Great music...fun and catchy. I can understand some the songs, little disappointed that the lyrics were not included..

4-0 out of 5 stars Memories of Germany
If you've ever experienced Oktoberfest in Germany, this cd will bring back memories.Half the songs were just like munchen and included some yodeling. These are REAL polka's.Not like some of the American cd's I have bought, which included the banjo and sounded like German Deliverance on a bad day. The other half sounds like folk songs with the primary instrument being the dulcimer. Not what I heard at oktoberfest, but enjoyable all the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars My introduction to Lawrence Welk
Think is was 'round '98 or '97 at the time when I got introduced to him while watching several parts of his show THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW and it's pretty amazing that I watched that to this day. He sure got talent. I can't wait to hear more from him by looking into his albums and stuff. He's such a genius. Not to say he's the best, but also the baddest composer/musician/arranger/conductor/music maker 'round in history. Just like Quincy Jones, Henry Mancini, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, etc. were the baddest playas 'round there who made a way of bringin' back our music that still rocks today. Definitely a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Music
The most popular shows on public television right now are the rebroadcasts of the old Lawrence Welk Show. That should be enough to convince you to get with the Welk momentum.Timeless arrangements of classic songs.A true American treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Maestro of all time
Unlike most Welk afficionados, I was never a fan of his TV show.A bit too flashy for my down to earth taste.Thankfully, the maestro's music eschewed the flash, always focusing on the substance of the piece and getting deep into the heart of the music. So it goes on this exceptional collection.Does anyone need to hear Tony Orlando spell out the meaning of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree"?Does not the music speak volumes on its own?Sure does, and no one spoke the universal language of music with the fluency of Mr. One ana Two ana Three himself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Oom-pah Band Music
As the manager of "The Oktoberfest Webring," I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Geared for American audiences, all of the songs were tuneful, and most of them are familiar to Americans. Some were sung in German, some in English, and some were bilingual. The voices were pleasant, the sound quality was excellent, and each rendition was lively, colorful, and entertaining. The whole presentation was quite professional, done in good taste, and definitely NOT a brawl scene. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars World's Greatest Polkas
I bought this asd a gift for my Mom. I remember watching the Lawrence Welk show as a child. We are polish,so the polkas are special to us. This CD has many familiar polkas and is a treasure. My Mom keeps it in her player all the time. It was a perfect gift. There should be more like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars More good polka music from the masters
The irony of this CD is that Lawrence Welk himself only appears on one track: Just Because. That is the only track where there is an accordion duet between Myron and Lawrence with the backing of the Champagne Music Makers, Lawrence playing the accordion "lead".The rest are all drawn from Myron's solo output for the Ranwood label from the 60s and 70s. Very polished performances, they are happy music that can sometimes suffer from a bit of a homogenized production.Still, very good music and excellent accordion work from Floren. For a more thoroughly dynamic overview, check out the 22 Greatest Polkas CD by Myron Floren first.

