5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guitar Duo
This is a fabulous, very high energy, instrumental album. Rodrigo and Gabriela combine their metal roots with latin melodies, and use the guitar as a percussion instrument in a way I've never seen before. See them live if you can. They grew up in Mexico city trying to make it playing in a metal band, and are now living in Ireland with this album that hit the top of the Irish music charts.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING.
This is an unbelievable album, and I definitely recommend it. Rodrigo y Gabriela are two amazingly talented musicians. The way they mix so many different genres is incredible and makes the music they create unique, fun, and exciting. A friend recommended them to me, and I was a bit skeptical at first as I've never even really thought about listening to a guitar album, but now I'm completely hooked. I've found it's great to have on in the background in my dorm, and everyone that's heard it in my room has loved it as well. To sum things up, BUY THIS ALBUM! It is well worth it! ... Read more

Fantastic and mindblowing guitarists. The entire album is beautful and masterfully done which is so different from anything done today. AMAZING!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW -- this is Fantastic!
My wife and I were driving to a friend's when the local rock station played the first cut "Tamacun" and we decided it was amazing and decided to pre-order it. I am thrilled ... listening to it for the first time, I'm over halfway through and there's not a bad piece in the bunch. Absolutely incredible work, and well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm gonna have to agree
This is a really great record. The cover caught my eye on iTunes and I sampled it and ended up buying the album. Fantastic production and lovely tones. Toe-tapping and dark in places. The Orion cover is a must-have.

Editorial Review

This album pairs one of the greatest flamenco singers of today, cantaor Diego El Cigala, with one of Cuba's finest Afro-Cuban pianists, Bebo Valdes. With Valdes (father of the great Chucho Valdes) born in 1918, there's a 40-year age difference between the pianist and the singer, but they do a fine job crossing generations and oceans to discover the commonalities between Caribbean and the Iberian music, coming up with a romantic marriage of the two cultures using rumbas, guajira, sons and boleros. All the songs are classics out of the Latin music tradition, using just a handful of players in support. Valdes's fingers are delicate and prone to dramatic flourishes; Cigala's voice is pure flamenco in its hoarse intonation, cadence and emotional outpourings. The two masters make the union work by focusing on the drama of the love songs--"Veinte Años," "Inolvidable" and the title track are just three amazing examples--as fuel for some of the most exquisitely passionate music to come out in ages.--Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm dancing as I write this!!!
While I am not a music connoisseur, I can tell you that my whole family LOVES this album. From my 34 yr. old husband right down to our 1 yr. old son and all others in between. You will not be disappointed! This is our favorite album of the summer and we try hard to be flamenco dancers while singing along and cleaning the house-it's quite a show, I assure you...

5-0 out of 5 stars Rumba Flamenca I love!
I must say that the Gypsy Kings are simply musical geniuses. Every song of theirs is a "Hit" in itself. The history of how they came together is also very fascinating. I grew up listening to these guys thanks to my dad. The first time I heard the Gypsy Kings was in 1991 (this is when I didn't even know who they were!). When sitting in the car, he would pop his cassette in the tape player and all of a sudden, this music would put me in a trance. I finally found out who they were in 96' and I was glad that I did. Bem, Bem Maria; Tu Quieres Volver, and El Verano are my all time favorites. I could listen to these 3 songs over and over and never get tired of it. It's not only the strong rhythm that they bring in their music, but its also the hard melody they play out in all of their studio recordings. For anyone who is reading this and is not familiar with the Gypsy Kings, I suggest you buy an album from them. I recommend "Volare! - The Very Best Of The Gipsy..." Since it has all their greatest hits. Once you do, you will fall in love with the sounds of Rumba Flamenca!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Volume in Great Series
I love this CD (and the others in the series) because they instantly create the mood you are after. In this case, if you want Latin sounds and rhythms, you pop this CD into your stereo and you're instantly transported away. I often play this CD at work because it provides a nice backdrop of sound that's upbeat without being too distracting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Draws you in...
Yes,its true. From the first track onward, this album draws you in with its storytelling, spoken word and soothing melodies. At first glance, this wasn't something I would listen to but, alas after my first listen, it was hard for me to listen to anything else for a week!! Putumayo always does it right when they put together a project.Standout tracks are "Reflejo de Luna", "Caminhos de Cuba",and "Carmela".Any Putumayo fan will not be disappointed.

