Editorial Review

Try to forget the fact that Bing Crosby probably never had to record another song in his life after he immortalized "White Christmas." If you can do that, you'll find plenty more to like in this crooning Christmas collection. There's the Romantic Bing, charming the tinsel right off the tree with "The Christmas Song," and that cure for cabin fever, "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" There's the Reverent Bing, solemnly singing "Adeste Fideles." And of course, there's Bing the Showman, belting out "Good King Wenceslas" with a bit of that ole vaudeville shine. But no matter what you're told, "White Christmas" will be the number one reason for sticking this one in your stocking. And who can blame you? It's as timeless now as it was way back when. Read more

I'd rather hear Nat King Cole sing Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire than anyone else.Still this was a family favorite when I was growing up and although I still own the record (yes, record) I purchased the CD to continue listening to it now.Bing Crosby is a Christmas staple and this collection of songs is one of his best.

This is the only Bing Crosby Christmas tape that you need to own.
5-0 out of 5 stars an all-time Classic
Buy this CD. You will not be sorry. Bing sings a great selection of Christmas songs, including the unforgettable "White Christmas " by Irving Berlin.

3-0 out of 5 stars Who chose these?
Yeah, I know I had the chance to listen to the clips before buying, but they did not do justice to the music on this CD. If it is true that some of these were on the "Top 10 Hit List" of popular songs of the era, then I think we can not complain about the tastes of 21st Century pop music lovers. To think that kids were buying this stuff instead of the wealth of fantastic music being recorded in this era!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Twenties Are Indeed A Living Era!
I just purchased this album, and one called "Chart Toppers Of The Twenties", both by the British record label ASV Living Era. I can heartily recommend ANY Living Era album offered on Amazon. These CD's are remastered from the original 78 rpm records. That is because the record companies choose not to reissue their own masters, particularly in the United States. The copyright laws are very restrictive here. That said, the quality of these CD's are very good. I own several of the 78 rpm records of these tunes, and the transfers are quite faithful to the originals.
3-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Grumpy's Not Quite So Enthusiastic
When a fad hits, everyone hopes to grab a piece of it before it disappears. Think of all the dreadful songs that tried to ride piggyback on The Twist. While there were some fun songs, there were lots of dreadful clunkers that someone hoped would be a winner by including "Twist" in the title. Back in the 20s, when fads became a way of life, one of the biggest was the Charleston. This collection grabs a bunch of tunes with the name Charleston in the title and heaps them with other songs of that era, though certainly not dance numbers.

