Editorial Review

"I hate world music," wrote David Byrne, who went on to explain that he disliked a vague marketing label that ghettoized the majority of the world's music. The Rough Guiders who compiled this insanely far-flung anthology, conversely, apparently adore the term's catchall nature. Which is why you'll find everything from Colombian salsa fireball Joe Arroyo to the Gaelic "mouth music" of Scot singer Talitha MacKenzie here and a whole lot more. World music usually signifies roots less than fusion, which is why Mali singer Oumou Sangare's electrified traditionalism sounds just fine beside the avant-psychedelic guitar of Henry Kaiser and Malagasy singer Roger Georges. A certain disproportion is probably inevitable. Africa, with its incomparable dance rhythms, weighs in heavy with contributions by Youssou N'Dour (Senegal), Zaiko Langa Langa (Zaire), and Cecile Kayirebwa (Rwanda), while Asia is represented only by Guo Yue and Joji Hirota's flute duo. Irish folk, Louisiana zydeco, and Nubian blues are also represented here. But anyone interested in learning more about these artists will have to refer back to Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Music by The King Of The Mambo
This was the first and only Box Set that I have of "El Rey" and I must say that thisboxed setis the greatestcollection of music ever recorded it has some great songs including Que Te Pedi, Celia & Tito, Donde Estabas Tu, and Nina Y Senora to name a few. The reason I like this boxed set is because it gave you 50 of the greatest tracks ever made plus it is a great starter for people just getting into latin music or Tito Puente in general. So if you are in the mood to dance then this 3 cd set is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than I expected
I bought this box set with apprehension, not sure what to expect, but equally aware that this is essential listening for Jazz lovers and Latin music enthusiasts alike.I can honestly say that I got much more than Iexpected. The diversity and complexity of the tracks included isimpressive, especially because I'm a member of a musical generation broughtup on one sound, one hit wonders.I definitely would recommend this set toanyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dig that funky Wurlitzer!
Depending on your perspective this is great campy fun or just great fun; Either way it's a good document of Hollywood's high spirited yet stereotyped interpretation of South American cultures. What makes this music (somewhat) enduring is its irrepressible energy and great performances: the swingin' Xavier Cugat, the transcendently loopy Carmen Miranda and Ethel Smith on the mighty Wurlitzer organ - dig those crazy runs on "Boneca De Pixe" and "Tico Tico"! So rather than slogging through the movies themselves - mostly tedious and very dated - you can get to their meat with this anthology. Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars NON-STOP FUN FROM START TO FINISH. YOU'LL LOVE IT!
With a host of tremendously talented Latin performers, most notably XAVIER CUGAT and CARMEN MIRANDA, this dazzingly fun CD is dynamite entertainment. Derived from recordings made for the soundtracks of classic MGM movies from the '40s, there are ample delights here, with amazing sound quality. Some tracks are even in stereo! My favorite oddity: No less than Esther Williams, Van Johnson, & organist Ethel Smith in a Portugese ditty called "Boneca de Pixe". It's astounding!

5-0 out of 5 stars ALOT OF SMILES
For a fan of Bach and Ravel, Mahler and Brahms, it doesn't make too much sense to let you know that this CD is one of my favorites. If you are now, or if you have ever been, a fan of the M.G.M. musical movies, this one is for you. Here collected on one CD are 18 Latin numbers in movies from the 1940's.Most of them starred Esther Williams or Jane Powell and featured the musical talents of Xavier Cugat or Carmen Miranda.16 of the 18 tracks are previously unissued; the sound is terrific, esp. when you consider that the movies were made 60 years ago; and I promise you alot of smiles. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The best starting place for mambo
Perez Prado pretty much invented mambo, plain and simple. Sure, you can point to earlier artists as having laid some of the groundwork for it, but it was Prado who brought it all together as one genre. If you are interested in getting into Prado's works or the mambo genre as a whole, this is a good sampler to pick up. Sure it doesn't have all his best works (the "Voodoo Suite" probably couldn't be included here due to its length) and it does have some of his more tame works (the first two tracks where big hits so they pretty much had to be included here), but it has a lot of his best songs. His best songs are the best things the mambo genre ever produced - full of loud squeling horns and shouted vocals. In other words, great stuff to dance to. Try to track down a used copy of this, as it probably is the best Prado compilation. While you're at it, also pick up Rhino's Tito Puente compilation (also out of print), Rhino's "Mambo Mania" sampler, and Prado's "Voodoo Suite" album (the title track is probably his best work).

4-0 out of 5 stars A little bit of Perez...
This CD collects 20 of the best recordings by "The King of the Mambo", including the #1 hits "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" and "Patricia".If you like the mambo, you will definitely enjoy this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cheeseball classic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Rene Touzet you and your music are missed
With all the music Mr. Touzet recorded, why is their only one CD?5-0 out of 5 stars East LA Rocks on the Westside
For those of us who came of age in the early 1960s in or near East Los Angeles will remember the posters announcing recent and upcoming appearances of Rene Touzet on telephone poles throughout the barrio.I never made it to one of his appearances, but when I saw his CD at Sounds of Music on Whittier Blvd. a few years ago I picked it up and have enjoyed it ever since. If you're in the mood for the Latin sounds that inspired the introductory chords to "Louie, Louie", remember "La Pachanga", and appreciate sweet combinations of piano, voices and a full Latin orchestra, this CD of the best from the Cuban-born Touzet are for you.It will bring back his appearances on the Westside of LA, whether your ever made it there or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Viva Rene ! Your music is as great as ever !
This magnificent cd brought back memories of the times I was able to sneak in at the Hollywood Palladium and listen to not only Rene Touzet, but such great stars as Tito Puente and La Lupe. These great artists were always introduced by that great m.c., Chico Sesma, who gave to us Chicanos and other Latinos the great sounds of Rene Touzet. To those of you lucky enough to have seen his band play at the old Crescendo on Sunset Blvd., this cd will make you recall the nights when you listened to good Cuban music, with rich, romantic arrangements. ... Editorial Review

Cuban bandleader Damaso Perez "Prez" Prado was still riding high on the massive success of "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White"--the top pop hit of 1955--when he entered a Hollywood studio to cut this swingin' tribute to the capital of Cuba. While the album didn't produce any hits, it may well be the finest full-length recording of his career. Prado leads his orchestra (which includes such renowned players as trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, saxophonist Rene Bloch, and drummer Leo Acosta) on a cavalry charge through a number of Cuban and Latin American classics, including "Besame Mucho," "Baia," "Peanut Vendor," and "La Comparsa," finishing up with eight impressionistic minutes of "Mosaico Cubano." Listen once, and you'll fully understand why they called him King of the Mambo. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Also Love This CD
This CD, I believe, is every bit as creative as, say,5-0 out of 5 stars I love this CD
this music is truly infectuous, the more you hear it, the more you like it.This is without a doubt Perez Prado's best album, and Maynard Ferguson's trumpet literally screams out of the speakers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, a great album, but not "guilt-free"
I agree with the above reviewer that this album is wonderful, but what was so "guilt-free" about pre-Castro Cuba? Please remember, Cuba was run by a vicious dictator propped up by our government, and by theMafia. Some guilt-free.Granted, Castro is no enlightened leader, buthe's a cut above Battista.Fortunately, Perez Prado had no stake in hiscountry's politics. He was a great artist, plain and simple, and it isactually unfortunate that Cuba's politics hurt his career in the U.S. after1960. ...
