This cd and this amazing musician are an absolute must have for any music lover or music snob alike! Her voice is amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grace Incarnate
If there is one singer who has ever truly been able to master the singer's art of interpretation, this is her.She is a gift to music, I truly believe this. A few words, or glowing adjectives could not accurately describe the singing of a woman who epitomizes art.And music.Grace and beauty.5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare & Glorious Singer
This is a pretty good cross-section of Dame Janet's output from the prime of her career. There are few if any singers like her around today. There are many mezzos who can sing beautifully, with great articulation and finesse, but they lack the moral and musical integrity Dame Janet always brought to her singing. The voice is ardent, seeking, yearning, finding, exulting. Listen to the excerpt from "Dream of Gerontius" or the third of the "Sea Pictures" to see what I mean. Read more

Bartoli, in her musical journey defying all stereotypes, paints multi- dimensional vocal portraits of these Mozart characters. From the most delicate pianissimo to the grandest forte, this superb recording leaves you breathless. While others struggle with Come Scoglio's vocal gymnastics and Dove Sono's challenging legato, Bartoli uses her dark timbre, impeccable coloratura and passionate phrasing to create a kaleidoscope of luscious, wildly exciting sound. The fire of Mozart, the "romantic" composer, is brought to life. Occasional breathiness employed for dramatic purposes serves only to seduce the listener even more. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Great Mozart Recital
If I could own just ONE Mozart recital disc, it would be this one.(Though Renee Fleming's Mozart collection is superb as well). I believe that the two arias for Fiordiligi in COSI FAN TUTTE included here are among Bartoli's very finest recordings to date. But all of the arias on this CD are memorably performed. Please buy "Mozart Portraits"!