This dynamic duo of Dominican pianist-composer Michel Camilo and Spanish flamenco guitarist Tomatito is an intricate improvisational exchange that traverses the Afro-Iberian world, from the Moorish castles of Alhambra to the azure-tinged Caribbean coasts of Havana and Santo Domingo. Camilo and Tomatito met in Spain in the early 1990s, performed together in 1997, and toured in the summer of 1999. Camilo's florid and fleet-fingered, classically trained pianism is a beautiful counterpoint to Tomatito's passionate, plectral poetry, which combines the precision of the great classical guitaristAndrés Segovia and the flair of Paco De Lucia. Together, they reinterpret the works of several Latin composers with vigor and vitality, including Consuelo Velazquez's immortal bolero/cancion, "Besame Mucho," and Luis Salinas's elegant "Aire de Tango." Camilo's "Two Much/Love Theme" and Tomatito's "La Vacilona" highlight the depth and breadth of their interplay. They reach their zenith on "Spain Intro," their incredible adapted Joaquin Rodrigo's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into their awesome chemistry!
I regularly go the Blue Note here in NYC and got the chance to see Michel Camilo live on this one night.I didn't expect to see what I saw! I've always known how awesome a pianist Michel Camilo is but when I saw Tomatito, I was in awe of Tomatito's technique. I was about 10 feet away from him and I couldn't figure out how he was getting all those beautiful sounds. I was so anxious to get the CD but everywhere I turned to didn't have it.When I got it, I was a little disappointed.Just a little...When I saw them live, THEY WERE 10 TIMES BETTER THAN ON THE CD, if you can imagine that! The CD doesn't do them justice but it comes pretty close.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vergatario!!
The recording quality is superb, and the artistic balance just perfect. Nobody on top of anybody.Camilo's versatility is outstanding: from tango-to rumba-to bulerias with an amazing fluidity. I wish the pair had recorded a few more tunes for this CD.But I am being selfish here.Recommended without reservations and indispensable for those who love "latin jazz". ... Read more

Many subtly varied kinds of music fall under the rubric of flamenco, which is a style of singing, dancing, and even living, as well as playing the guitar. This collection presents a good guitar selection, highlighted by the polished technique of Sabicas, the profundity of Manolo de Huelva, and the sheer brilliance of Melchor de Marchena. There is a drastic change of atmosphere in the transition from track 10 (a Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is where my flamenco journey began
Not only is this CD flamenco puro at its best, It almost defines flamenco puro. The performers are all famous (sabicas, nino ricardo, manolo de huelva and Melchor de Marchena). The performances are old (40-50 years +) and are true to the spirit of flamenco puro.
5-0 out of 5 stars For all lovers of true Flamenco
With all the 'Neuvo Flamenco' and its accompaning popularity. It is nice (and a relief) I might add, to hear the flamenco guitar in its purist form. Not only does this cd contain Sabicas and Nino Ricardo. It also contains four very rare perfomances by Manolo de Huelva. Which are difficult to find anywhere. Also included are Melchor de Marchena performing six pieces. This is truly Pure Flamenco at its best.

