Most of Sam Cooke's pop hits were sugary, blanched affairs. This album was the real deal, giving us the church-reared R&B singer who liked to tear up the clubs along the Southern chitlin circuit. Recorded in Florida in 1963, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST
Many consider this to be the best live soul recording made to date. After listening to this album, you will know why this is the case. I have NEVER heard energy from a recorded live performance like the energy that is bottled up in these recorded songs. Sam Cooke was as good a soul singer as there ever was and we are so lucky to have a glimpse into how good he was, even if we weren't around to witness it in his heyday. You can close your eyes and really feel like you were in that club in Miami in 1963 -- it's a magical thing. Get this and you won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars oh God
The Sam Cooke of Live at the Harlem Square Club always does the right thing. He believes that people are basically good, and that everything's going to turn out okay. He believes in humanity, and with the audience singing along all over this album, you almost get the idea that humanity is backing him up on that. If you want to hear an honestly hopeful album, then buy this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The young man you've all been waiting for, Mister Soul!
Sam Cooke is revered as the definitive soul singer. This is a great recording of Sam in concert at a black nightclub.Sam holds the audience in the palm of his hand for the whole show.He sings in a grittier, more "urban" style than he used on his hit records.Amazingly, this great recording was unreleased at the time it was recorded, and didn't come out til over 20 years later. But it's available now, and all Sam Cooke fans should get it. ... This entertaining live show from New York's Rainbow & Stars club in 1995 joins singing sisters Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway. The former is a suave jazz singer with a darker tone and sensational versatility; the latter is a clear-as-a-bell soprano best known for her late-'90s stint as Broadway's Grizabella in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves...
Ann Hampton and Liz Callaway have been well-known by Broadway and Cabaret afficionados for years. This CD, recorded live at the Rainbow & Stars in 1995 is a wonderful showcase for older sister Ann's deep jazz-tinged crooning and younger sister Liz's clear-bell Broadway soprano. Together or apart, their singing is definitely top notch.5-0 out of 5 stars Never Such Devoted Sisters
I listened to Liz Callaway's album The Story Goes On, also on here, in a store and wondered where I had heard her voice.I remembered hearing her as the singing voice of Anastacia in the animated musical and liked her voice then.I fell in love with her voice and purchased that cd.I checked on Amazon for other recordings and saw this one so I ordered it.I loved it. The best song by Ann Hampton Callaway is My Buddy, My Old Friend. It is sure to make you cry and I play it over and over.I already had Liz Callaway's album and one of her songs is on this album as well as The Story Goes On, "Meadowlark"which she does with such a clear voice and this is a great arrangement of the song.I am partial to Liz's voice although they blend well together and as I stated earlier, "My Buddy... is a 3 hankee weeper song with a gorgeous piano and vocal arrangement. The duets including "The Nanny" and "Friendship" are fun to listen to.I was a big fan of The Nanny show so I enjoyed hearing that again and remember Friendship mostly from I Love Lucy episode. I enjoy the banter between the two sisters with cracks on age and who has won the most awards and The Big Medley is fun and has great vocals as well.It has many familiar songs from Broadway and elsewhere including Enough is Enough( Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer, Sisters from White Christmas, Happy Days are Here Again/Get Happy that Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland sang.I don't know what else to say to sell you on this album. This album and Liz Callaway's solo are probably two of the best cds I ever owned and I own hundreds so that is saying a lot.I am sure you won't be disappointed in this cd!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for any self-respecting theatre-goer!
Ann and Liz really shine on this one.Their mix of Broadway and jazz styles, along with their great senses of humor, make this one of my all-time favorite cd's.Sorry Alice & Emily, these "real" sisters have you beat! ... Read more

I purchased two of the Patsy Cline CDs as family gifts. They were a big hit to the over 50 crowd. Patsy is a favorite.

