5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guitar Duo
This is a fabulous, very high energy, instrumental album. Rodrigo and Gabriela combine their metal roots with latin melodies, and use the guitar as a percussion instrument in a way I've never seen before. See them live if you can. They grew up in Mexico city trying to make it playing in a metal band, and are now living in Ireland with this album that hit the top of the Irish music charts.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING.
This is an unbelievable album, and I definitely recommend it. Rodrigo y Gabriela are two amazingly talented musicians. The way they mix so many different genres is incredible and makes the music they create unique, fun, and exciting. A friend recommended them to me, and I was a bit skeptical at first as I've never even really thought about listening to a guitar album, but now I'm completely hooked. I've found it's great to have on in the background in my dorm, and everyone that's heard it in my room has loved it as well. To sum things up, BUY THIS ALBUM! It is well worth it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heat... by way of the cool.
I bought their first album, La Revancha del Tango, on a whim when my favorite D.C. haunt, Olssons Books & Records, was playing them over the store's speakers. The store's music buyer, Werner, was always good at recommending music from classic blues to "electronica" and Revancha was haunting. It is *still* growing on me.While I was excited to learn about the new album, I was also a bit wary as Revancha was so very, very good.I am glad to say that Lunatico actually bests the first album. I am fond of thinking of music as venues so consider "Amor Porteño" a quietly intense tango bar, "Differente" its wildly exhilarating opposite, "Notas" your private living room's dance floor (you're embarrassed by how it makes you want to move), and "Celos" that first date cafe with the man you've been dreaming of... And kudos to them for their powerfully poignant "Paris, Texas" with its pounding drums and wrenching piano and accordion sounds. HIGHLY recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars SF under a groove..new dance music and beyond
Gotan Project is a nice example of good instrumentation in dance music right now. I bought this album because I love a good mix of tango fusion, electronica, and dance. The production is rich and writing is quite good and with interesting melodies from South America with that French touch electronica sound.
5-0 out of 5 stars way cool

Fantastic and mindblowing guitarists. The entire album is beautful and masterfully done which is so different from anything done today. AMAZING!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW -- this is Fantastic!
My wife and I were driving to a friend's when the local rock station played the first cut "Tamacun" and we decided it was amazing and decided to pre-order it. I am thrilled ... listening to it for the first time, I'm over halfway through and there's not a bad piece in the bunch. Absolutely incredible work, and well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm gonna have to agree
This is a really great record. The cover caught my eye on iTunes and I sampled it and ended up buying the album. Fantastic production and lovely tones. Toe-tapping and dark in places. The Orion cover is a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Tango
Tango: Zero Hour was the very first tango recording/CD I had ever heard. A friend of mine loaned it to me, not ever telling me exactly what Tango was- all I knew to think of was the dancers with the roses between their teeth, where the dancing was more dramatic than the music... So, my first mistake: having never heard tango. My second? Listening to it late at night in the dark. Music had never rocked my world quite like this... It was the most intense experience I had ever had with music. I was shocked. Wide-eyed. Taken aback. The version I had in my hands was the original with the liner notes, not the new shiny one that I now own (and that you can now buy), and the prose written on the card inside was enough to rip me in half without having ever heard the music. Tango: Zero Hour is not for the faint at heart. It is not for the light enthusiast. As the liner notes so eloquently said: "And suffer, Motherf*****. This is the Tango."

