Editorial Review

Julio Iglesias--he of the endearing Latin accent, endless-summer suntan, and stunning charisma--could make "Mary Had a Little Lamb" sound sexy, so it's no surprise that the 11 selections here smolder with the approximate heat of high noon in his native Madrid. What may be surprising to longtime listeners, though, is the range of songs he chose to cover. While "It's Impossible," the Perry Como hit with the famously pretty-sad melody, comes across an obvious choice and benefits from a swooning yet sure-footed performance, two Foreigner classics, "I Want to Know What Love Is" and "Waiting for a Girl Like You," seem somehow beneath our debonair ladykiller. Still, smothered by his signature passion, they play like entirely new songs--less earnest and searching, more insistent and sweet. Such is the case with Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" and, to some extent, the Cars' "Drive"; instead of sounding like lite-FM retreads, they become heated extensions of his Julio-ness. Older hits--"This Guy's in Love with You," "The Most Beautiful Girl"--benefit from a certain effortlessness; these are numbers pre-dipped in the knee-weakening romance Julio specializes in. Overall, it's a modern/classic commingling that proves what millions of women worldwide have suspected for decades: where practitioners of pulse-quickening, fantasy-fueling vocals are concerned, there is no equal. 4-0 out of 5 stars Effortless Passion
There's something irresistible about Julio Iglesia's singing. He exudes an effortless passion of romance in nearly every song he touches. It's no surprise that finally he has released an album concentrating solely on romantic tunes. However, at first glance, some of his choices might seem out of character. With two Foreigner songs, "I Want To Know What Love Is" and "Waiting For A Girl Like You", Julio injects dreamy casualness that begs a listen from worldly lovers.Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talking" has a spirited freshness and the Bee Gees, "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?" is a completely new interpretation. There might be a temptation to classify these songs as pure elevator backtracks, but Iglesia never falters in his quality. The only question here is why it took him so long to produce an album concentrating solely on romantic classics. There is no doubt there will be a follow up and his fans are already anxiously waiting.

5-0 out of 5 stars He never fails to amaze me.
How can you not love this man,his voice is so romantic and this cd is superbly produced.I have the Japan Version with an extra track and the sound quality is astonishing...highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Si es Julio...es Bueno!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cornerstone Of All That Came Behind It
My title says it all.As a music historian, the release of this album is one of my top 10 moments in the history of recorded music, because it did something that only a handful of other albums ever did - it changed the entire industry.Until 1967, albums by "youth-oriented" artists were rarely more than collections of singles and never seemed to have much flow or continuity - in other words, nothing more than miniature greatest hits collections. But on June 1 of 1967, the Beatles changed everything.Other artists were expanding their horizons as well - the Beach Boys had released Pet Sounds, a bold experiment of sounds mixed with songwriting we had never realized was possible from a young artist. But the mammoth success of Sergeant Pepper would make other albums like this marketable - and it would lead to other recording stars to become artists as much as entertainers.

One star is waaaaaaaaaaaay too much for this funny fart CD,
1-0 out of 5 stars yes, you read right: ONE star
Hi dear muzak lovers, yes, you read right: ONE star for this CD is ab-so-lutely enough, no actually it is over the top for try listening to this junk without dangerous mind-altering substatiaries and you're left out in the cold. NO ONE should even dare to attempt to digest this collection of laughable concoctions like Fixin' a Whole (drug related), She's leaving her home (because of a drug habit) and Within and without you (sexual lust caused by bad trip), Good morning (a wake up call to use drugs), LSD (need I say even more????)

1-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Billie Holiday Impersonation Ever!
Do you love ripoff artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Norah Jones? Does true originality disturb you and drive you to seek cover in the soft womb of corporate created fluff marketed as the real deal? Then you're in for a treat with this album! Not even Rich Little could do Billie better. Texture of voice AND delivery expertly stolen without a qualm, but without any of the icky sincerity and authentic pain of the original. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!
I first heard Madeleine Peyroux playing through the speakers in a Starbucks on a trip to Seattle. Her voice was magical and I just had to ask who it was. I love Billie Holiday and her style of singing is very similar. This cd is a wonderful collection of songs from Patsy Cline's "Walkin' after midnight" to Edith Piaf's "La vie en rose", you'll love every song. Her other cd "Careless Love" is also a wonderful collection. You can't go wrong with this cd, it's simply lovely.