This is a wonderful collection/story that honors Patsy Cline. It is entertaining and the recordings are great! You will enjoy this CD tremendously, if you like Patsy Cline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homage at its best!
I saw Mandy Barnett play Patsy at the Ryman in Nashville and was sure she was lipsyncing. I was truly blown away. She has Patsy down to a "T". Of course anyone who expects the real Patsy will be disappointed because this is just an excellent interpretation of the famous country star. I would recommend this for anyone who saw the play or intends to. It is a wonderful reminder of a real friendship between Loiuse (through her story telling) and one of country musics pioneers.Read more

Close your eyes.On the left of the stage sits Elvis Costello, geeky glasses, geeky smile, a microphone in his hand.On the right, Bill Frisell sits on the edge of a little Fender amp, rocking gently, picking his guitar in only the way he can.5-0 out of 5 stars 2for2
live at the meltdown is truely one amazing piece of music. the pairing of elvis and bill was nothng short of genuis!! whether they are doing costello's "lovefield" or a mingus song "wierd nightmare" or the odd pair of writes (cait o'riordan/mac manus)"baby plays around" this CD offers nothing but talent from beginning to end. and i for one love elvis's voice

Costello and Frisell happen to be two of my favorite artists.I had no idea that this album existed--I happened to stumble upon it one day while browsing through Amazon.com.I think they compliment each other pretty well.I particularly like the rendition of 'Baby Plays Around,' a gem from Costello's 'Spike' album that unfortunately often gets overlooked. The album has excellent sound quality.Fans of Costello and/or Frisell will dig this album. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Live Album
Like the editorial review says, Live at the Roxy comprises the live tracks from the three-quarters live Indian Summer LP.If you want the studio tracks from Indian Summer on CD, you have two choices, and they're both 24 Carrots. The U.S. Razor and Tie edition of 24 Carrots gives you three bonus tracks ("Indian Summer," "Pandora" and "Here in Angola"), while the U.K. EMI release has all five (adding "Delia's Gone and ""Princss Olivia").Unfortunately, both versions of 24 Carrots are long out of print and can get pretty pricey.5-0 out of 5 stars This was the last gasp in America...
Riding the wave of popularity in America following "Year of the Cat", Live at the Roxy was Al's last stand in America. His next release was three years away, but luckily, Live at the Roxy gave listeners a lot for their money. This album captures Al at the peak with Shot in the Dark and Peter White backing him. This album brings all his best to his fans along with great asides and songs lost in the glare of "Cat" fame. Here too is "Rihad" and a look at Al's great talent as a story teller par excellance!4-0 out of 5 stars Where's the studio stuff?

5-0 out of 5 stars Neil Diamond sings live and he never sounded better
This is my favorite Neil Diamond album, one of those rare live albums that you would rather listen to than the same songs thrown together on any one of a half-dozen greatest hits collection.Just listen to "Cherry Cherry" and that should prove the point right there.I also like to listen to the Prologue, where the strings slowly build unto the point where the guitar finally starts to play and Diamond launches into "Crunch Granola Suite."Not exactly a Neil Diamond "hit," but it makes for a great opening.Likewise, I never get tired of hearing the sweeping string arrangement on "Play Me." 5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Live Album
The very first time I played "Hot August Night" was in the dark ages of 1973.I had heard that it was perhaps the best live album of all time.I have never been a live album fan, and still am not. However, "Hot August Night" could not have been done as anything other than a live album. The ambiance of the Greek Theater in Los Angeles was the perfect setting for a singer/songwriter that performs better as a travelling troubadour than a studio musician. As a more recent example of this assertion, watch the ending of "Born in East L.A." when Neil Diamond sings "Coming to America".The song coupled with the movie and the action is a perfect fit, but I find it difficult to enjoy the song as much as a cycled FM song without the movie.5-0 out of 5 stars He is only good live
Lets face it. Just about everybody likes one Neil Diamond song or another. We just hate to admit it.For any Diamond fan they also know that Diamond is only good live on stage and that his studio works are basically a piece of [junk].This album is the one exception to all of his work.Recorded at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in August of '72. Diamond comes out in a explosive start and ends with a triumphant finish. All of Diamonds other live recordings can't match this one."Hot August Night II, "Gold", "Love at the Greek", "Live in America", these can not even come close to the power of his performance this night at the greek.I would recomend getting this album most definately. The only bad thing about it is the B-side to the first Cd which has puke-enducing bad songs.Other than that it's great. So buy it now ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars oh no!
Kenny G is one of the greatest saxophone players that ever played. HE HAS HIS OWN STLYE and solos with extraordinary taste! I Think alot of "musicians" are mad because they cant top him! Does every body like all of his songs? No!! As a matter of fact, I my self dontlike all of his songs! Those of you who hates Kenny G because of that song he dubbed over with Louis Arnstrong YOU should be ashamed! he has nothing to be ashamed about! you all need to hop off his back and stick to what you like!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wright needs help
"Kenny G is often quoted as defending his crowd-pleasing sound as instrumental pop, not jazz (despite having taken his turn at the music of Ellington, Monk, and other masters on 1999's Classics in the Key of G). Whatever--you certainly know by now whether or not you like this stuff. The multiplatinum smooth-sax man, though, has charted a steady course of blandness broken only by the occasional obnoxious foray into something he seems to think is funk. This CD of popular favorites brings every emotion down to the level of the Weather Channel-ready "Songbird," which made G a radio staple in 1987: whether accompanying Sinatra via technology or defacing the memory of Sam Cooke with the egregious Michael Bolton, it's all white noise. --Rickey Wright "

