    Editorial Review

Many subtly varied kinds of music fall under the rubric of flamenco, which is a style of singing, dancing, and even living, as well as playing the guitar. This collection presents a good guitar selection, highlighted by the polished technique of Sabicas, the profundity of Manolo de Huelva, and the sheer brilliance of Melchor de Marchena. There is a drastic change of atmosphere in the transition from track 10 (a Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is where my flamenco journey began
Not only is this CD flamenco puro at its best, It almost defines flamenco puro. The performers are all famous (sabicas, nino ricardo, manolo de huelva and Melchor de Marchena). The performances are old (40-50 years +) and are true to the spirit of flamenco puro.
5-0 out of 5 stars For all lovers of true Flamenco
With all the 'Neuvo Flamenco' and its accompaning popularity. It is nice (and a relief) I might add, to hear the flamenco guitar in its purist form. Not only does this cd contain Sabicas and Nino Ricardo. It also contains four very rare perfomances by Manolo de Huelva. Which are difficult to find anywhere. Also included are Melchor de Marchena performing six pieces. This is truly Pure Flamenco at its best.

5-0 out of 5 stars RAW, hard core, Flamenco Guitar!!!

    Editorial Review

This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing
I've had this cd for about 10 years now, and I've loved every minute of it again and again. Every song has its own beauty, in a very diverse way. The performance in "Chega de Saudade" is particularly riveting, each instrument delivering an absolutely perfect solo.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!
These are the most beautiful collection of songs from Jobim, if you want the best of the best from this song-writer-performer, this is it! Loved it.

After listening to electronic sounding classical music for my baby after so many months, this beautifuly sung/played CD does the trick to ease her to sleep. I play it just for me sometimes!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST LULLABY ALBUM en español!
As an educator planning to raise my children bilingually, I was very happy to discover this CD. My collection of materials would not be complete without it. It is absolutely beatiful and I can't wait to sing along to many of these songs to put my little one to sleep. I find listening to it now (baby is on the way) very soothing and would actually recommend it to anyone who wants to add traditional music in Spanish to their collection. This album is easy to listen to again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great music, no matter what you call it!
As I understand it, some purists would not call this Flamenco music of any kind, but it is wonderful and energizing to listen to nonetheless. The level of virtuosity on guitar displayed on this album is really incredible, and the delightful variety of songs is really nice.As a degreed musician and professional harpist, I have a tremendous respect for the level of musicianship demonstrated on this album. This is my first sampling of "New Flamenco" music, but it certainly will not be my last.A big plus for me is that it is all instrumental, so I'm not tempted to sing along, much to the relief of my fellow bus riders and coworkers!

3-0 out of 5 stars Gypsy Soul is OK
I have other gypsy/flamenco CDs, and purchased this one based on some other reviewers comments (on the other CDs).I prefer the CD Gypsy Passion over this one by a wide margin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hallelujah Jaleo!
GYPSY SOUL is the wonderful follow-up disc to Narada's earlier release GYPSY PASSION. Together the two discs comprise two of the finest compilations of the "New Flamenco" style heard anywhere.

Sounds great and very well put together. But, If you don't like the live concert sound with audience background noise this cd is not for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahhh, real salsa, the kind you rarely hear anymore!
Every single artist on this CD wears a crown for his/her craft! The days when you could (without fear) stand and dance to the music at the Fania All Stars at Madison Square Garden are gone...but the legacy will never fade. This CD envelops the hearer with the sound of every instrument played and the ballads bathe your ears like a warm waterfall.A must-have for every latino who truly appreciates his/her culture!Pass it on to the next generation.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Salsa Artistes At Play
Live performances that should please both salsa and jazz fans. The Artistes are evidently having a good time playing with and to the audience, judging by the amount of applause generated at appropriate moments. It all makes you wish that you had been there in Madison Square Garden.

More than merely a variant on the traditional samba beat, the bossa nova has had a rich life since it emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s. It was introduced to American audiences by returning jazz musicians, including guitarist Charlie Byrd, who shared some its most famous tunes with saxophonist Stan Getz. Getz's sweet, breathy tenor saxophone was its ideal American voice, and the bossa nova quickly became a popular craze, spurred by Getz's recordings with the composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto (especially Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive survey of classical themes!