5-0 out of 5 stars An impressive cohesive whole
With her flaming red hair and imposing good looks, Neko Case strikes an impressive pose, but that's nothing compared to the development of her singing and songwriting over the past few years. This album bathes her strong voice with echoing reverb, making her tales of love and loss seem even more apocalyptic. Case mixes country, folk and pop with an unusual deftness that sets her apart from the veritable army of female singer songwriters on todays music scene, and with backup from the likes of Calexico, one of the finest roots rock groups around, the music meshes very well with the lyrics.
5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful stuff..
"Alt-country" would indeed be a limiting description,none-the-less an accurate point of reference,as this artist is obviously drawing from past Country musicians. But make no mistake, this is not a tired retread thru the same-old same-old but rather an exceptional modern piece of music.I'm usually more inclined towards the Heavy than the twangy, but this is just so well written and catchy with a distinct melancholic cloud hanging over the proceedings, and this woman can SING.One of the few recent musicians that deserve that designation!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Country Noir" indeed - excellent purchase
After having this recommended to me as a hard-to-categorize album, I was lucky enough to stumble into a copy the next day.The beautifully produced, played, sung, and especially well written songs on this album are haunting and catchy at the same time. The album comes in at just about 35 mintues, which is perfect for a quiet listen while reading or driving around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trick Or Treat
This is a great and smart collection. Just look at the selection of songs you get, Monster Mash, Ghostbusters, Purple People Eater, The Addams family theme, Twilight Zone and my new favorite The Martian Hop. I never heard the Martian Hop before even though it's from the early 1960s, pretty catchy song. It's a great cd and unlike other compilations that have movie themes this one has the actual real legit songs. That's the real Monster Mash song by Bobby Picket, that's the real beginning to the Addams Family show and that's the real RayParker Jr. singing Ghostbusters. It would be nice if they had more songs but you'll still be glad you bought this cd when you have company over for a party come October or Halloween Night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Music Sung by the People that Made them Great!
A CD of fun, & silly Halloween music that you can enjoy because it's the recordings of the original singers, not the original singers brother's cousin's hairdresser's aunt.If you like Dr Demento type music, then you'll love this! My kids enjoy it as well. The 2 best songs are of course, Monster Mash and Martian Hop.Give it a try!

After seeing Mamma Mia in Las Vegas I purchased the ABBA Mamma Mia CD.Then I thought I would like to have the original songs and ordered the ABBA-Gold Greatest Hits.I enjoy it a lot; but I prefer the Mamma Mia CD which takes me back to the fun night of actually being in Las Vegas and seeing the musical.

ABBA is still going strong after all these years. Agnetha and Frida's voices are superb, especially in "Dancing Queen," one of their most famous songs.
5-0 out of 5 stars ABBA Rules
Music is relative, and the group Abba set a standard. Not everyone is an Abba fan, thank God. But for those who appreciate them, they are definitely here to stay. For me, Abba didn't begin to fully blossom until the last albums. THE VISITORS and SUPER TROUPER were excellent examples of how much imagination they truely had. To me, everything else was a springboard for them to grow. It's too bad they stopped just as they were beginning to grow. At least they left a hint of true genius. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Some reviewers definitely did not have an open mind listening to this. How great to hear a familiar voice in a different sound element....just a guitar, a song associated with another great voice (what a challenge). Not a loser in the bunch...and you gotta love "the more you do its" nod to yesterday. She's not leavin' she's here to stay...FROM NOW ON!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sassy! Dazzling! Exciting! Daringly Brilliant!
Natalie Cole returns with her most adventurous exploration of personally admired compositions from Pop-Rock-R&B-Country Music's most prolific singer-songwriters she's had the pleasure to share the radio-chart spotlight with, throughout her brilliant career. Like her current Verve[and previously Capitol & Elektra]Records labelmate and radio-chart run comadre, Linda Ronstadt, Miss Cole is one of our very few and extraordinarily gifted artists who is daring and adventurous enough to risk everything careerwise by immersing her talent, and expanding her range, into an intense exploration of music from various genres and eras, other than her 'mainstream base' where her fans always expect her to not drift too far from. Milestone, after milestone album from Natalie Cole continues to rise and glow from the expansive musical ground she never denies she is inspired from - be it Rock, R&B, Jazz, Pop, Country - she possesses a rare vocal talent she easily transforms into an irressistably dazzling instrument of range and note. The 'main attraction' here is Miss Cole's marvelous vocal instrument! Miss Cole, visually, is more beautiful than ever - which makes for a very attractive album cover. I've always felt Shelby Lynne was robbed by unintelligent and tasteless radio station programmers of a monsterous radio/chart hit of her original, "Leavin'" - but Natalie revives this brilliance with a personally stamped cover version, adding a whole new "WOWzer" twist of her own! Natalie's "Leavin" comes from another remarkably different dimension - it's a vocalized mini-movie drama demanding notice of its own! Another smoldering track is "The Man With The Child In His Eyes", Natalie's most assured Power-Pop ballad to date. "The More You Do It" - which she teasingly introduces as for the "Old School"[referring to Music, of course]ends with that delicious catchy phrasing chorus of "From Now On!...From Now On!...From Now On!" reminds us that this is the NATALIE of "THIS WILL BE" Fame you're listening to and enjoying in all her everlasting glory all at once and forever more! It's also her affectionate and joyful tribute to the [first] songwriting team of Marvin Yancy-Chuck Jackson, she was blessed to have worked with at the outset of her career. Bright'n sassy horn sections accompany Natalie's sassiest and dazzling vocals in all the right and perfect places on various tracks throughout this well balanced album. We must thank Verve Records for allowing exceptional artists the freedom and opportunity to record their own music, fulfill their musical vision to full content, and offer us such outstanding collages of musical expression they feel moved to display and share - especially when the record company giants have become shamelessly indifferent to both these artists and the fans who built their financial institutions. I personally experienced the excitement of "living"[as we all do at times] some of these classic songs such as "Don't Say Goodnight" - "Old Man" - "Day Dreaming" - "Lovin' Arms"[much covered, but in the most endearing and heartfelt version for the first time ever, right here] - during their popular first time around in my teen years, but, COLE's sensitive, affectionate, and inspiring versions mystify and contribute a profound new dimension to the wonder and impact of each song's respective and timeless impact. NATALIE COLE remains an illustrious vocalist, and, with the astounding imagery and colors her voice displays, she easily demonstrates that no matter what genre of music she is inspired to explore, they are all inseparable.

