4-0 out of 5 stars A scary soundtrack
This is a compilation of what we can call "normal sounds" but they can scare the hell out of you if you are alone, the place is dark or it's late in the evening. I found that there are some sounds that can be considered out of place here. Phone sounds or machine guns are not "typical" of Halloween. But we have also the classic ones: gongs, chains, creaking doors, laughters, wolves, screams... The footsteps are very realistic. You can hear it almost from beginning to end without noticing. There are no pauses between tracks, and it's good also if you are planning on make your own compilation. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Film soundtrack waiting to happen
It's so unfortunate: there are some cool sounds featured here. How great would it be to see a film, a visual compendium to match? Unfortunately, that film hasn't been made. Horror film needs to embrace minimalism, atmosphere, and mood. All we've had for years is sledgehammer to the face, over the top, metal soundtracked, FX OD fests. Close your eyes, walk through darkness, and try to evoke something resembling a chill or two with this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great collection of songs for Halloween
I have to add my 2 cents for the scariness of this cd. My 6 year old picked this out and we listened to it in the car on a long road trip. When the cd started my almost 4 year old covered her ears and started whimpering that it scared her.I told her "they were just being silly" so that my 6 year old could still listen to her cd.The 4 year old kept her ears covered for 4 songs all while I was trying to help her see how they were acting scary to be silly. After she had listened to the whole cd once she was not longer scared of it - and in fact now has most of the shorter songs memorized and constantly walks around the house singing "I'm a mean old witch with my hat... Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha".I'm glad I persevered and helped her overcome her fear so we now as a family have a blast singing Halloween songs together throughout the day.Now if you want to avoid any of this whimpering then definitely keep this cd for at least 5 year olds.My 6 year old wasn't scared of the cd at all and she loved how several of the songs have big "Boo"s at the end and other lightly suspensful moments.

5-0 out of 5 stars My child loves this CD!
I bought this CD for my son who was 4 at the time and he loves it!We listened to it all year long.Even as a parent I enjoy this CD and find myself sometimes listening to it when I'm in the car alone. My child didn't think it was too scary.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Haunted House CD I have been able to find
Trees surround our house and each year we create a Haunted Gauntlet for the Trick or Treater's to go through.Naturally this requires Good sound effects. We have bought several CD's in the past that were mediocre to just plain hokey. We received this CD yesterday and played it today.WOW!Literally made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck in broad daylight! It is exactly what we wanted-no stories, no narrative, no announcement for each sound effect (YES, we had one that did that and it ruined the whole effect!).This CD is a seamless blend of frightening scenes played out in surround sound to make them even more realistic.Creepy.Scary.Unnerving.It's Perfect for Haunting your House.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary and Often Disturbing!
This is an excellent blend of sounds and background for a truly terrifying haunted house. The individual tracks follow a theme, but they blend well together. Many of the segments can get almost disturbing! Some of the screams and cries for help will frighten the very young and make the elders a bit uncomfortable. But as far as a "serious" and non-comedic haunted house CD, this is the best I have found. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another great album!
Nox Arcana is truly a original band for the era. The music is never boring and you always find something new when listening to it that you may not have heard before. Vargo is a very gifted artist in all the work he does and I for one am glad he formed his own band. The creative work behind the cd's really comes through not just in the music but in the album designs. Midnight Syndicate lost one of the most creative person's behind their success, but by starting the band Nox Arcana at least none of the fans are suffering. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the next album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nox Arcana's finest soundtrack to date.
If there were not tracks on the cd that were spoken rather than instrumental you would almost envision yourself sitting in a darkened theater (or living room) watching the opening credits roll on an updated version of Dracula.Once again Nox Arcana have produced exemplary work on this, their fourth cd.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bloody Wonderful
Nox Arcana (what a perfect name)again show their mastery of Gothic sensibilities with an album that simply drips atmosphere . . . of the dank, clammy, foggy kind, cut with the lethal swoop of leathery wings and sudden, despairing shrieks. Read more