...the day Cecilia Bartolli was born. Talk about blessed -- all this and such a versatile voice, too. Mozart would have been delighted.5-0 out of 5 stars The Best"Exultate, Jubilate"
"Exultate, Jubilate" seems to be one of those works which every soprano records at some point in her career. Among others, I've heard recordings by Barbara Bonney, Sumi Jo, and Kathleen Battle. But if I had to choose only one recording of "Exultate, Jubilate" to content myself for the rest of my life, it would definetly be this recording - Cecilia Bartoli's. She sings gloriously, with such an infectious joy that I've never heard in the others (Sumi Jo comes close, but still too careful and measured). The orchestration is also great - big and full of gusto, just like Cecilia's voice.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Selection, But...
...The Audio Quality is really not great.I bought this CD because I am new to classical, and the price was great!100 songs for 25 bucks, thats like 25 cents a song, most songs are 1 dollar or more. Now I know why it's cheaper. The audio quality isn't that good.I imported the entire collection to my computer using Apple Lossless, and it sounded fuzzy, not crisp, with background noise, and sounded like compressed music, cutting off the frequency response.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have classical music set!
Classical music is, by far, my favorite type of music. It can make you happy or sad, it can make you laugh or cry, and it can make you want to fall asleep or get up and dance. This 6-disc set is a must-have for and classical music-lover! It has all the great composers like Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, and Pachelbel. Some great songs include: Canon In D(Pachelbel), Morning: Peergynt(Grieg), Adagio For Strings(Barber), Cavatina(Myers), and much, much more. Every classical song you can think of is on here and the sound quality is great. So if you're looking for a good classical music CD, this set is all you need. Be prepared to be blown away! ... What a delightful surprise this 2 disc album was and I'm not a big fan of Christmas music.I loved all the selections and felt they were well performed. This is a true "must have" for any Christmas collection.Superior to many other compliations on the market. This one is a keeper! It is the one album I'll pick first to listen to after Thanksgiving.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
Many, many classic recordings of favorite christmas carols and pieces.I must say that the reviewer who said that Leontyne Price's vibrato was "too wide" should have his ears examined.Leontyne Price recorded her classic Christmas album (which, by the way, any lover of Christmas music or anyone who wants to hear pristine singing, should own) in the 1960's when she was in her absolute prime.A fast spinning vibrato is indicative of a NATURAL, healthy sounding voice, which is quite the opposite of what most uninformed choral conductors ask for these daysOK, I'll get off my soap box now! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars CORRECTIONS!!!
I too have not yet gotten this new Gerontius from the LSO label and am rating it on both hope and admiration for Davis and the LSO, but it is necessary for now to correct several misprints in the Amazon listing above. The conductor for this performance of The Dream of Gerontius by Edward Elgar is the esteemed Sir Colin Davis, who is slowly doing what he should have been doing years ago, taking on England's greatest composer with England's greatest orchestra. David Rendall and Anne Sofie von Otter are two of the soloists with this work, written for tenor, contralto, bass, and chorus by Elgar just as he was rounding into the peak of his career. I personally rate Gerontius right up there was the other all-time romantic religious greats: Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Mendelssohn's Elijah, and Brahms's German Requiem. Looking forward to hearing this new presentation, since the one I prefer, by Boult, is entering hoary sonic old age (and the performance with the definitive Angel, Dame Janet Baker, under Barbirolli, is even older). For those with SACD capability, by the way, wait as I am for the SACD version, to be released next month here at Amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Won't Play
I ordered two copies of this CD, one for me and one for my daughter. It will not play on my CD player, a Technics model. We have never had anything like this happen before. My spouse took the CD to a neighbor's home and was able to play it on his player. On the strength of that, I gave my daughter her copy.I have no idea whether she has tried to play it or not.My guess is that she won't until next Christmas. She is overworked and that won't be a high priority. In case you are wondering, our CD player continues to work well, playing all our other CDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the finest
Like many others on this page, I grew up listening to the original recording. It always started the Christmas season in our home. How wonderful to find it again on a beautifully remastered CD! Can't wait to send a copy to my parents. There are many, many great tracks here, but quite simply, you should own this recording for "Away in a Manger". It is magnificent, soaring, tender, almost heartbreakingly beautiful. This arragement has stayed with me for 40 some odd years. I can assure you that you'll never hear a finer version. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I was there....
In August or September of 1963 I received a call from my high school music teacher. They were looking for a small audience to act as acoustic padding to soak up some of the reverberation of the Salt Lake Tabernacle.Get down there quick, he said, Bernstein's recording with the Choir.I went and sat through the first of two sessions for this recording. It was fascinating.Bernstein came out and greeted us remarking that he always remembered his concert in the Tabernacle because "it was the loudest applause he had ever heard" (the Tabernacle itself lending to that amplification). He launched right into "Joy to the World" making adjustments to the freshly finished arrangement. All the arrangers were present. The ink wasn't dry on their manuscripts. The NYP would sight read through them a couple of times, Bernstein would adjust, and they'd do a take or two.The Choir had been preparing for many weeks. The sessions weren't entirely smooth.Bernstein was an entirely different personality than their long experience with Ormandy had been.Bernstein demanded precision. He usually got it by the final take. The album was released in less then two months.Eventually it "went gold" -- unusual for 'classical' albums of the time.I started playing it in October, 1963.There hasn't been a Christmas since that these wonderful arrangements and the memories of that summer haven't graced our family's celebration. It's advent on CD was late but most welcome. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time classical favorites
I reach for this CD time and again. It is both relaxing and upbeat. I like every recording on this CD...even if they are selections and not the complete works. You cannot go wrong this this purchase!!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Bells! The Bells!
I give this album an average rating as it does what it sets out to do which is give the average listener of classical music various average samples of average performances of great classical compositions.Albums such as these are always a great way to explore various or specific classical music styles with pieces that are usually not too intrusive to the common ear. The only downside of these albums is that they unfortunately, more often than not, introduce a new listner to only the most elementary of performances and leave them believing that all others sound as the ones they just heard when such differences in most cases are huge ones. I chose to review this particular album after hearing the Sonnerie "Bells" de Ste Genevieve on this album (originally composed by the unfortunately obscure Marin Marais) as it is a perfect example of what I am trying to convey.

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrated
It is extremely frustrating to not be able to listen to this recording and compare it to others. Also there is nothing said about what language this is recorded in.The cover makes one think it might be in German, but there is nothing that says.It is extrememly important to have adequate information about a product if one is considering it.The write up of this product stinks. The reviewers rave on about how great it is, but I cannot learn if it is in English or German, or what it sounds like compared to other recordings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saul: Handel's Oratorio Becomes Dramatic Opera
Though there are thankfully several very fine recordings of 'Saul', one of Handel's most successful 'operatic oratorios', this new release with Ren Jacobs conducting the Concerto Kln and RIAS-Kammerchor Berlin is by far the most intense and dramatic of the competition.Jacobs' style meshes perfectly with the Handel score and his tasteful embellishments for once enhance the drama rather than just stealing focus as brilliant playing. And his understanding of the choral music, which is so central to this work, is as fine as we are likely to hear.