4-0 out of 5 stars Música brasileira agradável às orelhas
I became a fan of Brasilian music when I became a fan of the Portuguese language, which was soon after I learned exactly what Rio de Janeiro is. For years, I had heard "A Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Ipanema") and didn't know what it was, but when I finally discovered it, I wanted to have a copy. So, I bought this album. Although, to me, that is the highlight of the album, the other tracks are not let-downs by any means. The track that opens up the album is the beautiful "A Felicidade" ("Happiness") from the 1959 film "Black Orpheus" or, as it is in Portuguese "Orfeo Negro." The songs continue to be beautiful throughout. My personal favorites are the two aforementioned as well as "Agua de Beber" ("Water to Drink"), "Bim Bom," "Superbacana," "Aquele Abrao" (loosely, "I Embrace That One") "guas de Maro" ("Waters of March"), and "Corcovado," the most romantic of all the tracks. I really do not understand why the disc is advertised as "perfect for romance" because it really is not. The vast majority of the songs are a bit more fast-paced and the lyrics tend to not be about romance, and the interludes do tend to be a simple cacophony of street sounds from So, Bahia, or Rio. Don't get me wrong, the disc is great, but if you're looking for romantic, try the Isley Brothers or one of those Time Life "Body and Soul" discs. However, if you're looking for good Brasilian classics, pick this up.

5-0 out of 5 stars a real baby bopper
this cd is the bomb.my 16 month old son loves to listen to the cool sounds this cd beams out and jigs along with a smooth yet syncopated ease.it truly is a voyage of discovery from beginning to end, sure enough to bring a smile, forlorn regrets, and maybe even a romantic tear.the powerful ebb and sway of the music reminds me of the seaside, and the bouyant energy of the culture bringing us this fine music. ... This CD is fantastic for anyone who loves Flaminco and the Flaminco guitar. It surges with energy and might just have you "dancing in the streets" or rushing out to sign up for lessons.Enjoy it; you won't be disappointed.P.S. I have heard and seen live Flaminco in Seville, more than once, and this one really took me back with even greater awe and admiration, in addition to the otherwise wonderful memories.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit of the new and old
ARC records produces great traditional flamenco artists that never disappoints.I got this cd based on that. However, about half the tracks are "New World", "Nouveau", or new flamenco with Latin beats and such. Those tracks are still good but I'm all hardcore "Old World" flamenco.By all means this compilation cd provides the listener with both old and modern flamenco songs that are quite interesting.Great value for the buck and I'm sure the intention of ARC records was to expose Flamenco music at an intro price.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Will Be Happy
You will be happy you chose this cd. Its upbeat and passionate. The music gets you off your seat flamenco dancing, even if you don't know how it doesn't matter. I discovered it while purchasing a couple much more expensive flamenco recordings. This was so inexpensive I figured it was worth the risk. And, this is the one album I listen to again and again. It makes everyone happy with the compilation of beautiful dance rhythms and some vocals. Highly recommended as a sampler of flamenco music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic album
I love the Putumayo series, as it introduces people to music that they otherwise may not hear. Like this album, for example. I was not really familiar with Puerto Rican music. And some people I know just assume it is like Ricky Martins stuff. But how wrong they are (thank God!). This is a wonderful album, and I will most certainly try to aquire more music from these featured artists. In particular, Eddie Palmieri. I just love his track "Cafe". But each and every artist on here is wonderful that I would like to hear more. The 27 page booklet is written in English and Spanish and features an essay about Puerto Rico, as well as a photo and information on each artist. I recommend this album to everyone who would like an instant pick-me-up. It makes you feel like dancing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Latino, Latino
I actually heard this CD at a Training seminar before I actually bought it.The music is terrific.

