5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect combination
Growing up in the early 70s with older siblings, the Beatles defined the music of my childhood. In recent years I have found myself intoxicated by Latin rhythms such as mambo and salsa. So needlless to say, this CD brought a huge smile to my face from start to finish.I absolutely love it!But even beyond my own tastes, this is superb music.Somehow, the Latin arrangements of these Beatle tunes bring out the beauty and the passion of the original compositions in an invigorating way that is both compelling and fun. It's as if the songs were written to be played in this style. Each track features a different artist, and for the most part, they all deliver.A couple of the vocal performances fell a little short, but, overall this is a solid project. The arrangements are stunningly good and the heart and enthusiasm that went into this recording comes through vividly. And if all this isn't enough, Tito Puente is featured on a couple cuts.If you are a fan of both the Beatles and Latin music, this CD is a slam dunk.If you are familiar with one more than the other, I highly recommend expanding your musical horizons and giving this a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bueno
My husband and I heard this at a local restaurant, and had to buy it immediately! It's a new twist on old favorites!

5-0 out of 5 stars an energetic tropical tribute
I simply love this CD...it is a brigde with a two way crossing. Beatlefans may find themselves exploring Latino rythms, whilst Latino music lovers may find themselves exploring the Fabs...the album carries all the flare of aBeatles fiesta...the first track "Hey Jude" pulls you in, laterCelia Cruz( another leg end in her own right) does a very amusing renditionof "Obladi Oblada"...I was almost in tears of laughter when Ilistened to the Spanish translation..."I Wantto hold Your Hand"sung in Spanish is done as it has never been done...although almost all ofthe tracks are well done here...it is these 3 tracks that I never tire oflistening to, time and time again...the songs are done in both Spanish& English...alot of love was poured into this excellent tribute...whichwould have been timelier if released now with all the Latin beats hittingthe radio...the Beatles were right when they said that Latino music wouldbe the next big thing as they rendered their own verison of "BesameMucho"...they predicted it almost 40 years ago...as their own musicbecame ever so eclectic embracing a wide range of styles...from India toMotown...perhaps that is why out of all the musical acts in history, it wasthe Beatles (los Escarabajos) that have most appealed to countlesscultures...and the rich musical influence continues as Paul McCartneyhimself traveled recently to Cuba to further enrich himself...and I daresay he and his fellow bandmates have all enriched thwe world...que viva losBeatles para siempre...un grupo musical excelente que influenciado lamusica sin discriminacion! ... Editorial Review

As jazz, this disc is a bit of an anomaly, as Xavier Cugat wasn't considered a jazz musician in the strict sense. His lively rumba- and xylophone-led ensembles do not, however, lack for pep or exoticism. They enhance the martini-tipping vibe of the Cocktail Hour series of budget-priced two-CD sets. When the band gets the full string and chorale thing going, underpinned by lively exotica rhythms on "Misirlou," "Night Must Fall," and particularly "Temptation," one can't help but imagine the movie Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars horrible production value and sound quality
This DVD has terrible sound. The musicians, songs, and arrangements are great but the stage is cheesy and the sound quality is awful.I have the Africando All Stars CD and the sound is pristine. The DVD, in my opinion, ruins the music with the terrible audio production. At times the vocals are distorted and the horns are all shrieking treble with no warmth in the mix.If you care at all about audio quality stay away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Africando Live at the Zenith in Style!!
At over two hours, this live performance from the summer of 2002 is probably one of the best live concert videos bar none. It features a host of top-shelf vocalists: the great Gnonnas Pedro from Benin, Eugene Shoubou from Haiti's Tabou Combo, heart-throb Koffi Olomide from Congo, Ronnie Barro's extremely strong voice on "Trovador" and "Colombia Mi Corazon", Sekouba Bambino et al. The trumpet and trombone section scream underpinned by a relentless tidal wave of percussion.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Latin Jazz CD.Hits the spot!
I must concur with the other reviewers in saying that this is a latin jazz gem. It's smooth, like a good aged wine. There's descarga in here too, but the interplay between the instruments and the arrangements are really the gold of this album.Simply put, some of the world's best musicians (certainly the best in Latin music, although they are versatile enough to play anything) coming together in harmony for a CD that does justice to the Latin Jazz movement as a whole. If there ever was a latin jazz album, it's this one.I'd highly recommend it, along with other's, like GIovanni Hidalgo's Worldwide and other CDs.Good music.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SALSA + JAZZ ALBUM TITO!!!
This is one of those rare albums that makes you forget about your problems, and that by itself is wonderful!!! I can assure you the moment you start playing this album you'll start moving your feet...and the best is that you can hear it at your house, office, car, etc...5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album and greatest band Tito has ever lead
I've owned this cd for a year now and today I played it for the first time in several months and I had forgen how great it was. Not to mention it has an allstar jazz artists on itincluding Hilton Ruiz, Mongo Santamaria, Dave Valentin, and James Moody. It has a lot of jazz tracks and a little bit of latin jazz. 5-0 out of 5 stars Musical Excellence
I cannot stop listening to this fine CD which is two record albums combined: Cugat's Favorite Rumbas (Columbia, 1954) and Mambo at the Waldorf (Columbia, 1955). The compositions are classic and the sheer technical exuberance of Cugat's orchestra is astounding.
4-0 out of 5 stars My Opinion
I would love to be the person to select which songs to put on the CD.On this CD, I would definitelyNOT haveselections #5,6 10 and 11. I would probably not have #2,8 and 12. I would have all the rest and maybe have it twice with Begin the Beguine, Say Si Si, Besame Mucho, Mambo Gallego and Mambo Gordo [3 times]. I love these songs and the way Cugat has orchestrated them. My favorite rumba of all times--Siboney, is not on this CD. Xavier Cugat has recorded at least 5 different renditions of SIBONEY and every one of them is superb. Ernesto Lecuona would be proud [the composer of Siboney].