Bruce Springsteen has frequently introduced Nils Lofgren as the "greatest, most overqualified" second guitarist in rock & roll. And Lofgren will certainly be remembered as one of the great team players, first as second chair to Neil Young, more recently with the E Street Band. The fact that the Rolling Stones wanted him to replace Mick Taylor and those early tours leading Ringo Starr's band blurs the fact that Lofgren has created some terrific music of his own. This 2003 release is his fifth official live album, and while not quite the raucous affair that 1977's Read more

Short Review - This Has jumped straight to the top of my favourite live albums of all time. The newer songs are excellent and the older songs are so nostalgic. "Message" is indeed a highlight, as is "First Time...". Nils was born to sing it.

Lofgren is on tour again (heard him in NY) and if you can't make it to one of his shows, buy this record. The live sound is good and the spirit of a Nils Lofgren concert is caught quite nicely on the album.5-0 out of 5 stars It grows with each listening!

3-0 out of 5 stars I like River Deep, Mountain High!
Never heard Annie Sing "River Deep, Mountain High" before.5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Pop Single
Classy and soulful. Two adjectives that describe this single re-release of Annie Lennox's 1992 hit "Walking On Broken Glass". One of the hits from her solo debut "Diva", the song is contained here in 2 versions - a single version, and a live version recorded for MTV Unplugged during the summer of '92. Three other live cuts from that show are present here, all three with Annie's rich and alluring white soul voice. Two being choice Eurythmics tunes - "It's Alright (Baby's Comin' Back)" and "Here Comes The Rain Again". The high point for me though, is the cover of the classic "River Deep, Mountain High" - a tune she sounds great on. If you missed this single the first time, follow my advice and pick it up on it's second go round like I did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best stopgap releases ever...
This is one of Newman's best albums. It's just him, a piano, a microphone, and (what Newman claimed in an interview) about a dozen people in a club. It sounds like he's playing at your private party - you can hear the laughter of the crowd, of Newman himself, and all of the ambient noise of the club.5-0 out of 5 stars A great performance by this gifted artist.
I bought the vinyl LP version of this album more than 25 year ago when Newman was relatively unknown and it was one of my favorite albums.I sold my turntable many years ago and have not heard this since.I recently purchased the CD and am glad to hear these old songs again.5-0 out of 5 stars this is great

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the greatest diva. Buy it.
'Tina Live' (in Europe)was recorded just a year or two after I saw her perform almost exactly the same material (without the very famous duet partners, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Robert Cray, and Bryon Adams). And even though the performance I saw was at a very ordinary venue (Allentown PA fairgrounds), Miss Tina gave every bit as good a performance as she does on this album recorded in London.
5-0 out of 5 stars Live & incredible.
I'm a big fan of Tina Turner and besides having her cd's I also have some of her live videos. And if you haven't seen Tina on stage, I have to tell you that you're missing an electrifying experience.5-0 out of 5 stars Breaks Every Rule!
I hate to think what most performers today would sound like on a live album. Ugh! Fortunatley, we have Tina Turner here to show us how a live album should be done. As you listen to this set, you can almost see yourself at the various shows recorded here, with such amazing sound and precision. No matter if some songs are obviously from more than just her Break Every Rule Tour. They all rock. This woman personifies rock-and-roll more than any other female rock singer. The sound is great, obviously much attention was paid to the sound recording of this album, and it certainly paid off! This two-disc set celebrates the tenth anniversary of the John Pizzarelli Trio (with his brother Martin Pizzarelli on bass and Ray Kennedy on piano). Pizzarelli is the son of legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. Taught by his father, he grew up immersed in the world of jazz, playing with Zoot Sims by the time he was twenty. He's an easily engaging singer in the manner of Nat "King" Cole, drawing on both jazz standards and well-chosen contemporary material. Recorded at the famed New York City jazz club in the autumn of 2002, Pizzarelli mixes songs old and new into one seamless whole. George and Ira Gershwin rub shoulders with James Taylor, as he takes over the songs with his own casual confidence. The smoothness of his style belies prodigious chops. His between-song patter also shows him to have all of the qualities of a well-informed host who also knows how to tell a short and funny anecdote or two. Originals by both Pizzarelli and Kennedy add further diversity to a memorable night. Read more