This live recording from 1980 matched fusion guitar heavyweights Al DiMeola and John McLaughlin with Spanish guitar whiz Paco DeLucia. The result, a dazzling technical display, also earned jeers as the international summit of world-class finger-wigglers by critics who felt it was long on chops and short on heart. John McLaughlin's importance to the development of the jazz fusion scene can't be overestimated: as the guitarist on Miles Davis's seminal Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A mind blowing masterpeice that puts shred head posers to shame
This is my first encounter with flamenco guitar playing. To say the least, im still icing my jaw from when it hit the floor when i heard the guitars for the first time. These songs are something to listen and be inspired by awe. The technique is second to none, the harmonies make Iron Maiden (whom I love) look like a garage band. These are some of the most influential and respected guitar players to ever pick up the instrument. The songs are long and sometimes u find yourself daydreaming. But when you concentrate and listen to the playing, i dare you to not be amazed. If you are a guitar player of any style, listen to this cd. It will amaze you and make u strive for the excellence that is Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucia, and John McLaughlin

This is one super-talented young artist!Jesse Cook has an unusual style, combining Spanish Flamenco with Middle Eastern. The band must keep a fire extinguisher close by Mr. Cook as he flashes up and down the fretboard, tracing fire on the strings of his guitar.I like to listen to Jesse Cook as I work in my pottery studio. The energy passes from the recording of Jesse's hands on the guitar, to my hands on the clay.I have bought all the currently avauilable albums Jesse has published.

This CD will undoubtedly bring running all the barking dogs that cry out "The Gipsy Kings are not Flamenco!"However, the dogs may find themselves sitting quietly and listening, for while this is not the sort of music which will wring cries of "Puro Gitano!" from serious Flamenco fans, it is nonetheless very good music. It is certainly the best music that the Gipsy Kings have produced in a very long time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gipsy Kings Roots
This is their best yet!! I have been a Gipsy Kings fan since I first heard Bamboleo.Their music gets into your soul and makes you feel good. I have recently received their new DVD Gipsy Kings 'Tierra Gitana and Live in Concert'It is really great!!! I had Tierra Gitana on a VHS but it has been played so much that it is hard to see.I write poetry and the Gipsy Kings have inspired me to write more.I hope they keep up the good work.I would love to know where I can send them my poetry they have inspired me to write. Sincerely, MarciaI am an adult 50 yrs. old, not a kid. Couldn't find where to send a regular review.

Ottmar Liebert's most famous, if not most accomplished, effort gave a new genre its title, the New Age market a new champion, and flamenco purists--like Paco de Lucia, who despite a thank-you on the album, has called Liebert's music "worthless"--a new punching bag. All of which is a little beside the point; Liebert's rhythms may not be complex Read more

I love this CD, I could listen to it all day long.Wonderful flamenco, makes me feel like I am on vacation in Cancun.Great to listen to while vacuuming - really brightens the mood around the house. If you like fabulous guitar flamenco music you will love this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly inspiring !!!
I have listened and studied this album over and over again it truly is a work of art. I found it so inspiring that after years and years of bouncing around bands and different musical styles I found my one true love, modern Flamenco. My CD "Changes" would have never been conceived if not for the incredible influence of Ottmar. And for that I say thank you. I hope that everyone will perchance this CD and find the Joy that I have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Album
I like this CD. It like adding a new dimension to the New Age/folk crossover genre. I am a huge instrumental music aficionado (not into vocals/lyrics very much). and the quality of music is in the eye of the beholder. My guess is the first two reviewers are into the vocal pop music, Hispanic type salsa flamenco stuff, and thats fine. No need to knock on those of us who into unconventional forms of musical enjoyment. At any rate Liebert has a good musical rhythm, a la Shahin & Sepehr with a little Steve Glotzer mixed in. Unique. 5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful reflections
Having just returned to England after a long spell living in Spain I was searching for an evocative suite of Spanish guitar music to accompany my extensive array of photographic studies. Being familiar with the work 'Recuerdos de la Alhambra' I was immediately attracted to this compilation: 'Reflections of Spain'. The music was a revelation. David Russel made the guitar sing lyrically, recalling many bitter sweet moments of life in Iberia. The light and shade of the choices included covered such a broad scope as to fit my purpose exactly and give enjoyment better than I could have hoped for.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is the best Spanish guitar CDs that I have found.Even with "Essential Guitar: 33 Guitar Masterpieces" having more tracks and two CDs, this is better material.I am not saying that "33 Guitar Masterpiece" was bad, I actually rate it second. No need to skip through "Reflections" like many other compilations of this mixed type CD.The quaility is crisp but lower overall peak (loudness) sound compared to some of my other CDs.Read reviews of other CDs of this type because there is many that have substandard recording measures.I believe this is a must for the any guitar lover!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another Spanish guitar music....
Like every one else I have probablyheard all other worthy versions of most of these tunes....I happened to find out about David Russell via reading a bio of Barrios and recommended recordings....it said...Dave Russell is the man...I had not heard of him before that...I got the CD...and WOW...!!then I got interested in his music so I bought anything I could from him including the Aire latino , plays Bach and this one....this guy was born to play the classical guitar...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great music, no matter what you call it!
As I understand it, some purists would not call this Flamenco music of any kind, but it is wonderful and energizing to listen to nonetheless. The level of virtuosity on guitar displayed on this album is really incredible, and the delightful variety of songs is really nice.As a degreed musician and professional harpist, I have a tremendous respect for the level of musicianship demonstrated on this album. This is my first sampling of "New Flamenco" music, but it certainly will not be my last.A big plus for me is that it is all instrumental, so I'm not tempted to sing along, much to the relief of my fellow bus riders and coworkers!

