3-0 out of 5 stars Reviewing "Voice Lessons To Go"
I waited to review this CD.There is my feed back. This Vocalizing CD has good points to it as Ariella Vaccarino keeps it simple. However, it is annoying for those of us who are advanced or professional opera singers to have Ariella's comments in the background when the point of vocalizing is to exercise the voice well in peace and with full concentration. The over explaining I can understand as she needed to consider that every one can purchase her CD and they might not know operatic terms. The other point which I feel is lacking on this CD is that she does not take the voice high enough - for the over low parts one can just drop out as she suggests. The reason I purchased this CD was to have the exercises there when there is no piano to vocalize with.It is a good CD for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Get What You Pay For?
Yes.The cd has clear warm up and breathing exercises. There is no long talk filler or promises of greatness. You will need a few lessons with a real teacher to check your form and technique. You will find the exercises of a professional teacher exactly what is on this cd.Great for practicing in the car and warming up before a show.

Anyone who has been lucky enough to listen to Waits' Bone Machine Operator's Manual, or who has heard or even just read interviews with him, knows what a delight it is to hear this man speak. He makes analogies that seem to come from off the wall but which hit home.He plays games with his interviewers, sometimes answering the question that he would have asked himself, rather than the one they asked him.He makes you laugh about once every five minutes. He talks about his approach to writing and recording music in a way that will change the way you think about the creative process. And then of course, there's the simple fact of his unique voice. You don't even have to like Tom Waits' music to enjoy listening to these interviews; but if you do like the music, you will love this. ... I warm up with this cd in the hotel before a show.I waited a couple months to buy CD2 after I had CD 1.I had started taking vocal coaching and using cd 1 reinforced how important breathing is.I am glad I waited before buying this cd.By the time you get to the higher level exercises of CD 2, you'll need some concept of breathing properly.

This second volume is even more interesting than the first. It is a great learning experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product for the price
I bought this CD for my high school daughter who wanted to improve her voice and ear. She has enjoyed the exercises presented- especially the solfedge. The only thing she wished it included was a section where you would have to name by letter (A,B,C,D,E,F,or G)the pitch being played. Other than that it is a great buy for those interested in beginning to improve their voice and ear. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This sentimentally over-the-top spoken-word recording was originally issued in 1973, during the height of Watergate and the final, unsettling days of the Vietnam War. In the wake of September 11, 2001, the John Wayne Estate reissued it on CD. And why not? Marion Morrison, a.k.a. John Wayne and the Duke, remains an enduring symbol of America--a country with an endlessly conflicted legacy of largely improvised symbolism, national myths, revised-on-a-dime history, and the freedom to make a buck on effusive patriotic rhetoric. Kitsch collectors may welcome the chance to own a true genre staple in digital sound, while others may yet find genuine solace in its orchestra-and-choir-backed oratory. With a poetic sensibility that seldom strays from the "Carolina pines/Appalachian mines" level of its opening verses, Wayne's processed voice (which betrays the health problems that would be his demise) expounds on topics that range from his homeland's undeniable natural beauty to his son's high school football career and the wisdom of a fictionalized aging Mexican caballero. The would-be idealism in "The Hyphen" aims to erase ethnic and racial boundaries, yet modern hyphenated Americans may find continued prejudice and the vagaries of history have rendered its rhetoric distinctly double-edged. Still, Wayne's love of country emanates from every track. Patriotism may be the last refuge of scoundrels, but it's been graciously hospitable to Hollywood icons, from the Duke to Dutch Reagan. Editorial Review

