Editorial Review

Billy Idol's secret is one that he shares with, of all people, Trent Reznor--the ability to take a pop base and disguise it with layers of other genres, most notably hard rock. His adaptability is on display throughout this 16-song career retrospective. It's amazing just how well the former Generation X frontman's songs have aged. Songs such as the disco-punk hit "Dancing with Myself," "White Wedding," and "Cradle of Love" are as appealing as ever, as is even "Shock to the System," just about the only listenable thing from 1993's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional best-of set
Of course you know all these songs, and of course there are many more great cuts deeper on the original albums, but for a single-disc review of a band with over 10 years' worth of releases, this 18-track set is hard to beat. The group went through several striking stylistic changes over its lifetime, but that variation actually helps this disc hold together as an album as well as a set of songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars A nice compilation of The Talking Heads
I've always liked The Talking Heads, they always had catchy songs that were fun to listen to. I must admit, my favorite of theirs has always been "Burning Down The House", but there are so many good songs on here, as well. The Talking Heads were one of the best bands of the 80's, that's when they had their best work. The 70's were ok, too, but their 80's work really shined. I'm quite happy with this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Articulate Collection
Oddly, a compilation by Talking Heads should come out uneven and disjointed, but this collection is marvelously done. The songs meld well together and provide a sampler that wouldn't prevent anyone from buying their excellent original albums.('Talking Heads '77,' 'Remain in Light,' and 'Speaking in Tongues' are their crowning achievements artistically, but 'Fear of Music,' 'More Songs About Buildings and Food,' and 'True Stories' demonstrate that they had a great repertoire. (Unlike, 'Sand in the Vaseline,' which is also excellent, but perhaps takes too many gems and doesn't align them as well.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD
Pushed all my buttons - great songs - great singer - great collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars You gotta have this one!
You can find almost every Cyndi's classic hits in the collection CD. From 1983 to 1997, the girl's anthem-"Girls Just Want To Have Fun" to the cool rock tune-"Sisters Of Avalon". Besides, the rare track out of "The Goonies" OST-"The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" is available here as well!

While English pop monarchs Duran Duran have remained active for two decades, it's clear that the indomitable ensemble was at its peak during those mercurial '80s. This greatest-hits collection documents the band's ambitious beginnings as a funky glam-rock outfit and follows its gradual transformation into a high-tech pop band with loads of commercial appeal. Featuring now-classic tunes like "Girls on Film," "Rio," and "Planet Earth" as well as more recent songs like "Ordinary World," Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars just good stuff
This has every good and great song Duran Duran has done to date.
3-0 out of 5 stars Had all my faves but a couple were "snipped"
Had all the favorites I love and remember, but was very dissappointed by the shortened versions of "Save A Prayer" and "Hungry Like the Wolf".Yes, us true Durannies know the difference!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a Single Duran Duran Hit Missing
This compilation contains all Duran Duran's hits. From "The Reflex," "Rio," "Save a Prayer," and other eighties classics to some of their later tunes like "Come Undone" and "Electric Barabella," it spans their entire career as influential new-wave musicians.

