4-0 out of 5 stars OK, But Not As Good As the Original
It's OK, but doesn't have the quality of Sousa's original songs which were also played by a United States Marine Band.

I was totally happy with the CD.It was everything I expected it to be.Thanks Much

5-0 out of 5 stars This is so great!
This music speaks to my inner being, my father was a Marine with the ETC, and it was not an easy time. Music like this helped him think about how the best things in life are two doors down on the left, just a shade away from peace. I love this music, track 13 speaks to me so much that I am not sure if I have the time to listen as much as I want to! Such great music! ... Read more

My father was a Marine in the ETC, he told me stories about how they went floor to floor checking for bad guys humming this music. I think it is great music to listen to, I really like track 3, it says so much in the title alone. I hope everybody like this music as much as I do! ... Read more

uses a review of a compilation of fight songs to take the opportunity to bash UCLA and USC's fight songs.Gimme a break.
2-0 out of 5 stars Greatest college fight songs
The music on this CD was not very good. The renditions of YEA, ALABAMA and BOOMER SOONER were played at too slow of a tempo.
3-0 out of 5 stars Meh
I thought that most of the selections were well done, but there were many flaws.USC's fight song?Their fight song consists of three notes played in the same order over and over again.Though I love that Fight for California showed up high, I was annoyed to see UCLA's fight song which was brutally ripped off from Cal's "we three sons of california".And the recording was absolutely awful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Makes a Scot proud
The cheapest 2-disc set I have ever purchased in my life.Very good quality, awesome songs.Scotland the Brave is played at least three times in some form or another.A lot of well-known favorites: Amazing Grace, Cockney Jocks, etc.I'm actually playing some songs from the discs at my wedding. Very upbeat, traditional bagpipe and drum music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pipes and Drums Potporri
These two CDs are a grab-bag selection of Scottish pipe band recordings going back over the years. Most of them are civilian bands which play in the competitonal style. While I'm not a big advocate of collections like this, prefering the original recordings if possible; many of these tracks are no longer available. Others may still be out there. At least the bands are listed and the tunes they play appear to be accurate as well. This is not often done with these types of potporri collections where bands and music are often just thrown together in slip-shod fashion. The last few tracks on the 2nd CD are interesting becasue they are the massed bands, pipes and drums of the Scottish Division. These selections are no longer available commercially.Buy this collection if you are a pipe band nut and just want a lot of good pipe music by different bands. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away
While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible.Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable.I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Edinburgh Military Tattoo
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing.Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way.The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day.Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands andmusicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item.It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army.Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes.Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not like being there, but a good appetizer
The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Just give us a sermon instead
There are of course, several songs on this CD which are actually songs, i.e., tracks 2-7 and 9-10. But Lee Greenwood only wrote one of them, and it is the least melodic and the most hokey.
4-0 out of 5 stars We should all be real Patriots
Lee Greenwood at his best. A real classic in American music. John Phillip Sousa would have loved it. It exhudes the kind of Patriotim that your parents and grandparents knew and understood. Now it is time to "rally-round-the-flag" in our generation with Lee Greenwood. It makes you feel good about yourself and your country!