Editorial Review

Martha Stewart's sonic spookathon bodes well for her new alliance with Rhino Records. The 40-minute, single-track CD steals the Halloween thunder from tired, hokey hits such as "The Monster Mash" and leaves you scratching your head over why such a masterful menagerie of menacing sounds didn't hit the market sooner. Trick-or-treaters of timid stock will want to steer clear of doorsteps fraught with Stewart's frightful cacophony. From the unmistakable scrape of knives being sharpened to the rattling clang of rusty chains, what's here is perfect for goose bumps. A laugh so sinister that it could only issue from the larynx of a lunatic comes near a witchy cackle, howling winds, thumping human heartbeats, and the hair-raising rustling of branches. This is not for scaredy cats (nor for most kids under 6), but it's apt to play a sizable part in serving up a well-deserved scare to those in search of an authentic case of Halloween creeps. That's not to say this record will suit the needs of every Halloween host, though. The mix of movie-quality sounds isn't varied enough to keep from getting monotonous at parties, so it makes most sense to play this during high-traffic, quick-stop scenarios, such as candy dispersal to a steady stream of neighborhood ghouls. As a bonus, the indefatigable Stewart includes a booklet of Halloween how-to instructions, putting perfect caramel apples and just-so pumpkin-carving parties within crafty revelers' reach. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
It is one track and somewhat repetitive, but it's perfect for background music while handing out candy.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very dissapointed
After reading her excellent Halloween book, I figured her Halloween CD would be worth owning. I always search for "different" Halloween CDs, but this was filled with the same old stuff.
1-0 out of 5 stars Texas reviewer's two stars was too kind.
I am not a fan of "ice queen" Martha Stewart, but my wife likes her, and since Martha does have a knack for creating seasonal "atmosphere" I thought this might be fun. Shame on Rhino for releasing swill like this, and on Stewart for allowing her name to be put on this. "Movie quality recording" indeed! Yes, the sound quality is fine, but that's not the real issue here.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Halloween Cd I own
This is by far the best Halloween disc I own. I got mine at Walmart for like $10 about 5 years ago, much better price here. I saw all these fake reviews trashing this CD for some reason I'm unaware of, so I figured I had to write a review and stand up for this Awesome disc. Every Halloween like clockwork, I gotta play this disc, wether I'm decorating or partying. I bring this disc to every party I go to, a ripped version of course (you know people). Someone below wrote that these aren't the real versions of the songs, weak backround beats or something.. So not true, these are the exact same songs that I've heard on the movie soundtracks of the movies that they came from that I can tell. But what do I know? I don't sit in my car and listen to this kind of music looking for detrimental sound degradation to the soundtrack of Ghostbusters, LOL ( Don't know what I'm talking about? Take a look at some the other reviews, LOL).
3-0 out of 5 stars Nice CD

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant CD for creating "custom" sound environments
Everyones needs for Halloween effects are different. I love creating my own "environment" CD's using sound effects from various sources. This CD has some excellant sounds to be used in your own creation. This CD is NOT meant to be played "as is" at your Halloween Haunt. Rather, you need to combine these sounds to make your own special environement. I have been creating my own CDs (that I loop in a CD player) for years and I have enjoyed using this CD the most. Yes, there are several sounds I will never use because they are bad, but not one CD I have purchased contains all sounds that I would use. I just hope that this company makes more sounds avaiable for us Haunters.Get this CD if you like mixing and matching sounds to create your own "mood" for your own haunt!

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Halloween Effects
I purchased this CD and I was ripped off. The sounds on the CD are pathetic. They are of poor quality, with one person standing in a sound booth. I could have made a better recording with my tape recorder and mic myself.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good sound effects CD
If you are looking for individual sound effects, this is a good CD to buy.It is not designed to be played in its entirety for trick-or-treaters.Rather, you should use it to record individual tracks for other uses. When used in this manner, it is an excellent CD.The tracks are seperated by blank space so it is easy to select individual sounds. There is a good range of sounds, from spoken words ("Welcome to my house"), to classic Halloween sounds, to futuristic sounds.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterful Musical Depiction Of A Terrifying Tome
Not long ere this time, we were taken on a journey through the haunted halls of a ruined Victiorian mansion, home of the notorious Darklore family. Now we are invited to once again pay heed to the call of Nox Arcana... masterful and peerless minstrels of the macabre, as they invite us to walk with them once more. This time our journey is into ahorrifying yet captivating musical opus depicting the pages of the mythos long ago scrawled by H.P. Lovecraft. Before you now lies, related to us in music, the ancient tome of the Necronomicon. Do you dare to open its pages and gaze upon them?
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant
This is a hypnotic, dark symphony that perfectly captures the mood of the Lovecraftian Mythos. Listen to this in the quiet of night and be transported (metaphorically) across the vast gulfs of space and time to where great Cthulhu lies dreaming. This is the best HPL music I have ever heard, better than the music of Eric Zann.

