5-0 out of 5 stars Knocks me out
Eva Cassidy knocks me out!I heard about her on NPR a couple of years ago, and I finally got some of her music.Astounding the way she phrased these songs."Autumn Leaves" could make a statue cry."Somewhere Over the Rainbow", "Songbird" and "Fields of Gold" are equally amazing.Anyone who truly appreciates a styling genius will find her music rewarding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great relaxing music!
Her voice is gorgeous, just like a songbird!!!! So sad that she is now singing with the angels, before more of her works could be published.

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought this CD because of Everwood and I'm glad I did...
I heard Fields of Gold on the season finale of Everwood and thought whoever was singing it had a beautiful voice. When I hear a song I like I usually just have to find out who sings it.I did a little research and found that it was Eva Cassidy.I tried to download the song from ITunes but couldn't find it.Soooo, my next stop was Amazon.I searched for Eva Cassidy, found the CD, and bought it.I really like the whole CD.Her music is very soothing to me.My favorite songs are Wade in the Water, Over the Rainbow, and Fields of Gold.I ordered Time After Time and just received it several days ago.I've listened to some of the songs, but not the entire CD just yet.Eva Cassidy has a beautiful voice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting soundtrack for a film that highlights John's politics in the 1970's
This CD offers a great deal of incredible music by John Lennon during 1969 and the early 1970's when he fought our government in order for him and Yoko to live in the United States. The quality of the music is excellent and after you listen to this CD you want to run to watch the film!
4-0 out of 5 stars good single disk retrospective
dock it one star for Yoko Ono's summing up over the intro to "Oh My Love".Nice intro, but you won't hear it here.Everything else is unharmed. One new live track, "Attica State" (a very silly lyric), and one new remastered Beatles track. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's common knowledge that solo albums are simply an excuse for a frustrated band member to indulge their experimental sides and Rob Thomas, singer for decidedly M.O.R. multiplatinum rockers Matchbox Twenty is not one to pass on the opportunity. Having already explored the classic rock thing through his collaborations with Mick Jagger and Santana, Thomas goes the other way here with results that are unexpected, and, sometimes totally unbelievable. He veers from modern R&B on the Justin Timberlake-aping "Lonely No More" to vintage prog-rock in "All That I Am," touching on all points in between. There are a few nods to the Matchbox canon with "Ever the Same" and "This Is How a Heart Breaks" but, as the title suggests, this is an album about finding himself. For the moment, Thomas is still searching. The DualDisc portion features 5.1 surround sound, a 20-minute documentary on the making of the album by filmmaker Gillian Grisman, plus the holiday tune, "Christmas in New York."Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It's probably a good CD
but I wouldn't know because when I got my copy (not ordered from Amazon) it was this super thick disk that was bigger than all my other CD's and won't fit in my CD player. As a result I'm afraid to try it in my car becuase I don't want it to get stuck.
4-0 out of 5 stars Rob Thomas is one to watch...
His singing style is very unique as are his lyrics. He has an eclectic mix of love songs, "we are the world" type songs and a few others on this album. He has the staying power for long the long term and I would love to see him mature throughout the years and watch to see where he goes.I loved Streetcorner Symphony! It is so upbeat it can pull me out of whatever is ailing me.Lonely No More is my theme song for right now in my life - needless to say I am replaying grooves in that one!Enjoy this album - I sure do!

1-0 out of 5 stars In a word... horrifying
I must admit, I kind of like Matchbox 20. I never went out and bought their albums, but songs like "Push" and "The Real World" do bring back some good memories of the mid-to-late-90's (although the late '90s was when pop culture first began to truly suffer).

