2-0 out of 5 stars I'd rather watch Bugs Bunny cartoons
I borrowed this disc from a co-worker.Initially, IO was interested in this disc because it seemed like it could be a very clever way to introduce classical music to children.I tried to like it, but I found the singers very cloying and saccharine sweet. The lyrics created for the music were very ricky-ticky and not very creative.Perhaps it is best used with very young children, but my students were less than impressed with the selections available on this disc. When introducing classical music to young children, I have found it is not necessary to find cutesy versions of the music with silly lyrics put to them.Watching old Bugs Bunny cartoons (quite a few use classical music as their background) caught my students attention and interest a lot more than the music on this disc did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids love it
I have not actually listened to this one - we gave it as gift and have not heard from them either. But we started with Beethoven's Wig 3 which is OUTSTANDING!My kids love it, as do all the "kid" passengers who have ever heard it.We also have #2, which initially didn't seem as good as #3, but with more listening, we are enjoying it more too.#3 was a winner from the very first song. The lyrics are hilarious and the music is beautiful - and my kids love the instrumental pieces as much as the sing-along versions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crap/KitchSAVE YOUR CHILDREN FROM THIS!
This is so much worse than silly phrases to remember a symphony and the composer. The singing is horrendous, and so much vibrato, that anyone who thinks it is an example of good musicianship will never learn that there is some good music out there - 'cause it ain't HERE!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Great Fun
Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks.Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

If Rieu is not the most outstanding purveyor of Viennese waltzes and similar light-hearted fare, he is certainly the most popular and well-known. There are plenty of fun pieces on this album, although, to be just a tad pedantic, more of it is Italian and French than remotely Viennese. But it's all fun, and it's all well-played. Read more

The music is so upbeat and you are automatically in a good mood.It is a real pleasure listening to this CD and it is done frequently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice
I am really a rock music fan but I enjoy this version of light classical music. It may not be for the serious classical music enthusiast, but it is still considered excellent light entertainment. What a way to introduce classical music to a wider audience!

2-0 out of 5 stars Pop Strauss, et al
I was looking for truly Viennese renditions of Strauss waltzes.Though unrelentingly upbeat, this isn't it.There are medleys of Strauss, Offenbach, Rossini, and everyone else imaginable. It's a pop version of what was once pop on its own.I know Strauss isn't serious classical fare, but this trivializes it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A knockout performance
Like so many of the reviewers here I am not an opera aficionado. But I sensed immediately the night I saw this concert on television that this was one of those 'remarkable' artistic events. Domingo and Pavarotti both have such strength and beauty in their voices that they overwhelm. Carreras adds flavor and enthusiasm.
5-0 out of 5 stars The night that started it all!
You can read the technical information about the contents of this CD above. That is not what this review is about. I became intrested in opera about 1 1/2 years ago because of happening upon Mario Lanza. Since then, I have experienced many great truly operatic voices, including the "King," Pavarotti.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great singing from the three tenors
This cd is a must-have for anyone interested in opera - or beautiful singing. And when you're at it - why don't buy the dvd from the concert? It will make you appreciate the cd even more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Cast Recording
As cast recordings go, many of them fail to bring the spirit of the show to life. However, this 1981 cast recording of Joseph Papp's production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance hits the spot dead centre! Complete with dialogue, just like the D'Oyly Carte recordings of the 1960s, this is a superb reminder of a magnificent cast. The great pity is that, although Estelle Parsons is wonderful, the recording was not made when the original Ruth, Patricia Routledge, was in the cast. However, when it transferred from the Park to Broadway, she didn't go with it. Never mind, it makes up for it with a dream cast including Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt, Rex Smith and the one and only George Rose. A fine recording that every musical collecter (whether a fan of G&S or not) should own.

1-0 out of 5 stars they would've been better models
sure, on the cover of the cd they look very "pretty" but when it comes to singing it is horrible. The instruments they used were messed up. my very favorite piece in pirates of penzance is "I am the very model of a modern major general" and somehow they managed to mess that up too. the people who sing this are either out of tune or they are singing too slowly. If you want to hear real and good pirates of penzance than i suggest getting the older version (the one with a drawing on it).when it comes to an opera (especially gilbert and sullivan operas) looks can not be everything . Being able to sing is a must.

