5-0 out of 5 stars The Best music of It's Kind
My wife introduced me to the bolero music of the early years and then introduced me to Luis Miguels Romances cd a few years ago. This CD, his complete collection of his Romances is an unbelievable find.To think, the once child singer at the age of 20 could belt out music like this.He did this recording between the age of 20-25 and the music sounds soulfully mature and rich.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation
Luis Miguel is one of the greatest Latin American singers of all time. His smooth boleros are so masterfully done that even if you don't understand the language you will definitely understand his talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible music, but packaging and timing isn't
When listening to this CD, I thought of the Irving Berlin quote that great music should be 1/3 melody, 1/3 harmony, 1/3 rhythm. This CD meets that rigorous standard.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Cold, No I Won't Believe Your Heart Is Cold. . . Maybe Just Afraid To Be Broken Again. . ."
After watching Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 40th Anniversary concert last Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl, I'm still in the mood for more Sergio Mendes music. I've been listening to all of his remarkable and my all-time favorite CDs and I'm enjoying every minute of it. I could listen to his music for hours and hours without tiring!
5-0 out of 5 stars Very brief , but high quality music and smooth singing
The grooves on this album are very cool and the harmony singing is impressive . I think the album is around 30 minutes long , so you are not getting much for your money , however it is very enjoyable .

5-0 out of 5 stars Mexican Diva at her Best
I just got this from Amazon & the first thing that captured me was the sound of the sumptious guitar by Marcela Rodriguez followed by a trembling, hoarse, fully throated voice of Chavela Vargas Oh! boy is it an experience oh! what? she has the best haunting voice I have ever heard in a tradition music.I dont understand Spanish but the music transcends all language barriers. At times you could feel that she is almost crying and sadness is all over the vocals with the guitar mimicking her trembling voice it's unbelievable.especially on "sombras", "Cruz de Olvido","Rogaciano", "La Llorona" infact ALL SONGS are the best. The version of "Llorona" is a complete version at 8:29 minutes. Lucky for me I got an import from Madrid, Spain withPedro Almodovar's(movie producer of Talk to her,All about my mother,Live Flesh, Tie me up, Tie me down etc) stamp of approval as he likens Chavela Vargas to Billie Holiday, Edith Piaff, etc and he says that his experience with Vargas was the most important thing in his life. Now you tell me how can anyone beat that. Thanks to her smoking cigars (sorry I'm not condoning smoking)her voice hoarseness is what makes me love her music even more. The music is laid back here & very melodius, no electric snyths just voice & acoustic Spanish guitar. This CD will appeal to people who love Latin guitar, jazz/fussion,jazz vocal, & those who love to immense themselves with other people's cultures. You dont have to speak Spanish to listen to any kind of music. So go on buy this as gift for someone special. ... Read more

He sido fiel seguidora del trabajo de Orishas.Este es definitivamente mi album favorito ... distinto!
5-0 out of 5 stars Sensacional!!!!
This album makes my heart shake!!! I can feel it in my blood! I have always been a fan of Orishas (since A lo Cubano), and so far I consider this album a huge growth of the trio, The combination of Hip-Hop and Cuban, old time Cuban, latin flavor and modern sounds is sensational. There is nothing better that music that can be felt in the stomach, in the soul... The kind of music you can turn on as loud as you can and still sounds perfect! Love the voice colors, and the lyrics, that are indeed very sentimental when it comes to understanding just a tiny bit of the Cuban situation, their lifestyle, their swing and the Cuban Groove. This is a wonderful tribute to their culture because it has added on to it in a very positive modern way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Knock-out effort
These guys defy easy categorization.Yeah, they're hip-hop, but they're also fluid and the harmonies and instrumentation are gorgeous. And their political chops are definitely on target. They remind me of a more sophisticated Ozomatli, which aint a bad thing!Just goes to show...the French can gripe all they want about immigrants, but if musicians like Orishas weren't residing in Paris, the French would still be stuck with the worst music on the planet!I love every song on this CD, and I don't say that very often.Give it a try! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Magano...need I say more?
This release from start to finish simply blows my mind.I love the funky rhythm of "Magano."I've been listening to this tune over and over again in my iPod for two days now.I can't get enough of it. If someone comes across the lyrics to "Magano", PLEASE let me know.