Editorial Review

Let's get right to the crux of the matter: Can the University of Michigan band really do justice to school songs from Big 10 rivals such as the University of Illinois, Northwestern, and the University of Iowa? The answer is mixed. The University of Wisconsin warhorse "On, Wisconsin" is played with verve and given a nifty arrangement, but the brassy Wolverine partisans don't really put their heart into cross-state rival Michigan State University's "MSU Fight Song." Road tripping from UCLA to the University of Maine, the UM band tackles staples ("Notre Dame Victory March," "Eyes of Texas," "Anchors Away," the stirring "Varsity") and sleepers ("Down, Down the Field," "Fight On, Pennsylvania"). Only someone who, as was once said of Michigan alumnus Gerald Ford, "played too many games without a helmet," would listen to Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Old LP Re-Issue on CD
This is a collection of old LP recordings that were originally released on the Oylimpic Label some years ago.It has floated around since and has now come out on CD.The CD lists the German Air Force Band, but this group only plays in half of the selections listed. The other half is from another old Olympic Label recording with the Hoch Und Deutschmiester band of Austria.
2-0 out of 5 stars Quality?
Good representation of melodies. It would have been more enjoyable if they had used a better recording device to capture the sound.I think that wax cylinders went out of favor back in the 1920's.(Very limited dynamic and acustic range)Presentation is slightly better than the "average" high school drum and bugle corps.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise from the Army Band.
The Forward March CD is a great collection of marches.I have listened to the CD three times in the last few weeks and my students have replayed the CD over and over at the band room.A worthwhile addition to your library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Altissimo! Finally Has a Winner!
Finally a CD from Altissimo! of decent length with a solid march program.Instead of the usual patriotic dribble that we normally get on this label at last we have some real marches! Many of the selections are well known, but there are a few gems here. The performances are first-rate as to be expected by this premier band. For a change it looks like Altissimo! put together a winner from the extensive library of the bands' recorded music. Most likely none of the pieces played here are current recordings, but are taken from the bands own library which is what Altissimo! does with all of their products. In other words this is not an original recording.Still, the material is good and worthwhile. The program notes are better than usual as well.Altissimo! is slowly getting more professional in their products. Its been a gradual process indeed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally Found It!!
I have been searching for a CD of this recording for ages! In 1971, when it was originally released, I was 10 years old and couldn't appreciate the album that my brother played endlessly. As I got older I started to miss it. I found a cassette copy several years ago, but am afraid to use it anymore for fear of it breaking. My brother told me he had found a copy of the CD at his local Borders, and since I don't have one in my neighborhood I checked good old Amazon!! I have just ordered and I am looking forward to receiving it. I'm not a music critic, but after hearing many pipe and drum recordings, this has got to be the best I've ever heard.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thousand horse cavalry charge!
I judge bagpipes by Scotland the Brave. This is magnificant; like a thousand horse cavalry charge. The only problem is that, at 45 seconds, it is too short.
5-0 out of 5 stars Updated Amazing Grace
Having reviewed the original "Amazing Grace" recording by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from 1971 it seems that Amazon.com now offers a series of recordings that the bands released in the late 70 and 1980s under the same title. The first half of this CD contains tracks from a 1976 release of the bands entitled "The Lengendary Amazing Grace"In addition to a fine updated version of the now famous tune four years after its original world wide hit, this part of the CD contains some interesting selections for band and pipes. "Una Palma Blanca" is a true example of how the RSDG bands went to great lengths to explore the full combined sound. The regimental band supports the pipes with a variety of modern sounds including an electronic bass guitar which many military bands in fact use for concert purposes today providing as it does a useful Continuo bass line for a military band."Theme in Glory" and "Turn on the Sun" are additional examples of just how good the RSDG bands had mastered the concept of combing their resources. These are truly exciting pieces to listen too.The regimental band shows its stuff with "Rockout" an arrangement of classic old rock music themes. The pipes and drums provide three medleys and are simply surperb. One can hear that a distinctive change had taken place in the ensemble sound of the pipe band since 1971.The RSDG drummers have incorporated the use of their tenor drums to creat an amazing drummers' accompaniment to the pipes. This innovation would become standard in the piping world, but it owes its origins largely to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards pipes and drums.Listen to how magificent the pipe band sounds when they first enter to the 6/8 medley starting with "Macneils of Ugdale".You won't find a better sound even today. The Retreat medley starting with "Lochanside" is also amazing. Its worth getting the CD just for those tracks as well as the others.Perhaps the most haunting combined tune is an arrangment of Handel's "Largo" with the solo pipes doubling for the voice parts.Truly beautiful and moving.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas from the Isles
On a fluke, I ran a search here on Amazon.com for a CD with "Christmas bagpipes", and this selection, "Highland Christmas", was the first returned match. After listening to the samples, I decided to order it.I have listened to it all the way through only once since it arrived in the mail today, but I'm going to have a hard time getting my other Christmas CDs back in the stereo! This CD is great!I cannot put into words what a great holiday disc this is.As another reviewer mentioned, if you like bagpipes, and you're a big Christmas fan, this disc is for you.Don't waste any more time - get yours!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very unusual and very good
I played this as background music at my annual Christmas dinner for friends and it got lots of comments from people who generally would say nothing about music. It is extremely beautiful and so unusual to hear ourfavorite Christmas songs played on the pipes.I highly recommend this toanyone but especially to those who like something unusal played on theBagpipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Bagpipes!
This is a great, quirky little CD.The very idea of Christmas carols on the Highland Pipes is bizarre, but Iain Mac Hargmanages to pull it off very well. Each song starts with the familiar drone, and then a spritelylittle carol appears. The songs are quick paced and fun, with a fewtraditional pieces thrown in for balance. If you like Christmas carols, and you like Bagpipes, then I highly recommend this CD. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best but a good one
In my opinion, this CD is not the best one for military marches but it is at least a good one. There is a very wide choice of tunes and they are well played. It is not always the orchestration that I prefer but I am sure that many people will like this orchestration. It is also an inexepensive CD. Furthermore, if your consider that you receive 40 marches for this price, it is a best buy, I recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed listener
I have been listening to military band music for years, and am rarely disappointed. However, this compendium of music by the U.S. Navy, Army, and Marine bands and associated choral groups is not to my taste. Many of the arrangements are strange, and there is much too much vocal music when what I want to hear is the bands play.I would not have bought this album hhad I known beforehand what I know now.

