5-0 out of 5 stars Sutherland is Amazing
The first thing I ever heard by Sutherland was the Bel Raggio and I was floored. The voice sounded huge but I wondered if it was a technicians trick.I heard her on stage many times.Recordings do NO JUSTICE to the hugeness of the voice. Her diction was weak and her line sometimes droopy but the warm, huge, fexible voice was amazing.I don't think she or anyone else was the Voice or Singer of the century- no voice or singer could sing every role in the repetoire.Sutherland could no more sing Brunnhilde than Flagstad could sing Lucia.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Phenomenal Historic Recording Newly Minted
There is not much to add to the encomiums of previous reviews. This is one of the most astounding vocal recitals, if not THE most astounding, ever recorded. It caught one of history's greatest singers in her absolute prime, before the well-known defects - mushy diction, cloudy tone, sliding into notes, enervated rhythmic sense - began to compromise her singing.(Well, ok, the diction here is not crystal clear, but mostly quite acceptable and MUCH better than it later became.)
4-0 out of 5 stars Canary in the silver mine
This is a good compilation, and Sutherland was captured at the right time, before she went completely mushy dictionwise and lost her vocal sheen. The remastered sound is very good, too, spectacular for a recording from the 1960s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Music Collection
I purchased this CD on iTunes and I love it. Martha's CD collection is very tasteful and the music is great background music. I'm not a big fan of Christmas music sung by pop stars, and so I avoid most modern releases, but this CD is all classical. Particularly love the song sung by II Divo and Placido Domingo. This is a classical album sure to please everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice and Intimate
This is a wonderful CD.I agree with Martha Stewart's notes that this music will be great at a social gathering like a dinner party.I feel this music would work well in an intimate shop or restaurant, but would not work well in a larger retail establishment or a busy restaurant. In my opinion, the softer music would be drowned by the surrounding noise. For those people who like their music "traditional" and "straight forward" this album is beautiful. She has put together a perfect holiday CD.If you this collection and the presentation of the music, I highly suggest looking at John Tesh's Christmas CDs.His music follows a similar style. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It is a great CD
I get this item and I can say is great, if you really want to get an idea about the vienna boys choirswork, you have to get this, you can admire the soloist voice, Emanuel Cencic, he has an outstanding voice, principally the track "let the bright querubin" but in general is a great compilation, you can stop listening.

3-0 out of 5 stars Found it to lack real depth
The songs are nice and the music pleasant to listen to, but the titles are fairly short and there is something missing. I just didn't find it to be very moving, perhaps it's just the recording.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, but not what I was looking for
I bought this album to explore more tracks by Hildegard after listening to one of her songs on an anthology. This music crosses centuries, languages, and religions, I feel.I am not a Christian, and the reason I listen to Georgian Chant is to study, because it focuses my thoughts exponentially. It completely drowns out the noise of the world and helps to gather my ideas. This did not get 5 stars because it wasn't what I was looking for.I wanted to hear tracks with a mixed gender choir but this album only goes from single male/male choir to single female/female choir, on alternating tracks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding music and performances!
The music in this CD is simply outstanding! I was very surpised when I bought this CD and discovered that it surpasses many other more "colourful" recordings of Hildegard's music (regardless of the price.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Hildegard von Bingen: Heavenly Revelations~ Hildegard of B
To the modern ear and mind Hildegard of Bingens sounds very different. There are no instruments and the vocals are sung in unison and not as seperate to vocals but united as one. This might sound simplistic and many would say that because she lacked formal training. This is based on feelings rather logic and one can sense that they are jelous of her natural ability to write music. The lyrics are amazing, the vocals are not as easy to sing as they sound and Hillegard of Bingen was and is still today an amazing composer and lyricist. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Late-period Fiedler, still worthwhile
Most of Fiedler's Pops Christmas albums feature recordings done for RCA Victor in 1959. This collection is unique in that the marjority of the pieces were done at a 1970 session for the Deutsche Grammophon label. (The two Bach pieces were recorded in 1976, also for DG.) It therefore features a different group of musicians and a maestro who was older and, perhaps, a bit less sprightly than the Fiedler of 1959.5-0 out of 5 stars An Old Favorite
This album contains the same selections as RCA's "A Christmas Festival," plus two additional Bach selections. And it costs...less! The highlight of the album is Leroy Anderson's "A Christmas Festival," the most creative, thrilling instrumental medley of Christmas tunes ever arranged, and of course Fiedler's performance with the Boston Pops is definitive (even though it leaves out the pipe organ at the very end). Other highlights include Anderson's ever popular "Sleighride," the Pops' signature arrangement of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," and a shimmering, enchanting "White Christmas." A lovely combination of popular and classical orchestral selections for the holdays. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas celebration for Classical Music Lovers only
The cover of this 2 disc set features half a dozen of the great voices of our time:Pavarotti, Domingo, Joan Sutherland, Renata Tebaldi, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Leontyne Price. However, selections by these soloists comprise only 2/5 of the set, the rest being choral and orchestral works. 3-0 out of 5 stars This may be a good album; the marketing ploy is shameless
I have not listened specifically to this edition, but I can tell you with near absolute certainty that this is a classic example of marketing at its most shameless. This is nothing more than a reissue of "The Greatest Christmas Show on Earth", but with a different title! (Something similar was done back in 1963, when the Harry Simeone Chorale's ever-popular 1958 LP, "Sing We Now of Christmas", was retitled and re-released as "The Little Drummer Boy"--its current CD title--, but at least the advertising there seemed slightly more honest.)5-0 out of 5 stars Touch of angle, touch ofheart
If you enjoy opera or choir, this is a must collection. The Choir of King's College probably knows the secret how to make the listener flying among thousands of Christmas candles. Pavarotti's opening is so mightythat remind people, this year, to be courageous and to believe (not limited from religious sense but the humanity perspective.) And his Mill Cherubini and Panis Angelicus can vibrate one's tear from the heart, reflecting to the tragedy and the war in 2001. As for the sopranos, this collection is a Jewel. Joan Sutherland's Deck The Hall and The Twelve Days of Christmas bring out the merry atmosphere of the season and cheer one's mood to celebrate. Also her Virgin's Slumber Song has so much beauty and grace . Kanawa's Ave Maria is so dramatic performed that perfectly drawn out the human's longing for love and protection. All the orchestra also have done a splendid job. The arrangement is perfect there is no dull moment from the beginning to the end. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This time out, Baby Einstein shines a light on the Christmas tree andpromises peace in the nursery, if not on earth. Familiar carols like"Jingle Bells," "Silent Night," and "Joy to the World" undergo theexpected twinkly xylophone treatment, but a clutch of others getswept off to the Caribbean (the steel drum-studded "Twelve Days ofChristmas"), the plains of Africa (the earthy, percussive "We Wish You aMerry Christmas"), and additional exotic locales. Afteryuletide stopoffs in France, Japan, and Germany, the "Holiday Concert" part of the disc takes over, featuring brainier but still festive selections fromBach, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky. This mid-CD switchoverbarely registers--each of the 28 mini-tracks (most average a minute anda half) does its part to stir visions of sugarplums and furthers thepossibility of a truly silent night for the Santa's-lap set. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not very interesting
Purchased for my 1 year old at 6.99 in Target, thought it would be a good deal, but it is putting us all to sleep.Wish I would have read the reviews first. This is not going to be something we play for the holiday.