5-0 out of 5 stars Tango evolved to its most abstract and profound expression
Im ashamed to say I began listening to Piazzola at my mid thirties... well, better late than never... Im not a music critic, but all I can say is that Tango has a higher dimmension where it becomes universal and mayble the category of jazz (higher jazz that is) is best to classify it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must
This is music to breathe and dream to. Piazolla at his best is probably the most enchanting and transcendental. It takes a Master Extraordinaire to make music like this, Piazolla's recordings only get better with age and never outdated because it is made up of the spirit and passions of a life lived richly. The Melancholy laments of the Bandoneon is truly one of the most haunting, nostalgic most beautiful musical Innovations ever made and noone interprets the manic poetry of it like Piazolla. I can't say much more then what the others have said here but this belongs in every serious music afficianado's collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Volume in Great Series
I love this CD (and the others in the series) because they instantly create the mood you are after. In this case, if you want Latin sounds and rhythms, you pop this CD into your stereo and you're instantly transported away. I often play this CD at work because it provides a nice backdrop of sound that's upbeat without being too distracting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Draws you in...
Yes,its true. From the first track onward, this album draws you in with its storytelling, spoken word and soothing melodies. At first glance, this wasn't something I would listen to but, alas after my first listen, it was hard for me to listen to anything else for a week!! Putumayo always does it right when they put together a project.Standout tracks are "Reflejo de Luna", "Caminhos de Cuba",and "Carmela".Any Putumayo fan will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for lounging

I gave it four stars to encourage those who like to sit and listen to fine orchestras. This CD may be great for dancing if you are in the clsss with those who danced with the stars. My partner and I are early 80s and dance almost everything else. Then we decided to learn Tango. This album doesn't work for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars He's got the soul
Piazzola must be the devil.... cause he certainly captured the soul (of tango, that is!)5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST for the Piazzolla neophyte!
I have more than ten Piazzolla CDs and this is my favorite. It's actually the first one of his that I ever bought, and I think that this is probably the best CD that a beginner to Piazzolla and Modern Argentine Tango could buy.It has a generous sampling of the several hundred songs that Astor Piazzolla wrote in his life, and it consists mainly of live recordings, which adds to the intensity of each piece.Interestingly enough, there are nearly 200 CDs of Piazzolla music (if not more), and even the songs in the ones recorded by Piazzolla himself vary significantly from album to album. This one, however, is a real joy and will get anyone's toes tapping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo Maestro!!
Oh dear God, how to describe the music that came out of this album?Maybe we should make an exception and allow a six star rating in this case. Astor Piazzolla is for me the best composer of the 20th century and one of the best of all time. The way he can make music dance in you head and trigger emotions from deep within you is stunning. It is impossible to describe the way he puts music together into some of the most powerful music ever heard and at the same time doing it in a way tango had never been done before. Maestro Piazzolla completely changed tango into something new, something some people don't even consider tango anymore. He'll shred your soul and make you lose all hope in your life and suddenly fill you with hope and a sense of awe.Every person who take music seriously and can appreciate art must own something by Astor Piazzolla; and feel the blessing of immersing in its brilliance. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Tango Great/ New Age Music No/ Strange Mix
If you love tango music, you will love the classic pieces here, but be prepared to have the interspersed New Age musical tracks jar you out of your tango mood.About every other track is insipid modern background music of no distinctive interest.Keep your finger on the skip button.Enjoy the tango numbers of Hugo Diaz, Anibal Troilo, Juan D'Arienzo, Osvaldo Pugliese, and the nuevo tango composer and performer, the famous Astor Piazzolla....The liner notes are excellent....I have not seen the movie so I am judging the soundtrack on its own merits as I see them, independent of the film itself.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Tango Lesson
My wife loved the movie hence the purchase of the soundtrack. Every other cut is an actual tango but the other stuff is some kind of new wave John Tesh-like dreck.