5-0 out of 5 stars A musical homage to H. P. Lovecraft's famed Cthulhu.
The second release by Nox Arcana is even better than the first, Darklore Manor, which reflects on the growth of Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski.Though Darklore was quite a treat for the ears, Necronomicon is a feast for the senses.Filled with haunting and provocative music and interjected at points by the mesmerizing vocals of Joseph Vargo as he gives narratives on select individuals of the Great Old Ones and The Elder Gods; Necronomicon is a delightfully chilling piece of art.You could swear that something was manifesting behind you due to the power of this cd.Fans of both the written stories and the Call of Cthulhu roleplay game would find this album a treasure for their collection as it is a must have.Prepare to have your hair stand on end and a chill run down your spine. Not for the faint hearted. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic and sweet - a great pick for nighttime
This CD of soft, ambient, aerial sounding music (I personally can't distinguish any female vocalists, although it's possible that what sounds to me like sweet, angel-voice synthesizer music is actually someone singing) is a great one for bedtime and car trips with a fussy infant.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great purchase
We have been having problems with our 16 month old continuing to sleep all night long. The first night I played this CD my daughter slept the best that she has in weeks. The CD incorporates the noise from the womb and adds music. I will definitely buy it for friends that are having babies

1-0 out of 5 stars Know what you are buying!!!
If you are looking for a CD that basically incorporates sounds of a person's heartbeat with a lot of shushing sounds, and very faint female light vocals in the background (not actual words - just sounds) - then this is the CD for you. I did not expect this when I bought it. In my opinion, it was not very relaxing, my baby still screamed his head off and it really didn't help much. I had serious issues with colic and honestly the only things that helped were the books, "Secrets of the Baby Whisperer" and "The Happiest Baby on the Block". If you are looking for a good bedtime CD - I would go with First Whispers Sleeptime Edition. ... Read more

Whether you're trying to create your own personal haunted house or just creep out selected family members, this extensive compendium offers pretty much every spooky sound imaginable. Witches, wolfmen, and windstorms cackle madly through some tracks, while eerie music--pipe organ and theremin, mostly--provides moody accompaniment to your own ghostly tales. And for those of you who like to throw in a little "trick" of your own before offering treats to the neighborhood kids, cue up one of the disc's dozen or so scary door greetings (we're partial to the grave "We're Digging Up Your Treats" option). 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This is a great CD!Each track fades up to full volume at the start and fades down to silence at the end. This makes it nice to just play the entire CD or to loop one track since there are no sharp changes from one noise to another. So far the Car and Washing machine tracks seem to be our baby's favorites. When she outgrows the need for this white noise CD, we'll transition her to lullaby or classical music. For now though, this CD helps us keep her on a schedule and well rested by helping keep her relaxed and usually asleep during her nap times. As a bonus, the Waves and Rain on the Roof tracks are soothing for grown-ups needing to drown out noise while they sleep.