3-0 out of 5 stars Competent performances
Like other productions by Lawrence Welk and Myron Floren, this one is professionally performed, but it really doesn't generate a lot of excitement. It could use a little more variation in tempo from track totrack. There are no lyrics anywhere, even though most of these songs comewith them. This is the first time, for example, that I have heard JustBecause without the words. This CD just doesn't have the pizazz of aFrankie Yankovic or a Joey Miskulin or an Eddie Blazonczyk. It's severalcuts above elevator music, however. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The World's Best
Having been an accordionist myself since the age of 8, and, too, having considered Mr. Floren as one of my childhood heros I was saddened to learn of Mr. Floren's recent passing. He was the consumate performer.Full of energy, charisma and the ability to make the accordion seem cool.I myself, can remember when I was playing in front of audiences doing a move that Myron made famous."The Bellows Shake."Where you as quickly as you can, move the bellows in and out causing the song to play in a vibrato rhythm.
5-0 out of 5 stars A decent compilation of the Welk era
This CD of 22 polkas, is a compilation of a few albums that appeared from the early 60s through 1975 on the Dot and Ranwood labels. On a few of the tracks, Myron is backed by the Welk band, and if you hear a second accordion player, chances are that it is being played by Lawrence Welk himself.....an example would be on Helena Polka. There is a part where Lawrence is playing the melody lead and Myron is playing some arpeggiated runs behind him. If only they would release Volume 2! This CD nonetheless highlights Myron's virtuosity as an accordionist, and the uniform excellence of his work from this time period.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like polkas, you'll love this CD
Myron Floren shows why he's considered the best accordianist around. Great tune selections, great artistry, and a fabulous band backing him up (who's that on the 2d accoridan?) I have Frankie's 2 CD collection of great polkas, but I play this one 7 times as much. Put this on in your car on Monday going to work and see if the work week doesn't start a little better! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Zivili brace, zivili sestra
On St. Patrick's Day everyone wants to be Irish, and listening to this album may make you wish you were Polish. Even if you don't know how to polka, it's almost impossible to stay still when you hear these joyous, infectiously bouncy dance tunes.Frankie Yankovic and a lot of guest stars, including Drew Carey and Weird Al Yankovic (his son, I presume?) sing these old favorites with great gusto.5-0 out of 5 stars good purchase for good listening
Not a rehash, this is good stuff for us thirsty Polka fans

5-0 out of 5 stars Frankie at his best!
In this CD, along with Volume Two of the same title, Frankie Yankovic outdoes himself. The performances are energetic and the recordings are superb. In the liner notes to Volume Two, we find that "Frank Yankovic is now 82 years old and in frail health" (he died about a year later). The accordion parts on this CD were performed, I believe, by Frank's faithful sidekick of at least 30 years, Joey Miskulin. But, on most of the tracks, Frankie still performs the vocals himself, and kicks in with his trademark instrument, the solovox organ. On most tracks, some vocals are also contributed by various other artists who have gathered together to salute the greatest polka performer of all time.Volumes 1 and 2 of Songs of the Polka King are Yankovic's best efforts ever. ... i really like the CD. it has nice instrumentals of many classic cowboy songs. the quality is very good too. the only downfall is that the CD is only about 30 minutes long so it is quite short. but other than that, i recommend it for anyone wanting to hear these nice classic songs.

Well its finally happened.I've given up my Allegiance to the Dark Night (Ozzy), and its all this album's fault.2-0 out of 5 stars Well, it's a package, I guess
This CD might as well be called Polka Dance Party, Volume 5.Like Volumes 1 through 4, which have also been named Polka's Greatest Hits, this collection of old, probably public-domain material leaves a lot to be desired. The sound is weak in both the volume and bass departments, and the Whoopee John tracks sound as though they were recorded directly from shellac 78's recorded in the 1940s.Stick to the better Frankie Yankovic releases, such as Songs of the Polka King Volumes 1 and 2. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best Compact Disk Ever!
I loved the Six Fat Dutchmen. The compact disk was great because it had a beat. The songs are awesome because they combine modern items of enjoyment with things of past enjoyment. Anyone can laugh, cry, or sing along with the compact disk, even if it is another language! This compact disk gave me an enjoyment of a lifetime. After listening to it I had to buy my own copy. I would suggest this compact disk to everyone! Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars going the way of the do-do bird
I was originally from Wisconsin and grew up with the great oompah bands, but i'm think they are getting to be a rare breed. The Fat Dutchmen still have that old oompah sound, reeds, brass, tuba, polkas just don't sound right played anyother way,can you imagine clarinet polka played on an accordian or a squeeze box? All the old oompah band leaders are retiring, seems there's no one to take there place, now all they seem to have is a accordian,a drum and a tuba, sometime, heaven forbid, they have thier whole family and relatives all lined up pumping away on squeeze boxes.I'm not against accordians but the should be used with descreation such as in this CD.All you polka lovers this is as good as it gets,i know this CD will warm the heart of any old oompah band lover.I think our last hope is getting the old German oompah bands in the German band section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
I grew up with Lawrence Welk tv every Saturday night.I've always enjoyed his music. All the songs on the cd bring back memories. It is terrific...

