5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums
Verysimply, this is one of my favorite albums. Despite the 1-star review below complaining about Crosby's "gruffness", I feel his singing here is easily as good as it ever was; and that is perfection. The old tunes are different enough from the original recordings to be enjoyed all over again, and new track "Rusty and Blue" is great. Crosby is a unique pop artist, and there is an authenticity and intelligence about his work that I feel myself particularly drawn to, never more than here.

5-0 out of 5 stars a real diamond
This is a fantastic live recording, one of the best I have heard in years.David Crosby assembled an exceptional group of musicians, especially the lead guitar, keyboard player, bass player and as always great lead vocals from David. There is a nice mix of old and new tunes.Good vocals on several songs from
5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice live recording
I have no clue what is wrong with the reviewer who gave this 1 star. They obviously need their ears checked for signs of deafness. Great guitar work from Jeff Pevar and David's vocals sound just as good as when he was 20 years younger. Surprise guests include Chris Robinson and Graham Nash! I put this entire CD on my iPod and have listened to it many times over.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fans can never be objective...
From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...Elton and "live" have never gone well together, but surprisingly this is his best live CD because it has a polish others lack. And when you have the power vocals of Anastacia thrown in it shows that the right vocals make a great Elton song.

3-0 out of 5 stars Elton does a great job - but this could be so much more...
Elton John has certainly cemented his place in the history of music. He is a legendary performer who has rode a wave of success unlike any artist.Elton John first came on the music scene in 1969. Once his 1970 hit "Your Song" of his self-titled "Elton John" (his second) album was released, it would begin one of the most consistent music careers in the history of music. In fact, from 1969 until 1991 - there wasn't a calendar year that passed without the release of some sort of Elton John album.Even after that, Elton would only miss 2 calendar years without a release between 1991 and 2004 (those years being 1998 and 2003).With the exception of a slight downward spiral in the late 1970s, Elton would also consistently become a "hit" machine. While Elton has released several live compilations throughout his career, this collection "Elton John - One Night Only Greatest Hits" is the only one that provides a good cross section from Elton's early 1970s work through his work in the 1990s. "One Night Only" does deliver some very good Elton John live performances, but it is not without it's flaws.
2-0 out of 5 stars WHERE IS THE REAL ELTON??
Although there is a bunch of great Elton's early classics and also the sound of the band is really big, Elton's voice is depressing!! Even his outfits do not remember the great 70's and early 80's Elton John's, I mean the personality that he used to transmit on stage. That hairstyle he's wearing is ridiculous!! But the mean problem is about his voice. Elton has better live albums, such as "Here and There" or "17-11-70". Sorry, for me this one can go directly to the trash can. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I would give ZERO stars if there was that rating!!!
Some of the other reviewers have left out songs that was omitted in the recording, the concise list of songs that wasn't in the recording is below:
4-0 out of 5 stars A tremendous recording with one major exception
I have to say the mounting of this show alone was fantastic.Broadway divas from past to present sing their famous/ favorite tunes. All the ladies turn in a brilliant performance.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's All About Linda Eder (but the rest rock too)