While not exactly classical crossover's take on The Monkees, this international quartet of young male vocalists from America, France, Spain, and Switzerland shares a similar genesis. Assembled after a long talent search and audition process, they were teamed with pop producers Per Magnusson and David Krueger (Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys) and Steve Mac (Charlotte Church, Kelly Clarkson) and turned loose on a slate of classical-pop favorites, with a dramatic, dynamically nuanced read of Toni Braxton's signature "Unbreak My Heart" setting the standard. While the deceptive ease of their harmonies belie the group's disparate nationalities and talent search roots on the melodramatic "Hoy Que Ya No Estas Aqui," Morricone's glorious Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Il Divo- Divine Singer (couldn't have put it better myself)
These four men truly are divine singers. Three(Carlos, David, Urs) have beautiful operatically trained voices. Seb, the French pop singer, adds a very warm, informal, easy-going air. This first album has much variety. From the sweet, romantic songs like Every Time I Look at You, and The Man You Love, to huge, sweeping, dramatic finales of Senza Catene, Feelings, My Way, and Regresa A Mi. Each piece is tastefully chosen and profoundly moving. Besides... the four fellas don't look so bad themselves. Ok... maybe that was an understatement. They are all very good-looking. But Urs Buhler, the Swiss tenor, *THUD*, he is a work of art... So, you have four gorgeous guys with gorgeous voices singing gorgeous pieces of music... what more could you ask for? The songs are either so romantic they're tear-jerking, or so powerful they almost leave you stunned. These four guys deserve to be the superstars they are. Five Stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Elvis Lives!
Okay, I'll admit it. I'm not a huge music fan and certainly know virtually nothing about opera, and up until a couple of weeks ago, I had never even heard of Il Divo. But then one day, I was in a book store during lunch and heard an incredible song titled, "The Man You Love" playing on the in-house system and knew right away I had to find out who it was and get the CD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love at first sound....
I was looking for a cd that I could listen to all of the time.Oh my God, I am breathless.I was brought to tears as they sang "Mama".My mother passed away in 2002 and I never got a chance to say thank you and this song said it all.All of Il Divo's songs have touched me in a way that no one else could.Thank you for touching my heart.I really recommend that you give this cd a chance. All of these other people on the board that gave it a low score, obviously need a hearing aid and a heart.Blessings ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Elvis, it's the wonder of YOU !!!
Elvis Presley died too young; but his music and his gift to us will live forever. This CD boasts a whopping 30 number one hits recorded by Elvis. This is not merely an introduction to Elvis or a standard retrospective of his work; this CD is also a celebration of Elvis' talent and the wonder of Elvis sharing his artistry with all of us.
5-0 out of 5 stars Elvis on Vinyl
I always enjoyed listening to Elvis growing up. My parents were shattered when he died in August 1977. Mom especialy enjoyed Elvis and thru that enjoyment I grew up listening to him in our home. This compilation is an excellent package for seasoned fans as well as newcommers to enjoy the magical legacy that Elvis has given us
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Talented Entertainer.
As well as being the most successful performer of all time ,Elvis Presley is also the most ridiculed. In the end though, all that will matter is the musical legacyhe left behind. Of all the 800+ songs that he recorded there are only a handful that could be considered trash. As well as the standard hits which are found on this album , there is a abundance of rarer tracks to be found on box sets and the "Follow That Dream " BMG label which caters to the fans who have to have everything!. Elvis was probably the most versatile singer of all time and because of his willingness to try styles that other singers wouldnt even attempt , we are left with magical music to satisfy us for a long time to come.Long Live The King!!. ... Roll your eyes or--worse--invoke the Spice Girls all you want: Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like any one of the members of this revolving collective? Dissing the Pussycat Dolls is like denying you want a peek at the Victoria's Secret runway show--a foolhardy stance nobody's going to believe anyway. Never mind, for a moment, the semi-lewd pleasures of the disc's visuals (midriffs galore!): the pop on parade by this gang of writhers and eyelash-batters isn't bad. Nicole Scherzinger, a former member of the failed prefab teen pop act Eden's Crush, brings it with determination and carefully distributed shots of sweetness. More important, she gets high-wattage help. Busta Rhymes, Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am, and Timbaland all step in to dress up the Dolls' sound, and the songwriters' and producers behind Read more