this has got to be my favourite album, great arrangements and very entertaining. This is one of the best trios around,Ray Kennedy is an astounding piano player, and Martin Pizzarelli is one of the most solid bass players around. Please someone tell me why John Pizzarelli isn`t a household name, he`s a rare talent. J.P swings through an assortment of standards plus his own compositions i.e the ballad "better run before it`s spring" and the "polliwog song".Both these songs are delightful and beautifully played.John`s vocals and jazz guitar are superb throughout this double album.Buy at least two albums just in case you wear one out with continuous use.

5-0 out of 5 stars whats not to like?
this cd contains terrific live versions of past "hits" of this tremendous trio(oh, how my heart beats for you, three little words) and new arrangements i had never heard before(a touching "Manhattan", isn't it a pity and just you, just me). it is full of spontanaiety , humor and musicianship. these are NOT rehashes of previous cd's. they are to me what this trio is all about live. a must have!

2-0 out of 5 stars If you've ever seen him live, don't bother with this cd
It's a fine cd if you've never seen John Pizzarelli live. But if you have, there's no reason to bother with this.Half the songs are the same ones he was doing live 5 years ago.The best song on the cd, I Like Jersey Best, is an exact duplicate of the arrangement on PS Mr. Cole. There's just too many other excellent cd's out there to invest in this one.As far as this cd goes, he's done it all before. Many times. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Foray into Bluegrass
Fred's foray into bluegrass is a success.Arrangements and recording are raw, but worth a listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars The weather's been hard, the hay is almost in...
Fred reminds me of my childhood on the southside of Dublin, TX.We had a lot of nothing to live on...I am doing well now as an adult, but Fred brings where I came from back to the forefront of my mind. Its like home is here.
2-0 out of 5 stars Only if you're a fan of bluegrass and roots music
I LOVE Fred.I think his live album "Ralph's Last Show" is one of my favorite albums and I play it constantly.Trying to build my collection of Fred's music I bought this one.Read more