Editorial Review

Emerging, literally, from the streets of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they gained notoriety through busking, this strange trio led by guitarist-vocalist Gordon Gano became a cult favorite with their self-titled debut album in 1983. Influenced greatly by Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers, the Femmes' minimalist sound pitted Gano's low-volume electric guitar against Brian Ritchie's acoustic bass guitar and Victor De Lorenzo's ashcanlike homemade drum kit--all of which only served to make Gano's angst-ridden adolescent tirades more arresting. Highlights here are the rockabillyish "Gone Daddy Gone," the snotty "Kiss Off," and the emblematically nervous "Blister in the Sun." All in all, a fond reminder of the innocent days of alt-rock. (Note: The 20th anniversary deluxe version of the album includes an additional 26 demos and live tunes, 22 of them never before released.) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good album but,
Don't pass up Hallowed Ground you won't be disappointed. This first album was such an over played college classic that I think the lyrics have been burned into my brain. It's hard to be listening to this and not reminiscing about 1983. I find it hard to believe that you do not already own this. It's so pivotal in musical history that it will eventually be submitted as an icon of popular culture. The "bonus" tracks kind of blow but I am not entirely sure that it's because they disturb the original flow of the album or if they actually blow. Ugly is awful and I feel that Gimme The Car would have worked better on Hallowed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD, From Beginning to End
Most teens and young adults today are familiar with Blister in The Sun.But that is just one of the catchy and sincere songs on this CD.The Femmes are probably considered a "one hit wonder", if even that. But truly, every song here makes me want to dance and sing along. They are all unique and some are brutally honest.I just love this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than Milwaukee Beast.
If there's one thing the Violent Femmes are great at, it's making relatively simple music with witty, snarling lyrics.Gordon Gano's distinct vocals (which I find sexy) are the clear highlight of this debut album.I was in the midst of my teen angst when I bought it, and every song seemed PERFECT - it spoke right to me.He's vulnerable when it comes to girls and god damn, he's pissed about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Police - 'Greatest Hits' (Polygram)
Nice! Sixteen track compilation of the Police's best work, of course their hits.Nothing new here, just most of the tunes that any true Police fan holds sacred within their hallowed CD collection.Tracks like "Roxanne", "Message In A Bottle", "Bed's Too Big Without You", "Invisible Sun" and the spiritual "Wrapped Around Your Finger" makes me often think these guys really should reunite at some point. How many of you feel the same way?

5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection, far superior to the US collections
There have been three collections of the "best" of The Police. The first, EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE: THE SINGLES, was released in 1986.More recently, we were given the U.S. release EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE: THE CLASSICS, which contains the biggest Police titles as well as "Don't Stand So Close to Me '86" and a remixed version of "Message in a Bottle".What most people don't know about is this lovely little set, titled simply GREATEST HITS.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Police
The Police Greatest Hits cd is one worth purchasing buy one for the house and one for the car.I really love eight of the songs that are in this compilation. When I first heard "Every Breath You Take" I was instantly impressed the bass playing at the introduction of this song is really nice and still today even thouigh they are not together Sting is the glue that held The Police together he wrote many of the song they sang as well as played several instruments."Don't Stand So Close to Me"reminds me of what a person might say when they get mad at their little brother or sister or if someone is just in their space.I think we can identify with title if nothing else.Another song that stays in your head all day if you listen to it is "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da"it is just a fun sounding song it makes you wonder where Stings gets the titles from. But all and all this is a really great cd.Stings

