Editorial Review

This two-CD, 25-song set, recorded in Louisville on two nights in the spring of 2002, finds bluegrass's most celebrated crossover band at the top of its game. Krauss's warm, feathery vocals, capable of conveying complex emotions in a single note, appear more full-bodied than in studio recordings, yet lose none of their sensual appeal or dramatic tension. She's perfect, for example, as the melancholy temptress on "Let Me Touch You for Awhile," coming across as both savior and seductress, while Jerry Douglas's Dobro echoes the searing strains of passion and pain. With banjoist-guitarist Ron Block, bassist Barry Bales, and guest drummer Larry Atamanuik anchoring the rhythm, the ensemble deftly blends bluegrass with jazz, rock, and folk, combining lightning speed (though rushing through "Forget About It") with sophisticated chops, tangible emotion, and thrilling vocal blends. The crowd, more spellbound with every note, doesn't even breathe on "Ghost in This House" and nearly tears the place down on Dan Tyminski's voice-of-George Clooney showcase, "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow." But who could blame them? It's only one highlight on an album of uncommon artistry, a moving testament to how good live music can be in the hands of world-class players. Read more

I'm 53 years old and appreciate all kinds of good music. This is my favorite album, period. And this live verison of Forget About It is my favorite single track of all time. This group proves in a live performance that they are the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
For any country-music-lover out there this is a must have album. Full-packed with great songs, and they play them so well live so you barely notice any difference with the studio tracks on other cds. Hard to say any particular best song on this there are many great songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!
I never got into bluegrass, untill I bought this for my wife as a gift. I figured she would be the only one to watch it. WRONG this DVD is awesome we are both hooked and have been buying AKUS stuff every chance we get. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Watch the movie...then listen to the music!
I remember when the movie premeired in the 70's with Kris and Barbra. The soundtrack has some great cuts on it but, to get the most of of your listening pleasure, I reccomend watching the movie first. Otherwise some of the cuts seem out of place in this complilation of songs. I've ordered the movie but it hasn't been released yet. I can't wait to see it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great album title by Barbra Streisand!!!
This album by Barbra Streisand, which is a companion title to the movie of the same name from 1976, is one of her best selling titles ever. It contains 11 songs, 6 of which contain Barbra's beautiful singing voice (including the timeless "Evergreen"), 3 of them have Kris Kristofferson's vocals, and 2 have Barbra and Kris singing together. This was and still is a great movie and this album was a hot seller when it was first released in late '76 and was at the top of the charts for quite a long time. The music on this album is wonderful. I mainly prefer Barbra's songs on this title more than Kris' songs. His material on this was okay; his performance was not too bad in the movie. I am not very familiar with any of Kris' other material that he did during his singing career before or after doing the movie. Anyway, I love this album (and the movie, too). I am looking forward to getting the movie on DVD sometime soon. I don't quite understand why the movie wasn't available on DVD before, but Barbra's fans will be looking forward to getting it soon. I have this album on LP (3 copies, believe it or not) and on CD. No Barbra Streisand music collection is complete without this title. Get it while you can!!! Now, I am going to give a brief summary of each of the eleven songs on this album:

Editorial Review

Ravi Shankar planted the seed, but it was George Harrison who turned this historic benefit concert into reality. The publicity-shy former Beatle could've easily written a check and forgotten all about the matter--impoverished East Pakistani refugees stranded in India--but instead recruited some of his most talented and compassionate friends and created an event remembered as much for the quality of its music as the purity of its intent. (The two-part engagement itself raised $250,000.) The players include Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, and Bob Dylan, while the backing band includes Jim Keltner, Klaus Voormann, and the up-and-coming Apple band Badfinger (Phil Spector and Harrison produced). The concert took place on August 1, 1971 at Madison Square Garden and was released as a triple-album boxed set that December and a feature film in 1972. That year, it won the Grammy for best album. The program begins with Shankar and his trio ("Bangla Dhun") and ends with a song Harrison wrote for the occasion ("Bangla Desh"). Highlights include Billy Preston's rousing "That's the Way God Planned It" and Dylan's heartfelt five-song set, starting with "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." The remaster adds an additional Dylan track, "Love Minus Zero/No Limit," from the afternoon show. Although the cover art has been changed to a picture of Harrison, the original iconic image of a sad-eyed child remains prominent in the CD and DVD packaging. As with previous versions of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bunch of Music Stars Get Together to Do Something Good
"The Concert for Bangladesh" is the live CD from a famous and important 1971 concert led by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar. It was a fundraising effort for the incredibly suffering poor country of Bangladesh. Among the stars who showed up to perform in Madison Square Garden on August 1, 1971 for the concert were Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, and Leon Russel.
5-0 out of 5 stars Suggestions for a one-disc "highlights" version
Don't get me wrong. I love "The Concert for Bangladesh." However, a single disc version would be nice. Here is how I see it:
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS CD IS WORTH THE COST JUST TO HAVE THE 6 DYLAN TUNES
Sitting in the movie theatre many years ago, glued to every note that Dylan sung. What an spellbinding performance! Seemingly so simple, yet so timeless. As I listen to them all these years later, these 6 numbers are what make this album worth all of the other songs. Masterful performance by Mr. Dylan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Buy It!
More than 30 years later still simply the best rocking live record I ever heard!

