Editorial Review

There’s no doubt that singer Lila Downs' profile is on the rise after her appearance in the film Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Endless talent, humor(!), peerless voice
It does not happen very often that one can hear a forty year old classic in a new cover version, and it is as if you hear that song all new and all over again. Especially, I had always thought that Chavela Vargas' version of Paloma Negra would remain the "gold standard", but when I listened to Lila Down's version here, ohh boy was I wrong, and ohh boy was I blown away! She plays with her talent, she jiggles with her incredible musical possibilities. Where other artists put a lot of effort into a single interpretation, where you see they work hard, Lila Downs seems just like a child that opens a big box of candies and asks: "What type of magic do I feel like doing next?"
5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Sound, Filled With Passion And Soul!
I first heard Lila Downs' sultry, smokey voice in the film "Frida." The movie's entire soundtrack is extraordinary, and I still listen to the CD frequently. Fortunately Ms. Downs has come out with four albums since then, because I love the passion and soul she puts into her music. "Una Sangre" is her latest offering. And it is an eclectic, outstanding mix, based on her multicultural artistic vision!
5-0 out of 5 stars Another great offering
On this Lila Downs fourth or fifth CD if you count the rerelease (with additional tracks)of "Sandunga" finds her even deeperand more comfortable in her binational soul. Revealing her bicultural identity by the light of the moon ,muchlike a leopard in a starless night jungle, her vocals pounce on your soul, invadingand capturing your innermost feelings. There isa certain maturity to her latest work that reveals an accomplished artist, one who has travelled the globe and still comes back to her roots. There are no less than five traditional songs that have been given the Lila Downs treatment to retain their folkloric roots but with an edge, the Lila Downs edge. Even the songs that are originals have that feeling of traditional folkloric music because offine productionand musicianship. Although Lila is the star, credit must be given to the tight band that hails from different lands and whose flags make themlike a U.N. delegation. Of course, it goes without mentioning that Lila's "amorcito" Paul Cohen does a wonderful job arranging and producing the various melodies for a tight cohesive sound. If you are new to Lila you may feel the disc lacks continuity but this is who Lila is. She is a multitalented artist whose voice is like a contortionist, bending ,dippingand weaving between genres in her unimitable style. To say she is unique is an understatement. Whether she sings in husky tones, soft whispers, lingering, escalating ,suddenly diving operatic high notes or any style Lila chooses , she is fantastic. Listening to her gives me chills today just like the first time I heard her back in 1999 . The haunting melodies stay with you long after the disc stops playing. I've been listening to this disc for about a year now and never seem to get tired of it. I only put it away , offmy multi-disc rotation to give others a chance but I always come back to her. She can sing avariety of styles, many are featured hereand they are allreally good. Obviously she could do just a jazz album, as is evidenton her English version of "One Blood" where she sounds like like a sultry, throaty , Latina, Sade. Her talent is boundless. She has been compared to Chavela Vargas but really there is no comparison, there is Lila and then there is Lila. It is her style, her persona, her music that creates the magic. Some of the more traditional songs that have received the Lila treatment are the mystical "Cielo Rojo,""La Cucaracha," La Bamba," and"Paloma Negra" come to new life like antiques recently brought out of the cabinet to be proudly displayed at the table. Although I like very much the traditonal songs featured on this disc I am also drawn to "Dignificada" which has a slight reggae back beat, "Malinche" which explores the Mexican godmother cursed by some but that belongs to all of us who have Mexican heritage, the bluesy , rootsysung in English "Mother Jones," the call tomusical arms Paul Cohen sax introduction onthe Arabic sounding "Brown Paper People" with it's hip-hop inflected vocals adding further worldly textures and both Spanish and English versions of "One Blood/ Una Sangre" solidify the bilingual/binational nature of this disc. Lila is like a fine glass of wine or aged anejo Tequila that resonates with the various nuances and influences of the earth and climate, creating an experience to be savored and to reflect upon. She is not a person who fits into the flavor of the day pop- variety-disposible-icons that flood the music market today. This is a true artist who reflects what many people only feel and cannot express. This is another ina succesive line of great Lila Downs albums to be experienced. As others have stated, check her out live too. I've seen her three times and her shows are incredible. You need this CD in your collection, your soul will never be the same. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars La Voz Romantica de Mexico ... Powerful
Outstanding music from the past to present.Awesome memorabilia set. There are songs on this CD that goes down in history forever.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one
This is the one Chente Cd you would want to have left in your car if your house burned down. This is the one you'll always come back to after staying out all night with those other 'viejas'.By the way I really wish they would put more info in the sleeves like lyrics or some nice sombrero poses. Please Don Chente, have someone 'fix' your website too, please?