Editorial Review

The debate over whether he is punk or new wave is long over; today Elvis Costello is less likely to be found on a list with Strummer and Scabies than he is with Bacharach and David and Jimmy Webb. Lauded initially for his energetic and literate attacks on the social ills of Thatcher's England, he has become a peerless master of the popular song. The evolution of Costello's craft as a songwriter and performer, from the early high-octane polemics, through his stylistic experiments with country and soul, and on to standards written for others, is splendidly documented on this elegant two-disc set. Chronology is ignored in favor of a thoughtful program that catalogs the jewels from his prolific output and a sprinkling of covers that demonstrate the maturing of his singing voice. The 42 tracks here lean generously to the first 10 years with the Attractions, but also collects the best of his subsequent collaborations with the cream of America's session musicians and on through to "She," his contribution to the soundtrack of 1999's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, even for the passing Costello fan
I was never a big Costello fan but I enjoyed a few songs of his. This compilation has enough "hits" to have kept me listening while I learned to appreciate his the lesser known songs. Now some of those are my favorite.
5-0 out of 5 stars The stand outs
This CD is an great compilation of EC's best work. I have to say my favorite song on the whole thing is unfortunately the shortest. His version of My Funny Valentine has to be his vocal masterpiece. His voice was meant for that song. The other bluesy cuts are excellent (Riot Act and Almost Blue). Yes, the upbeat stuff is great too but I do hope someday he rediscovers that early edgy attitude and does a whole set of blues songs. At any rate, this CD set is a must-have!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's incredible, but I can't recommend it.
Costello is one of the absolute all time greats in 20th century music. (thus the 5 stars) I cannot say you should buy this album when their is a much better substitute. It will cost a bit more but it is very much worth it: Buy The Best of Elvis costello and the attractions (a different one, not this one). And buy The best of Elvis Costello (Extreme Honey). They both contain many must-have gems that are sadly overlooked on this newer addition to the Macmanus Canon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the UK Version
All tracks are classics in their own way a must have for any diehard New order fan as the track listing differs from the UK version. Gone are the tracks found on Substance and in come the opening tracks from new orders first 3 albums + Lets Go(Nothing for me) a barnstormer of a track which I believe is only available on here or on the Retro box set. All in all a fine add on to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars 7 Years and Going Strong
That's how long it's been since I've discovered New Order and, consequently, it's also how long they've been my favorite band.I am reviewing this album a second time because I forgot the e-mail and password I had for my other account (brilliant move, I know). With that said, this sweet, resplendent compilation was the second CD I purchased by the group, following Substance. While I love both collections with about the same intensity now, I have to admit that I liked New Order's "Best Of" much more at the start. While Substance is an awesome album of singles that is a nessecity for any true fan of the band, "The Best Of New Order" is more accessible to new fans as well as to those who may be only casual listeners. The songs are short, but sweet: an excellent fusion of rock, pop and techno. It's difficult to choose the standouts, because doing so would mean having to name at least 3/4's of the tracks on this CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Innovative
I'm a college student, and I find that current pop music doesn't do it for me. In fact, most of my friends listen to music that dates from the 1960s to the early 90s. I love this CD, New Order is very easy to listen to and enjoy. You can even hear the foundations of modern day house music within some of the tracks. The melancholy tone of the lead singer is definitive of a lot of the pop in the 80s, yet he does not bore you. Although I do admit, you can tell that all the tracks have somewhat of a general way of being constructed; so I recommend listening to the 30 second snippets that Amazon provides to decided if you really want to buy it. However, if you want a CD that is somewhat definitive of 80s Brit Pop, and made a huge impact on the Pop scene, I would definitely recommend buying this. It's a great compilation of the music by New Order. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
Blondie is one of the greatest and most important bands in the history of pop/rock to have ever existed. While Grace Slick might have predated one-time Playboy bunny/vocalist Deborah Harry, Ms. Harry still set all of the standards as far as any future women in rock. She showed that it was possible for an extremely attractive female to front an all male backing band and do it with style, sex appeal and genuine raw talent while not coming across as a tramp.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best Blondie compilation out there
With a few options available for you to get your hands on Blondie's greatest hits, and pretty much little new to say about the guys that blended punk and new wave to perfection in their time, the one thing that can be claimed about this compilation is that it's the best one available. It covers pretty much everything you'd want to have by the band and the quality of the recordings is also the best one around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Iconic Memory Of Blondie Still Extent!
The works of Blondie are paragons of the new-wave punk genre on their own without any help of compilation or amassing, but the main priority needed to be mentioned is how one can adequately mix these supreme works of sound and emotion into such a phenomenal and superior mix, as an impressive result; "Blondie's Greatest Hits". From the disco upbeat of "Heart Of Glass" to the romanticly provocative single "Denis", from the tropical flare of "The Tide Is High" to the industrial beats and vocals of "The Hardest Part", this album mix, in the entirety of my life of being a Blondie aficionado and music collector, is one that surpasses any limit of Blondie's quality and proficiency, portraying to the world of their appeal, greatness and utter legacy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Heady Subject Matter Masqueraded As Satire...Or Not.
I've always admired Men At Work's brief yet substantive output. Though their reign on the charts lasted just a year or so, Their tunes had an infectiousness about them that endures the ages. Clever lyricism married to largely ebullient and catchy arrangements, Men At Work were for a time masters of the pop/rock game. And each tune covered a topic of note.
3-0 out of 5 stars Their hits are good... but there aren't THAT many of them...
I had great memories of Men at Work from my high school days in the '80s. I really wanted some of their hits in my collection, especially those that only occasionally play on the radio, like "Overkill." They aren't available on iTunes at this writing, so I had to buy a CD.

