2-0 out of 5 stars A sad triumph of greed over quality
BEP was one of my favorite hip-hop acts of the late 90's. Their Debut album "Behind the Front" and even their Sophomore album "Bridging the Gap" continued a musical approach and ideology more akin to Tribe Called Quest, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, and the Roots than the current Gangster Rap trend.

Van Morrison reputedly wasn't crazy about the idea of a greatest-hits package, and this set's haphazard programming--which leaps from period to period, style to style, tossing in two key singles by his mid-'60s band Them--speaks to his lack of involvement. Still, it rivals Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
I had this disc once before and it was stolen. Loved it so much I had to buy it again. I wish it cotained Tupelo Honey and Into the Mystic. Other than that I love this disc . I recommend this to anyone. Whether you are a big fan or just only know a couple of his songs. Lively and uplifting. Great for traffic jams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wondering why they call this guy Van the Man?
Then you obviously don't own this CD. Fix that sometime soon. Any album with Brown Eyed Girl and a bunch of crappy songs is still worth a purchase, but you get lots more: Three good songs by Them (garage-band anthem Gloria, Baby Please Don't Go, Here Comes the Night) and several great songs by Van himself: the aforementioned Brown Eyed Girl, Sweet Thing, Moondance, And It Stoned Me, Domino, Jackie Wilson Said, Cleaning Windows and the previously-unreleased Wonderful Remark especially stand out, though there's more.
5-0 out of 5 stars favorite cd?
I bought this album in high school about 16 years ago. It's still probably my favorite album, though I now own a dozen of his others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy "Visions and Revisions"
'Best of' is a great update to their earlier 'Greatest Hits' album. This C.D. provides more highlights and mixes the songs better, overall.Unbelievably, it adds two more classics from 'Bridge Over Troubled Water,' but still doesn't make a purchase of the original classic redundant."A Hazy Shade of Winter," "At the Zoo," and "Fakin' It" are welcome additions that are undoubtedly better appreciated than their original release.(Significantly, these songs are played on oldies stations more now than in the past.)Their vintage hits don't fool around, either.None of them seem old, really.Unlike Dylan, they were as comfortable with spare, folk music as they were with ethereal, pop production."Sounds of Silence," "Feelin' Groovy," and "Homeward Bound" are excellent folk."The Dangling Conversation," "Scarborough Fair," "The Boxer," and "Bridge over Troubled Water" are exquisitely crafted pop masterpieces, and "I am a Rock" and "Mrs. Robinson" are folk-rock perfection. If you haven't been given enough, then this C.D. is rounded off with their reunion finale "My Little Town," which surprisingly only clocks in at about three-and-a-half minutes.Generosity and selection make this C.D. a must have for those who love timeless music from the sixties and early seventies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic of modern popular music
Many of these songs are now part of the American popular repertoire , there with the songs of the Beatles , Dylan, Rogers and Hart- Hammerstein, Berlin, Kern, Porter. They are songs which have the kind of pleasantness which stays in the mind, and can be heard over and over again.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great Track Selection but Not So Great Sound!
I know that relative to the other Greatest Hits album, the sound quality here is better but it's still very poor compared to what other remastered albums out there sound like.To be fair to the record company, nowhere on the cd does it say "remastered".It just says mastered by Vic Anesini.Let's hope they truly remaster this album soon by unearthing a much better master tape from the vaults.Volume levels are very low and although cleaner than the old versions, the overall sound is quite ordinary.Other than that, the track selections are very good and truly represent the best work that this dynamic duo have done.Simply great harmonies and great examples of brilliant songwriting on every track. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all time greats in his finest form
Van Morrison's Moondance is a great, soulful record from one of the best of the late 60's and early 70's. Featuring his finest collection of songs, the album has a little bit for everyone. Romantic songs like "Moondance" and "Crazy Love" as well as energy-filled tunes like "Caravan" and just great songs like "And it stoned me" help to make this one of the finest collection of songs ever assembled.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just short of a masterpiece.
A very relaxing album from Van, with plenty of great songs. Example? Try the opening one-two punch of And It Stoned Me and the title track, two of Van's most popular songs. But wait! Don't go away yet. There's also Caravan, a song that SHOULD be a classic butisn't quite, as well as Crazy Love and Into the Mystic, two songs I like but not as much as the first two and Caravan. It really is a shame about side two, since one song rises above the average level:Brand New Day, with a joyful chorus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kinks - 'The Ultimate Collection' (Red X)
The title of this 2-CD Kinks compilation says it all,'Ultimate Collection'.Total of 48 tracks for our listening pleasure. Sound quality is over the top, which is to say it is simply S-U-P-E-R-B! The FM radio hits you all have 'etched' in the back of your minds like I do are all here, like "You Really Got Me", "All Day And All Of The Night", "Tired Of Waiting For You" (my personal Kinks favorite), "Sunny Afternoon", the so-so "Come Dancing" (I like the video better than I do the song), "Lola"," Mr. Pleasant" and the unforgetable "Celluloid Heros". Just all around great British Invasion rock&roll. A must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of all the Kinks' greatest hits compilations
This is a quality double CD that tracks the history of one of the most talented and influential groups ever, not just of the 60's and 70's. There are some great "B" sides with all of their major hits included. There are a few songs left out that, if included, would have made this an even better collection - Misfits, 20th Century Man, Destroyer, Low Budget come to mind. But the Kinks have such a vast repertoire' I guess only a boxed set of 3-4 CD's could contain the entire depth and span of their music that many of us would like. But this is a gem for what it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Compilations Ever For Any Band
This cd, which I have been looking for for ages, is a truly awesome collection of all The Kinks' best stuff. These two discs contain just about everything you need if you only want one Kinks cd in your collection. Everything from "You Reallly Got Me" to "Lola" to "Celluloid Heroes" to "Come Dancing" and so much more is included. There's a great wealth of lesser known tracks (including some Dave Davies solo material) that are just as good as their biggest hits, there's a great essay for the liner notes and the sound quality is pitch perfect.

