Editorial Review

As a player (he is one of the masters of bandoneon, the button squeezebox that is the quintessential tango instrument), composer and bandleader Rodolfo Mederos has been a modernist with a traditionalist's heart. In his native Argentina he collaborated with rockers and jazz players well before it was acceptable to either rockers, jazz lovers, or tangueros. But he also knew his tango. For this, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars holy cats, the liner notes say "introduction"....
this is a taste, a fun get-to-know-you cd.the songs are varied, and god forbid some stray from the standard tango.i for one like the way some of the artists incorporate their own flavor into the music.if you're looking to do your dissertation on tango, then by all means, this is not for you.if you want a cd to eat dinner to, drive your car to, clean house to, and generally enjoy life to, well then give this one a go.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so bad...
I agree that the heavily stylised singing gets in the way of enjoying themusic.1-0 out of 5 stars Rough Guide: Tango.
There is a lot of good Tango music, but the people who made this sampler album weren't able to find any of it.It's like they were trying to put together the strangest, most marginal stuff they could find. The singing isdistractingly stylized, and most of the music is just plain odd. It's hardto dance to, and even harder to listen to. If you want a good sampleralbum, get "The Fabulous Tango Collection" or the moviesoundtrack to "The Tango Lesson". ... Read more

Composer and accordionist Richard Galliano owes a lot to Astor Piazzolla. Sure, he's tackled improv-jazzand French musette music, but--at the heart of performances--the tango is never that far away. On Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A title? You want a title? How about spellbinding?
I didn't know about Galliano before, yes I know it's a shame. Anyway I was looking for albums by Piazolla, and then I stumbled on this treasure. These pieces, in these arrangements, are filled with so much dramatic emotionalconflicts and resolutions, that, to me, they evoke layers and layers ofvisual stimulation. I went to the IMDB to look if Galliano has done anymusic for movies, and sadly his music is only featured in two films. I hopeit's he who refuses because if film makers can't see how big of differencethis kind of music genius will do to their films, then they have somethingloose in their heads. When I play this album, I hate to pause it at anymoment because it feels like breaking the flow of emotion, that's how goodit is. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC!!! TERRIBLE RECORDING and PERFORMANCES!!!
This recording has been one of the greatest disappointments in my cd collector memory. Dutoit has NO idea about the proper style with which to play this music (music I have conducted in performance with professional orchestras) and the recording is an acoustical disaster.
5-0 out of 5 stars My search for Oblivion has a happy ending.
Recently, I attended a concert by a chamber orchestra on tour. The printed program for the concert was largely "standard fare." There were then two encores, one of which I knew had to have been the work of Astor Piazzolla, but a Piazzolla work I hadn't recalled ever hearing. (I can't claim to have a particularly large library of Piazzolla works, but the library had already included the more popular successes by the Kronos Quartet, Gidon Kremer, Daniel Barenboim and Yo-Yo Ma.) Summoning up my courage after the concert, I went backstage to ask one of the musicians what the Piazzolla encore was. The answer was "Oblivion" (and I was, fortunately, not embarrassed by having to ask who the composer was; the absence of the near-obligatory bandoneon in this chamber orchestra did not "throw me off-track").

5-0 out of 5 stars She is fantastic
I have heard Ms. Beiser play some of these pieces before in her extraordinary concerts, often set in accesible atmospheric settings. Now to have them on a CD is too good to be true. The playing as always is amixture of the challenging, the sublime and the mystical.People shouldcheck out her other work and become a Beiser groupie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget what you think you know about the cello
This album is extraordinary. Listening is its own reward, but if you ever get a chance to see this performer, RUSH! She's unbelievable in live performance. This is what happens when a brilliantly talented virtuoso withthe requisite classical training expresses her interest in the wide worldand shrugs off the constraints of the classical canon. This is MUSIC. Whyyou have to search "classical" in order to get it to come up, Idon't know (are you listening, Amazonees?). This is as vital, contemporary, stimulating and far-reaching as any current CD - in any genre. If you likeclassical, you'll find this rewarding. if you like jazz, you'll find itinspired and highly individual. And if you like "world" (thatdubious genre; see what the liner notes say about that!) then you'll findall the exoticism and unique sounds/ethnic strains you want. This is musicthat moves you, fills your soul and makes you smarter too. The playing isbeautiful; her taste in composers (and their quality) is incomparable. Youwon't have anything else like it in your collection, and it will give youlistening pleasure for a long, long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Around the World in 60 Minutes
The pieces Miss Beiser has chosen for this disc are really wonderful!I understand that she has been performing these pieces around the world for years, and has finally recorded them.In Kebyar Maya, I wonder how she wasable to make all those different sounds with just the cello. It soundslike there are many different instruments playing, not just cello. I wishthey would put the cover picture up on the site - it's a photo of Maya in ayoga position (I think it's called the Ohm, legs crossed, hands palmstogether), with rays coming out from her hands. It's pretty cool. ... Editorial Review

For years the only available commercial CD of Astor Piazzolla's tango operetta, this live recording of Theatre Municipal de Tourcoing's 1987 staging suffers from its good intentions. The oversized production, meant as a tribute to the composer's legacy, doubles and triples the number of musicians in Piazzolla's original 11-part arrangement. When the bandoneon player, Nestor Marconi, is singled out as a soloist, you know that tight ensemble work is not the order of the day. The desire to pump up the "opera" quotient in Piazzolla's highly original "tango operetta" format results in a highly European-ized rendition of what is essentially a street opera. Read more