When I saw this performance on KCET, I was blown away!Such amazing talent all brought into one performance is amazing. So the next time it was on TV, I taped it and I've watched it several times.Still realizingthat wasn't enough, I bought the CD, and it keeps amazing me every time Ilisten to it.Although I wish that all of the songs from the show were onit, they have most of my famorites.Linda Eder obviously stole the show, but Jennifer Holliday, among others, came close. What a tremendousaddition to my musical theatre collection! I would recomend it foranyone who likes modern female musical theatre vocalists. Noah (17) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sad Reminder Of What Elvis Had Been
This album is not the legacy that Elvis would have wanted to leave for his fans. By all accounts of the Memphis Mafia, by 1974 it was all over. Elvis' performances became erratic and uneven, leaving many fans wondering what was happening. There were still some good performances, but the Elvis of 1969 through 1972 was gone forever. Even though Elvis was in fine voice for the Aloha Special, his stage presence was compromised. When you compare Elvis on Tour with the Aloha performance, the difference in Elvis is a blinding contrast.
3-0 out of 5 stars He's my #1 singer of all time.
In 1977, Colonel Parker negotiated a new television deal for an Elvis concert to be broadcast. The June 19 and June 21 concerts were filmed.Elvis historian Ernst Jorgensen describes the first show as "a disaster" and the second show as "barely good enough".The show was broadcast two months after Elvis died, but will most likely never be seen again, due to how bad Elvis looked (obese, bloated, pale, sweaty).Producer Felton Jarvis was given the unenviable task of assembling a soundtrack to the TV special. Some fan comments from the special are included on the album, and some of these people are delusional (one woman describes the poor shell of the King as "the best looking guy in the world".)Jarvis did what he could to present an album that wouldn't be an embarrassment to the King's memory, overdubbing voices and instruments onto the songs to give them a fuller sound.Elvis himself clearly wasn't at his best at this point. His voice isn't as strong as it once was, he sometimes gets distracted, he forgets lyrics, he mumbles and he slurs his words. But he does show a bit of life on a few numbers, like "How Great Thou Art", "Hurt" and "My Way" (even though he can't remember the lyrics to that song and has to read them off of a piece of paper). The album also includes a "special message from Elvis' father", thanking everyone for the condolence letters. This is far from the best Elvis live album available, but it is an interesting document of the King in decline.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still Great despite his condition
I'm too young to remember Elvis but buying this CD turned out to be a good choice. Sure he was not in good shape by June 1977, but at least he had his voice. His takes of "You Gave Me A Mountain", "My Way", and "How Great Thou Art" are really superb. This is a great album to get and what a way to see or hear how he sounded before his death in August 1977. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best live performance LPs I've heard
Until I saw Don McLean in concert a few years ago, I didn't know a whole lot about him. Many years earlier (back in my high school days), I owned one of his albums, "Don McLean," the one with Dreidel on it, and I also had the 7" 45 RPM of "American Pie", but prior to the concert I hadn't thought of him in years.
5-0 out of 5 stars An old friend from the past.
I picked this release up in college in an old dinghy used-LP store. The best damn used LP(vinyl, for the uninitiated) I could ever find.5-0 out of 5 stars New release plays on CD-Rom drives
Just wanted to respond to an earlier review that warned me that the CDs wouldn't play on my computer. The CD seemed to go out of print for about 3 months (that's how long I had to wait for it to come back into stock) and the CDs I got play just fine on my computer.Presumably ripping to mp3 would also be possible.Read more

