5-0 out of 5 stars What?No Babs!
Everyone's bound to have quibbles with a collection such as this one.I would much prefer to have Mabel Mercer's version of "Ballad of the Sad Young Men," for instance (although Rod McKuen's is lovely), and I regret the absence of certain gay "standards" such as Mott the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes" and Dusty Springfield's "Quiet, Please, There's a Lady on Stage."But it's all fun, not mention educational, and I'm grateful to Marshall Blonstein and Richard Oliver for a magnificent effort, which is destined to take its place next to classics of the literature such as William J. Mann's "Behind the Screen" and "The Gay and Lesbian Literary Heritage"--not to mention the collected works of Barbara Streisand! To underscore their sense of history, the producers have included a near-100 page booklet with the 4-disc set that even features a bibliography of recommended reading and viewing. There are also generous notes on the songs and songsters, period essays, and some great photos. There are, as well, a few miscalculations, including a numerical listing of the songs in the booklet that doesn't correspond to the list on the box.The recording dates for some of the songs are given as "unknown" (where did these transfers come from?), and the dating itself (a "Cabaret" medley from the `20s?) is eccentric. But these are minor, well, quibbles, and I admire Blonstein and Oliver their daring in attempting such a project. If I may, I'd like to suggest that these gentlemen do a 4-CD set every year or so (how about an exerpt from Diamanda Galas' "Plague Mass" for the classical disc?), if only to demonstrate how un-Verboten gay music by gay musicians has become.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Musical Time Capsule
starting out with a scratchy ditty from the roaring twenties, this excellent historical collection manages to span a variety of musical genres, from rousing broadway musical to intimate diva-wrung blues toclassical orchestra. some may carp about choices, and some are obvious, there are rarities here among the cliches. this is an invaluable historicaldocument as well as an entertaining collection of tunes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One funny guy who's got my back!
I love Ant.There is something about him that just makes you smile. He's flamboyant and unapologetic about himself, without being crude and insulting like a lot of comics can be.He can take a tired topic like airlines (HOW MANY comedians have done that?!) and make it hilarious because he was the flight attendant.Guess what? The passengers are just as obnoxious as the airlines!I admit as a smoker I never thought about the signifigance of the Marlboro Miles catalogue before he pointed out that smokers don't do much jogging or extreme sports.Damn right, you'd never catch me in a canoe even if I didn't smoke! And those gay bashing jokes and stories!Great material for any day!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! These grrrls rock.
I was fortunate enough to see The Butchies for the first time last week at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival and later got them to autograph this CD for me. WOW! This is music I've been searching for a long time. These grrrls rock. They possess so much talent. It's difficult to pick a favorite track. The music is hard but raw, not overly produced and simplified. Kaia's voice is soft and beautiful. I frequently find myself turning the volume up so I can hear her better. I haven't been able to get this CD out of my stereo since I returned home. I've been a fan since the very first song they played on stage that evening.

5-0 out of 5 stars re: history rolling on
Emma Lou Harris is a figment of your imagination. Emmy Lou Harris is a wonderful blue grass musician.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Welcome Surprise
Ok, so I bought the cd because I think the chicks are WAY HOT, but it turns out that they rock too!I love tracks 1,4,6 and 10.This band turns up the heat and I'm hoping for more, more, more.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Butchies can sing to me anytime they want
I just purchased this CD, and was immediately impressed by the high energy of it.Every song is great, and it's the kind of album you can listen to constantly and not tire of.Plus it helps that The Butchies are gorgeous.
4-0 out of 5 stars super
If you're familiar with the kind of music the Butchies write already, you'll love this CD.Just good riot-inciting rock with great lyrics that fit right in.The first song "Send Me You" is the catchiest and rocks hard; I've listened to it at least once a day ever since I got it, which was about two weeks ago.But all the songs, the more you listen to it, the more you like it.Definately a good buy, and the music is still in the Butchies spirit. And check out their music video for "Send Me You," it rocks. As for it being a shame about how they aren't widely recognized and given attention...well personally, I hope their popularity doesn't grow TOO much more than it has already.... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific retrospective ...
I bought this one on the strength of Absurd Pop Song Romance (an amazing album - everyone needs to buy it), and while at times there's a certain randomness about the song selection on this CD, it's an excellent representative sample of Pansy Division musically and lyrically, from their early days to now. In the liner notes, Jon admits they had to skip some good songs (I'm surprised Sidewalk Sale, Wish I'd Taken Pictures, and *bleep* Buddy didn't make it), but at least they have a lot of good stuff to choose from.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pansy Luv
Get yourself into Pansy Division. You'll be glad you did. Others have. For starters, no less than Green Day took them out on the road as an early career opening act.

5-0 out of 5 stars This woman is funny as hell, check her out!!
I heard Suzanne once on HBO comedy hour recently and LOVED her!! I've never heard a les woman who just kept it real regardless of what topic. After seeing & hearing her I plan to purchase every cd/book she's ever done. She's quite talented and needs way more exposure.