Editorial Review

Rod Stewart's career has been subject to so many twists that a single-disc overview is somehow both appealingly broad and inadequate to the task of tracing all those zigzags. From beloved rocker of the first order to disco dilettante to pop crooner, Stewart's career has presented challenges to fans who may have been charmed by the rollickingly randy "Maggie May" and bemused by the alarmingly narcissistic "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" This 16-song retrospective touches all the bases without delving deeply into any era. The selections aren't arranged sequentially and the booklet is much more generous with vintage photos than album credits. This best-of collection is clearly aimed at the casual fan, but no album that presents Rod the Mod gems "Downtown Train," "You Wear It Well," and "Reason to Believe" one after another is a throwaway. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Voice Is What Makes It Work
Rod Stewart's penchant for crossing to and from and back through all categories of rock-pop music makes it often hard to define exactly where he fits into all this. The one undeniable constant is his raspy voice that seems to work for him with great affection and appeal. His great versatility to utilize his voice so surreptitiously is a real talent. One CD cannot represent an entire career but it can give us snippets here and there where his distinctive and alluring voice has taken him and us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers the basics, but Legacy: The Absolute Best is a better comp
Okay, don't get me wrong, I love the Doors - they made some of the greatest American music (along with Dylan and the Velvet Underground) during the British Invasion days, and their music has not dated in the least. And this two-disc, nineteen-track comp does do a good job of rounding up the bare essentials (Light My Fire, Break On Through, The End, Love Me Two Times, The Unknown Soldier, Five to One, Hello I Love You, Touch Me, Roadhouse Blues, Riders on the Storm, L.A. Woman), it's missing some very important songs, most notably Peace Frog (an inexcusable omission), plus Soul Kitchen, Not to Touch the Earth, Moonlight Drive, Twentieth Century Fox, Back Door Man and a few other good ones that managed to make it on Legacy: The Absolute Best. And why Alabama Song was included in the place of any of the above songs is simply inexcusable - in my mind, that's one of the group's weaker songs (along with Touch Me, while I'm ranting). That said, it's not at all a bad way at all to get into the Doors, and tends to be less expensive than Legacy. So if you need the absolute basics, and nothing more, this would be a good way to get them in one fell swoop. But if you want to dig a bit deeper, that's what Legacy's for.