4-0 out of 5 stars Penzance Pleases!
It is very difficult to understand the words of practically everything sung by the chorus of a D'Oyly Carte Opera Company recording of Gilbert & Sullivan. Not so with this brilliant Broadway cast album of The Pirates of Penzance. You can listen to this one without the printed copy of the book and lyrics in hand. The individual cast performances are fresh and give the feeling that this musical is being performed for the first time. This is not the pro-forma, ritual performance that sounds like everyone is just going through the motions. You will want this on your portable player for a long time. ... Editorial Review

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was certainly one of the greatest singers of her own, or indeed any other time. An obsessive perfectionist, her flawless technique and intonation over a huge range, vocal flexibility, breath control, phrasing, stylistic versatility, and above all her focused, radiantly beautiful sound were matchless and incomparable. All these are on full display on this generous 2-CD set, which features over a dozen arias, songs by Schubert, Wolf and Richard Strauss, and some lighter fare. The recordings were made between 1950 and 1967, and the singing becomes better and better, the voice richer and more varied, the expression deeper and more immediate. Not surprisingly, the peaks come in the arias from her signature roles in Mozart's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars RIP DAME ELIZABETH (1915-2006)
This set is a fine tribute to this extraordinary singer and musician.I was saddened to read about her passing. She had a long life (90 years) and inspired a whole generation of singers and music lovers throughout the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars SCHWARZKOPF ----- ONE OF THE GREATS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's career is what legends are made of.She is every bit as fundamental to classical singing in the twentieth century as is Maria Callas.Schwarzkopf sang with refinement, polish, beauty of voice, and meticulous articulation. She was the greatest Mozart and Strauss soprano of her day; her ability to sing the operetta music of Lehar, Suppe',and Johann Strauss has not been equalled; she performed with distinction orchestral compositions of Mahler, Brahms, Bach, and Handel;her Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, and Mahler lieder were exemplary. She sang many operatic roles, far more than many people realize, and was certainly the definitive Marshallin in "Rosenkavalier" throughout the 1950's and 1960'. I saw her many times in recital in Chicago, and even at the time of her farewell (which I was fortunate enough to see), she was sublime. All of the superlative qualities of Schwarzkopf are generously demonstrated throughout these two wonder CD's.Virtually every item is magnificent (though obviously some will prefer some to others) and has the detailed Schwarzkopf imprint stamped right into the music. This CD, great as it is, represents only a very small part of the greatness of Schwarzkopf. I already own tons of her operas and recitals, from which many of the items here come from. But for the sake of completeness, I will probably add it.A person who loves great singing can never have too much of the art of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. She's a vocal icon.

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT!
I only want to say that you can hear, in this double cd, one of the great singers of all time. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Why? Because she sings all the arias and lieder with pure of tone, brilliance, perfect inflexion, modulation, excellent control breath, measured vibrato, and, all above, great emision of colours. She is master in this art. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you.You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you like classical music don't buy this CD.
Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing.I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's.If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't...!!!
To combine a voice as beautiful as Pavarotti's with some of the world's greatest music and outstanding orchestras, and end up with this...`thing'...is unforgivable. After buying and listening to it, it brought to mind those painful words "A fool, a fool. I saw a fool today. I saw him in the mirror."
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Tenor - Poor CD Quality
I have never been a huge fan of Maestro Pavarotti but I must admit that this compilation is a masterful collection of his operatic highlights.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great Music......Horrible Mastering
Pavarotti has a voice that can take hold of you and change your entire mood...even if you don't know Italian. The problem with this set is the mastering (mastering evens out the volumes and signal to noise ratio on an album). The first CD in this collection is so quiet that you literally have to crank your player to get any kind of volume. For a professional CD this is absolutely unacceptable.

What you get here is one more review from a person who has not heard this compilation. But don't be hasty to skip it. I will try to make it informative.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful compilation of classical music.
This is a perfect introduction to classical music and I do not understand some of the overtly negative criticism from others. It is an excellent way to "get your feet wet," so to speak and then you can decide which composers you wish to become more familiar with. You would have to buy quite a few CDs to experience all this set has to offer.Although the CD title is tongue-in-cheek...and perhaps that is what people object to...there is nothing to criticize here.

1-0 out of 5 stars I doubt people who hate classical music would buy this
I figure this set is mainly for people who want to teach themselves to appreciate classical music. However, it's not how I started out (age about 17). In those days nobody seemed to think anyone would want to learn how to listen to classical music. I was held up by my family as a real freak. :-) Anyway, at the time, World Record Club was run by people with a wide knowledge of classical music (whereas today it's run by market-driven managers who know nothing about it) so I was able to buy LPs at such reasonable prices it didn't matter if I later found I didn't like what I'd bought. I could have done with some guidance, of course, because I honestly couldn't tell the difference between Bach and Bartok; that's how bad my listening skills were. One of my first Bach recordings was definitely not one I would recommend to a beginner (Menuhun's performance of The Musical Offering) so I could have landed up deciding I didn't like Bach. If this type of production is what it takes to bring more people to classical music, then I guess it has to be a good thing. I've given it only one star because there is no way I would want to own it! ... Read more

A ndres DVDs get better, an excellent show in wonderful surroundings, I have his latest.