5-0 out of 5 stars You won't stop laughing!!
I had the good fortune of meeting Suzanne this past Valentine's day in Houston,TX and bought this cd and had it autographed and such. She is such a down-to-earth, sweet person. I loved this cd and still laugh at it even though I've listened to it a 100 or more times. I highly recommend this cd as well as any of her others if you like to laugh.5-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous to listen to while driving a car

4-0 out of 5 stars sucks so good
my boyfriend just bought me this album for my birthday two days ago, and i've already listened to it ten times. the tunes are funny as hell, certainly, but also incredibly catchy. comparisons to peaches (and various other electroclash groups like tracy + the plastics) are definitely merited, although the addition of an obviously californian hip-hop sensibility in favour of (slightly pretentious) european-style techno beats sets gravy train!!!! apart. unselfconsciously dirty and silly. may inspire one to commit various unnatural acts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Raunchy, wicked, and fun
She got f***ed by a fry! Burger baby is probably one of the best songs on this album. It's so strange and hilarious. The girl gets pregnant by a french fry and almost has a burger baby abortion. She decides to keep her burger baby by the end of the song. Yeah, the whole album is like that. Strange lyrics that will keep you laughing for years to come. When I was trying to study for finals, this album kept me up even in the late hours of the night. Raunchy, wicked, and fun but may be too extreme for granny. Gravy Train!!!! sounds like the B-52s on an acid trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hunx is the Man!

1-0 out of 5 stars Dull
Please don't think I'm a grouch for giving a comedy CD a low mark. This album just isn't as good as the reviews here praised it as. I'm a big fan of George Carlin and Margaret Cho, so maybe I'm use to more "risky" comedy. Kurt rambles on about nothing real exciting and it gets boring. This also sounds like it was recorded in a small room of about 15 people. The mike was VERY close to the crowd, and you can clearly hear their own comments. If you are unfamiliar with this commedianne you may not want to spend a lot of money on this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious... until she outs herself
Elvira Kurt is one funny woman. The playground jokes are a riot, and her entire outlook on life is refreshing and hysterical. Her "adults regressing back to childhood" is one of the funniest moments on a comedy CD I've ever listened to.I had tears streaming down my face--at work!People kept asking me if I was okay. How embarrassing.5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, funny, funny!
Major perk - can listen to this CD repeatedly and I laugh everytime.

Editorial Review

The Hidden Cameras, like the Polyphonic Spree, specialize in swooning pop. The songs on HC's debut album revolve around communal living, gay love, and religious imagery.Singer/guitarist Joel Gibb's 15-member band (some of whom don little more than balaclavas when playing live) overcome possible charges that they're a novelty act thanks to Gibb’s knack of creating expansive, uplifting songs layered with flute, harp, trombone, and sleigh bells. "Day is Dawning" begins as a gently strummed paean to creation and slowly builds into a lilting, choral-tinged thing of loveliness. "Boys of Melody" is similarly beguiling, as Gibb gazes "far out at sea bathed in breeze" over the most simple, affecting melody this side of Mercury Rev. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so impressed . . .
I have to say, I bought this album after hearing about them somewhere (I can't even remember where or how). I read the reviews here on Amazon and thought I'd give The Hidden Cameras a shot. With reviewers claiming "The feel good album of the summer," and "infectious," and "album of the year," and, "the songs on this CD are so damn good. Every single one of them." I figured I couldn't go wrong.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Homosexual "Pet Sounds" (* * * * 1/4)
I am surprised that I am yet to see The Hidden Cameras compared to Guided By Voices. I understand that comparisons tonon-explicitly heterosexual artists like The Smiths and Belle & Sebastian more readily present themselves. However, the lyrics on TheSmell ofOurOwnare so unselfconsciously gay that they would make Morrissey blush. That, obviously, will put off some people, even the least homophobic among us. This is a real shame, as almost every song on this CD is as delicately and sincerely beautiful as the best moments by the latter two bands. So what about Guided By Voices? Well, if I amto think of The Hidden Cameras as just another band, not just another gay band,it is something about Joel Gibb's understated, singalong vocal style and the playful quality of the music that brings Cap'n Bob to mind. Then, of course, there are the more bombastic moments that suggest a tamer version of The Flaming Lips and The Polyphonic Spree. 4-0 out of 5 stars joyful, sad, and exciting
The Hidden Cameras could have come across as nothing more than a novelty act; but they are spared by the saving grace of having the gift to pen superbly beautiful songs! the stunning "Boys Of Melody" is my favorite song on here; it's delightful sound drifts and floats in a gentle way. it's one of those songs that makes you smile and gives you a little bit of a sad feeling at the same time. amazing how a well written melody has that affect on you sometimes. fans of The Flaming Lips should have something to rejoice about with this band, they both share the vision to write gorgeous and perfectly catchy pop songs with moments of errr...colourful lyrical imagery. ... i just got this cd about a week ago, and after hearing the first two tracks i was sold. i purchased the cd simply because of hearing so much about them, kaia and donna. I was very pleased to hear some great music to go along with the hype!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic
Both of Team Dresch's albums are amazing - this may be the most essential.Great mix of punk, rock & folk, with Kaia and Jodi lending their usually brilliant voices and lyrics to the mix. This is one of my all-time favorite records!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Personal Best Record
I bought this CD 6 years ago and it didn't get filed into my collection for about a year because it never left my CD player for more than a day or two.I've revisited "Personal Best" at least once a year sinceand it continues to amaze me.I believe Donna Dresch used to play bass inDinosaur Jr. for a brief period?J Mascis should kick himself for notletting Donna rock with him on guitar.Lesbian anthems abound on thisrecord but I never thought of it as lesbian in nature because the musiccuts straight and pure and speaks to anyone with any guts.Soaringguitars, beautiful melodies, and a punch I haven't felt this strong foryears!Stop reading and buy this now! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed Fresh Delivers
Her best work ever! This CD is the best! Suzanne is witty and has an interesting perspective on things. The Homo depot for instance. Definatley worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely and (all too) true-to-life
I love all of Suzanne Westenhoefer's albums, but this is my favorite just because of how 'in sync' it is with my life and the world I'm living it in."Waking Up Forty" and "Driving With My Girlfriend" just ring with truisms and I had to turn off "The Needy Cat" while driving because I was laughing too hard to pay attention to the road."'Friends' In Couples" is the weakest entry here, but everything else is wonderfully funny and entertaining. This is the one I play over and over because it just never gets old.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first 2!
I was pretty disappointed when I got this new comedy CD by Suzanne, since I have her first two and love them! I laughed pretty hard listening to "Nothing in my closet..", and "I'm not Cindy Brady", but her 3rd one, "Guaranteed Fresh", I hardly even cracked a smile at. She's just not as crude and funny with this one - why the change Suzanne? What a disappointment... ... Read more