3-0 out of 5 stars Half and Half
The first half is incredible, powerful brazillian drums and singing make this an energized and original and fun beginning. But somewhere around the middle, the sound gets very produced with organs and electronic sounds. It goes from raw to overproduced. still a great cd but not as great as the first 5 tracks.

5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!

There’s no doubt that singer Lila Downs' profile is on the rise after her appearance in the film Read more

Reviews (22)

5-0 out of 5 stars Endless talent, humor(!), peerless voice
It does not happen very often that one can hear a forty year old classic in a new cover version, and it is as if you hear that song all new and all over again. Especially, I had always thought that Chavela Vargas' version of Paloma Negra would remain the "gold standard", but when I listened to Lila Down's version here, ohh boy was I wrong, and ohh boy was I blown away! She plays with her talent, she jiggles with her incredible musical possibilities. Where other artists put a lot of effort into a single interpretation, where you see they work hard, Lila Downs seems just like a child that opens a big box of candies and asks: "What type of magic do I feel like doing next?"
5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Sound, Filled With Passion And Soul!
I first heard Lila Downs' sultry, smokey voice in the film "Frida." The movie's entire soundtrack is extraordinary, and I still listen to the CD frequently. Fortunately Ms. Downs has come out with four albums since then, because I love the passion and soul she puts into her music. "Una Sangre" is her latest offering. And it is an eclectic, outstanding mix, based on her multicultural artistic vision!
5-0 out of 5 stars Another great offering
On this Lila Downs fourth or fifth CD if you count the rerelease (with additional tracks)of "Sandunga" finds her even deeperand more comfortable in her binational soul. Revealing her bicultural identity by the light of the moon ,muchlike a leopard in a starless night jungle, her vocals pounce on your soul, invadingand capturing your innermost feelings. There isa certain maturity to her latest work that reveals an accomplished artist, one who has travelled the globe and still comes back to her roots. There are no less than five traditional songs that have been given the Lila Downs treatment to retain their folkloric roots but with an edge, the Lila Downs edge. Even the songs that are originals have that feeling of traditional folkloric music because offine productionand musicianship. Although Lila is the star, credit must be given to the tight band that hails from different lands and whose flags make themlike a U.N. delegation. Of course, it goes without mentioning that Lila's "amorcito" Paul Cohen does a wonderful job arranging and producing the various melodies for a tight cohesive sound. If you are new to Lila you may feel the disc lacks continuity but this is who Lila is. She is a multitalented artist whose voice is like a contortionist, bending ,dippingand weaving between genres in her unimitable style. To say she is unique is an understatement. Whether she sings in husky tones, soft whispers, lingering, escalating ,suddenly diving operatic high notes or any style Lila chooses , she is fantastic. Listening to her gives me chills today just like the first time I heard her back in 1999 . The haunting melodies stay with you long after the disc stops playing. I've been listening to this disc for about a year now and never seem to get tired of it. I only put it away , offmy multi-disc rotation to give others a chance but I always come back to her. She can sing avariety of styles, many are featured hereand they are allreally good. Obviously she could do just a jazz album, as is evidenton her English version of "One Blood" where she sounds like like a sultry, throaty , Latina, Sade. Her talent is boundless. She has been compared to Chavela Vargas but really there is no comparison, there is Lila and then there is Lila. It is her style, her persona, her music that creates the magic. Some of the more traditional songs that have received the Lila treatment are the mystical "Cielo Rojo,""La Cucaracha," La Bamba," and"Paloma Negra" come to new life like antiques recently brought out of the cabinet to be proudly displayed at the table. Although I like very much the traditonal songs featured on this disc I am also drawn to "Dignificada" which has a slight reggae back beat, "Malinche" which explores the Mexican godmother cursed by some but that belongs to all of us who have Mexican heritage, the bluesy , rootsysung in English "Mother Jones," the call tomusical arms Paul Cohen sax introduction onthe Arabic sounding "Brown Paper People" with it's hip-hop inflected vocals adding further worldly textures and both Spanish and English versions of "One Blood/ Una Sangre" solidify the bilingual/binational nature of this disc. Lila is like a fine glass of wine or aged anejo Tequila that resonates with the various nuances and influences of the earth and climate, creating an experience to be savored and to reflect upon. She is not a person who fits into the flavor of the day pop- variety-disposible-icons that flood the music market today. This is a true artist who reflects what many people only feel and cannot express. This is another ina succesive line of great Lila Downs albums to be experienced. As others have stated, check her out live too. I've seen her three times and her shows are incredible. You need this CD in your collection, your soul will never be the same. ... Read more

Amongst all four Lila Downs releases so far, there is little doubt in my mind that this one remains an all time favorite.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sung poetry at its best....

