5-0 out of 5 stars GIVE CREDIT WHERE IS DUE: EXCELLENT ALBUM!
This past Sunday, the "Miss Universe Pageant" was on and I just happened to flip the channel when Chelo came out to perform. At first, I said "oh no another hip hop/reggaeton/fusion singer." The following day the beat/rhythm of the Chelo's song, CHA CHA kept ringing in my ears. The beat kept on vibrating in my consciousness, it was actually communicating to me. I felt compelled to buy Chelo's CD. I loved it. WOW, I was more than impressed. This man is actually a poet with SOUL!!! The rhythm of the music, the spiritual lyrics and a velvety voice, to say the least. I ALWAYS GIVE CREDIT WHERE IS DUE, CHELO, YOU ARE THE BOMB! God's time is not the same as man's time. This is your time and place to soar like an EAGLE!! I strongly recommend this cd, you will not regret it!!!!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars this bloke is overrated
he was cool in 1999, even his second english album had some decent tracks but that was his creative peak. One would think that after travelling around the world including places like india, ricky would have drawn a lot of inspiration for his music. He tried but he failed. This music just isn't good. I gave this album a second chance recently and it still sounds horrible! He can't decide whether he wants to be hip hop or bollywood or what. He should just stick to what he does best with his latin-fused pop/rock sound instead of trying too hard to appear as a serious, credible artist.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Album
I love Ricky and I think he is great at what he does. However, this album did not meet my expectations at all. I only like 1 or 2 songs. I think Ricky could have done way better. If i could return my cd and get my money back I would. There go 15 bucks I'll never see again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for romantics - a perennial classic!
I used to be a romatic guy when I was very young, but then I switched to a more upbeat type of music when I got older (age crisis?) Well, this CD really brought back the old romantic guy I was. If you claim being a romantic one, then this must be in your collection. I love to play it and dance with my wife, even in front of our boys, so they know what true romance is. Perfect for baby-making nights, it will relax you and get all the right senses ready. Yeah!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't speak spanish but heart does the translation.
Oh how his voice gives me emotional goose bumps.I cannot speak or understand spanish, but my heart takes care of this short coming. The voice is warm, romantic, soothing to my soul with orchestration to die for.To my English speaking friends go ahead and get this classic, your heart will thank you.

What music, what an artist! My husband and I were at the Radisson in Miami, sitting at the bar and waiting for an open table for dinner.I heard this "music" coming from the speakers, it gave me goosebumps!I asked the bartender who it was singing and he said Luis Miguel.Well, I was hooked from then on.It's been 5 yrs. since that night and I've got I believe just about every CD he's made.I find myself singing along to all the songs, learning & speaking a little Spanish too!The songs he sings in Spanish sound so much more romantic than when you hear them in English, at least I think so. The bartender saw how much I loved the CD, he played it again just for me! I think Luis is wonderul and I plan to see him in concert if he ever comes my way.My husband even likes his songs. I personally would rate this 10 Stars if I could! ... Read more

Great authentic Mariachi music by the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent !
This is one of the best albums of mariachi music I ever owned, I carry it with me to play it on the subway, and in my car. Most of the songs are popular, but it's still wonderful to listen. thier intereptation of Besame Mucho is still the best, and this song has been sang by almost everybody who can sing. I especially love La Malaguena, Las Mananitas and Cucurrucu Paloma. This CD is a delight, a must have for evert music fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Buy!
i bought this CD after listening to the clips on Amazon and the Putomayo Website. The tunes are well thought out and catchy. You'll be singing along to Pino Pino (and you probably won't even know the words). I listen to this CD when I drive my car during traffic, or have dinner guests. It really feels like I'm in Greece when I listen to it.To boot, the cover is made of a durable cardboard painting which opens up and voila! Inside it is a mini booklet of beautiful Greek photographs.5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, yes, yes!