3-0 out of 5 stars Content Excellent but marred by poor video.
I was dissapointed in this video from the viewpoint of very poor video quality. Barely on a par with VHS. I have a 480P front projector with an 80" diagonal picture and it was unwatchable on that system I had to view it on my 36" tv to have an acceptable picture and even then it was not great. I have several Andre Rieu videos and have never run into that before. According to other reviews Denon has put out a very poor product this time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
This is a good recording. If you don't like the 3 tenors, then look else where. It's that simple. These are recordings from concerts where they WERE supposed to show off. This ain't opera. If you want opera, go out and attend one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best from the three greatest...
The first thing we must establish here is that this is not meant to be opera. This is three exceptionally talented tenors enjoying themselves and giving tremendous joy to those listening by singing mostly popular "evergreens" and also some operatic arias. The beauty in music lies in the diversity, in my opinion. One can better appreciate one type of music when one knows about the others. And why should we limit ourselves to listen to just one genre in music. It would be the same as having steak for dinner every day for the rest of your life, wouldn't it? So why should we limit three wonderful tenors to only sing operatic arias for the rest of their lives? If so we wouldn't have "Maria", "You'll never walk alone","Singing in the rain" or any of the evergreens on this recording and that would be a shame.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Like the Real Thing!
A few years ago I was lucky enough to actually see a Three Tenors concert. The experience was amazing. Later I bought this CD. I was so happy when I listened to it because the CD captures the mood of being present at the concert. I like the variety and every time I play it, I am taken back to my personal experience at the concert. Hearing the audiences on the CD really gets you excited about hearing this amazing trio. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Production
It is almost imposible to find a flaw in this production.Valerie Masterson is wonderful as Mabel, John Reid is fantastic as the Very Model of a Modern Major General, Donald Adams makes a great pirate king & Owen Branigan's Police Sergeant is Superb.
3-0 out of 5 stars Quality but Staid
For newbies: *Pirates* is indeed one of the most pleasurable of the G&S shows. While not the most satirical, not the most ambitious, it is perhaps the most perfectly realized. Particular treat: wonderful music and lyrics for the chorus.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid and Traditional
Despite its old production date, the music is loud and clear - no static, scratching, distortion, etc. that you can get some from old productions.

Editorial Review

It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. It's all of theseand none of them. Once you accept the fact that this sequel to the originalblockbuster concert recording is less about music and more about entertainmentand the power of musical personalities, you can appreciate what you're hearingas an event--phenomenal and bizarre, momentous and frivolous. This is anoccasion to celebrate the voices and egos of three huge superstars, and to havefun listening as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras interact, bouncing lines off each other and playing to the overwhelmingly enthusiasticaudience. Much of the fun and flavor of the concert is dependent on seeing theaction, though, and without the visuals you notice flaws in the singing muchmore. Domingo comes off as the more solid performer, and his voice is in farbetter shape than the other two. But if you crave big, high, and loud--and youdon't take your opera too seriously--you'll love this disc. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Un gran concierto
3-0 out of 5 stars Give em a 3.5
The Three Tenors has/have become a cottage industry, churning out one CD after another for every imaginable event and in every combination. This does not mean that the results are necessarily inferior but it does imply a commercial, layman's approach. And maybe this is better - spreading the joys of fine music to the masses. After all, where besides figure skating and cartoons do most people have a chance to even hear opera?5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Enjoyable Evening IN !!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful waltzes conducted by a master of the genre.
Franz Lehar is most famous for his operetta "The Merry Widow," but he wrote several other tuneful operettas -- including "The Count of Luxembourg" -- as well as many delightful waltzes, the most famous of which is the great "Gold and Silver Waltz." This CD presents the "Gold and Silver Waltz," plus a collage of tunes from "The Merry Widow" and another from "The Count of Luxembourg," and other waltzes. The performances are by the Johann Strauss Orchestra conducted by the great waltz conductor Willy Boskovsky. If you love fine waltzes or simply are one of the few people who still appreciate the great music of the Romantic era, please get this delightful bargain CD while it's still available. Unfortunately, EMI CDs are often withdrawn shortly after their release. Please don't let this one get away from you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enchantment Indeed!
This CD is simply amazing! However, I am sick and tired of people pressuring her to be someone that she's not!Trying to fit into today's popular music scene, Charlotte has turned to pop, and her career isn't flying well because of it!Her voice is simply amazing for opera, and I will not hear another insulting word about her!
3-0 out of 5 stars Great voice
Charlotte Church has a magnificent voice and her range is quite impressive as she demonstrates with this album. The only tune on this album that I really cared for was "The Prayer".I did not really connect with any of the other songs on this album.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy It Used
I bought this album when it came out. I enjoyed it the first month because the album had a nice collection of songs, but then I found it intolerable because I couldn't ignore Charlotte's voice anymore. "The Prayer" really showcases how bad her voice has gotten--she can't hold low notes without losing air, and when she sings high notes, the orchestra overpowers her and her voice is lost somewhere between the wind instruments and the strings. I was quite suprised at this change because I was expecting it to be on par (or even better) than "Voice of an Angel".