5-0 out of 5 stars An all-star collection of folk and country singers do "Songs of the Civil War"
If you liked the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" or have actually heard of the album "White Mansions," then you would want to check out this 1991 collection of "Songs of the Civil War."The various artists are not only folk singers like Judy Collins and Richie Havens, but country singers such as Waylon Jennings and Kathy Mattea, and artists who work the area in between, namely John Hartford. But mainly this album is going to be of primary interest to those interested in the Civil War who will most enjoy hearing familiar songs sung by familiar voices, and certainly be introduced to both new songs and singers as well, such as when Sweet Honey in the Rock sings "No More Auction Block."Sometimes you will be surprised to learn who is singing what, as I was when Jennings did "Rebel Soldier," but that just speaks to why this is such a great album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Has it all
Hi!I love this CD because it has every song I wanted, plus some I didn't know.I'm a Civil War Reenator so authenticity is important.I was disappointed that "Dixie" was instrumental only, but the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" is so moving, it more than made up for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Carl Stalling Project
Music from Warner Brothers cartoons "Golden Years" (1936-1958).
5-0 out of 5 stars Warner Brother's King of Music
Even if you do not recognize his name, Carl Stalling is a very familiar composer. He wrote the soundtrack for many of our young lives as the composer for Warner Bros.' "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" cartoons from late 1930's to late 1970's. Hal Willner has compiled this CD that for the first time lets you hear the music on its own, and lets you realize just how much of the cartoons' impact came from Stalling's music. 5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best avant-garde albums I've heard.
To truly appreciate this music, remember that it follows the action of the cartoons. Musically, it has no conventional sense of rhythm, time, or progression. Very quirky, fun, and enlightening. Essential stuff. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Roaring Good Time
This CD is really lots of fun! It has great variety, with 25 songs total, lots of vocals, from little-known to well-known single female and male, male-female duets and whole groups. Very familiar to many of us are, of course, Annette Hanshaw in a quirky and fun "Button Up Your Overcoat," Fred Astaire in a showtune "My One and Only" by Gershwin, Al Jolson in an especially wonderful "I'm Sitting On Top of the World," and, of course, the incomparable Louis Armstrong in "I Ain't Got Nobody" with his orchestra. And what would the Roaring '20s be without the 1920s-defining "Charleston," and a very nice version, too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation and restoration
I have been searching for the recording of Charles King singing, "Broadway melody" for years. Here it is - in an excellent restoration - with just the slightest (and soon unnoticed) hint of surface hiss. What a great performance. Gene Kelly imitated King's phrasing and style when he did the same number in "Singing in the rain." King introduced the song in, "Broadway Melody of 1929." He was a talented Broadway singer who hoped to follow Al Jolson's success in Hollywood. He was memorable in the movie but soon returned to Broadway, found plenty of work, and was eventually forgotten. 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT QUALITY AND SELECTION
This CD is technically great - NO hisses or surface noises unlike other 1920's compilations. The song selection includes all of the essentials: The Charleston, Black Bottom, Varsity Drag, Button Up Your Overcoat, Pasadena and Miss Annabelle Lee. Pasadena, Varsity Drag, Collegian and Black Bottom are terrific dance songs; the sounds are so clear the bands sound live. The song selection also includes a couple of stodgy songs performed by Paul Whiteman, a favorite punching bag of contemporary Jazz critics for daring to call himself the "King of Jazz". Overall a terrific CD for 20's fans and a good CD to give people something different to listen to besides Rap and Rock. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It would be impossible to capture all the things that make the game great--the drama, the humor, the roar of the crowd--on one album, but the folks behind this sprawling collection come pretty darn close to hitting for the cycle. Old-time faves like Les Brown's "Joltin' Joe DiMaggio" segue into modern tributes such as Bill Slayback's "Move Over Babe, Here Comes Henry," while such tangential yet groovy chestnuts like the Intruders' soul standard "Love Is Like a Baseball Game" and Rockin' Richie Ray's utterly unhinged "Baseball Card Lover" are guaranteed to make even nonfans cock an ear. Interspersed among the songs are spoken interludes, ranging from classic comedy bits like Abbott & Costello's "Who's on First" to moving memories such as Lou Gehrig's famed farewell speech. I had hoped that the rendition of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" would have been recorded with a baseball stadium organ and maybe even with the crowd singing along. The guitar version was cute but not in the "ballpark" of reality.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice collection, but...
This collection of exciting arrangements wonderfully executed by professional players is unfortunately marred by old technology and carelessness. The short, twenty nine minute CD seems to be copied from an LP.The pops, clicks, distortion and glitches are all there. At one point you can even hear the annoying pitch wow commonly heard on LPs pressed out of round. The tone arm is obviously being dragged right and then left as the off center groove dictates the key.5-0 out of 5 stars Merle at his best

5-0 out of 5 stars Andrew Sisters 50th Anniversary Collection
While the title implies that there is more than one cd, and there is indeed only one, it is packed with my favorite songs, and some new favorites that I had never heard before!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my very favorite CD's
If you don't alreay own this. You have no idea what you are missing.A couple of my favorites on this cd are 'Beat me Daddy 8 to the Bar' and 'Corns for my Country' two songs I had never heard until I bought this cd. I bought the cd for 'Dont Sit Under the Apple Tree'and 'Boogie Woodgie Bugle Boy'.Those 4 songs are great. Another great song on this cd is 'Rum and Coca-Cola'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Patty, LaVerne and Maxine sing away the blues
With their toothy smiles and pompadours the Andrews Sisters personified the decade of the 1940's, including yeomen's work during World War II entertaining the troops. Actually, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" was recorded in January of 1941 for the Abbott & Costello movie "Buck Privates," well before Pearl Harbor, but certainly "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me)" is the quintessential WWII song. The Andrews Sisters burst on the scene in 1937 when they turned "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen," a Yiddish musical song, into the most popular song in the country. Over the years they proved them were as strong with a ballad, like "I Can Dream Cant I" as they were with novelty songs like "Rum and Coca-Cola" (where the sisters do Jamaican one-liners). No, I have no idea when LaVerne or Maxine are singing lead instead of Patty and I certainly cannot explain the difference between Vic Schoen & His Orchestra versus Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra. All I know is the Andrews Sisters set the bar for female sibling trios and outperformed the McGuire Sisters and Fontane Sisters put together. This album features a dozen of their biggest hits from 1937 to 1949, although it is missing a few choice songs ("I Wanna Be Loved" comes to mind), including those recorded with Bing Crosby ("Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive" being the biggie), although those are certainly available elsewhere.I think America's love affair with vocal harmonies pretty much begins with the Andrews Sisters, who are like the fairy godmothers for the Everyly Brothers, The Mamas & The Papas, and anybody else who comes to mind. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars If it's your first purchase, maybe
As another reviewer says, there are more and more collections of this music available. That being so, this one loses much of its luster. In the 20s there were as many different genres of music as there are today, and this RCA package focuses on songs from their vault, with no other connection or continuity. Thus you get the soggy country of Vernon Dahlhart, the music hall of Fanny Brice and Gertrude Lawrence, a true pop classic by Helen Kane, some sterling 20s jazz, Maurice Chevalier, and then Geroge Gershwin. But some thematic structure would be nice; this feels like rolling down the car radio dial. And just as there are always stations that you skip past as soon as you hear their flavor, there will probably be selections here you'd rather not listen to.