Now and then a compilation of different artists hits the jackpot- this one is a winner. Many CDs with Greek music are disappointing because they have one sing-along bouzouki cut after another. 5-0 out of 5 stars Catch Luciana at the Ojai Music Festival this June 2006
I don't understand a Word of Portuguese but can listen to this recording over and again. L Souza is an extremely gifted artist who has yet to be more widely recognized in the US.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful cd
This is a lovely collection by Luciana Souza. To me she is like Monica Salmaso, a curator of wonderful songs. Every song iselegantly presented and the liner notes are helpful in conveying the meaning to those of us who are linguistically challenged. Luciana Souza's intelligence and the beauty of her work is the antidote to the "American Idol" style of singing that sells so well, but means so little. It is music for grown-ups.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Does Not Disappoint
"Neruda" was one of the most creative and interesting albums released in 2004.Among other questions, it raised this one:What can Luciana Souza possibly do for an encore?

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming and Captivating: a Winner
Here's a most delightful vocal CD by John Pizzarelli consisting of fine interpretations of familiar and not so familiar tunes, all backed up with excellent accompaniment. Pizzarelli's somewhat nasal baritone is instantly recognizable, and all of the selections here except one feature his singing. (The one exception is an original of John's, a slow ballad, and very pretty.) Harry Allen's tenor sax can be found on a handful of the cuts, adding a decided jazz feel as well as his own brand of lyricism. AIN'T THAT A KICK IN THE HEAD is a highlight of the CD - it's a cute Cahn-Van Heusen composition, the kind of song Pizzarelli is a specialist at; Harry takes a nice solo, too. COFFEE, BLACK is another snazzy tune with an interesting scat vocal by John that blends compellingly with his guitar playing. On QUALITY TIME he sings a duet with his wife, Jessica Molaskey, a singer who reminds me a little of Blossom Dearie. John takes on a very Chet Baker-like sound to his vocal on the slow ballad THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE. All in all, this is a very pleasant, handsomely produced CD, another one of the many excellent albums Pizzarelli has issued over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars So easy on the ears and heart, but what a kick!
If you've never heard John Pizzarelli's music, it's the ultimate mix of incredible musicianship performed in a way that sounds so easy, so stress-free, so happy."Knowing You", as in other albums, has original tunes which reveal depth of feeling disguised in swing, scat, clever vocal duets ("Quality Time").
4-0 out of 5 stars The uptunes are sensational; however....
I wanted to love this album; I really did.I have asked myself why I believe that the current crop of young women jazz singers are so much better than the current crop of young men jazz singers.I thought this one would prove me blessedly wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wild, crazy, campy, a great retro listen
There are two types of lounge music - the more laid back and dull orchestra kind (Jackie Gleason's work falls into that category) and the more surrealistic and wild space age stuff that holds up surprisingly well today as an entertaining listen (Esquivel falls into the latter category). Sorry for that run-on sentence, but its the best way I am able to describe the genre of lounge music. Esquivel's work is, along with Raymond Scott, space-age pop's true artistic statement. He had a sense of humor, which is apparent in his compositions. His music is truly out of this world - it sounds like nothing else in the lounge genre, or in any other genre all together. Most of all, despite the surrealism, this is probably the most accessible music in the space-age pop genre. Its great dancing music, and the only flaw is that it doesn't hold up as well on repeated listens. It certainly swings, and this is a must-have for any interested in the lounge genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whatchamacallit, Esquivel?