4-0 out of 5 stars MOST ARE GOOD___AFEW BAD
The first half of the album,4 or 5 of the songs should be left off of the CD---- however many are my favorites like Begin the Beguine, Green Eyes,Say Si Si, and especially Besame Mucho are great. The second part of the album [Mambo at the Waldorf], all are excellent---my favorite being Mambo Gordo. Thank you. ... Read more

Editorial Review

One of the key innovators in Latin jazz, percussionist Frank "Machito" Grillo fused deep percussive grooves with high-intensity horn sections and work by some of the greatest soloists of his era. These 24 sides, made in 1948 and '49 for producer Norman Granz's Clef label, are among the most striking examples of the form. Perfect for both listening and dancing, tracks such as "Asia Minor," "Gone City," and "Mambo Jambo" are endlessly fascinating. The truest test of Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Machito & His Orchestra- "Mucho Macho"
This is a great compilation most likely taken from mint condition 78 rpm singles recorded for Norman Granz' "CLEF" label in 1948 and 1949 in NYC. During those glorious years the Machito Jazz Band was at its peak, under the skillful musical direction of the great Mario Bauza, who at the time also lead the orchestra's trumpet section. The only flaw I find with this re-issue is that the sound quality needed improvement and didn't receive it. In re-issuing these priceless recordings, better masters should've been sought. Other than that it is perhaps the best compilation of Machito 1940's recordings. "Un Poquito de Tu Amor", "Asia Minor", "Cleopatra's Rhumba", "Llora Timbero", "Donkey Serenade',"St.Louis Blues",etc. are all masterpieces, the orchestration and musical arrangements and percussion are simply outstanding, but then that's what made the Machito Band outstanding and perhaps the best at that time. Don't miss this great CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flows beautifully for a spritual groovy listening experience
I finally found this album and I'm ready to buy.I listened to a recording of it and wasn't sure of the title until I searched all over the internet for it.The sounds and beats make you smile while bobing your head back and forth.its the kind of music that touches you deeply and makes your skin tingle.Warm ambient feeling especially on the first disc.I haven't got a chance to hear the second disc yet but I can expect the same high quality of soulful music.I never get tired of the music and enjoy it immensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic in all repspects
What can I say about this album?I read the review by the reader from Seoul and completely agree.I bought this disc in London and was able to listen to a few tracks off the "day" disc. They were fantastic. "Music Sounds Better with you" in particular.I thought "ifthe other disc is anywhere near this good, then I need to get it." Well it wasn't anywhere near as good, it was BETTER!The "night"disc would keep anyone, even your 88 year old grandma dancing all night andinto the morning and leave you with enough energy to dance some more (maybeat Space before you catch a plane out?)5-0 out of 5 stars muzik sounds mo' bettuh wit dis cd

5-0 out of 5 stars I never tire of his fabulous seductive voice....
Beny Mor, Born Bartolom Maximiliano Mor was the greatest singer Cubahas ever produced. His complete mastery of mambo, son, and the romanticboleros lent him a versatility unparalled to this day, and earned him afollowing that even today (I'm 26) appeals to listeners who never even hada chance to hear him while he was alive (he died 1963). Nevertheless hisjoyous, rambunctious, phrasing and tender romantic ballads thrill meeverytime I hear them. Songs such as AMOR SIN FE, MATA SIGUARAYA, AROMPER EL COCO remain close to my heart and stir nostalgic remembrances oftimes I wish I'd witnessed. Beny Mor is my idol. ... Read more