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE Don't be fooled, these ARE NOT originals!
I looked at the glowing reviews for this CD set and failed to read them carefully -- one reviewer said "Brits Ken Barnes and Pete Moore selected a large number [of Bing's songs] and added full stereo orchestral and choral accompaniment. This gives us Bing in prime voice, but with more modern arrangement." Therefore, if you want REAL Bing, as HE recorded the songs, this CD is not for you. The songs have now been Nat King Cole-ified or smooth jazz-ified with 80s/90s straight tone a capella style singers. There's nothing wrong with these styles of jazz, but they're just not Bing! Absolutely no vibrato from the backup singers, horrors!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Bing Crosby [2 CDs]
The "Best of Crosby" title does not match the content, as too many songs seem to be just filling space.Nobody would ever rank the opening song about golf, for example, as one of Crosby's best.On the other hand, his command of so many pieces, both jazz and pop, help one recall just good he was/is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good sampling of the mature Bing
I would quibble that this CD represents "the best" of Bing Crosby, even though the material covered here is pretty darn good. All of these standards were recorded long past Crosby's vocal heyday, which would have been the 1932-45 era, but if you're a fan of the mature Bing, then this is right up your alley. This is a pleasing introduction for those who don't have other Crosby CD's in your collection or who are weak in the post-1950 period of his career. It contains his standard hits like "True Love" which have been recycled time and again on other anthologies, but it also contains some little-known gems. Read more

If you ever need an emotional and spiritual pick-up, then this CD is for you. So much unknownn talent here. The Birmingham Freedom Choir would certainly give Kirk Franklin and Walter Hawkins a run for the money and the Montgomery Movement Singers have a singing style that's haunting in its simplicity. Like Brother Stack (BTW, I'm also a native of Spartanburg, SC, let's hang out and chat about this CD when I'm in town again), I've used this CD in my classes and my students have been moved by MLK's brief address ("If you can't run-WALK, and if you can't run-CRAWL, just KEEP MOVING ON!"). Raplh Abernathy's address is also surprisingly good and while the martyred legend Medgar Evers was not a spellbinding speaker, his sincerity comes through. The beauty of this CD is the courage the speakers and singers had in the danger of what they faced. This will inspire listeners to similar courage in the problems they may face today.

I simple love this CD and all of the 26 songs. There is not one throw away song or segment on the CD recording. The CD chronicles the modern day civil rights movement through song from 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, to 1960 and the student lead demonstrations in Nashville, Tenn. to the 1963 Birmingham Mass Meetings. The artist are regional and have a wonderful quality to the singing.A must have......I play this CD to my high school students every year and they are mesmerized.I play the CD in the teacher's lounge and they all want copies.I used some of the songs on the CD in a talk at my local Unitarian Universalist Church and got a standing ovation.I never tire of listening to the richness of the songs. ... Editorial Review