This is the only Howard Jones album you'll ever need. HoJo was a founder of early '80s synth-pop, which was as easy to sing to as it was to dance to. The rhythms on this record pop like new wave corn kernels in heated oil, tempered by Jones's high-strung vocals extending over the top. Jones makes good use of the bright synth piano patches available during that time, especially during "Things Can Only Get Better." "No One Is to Blame" is a solid ballad, just Jones and his keyboard. It's heartfelt and regretful--a little cheesy, but in a good way. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best singers of the 1980s
There are some songs that I like in this collection like "What Is Love?," "Things Can Only Get Better," "No ONe is To Blame," and "Everlasting Love." HOward Jones has always had a great voice and probably still does. His music is soulful and smooth. I was surprised to like the song, "I.G.Y (What A Beautiful World)," which became a personal favorite. The other songs in this collection like "New Song," "Pearl In The Shell," "Always Asking Questions," "Like To Get To Know You Well," "Life In One Day," "You Know I Love You.. Don't You?," "Hide And Seek," "Look Mama," "The Prisoner," "Lift Me Up," "Tears To Tell," "Two Souls," and "City Song"are only some of his greatest music. I don't think Howard Jones and his music or voice should ever be forgotten. I think his voice is timeless and his songs are classic love ballads.
5-0 out of 5 stars HOJO...a talent in an age of vision
By the above, I mean the need for the visual, the image.Howard Jones brought these to the table as well.Spikey hair, veggie hippie who made videos that were inventive and quite entertaining. But in the end, it is all about the music, and here is where Howard Jones will leave a mark in history.
4-0 out of 5 stars After 20 years, a memorable return HoJo-land!
My sister got me hooked on Howard Jones about the same time she got me hooked on Pet Shop Boys and The Art of Noise, circa 1985-1987.This was long before I began forming my own musical tastes, and in 2002 when my wife and I liquidated our entire cassette collection in favor of going strictly digital, I had not intended to re-purchase any of the Howard Jones albums in CD, simply because I felt I had, at age 29, outgrown them.

This compilation, while not comprehensive, either on The Police or Sting's solo career has good songs, just not very complete. Most holidays exclude somebody--on grounds of religious beliefs, political persuasion, or refusal to eat our fine feathered friends--but not good old Halloween, which has a little something for everyone. The same can be said of this 15-track collection, which spans modern music's sonic and sensory spectrums. It encompasses the noisy and danceable, nasty and nice. Most of the set is given over to party-ready tunes like the B-52's' "Devil in My Car" and the Ramones' "Pet Sematary," but its darker corners offer up a few eerie moments--such as MX-80 Sound's rendition of the horror classic "Theme from Halloween" and Sonic Youth's "Halloween." The disc closes on an appropriately creepy note thanks to horror master Roky Erickson, who spins a cautionary yarn called "Creature with the Atom Brain" that's guaranteed to cause more nightmares than a Milk Dud overdose. Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Halloween is probably their best entry in that it will have the broadest appeal.A lively party of Halloween-themed music, it swings from the danceable to the dangerous, sometimes with little or no warning.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE WEDDING SINGER ROCKS!!!
I love The Wedding Singer! It is my favorite movie ever!!! I can watch it over and over again and not get tired of it. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore rock! Plus, not only is the movie awesome, but the soundtrack is awesome too! You can never get enough of The Wedding Singer! brie in washington (and to make the point straight, I AM almost 14, so haha to being a kid, even if this last statement was immature.)