Given his early roots in Irish show bands steeped in American R&B, Van Morrison's power as a live performer is as riveting in his "on" nights as it can be frustrating when he's not in the mood. But his sheer power as a singer, and his long tradition of crack bands, has translated to an awful lot of good nights--enough to spawn three compelling live albums, of which this is the first and best. Recorded during his San Franciscan residency of the early '70s, with his ambitious Caledonia Soul Orchestra, this double album documents Morrison at an early vocal peak and benefits from a set list culled from his early solo masterpieces, including Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Live album - Second to none
Van on a bad night is better than 99% of the performers out there today. This is not a bad night. This is what a live album is meant to be. But first, most performers don't have the voice Van has to pull this off.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peerless
Let me get it out now, I consider this the GREATEST LIVE ALBUM OF ALL TIME. Over the past 32 years I have worn out two vinyl versions and am on my third year in CD.This collection of Van's best music(it is the best of three nights in three different venues)captures one of the original geniuses of modern music at his absolute peak.Totally original yet completely accessible,Van brings blues, rock, folk, gospel, pop and soul together to the delight of a frenzied audience.Having seen him three times I know how rare this is.
5-0 out of 5 stars Van at his best!

Editorial Review

Much has been made of Billy Joel's plans to ditch his career as a rock & roller and age gracefully into the supposedly sanguine world of classical music. Maybe it's the right thing to do if, as it seems, he's run out of gas as a pop songwriter. Recent years have seen no new material, only box sets and reissues of his old albums. Now comes the capper, a live album from his Millennium Concert recorded at New York's Madison Square Garden on New Year's Eve. Certainly there's still some mileage left in Joel's catalog, particularly ballads like "Summer Highland Falls" and "I've Loved These Days," and, considering the nexus of the occasion and Joel's career plans, his version of "My Life." And he also turns in sharp performances of signature pieces like "Angry Young Man," "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," and "You May Be Right." But his between-song patter may grow tiresome over repeated listenings. Joel is known to be pretty full of himself, but after hearing him rattle on about high ticket prices and his classical ambitions, you may have had your fill of him, too. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother! Save your money for the 12 Gardens CD
As much as it pains me to say it this live cd is not a worthy billy joel release. In fact one wonders why it was released at all. Billy's voice is strained and is prone to over singing and the arrangements are overblown. From the sound of things Billy sounds like he was drunk or on medication. A lot of the running time is waisted with lengthy monologues with the audience. Why this was put on the CD is anyones guess but it just neans less songs!
2-0 out of 5 stars Rocking and rolling from the rocking chair
Billy Joel's career was built around an image of himself as the "young rebel" fighting against traditional American prejudices and bringing in the ideas of the "young".
4-0 out of 5 stars Columbia needs to put some time and effort into Joel's live CD and DVD repertoire.
My excitement is building into overflow territory for the June 13th release of "12 Gardens," Billy's new live album of performances culled from his recent record-breaking run of 12 sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden.

4-0 out of 5 stars Diamond Is Forever.
I'm a new-ish Neil Diamond fan.I went to see him on his recent tour, and it was fantastic.'Live In America,' although recorded over 10 years prior to me seeing him, somehow recaptures how great the show was.I am a big fan of live albums, and this is one of my favorites (and my record collection is pretty big).
5-0 out of 5 stars Neil Diamond is a national treasure!
This is the greatest version of "Holly Holy" I have heard yet!"America" WOW--It gives me chills!Lost on an island with just one cd forever...this is truly the one!And another hard to find favorite "And the grass won't pay no mind", it's on here, and it's really beautiful. Neil Diamond is the man! Theres my Dad, Jesus, and Neil Diamond :o)

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but Flawed Document of a Great Tour
I saw Neil Diamond for the first time on the final night of his Lovescape Tour at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY on June 19, 1993.Neil played "in the round" for this tour.I was a college student at the time and I attended the show with my brother and eight college friends.I've seen well over 100 rock concerts over the past 15 years or so and that show still stands out as one of my favorites.Neil is the consumate showman and his live show boasts the exuberance of a revival.

Editorial Review

On a cool February night in 1971, entertainer Bobby Darin gathered the friends, associates, and VIPs he'd flown in for the occasion to a sort of summit meeting in the Crystal Room of Las Vegas' Desert Inn. There and then, Darin again staked his claim as one of the most accomplished, versatile, and creatively unpredictable pop singers ever. Despite having traded his early teen idol incarnation for that of mature and ambitious saloon singer a decade earlier, Darin displays his uncanny knack for recasting contemporary rock and pop in his own image repeatedly here. The show may feature a loose, swinging rendition of "Mack the Knife" near the top of the set, and close with the spare, jazzy bonus version of "Beyond the Sea," but they bookend masterful takes on everything from James Taylor (a blues-charged "Fire and Rain") and BS&T's "Hi De Ho" to the Beatles (a medley of "Hey Jude"/"Eleanor Rigby"/"Blackbird"/"A Day in the Life" whose drama shames most contemporary pop covers) and a warm, elegant version of Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight." His hit version of Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter" is shrewdly paired here with the poignant, Darin-penned anti-war anthem "Sing a Simple Song of Freedom" (which Hardin covered successfully), underscoring the willful genre-bending that made Darin so intriguing. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but not Darin at h is best!
I recently purchased this CD, Bobby Darin Live At The Desert Inn. I love the CD but it is not currently my favorite out of all my Bobby Darin CDs. This is though my favorite out of his more mature performances. Dispite Darin's horrible heart condition during this performance, he deleivered an exceptional performace. 4 out of 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A review for the reviewers
After reading the reviews on this CD, I purchased it. My goodness, how much more I enjoyed each track after reading the descriptions of the songs. I don't know how you all know these stories, but THANK YOU for sharing them.My parents were musicians in an orchestra and when I started piano lessons, the first song I learned was "Mack the Knife".I was a little young when Bobby Darin passed away and am just now becoming acquainted with his music. This CD is so fun to listen to in the car, all alone. I love his banter...you feel like you're there. I first went to Las Vegas in 1974 when it was just a big town. The fun part after watching headliners, was to go sit in the lounge of whatever casino they were performing, and they would come out and sit and have a few drinks, often times right next to you. I did see Frank & Dean perform...never saw Bobby. Thanks again reviewers...