Resembling at times a soft-sung Robert Plant, Buckley was an intuitive vocalist capable of dizzying arabesques and choir-boy sweetness. He is joined here by a tight band for 10 tracks highlighting his stylistic range--Pearl Jam bluesy on "Eternal Life," impossibly serene on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," art-school noisy on "So Real," Led Zep daring on "Mojo Pin." Unorthodox, this was the debut of '94. Read more

How else can you describe the combination of his beautiful voice and well written music?I can't add anything to the volumes that have been written about this album already. An album with well over 500 reviews that is holding a 4.5 star average must have something going for it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Born to Croon
Jeff Buckley sounds like what Marc Bolan would have sounded like if Bolan had taken Perry Como as his musical muse.Seriously, think about Marc Bolan trying to sound like a '50's crooner and you'll know what Jeff Buckley sounds like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius
Gone to soon. What would he have become we will never really know and we are not better off because of his untimely death. An artist with creative vision and the talent to back it up. There is so little of his original music available it is difficult to really understand were he was headed and were his creative would have eventually taken him. The multiple albums of his original music has captured his songs in different stages of develoment and arrangement such that no two versions are completely the same and document his development.

Much like their brethren Mercy Me, Casting Crowns was thrust into the limelight from a worship band beginning. With steady chops honed from hundreds of shows/services a year and a simple, straight-ahead rock style, the Florida-based band found themselves on top of the charts thanks to the success of massive singles "Who Am I?" and "The Voice of Truth" from its self-titled debut (2003). Lifesong is a sensible sophomore follow-up that shows the band expanding its musical creativity while lyrically remaining true to the cause. There’s a common thread of humility throughout as front man Mark Hall sings of the disenfranchised ("Does Anybody Hear Her"), the heartbroken ("Praise You in This Storm"), and the remorseful ("Prodigal"). Hall even calls outside for songwriting help from the brilliant Nichole Nordeman in "Stained Glass Masquerade," a cautionary warning about church hypocrisy in the face of keeping it real. The radio-friendly, U2- ish "Lifesong" proves a savvy book-end to the penitent closer "And Now My Lifesong Sings." Both evoke strong messages that worship is all about how one lives a life and not what kind of songs they may sing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD - One of the best Christian recordings in years!
Each song on this CD has lots of encouraging spiritual content. The musical arrangements are absolutely top notch. The lead singer has a voice that touches the heart. This is really excellent Christian music that is so hard to find aside from the Hillsong productions which are excellent too.