4-0 out of 5 stars Requested By Who (or is it Whom)?
Always kind of enjoyed Welk's music, but didn't want to admit it.This was my parent's music; very corny and square.I couldn't take the dancing on the TV show or some of the vocalist acts, but if you strip away all that and just listen to the music, it's very listenable (bubbly like champagne). Still, I preferred Guy Lombardo's sound over Welk's.I don't think any Welk fan would be disappointed over this nice selection of songs, but I doubt these are the "most requested" songs. If I was doing the requesting, I would ask for Calcutta and a Joann Castle number and definately a Lennon Sister's song or two. While Welk's band was a big part of the show, so were other performers who are not represented at all here. There are a few vocals here, but I can't identify who is singing; most of the songs are instrumental. It's a nice collection, but just not very representative of the overall Welk sound.Other reviewers say it's early Welk, so perhaps it was before the heyday of the TV show.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare and only example of early Welk
Lawrence Welk initially achieved fame as a big band leader starting in the late 20s, even achieving some notoriety for a few rare jazz sides on the Gennett label. This 16 track CD serves as an overview of his period recording for Columbia during the late 30s/early 40s.It highlights the genesis of the Champagne Music style that he was most associated with, Welk's accordion in the forefront.Parnell Grina, Welk's bassist of the time, gets a few vocals including Start The Day Right, a duet with Champagne Lady Lois Best on The Umbrella Man, and Comin' Thru The Rye. Best also is featured on Sing For Your Supper. Champagne Lady Jayne Walton is featured on 1,2,3 Kick! and Joan Mowery is the vocalist on Seems Like Old Times. While the commercial sweet band style is prominent throughout, it is enlivened by the organ filigrees of Jerry Burke, Welk's accordion and an occasional solo, such as the swinging tenor sax on Linger Awhile and the clarinet solo on the 1920s standard You're the Cream In My Coffee. There are two polkas on the disc, done in a very clean cut style. The sole chart hit is Welk's theme song, Bubbles In The Wine from 1939.Given that a more thorough sampling of his 1940s and 50s big band hits are not yet available on CD, this serves as a decent sampler of what initially appealed to Midwestern ballroom audiences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Taste of Yankovic
Yankovic's great accordian work with such happy songs as The Too Fat Polka, The Pennsylvania Polka, or the ever popular Beer Barrel Polka mesh well together.
4-0 out of 5 stars A decent overview of the original hits(no remakes)
Although this does omit the top 20 hit "Iron Range Polka" this does offer a decent overview of Frankie's signature songs in their original hit versions all in stereo except for the 2 top 10 hits he's ever had as they have been released in the 1940's, "Blue Skirt Waltz" and "Just Because."Other highlights on here include "Too Fat Polka," "Who Stole The Keeshka," and what I think is the definitive polka, the "Beer Barrel Polka."As another review has stated this was released on vinyl back in 1967 on Columbia and now for the low price of about $10, you can enjoy the polka king right on this CD.Unless you are a diehard fan, this is probably the only CD you'll ever need by Frankie with most of his signature songs among its 11 songs all in their original hit versions with no filler. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's crazy, fun, and funny!
These guys are accordion militants. If you want to hear what "An American Band" sounds like on accordion -- or "The Devil went down to Georgia" -- or any of a host of other songs -- these are your guys. They've risen to the challenge of Rock-n-Roll on accordions using miked reeds, distortion filters, pedal effects, and all the other stuff that normally gets applied to electric guitars, and the fact that they're incredibly talented doesn't hurt either.4-0 out of 5 stars Accordian Music...It's Not Just For Polkas Anymore
Yeeeee-haw!!! This is a party album riot! The opening track is a parady of Grand Funk's "We're an American Band" with appropriately revised accordianesque lyrics.[Warning:Be sure to buckle yourself in before hitting the "play" button, or you'll fall out of your chair laughing.]5-0 out of 5 stars I love TDA!
I have never heard the band play. All I know is that they bring popularity back to the accordian. As a thirteen year old player, I get made fun of and laughed at some.I have personally met a member of theband, who just so happens to be the pianist in a theater company I am in. I love playing the accordian, all all 8 of the members do too.Is it truethey make it sound like an electric gutiar? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diamond Quality
I have bought this CD and am listening to it now. There are few kinds of music that is both relaxing yet stimulating and mood enhancing. It just makes me happy!!! I would think that music from heaven itself might be like this! Listen to this CD and you will feel better. I have never agreed with the critics. I have loved his music even when I was a teenager and used to watch this with my family and we all loved it and still do!!!This is great for dining, relaxing at home, driving, vacationing and all around. I would love to see a new weekly television show. If ABC won't do it, then fine go a satellite channel! If you look at all the varieties of music L.W. had on his show and the dancing for the audience, it was a huge undertaking, but he obviously loved it and graciously carried on to great success. I think L.W. led the world in a way making harmonious melodies from a mixed variety from country to classical. It is truly an amazing feat that with "hard work" and "God's help" as he attributed his success in his book it can be done.Next to Bob Hope, Lawrence Welk was Hollywood's top musical entertainer in earnings says the "Current Biography" report on him. In his words "And now friends keep a song in your heart and have a wonderful, wonderful week."