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the great live albums from the greatest entertainer.
I love this album, and it stands on it's own as a quality recording by a wonderful performer regardless of his physical condition. But I do have to second Barry Pasini's remarks that take issue with Lawrence's statement that Bobby's voice was past its prime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Les Miz Recording Out There
Now don't you disregard this because it says I'm a kid. I am very experienced in theatre and know exactly what I am talking about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great that Ruffelle wasn't around to ruin this recording!
The TAC version is undoubtedly the best Les Miserables recording available! It's live, the orchestra is full, and best of all, the casting is great. It's a great relief that the production hired Miss Saigon's Salonga to do Eponine -- we have FINALLY have someone who not only emotes Eponine well, but can actually sing her lines -- the first two recordings (London and Broadway) treated us to a poor excuse of a musical theater actor who couldn't deliver lines clearly and who could barely stay in tune. Salonga, along with the other actors here, shows what the term Dream Cast means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Les Mis is Les Magnifique
I encountered Les Miserables through this particular performance. I bought the movie with the live performance and at first thought ewwwww. I was not big into musicals and my closest things to musical knowledge was listening to Phantom of the Opera and Jekyll And Hyde. Of course I bought the DVD of (David)Hasselhoff's performance. Point being, this version of Les Miserables changed my outlook on musicals.

5-0 out of 5 stars IM IN LOVE!!!!!
I bought this CD after falling in love with his voice form Les Miz... and I can't get enough of it! He really put his all into this concert. Every song is perfectly written and perfectly sung. I woulrd recommend this CD in a heartbeat, especially for all of those broadway fans out there. The ONLY problem is, that I wasn't there to experience the concert myself. PLEASE COME TO THE U.S.!

5-0 out of 5 stars The reason I gave it 5 stars was . . .
One word:Gethsemane (from Jesus Christ Superstar). That one song is worth the price of the CD now as it was in 1999.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!!
I couldn't resist purchasing one of Michael's albums upon seeing it the store instead of ordering it from a store in the UK as I had to do several years ago.It was hard to decide among the few that were in stock. The reasons I chose this album: to hear him live, the excellent mix of his old classics and new songs, and to pretend I actually get to see him live. His voice has grown beautifully, making his old songs like "One Step Out of Time" and "Love Changes Everything" sound new.One can really hear his range on this album with the different genres of music from show tunes to rock & roll.It was a very nice surprise to hear him perform his first written song, "Someone Else's Dream", which was really good.I highly recommend this album, you won't be disappointed. My only disappointment is that I have yet to see him perform live. ... To say that Springsteen's live shows with the E Street Band were legendary is the height of understatement. 5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Sprinsteen Live 1975-85
What a delight to hear Bruce from the early days. His interaction with the audience and storytelling make this a fantastic music experience and one any fan of Bruce will enjoy. Bring on the next 20+ years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce at his best
I only wish that I could give this CD set the ten stars it deserves. Initially, one might flinch at the price, but it is well worth it. Bruce delivers each song with heartfelt urgency--you feel the energy as if you're actually there in the crowd, and the dialogue between songs is fantastic. (Try not to cry at the story he tells about his relationship with his father on the lead-in to "The River.")
5-0 out of 5 stars Because the Night
Great song. I love Patti Smith's version but this one's even better. That song alone is worth however much you pay for this album. Plus you get other rare gems (and great Bruce songs) such as Fire, Seeds and Paradise by the "C" (great title!), not to mention killer versions of Bruce classics such as Rosalita, Born to Run, Thunder Road, Badlands, Darkness on the Edge of Town, The River, Independence Day, etc. Whether you're a completist or a huge fan of The Boss (I fall in the latter camp), you really should pick this up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Memory Lane
I had not heard the album for many years and it has not lost any of it's vibrance. Like all live recordings it has flaws but they are more than compensated for by the fact that it is live.
5-0 out of 5 stars 50 Billion Stars Actually
This is John Stewart's definitive work. Stewart is one of the rare artists who is better live than in the studio (and that's no knock against his excellent studio work). Standout tracks include Wheatfield Lady, Kansas, Runaway Fool of Love, July, You're a Woman (not July, You're Just a Woman, get your facts straight Amazon.com!), and The Last Campaign Trilogy. I'm leaving out many, many other tracks however, the entire CD is great. Everyone should go buy it. Yes. Go buy it now.