There is something about Bocelli's voice that is completely revealed, raw, yet pure. His songs climax and grow.I have some opera fans who snub his voice because they say it not purely classical, yet that is what I love about him.He is different not completely one or the other- just a beautiful honest voice.5-0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough Album
This was the CD that bridged the gap between pop and opera. This is something that no other opera singer was able to do, certainly not on such a grandly successful scale. With his singing diversity of style (alternating between a bluesy pop voice and a clear and powerful operatic one), Andrea Bocelli did a fantastic job of putting together a great collection of first-rate songs and adding his own tremendous voice to them, a simply stunning achievement. Many of the songs are deeply moving with breathtaking moments. If you like Bocelli, you must give Sarah Brightman a chance, another opera diva with an accessible reportoir who does the pop thing very well. Read more

Editorial Review

Though Amos Lee's music is frequently described as a fusion of folk and soul, such an equation fails to reflect the singular artistry of this impressive debut. Like labelmate Norah Jones (who guests on two cuts), the Philadelphia singer-songwriter recognizes the power of simplicity, distilling an emotional essence that cuts across categories. The opening of his "Seen It All Before" echoes Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"; the stunning "Arms of a Woman" channels Otis Redding's "I've Got Dreams to Remember"; "Give It Up" cuts a classic Bill Withers groove; "Black River" has the sound of an age-old spiritual; and the closing "All My Friends" follows Van Morrison into the mystic. Throughout the song cycle, the bare-bones arrangements behind Lee's vocal flutter reinforce an organic unity that transcends genre. For all of the debts he owes to the music of the 1960s and '70s, the results sound timeless rather than retro. In his cautionary "Soul Suckers," Lee sings that "nothing is more powerful than beauty in a wicked world"--and proceeds to prove it. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Mix In 20 Years!
I have no idea why people are so hung up on Pete's first album Musicforthemorningafter. Artists change, mature and hopefully never get stuck in a rut. Pete has proven he has indeed taken a huge leap forward. I thought it would be hard to improve on one of the best live sounding albums around, Live From New Jersey, as the balance of everything on that album was near perfect! But Pete did not rest on his past and proved it wasn't a fluke and has engineered one of the best sounding albums I've heard since the 80s. The album is extremely diverse and shows the many tools that Pete possesses. It goes from super pop hits like For Us and Alive, to a southern twang with The Man, to electro with Georgie Boy, to a mellow Jim Croce and James Taylor like vibe with Ice Age. With every song you'll swear you hear a little bit of your favorite bands over the years. This is indeed Pete's best work to date and shows the best is yet to come.