1-0 out of 5 stars worst Baby Einstein yet!!!!!!!!
Overall very disappointing - when you see the original baby einstein, it is very basic ... but you can see how a baby would find it interesting. The images are constantly changing, the puppets are cute, but everything is relevant. But you also relize that this is a pretty primitive video ... done in someone's basement (practically). The Baby Santa is worse than this.
2-0 out of 5 stars Baby Einstein disappointment
We are Really big fans of the Baby Einstein Collection, and have all the CD's, which are wonderful. So, happily when I bought this one for my 15 month old, I was looking forward to the same quality of songs, but this one is redundant (3 versions of Jingle Bells), and boring. There is so much fantastic Christmas music, and the makers could've done sooo much better. Would return it if I could. ... Read more

I am one of those people who hates to wake up to the annoying buzz of an alarm clock. This CD provides the most soothing, yet effective wake up call I've ever come across. The recording of Pachelbel's "Canon" is the best I have heard on any CD.This particular recrding is also perfect for a wedding processional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome voices
This CD is eloquent and so magnetically alluring. It begins with the ever so popular (sopranist) Ms. Leontyne Price's "Ave Maria" and finishes beautifully with the entire operatic voices of the English Choir in the song "Amen".I'm always floored by the voices of Ms. Leontyne Price and Mr. Jose Carrera. The instrumentalists and the great composing of many of the fine songs listed on this CD is superb; well job done by the conductors, very.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gigli Is A Wonderful Singer!
It's an honor for me to be "the first" to review this recording for Amazon. As "opera lovers" know, Gigli was "the greatest tenor in the world" for many years after the death of Caruso. If you haven't heard Gigli, a great treat is in store for you! He had "penache" and drama in the way he sang.Plus he had a beautiful tonal quality!I could go on and on but if you "pass this guy up" you'll be missing some beautiful and dramatic singing from a "world class" singing actor.

Editorial Review

Marian Anderson's rich contralto tinged with sadness touched thehearts of many and made her one of the most-loved American singers. She'sprobably best known for her spirituals on recordings made in the twilight of hercareer. In these good transfers, she sings an ample selection of those favoritesmade in her prime, the late 1930s; they're no less touching and made even morecompelling by the freshness of her voice, which is just as fresh in the Handel andBach arias from the Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CELEBRATE Marian Anderson's powerful, liberated voice with JOY!
On April 9, 1939, the voice of Marian Anderson shook my whole beingunforgettably. She began her concert by singing our nation's hymn, "Our Country 'Tis of Thee, Sweet Land of Liberty,"
5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless performances
Marian Anderson suffered from several circumstances, but always endured them, it appeared, with grace and dignity. She suffered from being black at a time when black persons were not taken seriously as classical artists, and she was simply not allowed to sing in many venues. She was forbidden the stage of the Metropolitan Opera until past her prime (1955).After she became an icon of the civil rights movement, her reputation as a singer became overshadowed. Miss Anderson's treatment by her own countrymen for much of her life was an abomination, but it had nothing to do with music.Modest as she was about all aspects of her life, I don't think she would want her artistry relegated to a footnote in social history!
4-0 out of 5 stars My favorite singer
This is a great CD.Despite the obvious technical limitations at the time of original recording, the sound quality on this CD is really good.I love Marian Anderson (as a contralto myself,I strive to be like her)and I think this CD does her justice. It's great to hear the range of her vocal talent. The combination of opera and spirituals is wonderful. The songs also vary in vocal range.I was happy to hear a collection of songs that showcased the strength of her voice at its lower and upper ends.Overall, I'd say this was an excellent CD. ...