5-0 out of 5 stars Geils' First Live Album Is Great
FULL HOUSE, The J. Geils Band's first live album, is great. It shows a band fully aware of the Memphis-Chicago-Muscle Shoals-St. Louis-New York-Detroit-New Orleans-Kansas City blues/R&B/soul/rock & roll traditions, and adds a sense of humor through lead singer Peter Wolf's onstage raps. BLOW YOUR FACE OUT is slightly better, but anyone who loves J. Geils must own this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Price worth it just for Whammer Jammer
Too bad the release doesn't have more songs on it from the concert.Geils and Wolf at their best, this release rocks with energy from start to finish."Whammer Jammer" alone is worth picking up the cd and I love how the end of the song blends right into "Hard Driving Man". ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Low energy.
Being a huge fan of J. Geils' "Full House," I was encouraged by some reviews here to believe that "Blow Your Face Out" was a similar live effort. But the only similarity is that they were both recorded live. "Blow Your Face Out" is funky and laid back. Not bad, if that's what you want. But anyone expecting something along the lines of Full House will be tremendously disappointed. In fact, "Lookin' For Love," which will knock your socks off on "Full House," is done as a slow, elavator Muzac tune in "Blow Your Face Out." Why did they even bother?
5-0 out of 5 stars This J. Geils Band Live Album Is Even Better Than FULL HOUSE
BLOW YOUR FACE OUT, The J. Geils Band's second live album, is even better than FULL HOUSE. The band has managed to take the Memphis-Chicago-Muscle Shoals-St. Louis-New Orleans-Detroit-New York-Kansas City blues/R&B/soul/rock & roll traditions to the next level by including more originals this time out, and moreover, Peter Wolf's onstage raps have improved immensely since the last album. Any serious rock fan must own this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars this is a killer live album
i got it at used record shop. before that, i'd only heard the 'freeze frame' era j geils. 'Where did our love go' blows away both the supremes and soft cell's (possibly the baddest live rendition of the tune anywhere). 'lookin for a love' sounds different than the studio version i heard later but there isn't a bad tune on here. these guys rocked out similar to the stones et al. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Les Miz Recording Out There
Now don't you disregard this because it says I'm a kid. I am very experienced in theatre and know exactly what I am talking about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great that Ruffelle wasn't around to ruin this recording!
The TAC version is undoubtedly the best Les Miserables recording available! It's live, the orchestra is full, and best of all, the casting is great. It's a great relief that the production hired Miss Saigon's Salonga to do Eponine -- we have FINALLY have someone who not only emotes Eponine well, but can actually sing her lines -- the first two recordings (London and Broadway) treated us to a poor excuse of a musical theater actor who couldn't deliver lines clearly and who could barely stay in tune. Salonga, along with the other actors here, shows what the term Dream Cast means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Les Mis is Les Magnifique
I encountered Les Miserables through this particular performance. I bought the movie with the live performance and at first thought ewwwww. I was not big into musicals and my closest things to musical knowledge was listening to Phantom of the Opera and Jekyll And Hyde. Of course I bought the DVD of (David)Hasselhoff's performance. Point being, this version of Les Miserables changed my outlook on musicals.