The popularity of tango comes and goes, but the "verticalexpression of horizontal desire" has remained synonymous with passion, unrequited love, and nostalgia for more than a century. This compact disk is an invitation to dancers. It says "Let's Dance Tango! " In actuality, it is an anthology of danceable tango music with representation various periods of the 20th Century. It is compelling music. My wife wanted to dance in with me in the kitchen when she first heard Luz Verde, a milonga by Luis Villasboas y su Orquesta Tpica. The names of the performers are known to all tangeros, and include the great musicians in a range that includes Carlos Gardel, Anibal Troilo, Astor Piazzola, Osvaldo Pugliese, and the contemporary group Trio Pantango.A variety of styles of tango is presented, from the traditional Argentine tangos well suitable for dancing in close embrace to peppy milongas, a candomb, and an tango vals (tango waltz).Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for the money.
I suppose I expected something a little more uplifting than the music on this cd, so if you are looking for tangos that are not only good for dancing but good for listening, you may want to keep looking.I am a dance instructor, so I find it does come in handy when I need to practice or warm-up on my own, but trying to have a student practice a new or complicated move to the mid-tempo is a bit challenging. They do not provide for much variety, the songs, and all kind of run together, which does lend a hand in not being distracted when concentrating on dance. All in all, not spectacular, but does the job.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT Tango CD, but CD cover track listings are wrong
"20 Beautiful Tangos" is an EXCELLENT American Tango CD with 20 great music tracks, and is highly recommended, and the price is inexpensive and right. However I could not give this CD the highest Amazon "5 stars" because the CD printed cover track number and name list does not match the actual CD music.I have emailed Madacy Music about this ( at @madacy.com) and received an email reply thanking me for making them aware of this CD error problem. This error probably affects the many thousands of this CD already distributed and sold.

Borges its a great writer, and so when it comes to mix the emotion of literature in the field of music, piazzolla its a virtuoso, the complete record its great, perfectly balance, emotional, intense, amust for the nu tango lovers

5-0 out of 5 stars The Name Says It All
Tango Apasionado - never has there been a better description of the form in generalic. And the "Cyclical Night" describes the form on this CD in specific. The tango has evolving from a barrio song of bordellos to a sultry dance to, in Piazzolla's hands, an entirely new creature. One only has to see "The Twelve Monkeys" and hear the edgy, nervous sound track to realize how far the Tango has progressed.

Editorial Review

The dates and facts surrounding the birth of Carlos Gardel, even his real name and nationality, are still argued about--more than60 years after his death in a plane crash. But his place as thegreatest singer in the history of tango is indisputable. Gardel notonly nearly singlehandedly defined the tango-cancion (sung tango) andset the standards of interpretation. For many, he embodied the veryspirit of tango--urbane yet streetwise, romantic but also tough, sensual but oh-so-cool. This collection, smartly selected andreasonably improved aurally, offers ample proof. North Americanaudiences may recognize songs such as El Dia Que Me Quieras (sung byLuis Miguel, Julio Iglesias), Mi Buenos Aires Querido (Iglesias) andPor Una Cabeza (soundtrack Read more

Yes, the recordings here are core treasures of Tango. But the audio processing causes there to be resonances at certain midrange frequencies that are harsh and irritating.Better sound, and twice the tracks for 1/3 more, can be found in "Lo Mejor de lo Mejor" (as it is listed on Amazon --- the CD actually is called "Carlos Gardel 40 Temas Originales").

4-0 out of 5 stars dreamy but refreshing
I bought this because I loved the movie, both visually and philosophically. The soundtrack goes very well with the movie and is responsible for much of the surreal feel of it. But even listened to independently it's great.
4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky, Fun, Fantastic
I know nothing about tango; I got this soundtrack because I like the movie so much, and the music is such an important part of the movie's wandering, convoluted and dreamy feeling. I don't think I'll probably buy other Glover Gill albums, but this one is wonderful -- I often put it on while I'm working; it's great background music but it somehow manages to stay in the front of your mind.5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!!!