After years of obscurity, Juan Garcia Esquivel finally received some recognition in the 1990s.Esquivel was a bandleader who played adult instrumental pop in the '50s and '60s.His music is more interesting than most other instrumental pop, because he used unusual instruments and had wild arrangements, many of which took full advantage of stereo seperation. This is the first CD of his music that was ever released. It is a great sampler of some of his best recordings.Give it a listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classical Kid Reviews Esquivel
I have always been a fan of the off-beat, the unusual, from unknown classical composers to "bad" music (which is in the eyes of the beholder), which also extends to popular music. I was delighted when the retro-swing movement came about, and that meant that many old recordings were going to be resurrected on CD and I said, "I better get these while they are still out there"! Well, I bought many of those CD's, and I do not regret it! From a classical standpoint, Esqivel really reminds me of composers like Stockhausen and Ligeti! He really distorts pop music, slowing down tempos, using instruments that are unusual (such as the Jaw Harp and many others that he invented himself). His most famous trademark is his back-up singers, who say "Zu-Zu-Zu-Zu" or only say one or two words of a lyric while the instrumentalists take over the others while you imagine them being sung. Esquivel also wrote many pieces by himself, of which "Latin-Esque" is one. The sound quality is extraordinary. This is a big factor: if you listen with headphones, you can hear more of the stereo "spread"-xylophone glissandos surround you instead of just coming out of the speakers. CD technology has a way of making the old sound even better, and you can tell these recordings were made with love. My only criticism of these compilation CDs is the fact that there is duplication of certain numbers which of course overlap between CD's. Great notes by the amazing Irwin Chusid, who should put out a book of all his program notes from his CD's. A winner all around! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This album is probably Mana's finest work. This is basically the last album they did before they went overly pop-oriented. The album art is simple, just the band with their instruments. While other albums try to catch your eye with flashy cover art, this album may go unnoticed. However, there isn't a bad song on this disc, and it is worth every penny. The songs range from love songs, to songs about difficult life circumstances, and all the songs are sung with incredible raw emotion. The music is great, and it goes with the lyrics and voice perfectly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Some good listening
I started listening to Mana about 4 years ago.The first song that I heard from them was "como dueles en los labios".After findnig out who the band was, I searched for that song and ran into "Donde Jugaran Los Ninos."The album was excellent and I have bought every album since.I have not tired of any of their songs.I highly recommend this and any of their albums. As for the person who posted from Peru, I think it's a little unfair to call their music garbage(basura). If you know about Mana, then you know Peru was big in Mana's rise. Thanks for that.Aside from that, what band has come out of Peru that has been a hit in the U.S.?As for the music being just for (gringos), I'm a chicano and most of the people I know that listen to them are Mexican, or chicano. It's nice to know there are American's that do listen to it.Good for our white friends for expanding their taste in music.Unfortunately our friend from Peru is shallow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everlasting
Jobim's music is very elegant and classy. It can be also a background on any activities - you will feel comfortable and relaxed. "Tide" is my favourite instrumental album.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best and it will be one of your favorites, too.
I first bought TIDE on vinyl, shortly after it was released, already being a fan of Jobim. I played the grooves off of it. Now, I have it in CD. It's doubtful anyone in the world has played and listened to this album more than I have over the years. The appeal is threefold: First, Jobim's music is relentlessly upbeat and mood elevating. There is a happiness and joy which never fails to make your outlook on life better. Second, the music is relaxing. It cuts through tension and removes the stress and aggravation of everyday living. Third, it's rhythmic. Brazilian beats are recognized as the most expressive and soul-moving in the world. If these rhythms don't get your body subtly moving, you'll need life supports! If you don't know Jobim or haven't listened to Brazilian Bossa Nova, start here! Jobim is the undisputed, heavyweight champion of the genre and THIS album is at the absolute top of his work. Do NOT miss it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Boy From Ipanema Strikes Again
Although the "Wave" album may be a tad superior to this effort, this is extremely enjoyable nonetheless. The variations of "Girl From Ipanema" are very unusual. The beginning and ending piano chord progressions herald that this is not the dreamy version of old but a new exciting journey to that famed beach. The other tracks, especially the different versions of "Tema Jazz", are the icing on the cake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD
I picked this CD up while stationed in Panama City, Panama in 1996.I've been listening to this band for 10 years and I still love them. This CD is like their "SGT Pepper's", when the Beatles went through their metamorphosis from a pop type band to a serious rock and roll band.Just like with the Beatles, their older stuff and newer stuff are great.I'm not comparing them to the Beatles, but this shows that the band wasn't afraid to deviate from what made them popular. There are some really amazing tracks on here like "No ha parado de llover" and "siempre el amor"I've seen this band live in Bogota, Colombia and Hato Rey, Puerto Rico.Superb live band, and I cannot believe that with the huge influx of latin music over the last 6-8 years like Shakira, Ricky Martin and Paulina Rubio, that these guys haven't taken off in the States. They even did a cover of Led Zeppelin's Fool in the Rain that is awesome, and is on the International version of "Encomium: a tribute to Led Zeppelin"Definately give this band a try, and don't let the language Barrier get in the way. Also, pick up Mana en vivo, great live concert and superb sound, although this was recorded before "Cuando los angeles lloran"

Lila Downs's sophomore U.S. release sees her take a much more folkloric tack than her debut, delving into the mystical codices of the Mexican Mixtec natives (her ancestry on her mother's side)--not that the entire album is made up of ancestral songs. There's also "Nueve Viento," a bolero Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The folksy folks
This is Lila's most folksy album ever. And also one of her most beautiful, intense and probably long lasting ones. This music will be still as great as it is today, in, say, twenty years from now.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Jazzier side of Lila
TREE OF LIFE is quieter all around: Downs' songs present more of her jazzy side, tend towards less passionate riffs and displays, yet are smoothly evocative of her Mexican roots and heritage.