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the songs I'm looking for ...
... isn't on this collection. OR 'Vol. 2' of this soundtrack series. If only The Cure's "Boy's Don't Cry" (in the film, it is playing in the background during the scene when Robby's best friend, Sammy, is visiting him in his basement apartment) was on either the first or second soundtrack disc of this film, there wouldn't be hesitancy to purchase (nor would there be this review, so there's the upside!).Seriously, I'm still gonna get both these discs. However, the only reason I can figure that The Cure is not on these is licensing issues.

Editorial Review

Few filmmakers managed to capture the awkward coming-of-age catastrophes of '80s teens the way John Hughes did, just as few soundtracks encapsulate the sound of an era better than this one does. It's not the best 1986 had to offer, but it's a cohesive whole, transporting the listener to that other time, imagined or otherwise. There's enough variety to ensure that it doesn't become wallpaper, and very little filler. "Left of Center" by Suzanne Vega, with Joe Jackson on piano, is tremendous and transcends generations. Psychedelic Furs frontman Richard Butler has long been bemused about Hughes not taking Molly Ringwald's character's name from the title song, which inspired the film, but everyone was paying too much attention to what Ducky was wearing to notice anyway. --Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for fans of the film or anything 80s
John Hughes' "Pretty in Pink" has always been a favorite movie of mine. I fell in love with it immediately. It is easily one of the greatest teen movies ever and is rivaled only by "The Breakfast Club" as the best "Brat Pack" flick of the 80s.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much loved music
I was in HS when the movie/music came out.Wore out my tape, twice, and melted another on my car dash in the hot sun and had to wrestle a fourth tape copy from my little brother who'd since discovered how awesome the Furs and Bunnymen were.Ahhh, memories.Still enjoy a good reminiscing now and then.I think I've gotta break down and buy it on CD finally!(Four rather than five stars just means I'm a tough grader! It's a great album, nice mix, very 80's retro.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
I had watched Pretty in Pink a couple of times when I was about four. Years went by, and I found myself in a used CD store, throwing over a couple of bucks for this soundtrack, I went home, stuck it in my CD player, and all of these memories from the movie came rushing back, I cried. It was so odd, I hadn't remembered any of the movie before then, but the minute If you Leave came on, I could picture Andy hugging Ducky....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pretenders-A Working Band That Just Has The Look
I don't know why but when I think of Chrissie Hynde, I am reminded of Robert Plant. Led Zep plucked Robert out of some obscure English countryside village and blasted him off to Rock and Roll nobility. He had the look and he could dish it out. That's exactly why Chrissie brings up Robert Plant to me and vice versa. Chrissie was admitedly in some minor Ohio suburban laundromat watching the machine spin in it's monotonous cadence but she did have the look and when you buy this cd, The Pretenders Greatest Hits, you will quickly realize that Chrissie has the rock power to blow the roof off any respectable Super 8 in town. My favorite Pretender entries are Talk of the Town, Middle of the Road, and Brass in Pocket. All of these coupled with Chrissie Hynde on lead vocals and guitar is like watching a panther claw down a gazelle-it's sheer power and momentum. As I started to say and now expand, I know this review surrounds the Pretenders but just remember, Robert Plant, Steve Tyler, Steve Perry, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, all have to have the look and the power and Chrissie Hynde has that hands down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection
This is an updated collection from the earlier Greatest Hits collection and conatins some of their 90's hits. All Pretenders CDs not equal as their first was just SO good that you'd like to see more from that disc like "Mystery Acheivement" and "Stop Your Sobbing" and less from some later discs. What's here is great music , though, and it's probably a sign that a great band like the Pretenders need 2 discs to squeeze in all their hits, key album tracks, and concert favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Pretenders hits package
This is similar to the "Singles" cd but contains more songs and is remastered. It focuses on their more radio friendly songs, so the more thumpy or punkish songs are not here. Thats good for me as this has the Pretenders sound that I want. ... Read more