Editorial Review

Gidon Kremer, who plays the standard violin repertoire so well, has remained a restless explorer of music. Here is his first album of Piazzolla arrangements, introduced by a moving and perceptive assessment of Piazzolla by composer John Adams. Kremer has completely steeped himself in the spirit of the tango, and of Piazzolla's transformation of this music into concert works. The selection (mostly larger-scale Piazzolla works), the varied arrangements, and the compelling quality of the playing make this one of the best albums of this music not involving the composer's own performances. And if you love it, you'll be glad to know that Kremer's second Piazzolla album is also available. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully captivating music by the tango master
I was introduced to the music of Astor Piazzolla by the more than great violinist Gidon Kremer when he played a virtuosic tango as an encore.Whenever a rich new vein of wonderful music is opened to me, well, it makes for a bright and happy day.Not long after I picked up this CD and I can recommend it to you highly. This is more than just tango dance music, these are serious and contemplative compositions that use the Tango as the vehicle just as the classical and especially Baroque composers used their dance music for instrumental compositions. The music is full of mood, sensuality, rhythm, lush harmonies, dissonance, love, and pain.It is a music of contrasts and never gets too fussy or complicated. It wears its heart on its sleeve and draws us in because it is so charming.
4-0 out of 5 stars When styles mix
I bought this record following a live performance by Gidon Kremer et al. at the Verbier Festival. The mixture of classical music with a dose of jazz on a Latin base produces an interesting result that is quite surprising at first. However, the more one hears, the more the result grows on the listener, just as at the live show where the audience, somewhat stunned at the outset, gave a standing ovation at the end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but an accordion is not a bandoneón.
As an argentine tango lover I was amazed at the "authentic", old time, popular feeling of these tango recordings, made in U.S.A., not in Argentina. The players are outstanding, specially those of piano and violin. The accordion sound is truly remarkable but lacking the - for an argentine listener - indispensable sound of a bandoneón, the classic tango instrument introduced a century ago in the port city of Buenos Aires by german sailors.
5-0 out of 5 stars good album
this is a good cd to listen to for any tango enthusiast.

3-0 out of 5 stars Classic tangos, nice arrangments, but...
Classic tangos, arranged and played by excellent, classically trained musicians, but the end result tends to sound like classically trained musician playing from charts. The accordion lacks the pressing edginess of the bandoneon.Still, avery pleasant listen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars La Camorra, Piazolla
This Piazolla CD is pure Argentinian magic! The first piece on the CD is divinely beautiful. I could listen to it over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
I'm stunned by two things: First, that I am the first person to review this great album and it is nearly 5 years old.
5-0 out of 5 stars Paradise Now
What I like about Astor Piazzolla 's compositions are that they shift dynamically, rhythmically, mood-wise in a fairly illogical way that mimics the texture of everyday life (mine at least). Not rampant atonality .Like life, the compositions retain consistent voices, threads of melodies. But bet's are off about what's comin' around the corner. Read more

Editorial Review

Violinist Gidon Kremer and his ensemble, Kremerata Baltica, have tackled repertoire that ranges from Baroque to contemporary, but they seem to shine on the newer stuff. The group has an obvious ear for the music of the Baltic region, and Kremer's icy precision and passionate playing are tailor-made for the modern masters. On Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Come In" -- Must Listening
I'm a fan of Glass and Part, but I have to confess that their music on this CD more or less went in one ear and out the other. That's not a bad thing, because I like their work and listen to plenty of it.I just, wasn't bowled over, is all.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy & not-easy, but all profound, moving & rewarding
A fascinating combination of "modern" works to appreciate on this disc. All quite different, powerful juxtaposition of styles and moods.Tabula Rasa, the "lead-off" composition by Arvo Part, packs stunning intensity of a dark, melancholy sort in Part's minimalist, yet melodic vein. Next is Glass's "Company" for string orchestra. Pardon my simple mind, but I really do enjoy the regular/irregular pulsing, throbbing undercurrent of his works. The style is highly characteristic, yet, within that signature framework, he pulls in just enough complexity and variation in my opinion to make this highly worthwhile fare. Then, "Come In" by Martynov. What can I say, this is easy listening, but a real deep "easy" at that. Positively brought a lump to my throat and then some! Tell you the truth, I was so drained after these first three pieces, that I had to take a break before the final item, Darf Ich by Part. Listen again & again when you're in a bit of a heavy mood that deserves musical concordance. The performance/performers work these treasures to the hilt. I'd pare my CD collection from 1200 down to 12, and "Silencio" would remain.

5-0 out of 5 stars A minimalist delight.