Music doesn't come more touching than this. With their debut single alone, the emotion-fortified "Shiver," Coldplay prove they can shift between elated and crushed in a breath, as singer Chris Martin pours out music's oldest chestnut (unconditional yet unrequited love) with the shakiest of voices and a backdrop of epic guitars. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best kept secret in Music
This is my first review on Amazon but I was inspired to write this after picking up the CD.
2-0 out of 5 stars Limp Melodies and So-So Songwriting
Now on their sixth studio album (and second on a major label) Carbon Leaf plays it safe with the inoffensive rock/pop of "Love, Loss, Hope, Repeat." Lead vocalist Barry Privett has a warm, pleasant way of delivering his lyrics, and renowned producer Peter Collins fulfills his duties. Nevertheless, the 11-song collection is most notable for its power of subtlety. In fact, it is so subtle that not one song is memorable.
4-0 out of 5 stars A CD That Grows On You
After listening to "Echo Echo" and "Indian Summer"my first impression of "Love, Loss, Hope, Repeat" was that it was a bit too soft and slow. However, the more I listened to it, the more it began to grow on me.I recentlty saw the band play live in Madison, Wisconsin and I have to say that the new songs come alive when played live.It was an awesome concert and each song flowed smoothly into the next. They opened up with "Comfort" and it was full of energy and power."Learn to Fly" as well as "Under The Wire" sounded amazing.I may have to rate the album a 5 star after a few more listens. My advice... catch these guys live. You won't be dissapointed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars `I Stand With The Sons Of Cain'
I first purchased a copy of `The Joshua Tree' on tape when I was 15 years old after I had bought `Rattle and Hum'. I loved many of the new songs on `Rattle and Hum' like Heartland, Desire and Hawkmoon 269 so `The Joshua Tree' was a natural purchase. This is where the problem starts and where I differ from a lot of other `Joshua Tree' fans but the reason may be lost on the CD generation. (Side A / Side B) Bands often put all their best material on Side A of a record through a sometimes pain staking selection process. The problem I have with this album is that I prefer and believe side B to be infinitely superior to Side A.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential in any rock collection
This album is quite possibly their crowning glory and is what all their other albums are judged by. It continues in the direction that Unforgettable Fire paved the way for. The opening three songs show U2 looking inward, loneliness, relationships, have become rock anthems and a staple for their concerts. The sound is carried over to In God's Country & One Tree Hill. The other tracks display U2's interest in America and it's music. And the way Exit builds is simply superb. An essential album in the annals of rock history and an essential addition to any music collection. Their recent offerings pale compared to this. What do you mean you don't own it yet?

5-0 out of 5 stars U2 finds what they have been looking for.
Alright I am a diehard U2 fan and have all their LPs, a few EPs and three singles.Back in 1987, I bought the CD thinking "Wow, another U2 release," and flying down to FL to visit my parents. To tell the truth, "Fire" disappointed me a little bit, so I was very curious about this release. When I first heard the opening notes to "Where the Streets have No Name" and Edge's ringing guitar, I was spellbound.Yes, I loved U2 but I hadn't expected anything like this.I continued listening to the CD and it was a masterpiece, classic song after classic song.I kept listening to it even after I got home, and even now, I still listen to this CD on iTunes, ages after it first came out. From "Streets" to the tear-jerking closer of "Mothers of the Disappeared", there is not one bad song ("Exit" isn't as good as the rest but still awesome).

