You generally don't have to listen too hard to hear what's on the mind of Los Angeles music collective Ozomatli. The multi-faceted band is rarely subtle in its politics or its incorporation of countless Latin traditions as well as modern rock, jazz, pop and hip-hop. But on the band's third album, Read more

Led by the deep-toned Sen Dog and the deliciously adenoidal whine of B-Real and backed by DJ Muggs's beats--as thick as the smoke they inhaled--Cypress Hill spun dope-fueled tales of revenge, revolution, recreational drug use, gangbanging, and cultural pride. Like R. Crumb's Mr. Natural, but with a hardened voice and a B-boy attitude, Cypress Hill slow-walked their funk-flavored way through a minefield of anthems (the Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Original Hip-Hop Stoners
Cypress Hill took the gangsta rap style of NWA, the DJ'ing of Public Enemy, and the attitude of the Beastie Boys to a whole new level. So much credit is given to Dr. Dre's The Chronic, but you can tell he got ideas for the Chronic from Cypress Hill's groundbreaking debut.Dre even later bit some of their concert style.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
When I bought this CD the only song I knew was "How I Could Just Kill A Man". So I took a gamble that paid of. With DJ Mugg's funky beats my homie B-Real's flow(held it down for theMexican's like me)and Sen Dog's blunted vocals it was more than what I wanted. I thought all the songs were tight but the 3 that stood out were "How I Could Just Kill A Man" "Hand On The Pump" and "Real Estate". "Pigs" "The Phuncky Feel One" and Psycobetabuckdown" could have been better but this is a CD that won't make you regret gettin' it. Pick it up and you will see what I mean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hip-hop Perfection
Their debut they could never top. B Real's rhymes are complex and imaginitive, and through subsequent releases get more and more simple. Everything about this album, the beats, samples, rhymes, it's uniquness, makes it a king among kings in the hip-hop world. Did you know the guitar sample in the refrain of How I Could Just Kill A Man is from the Jimi Hendrix song Are You Experienced? ... Read more

Editorial Review

While North American rap drowns in its own clichés, international artists are invigorating the genre with their own musical traditions. The Orishas, a Cuban group based in France, use Afro-Cuban religion to summon the spirit of hip-hop. Named for gods of Santeria, they came together in 1998 when members Yotuel and Ruzzo hooked up with Roldan and Flaco-Pro (a veteran of Sergeant Garcia) through a cultural exchange program between French and Cuban rappers. Collaborating with French hip-hop producer Miko Niko, they bring the attitude of Havana streets to the rest of the world, appealing to the Buena Vista Social Club crowd as well as the hip-hop heads. 5-0 out of 5 stars Lo Mejor de lo Mejor!
When Orishas released this CD I was still living in Cuba. I used to listen to these songs all day long with my friends. Then I moved to US and what can I tell you? 537 Cuba is like an anthem for me because it really tells the reality about the feelings of Cuban people and perhaps every person that lefts his country likes us. On the other hand, these guys are amazing! The mixture of rap with traditional Cuban music is something original, out of this world. I don't like hip hop music at all, but Orishas are the exception. Buy this CD, it worth every penny, you won't be disappointed!

Multiculti Los Angeles-based 10-piece Ozomatli is more than the sum of their parts: hip-hop, salsa, and funk crash head-on in this surprisingly natural collaboration. Their self-titled debut makes Ozomatli sound like one of the world's great live shows--a party band with a brain--and they pull it off deftly. Rapper Chali 2na ("Charlie Tuna," get it?) has an authoritative voice and a way with words, mixing references from Edie Brickell to Ed McMahon; just he and the Cut Chemist (both of Jurassic 5), who lends his turntable skills to the proceedings, would make for an entertaining album. But it's the way that the two--when they're even featured--build on and blend into the grooves of the wah-pedal-and-brass-section-powered ensemble that sets Ozomatli apart. Danceable Read more