This isn't an oratorio in the Handelian sense, but a series of cantatasfor various days from Christmas to Epiphany. Bach's music is loaded with treats:an echo aria for soprano and oboe; a "pastoral" sinfonia; bravuraarias for tenor with flute and bass with trumpet; a giddy soprano-bass duet; atransporting lullaby for alto. Then there are the choruses, featuring theMonteverdi Choir at their best: exuberant full-orchestra choruses in parts oneand three; a lilting triple-time chorus with horns in part four; the joyfulskittering chorus in part five; and the triumphant opening and closing of partsix (with spectacular trumpet solos). John Eliot Gardiner's direction isvigorous; the soloists, the best group you'll find on CD, include a terrificyoung Anne Sofie von Otter. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gardiner does it again
Once again I have purchased a Gardiner disk based on his reputation only, and have been completely satisfied.I love Bach and I enjoy Gardiner's interpretations, so how could I go wrong. The choir and orchestra maintain the energy and intensity throughout the entire recording.I was particularly impressed with mezzo-soprano Anne Sophie von Otter and soprano Nancy Argenta. Both are favourites of Gardiner (see his recordings of Bach's St. Matthew Passion and B minor Mass) and are fast becoming favourites of mine.
5-0 out of 5 stars an essential part of my yearly Christmas experience
It surprises me that a number of people here have given this splendid recording negative reviews, but that is , I guess, proof that people's tastes and expectations are different.
3-0 out of 5 stars Speed or glory?
I really love Gardiner's Missa Solemnis (Beethoven) and his Nozze di Figaro, but when it comes to Bach he seems to suffer under some dogma on how the music should be played. I never get used to these short of breath rhythms, frantic tempos, although I find this version not less agreeable than Harnoncourt, Jacobs or Suzuki. In our time, baroque music is played faster and faster and sounds more and more like rock music, excused by original instruments and so-called historical information. Now and then Gardiners musicality wins over his dogmatism on Bach, and the music sounds nice, but these instances are unfortunately too rare on this recording. When will it be understood that the spirit of the baroque era was taking courtly elegance and dignity for granted? If you listen to Gardiner's Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen (Let your glory be sung out, oh God), you may understand what I mean; which glory for the Lord can it be at that speed? I don't think Bach was in such a hurry; I don't think people of the baroque era felt glory as a matter of speed; that is rather the spirit of our rock & rap days; when it comes to speed Gardiner wins the race. I agree with some reviewers below, that Richter made a great interpretation of this Christmas oratorio, but I consider Jochum's version from 1973 (out of print) even better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh stuff --- for Christmas, anyway.
Christmas music is, for the most part, terribly clich --- quadruply so if you're a musician of any flavor. So I suspect that many Boston Symphony/Pops musicians are weary of playing the tunes on this album. But I'm pretty confident in saying that this album is the 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Pops Companion CD
When it comes to Christmas and the Boston Pops, it's easy to wonder if this ensemble really needs another Christmas recording. We have multiple discs with the great Fiedler renditions of holiday music, and there are two fine discs under the direction of Conductor Laureate John Williams. Keith Lockhart has also released a holiday music disc. Why another? Well, when it comes to the Pops, creativity and reinvention are two of their trademarks, so this ensemble can always be counted on for something unique and enjoyable, and this newest Christmas CD SLEIGH RIDE will become a beloved part opf the Pops Christmas music library.

5-0 out of 5 stars great Stokowski
The Bach transcriptions written by Stokowski are among the most exciting presentations of Bach's music in the classical music repertoire. For one just hearing Bach for the first time this is a great introduction. For the serious listener it is pure joy. These, however, are not necessarily for the Bach purist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knockin on Heaven's Door
One of the greatest recordings in the cannon - even better due to the spectacular mix on this remastered issue. This soul-baring music must be heard, and heard at top, almost painful volume to realize how transcendent these transcriptions really are - earth-shaking and primal. Stokowski was one of the all-time, all-time greats - and to my ear - this recording is his best ever.