Bing Crosby has been called the "Voice of the Century," a title that's rooted in considerably more art and accomplishment than mere show-biz hype. Others may have scaled more spectacular peaks during the 20th century, but one could make a well grounded argument that without Crosby's pioneering vocal artistry the careers of Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley might well have never blossomed. This 50-track double-disc anthology chronicles the most productive years of the crooner's career, a period that spans the early '30s to the mid-'50s; his final years at RCA largely rested on the laurels garnered herein. His rich, effortlessly dreamy baritone has become a pop-culture cliché, but it was in fact as radically pioneering in its day as anything the King or the Chairman of the Board would muster in later decades. Radio and modern electronic recording were in their infancy on many of the '30s hits here, yet Crosby mastered both with preternatural grace--and an innate, jazz-born sense of timing--he later brought to his successful film and TV careers. What's remarkable here is the breadth of styles and influences Crosby's dulcet tones make there own here. The dizzying slate here includes standards and early hits ("Star Dust" and "Where the Blue of the Night" in Decca re-recordings of his original Brunswick sides), country-western ("New San Antonio Rose," "Don't Fence Me In"), island exotica ("Sweet Leilani," "Blue Hawaii"), Irish affectations ("McNamara's Band," "Galway Bay"), holiday favorites ("Silent Night," "White Christmas") and film hits ("Pennies From Heaven," "Swinging On a Star"), performances that represent the very cornerstone of American vocal tradition. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Sampler!
I bought 9 copies of this - one for myself, one for each of my seven siblings, and one for my parents.Growing up, we had lots of Bing Crosby music in the house (along with various other wonderful artists).I gravitated to Bing, and my siblings remember that - and were tickled to receive these 'samplers' during in Bing's 100th year. Why? Because, while Bing wasn't their favorite, he was *A* favorite of theirs, yet they had nothing of his on CD!The variety of themes reminds us how vast Bing's repetoire was.5-0 out of 5 stars Two and one half hours of recorded bliss!!!!
For years,I have been searching for a comprehensive collection of Bing Crosby's Decca recordings.Since his career at Decca spanned a quarter century, and because he was such a prolific artist, it seemed that I might never find what I was looking for.But this collection, released in 2003 has it all. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent edition.Great songs, Great quality.
These two cd's are fantastic. Excellent quality with beautiful songs.A good edition. I'm on my way to purchasing all the Bing Crosby cd's which will probably take a lifetime. But this edition put a good dent in the time it'll take to acquire them all.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WORTH BUYING
I actually suggest to you to buy this two disc set and make your own80 minutes cd with it.I for instance like the WHITE CHRISTMAS rendition with PEGGY LEE more than the 1942 or the 1947 version,it's a matter of taste. The songs recorded with the ANDREW SISTERS have a special flavour and have great nostalgic appeal.I was glad to hear many songs that i didn't know BING recorded like A MARSHMALLOW WORLD and CHRISTMAS IS A-COMIN.I wonder why they did not include FAITH OF OUR FATHERS in the collection.Anyway,if you consider yourself a fan of BING,you will buy this and you won't be disapointed. The booklet is also very interesting to read, telling the stories of those recordings collected through many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Father Christmas' Complete Decca Recordings
Bing's complete Decca Christmas collection! What more could you ask for?Well if you want to be particular I would have loved to see all of the songs that have appeared on the legendary Merry Christmas/White Christmas album(s) (there have been several varations over the years) but I guess songs like Danny Boy and Faith of Our Fathers don't technically qualify as Christmas songs. That said it's as close to perfect as you can get.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Recording
The fun thing about this CD is that most of the songs are not traditional Christmas songs, which get so over-played during the holidays. So these cuts add a fresh dimention to your holiday mix if you drop this CD into your random CD carosel.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this collection!
As a collector of Christmas music - I LOVE the fact that this album is loaded with "non-traditional" songs. It's not the same old stuff that every artist puts on a Christmas album, yet the songs sound distinctly "Christmassy".Bing's voice is like a big velvety cloak that wraps you in Christmas spirit, and the energetic vocals of the Andrews Sister's will have you tapping your toes. This collection is classic and timeless, and evokes images of a simpler time.It will be a much-played selection in my Christmas collection. In fact - I think I'd better go order more as gifts or my sister might try to swipe it from me!

5-0 out of 5 stars The original King and Queens of Christmas music
Although Christmas music has been around for humdreds of years, it's popularity now owas a lot to Bing Crosby and (to a lesser extent) the Andrews sisters, with the outstanding and extremely popular Chrismas songs they recorded in the 1940's.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Item for any Al Jolson Fan
I was so pleased to receive this item as a gift for Fathers Day. This 3CD Deluxe Edition contains many of the songs I have listened to from The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again, but are in there original presentations free from the Movie makers arrangements to compliment the story line. It was so refreshing to hear such a crisp and clear delivery from the Legendary Al Jolson accompanied with outstanding instrumentals. Many of Al's early works are included in this set, but with outstanding clarity. I have heard some of his early deliveries and the sound quality wasn't very good when reproduced on a CD. I was very impressed with all of the sound reproductions included in this outstanding 3CD set. If you are an Al Jolson Fan, you will certainly do yourself a huge disservice if you do not purchase this item. It is the best set of Al Jolson recordings that I have ever heard.