5-0 out of 5 stars Latino all the way!
A great compilation of music from the roots of Africa, Cuba and Latin America interpreting the Cuban son better known today as "Salsa", other musicians from Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela are here too with their traditional rhythms that have been incorporated in the Afro-Cuban sounds. My favorite is a duo "Besame Mama" with Poncho Sanchez (a Chicano from California) and my favorite the king conga player, (Cuban born) Mongo Santamaria. This CD is very good for all Latinos in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro to Spanish language music
I'll never forget seeing the trailer for Amores Perros the first time. The film looked intersting, but the thing that blew me away was the music.Turns out it was Control Machete's "De Amores Perros".I didn't understand a word of it, but I wanted to hear it again and it bounced around in my head for days until I received the CD.I have eclectic music tastes in general, but this CD opened a whole new world of music for me.
5-0 out of 5 stars great soundtrack
It is totally urban , so if youre looking for music for travelling around a major city like mexico city , you will feel inside the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this though I do not know Spanish
I loved all the songs on this cd set. I'm not much into OSTs, but after seeing the movie, I decided to add this to my collection though I did not know Spanish, afterall, music does not have any language!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly beautiful
This CD is one of the most relaxing and amazingly beautiful albums I have heard in a long time. Perfect for a romantic night at home or a relaxing massage at a spa.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passionate and Hauntingly Beautiful
I have to recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates beautiful music that soothes the soul and ignites the heart. This CD takes you to another world. It is also perfect for setting the mood. Play it while soaking in the bath with wine and candles. Or just play it while lying in bed at night, relaxing. The haunting tones and passion that goes into the different tracks demonstrates the dedication of the artists featured. Each artist is true to the genre yet with a heat and style all their own. I recommend most on the CD #4 and #10. Makes you want to put on your best dress, and dance a passionate tango with a loved one (or by yourself!) I didn't know what to expect when I purchased it, thinking no one can top the Gipsy Kings. But I was pleasantly surprised and entranced by the music I heard flowing out of my radio. Everyone I have played it for wanted a copy or tried to steal it! It's worth the money, and the artists on the disk are phenomenalguitarists. If you have never listened to New Flamenco before, this is a great introduction. Each song is long enough, but still leaves you wanting more. I now am looking to buy the individual CD's from each artist, especially Jose Luis and Jesse Cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
I bought this cd upon recommendation by the cd shopowner and have never regret it. Whilst most of the tracks are right on to it but i'm a bit disappointed with cook. However, it is worth buying. ... Read more

Having witnessed the rise of Tango Nuevo, the refurbishing of Argentina's best-known native music by bandoneon maestro Astor Piazzolla, listeners might muse a bit that "New Flamenco" is an odd renovation to the Spanish guitar music's storied traditions. Odd or not, the music is certainly popular. Read more

*Guitar Greats, The Best of New Flamenco* at first sight might look like one of those `Various Artists' loss leader compilations you see on Info-mercials or UHF stations at two in the morning.Or you might mistake it for the traditional, Segovia version of flamenco. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT CAN I SAY???
When it comes to those hard to find chicano oldies this collection has got it. Every song on the collection was a hit at it's time and still is today. When i'm talking (Tell Her She's Lovely) by (el Chicano) or maybe even a real love song oldie like (Mujer Mia) by (Joe Bataan) or even (Si Me Paro) by (Johnny Chingas) or (Cinco De Mayo) A not to popular but firme oldie by (war) or most of you chicanos have probably herd of the song (Chicano Park) that was built for the hispanic community. How could you forget it. This is just some of them theres even more. This is 1 collection that really exsplains the ways of the chicano life style. We will always have those memories of back in the days drinking and having partys, making romance with your loved, one or even just kickin back listing to something thats was good worth listing to. I will never forget those days when all this was in and to think we havent changed much, even if you think you have, get this collection and just kick back and you start to remember all those firme oldies and good times. This is 1 collection you chicanos would love my personal favorite song (Mujer Mia) by (Joe Bataan) but all these songs are a chingon must have in your oldies collection cause this is what true chicanos are all about cruisin with the homies, bumpin these oldies down hiland street, as for other chicano oldies collection nothing can beat!!! or even compete!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection
All I have to say is that this is a great collection of Chicano cruisin' classics andkickin' it lovesongs. Man it really is a soundtrack to the Chicano lifestyle. A complete collection of the best. The best collection next to this is "Back to the barrio" - rare and hard to find Chicano classics vol. 1. this has many out of print and rare songs from back in the day. It has latin rock, latin funk, and latin soul. contact Chorizo Recordswww.chorizomusic2003@yahoo.com