Editorial Review

There are those who will tell you that Il Divo, the multinational quartet of sharp-dressed crooners, synthesize Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion to concoct something worse. And they will not be entirely incorrect. Yet it's hard to argue with a sensation that has entrenched itself so deeply so fast, and a first spin of Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars At Least Their Hair has Strong Roots...
There is not one tune on this CD that sounds remotely close to 'Whip It'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Divine Singers-- Again
This album doesn't contain quite the variety of the first album. All of the pieces have an unprecedented sweep of lush romanticism such as was not heard even on the first album. These songs must have been so carefully picked, they suit the styles and voices of this pop/opera band soooooooo well. If possible, the four voices blend together better and with more power. The songs flow and soar as never before. There aren't any words to express how much I appreciate this group and just what I think of them. They are a God send, in times of music that is so often not worth being called music. Ancora is truly music from heaven and is brought by divine voices and truly incredible singers. (Urs is still a work of masculine beauty without compare) But if you liked the first album, Ancora is a MUST.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Cd's Of Our Time
Epic and anthemic, and yet every track can be listened to without the others. It tells a great story and has a great set of characters.Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming particularly stick out in my mind.If you don't have it already, get it.

4-0 out of 5 stars You tell 'em
OK, fair enough, Green Day were the first band with the guts to actually call the Bush administration out for what it is (or what they think it is, anyways).I'm puzzled how people can say the lyrics don't even make sense - I have no problem figuring out what the songs are about! That's the lyrical review - 5 stars.I'm not a fan of punk rock so I can't fairly review this CD in musical terms, so I gave it the 3 stars of middle ground. The average # stars is therefore 4 stars.(I wonder if the people who can't figure out the meaning of the lyrics, will be able to follow that.)
1-0 out of 5 stars Brainless, mindless trash...if you like Greenday...you must be a retard.
Green Day is a completely talentless pop rock band.Ths type of music takes no talent what so ever. Its three chords played on a guitar...and nothing more. Then they put those three chords through a bunch of distortion and fuzz boxes to mask the lack of talent.Well Greenday, you little bas.ards didn't fool me with your noisy guitar pop.I know a lack of talent when I hear it, and Green Day are absolutely talentless at playing their instruments. And what are these lyrics anyway?Half the time you can't even understand what these punks are saying because the music is such a noisy guitar pop racket. And whenever the lyrics are audible, they sound stu.pid and don't make any sense."The New Media"?"The Redneck Agenda"?Lyrics like that are such a bunch of pseudo intellectual nonsense that its almost laughable.Green Day are a bunch of juvenile delinquents who probably aren't even old enough to vote, let alone know anything about politics. And the harder they try to be intelligent, the more idiotic they sound.SO Green Day, please stop writing those pseudo intellectual "social commentary" tunes that take no talent. You don't sound smart. You don't sound intelligent.Every word you sing on your pseudo intellectual "rock operas" just shows your ignorance abou t the topic you're writing about.ANd Green Day fans...how can you actually enjoy this noisy, three chord, guitar pop racket? How can you like listening to a bunch of bratty juveniledelinquents from the suburbs shooting their mouths off about politics when their knowledge is limited to riding skateboards, smoking joints, and playing 3 chords on a guitar?I'm begining to think that in order to be a Greenday fan, one must not have a brain cell. After all, that's the only way one could listen to this brainless, mindless cr.ap.Come on Green Day fans, this CD isn't a five star unless you're reta.rded. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening to it!
From the first chords of this CD I knew this was going to be different.By Track three I had determined that this was the CD I had hoped would follow up their first.Don't get me wrong, I love JOC but this album goes back to the relestless faith of "Flood".The plaintive cries for God's help and grace resonate within this piece. No, every lyric is not pop and uplifting but then neither is every Psalm. This is a journey through hurt and pain to a beautiful afterlife. This is the Christian journey.
3-0 out of 5 stars Different, not great, but worthy enough
Jars' latest album, as all their other albums, pales in comparison to their self titled album.Work is a sweet song, really catchy and fun, with great lines like "I have no fear of drowning; it's the breathing that's taking all this work."The rest of the album just doesn't cut it.They lack really powerful substance in their lyrics.Good Monsters, sounds a little bit like something from The Click Five and Mirrors and Smoke sounds like Johnny Cash.Oh My God is a good song. This isn't a great offering by Jars, but good enough. The are no songs on this album as good as the Valley Song or Jealous Kind.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Epic Christian Rock Album
I love the first Jars of Clay cd, but I would have to say that this one is the best! The crunchy rocker "Work" sets the tone. I love the line "I have no fear of drowning, it is the breathing that's taking all this work." How true!

Editorial Review

Longtime listeners have seen it coming:it was only a matter of time before John Mayer dropped the pop star pretense and proved he could really bring it. Chalk it up to one too many Dave Matthews comparisons, or the cupcake-sweet residue stuck to his image after the success of "Your Body Is a Wonderland"--but something convinced Mayer it was time to take him game to the next level. With help from studio pros Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino, he succeeds on