To the anonymous music fan from Seattle....shame on you.You have no idea what traditional Mexican music is...you must be one of those people that think burritos & "combinations" are traditional Mexican cuisine and that waltzes performed by misguided sell out mariachi bands are traditional Mexican music.Just as there is infinitely more to Mexican cuisine than is available in the U.S., consciousness about Mexican music is very superficial. Are southern gospel tunes or appalachian jigs any less American than Glenn Miller or Elvis Presley just because they were never discovered by mainstream audiences? While it is true that Lila fuses foreign influences with indigenous doesn't invalidate it...because Mexico's essence is one of mestizaje (fusion...racial, idiomatic, visual, and musical). ... With this, his major-label debut, Bob Marley not only became an international superstar, so did reggae itself. The world of music would never be the same after the burning, classic tracks of "Stir It Up," "Slave Driver," and "Concrete Jungle." Everything about this 1973 platter is seminal--Marley's lyrics are political, but never preaching; there's not a dud track on the entire disc; the accompaniment of Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston is unbeatable; and while this is classic reggae, it never sounds clichéd. This is, quite simply, as timeless as music gets. With great packaging, this deluxe edition gathers the original album and the unreleased Jamaican version. The Jamaican disc features a different mastering and sequence, and two additional tracks that show Marley's softer side--"Hide Tide or Low Tide" and "All Day All Night." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Idiots messed with the original version of this album. Unbelievable
I got this a couple years ago when it was released and it's not even close, the overdubs and such crap covered up a gem of an album.Buy this double cd (hopefully on sale like me) or simply buy only the eleven jamaican tracks (cd 1) from itunes. It will be worth it, every song except for 'midnight ravers' (the only song Chris Blackwell had sense enough to leave alone) is extremely different from the "original"... and oh so much better.Fire this one up and you might never come down. Church!

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Of The Same But Not The Same
Having the Tuff Gong release remastered from the original master tapes and now this, I can say that the remixing adds clarity and lowers the bass boom somewhat...The wonderful Jamaican release is the key to getting this CD for lovers of Marley..the music is roots, simpler, harmonies somewhat more prominent in places, less rock effects than the the second CD with 2 tracks not released on original "western" release...no filler here...truly a totally different album in sound and atmosphere..indeed the length of both cd's is a real issue, way too short, the artwork and lyrics are nicebut again it is a historical document from an amazing star for dedicated lovers only. ... Editorial Review

Marisa Monte is one of the great female vocalists to emerge from MPB (Brazilian popular music), and this part-studio, part-live offering goes a long way in capturing all of the facets of her style, from the softer tones of "Blanco" to a rhythmic, energetic cover of George Harrison's "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)." Monte is nothing if not eclectic, leaping from Caetano Veloso's wonderful "De Noite Na Cama" to the '50s Brazilian standard "O Xote das Meninas." Sympathetic production from longtime collaborator Arto Lindsay adds a great deal, but at the end of the day it's Monte's voice and powerful personality that are stamped all over this disc. The 11 live tracks are particular standouts because of the relentless drive behind them. Both sexy and sensual, Monte never needs to belt it out; her slinkiness is all that's needed to keep things purring along. A true star. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb beyond belief