My friend from Cali introduced me to this band and I immedately loved them. From start to finish it is a great album, to the point where I bought all of their cds. Definately new and original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Astounding
This is one of the best Latino cd's I am proud to play in my rotation 6 years after the album was released. I first heard Ozomatli when they opened for Santana in Montreal and I was like woah! I was on my feet dancing throughout their opener. They were so pumped and hyped that no matter what mood you are in they just get you in this partying and dancing mood that you cannot resist. If you are the kind of person who loves those smooth Latino beats blended with a bit of everything for an ultimate summer driving cd be sure to pick this up!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a refreshing change
As a fan of J-5, the release of this album made sense, in that Jurassic 5 make a point of putting their music first and image last. Ten piece band 'Ozomatli' seem to work perfectly in tandem with Chali 2na an Cut Chemist, blending all of their styles so well that it sounds as if this is how hiphop should be- a fusion of a wide variety of styles. When this album came out, i would listen to it over and over again, and because of the albums' diversity, it never felt tiresome. It is very difficult to put into words how successful this collaboration is, buy it and you will understand. For those who dont want to buy it, download track such as:Read more

I like how South Park Mex represents his Neighboorhood calling it "The Land Of Hell" instead of Tha Hood or El Barrio, in which SPM raps about tough street life in the neighboorhoods of South Park, Hillwood, Reveille Park & South East Houston, TX.Mary-Go-Round is a laid back song about Carlos Coy's girlfriend Mary Jane, about smokin' on some Dank!South Park Mex's Screwed & Chopped Music is a diss to him because his voice is tight, man!

THis album is in no doubt SPM's best album to date. The beats are sweet, especially if your rollin' with subs in the trunk. His lyrics are funny, and they mean something at the same time. Honestly I own all of SPM's cd's and this one is the best. Some other good cd's are Time is Money and Baby Beesh's stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars asere, que bola?
orishas comes back with another amazing record!!this cd had me completely hooked!!as if "a lo cubano" wasn't amazing enough, the guys from orishas come back with a bang.even without flaco-pro, who had some serious skills.he left the group about 4 shows into a tour because his brother got in with some bad people in miami.he was killed, and flaco-pro turned to booze.but be on the look out for flaco, because word is he's still writing and collaborating and recording...
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as their first album
First of all, I am a huge rap and hip hop fan. I own albums from just about every rapper out there. Orishas first album "A lo Cubano" is one of my favorite rap albums of all time. "Emigrante" is a good encore for them but they clearly miss Flaco-Pro who in my opinion was by far their best flower and rhyme spitter. Apparently he had a falling out with the rest of them. He is the reason that their first album was so good. Without him, it seems that they got away from rap and went into more hip hop which is fine. Emigrante is good, but Orishas badly misses Flaco-Pro.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3rd Release By Orishas!
Orishas's 3rd work's release date is not official yet but will must likely come out around September 20th.... so be on the look out!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is reggaeton/Latin hip-hop to da core
Look dis guy below me is ridiculous....he must be one of them new reggaeton heads....your a hispanic probably just gettin into this. This album is wat baby rasta and gringo should be soundin like. This is Latin hip hop at its best and dis is gangsta to da core. The whole album is like a giant mix of everything they have sung before and up to 99'. If you think this album is whack den my friend u are not a true reggaeton head, at that you dont kno wats good and wats bad. Baby Rasta Y Gringo set a standard jus like everybody else back then about wats different between rappin and reggaeton......if you cant appreciate them rappin then you truely dont have the flow of reggaeton running thru you. Lemme Add that this is how baby rasta should sound instead of wat he did on his Album, "La Ultima Risa", which in my mind was weak listen to him on THE PROPHESY and on his new album and you can tell the difference

1-0 out of 5 stars not as kool
I just got this CD today was very excited to listen to it to my dissapointment is not as good as their later stuff so i cant recommend it dosent sound like reggaeton at all.