Editorial Review

The band's goofy charm and sure-footed melodic sense is in full flower here, and the singalongs on "Brian Wilson" and "If I Had $1000000" are proof of the bond between band and audience. A hidden rap tribute to Ed Robertson's "Uncle Elwyn" is vintage Bill Cosby. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Being Naked Live Ain't Embarassing
Here is a live record containing a band that sounds as good live as they do in the studio. In the Spring of 1996, The Barenaked Ladies performed amazing rock sets at both the Rivera in Chicago and The Oympia in Montreal. With a group trained on the double bass, bass guitar, keyboards, accordian, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, drums, and vocals; it is pretty obvious that the Barenaked Ladies' music is very musical and unique. Their songs are a light rock, very poppish, but ear catching. Some of them are even given a Swing feel and beat. This album is a must have for any fan and for anyone who enjoys listening to music. Enhanced CD features include footage of skits and and live performances.
5-0 out of 5 stars Energized
So many live albums can be "flat".You can't go back and redo anything and if the crowd has an off night or isn't into your show, you can't go back to the studio and re-record cheers or fill in the "other" instrument (the audience).
5-0 out of 5 stars Why aren't they on the NOW CDs?
This is an incredible live album. I honestly don't think that I've ever heard anyone do a better job on a live album. Standout songs are Brian Wilson, When I Fall, Straw Hat And Old Dirty Hank, and If I Had A Million Dollars. How come these guys are never on the NOW CDs? They're more talented than Nelly or Snoop Dogg or Coldplay! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Music Lives but the Acoustic ROCKS!!!
This is a great album, don't get me wrong! However, I don't think it's as good as their acoustic concert.I purchased "Underneath Acoustic" before "Live & Electric" and was amazed by their mature harmonious sound in the acoustic concert, having not heard any of their music since "This Time Around" album. The "Live & Electric" concert wasn't as clear and concise and actually left me a little disappointed. My 5 year old son and myself love "Penny & Me" and couldn't wait to play it, but after hearing it, went back to the acoustic version.I don't know, maybe in my middle age I prefer their softer sound!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Mature and Marvelous!
From MMMMBop to Penny & me,Hanson has grown up well! The songs are lively, poignant and beautiful, and show the maturity of these boys...now men. I am most impressed to find that they write their own music, play the instruments and do not rely on others to make the sound for them. I happen to think that they got labeled "Boyband" from their MMMBop days, and are not being given a fair shake as serious musicians.I am in my late 30's and very much enjoy the harmonious trio. I find the songs catchy, upbeat and full of decent, uplifting, unprofane lyrics...stuff you can actually sing to!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Hansons rock!
On this sequel to 1998's LIVE FROM ALBERTANE,Clarke Isaac,Jordan Taylor and Zachary Walker Hanson give their fans 15 of their most popular and best-loved tunes of all time. Are they still wooing their female fans? My answer is "Yes,they are.". On this album, the three brothers are pleasing their Aussie fans(it was recorded in Melbourne,Australia) with MIDDLE OF NOWHERE tracks such as WHERE'S THE LOVE?,I WILL COME TO YOU,LOOK AT YOU and MMMBOP. On the brothers' first live album recorded in July 1998,they were still promoting MON,14 months after that release(and it was still on the pop/rock charts). I notice no key change on IWCTY unlike the MON studio track and the live track on LFA. Even the other tracks were performed in different keys than heard on the other albums. From 2000's THIS TIME AROUND are the title track,A SONG TO SING and IF ONLY. Last year, when the brothers were still promoting the April 2004 release of UNDERNEATH for this album, they also kicked butt on STRONG ENOUGH TO BREAK and PENNY & ME. ROCK AND ROLL RAZORBLADE really kicks butt. This album could have used the Crosby,Stills & Nash 1970 hit TEACH YOUR CHILDREN WELL as heard on the UNDERNEATH-ACOUSTIC LIVE DVD. But the DVD was a separate performance from November 2003. The Barry,Robin and Maurice Gibb of Tulsa,Oklahoma will be eligible for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2022. The Hansons are potential legends already. So they're no longer teen idols,so what? You can't be a teen idol forever. The brothers are all men now. CIH is now aged 25,JTH is 23 and ZWH will turn 21 in September. Hey,girls and women will always love these guys. The brothers have plenty of male fans also. Keep up the great music, guys! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Every Career Should End Like This
I look at Harrison's Live In Japan as more than a collection of music played live.Taken with "Brainwashed" and "Concert For George", this album is the first of an epic trilogy in which George first says good bye to us, and then we say goodbye to him.
4-0 out of 5 stars A must for collectors
George Harrison after the Beatles broke up only toured twice.
5-0 out of 5 stars The missing piece................
i dont believe that people actually complain bout Live in Japan, come on guys, its george playing live.... how can u compare it to the 'concert for george' cd, sure the band for the tribute cd sounds better, maybe they even sing better then george, but u guys are missing the point, it aint a george song if he aint singing it, its just bunch of guys singing george songs, yeah u ave paul and ringo, they ave rite to sing it coz their the only surviving members but its like saying u luv birtney spears singing 'yer blues' or 'hey jude' or 'yellow submarine' or even 'for you blues', i beg to differ, even george not singing at his best, it is still george singing, if u listen closely, george is singing thru his heart, he meant every word, understand every word, coz who else in the world would know the meaning of the songs except for george, i should say he sang kinda like ala bob dylan in times they are a changin', george sang every song like he wanted to, if he feels the melody of the song should be sang like that so be it, every track is worth listen to, some of the song hadnt been played since the 60's, such as taxman etc, that alone is worth buying the cd, if u a truly beatles fan and truly a george harrison fan, u wouldnt complain 1 bit, coz its actually the best LP george had ever release since all things must pass and cloud 9..... ... HAVE PLAYED THIS CD A FEW TIMES, BUT HAVENOT REALLY LISTENED YET.THIS WAS A HEADS UP FROM A FRIEND.