There's a long tradition of artists banding together for a noble cause, but--needless to say--good intentions are no guarantee of good art. Fortunately, the twain do meet and the project even succeeds with creative flair in this compilation. It kicked off the Red Hot AIDS Benefit series back in 1990 and in fact launched its own sort of minigenre, including theme albums devoted to George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. In fact, this eclectic mix of Cole Porter covers interpreted by a wide swath of contemporary artists unfurls a pretty ambitious agenda in addition to its message of AIDS awareness and compassion. Here, the legacy of this ultra-sophisticated, closeted master of the popular song from the era of the "lost generation" is presented as a source of rejuvenating inspiration. Porter's craft seems validated by the very flexibility of the original songs as they get retrofitted to encompass styles ranging from U2 and Tom Waits to Jungle Brothers. There's an occasional miscalculation (Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop's didactic "updating" of Porter's bon vivant wit doesn't compare well with the original), but moments of stunning fusion abound (Sinéad O'Connor and Annie Lenox contribute especially memorable gems). Instead of getting lost in translation, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting tribute developing now it's own classic status.
The beautiful elements of all Porter's work are that the songs he penned are elegant, witty, refreshingly verbose, timeless and can, in effect, be sung by anyone to anyone. They are loving, sexy and sexless at once; which reveals much about the great man's character and genius.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous blended with the sublime
I am going to load this CD on my computer so that I can delete half of the tracks.Whoever had the bright idea of having someone rap out Cole Porter songs must've been on drugs. Cole Porter songs are known for their polished lyrics.Having hip-hop artists add what they think of as poetry is a travesty.

    Editorial Review

If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of"The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD.
Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

I loved her as Christine.I loved her Pie Jesu. Then I lost touch with her work for several years. The first thing off this CD that I heard was the introduction to the song "You take my breath away."

This boxed set is absolutely amazing. Lots of big-name poets as expected but also tons of great poets I'd never heard of before. It's fascinating to hear poetry read by the poets themselves because it adds a whole new dimension to your appreciation and understanding of the poems.

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought it for "Hurt"
I was scanning the radio channels one day and came upon Johnny Cash singing "Hurt".After hearing his somber melodious voice for a few seconds, I couldn't help but to hear the rest of the song; it was so poignant that I remember exactly where I was at that moment and what I was doing. The song isn't originally his, but it was definately made for him.Later, I heard the Nine Inch Nails version of Hurt.Johnny Cashes rendition puts them to shame.Although I purchased the CD for "Hurt", the other tracks are good as well.If you like hurt, you will like most of the other tracks. My favorite by far is "Hurt" but I never get tired of listening to "The Man Comes Around", "Give My Love to Rose", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "I Hung My Head", "In My Life" and "Sam Hall".One of the things I like about Cash is how he puts so much of his heart into his music and it's so simple with nothing more than his voice and a guitar.I'm not even a fan of country music, imagine that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have always been a fan of Johnny Cash, and nothing will ever replace the original albums, but this album is perhaps one of Cash's best albums. It offers new music with the old sound, but with a different sound. I recommend it to both Cash fans, and strangers to his music.

If you're buying this CD because you've heard John Lithgow's "Singing in the Bathtub" - don't do it.This is not the same toe-tapping, sing along fun music. In fact, I find it difficult to hear what is being sung over the orchestration.I can't stand to listen to it.

We are glad to have this second CD in our collection of (childrens') music. No, it's not the same as the first one.But then, we didn't want two of the same thing. This one sounds more like a broadway musical while the first is more big-band-sing-along.Both are really great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goofy!!
This goofy CD is the brainchild of actor and funnyman-extraordinaire, John Lithgow. Combined with Bill Elliott's orchestra, John sings his way through a number of funny old songs that my children and I found quite humorous. With only nine songs, it might look to be a short album, but it isn't. In fact, The Remarkable Farkle alone is almost fifteen minutes long!Read more

The soundtrack of Aparna Sen's "Mr. and Mrs. Iyer" introduced me to the 10th century poet saint, Jalaluddin Rumi.I was so impressed with, "Kithe Meher Ali..." (lyrics in Hindi inspired by Rumi's work) that I immediately set out to buy his work. However, each time I tried to read the poetry, I was at loss of the lesson. As it sat on my book shelf for several years, I returned back to it recently to meet with the similar fate.