4-0 out of 5 stars So thankful for this CD!
Our 3 month old daughter has been battling colic for the past 2 months. When friends told me to try a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner, I thought they were insane! One night, we were at our wit's end and tried the hair dryer. She IMMEDIATELY stopped crying. This was great--however, I did not like having a hair dryer running non-stop for fear that it would ruin the dryer or possibly cause a fire! This CD has been a solution to our problem.I put the hair dryer track on repeat, and as annoying as it can be to an adult, it seems to truly soothe our baby. The vacuum track helped as well (the others didn't work as well for our baby). This CD is a must for PARENTS suffering through colic with their baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the greatest thing ever.
The first night we used this -- when my son was 6 weeks old -- we put it on the womb sounds track & he slept SIX HOURS.This was a miracle at the time, and he just got progressively better and better. We played the womb sounds track all night long for his first year, then switched over to the track that sounds like a rushing stream.Whether or not you consider this developmentally-needed by baby's brain, this white noise "music" covers the rest of the noises in our small house, so we don't have to worry about being quiet after our now-two year old goes to sleep. Now he asks for his "night night music" every evening as we are getting ready for bed.(But he also has no trouble sleeping without it when we are traveling.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sure cure for insomnia
Found this at a local library around 20 years ago, bought a copy and after quite literally about 10,000 rotations it is finally making some clicking noises towards the end and waking me up. I didn't think you could wear-out a cd there being no surface contact with the lasar and all, but the noise is there nonetheless so I guess you can. I'm sure I could probably sleep without this thing but at this point it is so ingrained into my subconsious that it is like audible crack. The delicate decrecendo of the rain over an hour-long period, balanced by the soft chirpings of birds and crickets will lull you into oblivion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended For Sleeping
I love this CD. My wife and I have kept it playing on repeat, every night, for the past 4 years. If you like rain, I definitely recommend it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Rain with crickets and birds
As one reviewer said this rain CD has the sounds of crickets and birds towards the end. If you are looking for only the soothing sound of rain with no birds, crickets, thunder or other annoying things, I recommend "Sounds of the Earth: Rain in the Country".The "Rain in the Country" CD is a clear recording of a steady rainshower. This was exactly what i needed- the perfect ticking clock. Also find an amusing set of tool and appliance sounds including several different toilet flushes. All very boring kind of normal sounds, but when you have to have 'em, you have to have 'em. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good Halloween fun
I was surprised at how good musically most of the songs on this CD are, since most could stand up on their own even if you ignored the Halloween theme. A couple of the songs I could live without, but overall it's quite enjoyable, and fun rather than spooky. I agree with everything my fellow Tennessean below had to say in her good review, so I'll just add that this music is quite mellow too - all soft rock and R & B. A few of the songs have some Halloweeny sound effects or voices added in, but more of that would have added to the fun. I've been collecting Halloween classical music for years (such as "Night On Bald Mountain" by Mussorgsky, "Totentanz" by Liszt, "Dance Macabre" by Saint-Saens, "Isle of the Dead" by Rachmaninov, "Dance Symphony" by Copland, etc.), so I'm glad to have this CD of popular music to add variety to my collection. Most of it has very good sound quality too. And although the CD cover doesn't affect the music, I love the funny spoof of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" album.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good Halloween CD
Monster Mash Rock and Roll Party is a very good and fun Halloween CD.It will really get you in the Halloween party mood.I took it to work and played it at our Halloween party, and it really set the tone.Everyone really enjoyed it.The songs are classics that we've enjoyed for years, even though some of them are not by the original artists. And they're fun, light-hearted Halloween songs, not eery or spooky.I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes to cut loose and have fun.

3-0 out of 5 stars FUN CD
This is a fun cd and the songs are good, but don't be fooled like I was into thinking these songs will be the originals that we've all heard on the radio all these years. One of them is,"Haunted House". The others come very close and this is a very good album despite that flaw the songs come very close. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars the music of Famous Monsters
I saw this music in the back of a 1970's era issue of "Famous
5-0 out of 5 stars THE ORIGINAL PHANTOM WOULD HAVE LOVED THIS!
Remember the great silent movie actor Lon "Man of a Thousand Faces" Chaney? Well, his legendary portrayal of Erik the Phantom of the Paris Opera house is instantly brought to mind when you listen to this grand pipe organ played in the true spirit of that unforgettable screen classic. Played on a Robert Morton/ Wurlitzer hybrid instrument, the album used to be sold in the original Warren Publishing Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine. It's been digitally re-mastered from the ORIGINAL MASTERS now, so The Phantom of the Organ is back and better than ever! Paired with The Vampyre at the Harpsichord on the same CD, you couldn't ask for a bigger bargain, or better mood music for monsters! This one is world-famous, and was way ahead of its time. It's still great, and is a must for horror music collectors everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE PHANTOM & THE VAMPYRE RETURN!
Back in the 70's I bought these (then lp) record albums at Disneyland (Merlin's Magic Shop) and had many years of fun at Halloween and also for my magic shows. We moved a few times, and these great albums disappeared with some of my stuff. I couldn't find them any place, and now you have them on CD! I forgot how creepy this music really is! Great for haunting houses, burying bones, or to set the mood for scaring the YELL out of your family and friends. The pipe organ is a real one (not asynthesizer,) and the harpsichord is real too. They used this music at Knott's "Halloween Haunt" every year, and at Universal Studio's "Castle Dracula" show on the tour back in the 80's. I think Howard Stern uses it for his Dracula music too. Great music for famous monsters, or even infamous monsters! Highly recommended!! ... Read more