So, after falling in love with "Are We Not Femme" and "Three" is was good to see the Butchies' roots.Liked the album a little less than the others, but it's still worth listening to...5-0 out of 5 stars best butchies album!
I never heard of the Butchies until I saw them perform as the opening act for SLeater Kinney. I was so amazed at how good their songs and performance was that I had to buy there album immediately and it lead to me buying all of their other albums and Kaia's solo albums. 5-0 out of 5 stars Hooper CD a must for comedy fans
Having been a comedy fan for over 20 years, it is hard to find a comedy CD that makes me laugh. Maryellen Hooper is one of those rare CD's. Maryellen has an incredible sense of humor and a great sense of timing. The only flawis that you aren't able to see her as she performs. I have seen Maryellenlive several times, and not only is her humor incredible, but her facialexpressions are a scream. I have listened to this CD over 20 times and Istill laugh every time. If you are only going to buy one comedy album thisyear, I would highly recommend Maryellen Hooper's Dignity Under Duress. Andif you get the opportunity to see Maryellen live, GO! After seeing herlive, it brings this CD to life. From her experiences as a hairstylist, toher car accident, to meeting her boyfriends parents, this comedy show hasit all. It is easy to see why Maryellen was the Female Comedian ot the Yearin 1998. ... Read more

At first it annoyed me because of the typical Ramones song structure (chorus, verse, repeat chorus ad nauseam) but as I gave it more listens I realizedthat the Queers were a tad more experimental in their own lowbrow-humor,volatile hardcore way in this early output by them. "We'd Have a RiotDoing Heroin," and "Love Me" are my two favorites...thoughthe cover of MacArthur's Park is kinda neat, though a bit of novelty. Ialso thought the live broadcast at the end was rather redundant. The livebroadcasts have roughly the same sound quality as the rest of the album andthe songs are the same so it seems rather useless. Aside from that, this isokay, though I'd recommend the Queers later work for a better idea of therest of the Queers' output.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this band
If you saw the Queers in 1998 and, based on their performance, want to buy one of their albums, I'd recommend getting their new one instead. This is their older (and better, in my opinion) sound when they were less pop-punk. These songs have the fast-and-simpleness of Ramones songs paired with theaggression typical of great bands like Black Flag.My fave song is"Too Many Twinkies". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SO GLAD it has been re-released!
This collection of songs (one of two Charlie Murphy cassettes I had in the early 80's) is top notch. Original songwriting. Political message of hope and dedication despite the devastating condition of our world. Excellent musicianship. Jamie Seiber is a world class cellist. Charlie Murphy's vocals are pleasant, in key, and energetic. There is a full band backing them and the excellent production quality shows. (Produced by a drummer from Santana).
5-0 out of 5 stars verey good
It is a verey good album all the music is well done

4-0 out of 5 stars Pop/Jazz sound with Environmental Message
This is an unusual CD but I really like it. The majority of the album conveys an environmental or clean living message with original songwriting and good music - kind of a mixture of pop/jazz. "Green World" is especially good - " We may be dancing on the only green world". It would be a five star album but there are two songs that keep me from putting the CD into a constant rotation.Read more