A very well compiled & presented edition.Cost was most reasonable
1-0 out of 5 stars So disappointed
I had such high hopes and really wanted this to be good when I read all of these great reviews.Bottom line - it is horrible. In so many songs, Neil Diamond sounds out of breath and muffled. The production is poor.I can't believe I paid so much money for it.I bought it mostly because of the great reviews here and I sincerely wish I had not.Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most amazing cd/dvd box ever made
my god, this is sooooo good that no words can match the quality, intensity, joy, beauty and content of this box set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Optimum girl group
The Toys are a girl group that made only one album, but what an album it is! All the songs are written by Linzer and Randell, and it's as though they prepped for the project by ingesting all the great music of the era. There are hints of Motown, classic girl group, guitar pop, Frankie Valli, and Ray Charles in the writing and arranging. The material is strong from get to go, and the groups vocals are exquisite, making this my favorite single-artist (i.e. not a compilation of different groups singles) girl-group album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Body and Soul
We were watching "It's a Bikini World" (1966) on TV, truly one of the 1960s most inspired and subversive youth films.Stephanie Rothman directed a cheapo cast including Bobby Pickett, Tommy Kirk (in two roles, hip and square) and the one and only Deborah Walley, and in true BEACH PARTY fashion the film manages to incorporate many great pop acts of the day. This one has Eric Burdon singing "We've Got to Get Out of This Place," the Castaways with their catchy "Liar Liar" number, and many more, a few of which have cerainly not stood the test of time, yet such is the energy of "It's a Bikini World" that viewers forgive all sins.Anyhow the Toys appeared and my heart went right out the window.I had almost forgotten about them, but when they sang their second hit "Attack" in the film a whole era came back. The lead singer Barbara Harris is, to make a long story short, among the half dozen most distinctive voices of the century.
4-0 out of 5 stars How the Girls from the Carolinas became immortal.
You know you've heard it. It starts "How gentle is the rain that fa-alls softly on the me-hed-ows.." to the tune of Bach's Minuet in G...evvy schoolkid's basic piano lesson. Two of the three ladies were originally from North Carolina, the third was found in high school inJamaica, NY...they got together and did the corner vocals and talent showthing til one day they gathered enuff snuff to strut inta the famous BrillBuilding, the assembly line factory for many a famous songwriters, producers, teenage acts, etc. Essentially it is where Goffin met King andthey wrote tunes for the Sherelles, the Chiffons, et al--songwriters likeLieber/Stoller and producers like Phil Spector marketed teenaged angst onvinyl 45s....Anyway, they somehow got with Bob Crewe and "Working MyWay Back To You" writers Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell and licketysplit, they came up with "A Lovers Concerto", their biggest hit. But, they did a lot of other jams, too--one, "Can't Get Enough Of YouBaby", wound up first on Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' original"Working My Way Back To You" LP, and here in recent times it hasbeen done by the neo-alternatives Smash Mouth. "Attack" and"May Your Heart Be Cast Unto Stone" were minor hits with thatsame bouncy pop production. They are aged well with time. Innocent but notinsulting...And I remember "See How They Run" as a localfavorite....this is a truly rare and classix album. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "It Must Have Been Love" is worth the purchase price.
The extended Neil Young style rendition of It Must Have Been Love totally blew me away.I remember hearing this song so much back when it was a hit that I got tired of it and it never was one of my favorite songs. Also, the live rockin' version of "The Look" is great crank-it-up fun too. Talk about bang-for-the-buck!Literally if you buy it used!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all Roxette fans
This one is true blue Roxette albums with their signature style all over it. Calling them classic pop of the 90s would be unfair since their songs are timeless! The live songs are the ones to watch for. It makes you feel as though you were there with them on the stage. All in all a fantastic album and a must have for all Roxette fans!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Comparison with the earlier version of Hot August Night
This album reveals an older, raspier Neil Diamond.Still it's the same vigorous performance and we still find it stimulating enough to cause us to dance around the room!

2-0 out of 5 stars Changing times
Hot August Night II is the start of the decline of the crooner and the beginer of the talker/screamer in Neil Diamond. Sometime in the late 80's he stopped singing most of his songs and started to talk or yell the most important lyrics. It was like he last all tone and rythm. I grew up being rocked to sleep as a young child to the original Hot August Night, but this album still gives me nightmares. Every couple of years I put in in the CD player just to give it another try and it always goes back on the shelf, replaced by the original. This album includes his great late 70's/early 80's songs, but they are butchered, much like his other classics. Having seen him in concert no less than 10 times, each live show is so different, sometimes smooth and classy, other times like this album indifferent, out of tune and careless. It just give rise to the question did the age, number of live shows catch up with him in the 80's?

1-0 out of 5 stars I love you Neil, But...
this was awful. The acoustics were terrible, the band was below average and Neil Diamond ended up screaming most of the words to his songs.Even a haunting, beautiful melody like "Love on the Rocks" was tortured by Diamond and the band.It seemed like this was an excuse to have a sequel to "Hot August Night" (which was superb), but it fell flat.If you are a Neil Diamond fan you will be disappointed. I know I was. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPER WONDER
Lo voy a decir en pocas palabras que entender cualquiera que hable espaol: no es una broma, Wonder es el msico negro con ms "visin" en las ltimas dcadas y no tener este lbum en vivo es privarse de un trabajo impecable.

5-0 out of 5 stars SHOULD HAVE BEEN A GRAMMY-WINNING SMASH!!
Why this album wasn't a major, major hit for Stevie Wonder just
