It's okay! There's NO Barry Manilow on this album--trust me.This is an EXCELLENT compilation of new Brazilian sounds. This is also one of Putumayo's better Groove albums.

I love this CD!It is so smooth and so cool.It is absolutely great music and if you're like me, you won't be able to help yourself from cranking it loudly in the car.Hey, who knows, it might even make you look cooler while you're cruising down the street (it could happen!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Bien hecho
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow excellent
I loved the album.
5-0 out of 5 stars Salsa is back on this CD !
Being a salsero from "back in the days" - 60's, 70's, ... It is very refreshing to see the "pendulum swing" back to those days. The rhythm, arrangements and instrumentation on this CD are that of pure SALSA with reggaeton artists riffing within the music. Not, the other way around. The reggaeton artists blend in with the Salsa music. Andy Montanez is a legend in music who is an original member of El Gran Combo. Daddy Yankee, Julio Voltio and other reggaeton artists performed their singing (rapping) style within the framework of Montanez's music. A great CD for Salseros and lovers of reggaeton. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest musical groups ever!
I just recently discovered Brasil '66 when I heard "Pretty World" on a jazzy oldies type station. I knew instantly that the singer was someone special & a master singer. Now I'm listening to many of their songs and I never get tired of them. Their music is just pure, clean, good, real music! It is free from technical gimmicks or anything heavy or unnecessary. Their music is so happy, innocent, and fun. I LOVE IT. I can't get enough of it! They're definitely my favorite right now. The best thing about Brasil '66 is Lani Hall. What a great singer she is. Also the jazzy bossanova instrumentals are refreshingly different from anything I've listened to before. I'm looking forward to getting better hi-fi equipment so I can hear them in all their glory. I bet they sound really great on a tube stereo system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this CD!
I listen to this CD when I go for my evening walks. It's wonderful music to walk to (and dance to!). I am absolutely crazy about Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66!. My favorite song on this CD is "Sometimes In Winter." It's a beautiful, haunting song. All the songs are great, but that is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars The K-Man was right.
This CD is a timeless, time-capsule treasure trove of pure pop pleasure.Sergio Mendes is a bossa nova Bacharach - not just because he covered both types of music, but because he shares whith the American an interest in revivifying the aesthetic of Tin Pan Alley, tempering it with a 60s pop melancholy (both especially cherish the inherent sadness of brass), and, in Mendes' case, cooling it with jazz discipline gleaned from his association with Jobim. The half century of melodic miracles on this CD may be divided into three types:Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent music to make love by...
This is a romantic album!Elias' vocals are smooth, and her piano playign skills are second to none on a jazz level. These are fine verisons of bossa novas classics. Her piano and vocals both swing, yet so gently.Great music!

Eliane Elias put together a terrific band, including Michael Brecker, Oscar Castro-Neves (producer as well) and Marc Johnson to make this outstanding recording.4-0 out of 5 stars Really Great CD!!!!!!!!
First off I wanna say that I love Eliane Elias for her singing, her LOOKS, her voice, and her piano playing. She is a great talent and this Cd really shows it off. When I First saw this cd i was in a mall and i was looking for the great jobim song "LOOKS LIKE DECEMBER" and this and another disc by Jobim came up so it showed you could hear some samples so I clicked the track and i said i have to have this CD cause this chick is great! when I orderd the CD it came to pretty quickly and when i opend the box and listen to hole CD I was in love with every thing about her... ... This impressionistic score from Marcel Camus's 1958 cinematic retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus was most Americans' introduction to the Brazilian musical style called bossa nova. 5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
It's wonderful to have a new recording of the sound track from the movie Black Orpheus. The movie was one of my favorites but I played my old record of the sound track so many times (and put it through so many moves) it was scratched and no longer enjoyable to listen to.Now everytime I listen to my CD version I am transported to the time and space of the movie and the time and space of the early sixties when I first heard it.The little bonus addition at the end of the CD is fun too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy the movie, not this soundtrack
Save your money. I love the movie very much, and to watch it and to listen it is an experience like none other. However, if you look for the music from this movie, do not look here. This is just the movie, except without video. I have great respect for Bonfa and Jobim's work on this music, but they do not get glorified truly since the tracks change so quickly and the movie sounds play such a large role in the soundtrack cd. Listen to Trio da Paz and their Black Orpheus album and see how it compares, and even though it is not the original Jobim or Bonfa, it pays more homage to them than this original soundtrack. Verve took the wrong route with this one. Yes the music is landmark in evolving Samba/Bossa Nova, but this cd does not depict truly how wonderful the music is.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nace el bosanova
Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sergio Mendes is a genius
It's nice for Sergio Mendes to have all this attention again because of the revamped Mas Que Nada, but I think there will be little room for discussion when you compare it to the brilliant original, which isn't polluted by obnoxious rapping. His whole Brazil '66-discography is amazing: this is timeless, sweet, slightly exotic music that's upbeat with a hint of melancholy. So the same goes for this great record, which leans on two very good covers, but the originals are what's special here. The perfect blend between 60's pop and bossanova, sweet but not sappy, cheerful but not annoying, and always this sweet, glowing, after-summer vibe. He's the man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smooth as Silk
I recently decided I have been buying too much new music on CDs, and not listening to my large collection of great music on LPs.One of the first LPs on my platter (for the first time in years) was this great outting by Brazil 66.I couldn't believe how exciting, timeless, and classy (and even sexy) this music is.The singing and the instrumentation blend perfectly. Some of the rhythms get complex, yet they come off as smooth as silk in the hands of these great musicians. If you still don't know this music, this would be a great starting place. It is definitely one of their best. Also, though tame by today's standards, the cover of the LP once unfolded (and I presume the CD) is interesting--to say the least.I might also add that the range of sound in the music of Brazil 66 really shows off a good stereo system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this album
I am from Denmark (aged 40). This was my mother's favourite record album. I must have heard it a 1000 times when I was very young. It was not until I reached my teens that I learned to appreciate the catching songs. I have now got it on CD. However, I would like you to help me. 5-0 out of 5 stars Las Rubias Panamericana!Fabulous!
The clear sound of their beautiful voices fills my home morning and night!I adore this album! You will love it too!S