I will never forget the night I introduced my brother to Marisa's music.I left him babysitting my children and gave him "Rose and Charcoal" to keep him occupied ... came home several hours later to find him weeping tears of ecstasy (I am not kidding) and a total Marisa convert. That was years ago and he and I are still die-hard Marisa fans. This album here is one of my favourite all time albums, along with Rose and Charcoal.Marisa is even more stunning live than studio, believe it or not.The variety of music on this album is amazing, and every track delights and intrigues. All are absolute works of art, but some just blow your mind, they are so beautiful, and reach somewhere deep into your soul.Always read the translations of her lyrics because they are delightful.Well ... sometimes a bit morbid, like "Bem Leve" which is about coffins, if I remember correctly, but er, delightfully morbid!Read them and you will see!To anyone who samples Marisa and loves what they hear, just buy all her albums and be done with it ... you will never regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Live Tracks
This is a cd that has recordings from Marisa Monte's shows, and before the live performance, has some "original" cuts.I remember when this came out, some people were disappointed because it wasn't an entirely new album (this one came after Rose & Charcoal). But in 2000 Monte released I "Memories Chronicles and Declarations of Love" which had mixed reviews.5-0 out of 5 stars the best of the best
As anyone will quickly see from scanning the amazon reviews of her albums, Marisa has a fanatical following, and deservedly so.She is one of the all-time great Brazilian artists, in the pantheon with Jobim and Gal Costa. This album is important for a couple of reasons. The live songs are distinct from their studio versions and in some cases better."Xote das Meninas" is the best case in point. On her debut album, still unsure of her artistic identity, Marisa gave this song an odd, jazz-inflected treatment that simply doesn't work. Here, it gets a straight ahead "roots" treatment and the result is fantastic.Indeed, what this record does is illustrate Marisa's singular contribution to Brazian populair music (MPB); the sublime marriage of traditional north-eastern folk music to a pop sensibility.Danca da solidao is another example , a beautiful, modern rendition of a Paulinho de Viola standard. This album also benefits from a high end stereo system -- the production on both the studio and live discs is impecable. The concert recording is the best live production I have ever heard. For those wanting an introduction to Marisa, start here, though you'll buy all the other albums in the end. ... My wife is a fan of Luis Miguel. When I saw this 2 CD set I had to get it for her as a surprise. The one surprised was me.I think Luis Miguel is one of the very best male vocalists alive today. His sheer power and mastery of music is outstanding. His CDs sound like his concerts. He belts it out with all he has when he sings live.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!
Now this is a real disappointment, and I even bought it a full price. I saw it on the list of Down Beat's Album of the Year and bought it without thinking twice about it. A far cry from "Always Say Goodbye", which is in a similar laid-back style. And an even farer cry from his duo record with Kenny Barron, "Night and the City".

5-0 out of 5 stars Only a few words to explain.
Imagine: you're driving on the highway late at night. There is no traffic and nobody is waiting for you at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT OVERLOOKEDMUSIC
This is just great music. The producer has made a tastefully selection in each track of the compilation. The result, is nothing less than a magnificent overview of the diversity of Panamanian music. A diversity that can only be trace to the multiethnic background of the people of the isthmus. You can enjoy pure originalsoul music (tracks 12, 9, 2 ) with such a good quality that can easily be compare with that produced by Afro-American legends...Panamanian Calypso is gratefullyvindicated by Lord Cobra, probably the most importantcalypsonian of the Caribbean during the sixties and seventies. His version of "Rocombey" is just amazing. In the other hand, you can find original and exclusive Salsa Music.... In my opinion this is the Panamanian version of Buena Vista Social Club..... Don't miss it....
5-0 out of 5 stars This is an incredible album
I was born in 1976, so i guess i missed all of this, i am from Panama and i can honestly say that this album blew my mind, being a music enthusiast i am always searching for seventies combos nacionales music and had heard some funk and calypsos from the country, but this pieces i didn't know existed until i bought this cd.