5-0 out of 5 stars a glimpse into Lila Downs' rich, cultural heritage.......
I cannot emphasize enough how stunningly gorgeous and heartfelt this album is."La Sandunga" presents the duel cultural identity of Lila Downs to the masses.Following the release of the soundtrack from the movie, "Frida," Downs' talent was brought to the forefront, once people became aware of her featured musical contributions to the album."La Sandunga" is a prequel, if you will, to this surge in popularity. This album was originally released in 1997.We hear Lila Downs' rich cultural influences of her maternal Mixtec Indian lineage in "La Llorona" and "Sandunga" (more traditional flavored songs), and a more jazzy take on the classic "Besame Mucho" (deriving the more Americanized influences, channeling her father's side--he is of Scottish ancestry, but born in the United States).

Piazzola must be the devil.... cause he certainly captured the soul (of tango, that is!)5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST for the Piazzolla neophyte!
I have more than ten Piazzolla CDs and this is my favorite. It's actually the first one of his that I ever bought, and I think that this is probably the best CD that a beginner to Piazzolla and Modern Argentine Tango could buy.It has a generous sampling of the several hundred songs that Astor Piazzolla wrote in his life, and it consists mainly of live recordings, which adds to the intensity of each piece.Interestingly enough, there are nearly 200 CDs of Piazzolla music (if not more), and even the songs in the ones recorded by Piazzolla himself vary significantly from album to album. This one, however, is a real joy and will get anyone's toes tapping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo Maestro!!
Oh dear God, how to describe the music that came out of this album?Maybe we should make an exception and allow a six star rating in this case. Astor Piazzolla is for me the best composer of the 20th century and one of the best of all time. The way he can make music dance in you head and trigger emotions from deep within you is stunning. It is impossible to describe the way he puts music together into some of the most powerful music ever heard and at the same time doing it in a way tango had never been done before. Maestro Piazzolla completely changed tango into something new, something some people don't even consider tango anymore. He'll shred your soul and make you lose all hope in your life and suddenly fill you with hope and a sense of awe.Every person who take music seriously and can appreciate art must own something by Astor Piazzolla; and feel the blessing of immersing in its brilliance. ... I'm a true collector of orginal Cuban music from the 1930 to 1970's and this CD is probably one of the best I've heard from new age bands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot Latin Big Band
This album burns from start to finish. It is a straight up party album--- if you're looking for romantic make-out music, try another Buena Vista member. This record is loud and hot and made for dancing. Imagine a sweaty ballroom in a Havana casino in the 40's and this is the band that would be playing there. All of the musicians are excellent. The band has the traditional three trumpet, dual percussion, tres, bass and sonero line-up and there is not a weak member of the group. The vocalists are uniformly outstanding. Most of the album was recorded live in one take, and it definitely has the spontaneous, joyous feel of a live recording. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars "debut solo for Manuel Guajiro Mirabal"
Nonesuch Records and Warner Music present "Buena Vista Social Club Presents - Manuel Guaijro Mirabal", in his solo debut album featuring the music of Arsenia Rodgriguez performedby Manuel "Guaijro" Mirabal and a very selective group of Buena Vista Social Club musicians...recorded at Havana's Egrem Studios with that electricity of "Live Performances"...this is an album you would stay up late at night for, sipping a glass or two of your favorite...entire album is performed in a playful setting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Technically great; technologically weak.
Recently having taken up the piano, I thought I would start listening to some piano music I'm familiar with from my childhood. Although everyone my age knows the Charlie Brown theme, I didn't know a lot about Vince Guaraldi. I decided to take a chance on this CD, and I was very happy I decided to explore his music. There's a lot of depth in his apparently simple melodies, his accompanists are awesome, and I was humming the music all day long. I had no idea this guy was this good! If for nothing other than pure musical inspiration, I'm sure this will help my piano playing a lot. For a nice listen to while eating dinner or driving to work, I just love it. My only complaint is I'm a bit disappointed with the "remastering" (if you can call it that). There are a lot of hisses, buzzes and pops, and sometimes, it just sounds like Vince couldn't find a real piano and borrowed my nephew's Fisher-Price jobbie. But all in all, it's easy to overlook (overlisten?) these shortcomings and derive a lot of pleasure from this wonderful piece of jazz history.