4-0 out of 5 stars The singing of angels
Las Rubias del Norte of Brooklyn make wonderful music that takes the listener on a pleasant journey through past popular styles that our grandparents would surely recognize, all the while making it new through the unforced, unfiltered purity of the delivery of lead vocalists Allysa Lamb and Emily Hurst. These two weave pure magic from their hoary catalogue of ancient rumbas, Cuban pop hits, and dusty old cowboy tunes. Against lithe arrangements from the band their light pure sopranos twine and trill like spilled silver. This is their first record, self produced, but it doesn't sound like it. They've obviously been paying their dues and honing their very special sound and songbook. The only reason for the lack of a fifth star is the relative brevity of this recording clocking in at around 30 or so minutes, that and that one of the tracks unwisely turns the vocal over to one of the guys in the band. An upcoming release is soon to follow as they show signs of outgrowing the tiny Brooklyn bar where they have been a fixture. They've got a lot of great old songs up their sleeves and the band supports our two angels superbly. Watch 'em. They're gonna make it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great cd to listen to while puffin' a sweet cigar...
This cd with the acception of With a Little Help From My Friends and the even more watered down Like A Lover, is a classic. The Frog is by far the album's highlight and is sophistocated bossa nove(Brazilian jazz), tje rest of the album is more or less superior bossa nova, some more on the jazz side, some on the pop(Friends and Lover) side. The album has a nice flow and the songs sung in Portuguese are usually the highlights, however The Look of Love is a lounge classic. This is a great cd for smokin' big ole' cigars to.I recently enjoyed a Phillies Blunt Banana flavored cigar to this, it went perfectly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautful music
I first heard this music in the '60's when it came out. I loved it then, and I love it now. I am so happy to have this music back in my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Look Around Is Great!!
Wow...this CD is great! What a treat to listen again to tunes that I heard as a kid in the late '60's and into the 70's. I can remember older siblings playing the original vinyl Lp of this album. And Lani Hall...one of the best-quality(and sexiest) female voices I've ever heard! Her rendition of So Many Stars on this CD is without equal. They don't make albums like this one anymore...what a shame. I would recommend this CD to anybody that enjoys brasilian-flavored music with just a touch of jazz/pop thrown in for good measure. You wouldn't regret the purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE LIST TOP 10
I got this today and I disagree with the other reviewers this right here is a good compilation it consists of 11 songs written and sung by Steve Winwood from the '60s to the early '70syou must have this there is not a bad song on here . Steve Winwood performed each song at least once during his tours from 2003-2006