Its nice to see these old RCA recordings brought out on CD.These were originally released on LP back in the early 1960s to help finance the Kennedy Center in DC.They were popular recordings then.Unfortunatley only three out of the original four are offered here.Missing is the US Army Band which also recorded as part of this series. The sound qaulity has been left largely as it was, which wes pretty good for early 1960s.The only problem with the original recordings was that they tended to sound poor on the inner tracks of the LP.Fortunately that problem no longer exists on CD.Due to the format there tends to be some repeat material here. How many times do we have to hear the national anthem played by each band!Still, there are some good selections played when these bands were in their prime and larger than they are today. Its good to see recordings being re-issued on US service bands other than Altissimo! which tends to use just in-the-can material from band libraries. Here we have the original stuff played in a manner which is no longer done today. For those seeking vintage recordings of US service bands you can't go wrong here. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think this set is wonderful. from my own personal point of view, there are much worse bagpipe sets out there. I know and love this type of music, but this tops all my other bagpipe CDs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrendus!
This album is simply awful. I was looking for some scottish vibes but I really don't want to be listening to this terible screechy music. It is painful to my ears, and I strongly recommend that you NOT buy it. Instead, If you want something irish, try LOREENA MCKENNITT. (...). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs doon
Ach!T'were pipin' music I were wantin', not ELO does "Rebel Piper".I mean, disco bagpipes?Good lord.Yes, the cheap-hotel-lounge-rock-band backups were grim indeed; the full orchestra numbers weren't much better. In fact, the only reason I didn't give this one star was because a (very) few of the selections weren't TOO bad.
4-0 out of 5 stars Highland Cathedral - Pipes and Drums
I like it, up lifting, and exciting music.Dont like two of the tracks much with horns and band, but thats ok.

3-0 out of 5 stars Yawn...
The tracks that are worth listening to on this CD are done far better on their more recent CD, "Parallel Tracks." Why they bothered with arranging the Titanic theme is beyond me... Not a bad CD, but they've done better. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Title is a bit misleading
I was very pleased with the original volume of German Military Marches. There were some differing opinions, in regards to the sound quality of that cd, but nothing that took away from the selections.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Presentation
As manager of "The Oktoberfest Webring," I am always on the lookout for good CD's of music suitable for Oktoberfest celebrations. This CD definitely fills the bill. The musicians and their conductor are thoroughly professional and do an outstanding job--which, to be sure, is what one would expect from the German Air Force Band. The blend and balance between instruments is excellent. With the exception of "Deutschland Ueber Alles," the songs are mostly light-hearted, breezy arrangements that are executed with military precision. At the same time, they are very much in the traditional Oktoberfest oom-pah band mood and spirit. An interesting and pleasing combination! With the exception of "Deutschland Ueber Alles," which sounds slightly distorted, the sound quality is superb. I highly recommend this CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars German Band Music --- "Beer Garden" Style
If you're looking for heavy full-range German march music, this is probably not the album for you. Also, the recording quality is a bit tinny here and there, especially in the recording of the "Deutschland Lied." As my heading implies, the perfomance style is much lighter and is more like what you'd hear at a local Oktoberfest beer garden. The music is, on the whole, still enjoyable and the vocals are also on the light side. Back in the late 1950s through the early 1990s, the radio station KTYM broadcast German music programs on Saturdays and Sundays hosted by Fred Schell and Peter Teichmann. On their programs, they played music that sounded much like what you'll hear on this CD. While I don't think of this music as something you'd march to, it is the kind you'd relax to while sipping from your bierkrug and enjoying a Thueringer bratwurst or Muenchner wiesswurst and a side of sauerkraut with friends. On Sundays when I was a kid, my dad would barbeque on the porch. We kids would play in the yard while his German friends would sit in the shade enjoying their beer and listening to this music played on the portable stereo set my dad brought outside on a LONG extension cord. I'm still in the habit of listening to this music on weekends. It still brings back some nice memories. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marches to its own drummer...
March of the Falsettos is one of those rare anomalies in musical theater. It's a show that is catchy, infectious, and utterly enjoyable without being Disney-produced schlock. William Finn is truly a master of interesting compositions, and I think this cycle, this show in particular, is the pinnacle of his work.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Crown Jewel of Finn's Work
Although it is the second chapter in the "Marvin" musical trilogy, "March of the Falsettos" is, perhaps, the best known of William Finn's works thanks to 20 years of continued revivals in regional theaters around the country."In Trousers," the first part of the story, is the most obscure."Falsettoland" followed "March..." ten years later and then was paired with "March..." as a two act Broadway musical titled "Falsettos" which won critical acclaim as well as a Tony Award for Finn's wonderful score."March of the Falsettos" tells the story of Marvin, a previously closeted gay man who leaves his wife and son for his male lover, Whizzer Brown. This sets into motion an alternately hilarious and touching turn of events as Marvin's wife, Trina, finds love in the arms of Marvin's psychiatrist, Mendel, and all the adults concerned try to do what's best for Marvin and Trina's 10-year-old son, Jason, who turns out to be smarter than any of his extended family."March..." is about love and loss, about ecstasy and jealousy, but finally about parents and children. When all is said and done, Marvin shares the stage with his son, Jason, in a touching, quiet finale."Sing for yourself as we march along," Marvin encourages his son, and therein lies Finn's message: embrace your individuality.Being brave enough to choose what you know is right for you is never easy, but essential.