So, yeah, I got into Vince Guaraldi as a little kid...of course, I didn't know much about the guy, hey, i was only seven whaddaya want? But I dug those Peanuts cartoons and I sure did dig that music and I never forgot it cuz when I got older I did some investigating and came across the man himself.

From "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" to "Linus and Lucy," Guaraldi had a marvelous sound all his own. A great talent. It's a shame he died so young. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Get ready for your jazz education. These virgin, unremixed tracks taken from the 1960s Verve vaults were a major influence on Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza and Eric Hilton years before they spun epic documents like Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great *JAZZ* album... TC only selected old tracks.
I find it funny that so many Thievery Corporation fans are reviewing this disc. This is pretty much a JAZZ disc of music from the 50's and 60s with tracks that just happen to be chosen by the Thievery Corporation. There was no sampling or editing, or anything.Just original music from 50 odd years ago. With all that said, I find this compilation to be excellent. If you like Bossa Nova, or some cool laid back jazz, then you'll probably like this disc. The music is lively but light.Give it a try, if you do, all your wildest dreams will come true.Ok, maybe not, but this is one fine CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is where they get their inspiration
I remember the first time I listened to a record by Thievery Corp. I became instantly aware of how different their sound is. I could not help wonder where this pair gets their inspiration, and what serves them so well in their constant stream of well engineered sounds.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not Your Classic Thievery
This CD by all means is not like Thievery's other stuff. When I first bought the album I was a little disappointed. I had boughten "The Richest Man in Babylon" and had fallen in love with these guys. So when I got this CD it just didnt do it for me at first. It was just all jazz tracks. But I took it with me one day to the library to study with and I have to admit it is really a great CD. I am glad I bought it. All the tracks are really amazing once you get into them. But hey if you're not into jazz dont buy this cd. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best 'Clean' Merengue Around
I'm also of Dominican descent and love love love Merengue. But, some of the music out there is really perverted and not to be heard by young ears.My daughters (ages 2 & 3) absolutely LOVE Juan Luis Guerra and I encourage them to listen to his music because I know that the songs he sings are sweet, romantic and respectful to women. This album has my vote!

5-0 out of 5 stars Music, Feelings & Rythm !
This was the first merengue album I bought, and since then I can't get enough of it! Juan Luis is definitely a GREAT artist. Just listen to it, and I am sure you will understand what I mean...! A Great album for people who want to know more about merengue and about the Dominican culture!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandes Exitos
This is by far one of my favorite CD's ever!! I had a copy of this CD already but my toddler son scratched it and I was heartbroken. It is a must for replacement. This CD has a great mix of slow and fast songs (bachata, merengue, salsa and dare I even say one particular song that's part samba). Juan Luis Guerra has such a haunting voice when it comes to the ballads and the fast-paced songs are so danceable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome CD
I am a native spanish speaker and this is an excellent CD.It puts my baby to sleep every time.A great mix of different Latin cultural songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this CD
After listening to electronic sounding classical music for my baby after so many months, this beautifuly sung/played CD does the trick to ease her to sleep. I play it just for me sometimes!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST LULLABY ALBUM en español!
As an educator planning to raise my children bilingually, I was very happy to discover this CD. My collection of materials would not be complete without it. It is absolutely beatiful and I can't wait to sing along to many of these songs to put my little one to sleep. I find listening to it now (baby is on the way) very soothing and would actually recommend it to anyone who wants to add traditional music in Spanish to their collection. This album is easy to listen to again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Top 5 Reggae albums of all time, easily
Of all the classic Lee "Scratch" Perry produced albums of the '70s (i.e., Junior Murvins' "Police and Thieves," Max Romeo's "War Inna Babylon"), this is hands down the best.Believe all the hype you're reading in all the reviews on this site.Cedric Myton's angelic falsetto, Roy Johnson's vibrant tenor, and Scratch's insane, towering production (is that the "Reggae Cow" I hear?) join together to produce an epic work. Are you skeptical when you hear me use the term "epic" when describing a reggae CD?Listen and you will understand. This CD is 100% essential. As an addendum, if this whets your appetite for more Scratch Perry, it would pay for you to track down a copy of Perry's close-second best title, the Upsetter's "Super Ape" which is, inexpicably, out of print at the time of this writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Much to Say!
Simply brilliant. Technically brilliant. Musically brilliant.