5-0 out of 5 stars Incomparable !
A wonderful compilation of the most popular songs sung by the the legendary Vicente Fernandez. This album and Historia de un Idolo 2 is a must have for anyone that loves Vicente, musica ranchera or love Mexican music. His voice is incredibly beautiful, and powerful. I went to see him live in Madison Sq. Garden and he sounds exactly the same. His voice as beautiful as ever. He sang for 2 and a haft hours without intermission. Chente is in a class by himself. 5-0 out of 5 stars one of five recordings i would take to a desert isle
The first time i heard los lobos was "will the wolf survive" and i thought it was ok, but later i heard "la pistola y el corazon" and thought, "my damn, that is a fine album!"Los Lobos is the tightest band (like they've been together since birth) i've ever heard and this album exhibits their superb musicianship. There is absolutely no filler on this album, every song is beautiful and complements the other songs very well.It is a wonderful blend of up and slow tempo tunes and, personally, the best comes last. The track "la pistola y el corazon," tugs at my emotions everytime i hear it, and even though i don't have command of spanish, the vocals and instrumentation are so expressive that i can easily feel the despair of the singer. The band also did a great job of getting the listener involved in the music by creating an impromptu party experience in some of the songs like when one of the band members shouts "hoi!" in "el canaler" to keep the pace hot. One of the best albums you will ever hear!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
In all honesty (and with much regret), it seems that traditional Mexican music is dying out--it is with this in mind that I speak on behalf of this wonderful collection of traditional Mexican music.Los Lobos have certainly outdone themselves with La Pistola y El Corazon, which is an excellent introduction to the traditional sounds of Mexico.Quite a variety of styles are represented on this album, such as the lively "son jarocho" as well as the melancholic "huapango" and the beautifully melodic "vals," all of which are native to Mexico. The Spanish guitar seems to be the main instrument present in the majority of the songs, which is a lovely departure from the popular accordion-dominated "nortena" and "ranchera por accordeon" (little more than nortena with a slight folk influence), both of which are strongly associated with Mexico; interestingly enough, these are relatively new additions to the vast variety of music native to Mexico. The band's version of "Si Yo Quisiera" fits this fold quite nicely and will sound very familiar to perhaps the majority of listeners; I, on the other hand, am not a fan of polka, particularly Mexican polka, marking this song as my least favorite.Even then, there is still much beauty to be found on this release, particularly with the huapango "Amarillas," a very haunting number. The lively and joyful-sounding "Guacamaya" makes the perfect intro, as it invites the listener in to a world of beautiful music."(Sonajas) Mananitas Michoacanas" bears a striking resembling to Cajun fiddling, and it is genuinely pleasing to listen to.Other than the songs "Si Yo Quisiera" and "Estoy Sentado Aqui" (not a particularly great track, really), every one of these compositions is a masterpiece. The Spanish-influenced guitar solos are also an asset to the album, proving that the members of Los Lobos are extremely talented musicians. To all who read this: this is true Mexican music. Please add this to your collection; you will not regret it.