4-0 out of 5 stars Good selection, title misleading
When you first see this cover in the record shop bins, you are fully expecting a collection of Winwood's solo work from 1977-87, prior to being wooed away to Virgin. You turn it over and discover the tracks are his best-known works with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith, and limited to the period 1966-72.It's not really surprising that Universal would do this; the compilers at Universal are not the music lovers who used to run the labels over which the company now has jurisdiction, and so I dock this collection a star for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revisiting Bebel Gilberto
This album has a softer feel than the "Tanto Tempo Remixes" that were obviously for the dancefloor."Bebel Gilberto Remixed" is a perfect chill-out CD,perfect for relaxing&drinking mojitos.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Listening, Even After Repeated Listens
I've heard alot of remixes in my life time. They're usually exciting the first couple of times you listen and then they get boring after that. In a nut shell; they're usually pretty obsoletist.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Improvement
Won't get into the history of Bebel - I think that's known. This is her remix project, released late last spring/summer, of her self-titled album from 2004.It's strange but I really enjoyed her first album, "Tanto Tempo" but felt that her remix album from that was a bit off.Meanwhile, it's just the opposite with "Bebel Gilberto" and it's remix album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sublime Hispanic Experience
If you haven't heard Mercedes Sosa's song, there are some tracks on this compile that will convert you to fandom. This Argentinian woman, whose mixed descenet seems to have supplied her with all the good singing genes, was born in 1935.She has the most marvellous voice, fresh as the dawn and as crystal clear.Particularly moving is 'Gracias a la Vida' (more famously sung by Joan Baez, but Sosa's version is divine).I love this CD and it can lift me out of the doldrums in a wink.If you buy this, maybe also get the 2001 CD of 'Missa Criolla' as the Sosa version is fabulous. Her voice is mellow, but timeless, young-sounding and pure without affectation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking folklore
I bought this CD for a single track. A track I remember my late father playing when I was kid. I was extremely pleased to find the entire album a worthwhile listening experience. It's folklore with a message at it's best. It's thought provoking, yet also soothing and relaxing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chill out with a cup of coffee ora Mojito......
Good Putumayo CD.Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!

Editorial Review

Luiz Bonfá, along with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell and Joao Gilberto, helped invent Brazilian Bossa Nova. "The whisper heard around the world" was budding during the 1950s but achieved full flower a decade later. It was a coolly intellectual yet irresistibly melodic marriage of African-derived samba rhythms with American jazz and French Existentialism. Bonfá eventually became world-famous due to his contributions to the score of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bonfa, Brazilian Master
This has been an extremelyhard to find audio recording from the legendary Brazilian guitarist/composer Luiz Bonfa. Amazingly, the producers included other takes of some of Bonfa's classics which I have never before heard.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, hot, n spicy!
I do not know much about Latin Music in general or Bossa Nova in particular but I do know quality!Solo in Rio 1959 by Luiz Bonfa has incandescent, melodious-genial, tranquillity!Of course paltry words can not express the beauty of Bonfa's music you must experience it...do it... now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Bossa Nova, Virtuoso Guitar
I never heard of Luis Bonfa before I listened to an NPR segment about great musical CDs.They played a short clip of Sambolero; I was mesmerized.Considering that this was recorded on what amountsto a simple tape recorder back in 1959, the sound is amazing.Just the guitar and occasionally Bonfa's voice.A Brazilian in New York is humorous and quite eccentric.Manha de Carnaval is at the heart of the bossa nova sound, which, by the way, is just as subtle and moving as it was when it was "popular".This is a great CD for anyone who loves good music. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Narcotango
Narcotango es tal vez el mejor trabajo de la explosin que conjunt tango y electrnica y que tuvo en Gotan Project uno de sus ms claros exponentes.

4-0 out of 5 stars for lovers of liquid tango
This is great modern tango for lovers of liquid tango - new tango with an eclectic edge. I love dancing to almost every track and if only I could find enough great partners out there I'd be dancing non-stop as there's so much potential to create fantastic dances in response to it. However, if you're a non-dancer this is still a great CD with wonderful tracks that will be great backdrops for any laid-back social gathering or to chill out with a coffee on a lazy Sunday morning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Newest Wave in Tango
Once thought by many to be a dying art form, tango shows remarkable resilience as its newest banner is being unfurled by young Argentines who have discovered and embraced the music as their own. Some diehards may find it hard to accept, but the only way that tango can survive as a focal point of Argentine culture is through continuous evolution. If one accepts tango only as it used to be, then it becomes reduced to a mere curiosity and tourist attraction. Innovative, once controversial but now beloved artists like Astor Piazzolla, Osvaldo Berlingieri, and Roberto Goyeneche led the vanguard of a new way of tango expression in the decades following the Golden Era; today artists like Carlos Libedinsky and American Glover Gill take up where they left off.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one
This is the one Chente Cd you would want to have left in your car if your house burned down. This is the one you'll always come back to after staying out all night with those other 'viejas'.By the way I really wish they would put more info in the sleeves like lyrics or some nice sombrero poses. Please Don Chente, have someone 'fix' your website too, please?

5-0 out of 5 stars Incomparable !
A wonderful compilation of the most popular songs sung by the the legendary Vicente Fernandez. This album and Historia de un Idolo 2 is a must have for anyone that loves Vicente, musica ranchera or love Mexican music. His voice is incredibly beautiful, and powerful. I went to see him live in Madison Sq. Garden and he sounds exactly the same. His voice as beautiful as ever. He sang for 2 and a haft hours without intermission. Chente is in a class by himself. Incomparable ! ... Read more