Editorial Review

There was a time when you couldn't step into a dance club without hearing at least part of this recording booming over the sound system. The often over-played hit, "Situation," was a bubbling caldron of nasally synth noodlings, a whopping bass line, and drum machine wallops. Alison Moyet's looped laugh in the middle of the song ended up as a sample, over-used a thousand times over. Yaz was an interesting blend of Moyet's smoky blues and jazz tinged vocals with Vince Clarke's digital disco. Moyet's voice alone was instrument enough, and the melodies here perfectly showcased her incredible range. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't go.....
You'll NEVER remove this disc from your player. This is a promise to all the music lovers out there.Young and old alike. This collection of tracks sways from the digital orgasm of Clarke's instrumentation to the bassa boom of Moyet's vocals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't get it out of my mind
These comments apply to "Upstairs at Eric's" and "You and Me Both" by Yaz:
5-0 out of 5 stars odd pairing, brilliant results
the marriage of uber-goofy, reclusive synth god/godfather and soul/jazz vocalist/temptress alison moyet seems an unlikely pairing; however, if opposite really do attract, then this is a match made in heaven.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Collection
I haven't cared for much pop music since the late 60's, but the Bangles are enjoyable listening for anyone. The harshest reviewers of this album complain about not enough good songs and then go on to name 3 or 4 that are good. How many times does an album have more than one good hit song? This one has several outstanding songs and the remaining ones are good listening too."Going Down to Liverpool" repeates a little too much, but I still like the song.Manic Monday, Eternal Flame and Hazy Shade of Winter are all excellent.Walk Like An Egyptian was a big hit and it's on here too of course. This is a good album and probably a good introduction to the Bangles. It has enough variety to keep it interesting and enough hits to probably more than justify the Greatest Hits title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never gets old
The Bangles are great group that never goes out of style...I remember as a child purchasing the Manic Monday 45rpm.....and I played it over and over......When this was released..I bought it and of course all the hits are here....Standouts are If She Knew What She Wants,Manic Monday,Eternal Flame,In Your Room,Walk Like An Egyptian,Walking Down Your Street,A Hazy Shade Of Winter, and Be With You...........MAKE SURE YOU GET A COPY OF THIS GREAT ALBUM FROM A GREAT GROUP!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Girl Groups of the 80s
During the 80s, the Bangles solidified themselves not only as one of the best girl groups, but one of the best groups overall. This CD contains an anthology of their greatest hits and will take you back in time to the 80s.

4-0 out of 5 stars Belinda Carlisle - Greatest hits...
An excellent collection! The only reason why I don't give this collection Five Stars is that "the powers that be" failed to give us both the Solo and "Gogo's" songs featuring Belinda Carlisle on 1 (maybe 2?) CD's!!Now, that would have rated Five+ Stars.'Till that day - Four stars!!Bravo, Belinda!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection
Belinda Carlisle's greatest hits from her four I.R.S. and MCA solo albums just showed her growth. Most of the attention has been on major hits Heaven Is A Place on Earth and Mad About You, but my true favorite from her is Circle in The Sand, which is on here.I still love that song any time it plays in a store or if I play it on a stereo. Imagine yourself on a beach when you hear that song instead of just straight up listening to it. It has such an airy landscape for a pop song, and I like the acoustic guitar playing on it as well as the sound effects of water splashing on the beach. I remembered hearing it a lot between April and June of 1988. This made me accept Belinda more as an artist and more than just being in the Go-Go's.Carlisle matured a lot on the '87 album and just got better on the next couple of albums. While her later stuff hasn't created the buzz as her first efforts, this is a good collection of Belinda's best records.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ClassyEx Go Gos Singer Can Really Rock!!!
I just love this album which proves that Belinda Carlisle is more than just another pretty face although I do like the Playboy magazine that she appeared in. My favourite track on this album would have to be "Mad About You" with it'svery effective bass guitar introduction which sounds like the beating heart of a woman in love! Belinda is HOT and she can really ROCK!!! ... Read more