This CD is an absolute joy to listen to! It thrills your senses. It makes your skin tingle. It opens your heart to love, brings you closer to God, the universe and all beings. 5-0 out of 5 stars I am the God
Rumi that we call him Molavi is a Dervish, who found everything in himself and love to the whole not to the single. He did not believed in any rules. His rules were his love to the world, to himself and us. All he just wanted to say is that there is something more than a materialistic life. Everybody who has not a background of the spiritual life especially in middle eastern countries will think of these poems as love to human, but Molavi believes that love is everything, and he himself is the God. When he says that God is here, just in me, it means that there is no conflict between loving myself and loving you. It is the same, we all love the same thing,God which is the whole existence of the world, everything you can imagine. Thanks to this team that tried to show the westerns that there is something more than fashion and this materialistic life. There are people who just live with their pure love to themselves and the whole and nothing more, and they are the happiest people in the world. Because they believe in that. I really loved this music, it reminded me of my country and my people and my history. Everytime I am trying to release myself from this prison which everybody is obliged to live in here, I listen to these gnostic songs. I am afraid that there is no special word for Erfan in English! ... Read more

These are some of the most uncreative and blatantly stupid jokes I've ever heard. He has a crude gimmick and his delivery is flaccid and reminiscent of Pauly Shore, only it's somehow worse. I'm absolutely astonished that anyone could derive any sort of joy from this guy's act. I'm convinced the audience on this CD was either intensely drugged or completely edited in. Even Dane Cook can be funny at times but Mitch Fatel is reprehensibly bad.

Like most, I had never heard of Mitch Fatel until recently when I happened to rent a comedy tour video and he had a 5 minute clip in it.I was hooked!I don't think I've laughed so hard listening to a comedian.I'm a big Dane Cook fan, but even with him, sometimes I feel as if he's really reaching for the laughs.I never feel like Mitch does this. His "little kid voice" combined with the comedic timing and hilarious observations makes this a must-buy.I played this in the car while driving with my brother and boyfriend and they were laughing hysterically. He's not well-known now but it hasn't taken long for him to develop a good, underground following...and it's only going to get larger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Young Comic
Mitch has the voice and tone of speaking to that little childish demon within. His brilliance is compounded by his ability to work the crowd within his work. This CD is perhaps the best Comedy disc to come out in years and is a must-own amongst all of my friends.I listen to this on the subway (thanks iPod) so loud that those sitting next to me will at times start laughing themselves. And his 2nd disc is now available at his website, run out and order them both.

As the lead singer and songwriting force behind Soul Coughing, M. Doughty combined a slam poetry, ironic sensibility with jam band-ish, arty Downtown grooves. That group was an apex of smart stoner rock. Since the mid ‘90s Doughty has gone it alone, and his first release for ATO combines two self-released solo recordings that flirt with the sublime. 5-0 out of 5 stars I Guess Making Your Soul Cough Can Lead To Great Things!
From the first track on Skittish *The Only Answer* to the last track on Rockitty Roll *Get Along*, I was simply blown away by the simply musicianship and dedication to beat poet lyrical rhythm that Mike Doughty sets up in these albums. *techincally one combined double-album, I guess*
5-0 out of 5 stars Mike Doughty's Solo career
This double album is one of my favorites and I am glad to see Mike Doughty moving on after Soul Coughing. Although Soul Coughing can never be beaten in my mind, Doughty is undoubtedly talented and his music is just amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go ahead, Jump on the bandwagon
Mike Doughty is amazing. I decided a few years ago to check up on the members of soul coughing because I truly missed their music. I was lucky enough to find out that Mike Doughty had a solo career going and was selling this CD on his own website www.superspecialquestions.com The CD was signed and included his own unique word written on the cover. Anyways, I picked it up and hasn't left the player since. This is not Soul Coughing music, but it's just as good in some weird way. I was never really into folky music but the guys voice is just electric and unique enough to draw you in. I was able to check out his show at Kent State a few months back. I didn't even know he was coming until I picked up the school's paper that day and saw he was performing for FREE that afternoon. Needless to say it was a great show and my friends who had never heard of Soul Coughing or Doughty before the concert were looking around after the show to see if his CDs were being sold anywhere. This guy's under the radar. This won't last long, though, since he's on Dave Matthews' label. Check out www.archive.org to download legal free live shows and get this CD so you can say you liked him back when.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't get much better
Mike Birbiglia is without a doubt one of the funniest comedians i know of.He is absolutely genious.Guitar guy at the party is so rediculously true not to mention cracka please.I bought the cd after watchin both his comedy central presents which have a lot of the stuff on this cd.If you buy this you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong comedic talent
I first heard Mike on XM radio's comedy channel (the pizza bit), and bought this CD on Amazon the minute I got home. It's the best comedy CD I have heard in years, by far.Mike has a talent for describing situations that one can both identify with and visualize (beyond the "don't you hate it when..." shtick that was nice enough for Seinfeld but is now tired). His use of vocal inflection (like Carvey or Williams but without the mania or need for a special "character") is subtle and well crafted and really adds to the atmosphere of the joke. Ironically, I thought his "guitar guy" song was probably the weakest part of the album or perhaps I was just laughed out by the time I got to it.I would love to see him live.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU HAVE GOT TO BUY THIS CD...
MIKE BIRBIGLIA IS PROBABLY THE FUNNIEST COMEDIAN THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD.I BOUGHT TWO DRINK MIKE AFTER SEEING HIM AT HIS "MEDIUM MAN ON TOUR" STOP IN PEORIA, IL.WE LISTENED TO IT THE ENTIRE RIDE BACK TO SPRINGFIELD AND COULDN'T STOP LAUGHING.I HAVE SINCE LISTENED TO IT AT LEAST 8 TIMES AND LAUGH HYSTERICALLY AT WIFFLE BALL TONY EVERY TIME!I WON'T EVEN GO INTO SCRABBLE WITH JAY-Z...THE WORD IS DRIZZAH...

