3-0 out of 5 stars Reviewing "Voice Lessons To Go"
I waited to review this CD.There is my feed back. This Vocalizing CD has good points to it as Ariella Vaccarino keeps it simple. However, it is annoying for those of us who are advanced or professional opera singers to have Ariella's comments in the background when the point of vocalizing is to exercise the voice well in peace and with full concentration. The over explaining I can understand as she needed to consider that every one can purchase her CD and they might not know operatic terms. The other point which I feel is lacking on this CD is that she does not take the voice high enough - for the over low parts one can just drop out as she suggests. The reason I purchased this CD was to have the exercises there when there is no piano to vocalize with.It is a good CD for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Get What You Pay For?
Yes.The cd has clear warm up and breathing exercises. There is no long talk filler or promises of greatness. You will need a few lessons with a real teacher to check your form and technique. You will find the exercises of a professional teacher exactly what is on this cd.Great for practicing in the car and warming up before a show.

My husband and I really enjoyed this CD. We're ballroom beginners and have trouble finding music to practice to. This CD has great songs (with singing - neither one of us cares for the "instrumental" versions of popular songs) and it allows us to practice dancing to a variety of tempi.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great collection of music!
If you are looking for a collection of standards that are by the origional artists, this is a great CD!I'm dissapointed how many collections are out there where the music is watered down versions that sound much like elevator music. This collection should definitely be apart of yours. It's great to finally be able to dance to the origionals that made the dancing popular to begin with.I should point out that this isn't a collection of greatest hits, but it shouldn't be overlooked.

I'm an intermediate level bass player backing up a praise band at church and a company sponsored big band, but I'd never soloed or played a melody till I took a jazz class that used this book.5-0 out of 5 stars A First Class Learning Aid
This is a terrific purchase for intermediate level players. The selections are in relatively slow tempos and there is a wealth of information if you are a multi-instrumentalist. The CD recording is good and allows you tomute either the bass or piano acoompaniment as they are recorded onseparate channels. There is a recommended discography for each track. Myonly criticism is that it would be better to have the tracks recordedtwice, once with just piano, bass and drums (what you get now) and recordedagain with a lead instrument playing the notated themes in the suppliedbooklet.

4-0 out of 5 stars AN OPERA OPUS THAT'S A MUST!
Oh, such letter-perfect perfection! This marvel features a two-hour-plus showcase of well-known arias from "Cosi Fan Tuti," "Aida," "Carmen," "Madame Butterfly" and "The Barber of Seville." It also comes with a book --- 762 pages of remarkable facts, figures and illustrations.Encore!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is, by far, the best introduction to opera on the market. It also contains some gem performances for anyone who already has a serious opera collection. Several tracks on this collection of mostly Eastern European singers rival those of their Western counterparts. This is a collection for EVERYONE - from the opera novice to the person who has long collected all the major Western stars. At this price, it's the best opera bargain in the world. GET IT NOW!!! Thank you, Naxos! I hope that some of these Eastern European singers at last get the attention they deserve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Modestly Priced Favorite Arias Collection!!!
I received this as my 20th birthday gift from my bestfriend and I was amazed at the quality and the content of this CD. Some of the arias which I am immensely fond of are included, i.e. "Habanera" from Bizet's "Carmen." And who would have guessed that the soprano on track 10 performing Queen of the Night's Aria from Mozart's "Die Zauberflote" was none other than Hellen Kwon? Amazing!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Mr. Super Hip" is makes the whole CD worth it
Suffice it to say that this is an excellent tool for beginning improvisers.More experienced players who have a fondness for the seventies rock/Fender Rhodes sound will LOVE Mr. Super Hip.It's just cheesy enough to be cool, and this sus chord thing at the end of the form was so juicy it just about made me bang my head into a wall.Highly recommended for all beginners and anyone like me with an open mind toward the retro thing....