Great authentic Mariachi music by the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent !
This is one of the best albums of mariachi music I ever owned, I carry it with me to play it on the subway, and in my car. Most of the songs are popular, but it's still wonderful to listen. thier intereptation of Besame Mucho is still the best, and this song has been sang by almost everybody who can sing. I especially love La Malaguena, Las Mananitas and Cucurrucu Paloma. This CD is a delight, a must have for evert music fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars This album is a sampler of Linda's Spanish language songs
The sources for the 20 songs of this album are:
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation!
As a kid, growing up in LA, I was unconscioulsy registering several cultural influences, chief amongst them surf music, then rock, then perhaps Mexican music, via a UHF channel I used to watch, primarily for the bull fighting, but secondarily because I liked Mariachi music, and some class trips to Alvarado Street.
5-0 out of 5 stars que bonito!
Ay que lindas son estas canciones. How wonderful to hear Linda Ronstadt tapping into the roots of her Mexican father. How joyful to hear the melodious notes of "Charreada" from this soulful diva. You feel transported to another time and place with these wonderful boleros, mariachi and ballads."Cuando Me Querias Tu" is filled with haunting restraint and expression, and the devestating, achingly beautiful "Siempre Hace Frio" which has been covered by many different artists, is especially stirring here.Another tune worth noting is "Piel Canala." I found myself doing a modified rumba at the Borders listening station. This really makes you think of classic 1950s romantic music from Mexico.Enjoy this.Ay, it will truly break your heart. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good surprise
The band was unknown to me, unlike Mariachi Cobre and Los Camperos. All songs are very well played and the takes are excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great collection of traditional Mariachi music
I have this CD as part of a collection of Mariachi music, and I probably like it the best. The music is a selection of traditional Mariachi music and is well performed. It will lift your spirits. What an affordable example of really good Mariachi music. I recommend it to anyone who loves Mexico, and already loves or wants to get to know Mariachi music.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Share some love with the unknown one"
In his 1987 historical drama Walker, director Alex Cox (Repo Man) told the story of William Walker (Ed Harris), an American renegade who, in the 1850s, took over as president of Nicaragua. The film caught a lot of flak from critics because of its use of deliberate anachronisms (TVs, helicopters, etc.) to draw satirical parallels between Walker's corrupt behavior and the US government's involvement in Nicaragua in the 1980s; it quickly sank into obscurity -- and sadly, so did its soundtrack...
5-0 out of 5 stars I waited 15 years for this CD...
Finally, a CD release of this wonderful soundtrack. Strummer immersed himelf in 19th century Central American music and came out with a soundtrack that was perfect for the movie and instantly put him in league with Morricone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mariachi Music
Mariachi Cobre provides a great cross section of mariachi songs which will enhance your listening pleasure. It is a great addition to any collection of Mexican music. One of my favorites is "El Pastor" because of its range in vocal and instrumental presentations. Anyone who likes mariachi music will not be disappointed with this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete with book and translations!
A great enhancement to this vivid mariachi CD is that an attractive booklet comes with it.Included is a short history on the mariachi, the evolution of the instruments and info on Mariachi Cobre.According to the booklet, this world class group has performed for former President Ronald Regan's inauguration in 1984.This material is in Spanish and English.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mariachi Perfection
Mariachi Cobre are a talented assembly of musicians - Other than Mariachi Vargas I can't think of any Mariachi band more accomplished.Their performances are full of fire and passion and virtuosity. All of their recordings are national treasures (They are essentially THE American Mariachi), and this is their masterpiece.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Romantic songs of Pedro Infante
It is a great CD with classic of Mexican history. Unfortunately, the recoding quality could be a little better. While you hear very little scratching in the background, the volume quality is not stable through the whole CD. It needs to be remastered a little better. Nevertheless, we should remember that these songs were recorded on the 40-50s and you cannot expect the same crispy quality as today studio recordings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful songs, Wonderful Voice... Pedro, donde estas?
This is a great album and a good one to start a Pedro Infante collection. His warm, romantic voice combined with the great mariachi accompaniment--superb!! El jazmin deshojado is a beautiful song; the lyrics are pure poetry, the melody is gorgeous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
As the son of a professional musician, I have acquired a reasonable taste and appreciation for all kinds of music. When I recently saw Mariachi Cobre on TV I was astounded by the excellence of this group. They combine the very best of instrumentalists, vocalists, and arrangements to produce a sound that is the best of the best in the world of Mariachi Music today. Steve Carillo's classical training and voice quality make him a lead mariachi without peer...I am truly astounded by him and the Cobre's many gifted members. If you haven't heard Mariachi Cobre before, Este Es Mi Mariachi presents them at their finest. And when you listen to Steve sing "Estrellita"...well, just remember, I told he was superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars They Are The Best In The US!!!
I remmember hearing my first mariachi album about five years ago. It was Cobres self entitled Cd. Sinced then, I have began playing mariachi, and hope to be as good as they are some day. Their musicianship is amazing and their voices pure gold. This Cd is just one example of their amazing talents. Thanks guys and, QUE SIGE LA TRADICION!!!!!!!!!!!!

Editorial Review

From the accordion polkas of the Texas border to the dazzling harp of the Veracruz region, there's a huge range of folk music styles in Mexico. But this double-CD box is primarily aimed at lovers of mariachi who just can't get enough of the precision horn parts, swaying unison violins, and wildly joyful marimba. The unnamed ensemble on disc 1 brings impressive chops and unbridled enthusiasm that sweeps freshness even into standards like "La Cucaracha," "The Mexican Hat Dance" (disguised here as "El Jarabe Tapatio"), and the ditty that's become the American ballpark warhorse, "Las Chiapanecas" (you won't fail to recognize the middle section). Disc 2 adds a romantic bent with yearning Latin vocals and, of all things, an electronic keyboard that does little to detract from the nostalgic atmosphere. For a rootsy, rough-and-tumble version of mariachi, treat yourself to the CD Read more

This CD is most of the music you'd hear from any decent mariachi band or a soundtrack for a Mexican restaurant. Not terribly inventive or daring and on some tracks the production values are subpar.Overall, however, it's a fine introduction to traditional Mexican music and like any compilation, may very well lead the listener down the road to experiencing new artists. ...