Editorial Review

Russ Freeman has written some of smooth jazz's more enduring melodies for his Rippingtons. Years ago, however, the band had little identity live, and their leader rarely strayed far from recorded versions. Through persistent touring, Freeman has become a confident performer and improviser, and has built his band into something to see and hear. On this high-octane release, the group demonstrates why every summer they are now one of the top-drawing acts in smooth jazz. This is a feel-good summertime kind of record that not only highlights Freeman's compositional prowess on smooth-jazz chestnuts like "Welcome to the St. James Club" and the classic "She Likes to Watch," from the very first Rippingtons album, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Instrumental Pop Disc
This is a real nice collection of Instrumental Pop Classics showcased by the legendary Rippingtons.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Rippingtons ~ [Rippin'] Live Across America!
I have listened to many traditional and contemporary jazz artists, but none inspire me like The Rippingtons.
4-0 out of 5 stars A review of The Rippingtons Live Across America.
Live Across America is a pretty good live album by The Rippingtons. It was released in 2002. It's a pretty recent record. Most of the songs on here are good. However, a couple can be a bit too lengthy. Jewel Thieves is the exception. The cd cover is cool/interesting, as is every album produced by The Rippingtons.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VIKKICARRCONCERTCLASSIC~BRAVO!!!
Vikki Carr possesses one of the finest voices in Popular Music history but sadly has not been given her just due by the music industry in her own country.Vikki Carr became the LegendarySuperstar that her talent warrants with the release of her superb Spanish albums which are all sung with breathtaking vocal beauty and deeply felt passionate emotion. From the early sixties through the seventies Vikki recorded many classic LP's in English but it was her Spanish albums that gave her the acclaim she richly deserves."It Must Be Him" was the lone token English mega-hit exception and this soulful live version from the Greek Theatre concert is a winner.Even though radio was not playing Vikki Carr records because she wasn't a singer/songwriter, (that tired 70's formula was a requirement for some goofy reason in this bleak musical era until Disco came along and then music plunged artistly to even deeper depths and we won't even mention the current sad state of the music world!) Vikki Carr concerts continued to be sold-out events that drew numerous standing ovations for her wonderful performing and great singing. This beautifully remastered 2CD set of "Live At The Greek Theatre" is a treasure chest of wonderful performances and it is great to experience this brilliant velvety soulful voice over and over again in a diverse program of great songs sung to absolute perfection!"Love Song" weaves through this gorgeous set of songs about love sung with vocal beauty and deeply passionate emotion that is unsurpassed.A soulfully sung "Spanish Medley" shows this fiery DIVA at her best and the superb "Judy Garland Medley" is brilliant and would make Judy Garland smile down with approval and anyone who appreciates the best in great singers will not want to miss this extraordinary concert! This is the Art Of Singing at its finest and Vikki Carr is still performing in peak form in concert and not to be missed as she is one of the all time greatest...thank youVIKKI CARR!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Live Recording
Vikki Carr's interpretation of "With Pen In Hand" is different in every recording. While the one in this album is perfectly nice and sentimental, if you like this song, you should also get the CD titled "It Must Be Him/For Once in My Life" featuring another version of the song she performed live in New York.

5-0 out of 5 stars I know what it is!
The lyric should read "Without any thorns the rose can't be sweet" instead. The song is "The Lesson" first released in 10/1967 on a Liberty single. The 2002 CD release of "It Must Be Him / For Once in My Life" (Collectables) also features this song as a bonus. ... Read more