2-0 out of 5 stars For your own good, please don't buy this!
This two disc set just barely brushes the surface of what the Doors have to offer. Here are some awesome, essential Doors songs you'll be missing out on, just to name a few:
1-0 out of 5 stars A papier mache hero.
The "Lizard King" was a hero of the "counterculture" until 3/1/1969.Then, he turned into a cowering wimp!!!When it came to assaulting traditional American values, the "Lizard King" was awesome.See: the Ed Sullivan Show, the Singer Bowl riot, his Oedipal days at the Whiskey, etc. However, when the powers that be finally decided to push back, the "Lizard King" became a professional victim-a misunderstood artist who simply had "something to say."He whined about how everyone was out to get him. That's why the "conterculture" failed. They were good at pushing, but, when it came to pushing back, they were exposed for what they were: a bunch of bed-wetters.Thirty-eight years on, it's no surprise that America never "broke on through."Hey Ray, John, and Robbie: your fearless leader turned into a gutless turd!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!!!!
Now this is one of if not the best greatest hits album ever made. Tom Petty is a very underrated artist and this album shows how great he was and is. From his first album untill today Tom Petty is one of the best rockers out there. Every song here is a classic and can be listened to over and over. Must have for anyone who likes music. Tom Petty rocks!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars It was because of the oldies, but goodies
I feel that after Petty released "Full Moon Fever". and hung around with the rest of the Travelling Willburys he lost some of the moxie that his albums had. There were some rather good nuggets left off here like "Shadow Of A Doubt", "Thing About You", and "Letting You Go". I felt the two new songs on here are split down the middle. "Mary Jane's Last Dance" is pathetic, and last desparate act. However, "Somthing In The Air" is a respectable cover of the Thunderclap Newman song from 1969, and in some ways even better. "Mary Jane" though was one of the horrible songs I had to endure listening to the first few months that I moved down to Florida. The oldies saved this from a bad rating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone who loves music should own this
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits captures just that from their debut in 1976 right up until 1993, before they moved to the Warner label. Around the time of its release, the single "Mary Janes Last Dance" was a huge worldwide smash and that song, and a cover of the old classic Thunderclap Newman "Something In The Air" which was a humble hit in England complemented most of their best and well known hits at the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strange, twisted, and funny
The second I heard the song, "Crows," I knew I had to own this album.I know nothing of Lemony Snicket books, but I've a been a Magnetic Fields fan for awhile. So, after very awkwardly browsing the childrens' section at the bookstore, I was able to find a copy of this really great album.I was very happily surprised to find that this CD is more in line with Merritt's great early nineties albums (like Holiday, Wasps' Nests, and The New Despair) rather than i or (shudder) Showtunes. This is a great mix of synths and traditional instruments (if you consider an electric sitar "traditional").The lyrics are very depressing/weird/funny/moving depending on the song, though some are all four.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Gothic Archies' strongest outing yet...
...and one of Stephin Merritt's most memorable, and by far the funniest. On this album he is doing what he does best: being a glum old curmudgeon-popster with tongue wedged squarely in cheek. No knowledge of the Lemony Snicket books is needed. There are a number of direct references in several of the songs, but the lyrics stand on their own quite well, particular in numbers such as Freakshow, Shipwrecked, How Do You Slow This Thing Down?, and A Million Mushrooms.Expect an expertly crafted mixture of glum yet surprisingly catchy arrangements coupled with more of Merritt's hilariously morose lyrics.Highly recommended! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Something Missing
I am not going to rate this particular album as compared to the other two Coldplay releases as they are all essentually the same quality.I really find that I enjoy listening to Coldplay, however it took a while to figure out why.I have decided that Coldplay represents to me what I miss from yesteryear on the radio, however, there is nothing groundbreaking or unique about Coldplay's music. For those younger people who believe Coldplay is the next this or that, well, they aren't.I think my biggest problem with Coldplay is they lack an identity of their own, which is why there is so much debate on who they sound like.Throughout their collection, I hear U2, Dave Matthews, Depeche Mode, the softer Smashing Pumpkins, and even Soundgarden (Daylight).Maybe it is commendable that they remind me of so many other bands, as it suggests they are not one dimensional.
5-0 out of 5 stars great album
Coldplay rocks! rocking, yet raw and spiritual, simple and moody, yet uplifting. "Politik" rocks while "clocks" is a beautiful and earthy song. Other standout tracks include "The Scientist", "in my place" and "amsterdam" great album, buy it if you dont already have it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Regarding "Honest Opinion"
Amazon's claim that these are snippets of some of the songs from a larger LP, ARE CORRECT. I give this three stars just as a middle grade / to not sway the other reviews, but FWIW the actual LP will be released on Halloween. This is not the full album that people have heard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vintage WHO....but no Entwistle or Daltrey "B" side song...
This is THE WHO in 2006. Finally after what is left of the band plus 4 some superb musicians like Pino Palladino, Zack Starkey, Simon Townshend and John "Rabbit" Bundrick, entered the studio with Pete Townshend not only writing all the songs but producing and mixin, we have THE WHO first taste of their complete new collection of songs since 1982 "IT S' HARD", a cd with great songs and production but with a wrong runnin order (the same problem that "Who are You" had). THE WHO began recording this cd in 2002 when John Entwistle was still alive. They practice 3 songs and released two on "NOW and THEN" another "greatest hits" CD with two SIMON TOWNSHEND produced songs: "REAL GOOD LOOKING BOY" (a tribute to Elvis and Pete himself), and the great tribute song to John Entwistle "OLD RED WINE". They did practice a Roger Daltrey song called "CERTIFIED ROSE" that remains unreleased in the best of WHO tradition. JOHN ENTWISTLE recorded many songs on his own for this proyect but did not gave to Roger and Pete, as STEVE LUONGO said on an interview...and the sad thing is that neither Roger or Pete took the time to ask for them in order to hear them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tommy's Grandparents
Pete Townshend didn't just invent the rock opera, but also the "mini opera" when he wrote "A Quick One While He's Away", which Pete often referred to in early performances as "Tommy's Parents".Well, Wire and Glass could be "Tommy's Grandparents" because this rich song cycle delves deeply into Townshend's familiar semi-autobiographical world which will be instantly recognizable to any Who fan. From the self-confessional "They Made My Dreams Come True" which echoes the Cincinnati tragedy ("people died when I performed") and the Isle of Wight ("and the band played on until the dawn") to the powerful Mirror Door which revisits Tommy and the Mirror in so many ways, Wire and Glass proves that while Daltrey's voice may be fading, Pete Townshend is still the best songwriter of his or any other generation. To be fair, like any Who material, Wire and Glass works best on the stage, so be sure it see it live if and when you have the chance. ... Editorial Review