    Editorial Review

Is it a two-CD set with a particularly thick booklet, or a 562-page book with a compilation album attached? Either way, the unpretentious text by Keith Anderson offers an introduction to the lives and works of dozens of composers, together with recommended recordings from the Naxos and Marco Polo catalogs. Anderson includes a useful 59-page glossary of musical terms and an extensive listing of classical pieces used in films. The odd thing about the 36 extracts and complete pieces on the CDs is that they do not form an A-to-Z at all. Rather, they are arranged chronologically, from 1,000-year-old Gregorian chant to the opening movement of contemporary composer Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Between these two points is the early music of Palestrina and Byrd; the Baroque glories of Vivaldi and Bach; the 19th-century Romantic masters, from Beethoven to Tchaikovsky; and such 20th-century greats as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. Opera, song, and chamber music are barely represented, but only so much can fit into 151 minutes. Essentially a deluxe sampler of the vast Naxos catalogue, the discs offer a good introduction to some of the most famous and melodic music ever composed, while the book will be very useful to newcomers to the potentially confusing world of classical music. This set features more than two hours of the finest music from across the centuries by such composers as Schubert, Chopin, Mozart, Handel, Stravinsky and Glass. The set also comes with a 562-page illustrated book, detailing the lives of hundreds of composers, a5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tracks -- Great Value -- Great Book, Who Can Complain?
Naxos is a fabulous label -- you will not get samples of the best classical music through the ages at no better price. These tracks are as good as any of the over-priced major orchestras and in some cases better. This is a great starter set for a beginner or anyone who just wants to "taste" the classics. If you prefer Opera I would suggest the A to Z of Opera -- most of the tracks on A to Z Classical are orchestral. I was so impressed with this collection that I purchased the Discover the Classics Vol's 1-3 which will give you a more detailed look at the great classics.Take a look at the Naxos web site at NAXOSUSA.COM -- what you will see will blow your mind -- there are literally thousands of pieces that you could listen too!

4-0 out of 5 stars At this price, how can one complain?
This is pretty much a CD version of a mini-Naxos and Marco Polo catalog. All the pieces and extracts are ordered chronologically on the 2 CDs and are of very acceptable quality, but don't expect excellence in every track. Personally, I was particularly disappointed with one of my favourite Pachelbel pieces. The Naxos Canon & Gigue lacks all the emotion of my favourite versions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
Rob Kapilow's lecture of Mozart's Jupiter Symphony is very educational and entertaining. Even listeners who are familiar with this masterpiece will find much to learn and enjoy here, and virtually hear it with a new set of ears. Years ago Leonard Bernstein also recorded classical albums with lectures, such as Beethoven's 3rd & 5th symphonies, Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique, and others. They were all wonderful, and hopefully Sony will release them again. It's nice that Rob Kapilow has picked up the torch from Bernstein, I hope that many more installments will follow. Rob, uses both his piano and a full symphony orchestra to illustrate his points along the way. A complete performance of the Jupiter Symphony concludes the CD.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Frank's view
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one. Read more

On one occasion I had some beginners to call for so I needeed some new tunes. This record was right on the money, Get this one for your square dance needs. You will be glad that you did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless Calls
I bought this CD expecting to use it at my square dance club, but it was worthless. There is no explanation of the calls. I asked an experienced caller to listen to it and he could make no sense of it. The first 6 tracks do provide background music if you're satisfied with that, which I am not. I recommend you tell shoppers this CD can't be used for Western Square Dancing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Western Square Dance
The music without calls (tracks 1 through 6) is good if you want background music for patter calling. The 7 through 12 tracks that have calling are not modern western square dancing calls. The calls are eastern square dance (barn dance) and not well suited to using the CD for modern Mainstream demonstration dancing in the absence of a caller. I find the first 6 music tracks useful (no calls), but have no use for the last 6 tracks. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and engaging
This CD combines a lecture and musical examples by Ron Kapilow with a recording of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.Mr. Kapilow's talk is interesting and he is an engaging speaker. He briefly discusses the structure of the movements and points out details that "make it great."Mr. Kapilow also plays short passages of EKN re-written in a correct but more pedestrian style which highlight Mozart's genius. These negative examples are quite interesting and helped me hear this very familiar piece with new ears.