4-0 out of 5 stars lovely!
The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.

1-0 out of 5 stars WHAT DID THEY DO?!
What is this trash?!This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse.I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Il Postino CD
I recently rented the movie Il Postino and fell in love with it!The music, the poetry, the story, all opened my eyes to a whole new interest in the Italian culture. It's wonderful because in addition to the movie soundtrack, the CD has more than 12 poems recited by actors with the music from the movie playing in the background. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great singing-along-with-while-driving-the-PA-Turnpike CD
The "Perfect Quartet" was renamed the "Hopeful Quartet" according to Mr. Keillor and they were in NY City to sing Gospel music because as he told the audience, "...some of you look like you need it." I needed this CD to perk up a long, frequent drive and it met the bill. Fun music and funny interludes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Garrison Has "Made" A Good CD
Listeners of "A Prairie Home Companion" are familiar with the Hopeful Gospel Guartet composed of Mr. Keillor, Kate MacKenzie and Robin and Linda Williams. They are accompanied here-- at times-- by the likes of Butch Thompson on piano and Chet Atkins who also produced the CD. The quartet sings some of the faster gospel numbers, the Stamps-Baxter types-- "My Rock","The Lord Will Make A Way", "Jordan", and "Travelin' Shoes." While these are sung well, I prefer the slower hymns, "There Is A Fountain", "Softly and Tenderly" and "Sweet Hour of Prayer." As you would expect from Mr. Keillor, he is not content to just sing here but interposes his familiar, gentle humor we have loved for so long on his radio show: "My people were Puritans who came to American in the late Seventeenth Century. They came to America in hopes of discovering greater restrictions than were permissible under English law." Mr. Keillor weaves such threads as these throughout the CD. My favorite cut here is the hauntingly beautiful a capella arrangement of "Now The Day Is Over." Keillor waxes nostalgic between verses about a young boy's sexual awakening in Minnesota and his desire to leave small town America and, in his case, get to New York City. Keillor pulls this off without becoming maudlin. He achieves here something similiar and as beautiful as what Thorton Wilder does in OUR TOWN, I think. 4-0 out of 5 stars Old-fashioned can be good
Music that is actually warm, from the heart, and wonderful when sung in haunting a cappella. This is an album with some sacred tunes done honest prairie style. A rare treat. There is interruption by Garrison Keillor's monologues, but you can skip them once you've heard them a few times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is powerful!
For those of us who missed seeing Malcolm in person, this will give you a sense in why he is a sage of the hightest order. I am humbled at his way in which he makes us think.Very powerful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inflammatory!!!
Malcolm X's words are as true today as they were then.Unfortunately, not as much has changed as what we may think. He was so inflammatory and provocative; I can't imagine how "either side" took his heated messages when he first delivered them.Absolutely mindblowing.I wish I was there to witness his charismatic delivery and the strength of his testimony. ...