The Weepies are a duo of songwriters Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. How can one not help but be delighted when two such similar sound names align with one another? Perfectly matched, the thirteen songs are quiet but insistent, with lyrics full of pop smarts and poetic depth. Narratives, whether fragmented or direct, empower most of the songs, giving even first-person vantage points a solid foundation. Talan does the bulk of the lead vocals, and her voice is a confident instrument, full of sly surprise and subtle phrasing. The pair's harmonies are thoughtful and evocative, oftentimes utilizing less than obvious intervals. In fact, the chorus vocals owe more to great radio pop of the sixties and seventies than to the various contemporary strains of folk and Americana. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly amazing
I just bought it because I liked the cover art. That's not entirely true, I did hear one of their songs on the Paste sample CD.Anyway, this is smart music; smart lyrics, smart melodies and smart writing. It's very soft, subtle music (which is where I'm at musically right now). Most of the songs focus on the vocals which means that the listener will listen to the lyrics.I can't say enough about the song "The World Spins Madly On"Blew me away when I first heard it and still does.It sounds like a Fountains of Wayne not to mention he sounds a little bit like Adam Slessinger.Never before have I heard someone sing about the world moving on while I silently sit still and think about the opportunities I've passed up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music
This is the kind of CD that makes you smile when you listen to it.It's the kind that makes you want to sing along before you even know all of the words. The kind where you think every song on it might be your favorite. The songwriting is thoughtful, heartfelt and sweet (in the best possible sense of the word) while also exhibiting an intellectual edge. The lyrics are well-written without overshadowing the lovely harmonies that Steve and Deb have created. Her voice is evocative of Patty Griffin, but at the same time is unique and absolutely lovely. His voice is just at nuanced and gorgeous, and when they are singing together, it is a study in the beauty the human voice can produce. This is Americana at it's finest.I'm torn between wishing The Weepies all of the commercial success they so richly deserve and wanting to keep them my little (newly discovered...thanks, NPR!) secret.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Weepies
Infectious and joyful, I literally feel better after listening to their CD.Able to communicate the sorrows faced in life within a validating presense."Painting by Chagal" is terribly romantic, captures the essence of what the experience of "love" is."Painting by Chagal" is part poetry, mythology and ordinary reality. ... The simple blues-informed pop charms of L.A. songwriter Kevin Moore remain unchanged on his eighth album. All twelve of these songs about romance and its triumphs and failures go down easy, thanks to his unhurried and unmannered singing, and arrangements that run slow and spare. That openness allows Moore's slide playing, perfected on the porch of Mississippi delta bluesman Eugene Powell, to add subtle, pretty decoration to tunes like "Your Love" and "Eileen." He's got a sympathetic cohort in John Porter, who also produced Moore's debut album and is especially adept at capturing the sounds of the acoustic instruments that dominate this disc. After pursuing all the twists and turns of love and its baggage on Read more