5-0 out of 5 stars YES I DO BELIEVE, I DO BELIEVE!
I had lost all hope in this generation of music. RAP CRAP had consumed all young people giving them no hope for distingushing TRUE TALENT! But then.... along comes Isley and Bacharach. Is it commercial? I HOPE SO! Why is there a stigma to something that sould sell and give the listners more music sweetness to their ears and soul then has happened for years? Ron Isley has emerged as a talent to behold. His sometimes Al Green sounds heals the most savage beasts of music wantoness. I only wonder what can be done for a follow-up to this masterpiece?

4-0 out of 5 stars "THE BIGGEST WEIRDO OF THEM ALL..."
A good, good friend of mine sent me a copy of this wonderful CD/DVD collection. So before I give Here in America the most honest review I can muster, I must admit that: 1. My copy is a highly prized gift & 2. Rich Mullins is a hero of mine (see Rich's own definition of a hero on the DVD). That said, I honestly don't like much of the music on the CD (there are some blazing exceptions though)--but I LOVE the DVD!
5-0 out of 5 stars The DVD alone makes this worth buying
Buy this CD/DVD if you want to watch Rich Mullins perform live. The songs on the CD are classic Mullins and inspire and entertain. All Mullins fans should have this CD/DVD in their collecton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this for the music . . .
About the title of this review . . . it may seem a bit strange for me to reccomend that you not buy a CD or DVD of one of Christian music's top (if not the top) singer and songwriters for the music. However, the Here in America set is not really about the music, though there is plenty of music to enjoy.Indeed, there are a great number of Rich's greatest songs on the CD and (especially) the DVD for your listening pleasure, even a few rarities like Rich's demo on the CD for the song Debby Boone would eventually record, "O Come All Ye Faithful" (no, not the Christmas hymn). The DVD also features great renditions of Rich's top songs performed live with the Ragamuffin Band, refreshingly escaping the over-production most of them recieved on their recorded versions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You are there!
All of the previous reviews will tell you that this is a great concert album. For me, this is one of those albums that fully blooms when listened to on good quality headphones - ones that completely shut out all outside noise and give high quality sound. When you experience this album in a pure environment, you literally feel as if you are in the middle of the stage on a cool summer evening in Los Angeles - true "surround sound".Having grown up there and attended many concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, I can say that this album evokes the experience like none other that I have heard. So put on your headphones, close your eyes, and enjoy the trip!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mangione On Fire
Recently, while looking here on amazon to see if Main Squeeze had yet been re-mastered and reissued, I encountered An Evening of Magic. I don't know why I did not already have this on vinyl. Perhaps I ignored it when it was released because I was justifiably leery of "live" recordings and then subsequently just forgot about it. Anyhow, when I saw that the entire Main Squeeze album was on this CD, I ordered it, Main Squeeze itself being unavailable at any reasonable price. And as it turns out, I was really missing out on some great music all these years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jazz Orchestra
I wish that there was a music category called "Jazz Performance with Full Orchestra Accompaniment".Those who have heard 'Hubert Laws, The San Francisco Concert', or 'Phil Woods/Floresta Canto, or Bob James Two, or Sadao Watanabe/How's Everything', will know what I mean.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Don't Have To Be Italian
You don't have to be Italian to enjoy this CD.It is a delightful potpurri of artists that epitomize the those songs familiar to those who are aroung 50 years of age. This CD is sonically brilliant.I wonder whatprocess was used to enhance these orginal cuts? Louie Prima's renditionof Just a Gigilo jumps out of the speakers, practically forcing you to graba partner and begin dancing across the living room floor.I highlyrecommend this CD. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Live CD!!!!
I have been a fan of George Benson for almost 3 decades. This is an excellent CD which does more to showcase his superb voice more than his great guitar playing.Among my favorites on this CD are....Lady Blue, The Greatest Love Of All, and It's All In The Game. Some of the arrangements are with a disco-beat.Hey, this was the 70's after all and Disco-Jazz was at it's peak.Overall, this is an excellent live CD!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Benson Live