5-0 out of 5 stars Jessica at the top of her game!
I've liked Jessica from the start of her career in the 90s but I became a bonafide fan after Newlyweds. Her album at the time, 'In This Skin', was alright for me, it had a couple standout tracks but mostly filler. I didnt like it because it was really boring with ballad after ballad.
3-0 out of 5 stars Average Fare From Average Talent
True talent never fades. It builds on its legacy with each succeeding generation. That's why people are still buying CDs by the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and country singer Patsy Cline. Jessica Simpson is a nice, good looking kid (with a really weird dad). But she's not particularly talented. Her voice is often overwrought and its painful to watch her facial gyrations when she sings. This was obvious when she teamed with Jewel for a duet on one of hers and Nick's specials. Jewel's voice was lyrical and seamless, Jessica's was forced and unpolished. She might have a future in acting as she has a comical, self deprecating quality that's endearing. But the music is nothing special.

5-0 out of 5 stars JESSICA...LOVE THIS CD !!!
I really think that most of the people leaving reviews for this cd are those who have issue with Jessica herself. Read the reviews by Amazon, Allmusic.com and most all reviews for this cd are raves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection!
I bought this CD about a year ago.It is a dynamic, excellent collection of Earth, Wind & Fire's best songs. They go from 1973 to 1981 with the hits and even included the heavily requested Reasons. When I first heard them in 1978, I thought that their 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1976 hits were all new, all off of one new album. But these songs from various years just showed me the massive impact they had in the '70s.The live band, the emphasis on horns and a complete band playing music and tearing it up.And funky songs like September, Serpentine Fire, Getaway, Boogie Wonderland and others. Maurice White's knew what he wanted out of this band and they're still doing it over 35 years later with live performances in 2006! Although I miss Maurice in the band, Verdine White, Philip Bailey and this other fellow are keeping his dream alive.Other favorites I like are Let's Groove, That's the Way of the World, the mellow After the Love has Gone and others. They chose a good 17 for this collection, and while it's not the most perfect, it fully compiles their success of hits and well requested songs! ... Apparently there's nothing in Kabbalah that disallows sweaty, head-spinningly good dance music, because here comes a flame-haired Madonna hawking a dozen songs' worth: Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I refuse to gush *just* because it's Madonna
Despite the seemingly endless fanfare and continual play on the floors of retail clothing stores across the country, I must say I was disappointed with this album - even despite approaching it with the most modest of expectations. I have always seem Madonna as a highly effective marketer, rather than a songwriter, and that impression was firmly entrenched by this album.
5-0 out of 5 stars ZOWIE...
One word... Amazing!!!Well maybe more words... Madonna continues to go beyond what any of us ever expect. This album is about 5 years in the future if not more. It's hard to believe that someday we'll listen to this CD as something out of date, but now that I've listened to it about 6 times, I already consider her albums, "Music" and "Ray of Light" not as cutting edge as they were when they both came out. This album surpasses them beautifully. As my friend Drew said best, "...she knows how to set a trend and set a trend very very well."Again, AMAZING CD.Keep it coming, Madonna. (ps. I love the fact that I'm only about one year older than her, which continues to make me feel good---that I ain't old at all.) (Another ps. While the reviewer before my own posted review doesn't like the album, which he/she is entitled to, I must add that this IS a disco album, so what it lacks in lyrics [somewhat weak; you have to listen between the lines], it makes up for in music composition, which is robust, very unique and yes, for the die-hard Madonna fans, very dance-able.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Stuck in the 70'S
This ALbum is total trash, the only good track is "Get Together" Other than that...........its totally not worth it. But everyone writing reviews are madonna queens so they will enjoy anything she puts out. If she sang lalalalalalalalal boom boom, theses idiots would be like oh my god number one dance track since bedtime stories!!! Unfortunately I have to give it 1 star or else amazon wont let me post it! ... Read more

