fine selection of perhaps the most memorable recordings of a folk-rock genius. Cat Stevens displays that mellow, serene style of singing that captivates the listener and brings back a feeling of youth and rejuvenates the mind.

Although the prime exponents of the '70s California soft rock style were album artists such as America, Bread, and Poco, Seals and Crofts--essentially an AM singles band--have aged even better. The key is in their tight songwriting. "Summer Breeze," "Diamond Girl," and the rest of the hits display an odd, but apt, sense of arrangement and instrumentation--and enough of a rock & roll sensibility to keep their sound from slumping into period piece laid-backism. Case in point: The duo's first band was the Champs, noted for the fake-Latin crudhopper "Tequila." Even so, it's not grit, but ace songcraft that captures the prize here. Seals and Crofts...Evil Influences? I Think Not...
I was exposed to this particular album in 1980. My soon to be brother-in-law had just become a "Born Again" Christian and was trying to purge himself of all "evil" influences. The dummy threw this album away along with many other great records out by the curb. I have heard Seals and Crofts referred to as many things, but I've never heard them referred to as "evil".
A great album
At the very beginning of the 1970s, Jim Seals and Dash Crofts left the rather unsuccessful band that they had belonged to, and set out on their own. The rest, as they say, is history. Seals & Crofts produced some of the most recognizable soft rock songs of the 1970s - I mean, who hasn't heard Diamond Girl, Hummingbird, and Summer Breeze.

Beware that this album contains very few actual charted hits & mostly what I suppose are album cuts.I am so tired of seeing this kind of practice from the record companies.Greatest hits should mean just that-greatest hits!The record companies scream when they think they are being duped or cheated by the public but seem to think it is fine for them to do the same thing, I will never understand this. ... I am no longer sure whether it is a good thing to remember when an album was first released.I recall when "Teaser and the Firecat" was issued, and the enthusiasm that greeted it on AM radio.Cat Stevens, who eschewed commercial success, was a pop star.Perhaps a bigger surprise should have been that many of the songs are folk songs, many of which are contemplative and occasionally introspective, rather than the lightweight "bubble gum" pop that seemed to dominant AM at the time.Perhaps it was partially that contrast that made this album so successful.

HOW ABOUT A REMASTER OF THE WB ALBUMS!!!???
These are all great tunes and for someone not fully engulfed in JT, this will do for the earlier years. My gripe is, some thirty plus years alter, the WB albums are still not remastered and sorely need to be. The CD versions are poorly done and the sound could be vastly improved with even a good EQ. Some bonus tracks and aremastering would be nothing short of ectasy for JT fans, of whom there are still many

As I grow older I find myself looking more and more for those CDs that relax me, mellow me, and soothe me. This is one of my favorite CDs for doing just that. I mean, I liked JT even in my 20s, but now that I'm in my 40s, I really appreciate the guy.

I never realized that I liked this band!
I just saw them at the KY state fair with Rick Springfield a few days ago. I didn't realize how many of their songs that I knew, but didn't know who had recorded them.
Firefall Greatest Hits
If you are a Firefall fan you will love this CD. It has all the best hits from their song catalog. I enjoy listening to this CD from beginning to end. There are 18 tracks on this CD making it well worth the price, a must for your CD collection. I would give this CD five stars, but I reserve that kind of recognition for truly exceptional things.

If you are into very soft "rock" or are into Adult Oriented Rock of the 70's and early 80's, then you'll just love this band.All the tracks here have been remastered by Rhino and so you know you're going to get good sound quality: all 18 of them!Good value for money and worth the 3 stars for "Always", "You Are the Woman" and "Just Remember I Love You" with the rest of the tracks being rather forgettable.Good harmonies over mellow, soft rock but one can't help but think that there were so many others out there during their time who have done that particular genre a whole lot more justice than this band.I'd say Firefall is maybe two thirds as good as Orleans with regards the quality of their songs and maybe only a third as good as Ambrosia, Player etc.Still, if you are into this band, this version is probably the best overall best of compilation that's out there. ... The best of Air Supply
I love air supply simply because of their slow love songs. I would listen to love songs anytime since i am a born romantic. This CD gets an A because of obvious reasons mentioned as follows.

I couldn't resist buying this for myself and I am so glad.These guys are so singable.I had to listen to it on the way to work this morning and it is really making a difference in my day.When you drive in traffic singing along to "every woman in the world to me" if really perks you up and makes you forget the traffic!I have a friend who's 10yrs older than me and she thinks I'm too young to love these guys but I've been singing along with this guys for 29 years.How can I deny my love for them?I hope my sister gets the cd too.She would LOVE it!