I have been listening to Eine Kleine Nachtsmusik for five decades now but after listening to Kapilow's analysis of it and his guide to its structures and subtleties, I now feel as if I am hearing it for the first time. These insights not only deepen one's appreciation of glorious music such as this familiar Mozart masterpiece, they also educate the amateur ear to listen to other music with greater understanding of what has gone into it, thus enormously increasing one's musical pleasure.Ideal listening for the classroom, the old folks' home and just about everything and everybody in between! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fulfilling Overview of the Baroque Era in Music and Words
Yet another great bargain-priced package from Naxos effectively provides an overview of the rich Baroque period with two discs containing more than 2 hours of music and a comprehensive, 140-page primer booklet. Compiled by music historian Clive Unger-Hamilton, the collection is well-chosen to represent the many different facets of the era without recycling the more obvious candidates like Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons". The quality of the playing and singing is top-notch throughout, and the program contains quite a smorgasbord of pieces from dramatic opera arias to harpsichord pieces (sometimes played on authentic instruments, other times on modern grands) to full-blown choruses. Standout tracks include Allegri's "Miserere mei" with an ethereal boy treble soloist; two arias sung by soprano Ingrid Kertesi, in particular, Almirena's lament, "Lascia ch'io pianga" from Handel's "Rinaldo"; and a lovely "When I am laid in earth" from Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" performed by soprano Kym Amps. The choral pieces can be astounding from Bach's "St Matthew Passion (BWV 244)" performed by the large Hungarian Festival Chorus and full symphony orchestra to the eight voices that wrap themselves around "For unto us a child is born" from Handel's "Messiah".
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to the Music of the Baroque Era
This is one of a series of the'Discover ...' 2 CD sets -- at super-budget price -- from Naxos that makes use of complete movements of music from the era in question. It is accompanied by an excellent booklet - a thick one! - with an explanatory essay that gives background on the music as well as blow-by-blow descriptions of the music being presented. All the selections (from such composers as Monteverdi, Handel, Bach, Scarlatti, Schtz, Purcell, Corelli, Pachelbel, Charpentier, et al.) are from Naxos's extensive library of recorded music and as far as I can tell all the performances are top-notch.

I'm really enthusiastic about these CDs and booklet. I've had it for a few weeks now, in which I've explored Medieval and Renaissance music much more deeply than this little book and CD set. Yet I'm very glad I started with these.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Written and Sound Portrait of One of Our Most Important Composers
"Contemporary classical music which genuinely touches people is rare, but the rapt, contemplative music of Arvo Prt communicates readily, and without pandering to the demands of a mass audience." -- Nick Kimberley

2-0 out of 5 stars Same Old Same Old
If someone asked me what album I'd recommend to get an average feel for what Dave's records are like, I'd recommend this one, because it averages just about everything he does. His latest albums seem to follow a formula of certain grooves that feature his spactacular playing (no doubt about it), but I bought this formula in the last few studio albums already.Trust me, if you have two or three of Weckl's previous works - you already have this album as well!

3-0 out of 5 stars End of the road (?)
I own every album the band put out in the past and obviously a lot of jazz and fusion records with Dave at the drums. I say this last release from Dave isn't bad, but it's not that memorable in my opinion. It's a little bit slick. Everything falls in place, everything is perfect ... there's not fire. You listen to it and it's gone like fresh water, it doesn't leave you almost nothing. The best albums from the band are still Hard Wired, Master plan and maybe Rhythm from the soul I'd say (and the live one). Especially Hard wired. It's not even Dave's fault in my opinion. I think that in this kind of fusion music after few albums you come to the end of the road. Simply you don't have nothing more to say and so you can only stay there going nearer jazz in one album or near "rock" in the other. Sometimes it is convincing, sometimes a little less. This time to me it's a little less, this time the music lacks a little bit of personality. It's too slick, too educated, to synthetic music the one contained in this cd. There's not too much fire. Obviously the guys plays great bla bla bla bla. But when you have thousands of cds with great players involved you need to find great music in it. Knowing that these guys are exceptional musicians (and they are for real expecially Dave) it's not enought for me. If I'd be in Dave's shoes probably I'd take some time to think about the future of this band, about choosing with great attention what material to play next with it. Or the toy could be broken.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dave delivers...
This is an excellent album by a fusion band. For the other reviewers who are looking for something "different", I think they are looking in the wrong place. The band's charter is sophisticated time modulations, complex harmony, and plenty of groove... and they deliver.Strong song writing is found throughout the CD, and the melodies quite memorable. It might take more than a quick listen to each of the 20-second song samples to really appreciate the music. After listening to the entire CD several time, the material really grew on me.The band is air-tight and Dave's playing is better than ever. His drumming in inventive and tasteful.