Editorial Review

The Goo Goo Dolls have long since traded the bracing, Replacements-lite abandon of their early days for an ethos of heart-on-their-sleeve emotionality wed to a solid heartland pop craftsmanship that's too easily been casually mislabeled. Superstar producer Glen Ballard (who shares many a writing credit here as well) pushes that latter sensibility to its logical extremes, ensuring a slick sonic experience that won't disappoint those who hitched themselves to the Dolls' wagon circa their mid '90s commercial breakthrough. But there remains a nagging sense that this is a band that isn't pushing itself very hard: even the hook-solid opening single "Stay With You" seems downright cautious. Coupled with Ballard's penchant for polish, Johnny Rzeznik's introspection on "Without You Here" hews close to the center line before Robbie Takac's "Listen" gives the album a much-needed jolt of energy. The album's featured cover, a faithful, contemporary AOR-friendly take on Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit," is emblematic of the Goo Goo Dolls fortunes here: They often seemed boxed in by a past that's not necessarily their own. 1-0 out of 5 stars Man... can you say brainwashed trash?
This is the most ovhyped paltry piece of corporate garbage that has been my displeasure to enter my ears. -_-This album is terrible... not much more to say then that. The muscianship is terrible, the lyrics are more cheesy than you'd believe possible.I mean come on with a title like Let Love In you can basically tell this is the epitimy of all sellout albums.About anything up to before A boy named Goo is great with ACTUAL LYRICS!!!Plus its not a snoozefest they all have great songs to listen to!Guess its bands like this that keep the greedy corporate machine running.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Goo Goo Dolls CD!!!
There are a lot of great songs on this CD...At first I only recognized the hits like "Better Days","Stay With You", and "Let Love In", but then as I listened to the other songs they kept growing on me, and now I can sing the words to all of them! One thing I really liked about this CD, and previous ones like Dizzy up The Girl, and Gutterflower, is that there are so many great songs on each CD. It really seems that Johnny and the boys have taken great care in making sure each song is great, not like some groups where 1 or 2 songs are potential hits, and the rest are filler. I highly recommend that you get this CD!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars What happened?
I will be honest here, I love the Goo Goo Dolls steming from the first album I bought, which was jed.I can understand to really make it in this business you need to be on the radio and the googs have done just that. They have metomorphed their music for the main stream. That part Im okay with, Ive actually enjoyed their previous mainstream albums. However with this one Im just plain dissapointed. It seems like Im listening to a 80's love ballards.Where is the power?Where is the rock? They are all mainly love ballards with no real power to them.I can really only enjoy the first couple of songs on the album and the rest just disgusts me.Even when the guitarist guy (ive forgotten his name) tries to have a go at a ballard its rediculous. He dosent have the voice to be singing those kinds of songs.I really feel they have lost their touch as a band. I am wondering what John was thinking when he wrote this album and put it together.Im really dissapointed. It way to lovey dovey and soft for me ... Read more

Editorial Review

Augustana's finely burnished debut again points up the contrast between contemporary American rock's persistent navel-gazing and the vibrant, back-to-the-future vibe of resurgent Britpop. The angst-ridden lyrical pleas of mainstay Dan Layus are often informed by the band's restless westward travels from its Midwestern roots on tracks like the spare "Roosevelt" and lush, mid-tempo gem of a ballad, "Boston." Yet one can almost count the modern rock influences on the album's opening wall-of-guitar conceits, "Mayfield" and "Bullets," and elsewhere, the likely residue ofTrain and Wallflowers producer Brendan O'Brien's aggressive studio slickery. It's to Layus' and the band's credit that the album's best moments are usually its most emotionally and musically direct, as witnessed by the moody title track, "Boston" and folk-tinged closer, "Coffee and Cigarettes." The soaring drama of "California Burning" throws all those elements firmly against the wall and damned near makes ‘em stick, ample evidence that the band has the potential to rise above the comfortably safe familiarity that sometimes seems to constrain them here.