First off i knew the cd would be hot because dj nelson was featured on some tracks. Nelson was also featured in Luny Tunes mas flow album he's one of the best dj's around. Then to add to the mix you got baby rasta who absoulutely kills tracks maybe daddy yankee should learn from him. Gringo is ok but baby rasta's lyrics and nelson's beats keep this album fresh. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I always said and still say Mexicano 777 is the greatest out today, wether it's Hip-Hop or Reggaeton this Boriqua can do it all. This album is a must have and yes it is a classic. Not Daddy Yankee, Don Omar Tego or anyone else can touch this Guerrero. His music is deep, lyrical and insightful, if you don't feel the pain, anger, joy and sadness in his voice then you're just not listening. "Puerto Rico Stand Up!!!"

4-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS HIP HOP LATINS SHOULD BE PROUD OFF
I first heard Mexicano on the Tony Touch peacemaker cd and I remember enjoying his verse, his voice is distinct enough to stand out from the crowd and he seems to have a grasp on what true hip hop is. The whole album from start to finish is fantastic, Domingo who did the production should pat himself on the back he did a terrific job and Mexicano rides the beats well, his rapping both in english and spanish are decent and his sing along style flow is odd at first but once you get into it you accept it as part of what mexicano is all about.

Based on listening to Never Change- which was the first SPM CD I bought, I found this one, bought it and listened to it, I thought it was awful, tried listening to it again Monday and I just can't.I don't know if it's because it doesn't have enough bass, or most of the songs sound the same.Don't get me wrong- I loved NEver change, thought it was one of the best CD's I've ever heard, this one just doesn't cut it for me,I now use the CD's as coasters so I don't stain my tables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the best Hip-Hop in the World
Control Machete is very fast becoming one of my favorite groups.I do not consider myself a hip-hop fan, nor do I speak very much Spanish.I was introduced to them through Spike Jones' commercial and their single "Si Senor."I had no idea that the rest of their music was even less repetive and so much more creative. If you understand even a little Spanish, you will realize how much deeper than typical American music they allow their lyrics to be.Their "Control Machete" song is a fun one that lets you believe you are listening to them live in concert somewhere, but creatively intertwines Mexican melodies and keeps it pretty fresh.Cheve is also very fun, and almost a Mexican rendition that will remind you of the skill of groups like the Sugar Hill gang back in the day.
3-0 out of 5 stars off the wall stuff
i first heard of this group way back when, like in 1998. i didnt get their cd till ike 2 months ago cuz i had umm "aquired" the music by other means, if you will. but finally i decided to buy it becausae i liked it that much. its a good cd, they rap about some crazy stuff. some of the beats could use a little hlep, but all in all its a good cd. i would reccomend it to people. now, understand that this is mexican rap and it will be different from the stuff you are used to if you only listen to stuff in english.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome, mexican rap for the soul
i heared comprendes mendes? on a rock/rap en espanol mixer and the rest of their stuff is pretty fantastic too. they are more hardcore than molotov but not quite gangsta. im really into mexican rap/rock, so if anyone knows any tight artists- please post them! enjoy control machete! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rollin' in my 64' Rag Top!
South Park Mex does it again with his Dope House Army, the song You Know My Name got me into SPM, and 1 tight cruisin' song is Rollin' for cruisin' in your Cadillac Seiville or 6Deuce Impala.South Park Mex duz another hard & heavy H-Town hit We Did Dat, and how can a nigga like me forget the song Whatever You Do!
3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as his other Albums
I picked this Album up a while back.Usually I listen through it and throw it in my Alpine and go cruising. This Album I listened to it through and it was somewhat dissapointing. If you only buy one SPM album, make it "3rd wish" or "Never Change"

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the best hip-hop in the world
I'm not a big fan of American rap or hip-hop.The occasional group or single catches my ear and I may listen.Like many before me, I first discovered this group through Spike Jones' commercial which features the song on this album "Si Senor."I understand very little Spanish (enough to know Control Machete is somewhat cavalier about their cursing, not very different from American groups).
5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than the other albums
This is the album where it all comes together well. I bougth this album based on the strenght of one song, Si Senor. Which I heard from the levis commercial. when I saw that commerical I thought it was a wicked song. And I searched for who the band was, then got the album. Now I listen to it all the time. There are other great songs on this album as well.