Franz Joseph Haydn happens to be one of my very favorite composers. His oratorios and masses are indeed very special."The Seasons" finds dear Haydn at his very very best.It is a work with splendid vocal and chorus writing along with masterful writing also for the orchestra with all melding together to form a masterpiece that fully exploits the attributes of the Classical period of so-called classical music as well as being a harbinger of the Romantic period of Classical Music to come (especially its descriptive side of music). In this recording, Rene Jacobs and his forces do Haydn proud providing a marvelous performance of this great work.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Fresh "Listen" to a Classic Work
The one disclaimer I will make before I begin this review--and it's an important one--is that I have not hear John Elliot Gardiner's "The Seasons," which should be comparable to Rene Jacobs's in many ways. That said, I will proceed to opine that if you know just about any modern-instruments version of this choral-music gem--well, you don't really know the work. Haydn was supposed to say in his latter years that he had just learned how to use the wind instruments and now, doggone it (I'm paraphrasing) "I must leave this world." Jacobs will instantly show you what Haydn meant. This "Seasons" is chock-full of especially piquant utterances from the winds, especially oboe and bassoons (including contrabassoon), which Haydn cleverly uses to portray birds, beasts, thunderstorms, bagpipes: never has the ingenuity and downright beauty of Haydn's orchestral mastery been clearer. That goes for strings and brass as well. Flying insects, country fiddles, hunting horns: Haydn may simply be mimicking the coloristic use of instruments he learned from hearing works like "Israel in Egypt" while in London, but how wonderfully he adapts these sounds to an expanded late-eighteenth-century orchestra.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have album for trombonists
No instrument blends as well with one another as the trombone, and these four trombonists are among the best at what they do.Joseph Alessi, Scott Hartman, Mark Lawrence, and Blair Bollinger all exhibit great musicality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth buying.
I too must agree that these four gentlemen have produced a very fine album that covers a wide variety of genres. They had obviously put a lot of work into these particlular pieces and, even though all of them are branchingout into solo careers, manage to work well as a group. My favourites arethe Haydn, Serocki and No more Blues, even though (dare I say it) I prefersome interpretations by other quartets (eg. Triton Trombone Quartet playingthe Serocki). I personally feel that the recording quality lets them down abit at times. The 2nd & 3rd trombones in particular sound a little'fuzzy' from time to time; whether that's the recording or perhaps theirhorn I can't say. Nevertheless I have been inspired once again to practicediligently upon listening to this CD. It's worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars These guys are trombone studs!
Other players in my college trombone section kept recommending this CD to me, so I finally ordered it, and I'm very glad I finally listened to them. This is a must-have for the serious trombonist. After all, these are fourof the not only best trombonists you'll hear, but best musicians also. "Achieved" is always a good one, along with the beautifullysimple "Three Equali" and "Trois Chansons."Who wouldhave thought that such fine soloists would perform so well as one unit, atrue ensemble sound.Where else can you hear a guy hold out a high D-flatfor about 20 seconds, or a trombonists squeelin high E's and double-highA's at the end?As a trombonist and aspiring performer, I say BUY IT! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You will be happy with this CD
this CD is very good quality. I would recommend it after wedding time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Wedding CD
This CD is going to be great for our wedding. It has many songs to use for the processional and recessional, including songs to play while guests are waiting.A great CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent variety of familiar songs
Much prettier versions of the bridal chorus than I've been able to find elsewhere (it doesn't just BANG it out), although I'm still probably not using the bridal chorus. Nice variety (Sleepers Awake is a nice little harp-y flute thing). Trumpet voluntary is otherwise known as The Prince of Denmark's March, FYI. The flute & strings version here is very nice. I also like this version of Mendelsshon's bridal march (from Midsummer Night's Dream).

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Christmas Music
I've owned this for years and never tire of it.Guests ALWAYS ask what I'm playing.I've purchased several copies as gifts. If you're sick of the stuff they play in malls and pine for some big, inspiring, classical arrangements, this is the CD for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Christmas CD!!
I love the traditional carols on this CD.The Carol of the Bells is my favorite!!I also love Silent Night which is one of my all time favorite Christmas carols. This album is great to put on a at a Christmas party and hit repeat. It has a nice mix of songs that you don't get tired of hearing! This is a must have and I would highly recommend this CD for anyone that enjoys Christmas songs and the holiday season. You will catch yourself humming the songs through out your day!It will definitely get rid of any "BAH HUM BUG" moods!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Symphonic Christmas Album
I was looking for arrangements of many traditional Christmas carols done by orchestras. This album hits the spot.It is not uniquely orchestra carols, the Canadian Brass is mixed in as welll. The highlight of the album for me is the back to back track of "Sleigh Ride" pieces. It begins with W.A. Mozart's "Sleigh Ride," followed by Leopold Mozart's piece of the same name, and then finnished with the ever popular arangement of "Sleigh Ride" by Anderson. It is a really good mix of carols, and can be listened to for hours. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD
I picked this CD up because it was a compilation of some of the most beautiful pieces of music sung by the world's greatest tenors. The CD has 4 different versions of "Ave Maria" alone, and is finished by Mario Lanza singing "The Lord's Prayer."This CD is a must-have for anyone who loves "soulful" singing by great voices.Read more