With her fourth album, Australia's Kasey Chambers is expanding her realm. There are bigger sounds, including a flurry of electric guitars, and she has winningly created a whole new set of mysterious tensions. Eschewing the softer sound that had defined her earlier work, Chambers' innocent sounding voice is now set against a world of shadows and acute angles. The band also eases into a range of sophisticated grooves, from the noir-infused "Light up a Candle" to the barn burning "Got You." Chambers can still churn out catchy melodies, which she does at every turn (the chorus to "Sign on the Door" is unstoppable), though she keeps them from ever becoming cloying. Also with the expansive arrangements there's a dynamic quality to the album as a whole, as density gives way to open spaces. Indeed, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Divine
This is a phenomenal album that grows stronger w/each listen. From the opening, hypnotic "Colour of a Carnival" to the closing, heartfelt "Don't Look So Sad," there's nary a weak track. And while it's true that Kasey has eschewed some of the alt.country underpinnings of her previous works for a more mainstream approach, there's still plenty of twang here - "Light up a Candle," "Hard Road" and "Railroad," for instance, the latter of which chugs along a la Lucinda Williams' "Joy" (and feature an incredible vocal from Kasey). Other highlights include the rollicking "I Got You Now" and the absolutely divine "You Make Me Sing" ... plus "Dangerous," which - as all the songs here, actually - features a hypnotic vocal. Perhaps that's why the change in sonic colourings almost seems a moot point. Her voice is such an expressive instrument that, regardless of context, you come away entranced. I do, at any rate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lonely don't live here anymore
Kasey is back with a new cd.She's stepped farther way from her country and alt/country roots and approached the rock-tinged, singer/songwriter sound with her considerable song writing talents intact. She's accomplished this with more success and sincerity than either the Dixie Chicks or Allison Moorer did in their recent releases.

Editorial Review

Who can fault an artist who so clearly embraces a one-planet, one-people worldview? Someone who recruits guest instrumentalists from every hemisphere to underscore his fondness for multiculturalism and convey his wish for global harmony? You can't help but admire Yanni, the Greek keyboardist/composer, even while acknowledging such nobility does not always translate into deeply satisfying music. On this, the audio-only component of his third made-for-television concert production (filmed in 2005 in Las Vegas), Yanni continues in his adopted role of True Egalitarian, playing a few bars to open a piece, then fading into the background to let other musicians (on violin, trumpet, sax, didgeridoo, hammer dulcimer, even keyboards) command the music's flow. A lovely gesture, but one that often results in extended soloing that sidetracks, even derails, the focus of the music. (Consider "Playtime," where Ming Freeman plays the jazzy piano solo, and the disc's previously unreleased track, "The Storm," pairing violinists Samvel Yervinyan and Sayaka Katsuki in a showy duet that is reminiscent of something from Bond.) Thus while the musicianship is first-rate, the production is superb, and some tracks are terrific (too bad "Standing in Motion" fades out so quickly), this disc is more about the jamming and less about staying on compositional task. Likely this project will be better appreciated in its DVD version, where the staging and artist interaction is on display. Meanwhile, some longtime fans may be left yearning for a day when Yanni will step up to his keyboards, drop the hammer, and let his own muse rock. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular!
The passion you see and feel in Yanni and his music touches you like no other. I especially enjoyed the way he incorporated the singers as part of the whole sound. As a lot of music the instruments take a backseat to the vocalist. This DVD is incredible! Buy 2 because you'll wear out the first one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro To MEHDl
I've always enjoyed Yanni and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of MEHDl (pronounced medie). After an online search I found their site (S00THINGMUSIC,C0M) and listened to the samples...
5-0 out of 5 stars Truely magnificent!Bravo Yanni

Editorial Review

This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ("One of These Nights," "Hotel California") still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2004 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, "Hole in the World," Don Henley's response to September 11, feels just as empty and entitled as "Get Over It," the band's previous state-of-the-union message (from which the newer song represents a philosophical 180-degree turn). But for those seeking an overview of this Southern California juggernaut's successes, as well as telling comments from band members--mostly Henley and Frey--in a well-designed booklet, Read more