Weekend In L.A. is a smooth live recording by George Benson. His version of"On Broadway"is a great combination of jazz, r&b with a dash of funk thrown in.Mr. Benson's voice has never sounded finer and the song became a top ten single. There are other great performances on the album including the smoky "Lady Blue", the breezy title cut, the heavy jazz of "Ode To A Kudu" and a touching tribute to his mentor Wes Montgomery, "We Remember Wes".There is also Mr. Benson's original version of "The Greatest Love Of All" which is from the Muhammad Ali biopic, The Greatest. The song is nothing like the overplayed, schmaltzy version that Whitney Houston had a hit with.It is an understated, pretty song that Mr. Benson doesn't go over the top with.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best compromise of George Benson Singer and Guitarist
This particular recording exhibits a perfect compromise between George Benson pop singer and George Benson masterful guitarist."Ode to Kudu" is absolutely spectacular in it's beauty. George plays the hell out of it. "Weekend In La" has George flexing his jazz muscles on the is pleasant tune, you even hear a quick "I Got Rhythm" quote". Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Angel of the Night in Music!
This CD is the second Michael Crawford CD I have in addition to the original soundtrack of Phantom of the Opera. I have listened to the CD from beginning to end. I was in tears.. I laughed. I felt I knew all the songs, but in effect only some of them. I was feeling that the music lifted me up and took me directly live to that concert. This man had the power to take you in his hands and hold you to drag you down on your knees. I cannot put it down.. it goes with me in my car... I hum the songs alot. The man is simply a treasure you want to know in your lifetime. He can inspire you beyond anything you ever want to do. I have to admit being a music lover.. that he is one of the best I have ever heard in my life. I have yet to see his concert. AND I am making sure I do go to experience this LIVE! I think once the Phantom has touched you.. there is no where to hide... there is not anywhere you want to be alone. You can't go back to anything you ever knew.. once this CD is playing. He is an angel.. he is a magician.. he is just a very special man.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely enchanting
Michael Crawford is one of the finest singers on stage today. And this album of his live concert is filled with beautiful music and electricity.I would highly recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speechless...
A remarkable live recording, making me feel like I was right there in the audience. This album lives in my car. He is a truly remarkable performer and absolutely hilareous live- had the great opportunity to see him in EFX. His vocal ranges are incredible and his voice even more so. Truly an Angel of Music. Here he brings one to tears with the Irish medley and speaking of his Nan and to stomach-soreness laughter with "Let me show you my Raoul". Words cannot express how much I love this album, its a delicious treat. ...

The 38 tracks on the two-CD set, "The J. Geils Band Anthology," were arranged out of chronological order so the first 10 songs on the second disc could all be live recordings. Those songs give you a good sense of what the second set at a J. Geils show sounded like back in the days when the band was the most exciting blues-rock band in the land. On stage, the sextet would expand the boundaries of the blues to include everything from Stax and Motown to jackhammer rhythms and screaming solos, and that roadhouse party attitude carried over into a series of hit studio recordings. --Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
This is almost a 5 star collection.Had they included the John Lee Hooker song "Serves you right to Suffer", which was a show stopper in each show, I could have given it a 5th star. Despite this, it is a must have for anyone who had the luck to see one of their live shows.
5-0 out of 5 stars You don't like this...you got no soul
I remember when I got my first glimpse of the J. Geils Band.It was Don Kirshner's Rock Concert on ABC late one weekend night. Here it all was - rock 'n roll, blues, soul, charisma, energy and a flat-out dead-on sprint by a little band from Boston to absolutley (as they phrased it) blow your face out.I was speechless.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wow! High Energy Blues and Rock
If you are looking for high energy, mega bpm rock and blues, you've found the right CD. J Geils was founded in 1967 and was driven by three personalities, Peter "Wolf" Blankfield (vocals), Magic Dick Salwitz (on harp), and Jerome "J" Geils (on guitar). Wolf wrote many of the songs, but it was the driving harmonica, the incredible beat, and the blueze material which made their success.