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings Back Memories
This cd brings back memories of both my father and mother who are no longer with us.It's great to sit and listen to the music and think about them and just enjoy the music.

4-0 out of 5 stars More catchy than beautiful
The word "waltzes" brings to mind the Blue Danube, the Skater's Waltz, and a few others. Those are missing here. There are some catchy and well-known waltzes, but they tend to remind me of "real"versions I have heard elsewhere. These are decent performances, but theywill make you yearn for the best. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag
This collection contains many of the old standards and a few I'd not heard before. The quality of performance varies markedly from track to track however.I've heard better renditions of the Pennsylvania Polka from Jimmie Sturr and Lawrence Welk."The Happy Wanderer" is abysmal however, and will probably turn off all but the most avid fan. There is the occasional gem, like Dick Rodgers' "Try It, You'll Like It" polka, which is hilarious even though it's a bit thin on the vocals.4-0 out of 5 stars Good versions and decent sound
This CD consists of the original versions you grew up with. They were recorded in analog and cleaned up with today's technology and put on this CD for a decent mix of Polka favorites. All of the songs are clear and pretty true sounding. They are not hi-fi stereo like you hear on todays CDs but they are very clear and sound true.If you like Polka, this is a CD to get. 50 songs, all pretty good versions and dancable too, mostly in English.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag with some high points
All of the material on this two-CD set is at least 30 years old, but the sound quality is a cut above some other similar re-releases on this label. It is almost worth the price just because of Ach du Lieber Augustin on disc two. That track, by Whoopee John Wilfahrt, originally appeared on a 45-rpm single around 1960.The tuba player is in top form, perhaps inspired by the lyrics, "Und vhen the tuba goes oompah so schweet, my heart will ahnswer with each oompah beat".I wish more of these 45's could be found, for it is rare these days for Whoopee John tracks to sound decent (most are taken from 78's recorded in the 1940s).Many of the other artists' contributions to this collection leave a lot to be desired. The Frankie Yankovic tracks are thin and distorted, compared to that artist's superb original releases, and some of the other polka bands are nothing to write home about to begin with. There are several serious dropouts beginning on track 16 of disc two.Maybe it's just my copy; if so, and if you get a good copy, it might be worth an additional half-star or so.Future re-releasers, please search for those Whoopee John 45's, like When Otto Plays a Polka, Starlight Waltz, Banjo Polka, When the Sun Comes Over the Brewery, etc.I miss those. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lawrence Welk is still the best!
Lawrence Welk is the greatest artist of his time! His music is perfect to sip sparkling apple juice to!It is perfect to eat nice dinner of jello or tapioca pudding and listen to the master from Minnesota!Lawrence Welk rules!

5-0 out of 5 stars A real mood-booster, like any Welk recording.
This recording has melodious, solemn numbers in addition to peppy, merry, ones.More people should give Welk music a chance - they might like it.Hey, I'm only twenty-nine years old, and I adore it!Read more