3-0 out of 5 stars Gypsy Soul is OK
I have other gypsy/flamenco CDs, and purchased this one based on some other reviewers comments (on the other CDs).I prefer the CD Gypsy Passion over this one by a wide margin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hallelujah Jaleo!
GYPSY SOUL is the wonderful follow-up disc to Narada's earlier release GYPSY PASSION. Together the two discs comprise two of the finest compilations of the "New Flamenco" style heard anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flamenco and hip hop fusion that works
Ojos de Brujo, "Eye of the Wizard", is a musician collective from Catalan Spain. Their music base is Flamenco but they bravely mix hip-hop, rap, and jazz in a fused frenzy of originality. Unlike most music fusions, Ojos de Brujo is able to remain true to its roots and still produce a unique sound. Their Bari Album of 2002 is their second release and the first time I heard it I was amazed at how they were able to join the deeply emotional lyrics of Flamenco with the more urban and street sound of hip-hop. Their lead singer, Marina Abad, can inspire deep emotions with her traditional Flamenco renditions but she inspires amazement when she breaks into a rap in the middle of the song Zambra. I hate to admit that I have been very biased when it comes to hearing rap from European bands, and usually found their attempts innocent at best, compared to the more real sound we hear in the USA. But Ojos de Brujo pulls it off because they are rapping about their emotions and world, and are able to incorporate rap lyrics into the pulse and rhythm of Flamenco, a music genre that is very much in their blood as much as culture. Do not get me wrong, 75% of the music is Flamenco on this album, but just when you think it is just the same traditional beat, they mix it up and hit you with a completely new sound. Ojos de Brujo is one of those jewels of originality and inspiration that you find by word of mouth, or by mistake, but when you hear them you know you are listening to something special. Ojos de Brujo's Bari album is a fruit of that genius and like all genius; it is fleeting and only temporary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rare energy
This isn't flamenco fused with anything, this is a brand new recipe and it comes off fantastic.Energetic, with a strong flamenco beat cooked in with a variety of styles to produce an amazing collection of really excellent songs. If you like any of the new style flamenco with a beat, this is a must.Of the 30 second sample cuts provided by Amazon, listen to #2 Tiempo De Solea, and #5 Quien Engana No Gana, that will give you an excellent idea of how strong this album is.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent music from Spain
I heard this for the first time in Mexico City, and I just absolutely loved it from the outset. Especially thrilling is track 5 "quien engana no gana." An incredibly successful blend of traditional and modern. Also check out Radio Tarifa. ... Read more
